The traveling Venardos Circus made its second stop in Littleton in less than a year with a sold-out show on April 14 that stunned audiences with acrobatic flair, daring stunts and boisterous energy.

One of the major highway interchanges in the south Denver metro area is set to undergo construction, starting in the coming months, in a project that hopes to better accommodate traffic on two of Englewood’s largest roads.

During the construction to replace the aging South Broadway bridge over U.S. Highway 285, traffic on Broadway could be reduced to one lane in each direction, according to the City of Englewood’s online updates on the project.

The project will ultimately add a third lane in both directions under Broadway on Highway 285.

In Englewood, that road is synonymous with Hampden Avenue in some parts and with Jefferson Avenue where the highway dips to the south.

Construction is expected to begin in spring or summer 2022 and last to the end of 2023, according to the city’s website. The project’s design phase started in December 2020 and lasted into early 2022, the website says.

The Broadway bridge was completed in 1955, and the ramps were completed in 1970, according to Jake Warren, the project manager for Englewood.

The Englewood Victim Assistance Program offers crisis intervention to victims of crime or traumatic events. Recently, American Furniture Warehouse donated new furniture, décor and more to make the victim advocacy room welcoming and comforting. AFW donated everything in the room including the sofa, chairs, side tables, lamp, rug and all the accents like the mirror, wall pictures and the plants.

In the social media post, the department said, “The Englewood Police Department and Victim Assistance Program cannot express how grateful we are to AFW and Jessica (with AFW). The victims that have already used the space say it is a beautiful, it reminds them of home, and they don’t want to leave. Two Coloradans just returned from providing aid in Ukraine It’s not a matter of if they’ll go back again, but when

Now that Overchuk understands medical supplies, vehicles and infrared technology are among the most-needed items, he and his friends will raise the money to purchase those items, through their new fundraising organization, Ukraine Aid Fund.

Although his nerves were tested throughout the trip, Overchuk said, traveling back home has helped him face reality, which he could not do from Colorado.

“When you are outside, you want reality to be different, and you have this internal conflict of what should be and what is reality,” he said. “But when you are there, reality sinks in and you realize you can do something to help, but you can’t fix it on your own. That helps a little bit, to just find yourself, and do your part.”

Entering Ukraine When Mares landed in Ukraine, he planned to meet colleagues from Kosovo in Krakow, Poland, to begin the aid effort. But when the group headed to the nearest border crossing, they were met by Ukrainian border patrol guards who would

Mares went on to conduct aid tasks in Ukraine as planned, while his colleagues from Kosovo helped women and children as they crossed from Poland.

While there, Mares found an animal clinic providing vaccinations and medications to abandoned animals. A worker at the clinic led him to a volunteer organization

where a woman there explained that refugees often take their small dogs with them when they flee but many larger dogs are left behind.

“A lot of dogs are being left behind in the Lviv area, and are just running around, without food or shelter,” Mares said. “This lady is trying to gather as many of those (animals) as possible, and putting them in foster homes, hoping someday to reunite them with their owners.”

Mares’ translator, who studied at University of Kharkiv, in the second-largest city in Ukraine and one of the hardest hit areas since the war began, said many students have been stranded there since the war began. Before he returned to the U.S., Mares distributed $2,000 to students there.

By the end of his trip, Mares said he and his colleagues had helped more than 20 families in Poland and Ukraine.

‘People started ignoring sirens’ It took more than 12 hours for

Overchuk to get across the PolandUkraine border. As he entered his native country, thousands of people were standing in line hoping to exit as it began snowing.

“That feeling was striking to me because there were mostly women and children, and it was pretty cold and the amount of people I saw, I assumed it was a couple of days they were standing there — because the ability of the border patrol to get people through was limited and the amount of people wanting to get out was more than they could actually get through,” he said.

When Overchuk finally reached Lviv, it was hard to find restaurants serving food. Many of the larger restaurants, such as McDonald’s, had closed and moved their operations to the border to help feed refugees. But there were times that the city looked more or less normal, he said. Trams were working and people occasionally walked the streets.

When he reached Kyiv, on the way to visit relatives, the streets were mostly empty. “The concerning thing is that people started ignoring sirens because they were just tired of hiding,” he said. “And it was concerning because it may result in more casualties. After a strike hits a building, some people may be outside, rather than hiding somewhere. Since the sirens are almost constant, people got fatigued, and started ignoring it.”

At checkpoints on his way to visit family members, military members seemed skeptical of Overchuk, often checking his car and asking why he was driving on back roads in a war zone. A few times, Overchuk called relatives, who backed up his story to help

him get through to visit them.

Most of Overchuk’s family members are still in Ukraine, and have not left because they fear their husbands and fathers would be drafted into the war, if they tried to escape.

When he finally saw some of his cousins in Ukraine, Overchuk said he felt he had accomplished something major, just by being present.

“It was helpful for me, and for them, to feel more connected and supported,” he said. “Not a lot of people are entering Ukraine. More people are leaving than entering, and having some courage to go there inspires some of the people inside. I hope I brought some courage with me to them as well.”

While in Ukraine, Overchuk’s family in Colorado was worried about him being in a war zone, which — at times — made him want to leave. But when he’s in

Colorado, he worries about his family in Ukraine.

“One way or another, there is no good place to be,” he said. Overchuk said he wishes there were stronger policies in place to help Ukrainian refugees immigrate to the U.S. faster. In late March, the Biden administration announced it would accept up to 100,000 refugees from Ukraine.

As the war drags on, Overchuk said he hopes people around the world will donate to the Ukrainian military and aid organizations helping people there. In Mariupol alone, a southeastern city decimated by the war, it will take years and untold sums of money to rebuild, Overchuk said.

Amid the devastation and uncertainty, the Ukrainian government is encouraging people who can work, to resume their professional duties to help stimulate the struggling economy. Construction

workers aren’t yet focused on rebuilding but they’re conducting clean-up efforts across the country, Overchuk said. Small restaurants and cafes in some parts of Ukraine are reopening to provide a sense of normalcy for residents.

“It’s definitely helping,” he said.

Overchuk said, though he’s exhausted and doesn’t sleep much, contributing to humanitarian efforts from afar has helped him cope.

“You just see the ways you can influence and help as much as you can,” he said. “But it’s still hard.”

COVID vaccine clinic closed by state Waste, incorrect dosage part of claims

A health care provider based in Centennial was suspended from providing COVID-19 vaccinations after the state public health department found “multiple occurrences of storage and handling issues” and discovered that the facility was charging some patients a fee, according to the department.

Compliance staff with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment identified unaccounted-for doses due to “missing and/or inaccurate documentation,” along with “significant vaccine wastage, which is often a sign of poor inventory management,” said a statement from the Colorado State Joint Information Center, which takes questions for the health department.

The main violations at Health Now Family Practice were the providing of vaccine doses outside of recommended storage conditions, past a vial’s puncture shelf life of 12 hours or past a beyond-use date, the statement to Colorado Community Media said.

The facility had also inadvertently given certain types of vaccine doses to people in the wrong age groups, the joint information center said.

“Upon inspection, Health Now Medical’s records showed two instances of vaccines inadvertently given to inappropriate ages: one 12 year old patient received the Pfizer vaccine formulated for 5-11 year olds, and one 5 year old received the Pfizer vaccine formulated for persons 12 and older,” the statement said.

The health department also discovered the facility was charging some patients a fee for COVID-19 vaccination, the statement said.

“Collecting an administration fee from patients for COVID-19 vaccine is a violation of the CDC COVID-19 Provider agreement and federal COVID-19 vaccine billing requirements,” the statement said.

“Health Now Family Practice was also billing health plans, which is allowable under the CDC provider agreement.”

The health department “has

reported these violations of federal billing requirements to the Division of Homeland Security, Office of Inspector General, and Health Now Family Practice may face additional disciplinary actions as a result of their investigation,” the statement added.

Some should be revaccinated, state says A website for Health Now Family Practice lists an address of 9137 E. Mineral Circle in Centennial. A news release from the health department identified the business as Health Now Medical LLC, operating as Health Now Family Practice.

Due to the storage and handling issues, roughly 68 Pfizer COVID vaccine doses administered at Health Now Family Practice were considered invalid, and the patients that received them need to be revaccinated, according to another news release.

Asked how many people were vaccinated with those doses, the information center said 48 total patients should be revaccinated.

According to an April 12 news release, Health Now Family Practice was to contact affected patients directly with the following information about revaccination: • Patients who received one invalid dose at Health Now Family Practice should be revaccinated with one valid dose. They should receive their repeat dose from another COVID vaccine provider as soon as possible.

• Patients who received two invalid doses at Health Now Family Practice should repeat both doses. They should receive their first repeat dose from another COVID vaccine provider as soon as possible.

• For some patients, it may be best to wait eight weeks after the invalid dose before getting revaccinated.

Boys and men aged 12 to 39 may be at higher risk of a rare side effect called myocarditis if they get revaccinated before eight weeks have passed.

Talking with a health care provider can help people learn more about their “individual risk factors” and whether it’s best to wait before getting revaccinated, the release said.

Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle. A recent study found that “the risk for cardiac complications was significantly higher after (COVID-19) infection than after

mRNA COVID-19 vaccination for both males and females in all age groups.”

The study looked at cases including myocarditis and another condition called pericarditis.

“The severity of cases of myocarditis and pericarditis can vary.

For the cases reported after mRNA COVID-19 vaccination, most who presented to medical care have responded well to medications and rest and felt better quickly,” the information center’s statement said.

State oversight role The state suspended Health Now Family Practice from participation in the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s COVID-19 Vaccination Program, an April 8 news release said.

The health department suspended the facility for not meeting the standards required by the CDC and the federal Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, for “safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine administration,” the health department said in a

news release.

That means Health Now Family Practice may not order or administer COVID vaccines as long as the facility is under suspension. The suspension also prevents it from receiving COVID vaccines from another enrolled vaccine provider, according to the information center.

Health care providers may be reinstated into the COVID vaccination program if they address all compliance issues identified during site visits. Reinstatement into the COVID vaccination program is not guaranteed and “is at the discretion” of the health department, according to the information center.

Health Now Family Practice is an independent private practice with one clinic location, according to the information center.

The health department’s staff conduct oversight on health care providers. To be approved for enrollment as a new COVID vaccine provider, a “virtual enrollment site visit” must be completed, and the health care provider must submit certain documentation, according to the information center.

The health department “also conducts compliance site visits, informal observations, or investigations, in conjunction with local public health agencies periodically and as necessary,” the information center said in the statement.

The health department also suspended Pueblo-based VitalPoint Urgent Care from the COVID vaccination program, effective Nov. 19, according to a news release at the time.

Tavern owners double down Max Taps opens second location in Centennial

The original location of Max Taps Co. survived 2020, a feat that shaped founder Dave Gardner’s outlook on opening a second taproom.

“If we can make it through that, with nobody allowed in a bar, it seems like we should be able to pull this off,” Gardner said of the company’s expansion to Centennial.

The new location, near the intersection of East Arapahoe Road and South Lima Street, opened in February and has 63 Colorado beers and four Colorado wines on tap. Customers can catch a game while seated at the 31-foot-long bar or watch dusk fall over Pikes Peak, Longs Peak and everything in between from the spacious, dog-friendly patio that hugs the building.

A fan of variety, Gardner said the cuisine offered outside his tap houses is always changing. A different food truck is available almost every night of the week. Tacos one evening, pierogies the next. Then gyros, schnitzel, sliders …

“If you were to come multiple times, you’d have a different experience,” Gardner said. “You get some barbecue with a nice pilsner or pizza with an IPA and it’s completely different.”

well. When one beer runs out, it’s replaced with a similar-style beer from a different brewery.

“We have roughly the same amount of styles on tap, but we always switch it up,” Gardner said.

Gardner and his wife Shelly opened Max Taps’ first location in Highlands Ranch — where they live — in 2017.

Gardner said he truly appreciates the community. Its support sustained the business during the “terrifying” closure of dine-in restaurants and bars at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.

“We just love this industry so much, and we’ve had such a good experience at the other location (in Highlands Ranch),” he said.

But to his surprise, opening their second location was just as hard as opening the original, Gardner said.

He knew how to steer clear of the problems he encountered the first time around, but every situation comes with its own set of challenges.

For example, cold, snowy, don’twant-to-leave-the-house weather hit the Front Range each of the first six weekends following the Centennial location’s opening. It put a damper on business.

But like getting married, having a child, or buying a house, Gardner said there’s no perfect time to expand.

“If the right opportunity presents itself, then you should take it,” he said. “... If it’s something you want, there’s only one way to make it hap-

pen.”

The space in Centennial — already outfitted with a cooler, bar and gorgeous views — was too good to pass up, Gardner said.

Fortunately, the days are getting longer and warmer.

“Once it’s sunny and nice out, people just absolutely love the patio,” Gardner said.

With spring inching toward summer, Gardner’s working to make outdoor time even more enjoyable for his customers. Starting in May, Max Taps Centennial will feature live music on Fridays and Saturdays.

“When the weather’s really nice and I see people starting to sit on that patio, it makes me really happy that we decided to do this.”

about 50 years,” Warren told Colorado Community Media last year.

“Modern bridges are designed with an anticipated service life of 75 years.”

The project gives the city an opportunity to improve other elements on the Broadway bridge, according to the website.

Those improvements may include wider sidewalks, a “buffer” zone between pedestrians and traffic, “improved aesthetics,” and narrower lanes promoting safer driving as traffic enters the pedestrian-dense downtown Englewood area, the website says.

The new bridge could include the updated Englewood logo on four large, decorative columns at the corners, the website adds.

Upon receiving some remaining approvals from the Colorado Department of Transportation, or CDOT, the project was to go to the Federal Highway Administration for approval, according to a March 31 update from the city.

Here’s more information on the project and what it could change.

Traffic shifts During construction, when traffic may be reduced on Broadway to one lane in each direction, the new lane pattern could eliminate the southbound-to-eastbound left turn and set up a detour for the eliminated movement, according to the city’s updates.

may occur nearby. To eliminate weaving and provide a “safe zone” for traffic merging onto eastbound Highway 285, access to Highway 285 from Sherman Street to the south would be fully removed, the website says.

of Highway 285 may become fully closed, or a right turn off westbound Highway 285 onto Sherman could be included, Warren said last year.

For cyclists and pedestrians, that would mean the traffic light and street crossing at Sherman Street would be removed. Cyclists and pedestrians would be rerouted a short distance east to the Little Dry Creek Trail.

Handling water The National Environmental Policy Act, or NEPA, established the requirements and processes federal agencies must consider regarding the environmental effects of Federal Highway Administration proposals and actions, according to an overview from that federal agency online.

For recipients of federal funds, that means that before proceeding with final design and construction, a project must first disclose any environmental consequences and evaluate alternatives that would avoid or lessen the project’s impacts, according to the overview.

The environmental resources that were to be considered or evaluated as part of the NEPA approval process for the Englewood project included air quality, noise, and permanent water quality, among others, according to Warren.

“Given that we’ll have additional surface area from the extra lanes on 285, we’ll include stormwater detention, such that there isn’t an increase from historic flows being sent directly into Little Dry Creek,” Warren said last year.

The proposed water quality mitigation measures — which will likely include both hydrodynamic separators and rain gardens — will help remove pollutants and improve the quality of stormwater runoff discharged into Little Dry Creek, a February update from the city said.

The city contracted with the engineering firm ATKINS North America, referred to as “the consultant,” to perform environmental investigations regarding the project and to develop plans and specifications for construction, the city’s website says.

Small grass fires burned in two areas of Littleton Cause of fires is undetermined

Two small grass fires burned at Ketring Park in Littleton the night of April 11. After the flames were extinguished around 8:30 p.m., another fire was reported about three miles away at Reynolds Landing shortly before midnight, according to South Metro Fire Rescue spokesperson Eric Hurst.

At least three calls were made to 911, the first at 8:21 p.m., about the fire at Ketring, Hurst said, with a call to police made at 11:49 p.m. regarding the Reynolds fire. The fires, which Hurst said were slow moving, were all extinguished within minutes. The fires were about 10 feet by 10 feet, Hurst said.

No injuries were reported, and no structures were threatened, Hurst said.

South Metro did not post any information about the fires on social media or release any statements.

we don’t make social media posts about them unless they’re widely visible or have a long duration to extinguish,” Hurst said. “Of course, any fire always feels too close to home for any of us.”

The cause of the fires is undetermined, Hurst said, adding that no evidence or

suspects were identified at the scene. But he said it’s a “safe assumption that all of these fires have been human caused” either by careless behavior or an unintentional accident.

was believed to have been caused by a small firework, Hurst said, and left neighbors rattled.

“Incidents like this are getting a little bit more frequent than they used to,” Hurst said. “Some of it’s just careless behavior ... and not an intentional act.”

hile we have had some roadblocks in enjoying the spring season with wind and some storms – I have to say I love this season in Colorado.

It’s the time of year to start planning gardens. Seedlings for the vegetable garden are just about ready to be transFROM THE planted from the greenlights inside to the raised beds in EDITOR the yard.

Our Douglas County reporter, Elliott Wenzler, got us a little more in the spirit of spring this week with her story and photos on Sterling Ranch being more than just a housing development.

Besides flowers, vegetable gardens and baby animals — I love this time of year in Colorado because of all the outdoor activities throughout the area. Living by Cherry Creek State Park, kayaking in the lake is a big favorite activity starting in springtime and going into the hot summer months.

Last weekend, I took a ride to check out the area and see if the winds would hold up for a first voyage out this spring. As I drove around the park, it was a little unnerving.

All the talk in the region right now is fires.

The fact is, there is no beginning and end to “fire season” now — it is a year-round concern for residents and fire officials.

While I love spring, as I drove around the area, a part of me hoped that we can get more rain and snow. It is not a secret that we need more moisture in the ground.

Living near Cherry Creek State Park, we looked at all the brush, all the trees in the area and we started thinking about what it would mean if a fire were to spark up. A fire can spark from an overheated car, an irresponsible person throwing out a cigarette butt, or some freak incident.

Living near this big, open area has me concerned like many residents this year as news of wildfires throughout the state has already started making the rounds. Glenwood Canyon was most recently on fire.

In Littleton, police and citizens are dealing with fires being set at night in local parks.

As we enjoy the spring this year, we as residents have to be just as vigilant this year as we have ever been before. In order to keep loving the outdoor activities this region and state has to offer, we as citizens have just as much responsibility to help protect it as the firefighters and public safety officials we rely on to keep us safe this year.

As a final note, now more than ever, do not take for granted the training and work local firefighters are doing day in and day out to be prepared in case the call comes in for another wildfire in the aera.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Reach out to vote in South Suburban Yesterday I attended the League of Women Voters forum for the candidates for the South Suburban Parks and Recreation District. The candidates are running for one of three openings on the Board and will be elected on May 3. The winning candidates will likely be elected by less than 2,000 people out of the more than 155,000 people living in the district. The board manages more than $50 million of taxpayer money each year and are elected by less than 2% of the people living in the district. Is this what democracy looks like?

One of the questions posed to the candidates was about mailing ballots to all registered voters in the district. The incumbents responded that

the cost to mail out ballots would be more than $500,000 and that was too expensive. $500,000 is less than 1% of a $50 million dollar budget. It’s even less than the percentage of people voting in the board election.

Even if I agreed that $500,000 was too much to spend on the election, there is a serious engagement problem when so few taxpayers get to vote for a board that gets to spend so much taxpayer money. I encourage all your readers to visit, ssprd.org/board-election, and request their absentee ballot before April 26. It’s the only way they can participate in this exclusive election and have a say in how their tax dollars are spent.

ast week fans were treated to some great golf as we watched The Masters golf tournament. There were lots of incredible shots made over the four days of play, including some spectacular shots from so many of the players.

WINNING Although they were not winWORDS ners, Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa both holed out their bunker shots on the 18th hole. It was a magical and memorable moment.

A weekend golfer myself, I really enjoyed this year’s Masters tournament. Something I observe when watching professional golfers is the way that Michael Norton they manage the course. And part of the course management is what is referred to as the “swing thoughts”

of the golfer before each shot. For some reason, this part of the game really stood out to me this year as I realized that although we are all not professional or even amateur golfers, our thinking most times will determine and drive our actions.

In golf, the swing thought will determine the outcome of the shot. If the thought is positive, they can almost see the ball going into the hole before even swinging the club. Conversely, if it is a negative thought, they can almost visualize the ball going into the pond before they hit the ball. It’s funny because some amateur golfers when faced with a shot where they must clear a creek or a pond, will take out an older ball just in case it goes into the water. They are planting the negative thought in their mind before they even take the shot.

A look at economic dysfunction FINANCIAL STRATEGIES

T

he economy appears to be at a crossroads. Is it inflation or recession? There is plenty of commentary to choose from supporting either position. Many wonder if it is possible for the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates enough to curb inflation without causing a recession. Then we add in a Russian invasion into Ukraine and higher gas prices along with continued supply chain shortages. The economy is definitely in uncharted territory.

Interest rates have remained low since 2008, fueling the economy. Inflation is at a 40-year high according to Bloomberg. The cure for inflation is to raise rates but doing so could also cause a recession. The Federal Reserve is in a tricky place.

Bill Greiner, Chief Economist with Mariner Wealth Advisors, stated recently that there is only a 40% chance the economy will return to normalcy in 2022. This is due to the growth expectation for GDP (Gross Domestic Product) cooling off. This is based on the Federal Reserve beginning to raise rates, along with continuing economic problems related to COVID-19. But he also believes inflation will come down as well. The

Let’s look at the tasks, projects and conversations that we have on any given day. If we see a task or project as being too difficult, doubts will creep into our mind, and we will continually put it off. The task or project doesn’t go away, it just keeps getting bumped down the list, creating anxiety and stress because we know that at some point, it still must get done. If our pre-task or preproject “swing thought” is positive, We are more than likely to get after it and get it off the to-do list.

It’s no different with conversations. Whether the conversation will be a disagreement or conflict, or if is just a difficult subject that we must deal with, our pre-conversation swing thoughts are critically important. If our thoughts are nervous, negative, or angry, those thoughts will manifest themselves in the conversation. And we know that the opposite is true as well. If we go into the conversation or challenging topic that we must discuss with a confident and positive outlook, we are more than likely going to have a positive outcome, giving us even greater confidence as we move forward throughout our day.

Is this true 100% of the time? No, there are always exceptions. We could have the greatest positive

20-year average is 2.2 percent, and we are currently running close to 8%. As consumer expectations begin to soften and hopefully some supply chains open up, inflation is expected to decline before year end to around four percent.

Mr. Greiner sees other possibilities if the economy does not normalize: Stagflation or recession. Stagflation is where high inflation continues, and recession is where economic growth declines. While neither of these are great choices, how the rest of this year unfolds will be telling. If inflation persists and economic growth continues, we may be able to “grow” our way out. If interest rates rise too quickly and the money supply dries up, then GDP will likely decline. It will be difficult to have what the Federal Reserve likes to call a “soft landing,” where interest rates rise but economic growth continues to flourish.

There have been four recessions in the last 30 years¹ and they are considered a normal part of the business cycle. Recessions typically have high unemployment, which is the opposite of our current employment situation.

This is why I call this a crossroad.

When faced with a difficult conversation, no matter how confident we are and hopeful that the outcome will be what we desire, we still may walk away with no resolution or compromise. But we do know what Zig Ziglar said to be true, “A positive mental attitude alone will not allow you to do anything, but a positive mental attitude will allow you to do everything much better than a negative attitude will.”

We have all heard that we become what we think about. Or if we think about something long enough and powerfully enough, sooner or later it will come to pass. We also know that the most important and most powerful story that we tell is the story we tell ourselves. Those stories show up in our thinking, so why not make them positive, encouraging, and filled with the expectations and outcomes that we desire?

The Fed action could point to a recession, but other economic indicators remain positive.

Currently there remains continued economic growth, solid corporate earnings, and low unemployment.

These are all good signs. The stock market may remain volatile as it digests all of these changes, such as continued interest rate hikes this year.

Investors should consider market movements as opportunities with the outlook of continued economic growth and low unemployment. But always have your emergency reserves and a well-balanced portfolio to help during these unusual times. Interest rates will need to rise to return to normal in the 2% to 2.5% range.

These changes usually cause market volatility but that is a small price to pay to avoid recession.

Boulder business offers unique approach to developing relationships with canine companions

oug and Elizabeth Simpson use the scientific technique of pressure and release to train dogs by developing a relationship with the animal by communicating in its natural form of language.

“It’s the technique in the Simpsons’ methodology,” said Cindy Heller, brand champion for Tenderfoot Natural Dog Training, which the couple cofounded in Boulder over 30 years ago. “The mother dogs are pack leaders that use the same technique of pressure and release to train their puppies that leave the pack.”

The Simpsons are former horse trainers and participated in competitive horse shows. Doug is a native of Colorado, and Elizabeth has lived in Colorado for about 40 years.

When the Simpsons were learning natural horsemanship, they raised about 100 animals on their property, such as dogs, cats, parrots, ferrets, turkeys, llamas and horses.

“We learned they all speak the same language and understand each other,” Elizabeth said. “It’s humans that have forgotten.”

The science they learned through natural horsemanship

working with famous “horse whisperers” started with three drills for young colts, and they found that the technique, with some tweaking, was effective with dogs.

The Simpsons said they discovered that many dog trainers were using ineffective tools.

“It didn’t seem to be changing the future of dogs and was not changing the behavior of numbers of dogs sent to shelters,” Elizabeth said.

Elizabeth said dogs can be trained without using all the harsh devices of shocking and pinching and pockets full of food.

“It’s about developing a relationship with the animals that last a lifetime,” she said. “We know what drill to use to fix it, which is very simple, essential and natural.”

Natural pressure-and-release training techniques include pressures to get the dog’s attention using a motivator such as verbal, emotional, visual, body language, tone, distance or energy. A pressure involves standing close to the dog, talking to them in a lower voice, making eye contact, tapping your hand and startling them with a finger snap or hand clap. A release involves stepping away from the dog, whispering, looking away from your dog and using a gentle touch and a warm presence.

When having a relationship with an animal, Doug said owners need to learn to understand most of their dog’s physical movements, which have meaning.

According to the Simpsons, hu-

mans and dogs understand each other through movement and eye contact.

“If you stroke them, it’s like mama washing them,” Elizabeth said. “It changes the animal’s brainwaves by calming them.

It’s hardwired into them. It’s the relationship of love, trust and respect.”

Doug said people were adopting dogs in greater numbers during the pandemic and could not handle behavior issues. COVID-19 made it worse, and many dogs were returned to shelters.

“The problem (was) people were home most of the time — they were not going to public places or taking the dog on a walk,” he said. “The dog got used to them being home and lacking socialization. When people start going back to work, it caused the dog to suffer from separation anxiety.

“Separation anxiety can cause a dog to be destructive and stressful,” Doug explained. “If they did not have aggression, they became more aggressive.”

Doug said another common problem during COVID was people giving their dogs too much free time or recess. It’s like sending a child to school with no structure or teacher, he said.

The dog’s behavior gets worse and worse, and they become very independent and don’t want to listen. The dog doesn’t learn patience. Instead, they run, chase, jump and bite. So they look for direction from their owner — the leader of the decision-maker in the world of recess.

“The right side of the brain is all adrenaline, which is the reactionary brain to react, jump and explode. With this type of energy, the dogs do whatever they want,” Doug said.

Doug said when you work with the dog, they’ll do what you ask.

“If I asked the dog to sit, those chemicals are releasing so engagement mentally is more tiring then the physical,” he said. “The physical walk is also very mental with stops and pace changes. It’s a good time for them and gets their attention.”

Doug recommends a minimum of 30 to 40 words with every physical action or a five-word

vocabulary. Spend time together, then go back to work. It’s a limited understanding and limited engagement. The more you work with them, the calmer they become, and you become

more of a leader.

“It becomes so simple and subtle,” Doug said. “They are pretty obedient and do what you ask them to do.”

Amy Jablonski’s dog Poppy needed training. She bit Elizabeth in the face when Elizabeth tried to hold her during the first training session.

“I needed to change myself to be consistent with her training,” Jablonski said. “I took her to a birthday party with my relatives and three different dogs. I was nervous about how she would react with another dog or with one of our family members that may want to pet her. She acted so well with no issues.”

‘Once On This Island’ is fairy-tale play Performance is good way to introduce theatre to young people

Performances of “Once On This Island” run through May 8 at Town Hall Arts Center in Littleton, and this musical, based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale, “The Little Mermaid,” is one that’s a fine introduction to theatre for kids. The story is about a peasant girl who lives on one of the Caribbean islands and falls in love with a wealthy boy from the other side of the island.

Divided cultures keep them apart but the Island Gods decide to assist the heroine, Ti Moune (Camryn Nailah; Little Ti Moune, Sophia Stewart or Evan Duncan), as she seeks a way to reunite with her love, Daniel, played by Steffen Beal ...

The cast dances its way through this tale, directed by Betty Hart, with choreography by Christopher PageSanders, who skillfully moves this large cast as the story progresses.

Costumes by David J. Castellano are created from brightly printed fabrics that make a colorful, swirling scene as gods and islanders dance through this story ... Hart was aided in crafting this complex work by assistant director Mykai Eastman and music director Lee Ann Scherlong, with orchestrated tracks created by Donna Debreceni. (There is not a live band.)

Scenic design by Phil Cope, lighting by Vance McKenzie and sound by Curt Behm complete a complicated production.

Springtime and baby calves Putting the ranch in Sterling Ranch

One day, the area north of Titan Road near Sterling Ranch’s current communities will be filled in with houses and development, but right now, the property has a different occupant — cattle.

That’s because the Sterling Ranch Development Company decided to lease that 3,400-acre area to a local rancher as part of co-owner Harold Smethills’ goal of proving that suburban ranching is possible, he said.

“There will always be cattle on Sterling Ranch,” Smethills said.

Even after the land is built out, they will bring cattle into their open spaces, he said.

For now, there are about 220 head of cattle on the property, not including about 200 additional calves that were born there this spring.

Matt Clough, who leases the land, has been ranching in Douglas County for about 30 years and in Sterling

So far, none of the Clough’s calves have been lost to predators this year.

CoCo, 6, said she wants to be a barrel race someday. But that’s not all.

“I also want to be a rodeo queen,” she said.

Matt keeps his cattle at the Sterling Ranch during the winter and moves them back to summer pastures after calving season.

“I think people are very happy to see the cattle in these urban environments,” he said. “They love it.”

Part of the reason Sterling Ranch leases to Clough is because as the cattle graze, they decrease fuel for potential wildfires.

“Douglas County has been great about understanding the benefit of grazing,” he said.

Are earthquakes something to fear in Colorado?

Centennial State is far from plate boundaries

Whether it’s hail, wildfire, or tornadoes, Colorado has its fair share of natural disasters. But what about earthquakes? Louise Watson, of Bailey, is one of several people who reached out through Colorado Public Radio’s Colorado Wonders webpage to ask about seismic activity here. Answers were not far away.

Golden, Colorado is home to the National Earthquake Information Center, which sits on the School of Mines campus. Scientists there monitor seismic activity around the world, around the clock, and take calls from people who feel shaking.

Seismologist William Yeck explained that Colorado is not an epicenter for major earthquakes, nor is it immune to them. And sometimes they are triggered by human activity.

This interview with Colorado Public Radio host Ryan Warner has been edited for clarity and length.

Ryan Warner: In general, are we a shakin’ place?

William Yeck: We don’t have seismicity like you see in some areas. Where we really see high seismic hazard is where we have plate boundaries. So, for example: California. Most people have heard about

the San Andreas Fault that marks the plate boundary between the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate. And it really creates a high seismic hazard. There’s lots of seismicity there. In Colorado, we don’t have any tectonic plate boundaries like that. So, we don’t see that discrete lineation of seismicity that you would see in other regions.

Warner: Are all faults related to plates?

Yeck: No, they aren’t. So, we have faults all throughout Colorado. Most of them are really small faults. And that’s true anywhere in the US. There are faults everywhere. Just in most cases, the slip rates are very, very small and those faults might be very, very small. So you don’t see significant earthquakes. When we have earthquakes away from a plate boundary like that, we refer to them as interplate earthquakes.

So, in Colorado, we do have those interplate earthquakes, but then really, when we look at seismicity and we record it, we see it’s dispersed throughout the state.

Warner: In layman’s terms, what would trigger a Colorado earthquake? And let’s talk about natural causes first. We’ll get into the idea that people can trigger earthquakes a bit later.

Yeck: So even though we’re away from these tectonic plate boundaries, we still have a stressed crust.

That stress is transmitted far away from the plate boundaries, as well as there can be local changes that

change the stress within the subsurface. And anytime there’s stress placed on a fault, it has the potential to slip. So, a fault is just a plane in the earth. And when it slips, we feel an earthquake.

Warner: What is the biggest recorded earthquake in Colorado history?

Yeck: Historically, the largest earthquake that we have evidence for was in 1882, a magnitude 6.6. But that was before we could actually record seismicity on seismographs and accurately detect the location and the size of the earthquake. So, for that earthquake, we had to rely on felt reports — or what people describe and the shaking — to try to

estimate where it occurred.

Fellows scores 5 goals in tight match

Senior midfielder/attacker Gunnar Fellows led Valor Christian to a big boys lacrosse win on April 15.

Fellows scored five goals, including two in a decisive fourth quarter spurt to help Valor secure a 14-13 win over Mountain Vista in a game played at Valor Christian.

It was a matchup of the two best boys lacrosse teams in the state, at least according to the CHSAANow.com poll.

Valor came into the game ranked second behind top-ranked Vista. After the victory, the Eagles are 8-1 and 2-0 in league play. The Golden Eagles are 9-1 and 3-1 in the conference.

“Gunnar Fellows is our solo captain,” said Valor Head Coach Josh Hoffman. “He’s committed to West Point so he will be at Army next year. He’s a great leader. He does a good job of leading our offense and keeping our morale high.”

Fellows scored the first goal of the game and, more importantly, came through along with Connor Garrison in the fourth quarter to provide Valor with the winning margin.

Mountain Vista led 12-11 when Fellows scored with seven minutes remaining in the game. Garrison, who is committed to play at Sacred Heart, followed with a goal and then Fellows scored again to give Valor a 14-12 lead about 3:30 to play.

Valor kept possession for two minutes until Mountain Vista narrowed the gap to one goal with 31 seconds showing on the clock.

“It was really important that we kept possession at the end of the game to keep the pressure off the defense,” said Fellows, who leads the team with 38 goals and 43 points. “It was really a great job for our defense giving us the ball on offense, trusting us and giving us opportunities. It was really good that we controlled the tempo of the game. It was a big win for sure. We enjoyed the win for one night but its on to the next game. It’s a long season and once we start playoffs we’ll probably see them (Vista) again.”

Besides Fellows, Garrison, Liam Goodwin and Alex Rismani each had two goals.

Baden Brown had a goal and three assists.

“We try to focus on always winning the ground ball battles,” said Hoffman. “If you win the ground ball battles you have possession.

Mountain Vista is a good team, a scrappy team and I’m sure we will see them again.”

Sophomore Brown and freshman Harry Luong each picked up five ground balls for Valor.

“We been trying to focus on ourselves to make sure we’re doing the little things right,” added Hoffman.“Our coaching staff keeps emphasizing to get better.”

Junior Ethan Pearson had four goals for Vista and senior Dillon Pless had three.

Eaglecrest beats top-ranked Cherry Creek

Eaglecrest’s boys volleyball team showed Cherry Creek that it is tough to be the top-ranked team in the state.

The Raptors, which lost 3-0 to the Bruins in a March 24 match, dominated the No. 1 Bruins in a 3-0 victory on April 14 in the Creek gum.

Eaglecrest, ranked second in the CHSAANow.com poll, swept the Bruins with 25-18, 25-22 and 25-16 set wins.

Cherry Creek’s record dipped to 16-2 on the season and 6-1 in the Centennial League. Eaglecrest improved to 11-3 overall and 4-3 in the league.

“Before tonight in our minds we beat Eaglecrest in straight sets last time so couldn’t we do it again,”

said Creek Coach Cara Quayle. “We just need to have the mentality that no match is going to be easy.

Every team we play is going to put up a fight and we’re not just going to be in the game. We have to fight for it. Eaglecrest showed that we just aren’t going to be handed the game. We have to go out and fight for every point every time we play and nothing is going to be handed to us.”

Senior Tyler Van Hare, who had four kills and four digs in the final match statistics, agreed.

“It was only our second loss of the year,” he said.

“We’re going to go to practice and get better. We go into the next game, forgetting all about our record.

We are 0-0 and hope for another win. I feel we’re a

better team than last year.

As far as skill we’re about the same but this year we’ve got a tenacity that is unbridled.”

Senior Josh Guthrie had nine kills and 19 service receives to pace the Bruins while Miles Mante had five kills. Senior Jordan Cardenas had 18 assists for the shorthanded Bruins.

“We had two kids that were out with COVID,” said Quayle.“We knew it was going to be different but we still wanted to fight for it. It didn’t go the way we expected or planned. We’re 16-2 and if anything it just lights a fire for us and we want to get after it. Next week we’ll have our regular lineup back and be ready to try to turn it around, I’ve got a great group of guys and it’s be a great season so far”.

Valor girls top Creek lacrosse team 19-16 Second-half surge puts Eagles in win column

Valor Christian’s Kaley Kakac scored just one goal but she and teammates Rachel Pallo and Eliza Osburn made a big difference in a Top 5 game between the Eagles and Cherry Creek on April 9.

Valor, ranked second in the CHSAANow.com state poll, put together a surge in the second half to defeat No 3 Cherry Creek 19-16 in a game played at the Valor Christian field.

The Eagles improved to 5-2 on the season while Creek suffered its second loss in six games.

Kakac, a junior midfielder, took all the draws for Valor and won a majority of them to help the Eagles keep possession of the ball.

“I felt like I did good on the draws and stepped up to try to help our team by getting the ball and getting possession,” said Kakac.

“You have to work with your teammates in the circle and be able to communicate with them about what’s going on and getting the ball.

On a draw you just try to push it (the ball) to yourself or push it to a teammate in the circle or get it to a spot where your team can get the ball.”

Kaley Kakac has a .681 draw percentage for the season and 112 draw controls in seven games.

Both Valor Christian coach Terry Ellis and Cherry Creek mentor Bailey Zerr Tremaroli believed Kakac and her midfield teammates played a key role in the outcome of the game.

“Our midfielders, Rachel Palllo, Eliza Osburn and Kaley Kakac, turned it on the second half and they knew if we had possession of the ball we’d have a good chance of winning,” Ellis said.

“Draws are important especially at this level because there is no shot clock. So whoever controls the draws can basically control the game. I give credit to those three because they are the main draw team. If they win the draw, we have possession and can score. It the most important thing in lacrosse, having possession of the

Tremaroli also spoke highly of her team.

‘I’m really proud of our girls,” the Creek coach said. “I thought we fought from the first whistle until the last whistle. Valor is a great team.

“Draws are very important and Valor is good at winning the draws.

So that was a big challenge that we had to overcome. Sometimes we did it and sometimes we didn’t and I think that’s probably what the game came to was their ability to control the draws.”

Junior Reagan Digby had five goals and two assists for seven points to pace the Eagles. Eliza Osburn had four goals and three assists for seven points. Courntey Kakac and Amanda Stevens also had four goals for Valor.

Molly Threlkeld and Lilly Assini each had three goals for the Bruins.

A Colorado House of Representatives committee narrowly voted April 13 to advance a bipartisan measure aimed at limiting homeowners associations’ powers to file foreclosure cases based on fines for community-rule violations, capping such penalties and increasing due process for homeowners.

Colorado law allows HOAs to seek judicial foreclosure against homeowners who are at the equivalent of six months behind on their routine dues, also known as assessments.

But that total can include other charges, such as fines, late fees and collection costs — including the HOA’s legal fees.

As Rocky Mountain PBS and ProPublica reported last week, HOAs across the state have initiated more than 2,400 foreclosure cases — including those involving fines — from January 2018 through February 2022. Those cases continued during the pandemic, as HOAs were not subject to government moratoriums that prevented many mortgage lenders from foreclosing.

“It is absolutely heartbreaking to hear people losing their homes over fees,” said Rep. Edie Hooton, D-Boulder, who voted in favor of the bill. “I would like to see some real meaningful progress on the HOA laws in Colorado.”

House Bill 22-1137 would not stop HOAs from seeking to foreclose against homeowners who are behind on their routine assessments but would prohibit foreclosures in situations where the association’s lien against the home consists only of fines or the costs of collecting them. The proposal would also prevent HOAs from charging daily fines and would cap penalties at $500 per violation, the bill’s sponsors said.

“One person came to us and told us about a fee that started out at $150 and ended up being $3,000. So it racks up pretty quickly and accumulates, and we want to stop that,” Rep. Naquetta Ricks, D-Aurora, one of the bill’s sponsors, told Rocky Mountain PBS and ProPublica. “If you buy your property and you’ve been paying your mortgage, and now you have a small violation or a fee, is it right for an HOA to be able to foreclose and kick you out of your home? No, it’s not right.”

The Transportation and Local Government committee heard testimony on the bill in early March but did not take a vote until April 13. In the interim, the bill’s sponsors met with community stakeholders, including those representing the HOA industry.

PBS and ProPublica that they support the overall goal of eliminating foreclosures based solely on HOA fines. But they oppose several provisions of the current proposal, including the cap on fines, while hoping to find common ground as the bill moves forward.

“This means that, if a homeowner wants to paint their house pink, has that request denied and does it anyway, the homeowner will be allowed to violate the rules for an extra $500.00 payment. The association’s only option to enforce the covenant will be to then take the owner to court. It’s better to levy a fine that actually makes breaking a rule unattractive,” said the Community Associations Institute’s Lindsay Smith, an HOA attorney.

The bill also requires HOAs to notify homeowners of delinquencies several times in different ways, including posting a notice on the home. HOA leaders have argued that such provisions could increase management costs.

HOA homeowner advocate Stan Hrincevich said he disagrees with the argument that the proposal

would result in increased costs for homeowners who pay on time, saying HOAs typically bill such costs directly to delinquent homeowners.

Rep. Kevin Van Winkle, R-Highlands Ranch, voted against the bill and told the committee that HOAs are run by volunteer boards, and that homeowners who disagree with the decisions being made in their community have the option of joining the board to change things. “This micromanages on such a microscopic level it’s actually quite incredible,” he said.

The committee passed the bill by a vote of 7-6, with several lawmakers pointing to the dozens of foreclosure cases filed against homeowners in the Master Homeowners Association for Green Valley Ranch as a call to action.

“It is imperative that we address this problem,” said Rep. Meg Froelich, D-Greenwood Village, who added that the issue is at a “crisis point.”

The bill will still need to clear the full House and the Senate.
