The Arapahoe County Detention Center was built in 1986 to hold 386 inmates.
Today, there are upwards of 1,000 people in the jail. To better serve this population, Arapahoe County is embarking on a $46 million project to add more space for medical and behavioral health care and to increase the capacity of the kitchen and laundry spaces. About 65% of the project will be funded by dollars from the American Rescue Plan Act, or ARPA. “We’re very appreciative to our

congressional delegation (for passing) those bills to get the money into the hands of the county,” Sheriff Tyler Brown said at a Nov. 30 press conference. “And to the county commissioners for committing to our vision, committing to our process of making sure that we’re treating the patients that are housed here at the Arapahoe County detention facility humanely.” SEE JAIL, P10
