Voters meet ESD board candidates Two newcomers, four incumbents are running for four seats BY NICKY QUINBY SPECIAL TO COLORADO COMMUNITY MEDIA

Four of the five Elizabeth School Board seats are up for election this November, and all six candidates were present to answer questions at the Oct. 11 Candidate Forum in the Elizabeth High School cafeteria. Four incumbent board members — Mike Calahan, Rhonda Olsen, Mary Powell and Jonathan Waller — are running as the “Kids First” slate, and there are two newcomers to the race, Roxanne Aviles and Dan Dahring. Though the incumbent group is running as a slate, constituents are free to vote for any and do not have to vote for all. Initially, only about 27 community members showed up but people came and went as the night went on. Rather than a traditional forum setup, the event was more of an informal, roundtable discussion. Uncertain at first, attendees eventually milled around from table to table, engaging directly with candidates or jumping in on existing conversations. Olsen, the current board president, was appointed in 2021 under

the previous board. Calahan, Powell and Waller were all appointed this year after a mass resignation by three board members — Craig Blackham, Vice President Kim Frumveller and President Cary Karcher. After these resignations, remain-
