Officials with the NAACP and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Colorado Holiday Commission raised concerns about student safety following the spread of a video showing a Cherry Creek middle school student expressing hatred against Black people.

In the video, shared with Colorado Community Media, a child used a racial slur and said Black people should “not be alive right now.” The child said that he hates the color of their skin.

According to the Rocky Mountain NAACP, the video is of a West Middle School student and was shot in September.

The Cherry Creek School District responded on Nov. 15, the same day as the press conference. The district said that it was first made aware of the racist video was recorded in September and that it was created outside of a school setting by the student and shared in a group text.

“The language in the video is hatefilled and we took swift action to address this unacceptable behavior,” the school district said in a statement. “Administration and law enforcement acted immediately to investigate the situation.”

The district added: “Students found to be responsible faced sig-

nificant discipline and their parents were responsive to the severity of the situation. Due to the privacy rights of students, we cannot discuss specifics of discipline.”

Portia Prescott, the president of the Rocky Mountain NAACP, said that she has received comments from concerned parents about the video since it first surfaced about a month ago expressing fear for students’ safety.

The Rocky Mountain NAACP State Conference said it had been informed of Black students being threatened and considered the matter concerning enough to warrant an “emergency” press conference.

“We are late, obviously, two months later, but unfortunately, that’s how viral works,” Prescott said while standing outside of West Middle School. “It got to a bunch of kids.”

Prescott said a clip of the student was reshared online and eventually shared with children who showed it to their parents.

According to the school district, a letter was sent to West Middle School families on Sept. 29 from Mónica García, the school principal.

In that letter, García said the school “dealt with some incidents of racist speech at our school and in our community,” calling it unacceptable.

for families to talk with children about discriminatory behavior and hate-motivated language.

Although the school district took action, Prescott said school leaders should have addressed it more publicly and shared information on a school website with resources for students and families.

Vern L. Howard, the chairman of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Colorado Holiday Commission, said parents have expressed concern that the district did not handle the situation properly. He said the issue was serious enough to warrant involvement beyond the middle school.

“There should have been a district-wide email that went out to parents letting them know that this threat or this rhetoric existed and

then how they handled it,” Howard said.

Howard said some parents who have voiced concerns did not feel comfortable speaking at the press conference because they do not feel safe.

Prescott said the NAACP is shouldering a lot of complaints from parents because they feel like the school district is not listening.

“We need to talk about, ‘What is public safety for parents?’” she said.

She added that she does not want to blame anyone and that she views the video as a cry for help.

“It’s not a parent issue, but it is all of our issues,” she said.

Prescott and Howard said they want to work with the community and the school district to protect students and make sure everyone feels safe.

“That’s why we’re here today,” Prescott said. “We’re here to come up with new solutions, to help the schools.”

Shared Visions exhibit celebrates tactile art

Instead of simply looking – as they are normally limited to doing – visitors in a gallery last week rubbed, poked, ripped, squeezed and held the art.

They were at the Shared Visions exhibition, a tactile art show put on through a collaboration between students from Arapahoe Community College and the Colorado Center for the Blind.

The exhibit, which will be on display through Dec. 5, features paintings, installations, ceramics and mixed media artwork, all of which visitors are encouraged to touch.

“It’s making artwork accessible to a bigger group of people,” said Nathan Abels, a painting professor at Arapahoe Community College. “It’s

expanding concepts of art – why couldn’t art be touched, right?”

Incorporating senses beyond sight The first iteration of the Shared Visions exhibit went on display in 2014, when Abels and his colleague at the Colorado Center for the Blind, Ann Cunningham, decided to collaborate.

The Colorado Center for the Blind is a training center that offers programs to teach blind individuals skills and self-confidence to work toward independence, opportunity and success.

Several students, instructors and alumni from the center created art for the exhibit, as did students from Arapahoe Community College’s painting and ceramics classes.

SpaceX rocket booster arrives at new home in Littleton

A SpaceX Falcon 9 first-stage rocket booster has been installed for static display in Littleton on the DISH Network campus, along the east bank of the South Platte River southwest of the intersection of Bowles Avenue and Santa Fe Drive. A 154-foot SpaceX rocket booster has arrived at its new home outside of the DISH Network Corporate Offices in Littleton, on the southwest quadrant of the intersection of Bowles Avenue and Santa Fe Drive.

It is a Falcon 9, which is a type of reusable rocket that SpaceX uses for repeated launches. According to SpaceX’s website, the Falcon 9 is the first orbital-class reusable rocket in the world.

This particular booster is being repurposed as an exhibit, sitting atop three pedestals on the DISH Network campus. It sits about 12 feet in the air, crossing over Little’s Creek Trail, Littleton Public Works Director Keith Reester said.

DISH Network, a satellite televi-

sion company headquartered in unincorporated Douglas County, approached the City of Littleton in 2021 to pitch the project, according to the city.

Reester said SpaceX donated the booster to DISH, and the maintenance and security of the exhibit are DISH’s responsibilities.

The city helped with the regulatory side of the project but has no direct costs because the Telluray Foundation, a local foundation, provided a $2.4 million grant to cover the costs of project development and installation.

The Telluray Foundation declined to comment for this story.

School volunteers face higher bar than board members for backgrounds

Amid the controversy over new Englewood School Board memberelect Davon Williams and his criminal background, residents have questioned whether or not he would be permitted to volunteer at the district he’s representing based on its background check requirements.

Williams, who is scheduled to be sworn in to the Englewood school board at 6 p.m. on Dec. 5, has a court appearance set for 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 6 for a felony car-theft accusation stemming from an incident in 2019.

The Colorado Judicial Branch online docket shows Williams’ appearance on bond is set for a one-hour appearance on bond hearing in Adams County Court Division 6 in Brighton.

According to Superintendent Joanna Polzin, the background requirements for the district are “based on Board Policy KI and IJOC.” Polzin said there are different requirements for school board members to interact with students and for people to volunteer at school events such as field trips.

“Visiting a school and volunteering are viewed as two different purposes in Englewood Schools according to our board policies,” Polzin said.

District 3 State Rep. Meg Froelich, D-Arapahoe County, did not have a lot to say about the issue, but told

the Englewood Herald in an Nov. 13 email that she is “upset about this situation but (has) only begun to look into state law (or) possible solutions.”

“I need to meet with my local Englewood activists and community members,” Froelich said.

Board Policy IJOC states that because Colorado law requires school districts to conduct background checks for potential employees applying for positions the Englewood School Board “determined that the need exists for similar background checks of volunteers who work with the school district’s students.”

“Such background check may include but not be limited to making an inquiry to the Colorado Department of Education, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, and/or other law enforcement agency to determine if there is any information on record indicating that the individual has been convicted of a crime involving unlawful sexual behavior or unlawful behavior with children,” the policy states.

Additionally, it says people who fail to provide the proper information to complete a background check will not be able to volunteer with the district.

“The decision made by the school district concerning an individual’s fitness to volunteer in the school setting shall be final,” the policy states.

LPS swears in new members, says goodbye to Reichardt

The Littleton Public Schools Board of Education officially swore in its recently-elected members and said farewell to one who has served the district for many years.

Lindley McCrary and Chérie Garcia-Kuper took their oaths of office on Nov. 16, after the district certified the unofficial election results that declared them victorious.

McCrary is beginning her second term on the board while GarciaKuper is taking her seat for the first time. Garcia-Kuper is replacing Robert Reichardt, who has reached his term limit.

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the (Littleton Public Schools) community for electing me to serve on this board for a second term,” McCrary said. “It is an honor to serve this community in this capacity and I am incredibly excited for the work ahead.”

She thanked Garcia-Kuper, Michelle Redfearn and Brian Macaulay

She also thanked her family for their support throughout the process.

Garcia-Kuper said she worked hard throughout the campaign process and it is amazing to officially be on the board.

“I feel excited and humbled that I was elected to serve the students and staff of Littleton Public Schools,” she said. “And I cannot wait to get to work.”

The board expressed their gratitude to Reichardt, who has served on the board since 2015.

“Robert, you have devoted eight years of selfless service to this community – and with every decision you have made, you have done so in the best interest of students,” said President Angela Christensen. “You have taught me to be a better board member and a better leader, and I am so grateful for your support of me, of this board and of this district.”

Since he has reached the end of his time on the school board, Reichardt will continue his leadership in the community by serving District 3 on the Littleton City Council.

“I hope it’s been clear that I’m really grateful for the time and the opportunity that I’ve had to serve on this board and for the collegiality I’ve had amongst my board members and amongst the staff,” he said.

“This has been a wonderful experience.”

Reichardt reflected on some of the board’s accomplishments over the past eight years, including changing start times, passing a bond and a mill levy override, changing boundaries,

closing schools, navigating the pandemic and hiring a new superintendent.

“I feel like I’m leaving the district in good hands,” he said, highlighting the district’s educators, staff, administrators and board members. “I’m so grateful to everyone who ran for the board and I’m so grateful that our community chose Chérie as my replacement.”

After the new board was seated, the members elected their officers.

Christensen will continue to serve as the board’s president, with Andrew Graham as her vice president.

McCrary will remain treasurer and Joan Anderssen is the new board secretary. GarciaKuper is the board’s new assistant secretary.

Arapahoe County will certify the election results on Nov. 27.

After about two hours of public comment, Commissioners Jessica Campbell-Swanson, Leslie Summey and Carrie Warren-Gully voted to approve the proposed changes.

“Our job, as a board, is to protect human and environmental health, and that is what we are doing while still allowing for oil and gas operations,” Campbell-Swanson said. “I’m proud of the work our community has done, that our county staff has done and how industry has been willing to collaborate on this prudent and protective regulatory program.”

The new regulations will apply to all future oil and gas facilities in the county.

tures to be 3,000 feet, with a possibility for oil and gas developers to reduce this to as little as 1,000 feet in some cases with special permission.

Occupied structures include homes, offices, retail spaces, schools, churches and any other place that people would occupy, said Jason Reynolds, the county’s planning division manager.

Based on his team’s research, Arapahoe County now has the largest occupied structure setback requirements in the state, Reynolds said.

Boulder County generally requires oil and gas facilities to be 2,500 feet from homes and schools, and the statewide setback rule is 2,000 feet, SEE REGULATIONS, P11

with exceptions.

Prior to the approval, the county’s standard setback from occupied structures was 2,000 feet.

Environmental advocates and Arapahoe County residents who live near current and proposed oil and gas facilities advocated for larger setbacks for months.

Recent conversations about oil and gas facility regulations were triggered by a proposed oil and natural gas project called Lowry Ranch.

The proposed project, put forward by an oil and gas company called Civitas Resources, would be at a 33,440-acre site east of Aurora, including areas near the Aurora Reservoir.

In October, the county approved one-mile setbacks from existing and planned reservoirs, unless downgradient conditions can be demonstrated.

After that decision, community members still wanted setbacks from residential and other areas — triggering the commissioners to evaluate the round of regulations they approved this week.

Jared Bynum, an environmental justice advocate for Colorado Rising, said he is cautiously optimistic about the 3,000-foot standard setback.

He added that his group stands with their partner advocates at Save The Aurora Reservoir that have been requesting standard setbacks of one mile from reservoirs, waterways and occupied structures with no exceptions — but the decision to put setbacks at 3,000 feet is a step in the right direction.

“Coming from a county commission that is traditionally a little bit more conservative around these things, we think that’s representative of great progress,” Bynum said.

The new regulations also include specific setback regulations and review processes for facilities near waterways, landfills and more.

Monitoring and testing

In addition to the setback changes, the county’s new rules require operators to generate ground and surface water quality plans.

They also require operators to pay for repeated air quality and noise level testing to ensure compliance with regulations.

“These requirements go beyond

current state regulations set by the Colorado Energy and Carbon Management Commission and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment,” a press release from the county said.

In an incident where fluids move off of a well pad, operators are required to test for soil contamination and develop remediation plans if there is contamination.

Not all supported the new regulations.

“I’ve watched in the industry when, basically, someone comes and tries to regulate too much and too fast and not have the proper context of things — it ends up shutting down a lot of the businesses,” said one public commenter, who used to work with the Bureau of Indian Affairs with oil and gas. “Everybody cares about being safe. Everybody wants to be fair. Nobody’s out to try to hurt anybody. But there is a limit to where regulations step too far.”

District 3 Commissioner Jeff Baker, who voted against the new regulations along with District 5 Commissioner Bill Holen, said he heard from the community that the process was too fast and he was not in favor of rushing it.

“We all agree that the health and safety of our citizens is priority number one — but there are also other things that we’re we have to consider, property rights, legal things,” he said. “Even though I voted against it, I think a lot of the rules that we passed yesterday are going to, one, provide a safe and secure environment to our citizens — and I don’t object to those, per se — I just thought we needed to have more public comment before we approved them.”

County spokesperson Chris Henning said county staff started developing the most recent slate of regulations after the county’s Oct. 10 meeting.

Reynolds said the county wanted to address new regulations quickly so they could be in place when potential new oil and gas applications, which they are expecting any day now, are submitted.

Prior to the Board of County Commissioners’ official decision, the planning commission voted unanimously to deny the proposed regulations at its Nov. 8 meeting.

In early 2024, the county will discuss more oil and gas regulations related to reverse setbacks, inspection programs, refining air quality regulations and more.

Englewood to host tree lighting ceremony

Residents are invited to kick off the holiday season with the annual tree lighting ceremony Dec. 2 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Englewood.

Toni Arnoldy, city events supervisor, said this year’s event will be similar to those in the past with “festive music and activities.”

“There will be performances from the Englewood school’s jazz band and choir. Santa will be there and accepting gift requests. The tree will be lit at 5:30 p.m,” Arnoldy said.

Arnoldy said this year will be traditional but there will be more vendors in the market.

“We are excited to be adding more artists and crafters,” Arnoldy said.

She said Englewood residents love the tree lighting ceremony because it’s a beloved tradition.

“This event has been happening for decades and people love that the community comes together to celebrate the holiday season in an amazing, festive atmosphere,” Arnoldy said.

Going forward, Arnoldy said she hopes the tree lighting tradition will continue to grow and more people will continue to enjoy the celebration.

“We are very excited to be able to continue this tradition for our community. It is amazing to see both the families that have been coming for years and the new families that have recently moved to our community,” Arnoldy said. “This, like every event throughout the year, is about making memories.”

Suspect identified in murder of Centennial man

The Lone Tree Police Department has identified a suspect in the homicide of a 73-year-old Centennial man that happened Nov. 4 in Lone Tree, and authorities are asking the public for help locating the suspect.

The suspect is 23-year-old James Matthew Neal, who was last seen in the Colorado Springs area and is considered armed and dangerous, the police department said in a Nov. 15 news release.

According to images shared by Metro Denver Crime Stoppers, Neal appears to be a white male with a large neck tattoo and several smaller face tattoos.

There is an active warrant for Neal’s arrest for homicide, according to Metro Denver Crime

Stoppers.

If someone sees Neal, they should call 911 first, the organization said.

Anyone with information that could help law enforcement locate Neal should contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at (720) 913-7867 or the Lone Tree Police Department’s tip line at (720) 509-1160.

According to Metro Denver Crime Stoppers, people with information can remain anonymous and potentially earn up to $2,000.

At approximately 12:25 p.m. Nov. 4, law enforcement reportedly found Michael Lohmeier, a 73-year-old Centennial resident, deceased in a car parked in the 8500 block of South Yosemite Street in Lone Tree.

It appeared he died of an apparent gunshot wound, the police department said.

Post-election wrap

know — elections are over and for many of us, we were ready. So — why in the world would I want to rehash any of it? Well — a lot happened throughout our south metro commuFROM THE nities in the 2023 elecEDITOR tion cycle.

Let’s start in Englewood. I’ve stayed quiet about a community where a lot happened and there is a lot to unravel.

First, weeks before the actual regular election, the city had Thelma Grimes to spend more than $130,000 on a recall. A recall that failed. That is a lot of wasted money. Then, to have those same candidates who kept their seats in the recall win in the regular election anyway — maybe the recall group needs to think a little more about the community structure and stability.

To the recall group’s credit — they did get enough signatures to push the recall and that is their right. It just feels irresponsible and costly.

Then — we have the school board in Englewood. We are less than two weeks away from having Davon Williams, who ran unopposed, take the oath of office.

He has a criminal history, he avoided talking to local media to talk about his past, and it appears he has no interest in being transparent with the community about his own issues.

This means he is going to be sitting on a school board and making major policy decisions for our children’s education. He has to do it legally and in front of the public. When he could not even do the decent thing and talk to the press before the election — I am not confident transparency is going to be a priority if he sits on the board.

To Davon Williams — you are going to become a constant distraction that the remaining board members and new superintendent do not deserve.

Our schools and the boards running them are important. You remaining on this board when you can’t even speak publicly is selfish and definitely will not be good for our Englewood students.

Until you get your legal issues and affairs in order — maybe serving in public office should be put on hold.

For the most part, the Littleton and Centennial elections turned out uneventful. Some competition on the school board, but all seems to be generally the same.

Cherry Creek Schools’ incumbents also got reelected. However, I have a message for them too — if making meetings available on video and livestream is not a priority, maybe you are not transparent enough to keep serving.

Not making these meetings electronically available to the public is an outdated way of running an elected board and making big decisions in our school districts. As a parent in your district — I won’t let this issue die and I hope the public becomes a lot more outspoken about it too.

Additionally, Cherry Creek schools are like many other schools throughout the Denver metro area — teachers are losing control because of an inability to discipline. Look at the reports from principals in Denver Public Schools — do we want to go down that road?

I know some teachers we’ve lost because of the discipline issues in our schools. As a parent in the district — I will keep watch of this issue as well.

Finally, we head farther south to Douglas County. I am not going to lie — I was surprised by the school board’s results. To have the slate led by incumbent Susan Meek win was interesting.

As I have said in this column space many times — I am never a fan of elected boards that are comprised of buddies who vote the same way every time.

A yes-man board is not going to ensure that the best policies are in place.

Having Brad Geiger, Valerie Thompson and Susan Meek on this board will continue to create balanced discussions that are needed in every aspect of our government.

On a side note, when I worked with the League of Women Voters to host a forum this year — I was impressed with Valerie Thompson. Her knowledge, answers, and the way she carried herself had me thinking I’d love to have her in Cherry Creek.

Finally, the bond measures in Douglas County. I am glad to see the measure to pay teachers more passed. They deserve it.

Gratitude that transcends Thanksgiving

s the leaves turn and November arrives, gratitude gets its time in the spotlight. Thanksgiving reminds us to pause and give thanks for the blessings in our life. But true gratitude is more than a holiday ritual or fleeting feeling — it’s WINNING a daily mindset we can cultivate all year WORDS long.

Gratitude in the moment is powerful, but even more transformational is developing a lifestyle of gratitude. When we intentionally practice gratitude daily, it reshapes our perspective. Instead of focusing on lacks, we start noticing the gifts that surround us — a warm bed, health, friends who listen. Our minds default from dissatisfaction to appreciation.

Life can sometimes feel like a heavy Michael Norton burden. Challenges loom large while blessings fade into the background. We get caught in a cycle of complaint and forget to appreciate what we have.

An attitude of gratitude lifts us out of this negative mindset. When we intentionally cultivate gratitude daily, our whole perspective shifts.

Gratitude starts as a mindset — a lens for viewing life.

Even strangers sense our joy and light. Gratitude is contagious.

Gratitude connects us to something larger than ourselves. It is an antidote to entitlement, pride, and selfishness. Gratitude reminds us that all good things are gifts we could not earn or create alone. It grounds us in humility.

Practicing gratitude daily trains our brain to focus on the positive. Over time, we become less prone to anxiety and depression.

Choosing grateful thoughts over resentful ones makes relationships, work, and everyday stresses more enjoyable. We stop taking the good things for granted.

Beyond a mindset, gratitude must become an action. Keeping a gratitude journal where we record a few things we’re thankful for each day etches gratitude deeper.

Speaking our thanks aloud to others reinforces the habit. When gratitude permeates our mind, words, and deeds, its transformative power grows.

Living out our life’s passion and purpose gratefully brings us joy, but even more, it is an act of faith.

It reminds us we are not alone and that a loving God is looking out for us. Gratitude acknowledges all we’ve been given, every breath, every meal, every embrace. An attitude of gratitude keeps us mindful of the blessings that surround

us. And when we appreciate those blessings, it is easier to go out and be a blessing to others.

There is always something to be grateful for if we intentionally look for it. Gratitude shifts our focus from lack to abundance. It allows us to approach each day with optimism and hope. We become a force of light in a world that needs more joy.

This Thanksgiving, take time to reflect on reasons to be grateful.

But even more importantly, commit to making gratitude a daily habit. Let it color your perspective, words and actions. Gratitude’s benefits compound when nurtured consistently. It can guide us to greater joy and purpose every day of the year.

Glenn Robert Combellick May 8, 1924 - November 5, 2023

On a gorgeous morning on November 5, 2023, Glenn Robert Combellick of Littleton, Colorado passed away peacefully in his sleep within minutes of the spectacular orange, red and yellow sunrise that painted the sky. It was All Saints Day. Glenn was born in Billings, Montana on May 8, 1924, to parents Lester Ray and Bessie Combellick. He spent his childhood skating on frozen ponds, fly fishing, and winning marble championships. As a young man, he also served his country in the Navy during World War II. Glenn had been in memory care at Brookdale Meridian in Englewood, the city that was his professional home for many years. He co-founded his own CPA firm, Combellick, O’Conner & Reynolds, which occupied the tall building that is now Wells Fargo Bank. Glenn was a pillar of his community, dedicated to serving the needs of others through the Arapahoe Sertoma Club (Service to Mankind) and the Englewood Chamber of Commerce, and he was appointed president of both organizations.

In 1963, Glenn oversaw and helped to build the family’s home in Littleton on two beautiful acres of prairie land. It had

a sweeping view of the front range, where he and his wife, Vernie, raised their family and lived for 56 years.

They celebrated their 75th anniversary on August 29, 2023, he at 99 years of age and Vernie at 98. Glenn also loved animals, starting with his childhood dalmatian, Pepper. Over six decades, the Combellicks welcomed six dogs, nine horses, and a beloved stray cat, Moses, into their household. The family’s beagle, Macee, was his constant companion and most treasured pet. Traveling was especially significant in Glenn’s life. He and his family trailered through most of North America, and later, he and Vernie visited every continent on the globe.

Glenn will be remembered for his jovial nature (a people-lover and the life of the party), honesty, integrity, and love of flying, fishing, golfing, dancing, and HAM radio.

He is survived by his wife, Vernie; four children, Rod, Janet, Sally, and Linda; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He will be sorely missed. Donations may be given in his memory to the Arapahoe Sertoma Club.

Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 27th. Details will be provided at drinkwinemortuary.com.

Wreaths Across America offers a way to thank veterans for their service after they’re gone

n December, Arvada resident Judy Teter will make the trip to the southwest end of Denver, where she ensures that wreaths will be laid to honor the service of thousands of veterans at a military cemetery.

“It’s not just about laying the wreath — it’s about honoring our veterans and what they did for us,” Teter said. “There’s a proper way to lay the wreath on the headstone, and you’re also supposed to say the veteran’s name and thank them for their service.

“Because a lot of the people that are buried out there don’t have family that comes out and visits them, so we’re honoring them,” Teter continued.

Nearly 100 cemetery locations in Colorado will take part in a national event that pays respect to interred veterans with balsam wreaths. Volunteers like Teter across the state work to support national nonprofit Wreaths Across America ahead of National Wreaths Across America Day, occurring this year on Dec. 16, according to a news release.

Teter volunteers as a coordinator for the effort to place thousands of wreaths at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, near U.S. Highway 285 and Sheridan Boulevard.

Roughly 123,000 veteran graves lie at Fort Logan, according to Wreaths Across America’s website. Teter says her team’s goal is to place 20,000 wreaths there on the day of the ceremony.

She works “with the cemetery administration as to what sections they want covered because we do not have enough wreaths that are sponsored to cover the whole cemetery,” Teter said.

“But I have a goal to hopefully one day get all of Fort Logan covered,” Teter said.

A few years ago, she found out about volunteering to place flags near headstones on Memorial Day. Through that effort, she also heard about putting out the wreaths near Christmastime, and she jumped aboard.

“We wouldn’t be the United States of America with the freedoms that we have if it wasn’t for our servicemen and women,” Teter said.

Supporting other families in remembering their loved ones who served is part of her team’s role.

On the day of the wreath ceremony, a part of the schedule is set aside for family members who ordered a wreath for their loved one’s specific grave.

“That starts at 1 p.m., so it’s a little more quiet for the families to remember, talk to their family member, whatever traditions they have,” Teter said. “Last year, there was a family who had a picnic lunch at their family member’s headstone.”

Looking for help

Teter and her volunteer team work hard behind the scenes to make sure Wreaths Across America Day is a success at Fort Logan.

But she’s looking for more volunteers and trying to drum up more fundraising support to pay for more wreaths and help cover the costs of the operation.

She’s seeking support from businesses who may want to pitch in, too.

“From what I understand, that has been a challenge for a lot of the coordinators, is trying to get companies that can donate X amount of (money) to sponsor X amount of wreaths,” Teter said.

She’s also looking for a volunteer with fundraising experience in particular.

“Or somebody who says, ‘Hey, I know how to (work) a forklift,’ or somebody who says, ‘I own a business or (I can provide) a forklift or pallet jack,’” Teter said.

Wreaths Across America is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so donating to it is considered tax deductible, according to Teter.

Wreaths Across America was founded to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia that began in 1992, according to a news release.

The organization’s mission is carried out in part each year by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies in December at Arlington and thousands of veterans’ cemeteries and other locations in all 50 states and beyond, the release said.

Local sponsorship groups registered through the national program are helping to raise the necessary sponsorships to honor service members laid to rest in participating locations.

Since its founding in 2007, Wreaths Across America has partnered with thousands of local nonprofits and civic groups, according to the release.

For those looking to donate, the nonprofit seeks $17 per wreath, Teter said.

But the money goes a long way.

Through the nonprofit’s “PayBack” program, sponsorship groups can earn $5 for every $17 veteran’s wreath sponsored to sup-

port these programs in their communities.

By making a $17 sponsorship, “you are also contributing to vital programs that make a meaningful difference in the lives of veterans and their families throughout the year,” the news release stated.

Some of the nonprofit’s free, year-round programs, according to the release, include: • The Mobile Education Exhibit that travels the country, visiting schools and communities, teaching “the value of our freedom” while acting as an official welcome home center for living Vietnam veterans.

• Wreaths Across America Radio, which gives voice to volunteers and service members so that you can hear their stories “of courage and inspiration.”

• The Wreaths Across America National Museum, which is free and open to the public. It “highlights the bravery and service of rank-and-file veterans.”

• The Remembrance Tree Program, which creates a living memorial of service members giving back to other service members.

Or you can pick it up at Fort Logan at 1 p.m. Dec. 16, she said.

“For people who are out of state who order them, we have a volunteer who will place them and send a picture (of the placement) to the family member,” Teter said.

A year after her exit from corporate America, Kelly Crossley has taken a leap and launched a store in Highlands Ranch full of pieces she loves.

Modern Vintage Marketplace, which opened on Nov. 1, carries home decor, collectibles, men’s and women’s clothing, and hundreds of other items that have caught the first-time business owner’s admiring eye.

“Each piece is uniquely picked by mostly me,” said Crossley, who previously worked in information technology and employee engagement.

Some products are selected by Wil Crossley, her husband and partner in the new endeavor.

Long before she started her adventure in retail, Crossley said she had curated a collection of items from her own life that were beautiful or

well-made or held special meaning.

A fan of vintage glassware and handbags, she enjoys searching estate sales, thrift stores and the internet for pieces. She has an appreciation for things that were made “back in the day” and has learned that others do, too.

This realization led her to start buying and reselling unique and vintage goods on digital forums like Mercari and Poshmark. But shipping glass was a “nightmare” and eventually she decided she wanted a brick-and-mortar store.

CJRO Shines a Light on Seasonal Classics

The Colorado Jazz Repertory Orchestra knows how to do the holidays right, and they’re going to prove it with their Holiday Hits from Stage and Screen concert, held at the PACE Center, 20000 Pikes Peak Ave. in Parker, at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2.

The performance will feature vocalists Robert Johnson and Marion Powers adding their own stamp to holiday standards like “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and “Christmas Time is Here,” all of which debuted on the stage, film or television. It’s a perfect concert for the entire family, especially with the flourishes the CJRO Big Band, led by artistic director Drew Zaremba, add to everything they play.

Duane Tucker, president of the Englewood Schools Board of Education, said the qualifications for school board candidates are “established by Colorado Revised Statutes Section 2231-107.”

“Candidates are required to file an Affidavit of School Director Candidate on Qualifications for Office with the Designated Election Official (DEO),” Tucker said. “The DEO is allowed to rely on the Affidavit and the candidate’s certifications therein without further investigation.”

According to the Englewood school board candidate site, those qualifications include: “Be a registered voter in the school district for at least 12 consecutive months before the election; not have been convicted of committing a sexual offense against a child; and because school director elections are nonpartisan, candidates may not campaign as members of a political party.”

Polzin said Board Policy KI, which references the procedure for visits from school board members, recently underwent some language changes, which the board approved on Nov. 8.

Polzin said the board “will have a second reading under consensus

items on Dec. 5.”

The language changes added that “all requests for visits by board members must be coordinated through the superintendent.”

“Board members have always been expected to coordinate school visits through the superintendent; this was the practice of the previous superintendent as well,” Polzin said. “This is the recommended practice by Colorado Association of School Boards (CASB) in their Leadership Workbook for board members.”

Polzin said during the school day she is with board members when they visit any campus.

Before they enter a school building, Polzin said school board members are expected to ring the doorbell and be “buzzed” into the office like any visitor.

“They have to present their driver’s license, then the license is run through a system we use called Raptor, and they must wear the sticker name badge that Raptor produces while in our school,” Polzin said. “This is the same practice for any visitor, parent or guardian who comes into the school. We also ask the board members to wear their gold name tag that indicates they are a board member.”

Williams and fellow director-elect Katie Wilberding Cross are scheduled to have their photos taken and be sworn in at the board’s next meeting on Dec. 5.

ground leveling, a walkway and signage — in early December.

“I think that there’s a lot of people that are interested in this kind of thing, and we hope to see them here,” Reester said. “From an economic standpoint … more tourism will give a boost to our community, and those are all really good things.

It’ll be an ongoing draw, I think.”

The exhibit site will be accessible from the Mary Carter Greenway Trail and Little’s Creek Trail and there will be no public parking on site, Reester said.

There will be wayfinding signs to guide visitors from downtown Littleton and the Littleton Downtown RTD station, which are about half a mile away.

Why Littleton?

The display will be one of only three of its kind in the country.

One Falcon 9 rocket booster sits outside of the SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California, while another is at Space Center Houston in Texas.

Reester said part of the reason the exhibit makes sense in Littleton is because of the city’s connection with the aerospace industry.

“We have a long aerospace history and DISH happens to be one of the leaders in aerospace in Littleton now,” he said.

Aerospace company Lockheed Martin has had a large presence in the Littleton area for decades.

At a July city council meeting, Cantey Ergen, co-founder of DISH Network, said the booster should be on display in Littleton because of the city’s connection to the aerospace industry.

“We all talk about STEM education,” Ergen said. “We all want to excite kids and families and learners to understand technology that our country leads in right now, and we think that for DISH to have the opportunity to do this in partnership with the city of Littleton and the foundation … is something that would be beneficial to the city of Littleton.”

But the company’s relationship to SpaceX is a little bit more complicated, with a history of legal disputes

between the companies.

In January, DISH sued SpaceX to try to stop its satellite internet service, Starlink, from launching its next-generation satellite network.

In May, SpaceX won a spectrum dispute with DISH regarding access to the 12GHz spectrum.

But according to Ergen, the companies also work together.

At the July meeting, she said DISH has launched satellites on SpaceX boosters six times.

DISH Network did not respond to recent requests for comment for this story.

DISH’s recent finances

In early November, DISH announced that it will be laying off about 500 Colorado employees in

the coming months.

It also reported its third-quarter 2023 finances, which showed revenue totaling $3.70 billion, down from $4.10 billion for the corresponding period in 2022. It reported losing $139 million in the quarter and Forbes reported its shares fell to a 25-year low.

When asked what would happen to the booster if DISH is financially no longer able to maintain it, Reester said the agreement between the city and DISH holds the company responsible.

“This is like a lot of public installations, whether it be art or otherwise,” Reester said. “We felt from the beginning that it was critical for DISH to have maintenance in perpetuity, so our attorneys made sure that that was reflected in the agreement, so that the city didn’t end up with an unexpected future cost that we weren’t planning for.”

Reester said DISH was on board with this agreement from the beginning.

He said that in the case of an acquisition, any potential successor companies would be responsible for the booster.

DISH Network has not responded to recent requests for comment for this story.

Online posts show community members have expressed mixed reviews about the booster so far. Some are excited about the opportunity to see the object up close, while others have deemed it ugly and out-ofplace near the natural trails.

There has been a detour in place on Little’s Creek Trail and the Mary Carter Greenway near the exhibit for over two months, Reester said, and the trails will reopen when construction is complete.

with returning it. So I’m hoping that is a more attractive way to go.”

Although about 75% of Modern Vintage Marketplace’s 2,000-pluspiece inventory has been previously owned, the Crossleys are reluctant to use words like used or thrift or resale. Instead, they use the term “rescued” to describe their not-new merchandise. It’s a nod to the idea that they’ve saved quality products from a sorry fate languishing unappreciated at a charity shop or, worse, in a landfill.

Crossley said she put the 1,400-square-foot store together with shoppers in mind. She wanted the fitting room spacious and the restroom fun. (It’s tiki themed.) She picked a name for the place that hints at what kind of items customers would find inside. Songs from decades past play over the speakers and set a nostalgic mood. A set of lockers near the back allow customers to set aside pieces they’re interested in while trying on clothes.

There’s even a pair of upholstered chairs where one can linger with a hot beverage.

“I want you to feel comfortable and enjoy yourself — not just be running in and then running out,” Crossley said. “Hang out for a while.”

Whether it’s the colorful, mismatched letters spelling out the store name on the wall or the second-hand butcher blocks that make up the checkout counter or the cedar fence pickets Wil repurposed for baseboards, the Crossleys succeeding in generating the “it’s all good”

“It’s just us and our savings,” Wil Crossley said, “so we were scrimping and saving and using reused things whenever we could.”

While Kelly Crossley is happy to be out of the corporate world and working for herself, she’s noticed she’s using lot of the skills she developed in her former career to get her fledgling shop off the ground: reading contracts, negotiating prices, managing relationships with vendors and customers. This difference is now she’s doing it to benefit her own business instead of someone else’s.

“I tell people, it’s scary and exciting all at the same time,” she said.

has been incredible to see how his students over the years have gotten creative in thinking about art from a standpoint that’s not solely based on sight.

“Students have started to incorporate, I think, more variations on sensory experience,” he said. “Students have been trying to incorporate even more senses – thinking about smell, thinking about sound, about movement.”

One piece of artwork features small pillows with poetry printed on one side. On the other side, the poems are embroidered in braille – and when squeezed, the pillows play a recording of the poem in the artist’s voice.

Another piece consisted of strips of paper hanging from the wall for visitors to rip wherever they wanted, creating a seemingly random collection of hanging colors and textures.

Chris Parsons, a staff member in the center’s senior program, brought a group of seniors to visit the exhibit a few days after its opening. She said it is a fantastic opportunity for blind people to experience art in a gallery.

“As a blind person, if you can even get up close enough to something because there’s not ropes, you still can’t touch it” in a museum, she said. “There’s glass, or the person who’s with you tells you it says, ‘Don’t touch.’”

Several of the seniors lost their vision later in life, so Parsons said visiting museums is something many of them miss.

“For them, it really is a way for them to be able to get back to something that they may have really enjoyed doing,” she said of the exhibit. “And they thought it was something that there was really no hope for them of being able to really experience that anymore.”

Broomfield resident Susie Zimmer, who is blind, traveled to Littleton to see the exhibit with her friend, Judy Murphy. She said she was very happy they made the trip.

“I like the different textiles,” she said, adding that her favorite piece of art was a butterfly made from different textured fabrics.

Murphy said she enjoyed the messages that came through the artwork, and that through touching the art, people can glean deep meanings.

In order to make the artwork as accessible as possible, each piece has a small label explaining the artist’s inspiration, both in written English and in braille.

In addition to the creativity it inspires in his students, Abels said another goal of the show is to help students at Arapahoe Community College and the Colorado Center for the Blind connect with each other.

“It’s connecting with our community,” he said. “(The center) is pretty much right across the street. So we’re getting to know them and connect with our neighbors.”

The exhibit is located in the Colorado Gallery of the Arts on Arapahoe Community College’s Littleton Campus.

It is free and open to the public Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The gallery will be closed Nov. 20 through Nov. 26 for Thanksgiving break.
