Ballots have been mailed to households BY SCOTT TAYLOR STAYLOR@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

While the main drama this election season comes later this fall, there is plenty of drama wrapping up later this month in the Colorado state primaries. Primary voting continues through June 28, and Weld County voters can return their ballots by mail or by hand-delivering them to one of the 17 24-hour ballot drop boxes scattered around the county. Weld County itself should be settled with the primary ballot since there are no Democrats on the county ballot at all. Incumbent District Two Commissioner Scott James has the sole spot

on the Republican primary ballot to return to his seat, as do Clerk and Recorder Carly Koppes, Assessor Brenda Dones and Sheriff Steve Reams. The only race that’s not settled is the contest to replace outgoing Commissioner Steve Moreno. Two Republicans, Kevin Ross of Eaton and Elijah Hatch of Kersey are on the ballot for that seat. There are no Democrats listed on the ballot, so either candidate is virtually guaranteed the seat. You can read their profiles on page 8 or online at ftluptonpress.com. The races surrounding the next state legislature are just approaching the starting lines, with only two primary races featuring more than one candidate. In District 48, which includes Fort Lupton, Gabe Evans faces Terry Lee Robert DeGroot. The winner will

son in November. Elsewhere on the Democrat’s primary ballot, State Senator Faith Winter is unopposed seeking the nomination for District 25. She would face Republican Melody Peotter, also alone on the ballot. In State Senate District 1, Republican Byron Pelton has no challengers on the ballot, neither Republican nor Democrat. In major state races, three Republicans are running for the chance to replace incumbent Democratic Secretary of State Jena Griswold. The candidates are Tina Peters, Mike O’Donnell and Pam Anderson. Looking to unseat incumbent Gov. Jared Polis, the Republican ticket has the options of Greg Lopez and Heidi Ganahl. With ballots already hitting mailboxes, election officials say residents
