Four of the five Elizabeth School Board seats are up for election this November, and all six candidates were present to answer questions at the Oct. 11 Candidate Forum in the Elizabeth High School cafeteria.

Four incumbent board members — Mike Calahan, Rhonda Olsen, Mary Powell and Jonathan Waller — are running as the “Kids First” slate, and there are two newcomers to the race, Roxanne Aviles and Dan Dahring. Though the incumbent group is running as a slate, constituents are free to vote for any and do not have to vote for all.

Initially, only about 27 community members showed up but people came and went as the night went on. Rather than a traditional forum setup, the event was more of an informal, roundtable discussion. Uncertain at first, attendees eventually milled around from table to table, engaging directly with candidates or jumping in on existing conversations.

Douglas County says no to immigrants from Denver

Public officials in Douglas County called a special meeting to send a message to Denver: Don’t send the mounting population of migrants to Douglas County.

Douglas County Commissioner Abe Laydon acknowledged his own Latino heritage and said he recognizes “the plight of those seeking asylum.”

With “that said, I also want to be responsible (with) every tax dollar,” Laydon said at an Oct. 12 news conference after the special meeting, adding that he thinks the resources in Douglas County communities are already overstretched.

scenario they say would pose a threat to public health and safety.

“The City of Denver recently began housing migrants at a hotel outside their jurisdiction in Adams County,” said Dan Avery, a Douglas County staff member. That action prompted Douglas County to review its policies, Avery said at the Oct. 12 meeting.

Mike Hill, director of the Douglas County Health Department, said the county doesn’t have much experience sheltering that type of population.

At the meeting, two of Douglas County’s commissioners — Commissioner Lora Thomas was absent — voted to approve a resolution that framed the issue as a public health and safety risk.

Officials did not cite broad evidence of crime trends increasing due to the influx of migrants. They pointed to a recent incident in Highlands Ranch.

“On April 28th, a 25-year-old man was kidnapped from an RTD Park-NRide in Highlands Ranch. The Douglas County Sheriff ’s Office and a law enforcement agency in Rockford, Illinois arrested two Venezuelan migrants, who are being held on charges of kidnapping and assault,” the text of the resolution says.

“I don’t want to label illegal immigrants as all criminals, legal immigrants as all criminals,” Parker Mayor Jeff Toborg said during the meeting.

He directed some comments toward Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, saying “this is an issue of your predecessor’s making” and that officials in Douglas County don’t have the resources to help.

“Those who enter the country illegally can pose a significant public health risk to a community when there is an increase in … communicable disease,” the resolution says.

An Adams County action this month struck a similar tone.

“Migrant persons, primarily asylum seekers, are a particularly vulnerable population because often times (1) they have traveled from countries with limited or no access to routine healthcare – including vaccination and chronic disease management, (2) they have traveled for prolonged periods living in settings that lack hygiene and through countries with potential exposure to disease (personto-person, intestinal, vector borne, etc.),” a recent public health order regarding requirements for sheltering of migrants in Adams County from

the Adams County Board of Health says.

The Douglas County resolution also says: “Douglas County seeks to limit the potential for disputes about the ability for Douglas County to provide services to migrant populations.”

“Douglas County expressly affirms that the county is not a sanctuary jurisdiction and calls on the cities and counties in the Denver Metropolitan Area — including the City and County of Denver and the new Denver Mayor — to publicly do the same,” the resolution adds.

“50,000 Venezuelan migrants arrived at the southern border last month, and 195,848 have arrived since last September, comprising nearly 10% of the two million migrants apprehended by Border Patrol in fiscal year 2023 according to data recently obtained by CBS News,” the resolution says.

Many are released to seek asylum, a process that can take years, the resolution says.

Seeking asylum — or safety from persecution — is a legal process.

“Seeking asylum is a human right protected under our laws,” the website for the American Civil Liberties Union, or ACLU, says.

The total number of migrants that have been served by the City of Denver is nearly 24,000 as of Oct. 12, according to the city’s website. The city’s count of migrant occupancy appears to go back to December or slightly before.

“Over 3,068 are currently sheltered in non-city facilities like hotels. On October 1st alone, nine busloads arrived from Texas,” the resolution states.

Laydon and Commissioner George Teal voted in favor of the resolution.

Thomas, the Douglas commissioner who was not present at the meeting, issued a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“In regard to why I was absent from today’s @douglascountyco Business Meeting where a Resolution pertaining to Denver’s handling of the Migrant Crisis was approved: While I agree that Douglas County does not have the resources to assist Denver with the migrant crisis they are facing because of the open southern border, I have always found that communication and cooperation are more effective at problem-solving than negative, political rhetoric,” Thomas’ post says.

Phone and Internet Discounts Available to CenturyLink Customers The Colorado Public Utilities Commission designated CenturyLink as an Eligible Telecommunications Carrier within its service area for universal service purposes.

CenturyLink’s basic local service rates for residential voice lines are $30.50 per month and business services are $43.50 per month.

Specific rates will be provided upon request.

CenturyLink participates in the Lifeline program, which makes residential telephone or qualifying broadband service more affordable to eligible low-income individuals and families. Eligible customers may qualify for Lifeline discounts of $5.25/month for voice or bundled voice service or $9.25/month for qualifying broadband or broadband bundles. Residents who live on federally recognized Tribal Lands may qualify for additional Tribal benefits if they participate in certain additional federal eligibility programs.

The Lifeline discount is available for only one telephone or qualifying broadband service per household, which can be either a wireline or wireless service. Broadband speeds must be at least 25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload to qualify.

CenturyLink also participates in the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), which provides eligible households with a discount on broadband service. The ACP provides a discount of up to $30 per month toward broadband service for eligible households and up to $75 per month for households on qualifying Tribal lands.

For both programs, a household is defined as any individual or group of individuals who live together at the same address and share income and expenses. Services are not transferable, and only eligible consumers may enroll in these programs. Consumers who willfully make false statements to obtain these discounts can be punished by fine or imprisonment and can be barred from these programs.

It’s time to prepare for the Nov. 7 election as ballots were mailed to eligible voters beginning Oct. 16.

Here is some voter information, resources and drop box locations across Douglas County.

Twenty-one ballot drop boxes opened Oct. 16 at various locations in Castle Rock, Castle Pines, Highlands Ranch, Larkspur, Lone Tree and Parker. The locations will close at 7 p.m. on Election Day. The drop boxes will be open 24 hours a day and according to Douglas County, the boxes are bolted into the ground, have lighting and 24/7 video surveillance.

Residents can check their voter registration at GoVoteColorado.gov to ensure they are registered to vote.

If not, they will see how to update voter registration.

Those who can register to vote must affirm they are a U.S. citizen, have been a Colorado resident for at least 22 days before the election, are at least 18 years old and the residence address provided is your legal place of residence.

For those who are away from home, such as serving in the military or are away at college, to ensure a ballot, update the address where the ballot should be sent. Detailed information can be found on the county website.

Voter Service and Polling Centers will open across Douglas County starting Oct. 30 and will remain open through election day.

These centers are intended to help Douglas County citizens register to vote or update their voter registration, replace a ballot or drop off a voted ballot and vote in person, which includes an ADA accessible voting machine.

The Collaborative Foster Care Program was created in 2008 as a joint venture between Arapahoe and Jefferson counties, with a goal to combine the best practice from both counties and improve placement outcomes for children in care, the program’s website says.

In 2012, Douglas County joined the program.

Headquartered in Arapahoe County, the program is housed in Littleton, where supervisors and staff from all three counties recruit, train, certify and support foster families, the website says.

Douglas County is seeking volunteers to serve as foster parents in the commuSHUTTERSTOCK nity.

Collaborative Foster Care Program, a partnership among Arapahoe, Douglas and Jefferson counties.

Each year, the program hosts recruitment and awareness days, a Douglas County news release said.

“You may have seen Douglas County staff this week hanging flyers and talking to business owners and residents about foster care,” the Oct. 5 news release said.

If you’re interested in becoming a foster family, the first step is to attend an information meeting online.

One session takes place 6-7:30 p.m.

Kids who need a home often depend on foster parents, and Douglas County and the local foster program have put out the call for new families to open their homes.

And even if you aren’t interested in fostering a child, you can support those who are.

“Foster parents provide a safe, temporary home for children and youth whose parents or caregivers are unable to care for them,” says a website for CO4Kids, Colorado’s effort to raise awareness of the need for foster and adoptive families.

When a child or teenager is removed from their home and a caseworker is unable to identify a family friend or relatives to care for them

temporarily, officials place them in foster care, the website says.

That process doesn’t necessarily put the child on a track toward adoption.

“It is important to remember that when a child or teenager is removed from their home, the primary goal is usually to return the child or teenager to their parent or caregiver once they can provide a safe and stable home,” the site adds. “However, if that option is not available, adoption or another type of permanent home is the secondary goal.”

For Coloradans who want to help ensure kids have a safe and loving place to stay along the way, the local foster program in a large swath of the Denver metro area acts as a guide.

Halloween time is Elbert County treat Family-friendly events set for various locations

Fall weather is here, the leaves are changing, and spooky season is upon us. Elbert County is home to several family-friendly Halloween events and activities this October.

The Elizabeth Park and Recreation District will host Halloween Haven on Friday, Oct. 27 at Casey Jones Pavilion. The free event, which runs from 6-8 p.m., will include a kid-friendly haunted house and a hayride through the trails of Casey Jones Park.

On Saturday, Oct. 28 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the Elizabeth Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting their annual Trick or Treat Street and Boo Bash on Main Harvest Festival. With extended hours this year, families can visit Elizabeth’s Historic Main Street and enjoy vendor booths, Trunk or Treat, and costume contests. This event is free to attend.

On Sunday, Oct. 29 from 6-9 p.m., the Spooktacular Halloween Party and Trunk-or-Treat event in Elbert is one you won’t want to miss. Located at the Russell Gates Mercantile Building at 6776 Lavell Ave., this event is hosted by the Elbert Town Committee and the Elbert Woman’s Club.

Lacey Catterton, an Elbert resident who helps organize the event, says: “We mainly run the event with members from our respective committees/organizations. Both of

these organizations are nonprofits, so they are run by individuals who give up their own personal time to volunteer to make these sort of events successful. This will be our second consecutive year hosting a Halloween event at the Russell Gates Mercantile Building. Last year’s event turned out to be a huge success, so this year we decided to host another event with even more attractions!”

games and of course lots and lots of candy can be expected. While there is not an exact participant count from last year, Catterton estimates a few hundred people enjoyed the event. “With the addition of Trunkor-Treat to the event, I can tell you we are extremely excited for this year! We also anticipate amazing additions to our Haunted House.

We recently had an amazing local family offer their time, Halloween decorations and expertise in setting up Halloween scenes to help us this year!”

The event is free to the public, with the goal of creating a sense of community and providing fun activities for the entire family to enjoy together. “My favorite part about hosting these events has been watching the children and adults alike come out and just genuinely enjoy themselves,” says Catterton. “We get many parents who come up to us and thank us for bringing these sort of community events back to Elbert and that is what makes all the hard work worth it! We genuinely love our town and our community and want to continue to create ways we can all come together.”

elected, Olsen said she’d like to “keep doing what we’ve been doing, keep progress moving forward with the focus on academics, classical subjects (STEM).” She also wants to “increase vocational training opportunities and protect parental rights.” The “Kids First” site for Calahan, Olsen, Powell and Waller — elizabethkidsfirst.com — lists vocational education, home school collaboration, parent partnerships, fiscal responsibility and school security as priorities.

Aviles is the only classroom teacher running and has worked in education for 12 years. Aviles’ campaign site — avilesforesd.com — lists rebuilding the community, transparency and accountability, and increasing school funding as primary concerns.

“I hope that I am able to unite this divided community and I hope that we are able to put the focus back on our students,” Aviles said, “because that’s what the board is there for — to be the bridge between the community and the school district.” While engaged in a discussion with a community member, Aviles emphasized that “our kids matter more than these ideologies.”

Attendee Kay Seifried, a former teacher, said she’d like to see an educator on the board: “They know what’s going on in the school and what’s positive and negative in schools.”

At Waller’s table, parent Douglas Watkins told Waller he’s concerned enough about the curriculum in the Elizabeth School District that his student now attends Douglas County School District.

It seemed like “teachers are fending for themselves” in Elizabeth, Watkins said.

Waller responded that strengthening the ESD curriculum is a real priority for him, as is vocational education.

He wants students “to learn about the basics” and to graduate with a “good, solid basis.”

Dahring was often surrounded by a crowd who seemed intent on pressing him for his positions on hot-button topics. Dahring recalls being asked about things like white guilt, drag queens and face masks — all of which he feels are irrelevant when it comes to a potential role on the board.

Dahring gamely said, “People are focused on things that aren’t even happening here and aren’t even relevant.

Let’s focus on academics.” He emphasized he doesn’t want to waste time on hypotheticals that detract from the real issues in Elizabeth. Dahring says on his campaign site — dan4esb.com

— that he wants to focus on academic excellence, fostering an inclusive and diverse learning environment, school safety, parent and community engagement, and fiscal responsibility.

At another table, Mike Calahan stated that one of his biggest priorities is teacher pay: “We can’t compete with Douglas County for good, talented teachers.” He also wants to see ESD adjust to the rapid pace of growth in the area and ensure schools maintain a low student-to-teacher ratio. After chatting with Calahan, David Marcus, a local parent, thanked him. Marcus wants a school board candidate who “puts my kids first” and felt Calahan fit the bill.

Dahring and Aviles were the focal point of intense scrutiny from some.

They stand out as the only two candidates who are not registered Republicans — Aviles is registered as unaffiliated and Dahring as a Democrat. Though most attendees engaged in respectful dialogue with the candidates, some were more contentious and confrontational. A couple of attendees took the time to pointedly record Dahring and Aviles with their cell phones.

Two District Accountability Committee members attended the forum and took the opportunity to accuse Aviles of lying, falsifying information and misrepresenting herself. Specifically, they believe that Aviles falsified a recommendation letter, lied about her educational qualifications and hid her political affiliations. They were also concerned Aviles would push critical race theory (CRT) and social emotional learning (SEL) in Elizabeth schools.

Aviles says she has been transparent with the community and has nothing to hide. She received several letters of recommendation. Aviles took one letter in particular off her campaign site because she felt its purpose was mis-

understood and does not want her campaign to harm anyone. A copy of that letter and Aviles’ last five years of teacher evaluations were available at her table. Aviles indicated she can substantiate her educational background and has done so on her campaign site.

Though she has received campaign donations from Democratic constituents, members of other parties have also made donations, and she herself remains unaffiliated and is “committed to representing all families in our district, regardless of affiliation.” Aviles went on to say that CRT is not being taught in Elizabeth schools and SEL is simply “necessary life skills that our students need in order to grow into productive citizens.”

This school board race, like many around the country, has impassioned people. Dahring said he received a phone call from an angry property owner who did not want Dahring’s campaign signs on his land. Though Dahring says he didn’t place a sign and it was likely on a public easement, the caller said if he saw Dahring or anyone with one of Dahring’s signs near his property, he’d shoot them.

Attendee Steve Freer started paying more attention to the school board after his son helped with A/V for several school board meetings last school year.

After a particularly dramatic meeting, his son came home and said he “didn’t realize school boards were so political.”

“Evidently school board members are not in tune with what’s actually happening inside the schools,” Freer said.

For Freer, the upcoming vote is one to take seriously and the roundtable was an ideal chance to get an idea of what each candidate stands for.

Voters will decide the races on Election Day, Nov. 7.

Benefit from risk

T

here is risk in everything we do.

Why not find a way to benefit from it?

We take risks every day: Driving a car, crossing the street, going to a public place. There is even risk in being lazy, not exercising, for example.

But there should always be a time and place where each activity is beneficial.

There is risk in investing as well as not investing and missing out on possibilities. The real trick is to make the risks you are already taking work for you.

Risk is an essential concept for financial planning. Financial advisers are required by regulation to know their clients, communicate risks, and help guide them based on their preferences and needs. What I have learned in this exercise is that clients rarely understand their own tolerance for risk.

A good example is you got home safely from work, so you felt no risk in driving today. Your investments are positive, so maybe it doesn’t matter if they are too risky for you. It is a fact of human nature that we generally only feel risk-averse when the very risk we expected and planned for actually materializes. This can make it difficult to plan around and achieve financial independence.

There is research that shows the benefits of staying invested, even during perceived risky events such as market swings and volatility, although

it is important to remember that past performance is no guarantee of future results. Based on my experience investors who get nervous and make emotional decisions during large declines in the market and withdraw Patricia Kummer investments or reallocate investments run the risk of underperforming the markets over the long-term.

As an adviser, I wonder how many of those people would have told me to invest only in assets that go up … and is there even such a thing?

The higher current interest rates on CDs and money market accounts remind me of similar times in my 38year career when suddenly investors decided not to invest but just save at the bank instead.

Saving is good. We recommend everyone have a savings account. This is for at least six months of living expenses in case of job loss or illness. It is also important to have savings for large purchases within the next year or two. But if you need your assets to grow at a greater rate than inflation, over long periods of time, being a saver instead of an investor will not likely help you achieve your goals.

Education Corner: The power of one

popular song from a few years ago (dating myself here!) gave us the idea that “One is the Loneliest Number.” However, I believe strongly in the power of one.

The November 2023 election is just days away and ballots are arriving in mailboxes all across Douglas County. As you open your ballot, I encourage you to pause and reflect on the incredible opportunity found inside that envelope. Every vote matters. It is the power of one.

In the Douglas County School District (DCSD), we have ballot measures 5A and 5B on the November ballot.

VOICES A shift to center

I

n a recent conversation with a friend from Florida, I heard her say something I would never have expected. She said instead of remaining RepubliFROM THE can, she is going to EDITOR change her party affiliation to unaffiliated or independent.

I was shocked.

She has always leaned far right.

She has always supported her state’s Republican views. Yet here she Thelma Grimes is telling me she’s had enough of both parties and no longer wants to be a member of either.

Then, a few days later, an editor with another publication posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he is seeing more shifts in party affiliations and wonders what would happen if at some point we got a logical independent or unaffiliated candidate — would they fare well on Election Day because Americans have grown tired of the lack of civility or maturity of the current two parties?

When I first registered to vote, it was as a Republican. I was raised in a conservative town. It is what I knew. And, as I have said, it’s still the direction I lean on a lot of issues — although, I should stress not all, and I say lean conservatively.

Years later, when I started covering politics more as a journalist, I chose to become unaffiliated. I did it for work, but over the years, I have been glad I did. I am glad to this day that I am not affiliated with either party.

Like my fellow editor, I too hope for a day whn I can vote for a thirdparty candidate. I won’t do it just to prove a point, but because it is a good candidate that I believe in. We haven’t gotten there yet but given the current political climate — I can see maybe in the not-so-distant future it becoming a possibility.

In April, Axios had a story on the shifting of political affiliations. Quoting a Gallup poll, the article said a record 49% of Americans see themselves as politically independent, which is the same as the Democrats

and Republicans combined.

The article went on to explain why this shift matters, stressing that it means rising future challenges to the money of the two traditional parties, and helps explain how volatile and evenly split politics are.

Listing this part as a “fun fact,” the Axios article goes on to state that every election since 2004 — except 2012 — has seen the White House, Senate, or House flip control. Antsy, unsatisfied independent voters are the reason.

In Colorado, being automatically registered as unaffiliated has increased the middle-of-the-road voters. However, I do think the increase is also indicative of the Axios article — we, as Americans, are unsatisfied and tired of out leadership.

Yet, with all this data and trends, I find it interesting how neither party is changing direction. Instead, they are sticking to nonsensical fighting, partisan bickering, and believing they are the ones who are right.

Look at Republicans. Many of them are sticking with Trump despite all the evidence that says they are not going to win with that approach. They also ousted a House speaker who I think was just trying to keep the government open.

Democrats — they are no better.

They all voted and went along with ousting the House speaker, yet now they are in a jam with no replacement found as of our press time, and the war in the Middle East might just require a vote in the U.S. Can’t take a vote without a House leader.

If Democrats had taken the adult approach and not played the Republican games — we would not be here.

Let’s face it — while Republicans are keeping the headlines for their political games these days, Democrats are playing them just as often, even if they are not grabbing the headlines as much.

I am hopeful that one day we do get to vote in the middle and send an even clearer message to the two parties that the games are tiring and will mean election losses later.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Wise calls for change

My name is Corey Wise. I worked in the Douglas County School District for 26 years as a teacher, principal and superintendent. Our daughters received a great education thanks to fantastic school staff, teachers and principals. I want to thank them for everything they continue to do for all of our children and families. DCSD cannot afford to lose quality educators to neighboring districts. DCSD does not need politics involved, but quality people with integrity, who are invested. Leadership that prioritizes the school district and not political agendas is essential. I write this letter to share my wholehearted endorsement for Susan Meek, Brad Geiger and Valerie Thompson for the DCSD Board of Education.

These three represent what is best for students, families and teachers.

Susan Meek has the most training and experience of any BoE member and leads with students, families and employees as her top priority. Valerie Thompson and her husband are raising two children in Parker and she has served on the District Accountability Committee and the Mill Bond Exploratory Committee, demonstrating her commitment to DCSD. Brad Geiger has been on the Long Range Planning Committee for nine years and the Mill Bond Exploratory Com-

mittee and raised children in DCSD. Brad asks challenging questions and uses data-driven decisions no matter who is in leadership. All of these candidates are good family people who are invested in DCSD for the right reasons. Let’s come together as a community.

In contrast, the continued lack of integrity, fiscal irresponsibility and poor leadership demonstrated by Douglas County School Board Directors Mike Peterson, Christy Williams, Becky Myers and Kaylee Winegar is inexcusable. A Douglas County judge ruled Peterson, Williams, Myers and Winegar violated Colorado Open Meetings Law. Their handling of the superintendent change and community allegations of bullying, racism and discrimination resulted in lawsuits costing DCSD millions with buyouts, settlements and attorney fees eroding trust with staff, teachers, principals and the community.

In the words used by Mike Peterson at the Legend HS candidate forum in 2021, the board majority should “expect every taxpayer, parent, student, and teacher in this district to hold [them] accountable.” To do so, please vote for Meek, Geiger and Thompson for the DCSD Board of Education.

Conservative slate’s secrecy

Transparency begets trust. Sitting conservatives on the Douglas County School Board have fallen short demonstrating transparency. The newest slate of conservative candidates appears to be following the same path. At the Oct. 4, 2023 GOP/ Parker Conservatives forum, these candidates and handlers excluded a journalist. This was a free, public event. A GOP organizer and the venue’s owner escorted out a member of the press. The action shows the candidates have not learned a thing about transparency and trust. Their excuse? They didn’t know it was a closed forum until they arrived.

Good governance and leadership require taking responsibility for your people as well as knowing what’s expected of you.

Is Jimmy Graham’s appearance one reason organizers didn’t want their program reported? Let’s recall that Jimmy Graham and his Able Shepherd group interfered with a lawful public gathering. His attendance with 75 men in white shirts frightened families and caused children to cry. His inclusion clearly shows GOP values. They embrace a man known for intolerance and exclusion. I’ll bet forum attendees applauded his disrespectful comments toward diverse populations.

Are these opaque and intolerant GOP candidates the adults you trust to make decisions for children in Douglas County Schools?

Katie Barrett, Castle Rock Biden’s priorities wrong

The scourge of fentanyl and other drugs in our communities has affected millions of Coloradans. In fact, only two years ago, our state set a record high for overdoses, with nearly 1,900 Coloradans losing their lives. But this crisis also impacts family members of people battling addiction and those living in neighborhoods where crime has skyrocketed as a result of the illicit drug trade.

Clearly, we cannot afford to wait any longer for action. Unfortunately, the Biden administration has been asleep at the wheel while our communities have been forced to contend with the fallout of this crippling epidemic. Instead of se-

curing our border and empowering law enforcement to crack down on drug dealers, the administration is training its regulatory sights on an array of industries and going after Google’s search engine in court.

Is this really what Americans are clamoring for right now as overdoses and crime rates tick up?

A president’s legacy is defined by the issues they prioritize and how effectively they tackle those challenges. The Biden administration needs to seriously reevaluate where precious time and resources are being spent — lives depend on it.

Kevin Edling, Centennial 5A and 5B are needed

I am writing in response to McKenna Harford’s interview with James Maras, published on Sept. 27, in which he spoke out in opposition to Douglas County school funding initiatives 5A and 5B. I served with Jim on the Fiscal Oversight Committee (FOC) for four years and have always considered him a friend, but I disagree with him here.

Jim’s personal views are simply that — they are not representative of the majority opinion of the FOC or any of the Board of Education’s four advisory committees. Those groups’ support for the 2022 and 2023 bond and MLO initiatives have been documented repeatedly, most recently in the unanimous vote of support by the Mill Bond Oversight Committee on Sept. 27 in a public meeting held at Ponderosa High School.

To quote the FOC’s memo presented to the Board on Aug. 8, “The financial needs of the district are great and will continue without a major shift in operational plans.”

Why do we need to pass the 2023 MLO? DougCo teachers’ salaries today aren’t competitive. DCSD teachers receive an annual salary $15,000 less than their peers in Littleton Public Schools (LPS) and $8,000 less than their peers in the JeffCo School District. DCSD continues to run an extremely lean administration, with admin costs per student that are one-half that of LPS or Cherry Creek and one-third that of Denver Public Schools. Unlike the other property tax increases we’ve all experienced in DougCo since 2019, every single penny of MLO revenue will remain with Douglas County schools.

ack Walters wasn’t planning to play college football.

Now, he plays for the

reigning NCAA Division II National Runner-Up, practically down the street from where he grew up.

A three-sport athlete for Golden High School, Walters hoped one of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference universities would recruit him during his senior year. Once Colorado School of Mines reached out and offered him a scholarship, he knew that’s where he belonged.

“Growing up in Golden, Mines is just in our backyard,” Walters said. “ …

I knew I wasn’t going to pass up on it. It’s a great

academic school, and (has) some of the best football in the country.”

Walters is one of about 30 players from the Denver metro area on the Mines football team, helping spur the Orediggers toward their firstever national title.

Because many of them played against each other in high school, the local Orediggers have a unique bond, Walters and Pomona High School graduate Billy Pospisil III described.

The players sometimes dish out good-hearted “smack talk,” they said,

and share stories about opponents or coaches they had in common.

Walters explained how those similar experiences can make things easier when meeting new players on recruiting visits or at camps.

That’s something Valor Christian High School graduates Jackson Zimmerman and Carter Forsythe can attest to. The two played together at VCHS, and when Forsythe visited the Mines campus, Zimmerman — who was a freshman cornerback for the Orediggers — showed him around.

Forsythe, now a redshirt freshman linebacker, said seeing Zimmerman find success at Mines was one of the reasons he decided to join too. Another was the program’s culture, and how similar it was to Valor Christian’s, he continued, adding how there are now six VCHS alumni among the Orediggers.

“Mines’ culture is already so fantastic,” Forsythe said, “… (and) Jackson made it an easy decision.”

Another benefit of playing so close to home, they described, was how frequently they get to see their loved ones at the games. They said their family members, former teammates and coaches, family friends and others from the Valor Christian community show up to support them at the games.

Pospisil, who played wide receiver at Washington State University and grad-transferred to Mines in fall 2022, commented how grateful he was to be back home. He believed attending a local college was “underrated,” and that some high school students might overlook it as an option.

“But, coming back after being away, there’s really not much that beats it,” Pospisil continued. “ … It’s been a great ride ever since.”

Where nerds win

Despite attending different high schools, the four players said their experiences helped prepare them for everything they’d face at Mines.

Walters said Golden’s football team struggled his freshman and sophomore years, but a new head coach and a change in culture propelled the program to new heights.

“It taught us what it was like to be in a winning program,” he continued.

That was something Zimmerman found very early at Valor Christian.

The redshirt sophomore cornerback said he wasn’t planning to play high school football, clarifying that he went to Valor Christian for its academics. But he ended up “falling in love” with the game and the program’s culture.

Despite having six head coaches since starting high school, he said he’s been drawn to programs “where, no matter who the coach is … you’re going to have a great brotherhood around you.”

Zimmerman and Forsythe described how Valor Christian and Mines have similar cultures centered on brotherhood and trust. And for both programs, that’s translated into winning records, Forsythe added.

“Winning isn’t everything,” he continued.

“But it’s definitely a byproduct of the hard work we put in here (at Mines) and the chemistry we have.” #HelluvaEngineer

The Orediggers aren’t just facing tough situations on the field, but in the classroom as well.

The players must learn to balance athletics with their classes in engineering, computer science and similar subjects.

Pospisil, who’s pursuing a master’s degree in environmental engineering science, said the Orediggers face a “truly unique situation” as far as college football goes.

“School is tough, but it’s going to be tough when you’re doing any one of these majors,” Pospisil continued. “But when you’re done,

you’re set up for life. I think in the receiver’s room, the average starting salary in the last five years is close to $100,000 now.”

While Pospisil was unsure if he’d return to Mines next year, Walters plans to use his final year of eligibility in fall 2024 and pursue a master’s degree in engineering & technology management.

Walters is currently studying mechanical engineering, which he said he didn’t know much about when he first started at Mines. But he’s enjoyed becoming a proverbial jack-of-all-trades, studying everything from construction to technology consulting.

“It’s really hard, but I like it,” he said. “ … If I was telling my high school self if I should come to Mines, I’d say do it 100%.”

‘The perfect fit’

While there’s been plenty of adversity to overcome both on and off the field, Walters had no regrets about coming to Mines. He said the university and the football program have taught him “how to grow up.”

“You don’t really know how hard school and football can be,” he said, adding that because of that adversity he’s now forged bonds with his fellow Orediggers that’ll likely endure all their lives.

Those planning to attend college shouldn’t be afraid to stay local, Walters said. While he always wanted to go to an out-of-state college, he described how Mines “is such a special place you can’t get anywhere else in the country.”

Pospisil felt the university deserved more national recognition for its academic prowess.

When he graduated from Washington State with an engineering-related degree, he knew Mines would be the “perfect fit.” “‘Where can I go play some great football and get a great education?’” he continued. “There’s really no better place super close to home.”

Zimmerman and Forsythe both said they were grateful to be able to represent Valor Christian and the Highlands Ranch-Littleton area on the college football stage. The two hoped their families, hometown communities and the Denver area would continue to support them as the Orediggers hope to end 2023 holding a trophy.

“It’s really cool to just see the support,” Zimmerman said, “and see everyone come together in Golden.”

Stephen Sondheim’s operetta, “A Little Night Music,” closed after a full first month into the 2023-2024 season of plays at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. What a joy after the COVID-forced silences!

School safety director leaving Mike Newton instituted big changes during time with Elizabeth

Mike Newton, the Elizabeth School District’s nationally recognized director of safety and security, has recently turned in his resignation. His last day with ESD will be Oct. 20.

Newton and his family moved to Elizabeth before he began working locally because they loved the area.

Newton’s wife, a pediatric nurse who has worked at Elizabeth High School, grew up in nearby Franktown. Newton considers Elizabeth

an awesome community and feels a “sense of camaraderie” here.

When the role then known as “director of safety and emergency planning” was vacated in 2021, friends reached out to Elizabeth School Newton to see District Director of if he was interSafety and Security ested in the job and a shorter Mike Newton.

The timing was right and Newton felt he could make a positive impact.

And a positive impact is what he

made, in the view of area residents who believe his departure will be a considerable loss for this community.

Earlier this year, Campus Safety magazine honored Newton as the Campus Safety Security Director of the Year. The magazine outlined some of Newton’s achievements in Elizabeth.

Newton won about $730,000 in grant money for school safety focused on radio interoperability and school hardening. He’s installed new security cameras, signage and door numbers, and coordinated with local law enforcement for a Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design site survey assessment. Keeping sign and camera installation in-house also saved ESD $44,000.

lets and our health, but Xcel Energy refuses to recognize that. While we start to move on (I just bought electric heaters to save money), Xcel keeps pushing false, dangerous solutions based on gas. Its new hydrogen project, which is explosive, expensive and unhealthy, is another example.

Hydrogen is risky. Studies show that it leaks, ignites and explodes much easier than “natural” methane gas.

Hydrogen leaks form vapor clouds, which ignition plugs can easily ignite.

It can be more than 10 times easier to ignite than gas.

Hydrogen hurts our wallets, too. The only “clean” form of hydrogen for our climate can cost 10 times more than our current gas system, and way more than electricity. Can we afford that right now? If Xcel doesn’t use “clean” hydrogen, it will use fossil fuel hydrogen, which worsens climate change.

What bad option does Xcel intend to choose?

No matter the option, Xcel’s hydrogen will be dangerous for our health.

Burning hydrogen causes more dangerous NOx pollution than methane alone, which is why it’s been condemned by health groups like Physicians for Social Responsibility and the American Medical Association. Yet

David Lewis Parker Vote for new direction

With another DougCo school board election approaching, I ask my community to please educate themselves about the three candidates who stand above the rest of the field: Susan Meek, Brad Geiger, and Valerie Thompson.

As a former teacher, 40-year-plus resident of Douglas County, and someone who has closely watched successful and not-so-impressive school board leadership over the years, I am looking for leaders who are ethical and experienced and who will bring stability to our district.

Valerie Thompson has a research background and two young children in our public schools. She is deeply invested in the success of our district.

I have been impressed with how much these candidates understand our school district’s most critical needs, have ideas on how to address them, care about all students and families, and are dedicated to a nonpartisan approach to leadership.

We are facing a crisis in DCSD. Great teachers, staff, and principals are fleeing to Cherry Creek and Littleton where they can be paid more and teach in an atmosphere of stability and respect from their school boards.

We cannot afford to let our once lauded school district keep deteriorating under the current majority leadership that has violated Colorado Open Meeting Law, opened themselves to expensive lawsuits, and created division. A weak school district hurts all of us. It decreases the desirability to live here and drives down our property values. It leaves us with graduates who are less prepared and competitive. We need smart, experienced, non-partisan leaders who can take our schools in the right direction.

In addition, I can assure you that how I am as a candidate is the same way I plan to behave as a school board member should I be elected in November. I am an open book and will not do whatever it takes to win if winning means lying and hiding my true agenda. Douglas County citizens have already paid the consequences when a school board majority makes decisions out of public view.

I stand behind the belief that democracy flourishes when candidates are held accountable by the press. As a candidate and a leader, I will never hide from that opportunity. Our school board directors should be role models who stand with this community to show our students (your children and your grandchildren) what leadership looks like. Win or lose this election, I will know that I focused my campaign on listening to what DCSD teachers and students need and that I didn’t lose my integrity to further national agendas.

A recent reader wrote reasons for not passing the Douglas County School District’s MLO/bond vote. Citing test scores as being above state average left out one major fact that doesn’t go into test scores and that is social economic background. Being a higher than normal economic area, kids are exposed to more than many low-income families. The family makeup has influence on education and desire to achieve. Schools with low test scores have students whose families are trying to survive even though they want their child to be successful. Test scores do not take into account these factors so why should test scores determine if our low-paid educators should not be on par with other districts. Support them rather than finding excuses why they don’t deserve more funds.

Teachers like me, dedicated to educating America’s future, believe Douglas County School District should be a destination district. We have great students, families, and staff who work tirelessly to provide the best educational opportunities possible.

So why, seven weeks into the school year, do we still have 350+ unfilled positions?

The recent hiring data released by the district gives some insight: we are in the midst of a severe staff shortage, and as we lose staff, we have no one to replace them. Last year, our district experienced 23.3% turnover, and the year before, we experienced 19.2% turnover. Let’s pretend you work in a department of 10 teachers: this means

that last year, the department had to replace approximately three teachers, and the previous year, the department replaced two teachers. That means, in the span of two school years, it’s possible that only half the department was retained.

More goes into an educator’s role than just “teaching.” Schools need teachers to also be coaches, student council advisors, ticket collectors and concession stand workers, dance and overnight field trip chaperones, club sponsors, representatives on district curriculum committees and department liaisons. So, what happens when a department is now operating with almost a 50% turnover in just two years?

Last week, my school had our homecoming and we had zero teachers sign up to help. When I asked why, they said: “I live too far away,” “I’m already involved in so many other things,” “I work my other job on the weekends.” These are all valid reasons to not sign up for an extra duty. But, what happens if our staff turnover rate continues, or when we have no one to chaperone our extracurricular

activities, no one to referee our afterschool games, no one to pick up these outside-of-contract hours duties?

What happens to our kids and families when we have to say, “Sorry, we can’t have a marching band because no one applied?”

Staff retention must be a top priority so that we can continue to provide opportunities for our students to thrive, inside and outside the classroom. We need board of education members who understand our community, are versed in district policy, and can provide solutions before it’s too late. We need board members teachers trust and treat as professionals. Therefore, this November, I will be voting for Meek, Geiger and Thompson for Douglas County School Board.

The county commissioners have been discussing reducing the property tax rate — which would give real relief. Whatever is decided it needs to be done carefully. I don’t want to be gouged for what I can’t afford due to unrealistic home value that I would not be able to sell my house for — but I don’t want the value manipulated or cause underfunding for essential services either.

The short version — vote no on Prop HH. If you are not aware, please look up the details for yourself. I don’t think you’ll like them ...

Vote no on Prop HH or kiss that $750 tax refund you got last year goodbye — and also the future refunds to which you are entitled. This sneaky proposition on your ballot for the Nov. 7 election is the classic bait and switch. The Democrat-controlled legislature knows we’re all freaking out over this year’s astronomical property tax assessments which will result in astronomical property tax increases even as the cost of everything we eat and buy and the gas our cars run on is also going inter-galactic. So our rulers placed on the ballot this deceptive proposition that will trim a sliver off your property taxes for a few years in exchange for ending forever your TABOR (Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights) tax refunds; a nice $750 check last year for single taxpayers and $1,500 for joint filers (this year it will likely be more).

Renters suffer too — they don’t pay property taxes but the State will keep their tax refunds anyway.

If that sounds like a bad trade —

it is. Do not be fooled by the ballot proposition’s happy talk wording which completely omits the obliteration of your tax refunds and instead tosses you this lovely bouquet, “Shall the state reduce property taxes for homes and businesses …” How can the state government leave out the reality that HH would steal your tax refunds forever, you ask? Well, who do you think wrote that language?

The government! The State Ballot Information Booklet (Blue Book) you got in the mail has the same shifty authors. It’s got 12 mind-numbing pages of graphs and charts and mathy hocus-pocus that hide and confuse the whole point of HH, which is to increase the tax limit the State can spend by reducing your tax refunds.

In 2023-24 the state keeps $170 million more of your money, and their pot of your gold grows to $2.2 billion by fiscal year 2031-32 (p.10) and to nearly $200 billion over three decades according to the Independence Institute Fiscal Policy Center.

Of course you won’t find that staggering number in the Blue Book. The worst part: if HH passes, the state legislature can keep on keeping your tax refunds forever “without additional voter approval” (p.12) Proposition HH is a scam, a con, a hoax, a steal. Just vote no.

ment, greedy corporate takeover that is coming for our beautiful county — all as a part of the highly subsidized “Green New Deal.”

Many of our citizens have been fighting for the soul of our county, trying to stop Xcel Energy from placing part of its 610 miles of highvoltage transmission line, over 140 feet tall, right through the heart of Elbert County. Xcel has identified its preferred pathway for their Power Pathways project, right through the wildlife haven of the Bijou Basin and through residential properties.

These high-voltage lines, which emit dangerous electric and magnetic fields (EMFs), can be placed within 75 feet from people’s homes.

This particular project offers no benefits to Elbert County Citizens whatsoever. The power that will flow through the lines above the homes of our neighbors goes straight to Denver.

Property values for those near the power lines will also plummet by as much as 45%. That means homes will be worth just over half of what they are worth now and many will be upside down on their mortgages.

If you think this really won’t affect you — Think again! The decrease in property values will be directly responsible for a decrease in funding for our schools, police, fire department, etc. If this project comes through the heart of Elbert County, with no financial gain being given

Xcel first proposed five different routes. One of these routes goes through the eastern part of the county, away from multiple residences and all of the trees and tinder which could result in a massive wildfire caused by these lines. (The deadly Marshall Fire was caused by high winds and an unmoored Xcel power line.)

There are also easements along Highway 287, I-70, and the railroad which can and should be used for this project — but it costs more so Xcel has not been willing to consider this route.

“Scenic Highway” is the sign I pass when on I-70 exiting to Highway 86 west, but if Xcel Energy gets their way, this sign will be torn down. Xcel Energy, which made $8.351 billion dollars as of June 2023, would like to capitalize on the pristine shortcut Highway 86 creates to build their Segment 5 of the Power Pathway project that is designed to bring more electricity to the power-hungry cities in the Denver metro area.

This project will provide zero benefits to Elbert County, but offers a significant number of deficits like: • Unsightly towers blocking the gorgeous views as one drives over this highway • Decrease in property values by up to 45% which will, in turn, reduce funding for schools.

• Increase in fire risk, which will

also increase homeowner’s insurance.

• Negative impacts on wildlife as lines change migration patterns and limit the Bijou Basin as the best source of their water for this part of the plains.

• The subsequent wind/solar farms which are planned along this route.

Remind Xcel of the following requirement from Elbert County’s 1041 Regulations: “For new transmission lines and wind energy generation facilities and turbine instillations, existing easements shall be used to the extent possible and expansion of existing easements is preferable to acquiring new easements.” Ask them why a company that is making so much money is unwilling to spend additional funds to route this line along existing corridors.

in place. So much of safety and security is reactive, and Newton recognized the need for more proactive measures that would offer prevention and intervention before things escalate or an incident takes place.

Newton said this concept is called “Left of Bang,” an idea taken from the United States Marine Corps Combat Hunter program. It means taking a proactive approach to possible threats by making an observation and intuitionbased to prevent the bad from happening.

Newton says he will miss being part of a smaller community and school district. Here in Elizabeth, it’s easier to have close partnerships with community stakeholders. He is proud of building successful partnerships with school administrators and local emergency response agencies. They’ve collaborated with Newton to drive safety and security as a culture and he’s on a first-name basis with many of them. Newton has worked closely with the Elizabeth Police

Team effort

The safety and security of our schools became not just his concern but everyone’s concern. In the Elbert County News he emphasized that any successes are a team effort and “a direct reflection of the amazing students, staff, and community of the Elizabeth School District.”

The community is quick to return the praise.

TJ Steck, chief of the Elizabeth Fire Department, said: “We really enjoyed Mike’s dedication to all aspects of safety in the schools and we are grateful for the advances he made during his time at ESD. We will be sorry to see him go but we wish him the best.”

The chief of the Elizabeth Police Department, Jeff Engel, remarked: “While having worked with Mike for a short period of time, it was immediately clear his passion for school safety and the well-being of every student in the Elbert County School District. Mike was driven to be the model of school safety, and in a short period of time he made significant accomplishments to be that model.

“Mike was always available. No matter day or night Mike would lend a helping hand. Mike also listened intently.

He would listen to both sides of an issue and would strive to find common ground. Mike has left a lasting legacy at the Elizabeth School District.”

Elizabeth High School Principal Bret McClendon added that “Mike has brought a standard of professionalism in school safety and security that is second to none.”

Brett Michels, the principal at Elizabeth Middle School, also had kind words: “Mr. Newton has been a great asset for our district and our school. He has implemented best practice systems within our daily routine that greatly enhance the safety of our staff and students. He is regularly present in our buildings, and always willing to step in and help in a hands-on manner. While his loss in our district will be difficult initially, the impact he’s had on district and school security will be felt for a very long time.”

Passion and vigilance

Newton won’t miss the mental weight that came with his role in ESD. In the back of his mind, he was “constantly

thinking that today could be the day something happens.” His passion and attentiveness for student safety has been clear. His vigilance boiled down to two questions, “What can I do better?” and “How can I protect our kids?”

Students, staff, and community have always been Newton’s motivation. “At the end of the day,” he said, “I’m here for the kids, I’m here for the community, and that was my driving factor day-in and day-out.”

Newton is moving into a job with Convergint Technologies, where he will “focus on helping Colorado K-12 school districts select, design, and procure school, safety, and security equipment to build out a unified security system.”

Working to improve safety and security in K-12 environments is still Newton’s passion. In his new role, his sphere of influence can expand and grow. He’ll be able to help multiple school districts and make a difference on a national level.

The Newton family plans to remain part of the Elizabeth community for the foreseeable future. ESD is a Convergint customer and through that partnership, Newton will still be able to help the district propel its physical security efforts forward.
