New coffee shop in town joins Dales Pharmacy

Hard Bean Coffee shop opened its doors on October 13, ready to serve its roasted beans and ice cream to the Fort Lupton community.

“I’m not only excited about the coffee, but I’m also excited about the ice cream. I live close, too,” said Mayor Zo Stieber. “It’s great to see it finally come to fruition for Huy. I know he’s worked so hard for this,” she said.

The owners are Huy and Christine Lieu Duong who also owns Dales Pharmacy which is adjoined to the coffee shop.The Dales drive-through pharmacy and coffee shop is located off State Highway 52 and Dales Place. The pharmacy was completed as of October 19, 2020, but due to COVID-19 restrictions, the coffee shop could not be opened right away.

Rosanna Lynn Trujillo-Flores August 26, 1957 - September 12, 2021

Rosanna (Rose) Lynn (Trujillo) Flores, 64, of San Diego, CA, peacefully passed away from COVID, surrounded by her loving family, in Newport, OR, on September 12, 2021.

Everywhere she visited, she made these carvings for professional, family, and friends’ events.

Rose was the second-born of 5 children, born on August 26, 1957, in Denver, CO, to Lucy (Sandoval) and Phil Trujillo. She was raised in Brighton, CO, and graduated from Brighton High School in 1975. Upon moving to San Diego, Rose met and married the love of her life, Felipe (Leeps) Flores on August 23, 1985. Together they made their home in San Diego, CA, where they raised their two lovely daughters, Ashlee and Amber.

In Brighton, Rose worked as a veterinary technician. Upon moving to San Diego, she worked for Cal 1st Union Bank as an executive secretary, eventually retiring as an escrow officer. She also obtained her certification as a massage therapist and volunteered at her local hospital, giving massages to cancer patients. She later attended and graduated, with high honors, from San Diego Mesa College in August, 2011, obtaining two Associate Degrees; Psychology and Art-Fine Art – Two Dimensional Emphasis.

Rose enjoyed traveling and visiting family, several times extending a planned “2-week” visit into a “6- to 12-month” stay when her family was in need of help. Rose also loved dancing, gardening, cooking, canning, and baking. At home, and on her visits, she would clean out the fruits in the yards of those she visited, making and sharing jams, pies, empanadas, breads, and tamales. Rose was an extremely talented artist in many mediums: sketching, painting, photography, and clay.

Even with all that she accomplished, her most cherished moments were spent with her husband, daughters, in-laws, and especially her two precious, young grand-daughters, November and Cambria. She loved them so much and they were always thrilled to see “Nana” when she visited.

Rose left us too soon. She lived as she died, with her strong faith and love of God, courage, and tremendous love for her family and friends. She inspired us with her beautiful zest for life, kindness, gentleness, generosity, patience, gracefulness, and phenomenal talent as an artist.

In addition to her husband and parents, Rose is survived by her daughters; Ashlee Flores (Newport , OR) and Amber Flores (San Diego, CA); grand-daughters, November and Cambria Conte; parents-inlaw, Josephine and Miguel Flores Jr. (San Diego, CA); and sisters, Victoria (Dennis) Young, Sharon Timmerman, Donna (Gean) Abbott, all of Brighton, CO, and Gayleen (Terry) Meyers of Henderson, NV; and 4 nieces and nephews. Rose is preceded in death by brother-in-law, Kim Timmerman.

Mobile phones sought to save lives Drop off used phones to be recycled

Old mobile phones, even old flip phones, can be useful if donated, according to Brighton and Commerce Citys Victim Services Unit.

The Victim Services Unit is wanting old used phones to give to victims of domestic violence that can use the phone in an emergency to save their life, according to a press release.

“We will take any age of phones, including the old flip phone because some seniors cannot use smartphones. These phones are very valuable because victims of domestic violence their phones are taken away from them. With an extra phone they can charge it and hide it and use it to call 911,” said

The Victims Services Unit (VSU) is a joint cooperative unit shared between the Commerce City Police Department and Brighton Police Department. According to officials, in 2020 the VSU helped 4,502 victims and witnesses including 1,398 on-scene responses.

Throughout October donation bins are placed at city facilities to drop off used mobile phones and chargers. All mobile phones in the United States can call 911 without service with a phone carrier. The non-profit organization “Secure the Call,” wipes the personal information on the donated phones and resets them to the factory settings then donates them to victims of domestic violence, seniors, and at-risk individuals who may need to be rescued.

Secure the Call was established by environmentalist Mike Morgan who felt the landfills were get-

ting filled with electronic waste, items that are not biodegradable for thousands of years and contain toxic materials. The solution was to recycle the phones to help victims of domestic violence or are electronically isolated from calling 911, according to Secure the Call organization.

According to the Commerce CityBrighton Victims Service unit, domestic victims happens with any age, race, social-economic status, and in any neighborhood. Abuse can be emotional, physical, sexual, and financial abuse. These types of cases often go unreported.

The signs to look for with domestic violence victims: Fear judgment or stigmatization if abuse is revealed.

Deny and minimize the abuse or make excuses for the abuser.

Continue to love the abuser.

Distance themselves from family and friends.

Have little or no support from

family and friends.

Could have religious, cultural, or other beliefs to justify staying in a relationship.

Mobile phone network change a problem, Weld warns Old phones won’t work as networks phase out 3G

Mobile phone netsworks plans to eliminate 3G coverage by 2022 could impact calling or texting 911 service in case of an emergency, the Weld County Department of Public Safety Communications is warning.

“Please know that this is not something Public Safety Communications has control over; it’s a move by cell phone providers. As big as Weld County is, there may be some people who don’t have access to 4G coverage and those who have older

cellular devices not capable of receiving 4G service,” said Tina Powell, Interim Director Weld County Safety Communications. “Because this change could impact someone’s ability to call or text 911, t’s important people contact their provider to verify their coverage area and that their device will work.”

According to a statement from the Federal Communication Commission, mobile networks are discontinuing 3G networks to increase space for 5G technology. Its discontinuation impacts prepaid customers, AT & T, Verizon, and T-Mobile carriers.

Users of 4G or 5G devices that have Voice Over LTE technology or a traditional landline service will not be impacted by the shutdown.

Voice Over LTE technology allows

placing phone calls over an internet connection than the traditional analog mobile phone lines. So customers using non-smartphones or who live in rural areas with no 4G coverage will be impacted by the elimination of 3G coverage, according to Weld Public Safety Communications.

“This is a concerning issue for some cell phone subscribers but we hope the impact will be minimal.

These types of issues are outside of law enforcement’s control but we certainly hope that citizens will take the appropriate action to make sure they are capable of utilizing emergency services should they need them,” said Weld County Sheriff Reams.

According to FCC, AT&T plans to

complete its 3G shutdown by February 2022, Verizon should finish it’s 3G shut down by December 31, 2022, and the T-Mobile 3G network shut down is by January 1, 2022. Sprints LTE network shut is by June 30, 2022. It also plans to shut down T Mobiles 2G and 3G networks too but has not been announced as of yet.

The FCC recommends those impacted visit their provider’s webpage for the latest information and contact to verify if their device will still work. Board requests game-manager protocols

Two members of the Weld Re-8 School District board of education want the Fort Lupton High School administration to be present at home athletic events.

Cody LeBlanc and Jaime Sierra asked the district to draw up a policy. Neither explained why, either during an Oct. 13 workshop and a September meeting in which they asked for the policy in the first place or in response to repeated emails and text messages.

During the Oct. 13 workshop, the district’s chief operating officer, Jim Roedel, said he surveyed neighboring school districts of various sizes to see how they handled game management. He didn’t recommend a formal policy. Instead, he suggested a combination of job descriptions and communication among the building-level administration.

“If you put a policy in place, you achieve what you want in different

ways,” Roedel said. “But it wouldn’t be flexible. During my time (as FLHS athletic director), I expected one administrator to be at all school activities. It was part of the job description.”

Sierra asked if there was a rule in place from the Colorado High School Activities Association that covers game management. Roedel said there wasn’t.

Even so, LeBlanc directed RE-8 Superintendent Alan Kaylor to be sure that one administrator was in attendance at school events.

The need for this may be moot.

“We cover all varsity home events and some varsity away events as dictated by the league bylaws,”said Principal John Biner. “We have game managers that help cover lower-level events as needed. Obviously, we cover a lot of other events as well, like DECA, cheerleading, band concerts, plays, academic events, robotics, parades and many other events throughout the year.

staff is important, but I don’t think a policy is necessary. We are practicing what you will see in neighboring districts. It’s what’s normal.”

The community of Fort Lupton dusted off the boots and hats for the annual fundraiser Boot Scootthemed event for Boys and Girls Clubhouse at the Fort Lupton South Platte Valley Historical Society on Saturday, October 16, 2021.

“This is just a great opportunity to connect with the grassroots support that we have down here for Fort Lupton. It’s incredible people willing to come out and spend an evening and invest in our local kids. What could be more important,” said Terry Adams Chief Executive Officer Weld County Boys and Girls Club.

Due to the pandemic last year the event was canceled, but this year folks were kicking up the spurs dancing to the retro rockabilly swing music of “Last Call Romance.” Participating in live auctions, dinner, cocktails, and games.

The event has benefited Boys & Girls Clubhouse for over seven with more than 125 South Weld County community members attending the country theme event. The funds raised for the event go directly to the Fort Lupton Clubhouse, according to Weld County Boys & Girls Club officials.

Writing without sight: Brighton native documents history

Being blind, books were a mystery to Brighton’s Jo Pinto early in her life.

“I remember my dad reading a book about Osceola, Seminole Indian Chief in Florida, who fought to keep his people when the government was removing Indians,” said Pinto.

“So at the end of the book, I was sad because the story was over. My dad put the book in my hands and described we could turn the book around and read it again from the beginning.”

- They didn’t remain a mystery, however. Pinto learned how to read with Braille, and between her newfound ability and the stories her parents read to her, she fell in love with poetry.

Now Pinto, who has been blind since infancy, won the 2021 Brighton Cultural Arts Commission award for a Master in Fine Arts.

“I’m excited and humbled because this is my hometown, and it’s important to me. It’s where my roots are,” said Pinto.

Pinto published her first book in 2015, “The Bright eSide of Darkness.” It won first place Indie Book Award for inspirational fiction and received an award from the

Colorado Independent Publishers Association.

Born in Chicago in 1971, she grew up in Brighton.

“I was born prematurely by a couple of months, so when I was in an incubator, it had a high concentration of oxygen, so my lungs were not developed, the oxygen concentration damaged the nerves in my eyes. So, I was probably born sighted, but I was blind by the time I came out of the incubator, “said Pinto.

Pinto was one of the first disabled kids in the 70s to attend Kindergarten at South East Elementary in Brighton when children with disabilities were allowed to integrate into the schools.

“1976 was the big year, when I went to kindergarten that kids with disabilities were allowed to go to mainstream public school,” said Pinto.

Pinto’s mom was Elaine Padilla that was very involved in the community, volunteering, active in schools, athletics, and Platte Valley Medical Center.

Brighton’s Padilla Elementary school was named after her mother.

Pinto was captivated by the stories her parents read to her.

“So, from there on, I started writing stories down on paper because I wanted to catch stories and write them into poems. I caught the fever,”

said Pinto. “My first poem was published in Jack and Jill Magazine when I was 12-years old.”

When Pinto was a junior at Brighton High School, she took an advanced English class and wrote a short story.

Pinto said, “These characters came alive for me - it was an amateur. It was kind of bad writing, but I wrote the story and turned it in and got an “A” and put it away in my scrapbooks.

Pinto graduated from Brighton High School and studied at the University of Northern Colorado received a degree in Human Services in 1992 but was unable to find work in the field.

“I thought I was going to become a social worker, but it didn’t happen. It was tough to get hired. There’s was a lot of discrimination, and it was a brick wall,” said Pinto.

It was the 1990s and the early days of the Internet but there was a word processor and Pinto learned how to use it.

The word processor was a textto-speech screen reading program called “Job Access With Speech” (JAWS). It speaks the text that is detected on the screen. The story she wrote in high school was used to practice on the Word Processor.

Late autumn can still delight anglers and aspen-watchers

T

here are so many pluses awaiting the OUTDOOR outdoors person LIVING during the fall Colorado landscape change of scene.

None, however, equals the mystic, constant color change occurring among the striking aspen groves and the nightly cooling Ron Hellbusch of the small high mountain streams.

The evolution of the aspen tree

colors brings a wave of observers to the mountains. Many are those who chase trout who experience an opportunity missed.

Small streams suggest brook trout, that frisky and colorful small stream trout that becomes more active in the fall. The same period the sky glows with the gold, rust, orange and mixture of brilliant colors of the aspen leave. The gradual process of both natural occurrences offers observers a chance to enjoy both events if we miss the early or late changes.

Let me suggest while you may feel you have missed the prime pe-

riod Colorado Color change. Maybe you have not?

The water-rich tributaries of the upper South Platte River basin crisscross South Park providing fishing and public access worth seeking out.

This expanding valley from Kenosha Pass northwest to Salt Creek Pass above Buena Vista is one of the closer viewing and small-stream angling destinations where visitors will see colors still in transition for just a bit longer and ample small stream fishing in the cooling waters.

Jefferson, Michigan, Terral, Middle Fork and South Fork streams all provide cooling snow

melt brook trout water. US 285 will find South Park in less than a twohour drive from the Front Range.

Division of Parks and Wildlife fishing maps and agency brochures will guide anglers to state campgrounds and parking access. Park County Road maps will open aspen viewing consider within the top 10 view regions in Colorado.

Make plans soon for a drive to South Park. The sights and the streams are calling.

Improve retention with persistent consistency

s we continue to talk about hiring and keeping a productive and performancedriven team, we must include “Consistency” in our “5 C’s for Retaining Top Talent.” This is the WINNING fourth column in WORDS a five-part series, and we will conclude next week with “Culture,” and how to develop that winning culture where people are not only eager to join us but will also want to stay Michael Norton with us.

And thank you all for the email messages, your feedback is always appreciated. Many of you have mentioned a few other “C’s” that should have been included, and yes, I could have easily made this a 10-part series by adding communication, creativity, crosstraining, compelling, caring, compensation, and many others that many of you had suggested.

All great words for sure, and I will do my best to incorporate them in a future column.

When I settled on the 5 C’s, consistency was important because when we reviewed data and sur-

vey results for the reasons people were leaving their position, a “lack of consistency” was cited as one of the challenges they faced.

When I asked for some more detail about that lack of consistency, there were a few areas worth mentioning to help us as business owners and leaders to avoid the same mistakes associated with inconsistencies.

The biggest area of concern was around the lack of consistency in what is said, written on the walls, and published on the company website when it comes to mission, vision, purpose and values. Many exiting employees felt like these words were nothing more than a sales pitch to attract people, appease current employees, and create a public image that sounds good. Sadly, they reported that what was publicly stated was often not lived out by senior leadership, management or ownership of the company.

The second challenge with inconsistency had to do with fairness. We all know by now that no matter how hard we try, there are no secrets anymore. Seems that regardless of sensitivity, personal information such as compensation, consequences, promotions, extra perks, the overall treatment

of team members, the perception is that relationships and unique one-off situations create an environment for team members to question fairness.

The third issue raised by a lack of consistency surrounds goals and objectives. Not only were the goals and objectives constantly changing, but the messaging around expectations was also seen as inconsistent. When we can’t communicate clearly defined goals and objectives, set proper expectations and then inspect what we expect, it is easy to see why our team members get frustrated enough to leave.

Top-performing organizations and businesses of all sizes who make the mission, vision, purpose and values abundantly clear, and then make sure they are lived out, will have a much greater chance of keeping personnel at every level. When we live and work by our values, being fair becomes so much easier. There are times when difficult decisions must be made, and there are times when we need to be firm as leaders, and when we can demonstrate consistency in being firm but fair, this will also help us retain top talent.

We are living in times of incred-

ible change and uncertainty. This means we must be consistent and clear in articulating expectations and how what we all do, every role in the business, works toward the overall objectives of the company.

In times of change goals may shift, and that’s OK if we consistently let everyone know the “why” behind the change and how that changes the expectations of each team member.

If we want to attract and keep tremendously amazing people, let’s remember what author and motivational speaking legend Zig Ziglar said when he shared that the secret to success is “persistent consistency.”

After collecting $610 million from Colorado customers, regulators say it’s time to end Xcel’s pipeline repair fee The Pipeline System Integrity Adjustments fee was supposed to be temporary.

What was supposed to be a quick way to raise money to address pipeline safety issues, a little add-on of about $3 a month for the average household, has lingered on Xcel Energy natural gas bills for a decade - but it may finally end.

Xcel has since 2011 raised nearly $610 million, or three times the initial revenue estimate, from the add-on fee known as a rider.

The company wanted to extend the charge - the Pipeline System Integrity Adjustments or PSIA rider - to 2024, but faced opposition from the state’s Utility Consumer Advocate, the Colorado Energy Office and the staff of the Colorado Public Utilities Commission.

In a settlement agreement now pending before the PUC, Xcel has agreed to strike the rider from bills at the end of 2021. Future pipeline investments would be part of rate cases, which the PUC staff argued,

provide more oversight.

The PUC is slated to rule Oct. 27 on the settlement, which was reached between Xcel and the PUC staff and is supported in full by the Colorado Energy Office and in part by the consumer advocate.

“Ongoing state and federal regulations require continued investment in operating and maintenance in safety and integrity, all which benefits our customers,” Michelle Aguayo, an Xcel spokeswoman, said in an email. “The current settlement gives us a path to transition the recovery of these critical investments from the PSIA rider to base rates.”

The story of the PSIA, critics say, is a cautionary tale of the use and potential abuse of riders, which are attached to monthly bills and allow utilities to pass specific costs - for items such as transmission line construction and fuel costs - directly on to customers without having to wait for a rate case, in which the PUC reviews charges in more detail.

The rider was intended to address federal mandates issued under the 2002 Pipeline Safety Improvement Act. The law was prompted by fatal pipeline explosions in Bellingham, Washington, in 1999 and in Carlsbad, New Mexico, a year later, and by concerns about pipelines being targets in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Xcel embarked on a comprehensive program to replace mains and pipelines, inspect and repair lines and upgrade equipment. Since its initial approval the PSIA rider has been extended four times and Xcel, which serves about 1.3 million residential electric customers and 1.2 million gas customers, was seeking a fifth extension to raise another $438 million.

“While the company has made great strides in improving public safety, the final three years of the PSIA are necessary to achieve important system integrity and safety improvement goals.” Luke Litteken, Xcel Energy’s senior vice president for gas, said in PUC testimony.

PUC staff, however, objected to the extension for a number of reasons, including what they said was a lack of oversight.

“Riders should be limited and be used sparingly and the name of the rider should be clear so consumers know what it is.”

Some of the riders on the Xcel electricity and gas bills are listed as CACJA, ECA, GRSA and DSMCA. An explanation for each is listed in small print on the back of the bill.

“If you look at your electric bill there are seven riders and they can add up to half the bill,” said Bill Levis, the former director of the Office of Consumer Counsel, and a consultant for AARP, which represents retirees and older citizens.

The counterargument is that consumer dollars are going to fixed projects and funding programs that often have broad support, from closing coal-fired power plants to increasing renewable energy and promoting energy efficiency.

As for the PSIA rider, Schonhaut said “enough is enough. This has been going on longer than the commissioners intended it should.”

The PSIA went into effect in 2011.

When then PUC Commissioner Matt Baker, acting as the hearing officer, approved the rider he said he expected it to expire in three years “in order to adequately protect the ratepayers of Colorado,” according

Spiders: It’s that time of year Common spiders that sneak into your home and how to deal with them

This time of year, eight-legged creatures can take a crisp fall breeze as an open invitation into our homes.

James Fiala, owner of Environmental Pest Control, sees people dealing with spiders indoors during this time of year.

“All spiders are going to try to get in. They try to overwinter is what they do,” he said.

Fiala has some tips for unwelcome guests in your home as it gets colder.

“Vacuum cleaners are very powerful pest control tools,” he said.

He recommends vacuuming around the edges of your house and avoid storing things right by entry doors.

“I always tell people: Minimize what you have by the foundation of the house, clear out the window wells of your house. Window wells are chronic for spiders, by the way.”

Fiala says now is a great time to clean out your window wells, which you should be doing twice a year.

They can serve as breeding grounds and hospitable habitats for spiders trying to overwinter in your home.

Fiala recommends if you see a spider that does not look friendly, do not be afraid to use your shop vacuum to get rid of it, or even break out the glue traps to mitigate future problems.

to humans but resemble the brown recluse, which does not naturally occur in Colorado. Funnel weaver spiders are darker brown and lack the characteristic “violin” shape that brown recluses have on their backs.

Students encouraged to enter radon awareness contests STAFF REPORT

Colorado students are invited to participate in the 2022 National Radon Video and Poster contests.

The contests take place annually through a partnership between the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), the Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The contests provide students with an opportunity to creatively raise awareness about the im-

portance of radon testing, and to inform people of the dangers of radon in their homes, states a news release.

Students between the ages of 9 and 14 are eligible to participate in the poster contest, and the video contest is open to students between the ages of 14 and 18. Students must be enrolled in a public, private, territorial, tribal, Department of Defense or home school; or be a member of a sponsoring club such as scouting, art, computer, science or 4-H. Contestants have the option

to choose between five radonawareness topics for their poster or video entries. Judging criteria for the poster contest includes content accuracy, visual communication of topic, reproducibility and originality. Video entries must also be original, and created as a 30-second public service announcement/commercial-style video that encourages residents to test and/or mitigate their homes for radon.

State winners will receive $300 for first place, $200 for second and $100 for third. Teachers of students

with winning entries will each receive $100. The first-place poster and first-place video will represent Colorado in the national contest.

Poster and video entries must be received by Nov. 20.

Only one entry per student is allowed.

“I typed my story in the word processor and thought it is awfulI can’t believe I got an “A” for thisbut the characters are still alive.

I edited and learned how to cut, paste, and move words around, deleted, and added- it got better,” she said Pinto lived in a couple of rough neighborhoods in both Brighton and Greeley with her late husband. He got sick with Lou Gehrig’s disease and his day-to-day care fell to her. She continued to write, and the couple also helped out the working parents in the neighborhoods by taking care of their children.

When Pinto’s husband passed away, she decided to go back to school at Metropolitan State University at Denver graduated with a degree in nonprofit management, grant writing, and fundraising in 2004. She started a business proofreading Braille textbooks working from home and raising her daughter Sarah.

Pinto published another book titled “ Daddy Won’t Let Mom Drive the Car”: True Tales of Parenting in the Dark.” It’s available on Amazon.

Technology, she said, has become her friend.

“There are electronic machines that hook to your computer to read Braille, but I still use a computer that talks to me, so I’ll type and it echoes back what I type. I can navigate the internet

through speech. The program reads Word, Excel documents, and emails programs on the Internet,” said Pinto.

It was difficult for Pinto to publish her first book in 2015. There was some interest, but it did not fit in publishers’ categories.

“Today, I could publish on Amazon and publish whatever I want. It is different today from 30-years ago, I couldn’t imagine self-publishing my books on Audible now to listen to it,” said Pinto.

Pinto currently serves on Brighton Historic Preservation Committee and was interested in working with the committee because she proofreads textbooks.

“I think history in schools is shortchanged because kids learn names, dates, places, and it’s boring- they don’t relate to it.

History is about local histories, Bromley farms, the Brighton Armory and people,” said Pinto.

Pinto said the committee is working on oral histories interviewing people who live in Brighton writing their stories while they’re still alive so they can preserve them for people to read and see them on videos when they’re not here anymore.

What is in the future?

“I have another book coming out in an anthology in the spring. It’s a combination of cookbook and history. My memories are about tamales- four generations of my family making tamales,” said Pinto.

“The PSIA has outlived and outperformed the commission’s initial intent for this rider, contributing to my concerns about the use and abuse of riders,” she said.

The state energy office opposed renewing the ride because it places major energy investments outside the planning and review for the state’s push to reduce greenhouse gases and move away from fossil fuels, including a law requiring gas utilities to develop “Clean Heat” targets to cut emissions.

“Current state policy requires a transition to a lower-carbon economy, including deep emission reductions from fossil gas use in buildings,” the

energy office’s policy director Keith Hay said in testimony. “CEO is concerned that maintaining the current approach of using the PSIA rider to recover safety and integrity investment costs does not provide sufficient opportunity for the commission to assess the company’s gas infrastructure spending.”

Cory Skluzak, a Utility Consumer Advocate rate analyst, said the rider had led to “mission creep” and that Xcel had benefited from extraordinary cost recovery.

Love for public lands is at heart of business Englewood-based Travel Posters captures experience of journeys

Blair Hamill was looking for a way to make a living as an artist — for something that would unite his love of this country’s public lands with his talent as a landscape painter and his experience as a graphic artist.

“What could I come up with that would become a more marketable form of my artwork? That could sustain us as a business?”

Hamill said he asked himself.

Travel Posters was the answer.

Hamill creates images that capture “the American travel experience” for posters, coffee mugs and coasters. The outdoor scenes have strong lines, distinctive shapes and a graphic feel. He draws on his former career as graphic designer, his time as a fine art oil painter and on a love of the natural world that extends back to his childhood.

Hamill moved the business he co-owns with Lauri Hamill, his wife, to Englewood in 2019 after posters overran the basement and garage of their home near Littleton.

“This is a neat little neighborhood down in here,” Lauri Hamill said, referring to the engineering firms, landscape design companies, auto repair shops and “cool, creative businesses” that make up the area around their studio and warehouse space at 3638 S. Jason St. Plus the proximity to Santa Fe and Hampden make deliveries and pickups a breeze, she said.

The former teacher began working at the business full time in 2019 after retiring early.

At Travel Posters, she’s the organized counterpoint to her creative husband.

“We work really well together,” Lauri Hamill said. “Yin and yang.”

Like her husband, Hamill loves to hike, camp, snowshoe — anything that gets her outdoors.

The couple’s travels inspire the business’s designs. This spring, the twosome went to Canyonlands National Park in Utah. Last fall, they explored New England. And now, majestic Candlestick Tower and colorful West Quoddy Head Lighthouse are among Travel Posters’ extensive catalog of illustrations.

With the help of two employees, the Hamills sell their products through their online store and at fairs and festivals. Customers range from individuals to small businesses like General Store 45 in Littleton to national parks in Colorado and beyond.

The pandemic, however, disrupted their business last year. The Hamills did only two art shows in 2020 compared to the 42 they worked the previous year.

Yet people flocked to the country’s natural places in record numbers last summer and orders from national parks eventually came in. After all, the Hamills aren’t the only ones that love the outdoors.

“Even though our show business and festivals basically stalled, we really made inroads with online and with our public lands accounts,” Blair Hamill said.

Enthusiasm for the outdoors, and for products that commemorate people’s time there, has persisted. Business for Travel Posters in 2021 is already better than it was in 2019, according to the couple.

Hamill understands that travel sparks memories and emotion. He’s done about 250 designs for Travel Posters so far — and whether it’s a cityscape, a mountainside or a natural wonder, he has a story to go with each one.

A parrot paradise in the country

Near the corner of County Roads 13 and 158 in rural Elbert County, about 12 miles southeast of downtown Parker, large, vibrantly colored parrots live on the grounds of The Gabriel Foundation.

The foundation is a “parrot welfare organization providing for the complete physical, psychological, and environmental well-being of the parrots in our care,” its website says.

It also arranges adoptions of parrots, with the motto: “Adopt, don’t shop.”

Founded in 1995 by lifelong parrot lover and avian consultant Julie Weiss Murad, the nonprofit foundation was first based in Aspen, but moved to the rolling hills north of Elizabeth in 2005. Currently, the property houses roughly 400 birds, though the foundation hopes to work its way to 350 birds so each will have more space and receive even better care.

Asked why there are so many parrots in need of homes, aviary operations manager Jessica Boone explained that many parrots live extraordinarily long lives. “Many of the birds who come through the foundation have outlived their owners,” she said.

Boone also said that many of the foundation’s birds come from unfortunate circumstances. “A lot of the birds come from hoarding situations, while many come from homes that cannot afford to take care of such a maintenance-heavy pet.”

adopted out, with more than 100 birds having been rescued since the start of 2021. Since the inception of the foundation, thousands of birds have come through the doors of The Gabriel Foundation and have been adopted out to families.

Staff members at The Gabriel Foundation say they work diligently to ensure that the birds they adopt out go to safe, loving homes. Before visiting the foundation for the first time, potential adopters must take online courses about parrots and parrot care.

Potential adopters are also required to visit The Gabriel Foundation at least five times to participate in bird education. On their visits, potential adopters learn about diet, enrichment and enclosures. They also do extensive touring to narrow down which bird is right for them and their family. Potential adopters are also required to provide photos of their athome enclosures before they are able to take the birds home.

Many of the birds at the foundation have their own large enclosures, while some have chosen to pair-bond and live together. Some, like the macaws visible from County Road 13, spend a lot of their time in groups.

They are divided by sex to avoid breeding.

The birds are given regular baths and are fed a varied and nutrient-rich diet comprising everything from leafy green breakfast salad to hearty nuts and grains. They also have an abundance of toys and items for chewing.

Many locals and those within the parrot community donate cardboard boxes and old phone books and newspapers for chewing. The staff and volunteers also make many of the toys the parrots regularly play with.

The Gabriel Foundation currently has 15 employees and roughly 100 active volunteers.

“I love working here because my day is never the same,” said Boone, a decade-long staff member. “I also love working around the birds because I think of them as individuals with their own personalities.”

Like many nonprofit organizations, The Gabriel Foundation has been impacted by COVID-19. Prior to the start of the pandemic, staff gave regular tours and held events for visitors. Now, tours are curtailed and visits ate by appointment; go online to thegabrielfoundation.org for information.

ONGOING North Outfall Project The city of Brighton said major work is in store for the North Outfall Project.

Construction will cut Bridge Street to one lane of traffic in both directions from Fifth to Eighth Avenues.

The restriction is in place 24 hours a day through Friday, Nov. 5.

Message boards will be in place, as will traffic control devices. City officials said the best alternate roads are Bromley Lane or Basesline Road.

Police investigate dog attack STAFF REPORT

Fort Lupton police continued to investigate an Oct. 12 dog attack.

It happened in the 100 block of Fifth Street. A Facebook post from the department said several people called to report a pit bull attacked a smaller dog and that bystanders’

attempts to end the attack were not successful. The smaller dog’s owner took the pet for a walk. The pit bull came out of a yard.

When officers arrived, they saw the pit bull’s jaw locked around the throat of the smaller dog. The social media post said officers tried to tase the the pit bull several

times without success in either stopping or slowing the attack.

An officer fired one shot, striking the pit bull. The smaller dog was released. The pit bull remained aggressive until it found its way to a nearby porch.

The post said a dart gun tranquilized the pit bull, which was

taken to a veterinary clinic. The smaller dog’s owner transported his pet to a nearby veterinary clinic.

From league champs to first-time regional champs Fort Lupton preps for run at state 3A softball tournament

LIMON – Fort Lupton High School’s softball team made it to the state playoffs for a fifth straight time over the weekend.

The only thing different about this trip is the Bluedevils are regional champions. FLHS captured its first regional crown by beating Delta 9-3 and by beating the host Limon Badgers 12-0 Oct. 16.

FLHS coach Albert Vasquez was happy with the win against Delta – the win that put the Bluedevils into the state tournament -- but not with the aesthetics.

“As a coach, you always want to have high expectations. There’s a certain way you want to win,” said Vasquez. “A win is a win, and we’re in the dance.”

Shortstop Gen Hunt had two RBIs. One came on a triple in the first inning to drive home courtesy runner Janessa Martinez. She also drove in a run in the second inning when she was hit by a pitch. Starting pitcher Sammy Gonzales scored on that

play.

Hunt added a double and scored a run in the sixth inning.

“They were deep in the count. I was thinking inside pitch, and they were outside,” she said. “I hit both of them to the right side. They were pretty down the middle .. just a little bit outside. But that’s my favorite spot.”

Jill Robinson had two hits and two RBIs for the Panthers. Gonzales struck out 11 and scattered eight hits en route to the complete game win.

“The pitching was consistent,” Vasquez said. “She did a great job of throwing to spots and not trying to throw it through the bats. I was proud of how she hit her spots. The hitting was OK. That’s one of the things we’ve been doing really well the past two weeks. Today, we could have done a little better job of taking the inside half away. We put up nine runs and put them away.”

The Panthers loaded the bases in the first inning after a walk and a singles by Tatem Miller and Juelz Sandoval. Gonzales retired the next three to keep Delta off the board.

Hunt said the Bluedevils fought through that rough start.

“After that, we started picking things up with our hitting and cleaning up our fielding,” Hunt said.

municated pretty well.”

FLHS rolled over the host Badgers 12-0 in the regional championship game. Taylor Fells threw a threehitter and struck out 10. She also added two base hits, as did Gonzales.

Julissa Galicia recorded two stolen bases, too.

“We like to see them have that killer instinct,” Vasquez said. “That’s

something we work on is taking the inside half away from teams.”

The state tournament begins Friday, Oct. 22, at Aurora Sports Park, East Colfax Avenue and Tower Road.

Pairings were due out Oct. 18, after press time.

“I’m confident that we’re going to work together well, do our best and show up,” Hunt said.

Frederick rallies to take state tournament slot

Warriors lost, then beat Golden to make state field

THORNTON – Frederick and Golden high schools played twice in the class 4A regional tournament at Riverdale Ridge High School, which wasn’t what coach Roger Dufour was anticipating.

After a 9-8 loss in the morning session Oct. 16, FHS bounced back to beat the Demons 12-6 and qualify for the state 4A softball tournament.

It starts Friday, Oct. 22, at Aurora Sports Park, East Colfax Avenue and Tower Road.

GHS built a four-run lead in the opener before surviving a late Warriors’ rally to pick up the win.

With two outs, Kyla Mares and Ali Davis singled to score Haley Howell, who walked earlier in the inning.

Kaitlyn Meyer’s double scored Mares and Davis. But Golden’s CJ Sherman was able to retire the side with the tying run standing at second base.

“We came out a little flat this morning,” Dufour said. “I’m not taking anything away from Golden.

They swing it. They come up to the

plate with confidence. But I didn’t think we played to our best. We were right in that game this morning.”

His advice to the Warriors was pretty straight forward.

“The big thing is I told our girls, ‘You stay up, no matter what,’” Dufour said. “I’ve seen it too often where the team coming off that second-game loss (in this case, Riverdale Ridge beat the Demons 11-1) is a little flat. That was the case today. We came out fired up. It took them a few innings to get going.”

In the nightcap, Frederick built a nine-run lead before GHS cut it to three runs in the middle innings.

Frederick countered with a tworun, sixth-inning rally to settle the issue once and for all. Howell, who was the winning pitcher started things by reaching on an error. Bella Hewitt’s double brought home on run. Kaila Mares on another Demons’ fielding error, which brought home Jaelyn Lewis with FHS’ last run.

Sais and Clapp had three hits in the state tournament-clinching win. Avery Salisbury drove in two runs. Hewitt, Howell and Davis had two hits.

Frederick’s other win in the tournament was at the expense of Palisade High School by a score of 14-0 in three inning. Howell drove in two runs for the Warriors. Davis,

who threw a three-hitter and picked up the win, helped cause at the plate with a pair of base hits. Clapp also had two base hits.

“It was a total team effort,” Dufour said. “Haley struggled a little bit this morning. She gathered her composure and threw a pretty strong (second) game (against Golden).”

The state tournament pairings were due out Oct. 18, after press time.

“Even at regionals, I said you have to beat the team in front of you,” Dufour said. “I know there was one upset. At this point, you don’t have to beat them all. You just have to beat the one you’re matched up with.”

CHSAA to start new playoff structure next year

AURORA – For the Colorado High School Activities Association, the playoff structure is a case of “out with the old and in with a new version of the old.”

CHSAA’s board of directors won’t use CHSAA’s Ratings Performance Index as the sole means to choose playoff teams starting next year.

Instead, the method will be a combination of CHSAA’s RPI numbers and ratings from MaxPreps. This applies to team sports: baseball, basketball, football, soccer, softball and volleyball.

League champions and winners

of district tournaments for smaller schools, such as Stargate School in Thornton and Fort Lupton High School, still earn automatic spots in their respective state tournaments.

Brad Cochi, director of digital media for CHSAA, said a committee survey found 83% in favor of what was called “a universal tournament capture system” to choose the field for all CHSAA sports. Of those, almost two-thirds preferred the combination of RPI and MaxPreps rankings.

the need to look at alternative methods to capture state tournaments,” CHSAA Board President Luke DeWolfe said in a statement.

“Because this is a board policy, the board identified that the best avenue to do that would be to have a committee formed to look at some alternatives.”

Head-to-head record is the tiebreaker for any final postseason qualifying spots, Cochi said.

The present postseason criteria (CHSAA RPI rankings) continue through the end of this school year.

Cochi said the board did not take up the issue of seeding for postseason play, just the means to qualify.

“The seeding process will be

addressed at a later date by sports committees and the CHSAA legislative council process,” Cochi said.

CHSAA board member Ernie Derrera, former athletic director at Frederick High School, said there was a desire in the state to look at how teams qualified for postseason play.

“There needed to be a way that we could find a process that most people thought was fair,” he said in a statement. “Once our committee got together, we started with the survey, and we examined that data.

I think the group we had was an experienced group that all came in with open minds and looked at the survey for what it was.”
