Chosen family celebrated at Adoption Day Adams County helped 16 children find their families at Nov. 16 ceremony

For a new Adams County Human Services case worker, Christy Talkington said she couldn’t have found a better place to start than with the Pedrozas.

The Adams County family of seven grew by two more Nov. 16, formalizing their adoption of Kylie, 8, and Aliyah,11, in a ceremony at the Adams County Human Services and 17th Judicial District offices in Brighton. It was part of National Adoption Day. The two girls were among a group of 16 kids to find their new families at the ceremony.

It was especially touching for Talkington since she is new to the job.

“They are little lights,” Talkington said of the two girls. “It helps me be a good case worker and helped me grow up, too.”

Talkington and all of the Pedroza family cried joyfully as Kylie and Aliyah officially joined the family.

“I’m very excited,” said Francisco Javier Pedroza, the girl’s father. “Aliyah brings smiles, and Kylie cares about people.”

“I’m very happy now, nobody can take them away,” said Maria Pedroza, the girl’s mother. “Kylie is very caring, and Aliyah is really smart.”

Kylie and Aliyah, in the middle clutching teddy bears, are flanked by their mom, dad and six new brothers and sisters, and a grandma.

Adams County joined more than 400 communities nationwide in celebrating adoptions from foster care on Nov. 16 across the country. According to officials, children spend two years on average in foster care before being adopted.

Adams County hopes to complete Adams County 130 adoptions by the end of the year.

Adams County Chief Judge Donald Quick noted that it’s one of his favorite jobs as a judge. Judges frequently send people to prison and perform marriage ceremonies.

“But for every judge in this room, the one thing as a judge that brings us the most joy is adoptions, where we’re able to help people become families; it’s the judge’s role today,” Quick said.

It’s a formality, he said. His role is to legally acknowledge the new family. But the work building the family began long before he was involved.

“When we perform adoptions, legally we are creating and expanding families,” Quick said. “But the people in this room have already opened their hearts and homes and created their families.”

National Adoption Day was launched in 1999 and officially designated on Nov. 18, 2000. Since then, the annual collaborative community effort has helped to bring to attention the more than 113,000 children currently in U.S. foster care waiting for adoption.

The two remaining candidates for the open Ward 4 seat on the Brighton City Council might not agree on a lot, but they do agree on how they’d differ if they are elected.

“If they want a disruptor, if they want somebody that’s going to turn the city on its ear, maybe Kitty is a better shot,” candidate Lloyd Worth said regarding his opponent Kathryn LeDonne. “But I do listen to people and get their concerns routed to the proper persons that can handle it.”

LeDonne agreed, saying she is prepared to work for changes.

“If you want somebody who has a very calming effect on council, I think Lloyd would do that,” LeDonne said. “But if you want someone who is going to stir the pot a bit and ask questions, that’s going to be me.

And if I don’t get answers that I like my questions, my vote is going to be no.”

In unofficial results, LeDonne led the pack with 718 votes, about 36% of the total. Worth was second with 605 votes, about 30%.

Donald Dill was third with 468 and Dan Sherman was fourth with 226 votes.

Since none of the candidates were able to get a 50% majority, LeDonne and Worth, the top two vote-getters, will face each other in a mail-in runoff. Registered Ward 4 Brighton voters were scheduled to get ballots mailed to them beginning Nov. 20 and must return them to Brighton City Hall, 500 S. 4th Ave., by 7 p.m.

LeDonne said she is a relative newcomer to city politics. She’s a member of the Brighton Planning Board who also makes it a point to attend every City Council meeting, reading through their packets in an attempt to understand what is going on.

“I wanted to know and understand what is going on in our town and what are, if you will, the constrictions, restrictions and restraints, whatever, and how it works,” LeDonne said.

Worth said he has practical experience in local government, wrapping up a term on the 27J School District as the new City Council terms are set to begin.

“The experience that comes with that is pretty valuable. You do learn to govern,” he said. “I think a lot of people just don’t have a great grasp of the City Charter and what our governance style is. As a City Coun-

You don’t want people out there, either putting out fires or starting them by themselves. That’s the manager’s job, and it’s an important difference.”

Worth’s concern is Brighton’s economic growth and how to prepare for it.

“We have to be able to manage the growth and care for it,” he said.

“Growth is fine, as long as you don’t outgrow your resources. If you don’t think we’re going to grow, you have your head in the sand.”

Concerning growth, LeDonne said she is concerned that the city is not doing enough to keep up with Brighton’s infrastructure needs.

“The amount of houses and multifamily going in, we need to catch up on infrastructure,” she said.

New houses, new businesses will need utilities and roads.

“You have to do the infrastructure first,” she said. “We have to grow, but we have to grow responsibly, and not just us. It’s us, but it’s all the cities around us, growing like Mad Hatters.”

Noelle Green had the fastest women’s time of 20:23. In all, 653 racers participated in the 5K run and 372 participated in the GARY HOGAN 5K walk.

Fort Lupton Councilman Carlos Barron said he wants to protect small businesses and promote oil and gas drilling in his run to be the Republican representative to the Colorado State House for District 48.

Barron announced his candidacy for the Republican party’s June 2024 primary in a Nov. 15 news release.

“The essential issues I see here in this district are the attack on small businesses and energy independence,” Barron said. “I want to be an

Cookies and cocoa with Santa: Come visit with Santa, enjoy some cookies, play some games and have a professional photograph taken from 10 a.m. to noon at the Fort Lupton Public Library, 130 S McKinley Ave., Fort Lupton.

There is a new process for getting a photo with Santa. Families will need to sign up for an available time slot when arriving – either the first available time slot or one at a later time slot to best plan the day. Parents should check in with the photographer approximately five minutes prior to their designated time slots. Registration is in person and will not be accepted prior to the day of the event or by phone.

Olde Fashioned Christmas: Northglenn’s Stonehocker Farmhouse, 10950 Fox Run Parkway, will host the annual celebration from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Enjoy holiday music as soon as you enter the door from local performers including the Northland Chorale, Gentlemen Fourte, Gracie and Blue and the Stukey Elementary School choir.

Main St. The day kicks off as Santa comes to town and features free face painting and the Teddy Bear & Friends Tree. The Winter Market returns along South Main Street (near the plaza) featuring unique artists, crafters and artisan food vendors.

The festival features Santa’s Village, with ice skating, ice carving, food vendors, a tree decorating contest, a beer garden and visits from Santa Claus himself. The city will also present a synchronized drone show set to holiday music on Friday night and holiday movies each night of the festival.

Other Saturday events include a breakfast with Santa at 7:30 a.m., a 10 a.m. Winterfest Fun Run 5k, a holiday marketplace and an 8:30 p.m. fireworks display.

Santa and the Slay: From the Makers of Motones & Jerseys, the show follows Santa as he takes a break from his hectic holiday schedule to host a variety show featuring music, comedy and great performances. Music ranges from classic carols to pop hits.

uides in the outdoor industry inevitably come up with collective nicknames for customers. On horseback they’re “dudes,” on the river they’re “mers” — short for customers — and they’re “sticks” WRITERS ON if you’re trying to trick a trout.

THE RANGE Sometimes the terms trend a Jacob Richards little negative — “flatlander” comes to mind, and there’s another name I’ve come to use but need to explain it.

It comes out of what I do: For the last decade, I’ve guided multi-day whitewater fly-fishing trips through western Colorado’s Gunnison Gorge during the summer. Then I spend the fall guiding horseback hunting outfits in wilderness.

It adds up to around 100 nights a year sleeping rough.

I’ve met a lot of people from all over the country, and, sad to say, too many seem oblivious to how scarce clean water is in the outback and also how much work it takes to make water safe for drinking. That’s why I sometimes call them “water poopers.”

Spill a big batch of filtered water, treat a horse like a car rather than a living being, or behave in some other entitled way, and you might get saddled with this moniker. If a client takes offense, I explain that a water-pooper assumes that a flush toilet is necessary to life, and they usually agree: “Yep, that’s me. Never thought about it that way.”

On the river, and in hunting camp, water is precious: We filter every drop of water that we drink. We haul the water from the river or the creek to camp and then let gravity filters purify it, one drop at a time.

On overnight river trips we use a portable toilet setup with a great view, but some clients never get over their distaste of having to use it. At trip’s end, our portable toilet gets packed out, leaving nothing behind.

On the mountain every fall, we usually have to dig two 5-foot-deep outhouse holes at least 40 paces from the main tents. After a stalagmite of poop and toilet paper inevitably forms, the “camp-jack” has the unlucky job of knocking over the tower. We fill in the hole when it’s threequarters full and then dig a new one.

Wilderness guides love saying things like “misery makes memories,” or “embrace the suck.” It’s good for a laugh when rain, mud or a sudden freeze moves in, but it helps make living deep in the wilderness an experience to learn from and remember. It also breaks the water-pooper spell we fall into in the “real world.” Being responsible for our personal needs connects us to the realities of life that modern civilization hides.

Our elk camp is located in an aspen forest lick-

ing down into Gambel oak brush, and every year I notice that the land is drier and hotter. Aspens are not doing well. The mature trees are dead or dying and only saplings seem to have any vigor. A little creek used to run cool enough to hold some fingerling trout, but vegetation is moving higher up the mountain and the creek is warm. The elk rut also happens later in the fall each year.

At some point every season after six weeks in the wild, I drive home, and as I crest the ridge and see the lights of Grand Junction, it hits me: Some 150,000-plus people live in the area, and they all defecate in purified water without a second thought.

For those first few days back in civilization, the absurdity is overwhelming. But I also can see the bigger picture of our careless lives. Living in a wild place separates us from what is essential: Shelter. Energy. Food. Clean water. Waste removal. We’re forced to take individual responsibility for all of those things in the backcountry.

Of course, I’m a water-pooper, too. No one is immune. No matter how you wipe it, we all clean ourselves with dead trees, even protestors sitting in old growth forests.

I might just be a river rat and mule skinner, but I know that many of our most pressing environmental and social issues stem from this waterpooper line of thinking.

Stepping out of the system to take responsibility for ourselves, even for a few days in the wild, can be eye-opening. It’s amazing to realize how fragile our luxuries are, from toilets that whisk waste away to having clean water pour out of a tap.

It is unwise to take these luxuries for granted.

Strong demand among undocumented Coloradans for health coverage

Colorado’s Omni-Salud program - which allows low-income undocumented Coloradans and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients to enroll in affordable health insurance plans with financial assistance - saw a surge in demand at the start of the state’s open enrollment period.

Raquel Lane-Arellano - communications manager with the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition - said the rush to enroll shows that word is getting out about the program, now

“It also shows us that there is such a great need for the program,” said Lane-Arellano, “given that the capacity - which is currently at 11,000 for the Silver Enhanced Savings Program insurance plan - filled up in two days, which was absolutely a record.”

Lane-Arellano said the strong demand should move lawmakers to expand investments in Omni-Salud which aims to reduce costs to taxpayers, including expensive emergency room care when patients without insurance can’t pay their bill.

Critics say the program forces

Colorado taxpayers to subsidize undocumented immigrants’ health insurance against their will, and have called it a violation of the Affordable Care Act. Undocumented Coloradans are also taxpayers, paying nearly $273 million in federal taxes, and $156 million in state and local taxes in 2018.

Lane-Arellano said as the pandemic made very clear, it’s important to ensure that everyone - including front line low-wage workers - can access health care.

“Our communities are healthier and stronger when everyone can get

the care that they need,” said LaneArellano. “A lot of the folks who are here have been a part of our communities for decades, paying taxes, working, and contributing to our state and local economies.”

Undocumented residents can still enroll for coverage through OmniSalud. But unlike some other lowwage workers in Colorado, they will have to pay market prices without financial assistance.

Lane-Arellano said she worries that people may put off seeking care if they can’t afford insurance, which can lead to a cascade of bad outcomes.

Martha was born on April 4, in Texline, Texas. Her parents were Grady and Margery Lucas. She was raised in Clayton, New Mexico, along with her sisters and brothers where she graduated from Clayton High School in 1963 and spent her formative years.

During her time in Clayton, Martha learned the value of honesty, hard work, humility and modesty, which she practiced throughout her entire life.

After graduating high school, Martha moved to Boulder, Colorado. During this time, she met and married, and raised two children. After which she moved to Florida and attended the University of Florida receiving her Bachelor’s degree. After 17 years in Florida she returned to Lochbuie, Colorado were she volunteered, and became a member of the Bright Methodist church

family. In her free time, Martha enjoyed lending a hand wherever needed. She loved visiting her grandchildren.

Martha is preceded in death by her parents, Grady Lucas, her mother, Margery Baxter Lucas, her sister Margaret Elizabeth (Lucas) Richer and her brothers, Eldon “Luke” G. Lucas and Ellis “Jay” J. Tallant, along with many cousins, aunts and uncles. She is survived by her sister Betty Palmer of Oklahoma, two children Michael Bradfield, and daughter Justine Young.

Her grandchildren Jesse, Rylie, Macee, and Brady. Several nieice’s and nephew’s, along with many cousins and loving friends who were her constant companions during her life.

A celebration of Martha’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to one of Martha’s favorite charities, JDRF Diabetes Foundation, and Easter seals.

round Christmastime in 1914, David Dwight Sturgeon’s son fell ill and became bedridden.

Sturgeon, an electrician who would go on to start the Sturgeon Electric Company, devised a plan to dip light bulbs in red and green

indoor Christmas lights — that designation goes to Thomas Edison, who did so in the 1800s, according to Sturgeon Electric’s Marketing Director Erin Stromberg — his innovation spread like wildfire throughout early 20th-century Denver.

“People went past the house and saw it and liked the look of it,” Jason Hansen, History Colorado’s director of interpretation and research said. “And we then as now knew

The idea’s popularity spurred Wayne to organize the first outdoor Christmas lighting contest — which drew hundreds of participants.

In 1945, NBC did a broadcast tribute to Denver and the Sturgeon family for having originated the tradition, according to Stromberg.

Now, Sturgeon Electric — still in business after all these years — celebrates its Christmastime roots by partnering with Colorado Children’s Hospital to hang lights on the homes of kids who are ailing during the holidays.

“This will be the sixth year in a row that Sturgeon Electric gives back to our community by putting lights on the homes of a child who is currently at Children’s Hospital,” Stromberg said. “We’re glad to be able to give back to our community and carry that tradition forward.”

This year, for History Colorado’s Zoom In exhibit — which examines the Centennial State’s history in 100 artifacts — Hansen’s research team looked

into the claim that Sturgeon invented outdoor Christmas lights to see if they could verify what many Denverites know as a piece of local mythology.

“It’s one of those stories where it may just be urban legend,” Hansen said. “And so, we went in and looked into it. I had a team of researchers that were working on that exhibition, and we dug into it trying to disprove it. And we couldn’t. It’s one of those enduring traditions, which is why we wanted to include it in the 100 objects exhibition.”

Thus, there is a strand of Christmas lights on display at the Zoom In exhibit at History Colorado’s Denver museum.

The organization also puts on an annual Christmas light tour that takes merrymakers on a bus ride throughout the city to discuss the tradition’s history and look at lighting displays today.

Metro area teams, athletes take the podium at CHSAA’s Winter Sports Media Day

The annual Winter Sports Media Day at Ball Arena from the Colorado High School Activities Association means fan favorites like basketball, wrestling, hockey, swimming and diving and skiing are right around the corner.

Student athletes, coaches and teams from every region of Colorado Community Media were in the building on Nov. 13, and all were more than ready to get their respective seasons underway.

Here is a breakdown of the events at Media Day by sport.

Girls basketball

Of the nearly dozen girls basketball teams to address the media, three were in (or on the fringes of) Colorado Community Media’s coverage area.

Holy Family Tigers The reigning 4A state champions from just north of CCM’s dominant coverage area were back in Denver to begin their quest for back-to-back state titles.

The Tigers finished 25-3 last year, defeating runner-up D’Evelyn in the state championship 49-44 to claim their first title since 2014. It is the seventh state title victory in the Broomfield school’s girls basketball history.

“When you come to practice you

have to be excellent. When you come to games you have to be excellent,” Head coach Ron Rossi said on their mindset going into this season.

“We’re going to take it one at a time knowing that everyone is going to bring their A-game to us. So we have

to bring our A-plus game.”

D’Evelyn Jaguars The 4A state runner-ups had to wait their turn behind the champions to speak to the media, but the Jaguars are more focused than ever on getting back to the state title game and getting the job done.

After a 27-1 dominant season in 2022, the near Lakewood-based Jaguars ran the 5A/4A Jeffco League last season with a perfect 11-0 record.

Head Coach Chris Olson returns his two leading scorers: Peyton Marvel and Macy Scheer. Marvel averaged a double-double last year with 19.5 points and 12.8 rebounds per game.

She has averaged a double-double each of her first three seasons at D’Evelyn.

“I think there is more pressure,” Scheer said of the upcoming season.

“You know it’s going to be harder.

We lost some good seniors and we know we’re going to have to work just as hard, if not harder. But we’ve been working in the offseason and I think we’re ready to compete. We’re excited.”

Colorado moves closer to implementing a shot clock

Colorado’s high school basketball programs are a bit closer to seeing a shot clock.

The Colorado High School Activities Association’s board of directors officially recommended the use of a 35-second shot clock, effective in the 2026-2027 school year.

This summer, CHSAA’s website said three in five athletic directors and district athletic directors wanted a shot clock. While more than half of the rural schools in the state didn’t want a shot clock, 70% of metro area schools wanted it.

More than 300 of the state’s 351 schools that field basketball programs participated in a survey, according to Commissioner Mike Krueger.

In October, Krueger said the discussion around using a shot clock focused on two issues. One was the cost of installation, and the other was finding people to train and, ultimately, run the shot clock.

“Another important consideration is the education that will be required for our officials and how that training will come about,” Krueger said. “The consensus opinion of member schools across the spectrum, especially of late, seems to be

trending more toward supporting the use of the shot clock. However, there has been a specific emphasis on the need for an implementation timeline that would allow schools the opportunity to prepare for the changes.”

Krueger said the National Federation of High Schools adopted a 35-second shot clock two-and-ahalf years ago, but not as a mandate. Last school year, nine state associations adopted the shot clock, according to Krueger.

Connecticut, Idaho, Minnesota, North Carolina and Oregon will start using the shot clock this season.

Several area coaches said using a shot clock would bring the game in line with college programs, including Byron Gray, the boys coach at Riverdale Ridge High School.

“Some other states already use a shot clock, and every level above high school uses a shot clock in some form. So, it will better align the high school game with the collegiate and pro game,” Gray said in 2020. “Adding a shot clock will also help develop a further understanding of the game. You will need to make good use of time and score.”

CHSAA’s legislative council will have the final say during its meeting on Jan. 30.

Football: Ishmael’s season draws accolades, prospects

When your season stats include almost 2,400 yards of passing, 26 touchdown tosses, more than 700 rushing yards and five touchdowns – numbers that put him atop the heap in class 3A and No. 2 among all Colorado football players (according to MaxPreps) -- someone is going to take notice.

Frederick’s junior quarterback, Gavin Ishmael, is on the receiving end of some of those looks these days.

One such organization taking note is Playmaker’s Corner. It’s a podcast focusing “on the next generation of playmakers in sports on and off the field,” according to its website. In addition, it breaks down film, interviews, rankings and discussions “of all things sports.”

Playmaker’s Corner thought enough of Ishmael’s season to put him in the final four in its selection of Player of the Year in class 3A football.

“It is such a huge privilege to be recognized by them because they do a tremendous job supporting and helping all of us student-athletes,” Ishmael said. “They do a great job with their social media, podcast and overall platform. It’s crazy to think how long I’ve followed them, and now I get the honor of being recognized by them. It’s pretty surreal.”

The nomination followed Frederick’s 45-7 win over George Washington in the Golden Eagles’ last home game of the season.

“I had one of my best games ever. All of my boys were starving so we were about to grab some hot wings,” Ishmael said. “Hardly any restaurants were open, so we ran to Wendy’s. The workers understandably just want to close and go home.

We just grabbed a quick bite. That’s when I found out about the award.

“Let’s just say it was the best late night Baconator of my life.”

Offseason work pays dividends

Ishmael was surprised at the nomination, largely out of respect for his fellow players and the fact that “we are all trying to be as productive as possible.”

“At the end of the day, you have no

control over anyone else, only what you can do and that’s been my approach,” he said. “I really wanted to make every snap, every down, every play count. It’s tempting to check stats and compare yourself to everyone else. I know what it’s like to lead and I definitely know what it’s like to see others pull ahead.”

Ishamel said the athletes he admires and respects “don’t live and die by polls and stats.”

“They focus on optimizing their personal productivity and let the chips fall where they may,” Ishmael said. “I’m not going to lie, though.

When I found out, I was blown away and extremely grateful. You want to do your best, and whenever you’re recognized on any level, it’s important to connect with it and be appreciative.”

His off-season work consisted of focusing on personal goals.

“Physically I pushed myself in the weight room and came up with a great plan with my coaches,” Ishmael said. “I really concentrated on my nutrition, rest and recovery as well. I really put a lot of time in film study and learning as much as I can about the game. I spent a considerable amount of time running routes with my receivers and building that connection with them.”

On-field success has turned into interest from college football programs.

“I think all athletes and their families know what you have to do in order to go to the next level and play in college ..\from getting your film together and your social media presence to going to camps, showcases and game-day visits,” Ishmael said.

“Thankfully, others have forged the path and you just have to do those things to the best of your ability.”

Ishmael has visited some colleges and made calls to coaches. His plan for the next 18 or so months is to “cast a wide net” and talk to as many schools as he can.

“I know it’s not an easy decision, so I’m going to be as thorough as possible and work hard to continue playing football at the next level,” he said.

Part of that process includes showcase camps and 7-on-7 scrimmages.

But his main area of focus is taking

“Showcases are a great way to meet coaches and get connected to schools, and I have found it’s a good way to showcase your abilities but those camps are tough to get quality time with the coaches” Ishmael said.

There are so many players looking for the same thing. I think I realized this when I went to the Manning Passing Academy last summer. I’ve always wanted to go and experience it, and it was a bucket list trip. But I talked to some college quarterbacks there, and their advice was to try to get invites to schools, game day visits and actually go to those if possible.”

It’s not that those camps don’t help Ishmael.

“I’m always analyzing and watching everyone, the guys in 3A, college players and even the pros,” he said.

“I watch play styles that are similar to mine, and I always want to be a strong pocket passer who can use his legs to extend plays and can be a threat with the run when needed.”

Some of that analysis extends beyond the field.

“I watch a lot of podcasts and in-

terviews, not just of football players but elite athletes, free climbers, endurance runners and even Navy Seals,” Ishmael said. “I’m fascinated by their psychology and try to study the mindset of people who do things at the highest levels. So much of what we do is physical, but I truly believe most of it is attitude and mindset. I’m always inspired by that.”

Advice

Ishmael thanked “everyone who has helped me get to where I am.”

And he offered some advice for players coming up through the prep ranks.

“I have some huge dreams and goals that are still a long way off, but I’m so grateful because I have a huge amount of people in my life who have helped me every step of the way,” Ishmael said “One of my favorite sayings is, ‘If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.’ That really says it all, I credit all my success to those who have gone with me on this journey.

It’s not just what others can do for me but who can I help along the way as they pursue their dream.”

Grandview Wolves On the cusp of Centennial and Aurora is Grandview High School.

The Wolves, back-to-back Class 6A champions, rode a bumpy season to the state title last year.

Grandview finished 19-9 and 4-3 in the 6A Centennial League behind Cherry Creek (7-0), Arapahoe (52) and Cherokee Trail (5-2). Head Coach Josh Ulitzky said he’s been fortunate to have extremely talented players in recent years and hopes to ride the Wolves’ championship and momentum again.

“It helps when you have the Gatorade Player of the Year (in Sienna Betts) on your team, who is arguably the best player in the state,” he said.

“It took some time, but the kids really took on their roles. Everybody did their job (last season) so that made it a lot of fun.”

Betts, a junior, recently committed to play for UCLA following her high school career. But fortunately for Grandview, they have her for two more seasons.

Three private-school basketball powerhouses in the CCM coverage area made an appearance on Media Day also.

Holy Family Tigers Similar to their girls team counterparts, the Holy Family Tigers won the boys 4A state championship last season, winning for the first time since both the boys and girls teams won in 2014 in a rare double-championship year for one school.

But in a 17-11 year, many wouldn’t have picked Holy Family to win last year. The No. 17-seeded Tigers knocked off No. 2-seeded Resurrection Christian in the final to become the first-ever No. 17 seed to win the state championship in Colorado.

The Tigers lost five core seniors, but Head Coach Peter Vellico said he’s confident in his group’s ability to beat anybody.

Belleview Christian Bruins In Westminster lies a small school with a big basketball reputation. The Belleview Christian Bruins were the No. 1 seed headed into last year’s Class 1A state championship. Forge Christian Fury (formerly Faith Christian) Forge Christian Academy (more commonly known as Faith Christian until a recent name and ownership change) had a nearly picture-perfect season last year. The Fury captured the school’s seventh state championship and first since 2012, beating Salida High School 54-47 at the University of Denver.

before becoming the team’s head coach, and though he wasn’t able to win a title as a player, he was thrilled to finish the job as a coach.

He spoke on how difficult it will be to replace some championship seniors.

“Replacing a senior is obviously never easy,” he said. “While at the same time, the culture of our program that’s been established even before my time still remains. Any coach will tell you when you have a returning starting point guard, it’s a huge piece for us in Peyton Miller.

The guys sitting here are excited about the opportunity.”

Swimming and diving

Two different student athletes from opposite sides of the region in swimming and diving spoke to the media on Nov. 13.

Charlotte Wilson - Cherry Creek Bruins Cherry Creek clinched its third straight 5A state championship in swimming and diving last season after posting an overall score of 448.

That’s now 29 state championships for the school in Greenwood Village, which is the most in the state by any school.

The average hamburger in Colorado now costs $15

Over at a Denver-area Red Robin restaurant, the Keep It Simple burger costs $13.49, or nearly $15 with tax.

That’s up 31% in a little more than three years, based on old menus posted at restaurant review site, Yelp.com, showing the same nofrills burger at $10.29 in May 2020.

It’s not just Red Robin. A lot of burger joints are getting unwanted attention because of their higher prices, with some consumers sharing their shock on social media. It’s also not just burgers. The cost of eating out at a restaurant in Colorado has increased 28.2% since January 2020, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Price Index. Menu prices have gone up at

most Colorado eateries, and restaurant owners don’t really like to talk about it.

But one can still find a solid burger at a full-service restaurant for under $15. The Cricket Burger at The Cherry Cricket in Denver is $11.50, up 30% since 2021, the restaurant confirmed. Fries are still $4 but now there are two sizes: a half order and full size, which is $6.

“Continuing to provide a delicious product to our guests at a value is paramount to us at the Cherry Cricket. We’re always very hesitant to increase our prices,” Calley McCue, president and chief financial officer for Cherry Cricket’s parent company, Breckenridge-Wynkoop, said in an email. “That said, the dramatic increase in (the cost of goods sold) and labor costs that we’ve seen over the past two years

have, unfortunately, necessitated increased prices in order for us to keep operating.”

The Colorado Restaurant Association & Foundation gets a lot more specific. Earlier this year, the industry group, which has 4,900 member restaurants, put together its own guide to why the price of an average burger has increased to $15.

Restaurants have seen an increase of 54% in the cost of labor, 55% for utilities and 20% for equipment and maintenance. The price of beef? Up 43%. Cheese? Up 79%. And lettuce?

Up 85%.

For restaurants to make the same margin on burgers that they did in 2020, they’d have to charge $22.

“Inflation has had a huge impact on menu prices across Colorado, as has the annual increase of the minimum wage,” said Denise Mickelsen,

a spokeswoman for the industry association. “The cost of running a restaurant continues to skyrocket, and with typical industry profit margins sitting at a slim 3% to 5%, operators don’t have a lot of wiggle room when food, alcohol, energy, labor, taxes and more continue to climb. It all leads to higher menu prices, streamlined menu offerings, limited hours of operation and operator burnout.”

In October, the restaurant association polled its members about prices. Based on the responses, customers can expect prices to continue to increase next year. About 86% of members who responded said they planned to increase menu prices when the minimum wage goes up 5.6% to $14.42 an hour on Jan. 1. Six out of 10 said they’ll have to cut hours or shifts for their teams.
