Magician to perform in Highlands Ranch Scotty Wiese knew comedy and magic were his future early on

At the age of 9, Scotty Wiese performed some magic tricks for family members. He was good at it.

He liked it.

For several years, Wiese, who will be performing in Highlands Ranch on Jan. 21, said he continued to perform magic tricks, with an added dose of humor, as a hobby. In high school and college, Wiese said he could not ignore it anymore and knew he would make a full career out of it.

In 2017, Wiese said his high school basketball team was flying to Los Angeles to participate in a tournament when high winds forced the plane to divert and land in San Diego.

While the team sat on the runway, Wiese said, everyone was in a bad mood and not happy about the situation. It was at that point, SEE MAGICIAN, P22

After a decade of growth that far outstrips the Denver metro area as a whole, Douglas County shows few signs of slowing down, driven by high levels of demand and new development in expanding towns like Castle Rock, Lone Tree and Parker.

There’s no doubt the entire metro area has grown at an unprecedented rate in the last decade. But Douglas County, home to smaller towns, scattered development and plentiful open space for years, was especially ripe for growth in 2010.

From 2010 to 2020, Douglas County’s population grew by 25% to just over 360,000 people, according to the most recent data available from the Colorado State Demography Office, compared with just under 16% growth for the entire metro area. And while the COVID-19 outbreak in early 2020 slowed migration, and growth, across the board, Douglas County still grew more than twice as fast as metro Denver over the course of the year.

Douglas County’s population grew 2.5% from 2019 to 2020, while the metro area expanded by less than 1%, according to the demography office’s data.

Since Douglas County’s population was much smaller to begin with, it makes sense that its rate of growth would be higher. But there’s no doubt that the county has seen an outsized share of development in recent years,

Colo. children not yet impacted by omicron Local cases of more transmissible variant are starting to emerge

Doctors nationwide say that while children have been the least impacted in contracting COVID-19, it does not mean they are immune, and with a third variant hitting the streets of Colorado cases will continue to go up.

Samuel Dominguez, a pediatric disease specialist at Children’s Hospital Colorado, said statewide case numbers are holding steady with young patients. However, Dominguez said while national media outlets are reporting continued increases in young patients contracting the new omicron variant with hospital stays increasing, Colorado is still lagging behind.

Dominguez said CHC facilities along the Front Range had started seeing a decrease in young patients just before the Thanksgiving holiday. That decrease has continued as more cases of omicron are starting to be reported at all age levels.

Because Colorado cases are further behind the jump in COVID rates in states like Florida and New York, Dominguez said infectious disease doctors are relying on data from those states as they prepare to handle the anticipated increase.

“Really, in terms of what we are seeing here right now, it’s just not quite where the rest of the country is,” Dominguez said. “At the state level, we have no real good data for comparisons (between the delta and omicron variants) at this time.”

Even as Colorado is playing catchup with the rest of the country, Dominguez said the newest variant it is here, and the biggest concern is how transmissible it is.

Like Colorado doctors, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) continues to work on a world scale to get a grasp on what kind of impact the new variant will have on the U.S. As cases spread, the CDC reported that omicron spreads more easily than the original COVID strain and more studies are needed to see how it compares to the Delta variant.

According to the CDC timeline, Omicron was first reported by the World Health Organization (WHO) on Nov. 24. By Nov. 26, WHO classified Omicron as a “variant of concern.” The U.S. followed suit with the same labeling by Nov. 30. By Dec. 1, the U.S. had its first confirmed case of the new variant that is now competing with the Delta variant, which has been the dominant strain since summer.

On the website, the CDC stressed that “anyone with Omicron infection can spread the virus to others, even if they are vaccinated or don’t have symptoms.”

including breakthrough infections for vaccinated citizens, cause more sever illness or death than infection with other COVID variants.

According to the CDC, the current vaccines on the market, including Pizer and Moderna, are expected to protect people from “severe” illness, hospitalizations and deaths. However, the CDC warned that it expects an increase in breakthrough cases among people who are fully vaccinated.

U.S. health officials continue to encourage residents to not only get the first round of vaccinations, but also get the booster shot for added protection.

In children, Dominguez said, vaccinations are an important preventive step for ages 5 and older to be protected as much as possible.

As omicron becomes the most prevalent variant spreading COVID, Dominguez said winter break from schools is both good and bad to help prevent the spread among children and youths.

“The time off means decreases in spreading (COVID) in the schools,” he said. “But the bad side is there are a lot more holiday gatherings this time of year where it can also spread. Traveling also tends to increase this time of year.”

As families gathered and traveled throughout the holiday season, Johns Hopkins University reported the highest total cases of COVID since pandemic tracking officially began on Jan. 21, 2020. Breaking the record on Dec. 29, data showed the U.S. had 377,014 confirmed cases.

In Colorado, the state had just over 4,700 confirmed cases on Dec. 29, up about 67% from 2,824 confirmed cases the week before.

As cases increase, the need for testing centers has also increased.

According to the Douglas County website, testing at Sky Ridge Medial Center resumes this month. In Arapahoe County, testing sites can be seen with increasing lines at the UCHealth Campus along Arapahoe Road and the Arapahoe Crossing Shopping Center.

Still, Dominguez said, the “silver lining” for children and young adults is that it is the demographic least impacted in contracting COVID. “Overall, children have done a lot better handling this than adults,” he said. “But to say children are not impacted or cannot get this at all is just wrong.”

Dominguez stressed that children can still get COVID, spread COVID and some can get sick from it. Another area of concern for the younger population, Dominguez said, is that children can contract a condition known as MIS-C. MIS-C, or multisystem inflammatory syndrome, is a serious condition associated with COVID-19 where different body parts can become inflamed, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes, or gastrointestinal organs.

Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert courts suspend jury trials Chief judge takes precaution amid omicron variant surge

An order by the chief judge in Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties has suspended all jury trials through Jan. 28, citing data regarding the coronavirus surge driven by the omicron variant.

The suspension applies across the 18th Judicial District, which encompasses the four counties, and took effect Jan. 3.

Michelle Amico, the chief judge, was advised by the Tri-County Health Department that the one-week “cumulative incidence rate” — the rate of new COVID-19 cases — over the previous week had increased at the highest rate compared to any previous COVID-19 surges for both Arapahoe and Douglas counties, according to the order, which was dated Dec. 30.

“Arapahoe County experienced a 163% increase, and Douglas County experienced a 180% increase,” the order said. “In addition, on December 29, 2021, both Arapahoe and Douglas Counties broke their record for the highest one-day case count since the pandemic started.”

The order added: “Today, the hospitals in both Arapahoe and Douglas Counties are under strain, with 100% of ICU (intensive-care unit) beds full and approximately 99% of non-ICU beds full.”

Data from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment shows that the omicron variant has become the dominant variant in Colorado and now accounts for 91% of Colorado COVID-19 cases, with the delta variant accounting for the remainder, the order said.

“The CDC reports that anyone with Omicron infection can spread the virus to others, even if they are vaccinated or don’t have symptoms and that the surges in Omicron are likely to further aggravate the state’s healthcare system,” the order said.

The chief judge “has determined that public health and safety dictate avoiding the gathering of large groups of prospective jurors and that a temporary suspension of jury trials is necessary,” the order said.

The chief judge “will continue to closely monitor the COVID-19 data for all four counties and reserves the right to rescind, modify, or extend this (order) at any time based upon then-existing data, health related considerations, input from members of the bench and stakeholders, and all other relevant factors impacting jury trials,” the order continued.

The 18th Judicial District is the largest judicial district in Colorado, serving more than 1 million people, Amico noted in another order from 2021.

That order, dated Aug. 2, said “all persons must wear face coverings in the public and non-public areas of the courthouses and probation offices in the Eighteenth Judicial District until further notice.” That order cited CDC guidelines and recommendations from local public health officials.

Authorities seek victims of suspect in child sex assaults Following arrest, the sheriff’s office searching for anyone harmed

Arapahoe County sheriff’s investigators are asking for the public’s help in trying to find more alleged victims of suspect Allan Richard Long, 51, the sheriff’s office announced in December.

Long is suspected of 41 felony counts relating to sexual abuse of children, according to the news release. Investigators say there are at least seven victims ranging in age from 4 to 16, but there could be many more, the Dec. 16 news release said.

Long was arrested by sheriff’s deputies in September. He has ties in Colorado, Kansas, Wyoming and Montana, according to the release.

Investigators believe he may have committed multiple sex-assault crimes in those states and possibly

others, due to his access to families through his work, according to the release.

His occupations included volunteer firefighter, tow truck driver, truck dispatcher and over-the-road truck driver, according to the news release and Deputy John Bartmann, spokesperson for the sheriff’s office.

He allegedly committed some of the crimes within Arapahoe Long County, according to Bartmann.

Investigators say their child sex assault cases with Long date back to 2001, but they believe his alleged crimes may have started before that, the release said. Long was in the Arapahoe County jail being held in lieu of $1 million bond as of press time.

Tattered Cover opened its first pop-up site to be located at Lone Tree’s Park Meadows mall in October and will wind down the venture in the coming days.

The space, called “Tattered Cover + Kids,” boasted more than 1,200 children’s titles. The store had 1,800 total titles, stocking best-selling adult novels as well.

The seasonal store also gathered children’s gifts and special events.

The locally owned bookstore marked 50 years running in 2021 and has satellite locations in Denver International Airport, five Denver metro area stores, and will soon open a Westminster location in addition to its pop-ups.

Metro district manager talks about future Regional partnerships expected to remain strong

With the new year underway, Highlands Ranch Metro District General Manager Mike Renshaw took some time to answer Colorado Community Media’s questions on what to expect in 2022 and to reflect on the year 2021.

What was one of your major takeaways from 2021? What did you learn this year?

One of the major takeaways of 2021 is the fact that the pandemic continues to impact local government in a variety of ways, and that collaborative partnerships between agencies and sharing of information and best practices is more important than ever.

As a community, what do you hope to accomplish in 2022?

As the chairing agency of the Partnership of Douglas County Governments in 2022, the Highlands Ranch Metro District hopes to foster even stronger collaboration among the nine local government members. We also plan to continue to provide for the safety and welfare of our community through our continuing partnership with the Douglas County

Sheriff’s Office and the installation of Automatic License Plate Reader technology within the district.

What predictions do you have for the Highlands Ranch in 2022?

Continued fiscal strength as a result of paying off the district’s outstanding debt obligation in December, as well as a very successful May election as a result of a public-private partnership agreement with Community Resource Services of Colorado, LLC to assist the district with conducting its election.

In terms of growth, what should residents expect in 2022?

Although the Highlands Ranch Metro District is substantially built out and as a result will not see significant population growth, residents should expect the district leadership to continue to explore public-private partnerships and the use of innovative technologies as a means of enhancing the efficient and effective delivery of services.

What do you think the council/town accomplished in 2021 that can carry over into the New Year?

One of the major initiatives that the Board of Directors and staff accomplished in 2021 that will carry over into 2022 is the use of performance measurement dashboards that will enable the district to continue to ensure forward

Tree recycling through Jan. 16 Four locations throughout Highlands Ranch STAFF REPORT

The Highlands Ranch Metro District is offering free Christmas tree recycling once again this holiday season. Drop off any ornament and tinsel-free tree from Friday, Dec. 24 through Sunday, Jan. 16 at one of four sites: Redstone Park — 3280 Redstone Park Circle Toepfer Park — 9320 Venneford Ranch Road Dad Clark Park — 3385 Astorbrook Circle

Highland Heritage Regional Park - 9651 S Quebec St. (a Douglas County drop-off site, available Dec. 26 through Jan. 31) All Christmas trees will be chipped into mulch, which will be available for free on a self-serve basis to Highlands Ranch residents.

Mulch left over will be used on parkway and park landscape throughout the community.

The Metro District supports a thriving urban forest through a variety of practices including maintaining the health of existing trees, fighting tree-related insects and diseases, providing free community tree and limb recycling, leading a tree planting program and coordinating annual Arbor Day activities.

From Dec. 26 to Jan. 14, South Suburban Parks Parks and Recreation will be offering free Christmas tree recycling at two metroa area locations.

Littleton nonprofit gives grants to documented immigrants Money goes toward scholarships, low-income assistance

Immigrant Pathways Colorado, a nonprofit based in Littleton, said it has awarded more than $100,000 in grants to immigrants in the Denvermetro area, a milestone for the organization after it began offering grants in 2010.

“It feels pretty amazing,” said Susan Thornton, a former Littleton mayor who founded the organization in 2009. The nonprofit is completely community funded and receives no federal or state assistance, said Thornton.

“I was really amazed that a volunteer board of directors can do so much,” she said.

While the program focuses on immigrants living in the Denver area,

Immigrant Pathways has awarded money across Colorado to lowerincome, documented immigrants for a variety of initiatives such as English lessons, citizenship applications and driver’s licenses.

The nonprofit also awards scholarships to immigrants attending classes at Arapahoe Community College (ACC). As of 2021, the organization has awarded more than $20,000 in scholarships, according to Marie Perrin-McGraw, assistant director of operations and stewardship at ACC. About $1,000 goes to each student.

“Our partnerships with our community are crucial with our mission of removing barriers to education and creating those community partnerships,” Perrin-McGraw said.

Since Immigrant Pathways began working with ACC in 2017, McGraw said the program has been crucial for opening more doors to students.

funding and knowing that there’s external groups, like (Immigrant Pathways), actively wanting them to move forward,” she said.

The money given by Immigrant Pathways is doubled by a statewide program, the Colorado Opportunity Scholarship Initiative, that matches every $1 of the scholarship, providing students up to $2,000 from the money they secure from Immigrant Pathways.

Along with ACC students, Immigration Pathways works with several immigrant service organizations to identify applicants who may be eligible for a grant. This includes the Littleton Immigration Resources Center and the Spring Institute for Intercultural Learning in Denver.

While Immigration Pathways receives larger donations of around $1,000 every year from organizations like the American Immigration Lawyers Association’s Colorado chapter, it mainly relies on smaller

donations from individuals across the metro area.

“It’s a non-stop effort to educate the community about what we’re doing,” Thornton said. “Most of what we raise comes from people in the community who believe in our work.”

Thornton said she’s proud of the progress and growth the nonprofit has made. As it celebrates its $100,000 grant landmark, its members are preparing to bring help to incoming refugees from Afghanistan throughout Colorado, with around 2,000 anticipated for the Denver metro area.

Thornton said the organization is anticipating an influx of grant requests, but she remains hopeful that the community that has supported Immigrant Pathways will continue.

“America has always been a land of immigrants,” she said. “And people look to us for humanitarian leadership.”

VOICES We can’t stop until we start

Y

ou don’t have to be great to start, but you do have to start to be great.” — Joe Saba Here we go, the first week of the year begins and we are back at it, whatever “it” may be for each of us. Whether we claim 2021 as a huge success, a miserable failure, or anywhere in between, the good news is that we get to either build upon the successes, grow from the failures, or jump-start our way out of our comfort zone.

Heading into the new year, we get to choose what it is we want to start doing. For many of us, we thought about what it is that we want to stop doing instead of what we want to start doing. When we think of what we are trying to stop, it means we see that as something that is negative, maybe it’s a bad habit that we know we need to break. Having this awareness is so powerful when it comes to making positive changes in our life.

The best way to stop or break a bad habit is to start a new, good, healthy and productive habit.

What I have noticed in life is that

people who get stuck, knowing they want to stop doing something that could be destructive or disruptive to their life, but don’t stop, is because they didn’t come up with a better alternative.

Michael Norton We may argue that this should be common sense, but keep in mind that common sense is not always common practice. Many of us miss our own “aha” moments because we are so close to a problem or situation that we can’t visualize our way out of it. We need someone else to come alongside of us and point out what might be obvious.

As I thought about the column that I would write to begin the year, I knew that I wanted to begin the year with a one-word theme.

I outlined several drafts of what the column could be about and had plenty of positive, motivating and encouraging words to choose from. Before I knew it, I was stuck.

Then it hit me, “Start” would be the word and all I had to do was “Start” writing and the story would almost write itself.

- Zig Ziglar Why don’t we take the first step? It comes down to one of two things: Fear of failure and no time.

Fear of failure can be crippling if not paralyzing, but it is also the common language of negative or destructive self-talk. A kind of negative self-talk that when we eliminate it propels us forward toward the accomplishment of our goals and dreams. If we can start filling our head and heart with good, strong, and positive encouraging words, we will stop feeding our minds with negativity.

No time? What we are really telling ourselves is that everything and everyone else is more important than our own health and peace of mind. No time is the easiest cop-out of all. Sorry, but it’s true. What we need to do before we stop doing anything is start prioritizing what we are doing. What

School board switcheroo After campaigning to keep politics out of the district, and pledging fiscal prudence; these silly notions have already been cast aside. The newest Douglas County School Board directors slammed through hiring a new pre-selected lawyer “to diversify legal advice to the board.” Call me slow but what exactly is diverse legal advice? The district already has legal counsel. Sounds like it is a case of ensuring they get the advice they want, as opposed to the advice they need.

Perhaps it is not necessary to point out that the new lawyer has a history of political activity since he said his Republican partisan activities will not affect his legal advice. Perhaps it is also not necessary to point out the fiscal extravagance of spending taxpayer money to pay for redundant counsel while our teachers continue to be underpaid.

It is necessary, however, to point out it took less than a month for the board to perform its first politically motivated act.

Then, again maybe, since these directors campaigned on the “Kids First” platform, the new counsel is available for the children to call on, just as the directors made sure they can also get individual advice if they wish.

the upcoming Colorado Public Employee Collective Bargaining Bill are trying to do by expanding collective bargaining rights to public sector workers. This bill is an important step in making Colorado a better place to live and work.

I’m a proud member of United Campus Workers Colorado - CWA Local 7799 and I’ve seen some of the most important work at my job be done by our members.

We’re working to make sure people who are most impacted by COVID are taken care of. We’ve been funding Community Fridges so that people who are food insecure can eat. We’ve been pushing for racial justice, disability rights, and LGBTQ inclusion.

These are the kinds of things unions can create space for, and everyone deserves the right to ask for them.

As an employee, being in a union makes asking for what you deserve a little less scary.

As an employer, having a union can help make sure your employees have the support they need. When we have what we need to live with dignity, not just get by, everyone benefits. It’s better for people, for families, and even business.

and in 2021 it took significant steps toward continuing the trend heading into the new year.

In Lone Tree, for example, a long-anticipated expansion of RidgeGate Parkway paved the way — literally — to easier access and smoother traffic flows through the area, a crucial piece of the plan to implement phase two of the RidgeGate master-planned development.

Additionally in 2021, Shea Homes made its first of five land purchases that will allow it to build homes on 185 acres at RidgeGate.

Castle Rock has also made big moves that are poised to pay dividends as the retail-heavy town persists on its path to greater diversity of industry, more primary employment and good jobs closer to home for its growing number of residents.

With projects like The Meadows residential development underway and large mixed-use developments like Dawson Trails moving through the planning stages, Castle Rock is ready to keep its growth spurt going, although keeping the expansion going at a measured, reasonable pace is the goal for the economic development team there.

“Healthy is the key word,” said Frank Gray, CEO of the Castle Rock Economic Development Council. “You want to see nice, healthy growth. Growth is going to happen in Castle Rock either way.

you want to create an environment where you can get to the highest and best use, and create jobs for Castle Rock residents and places where people want to live and work.”

Retail and dining, two industries that have historically been Castle Rock’s bread and butter, were hard hit by the pandemic, but the area’s draw has kept business running, Gray said.

“Castle Rock has been on fire, even through the pandemic,” he said.

Like Lone Tree, new infrastructure projects will similarly help Castle Rock continue to pursue its goals going forward.

“Without key infrastructure, nothing really moves forward,” Gray said.

Even the unincorporated parts of Douglas County are contributing to the surge in population.

Sterling Ranch, which began new home construction in 2016 after two years of planning and infrastructure work, plus about a decade of legal contention, in July 2021 announced the opening of its third distinct neighborhood, called Prospect Village, within the behemoth site in the northwest corner of the county.

Sterling Ranch is a long-term development play, with full buildout expected to take at least two decades. But it and many other residential developments have their work cut out for them trying to keep pace with the hunger for homes in Douglas County.

The number of households in the county jumped by 27% to just un-

der 131,000 in the 10 years leading up to 2020, according to the demographer’s data, compared with a 15% increase across the metro area, and local residential real estate brokers say that demand for homes in the county has only increased over the course of 2021.

Development in the county can

only go so far, thanks to protections placed on the county’s ample open space, but with cities, towns and unincorporated developments all moving full-steam ahead with their growth plans, there is plenty of runway for the county’s continued expansion, even beyond what it’s seen so far.

Often, they teach customers about more than food

S

ometimes when customers enter Cafe Jordano, a longstanding Italian restaurant in Lakewood, they inquire about the lack of romantic music and quiet ambiance.

Owner Elisa Heitman, who was born and raised in Naples, Italy, takes a moment to explain: that is simply the American impression of her homeland.

“In Italy, the restaurants do not have dim lights and they have lots of people that talk,” Heitman said, “And they’re definitely not quiet.”

That’s just one of the parts of her country that Heitman seeks to share with customers through her restaurant, which has been in the community since 1991.

Heitman and dozens of other restaurateurs across the Denver Metro Area bring the food and culture of their homelands to local communities. Often, they’re correcting stereotypes and connecting Coloradans to novel ideas about far away places.

For Farah-Jane Jean Pierre, owner of Fritay Haitian Cuisine food truck, she’s teaching many that not all Haitian food is spicy and that her home country is more than what is seen on the news. For Grant and Yoona Conrad, owners of Hangry Ohana, they’re spreading Aloha and introducing locals to the sometimes-unexpected flavors of Hawaiian barbecue.

More to Haiti

When Jean Pierre moved to Denver three years ago, the only Haitian restaurant she knew of was closing down, she said. Previously, she had been in New York, where the food of her home country was abundant and easy to find.

With degrees in culinary arts and hospitality and a group of friends encouraging her to start her own restaurant, Jean Pierre soon decided to take a course in opening a food truck. Now,

the recently-opened Fritay Haitian Cuisine food truck sits at 8615 East Colfax Avenue in Denver.

During the time she was preparing to open her food truck, Jean Pierre worked with her mother and aunt, both of whom still live in Haiti, to develop her recipes, she said.

“And then I put my own touch on them,” she said.

The truck serves common Haitian street food like plantains, rice and black beans, poul fri (fried chicken) and griyo (fried pork). Much of the food is prepared in a traditional haitian marinade called epis, which is a blend of herbs, garlic, peppers, vinegar and oil.

With many customers having never tried Haitian food, Jean Pierre often provides samples and explains a bit about her cooking process.

“There’s a misconception that Caribbean people eat a lot of spicy food,” Jean Pierre said.

“But that doesn’t mean all our food is spicy.”

Jean Pierre, who moved to the United States a month after the deadly 2010 earthquake in Haiti, hopes to address other misconceptions about her country as well.

“With everything happening in Haiti right now, there’s bad news all the time,” she said, “But to me, there’s more to Haiti, more than the news.”

She said she hopes those curious about the country will try her food to learn a bit about it.

“You get a taste of Haiti,” she said. “Even though you’ve never been to Haiti.”

Spread the Aloha Grant and Yoona Conrad met in college on the Hawaiian island of Oahu where they both participated in a local ROTC program. Grant started working in the restaurant industry while there and fell in love with the island’s food, he said.

The couple eventually moved to Colorado, where Grant was raised. Grant was working as a district manager for Wendy’s at the time but in 2016, he decided to open Hangry Ohana, a Hawaiian barbeque food truck. Two years later, they opened their first storefront location in Parker and later opened restaurants in Fountain and Monument.

Now, Yoona, who grew up in Hawaii, gets to enjoy the food she grew up with, which isn’t

very common in the Denver Metro Area.

“I get homesick like most people,” she said.

“Grant’s cooking skills and business skills help me not miss home as much.”

The couple used a mix of taste memory, Yoona’s family recipes, and their own flavors to develop the dishes now served in the fast-casual restaurant. Some of the main items include chicken katsu, kalua pork, macaroni salad and bacon fried rice.

It’s not just the food from Hawaii that the couple is providing, it’s also the culture. One thing Yoona likes to do is “spread the Aloha” with their customers, she said.

“Aloha is like a term for love and caring and saying hi,” she said. “It’s a good, warm comfort type of word and we want to instill that in our restaurant culture so our customers feel at home and get a little bit of the island experience.”

Cafe Jordano When Heitman moved to Colorado in 1979, she quickly fell in with the restaurant industry.

She met her then-husband and about a decade later, the couple opened Cafe Jordano – named for their son.

“Everybody said ‘you’re crazy, you’re never going to make it,” she said in an interview with Colorado Community Media.

Now, it’s 31 years later and Heitman says it was reasonable prices and word of mouth exchanges that maintained and grew the restaurant.

Many of the restaurant’s dishes are a blend of traditional recipes combined with their own unique twist, Heitman said.

While visitors sometimes only think of spaghetti or lasagna when they first glance at the menu, Heitman’s offerings include many other dishes like Pollo Elegante, a chicken marsala dish with mushrooms and a splash of cognac, and Cod Alla Pomodoro Fresco, made up of cod, olive oil, tomatoes garlic and basil over linguini.

Heitman’s personal favorite is the linguini with fresh clams.

“It’s what I grew up on,” Heitman said.

The restaurant makes all of its sauces and meatballs in house and buys some ingredients, including their bread, straight from Italy.

‘Disruption’ show opens in mid-January

isruption: Works From the Vicki and Kent Logan Collection” will open Jan. SONYA’S 16 on the third floor SAMPLER of the Hamilton Building, Denver Art Museum, and run through 2022.

This new Sonya Ellingboe exhibit is curated

by Laura F. Almeida, Curatorial Fellow for Modern and Contemporary Art at the museum. The exhibit will feature about 50 artworks, including paintings, sculptures, photographs and mixed media works, the majority of which have not been exhibited before at the museum. Most are drawn from the museum’s Vicki and Kent Logan collection, supplemented with a handful of works from the donors’ private collection.

Included is Cree artist Kent Monkman’s humorous “Artist and Model,” which has appeared previously at the DAM. Arts organizations look to a new year Outlets for creativity gain ground as restrictions continue

As a person who learned to love the arts — visual and performing — as a young child, I have been so saddened by the limitations COVID has placed on our world, near and far. And I’m sure my sadness can’t compare to that of a performer, whose energy comes from sharing his/her talents with an audience, or a skilled visual artist, whose fingertips tingle as a new painting takes shape, meant to speak to another sort of audience out there ... Creativity needs to be

shared ... We see new partnerships developing throughout the area, which is a welcome and healthy sign.

As notices of performances and exhibits arrive in my inbox now, I am excited to sally forth to live performances again, although apprehensive about health issues, of course. It will require a wardrobe of masks and a proof of vaccination in my wallet to feed my soul!

In many venues, seating will be spaced out, and perhaps therefore pricier. Masks are required in all the performance spaces I’m hearing about, starting with our

local Town Hall Arts Center in Downtown Littleton, which will open “Little Shop of Horrors,” directed by Robert Wells, Jan. 28 to March 6. Meek Seymour, a budding botanist who works in a struggling flower shop, discovers a new plant.

It demands to be fed blood and uses foul language. (This one is not for the small set.)

Town Hall has made it through with a devoted, small staff and hard-working board. Its popular education programs for kids have resumed and will hopefully offer summer happy times for budding theatricals and those who want to learn the technical parts of entertainment as well. “Once on This Island” and “The Wedding Singer” will wrap up the spring and run into summer. Watch also for an announcement of “Town Hall Sessions: an intimate concert series.”

Stanton Gallery will next host an exhibit called “Contrast,” opening Jan. 28.

Lone Tree Arts Center and Parker’s PACE Center are offering programming as well, which will no doubt increase.

We hope to gain better understanding of other south area organizations with parallel functions and wonder about possibilities for exchange of ideas and services ...

Wiese said, that he decided to lighten the mood with his magical talents.

“In high school, I was always performing for my friends. Teachers would have me incorporate the tricks into projects,” Wiese said. “It was not until that plane that I knew this was it. I started performing and all that stress just turned into smiles. I thought if I can do this on a plane, imagine what I could do on the stage.”

Wiese, who grew up in Denver, said he went to college at Santa Clara University, doing shows for restaurants in the Bay Area. After a short time, Wiese said, he moved back to the Denver metro area, started his entertainment company and is now performing all over the U.S. with his home state, especially along the Front Range, being his favorite.

Wiese joked that starting his entertainment company seemed like a great idea in 2019 when he had 200 shows nationwide that year.

Then, the pandemic hit, and the entertainment industry went from “100% to zero just like that.”

“I took that time to work and develop my show,” Wiese said. “I wanted to find a way to connect more with the audience.”

In trying to continue bringing smiles to citizens even during a pandemic, Wiese said he performed at various hospitals and groups for children in 2020.

City of Lone Tree spokesman Austin Good deferred to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment when asked about traffic management on the site. The City of Lone Tree is helping to handle overflow onto RidgeGate Parkway and clear access for emergency vehicles coming and going from the hospital, he said.

Spencer said a third testing site at EchoPark Stadium in Parker completed 552 tests the week ending Dec. 15 and 1,550 in the week ending on Dec. 22. The EchoPark Stadium testing site requires preregistration.

Testing is critical to slowing the spread of COVID-19 and the state is “encouraged to see so many people getting tested as a way to

keep themselves, loved ones, and communities safe” from the virus, he said.

He urged anyone with symptoms to get tested, regardless of their vaccination status. Instructions are available on the state website for how to report at-home COVID-19 test results.

A representative of MAKO Medical, which operates the drivethrough locations at Sky Ridge and the justice center, said preregistration makes a significant difference in wait times and traffic clogs at testing facilities.

“The longer it takes us to register the parties on site, the longer it’s going to take folks to get through the site,” MAKO representative Scott Ross said.

Ross said staff at the MAKO facilities have high spirits and are braced to handle whatever level of demand they face in coming days.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, pursuant to Section 38-26-107, C.R.S., as amended, that on January 30, 2022, final settlement will be made by the County of Douglas, State of Colorado, for and on account of a contract between Douglas County and Martin Marietta Materials, Inc., for the 2021 Asphalt Overlay Project, Douglas County Project Number CI 2021-003 in Douglas County; and that any person, co-partnership, association or corporation that has an unpaid claim against said Martin Marietta Materials, Inc. for or on account of the furnishing of labor, materials, team hire, sustenance, provisions, provender or other supplies used or consumed by such contractor or any of his subcontractors in or about the performance of said work, or that supplied rental machinery, tools, or equipment to the extent used in the prosecution of said work, may at any time up to and including said time of such final settlement on said 30th day of January, 2022 file a verified statement of the amount due and unpaid on account of such claim with the Board of County Commissioners, c/o Director of Public Works Engineering, with a copy to the Project Engineer Daniel R. Roberts, P.E. Department of Public Works Engineering, Philip S. Miller Building, 100 Third Street, Suite 220, Castle Rock, CO 80104.

Miller Building, 100 Third Street, Suite 220, Castle Rock, CO 80104.

Failure on the part of claimant to file such statement prior to such final settlement will relieve said County of Douglas from all and any liability for such claimant's claim.
