THE SEASON FOR SHARING

BY BELEN WARD BWARD@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Angel trees around Fort Lupton bring Christmas to 82 families and over 188 kids. “We cannot do this without the community purchasing the Angel tree stuff, it wouldn’t be possible,” Steve Moore Optimist Club. Annually the Fort Lupton Optimist Club organizes the Angel Tree Project by placing trees at businesses with Christmas tags that have the wishes from the families and kids. The community picks a tag and buys the gifts then it’s placed in the box to be picked up by the volunteers to distribute and deliver. “We’ve been helping since 2004 and it’s grown exponentially. In October our district receive an email from Optimist Club seeking referrals from our staff, “ said Angela Buress-Cardenas Butler Elementary Lead Secretary/Registrar. “My staff assistant Arcelia Bocanegra helps me call the Spanish speaking families and I call the English speaking families. We ask the families if there’s a need and how we can help.” My other side-kick Heather Gibbs helps get it all organized and ready to go.” Bulter Elementary Assistant Principal Teresa Rosasco helps by allowing the volunteers to use the gym to organize and wrap the gifts. Then the families are called to pick up the gifts or they will arrange to drop them off the families. This year they placed four trees one at Fort Lupton Pack and Ship, Recreation Center, Dales Pharmacy, and the Fort Lupton Public & School Library. “It’s a great feeling to be able to help the community. We have a lot of support from the school district that allows us to do this. It’s humbling and rewarding” said Buress-Cardenas It always makes me feel kind of great inside and committed to living in this community because the people in this community just Every year before Thanksgiving, First United Methodist Church in Fort Lupton and the Fort Lupton Food and Clothing Bank provide community help each other and share.
