The Elizabeth High School chapter of the student group FCCLA — Family, Community and Career Leaders of America — hosted the seventh annual Hunter’s Legacy basketball tournament on March 11. The event raised more than $4,000 of its $6,000 goal, and the money will go toward alleviating the devastation of the 2021-2022 Boulder County fires.

A hotly debated commercial and residential development in Elizabeth broke ground in late 2021 and is now in full swing. Land is being prepared for new roads, housing and retail space. Big-name international, national and regional businesses will be making their way into the area within the next couple of years.

The development often referred to as “West Elizabeth” will include an extended Wild Pointe Ranch Marketplace. Retail businesses moving into the area includes a McDonald’s at the corner of Highway 86 and Legacy Circle, as well as Anna’s Car & Dog Wash between Auto Zone and Murphy Oil. Recently, Trevey Commercial Real Estate announced that a Ziggi’s Coffee would be coming to Elizabeth as well.

MJM Consulting is the new franchise owner for Ziggi’s Coffee.

The EHS gym was crammed with spectators and participants as 15 teams competed in a double-elimination basketball tournament.

Teams were self-organized, mostly consisting of Elizabeth High School students. However, anyone could participate. Some teams were comprised of adults and middle school students.

Many teams were also coed.

Of the 15 teams, the Brick Layers came out on top. The winning team took home a basketball signed by the event volunteers as well as gift cards for Sonic Drive-In. “The event was very successful.

Though we didn’t reach our fundraising goal, people were having a lot of fun and they were enjoying themselves,” said FCCLA President Shandie Schubauer. “It was my first year organizing an event of this scale. FCCLA was very coordinated this year and we had so many great hands on deck.”

year because of COVID-19, but was back this year as FCCLA hopes to continue the Hunter’s Legacy charity basketball tournament for the foreseeable future.

FCCLA First Vice President Liv O’Neal addressed the audience prior to the start of the tournament. She shared a piece of writing by Neelley to help share his legacy.

During her reading, O’Neal began to cry, taking several pauses throughout.

“I never met Hunter personally,” said O’Neal in a short text interview after the tournament. “But our families, especially our moms, have always been close friends. I’ve always had an amazing relationship with his mom. It was an extremely emotional thing for me to get up there and be one of the people letting him know that we still think of him and that we’ll always love him.”

Neelley’s written piece, “3 Things I’m Thankful For,” reads as follows: I am thankful for many things, but there are three things that I’m most thankful for. I’m thankful for moving to Elizabeth, my brother, and getting cancer.

The art of restoring vintage luxury and sports cars Farland Classic Restoration still going after 30 years

Although it’s not the usual kind of car the business works on, the story behind a 1952 Hudson Hornet compelled the folks at Farland Classic Restoration to take on the challenge of returning it to its former glory.

“Sometimes we do those kind of cars,” said company owner Jack Farland. “We call it sentimental

motors. You know, people are in love with some car for some reason and want to bring it back to original.”

In this case, in the early 1960s, the owner of the Hudson, his six siblings and their parents used to travel all over the country together in that car, Farland said.

Farland Classic Restoration, located for over 30 years in Englewood, restores vintage luxury automobiles and sports cars. With 20 employees, the 15,000-square-foot shop is one of the larger restoration businesses in the country, Farland said.

Maseratis, Porsches — some now worth millions — that have gone onto win awards at Pebble Beach and Amelia Island’s premier car competitions.

The company also buys and sells cars. Last year, it sold 44 classic cars from its 5,000-square-foot showroom down the street. Car sales create more gross income for the business than the shop by “a fair amount,” Farland said. Although restorations are roughly 90% of what they do, margins are slim on that side of operation.

said. “You turn it on and the dollar signs, they’re just rotating like a slot machine. It’s crazy.”

So managing the money is key.

“I don’t care what business,” Farland said. “You have to do a good job with the finances, or you can’t stay in business. Probably more important today than ever because everything’s so tight. Costs go up so fast.”

Farland Classic Restoration developed a system that works well for them. A customer’s money for the project is placed in an account upfront. Then Farland technicians closely track what they do and bill the account on a regular basis.

As the caretakers of vintage cars, Farland Classic Restoration needs to be familiar with the old, of course, but also the new.

For about the last five years, instead of writing down the work they’ve completed, technicians have used their phones and QR codes to track what work they’ve done on which car.

“All that information goes on to a billing software program … and all the things that are done to that one car then end up on a bill,” Farland said. “Then every week, whatever work was done on that particular car, that much money is taken out of the (customer’s) account.”

No stranger to innovation, the company recently started performing electric conversions, that is, replacing the internal combustion engines of classic cars with electric motors. These cars, such as the 1966 Porsche 912 they’re currently converting, have a very small carbon footprint when the shop’s done with them.

Farland wants to provide an avenue for people who’d like to continue to drive these little pieces of history but in a more modern way.

“That’s our next big thing.”

Mount Evans may be renamed Proposal on table to call it ‘Mount Blue Sky’ BYPAOLOZIALCITA COLORADO PUBLIC RADIO

The years-long push to rename Mount Evans may be nearing its conclusion, as Clear Creek County commissioners have recommended a new name to submit for state and federal review.

Advocates have denounced the mountain’s current name as a reminder of the murder and displacement of Native American tribes in Colorado under territorial governor John Evans, who oversaw the Sand Creek Massacre. In 2020, as Black Lives Matters protests helped fuel a renewed attention on racist symbols within the state, Gov. Jared Polis formed an advisory board that would review and recommend changes to geographic landmarks. Mount Evans was one of the names members of the

board identified as having a problematic history.

The new name for the famous 14er would be Mount Blue Sky, if approved by higher authorities. The proposed name comes from the Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes.

“We propose to rename Mount Evans as Mount Blue Sky as it signifies the Arapaho, [who were known as] the Blue Sky People, and the Cheyenne, who

have an annual ceremony of renewal of life called Blue Sky,” a group of Indigenous people said in their proposal.

Clear Creek County officials have been soliciting feedback from the community for the last several weeks and weighed several options before agreeing on Mount Blue Sky. “Blue Sky is a name that can contribute to the healing and be a unifying name for all of the stakeholders,”

The name proposal has to survive several regulatory steps in order to be finalized. First, the Colorado Geographic Naming Advisory Board has to approve it and send it to Gov. Polis for consideration. If Polis approves, the United State Board of Geographic Names will then make a final decision. While these parties will keep the county’s recommendation in mind, it will also consider four other names for the mountain.

Several geographic landmarks have already been renamed since the state board was formed two years ago, and more continue to be reviewed. Earlier this year, the Department of the Interior proposed new names for 28 Colorado landmarks with an Indigenous slur in their names.

Built to last — are we?

M

any years ago, business author Jim Collins wrote several impactful books on how some of the country’s and world’s most successful businesses have survived, or in some cases, failed. He covered the topics through “Built to Last,” “Good to Great,” and “How the Mighty Fall.”

Each of these books are insightful and FROM THE helpful in looking at the history of how companies like Walmart became empires, EDITOR although Sam Walton’s original vision is far from what the company has become.

Collins’ works also look at failed companies such as Radio Shack and its missteps that led to eventual closures.

If we were to apply Collins’ points in these books to today’s America, and more specifically, here in Denver, I ask the question — Are we built to last?

For a variety of reasons, I would say the Thelma Grimes answer is no.

For now, we will skip the fact that leadership nationwide is faltering and that is not a good character in being a lasting, successful entity.

Instead, I want to look at how we are living as a nation, especially here in Denver. In a recent Facebook post, a friend spoke excitedly about becoming a first-time homeowner.

However, the post was not general merriment as he went on to talk about the monthly mortgage payment for the home he will now be taking on with some stress.

You see, the home was priced way above what it should be. I am not talking a couple thousand dollars either. I am talking $100,000 to $200,000 more than it should be sold. That means a higher mortgage for first-time homeowners who are already a bit stressed before the key unlocked the door.

This is a common problem across the Denver metro area.

Homes are being sold for two to three times what they should be, making the thought of affordable housing more of a punchline than reality.

So, what does that have to do with being built to last? Well, let’s look at this young family. They wanted to buy this home and stay in the place they grew up, near family.

However, what about the young families with no strong ties to our community? Do you really think young, educated families will want to stay here if they cannot make enough money to afford a house? If they cannot earn a living wage and actually live comfortably?

Ultimately, they will leave and seek more affordable options in a city either starting to grow, or one that is making it possible for young families to have a shot.

The loss, in the end, is ours. We are going to start losing young families and students graduating from college and entering the workforce. These young families and minds are the ones who establish our future.

They bring fresh ideas to our companies. They bring money to our economy as they spend at retail store and restaurants. They spend money to take part in community entertainment and events.

However, if all their money is going towards ridiculous mortgage payments, continually increasing utilities and HOA fees — will they stay here? Will we be able to keep great minds and citizens here?

Our markets are not built to last if we make it too hard for young professionals to even get started in the first place.

Instead we are heading toward a more realistic narrative of how the mighty fall.

All the good you can do

ast weekend I had an opportunity to enjoy a couple of beers with Brian, a very good and close friend of mine. On the day we had met, we were experiencing one of those crazy weather weekends where the temperature was in the mid 60s the day before, and then snowing the very next day. I was already there when Brian walked in, and as he walked in, we were talking about how crazy it was out there.

And although the weather was indeed a bit strange, we quickly realized we were talking about all the other crazy things that are going on in the world. And that led us into a discussion around what we could do as individuals to help in any way that we could. What could we do as a family to help? And what can we do as a community if we really rallied all those who give of their time, resources, and talents?

A song by Jana Stanfield came to my mind, “All the Good I Can Do.” The lyric that I thought of reads, “I cannot do all the good that the world needs but the world needs all the good I can do.”

With our attention focused on the war in Ukraine and in other on war-torn countries elsewhere, many are wondering what they can do to help. Rising supplier costs lead to rising consumer prices and that means many people are making decisions about what they can afford and what they have to do without, and again, raising the question of what we can do to help.

As we look around there are plenty of opportunities where our generosity of time, resources and talents can be applied. So, what we mustn’t do, is to get so caught up in the things that we cannot do or control, and rather focus on all the things that we can do. And whether that is on a grand scale or the tiniest little thing that can make a difference, we must do what the song encourages, because the world does need all the good we can do.

There are food pantries with empty shelves.

Local churches have a food pantry, or they support one, so that is a good place to start. Soup kitchens, food kitchens and meal centers are also a great place to donate food or volunteer

to serve. Finding the closest homeless center or rescue mission is another excellent place to start as they can always use funding, or they can let us know what they need in the way of donations.

As the war rages on in Ukraine, there are many places that are taking donations in the form of clothing, blankets, health and hygiene Michael Norton products, and other goods that can possibly help those who have been displaced. And again, financial donations to the Red Cross or other charities that step in to help victims, refugees, and those left homeless by the war.

Sometimes when there are major events happening in our country or around the world, we can suffer from a sense of feeling numb or paralyzed, and we become so fixated on those bigger problems that we forget about the causes that are important to us and that need our help in any way that we can possibly provide.

Now is the time to rise to the occasion and step up to help out, and step in with our time, resources, and talents. Even forgetting the wars taking place and the pandemics, hunger, lack of shelter and clothing, poor health, joblessness, and sudden loss of life leaving family members without the means to live as they once did all create opportunities for us to do all the good that we can do.

Construction for the new coffee shop will begin spring 2022. The lot sold for $350,000.

The area will also see extended roadway and infrastructure for the West of Wild Pointe Ranch Marketplace. In an interview from September 2021, Mitch Trevey and Nick Beach of Trevey Commercial Real Estate indicated that Beverly Street will be extended past the Elizabeth Library to connect to Legacy Circle near Walmart.

In addition to the new commercial and retail spaces at Wild Pointe Ranch Marketplace, the area will see the addition of a more developed “Elizabeth West.” Elizabeth West will extend from the new development behind the Walmart to Country Road 3. Construction has not yet started for Elizabeth West though it is slated to begin this spring.

Though local opinion on the expansive development has been mixed, a recent point of distress for some longtime residents is the removal of Gold Creek Ranch on the property. Existing structures and trees will be removed to accommodate the new development.

“I worked the Gold Creek Ranch when I was a kid from 1990 to around 2007. I helped Mike (Woodard, the owner) out all the time.

I used to bale hay, run the stack wagon, deliver hay and work the cattle. I loved fishing at the pond,” said Jeremy Phillips, Elizabeth local. “This is sad to see. I helped build this house and to see it just be

torn down is terrible.”

Some residents hope that the main structure will be preserved.

However, according to Pat Gonzales, Town of Elizabeth Community Development administrative assistant, the structure is in disrepair and to her knowledge will be removed. In a short phone interview with Tim Craft, developer for Legacy Village, he said the structure is a safety concern and a liability given its state of disrepair.

He confirmed that the structure will be torn down.

etiana Doiun was watching movies with her husband at home in Highlands Ranch when Russia’s president began an invasion in Ukraine last month.

Without skipping a beat, Doiun called her elderly mother and aunt, who live together in Dnipro, a city in central Ukraine. When her mother finally answered the phone, it was about 6 a.m. there and she was shocked to hear that the war had begun.

Doiun’s mother and aunt are not planning to flee because both are in their 70s and have health issues. They would struggle to carry luggage and don’t want to leave their cats behind.

Dnipro has not yet suffered from the harshest attacks by Russia. However, on Sunday, Ukraine’s top security official said the Russian army is planning to encircle the city, as it works to cut off access to the southern Black and Azov seas and capture the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, about 300 miles from Dnipro.

Each night before going to sleep, Doiun calls her mother and aunt to ensure they’re still alive. “It feels like the worst days of my life,” she said. “I feel ashamed, honestly, to complain because I can’t imagine how my loved ones and everyone else in Ukraine feels.”

Pockets of reprieve Since Feb. 24, Russian forces have attacked Ukraine from the north, east and south, with focus on cities like

Kyiv, Kharkiv and the port city Mariupol. As the world condemns Russian President Vladimir Putin for starting the war, and as officials continue imposing hefty sanctions on Russian businesses and oligarchs, Putin is doubling down by targeting Ukrainian civilians trying to escape the conflict zone. The invasion has created the worst refugee crisis in Europe since World War II and has united the world in solidarity against Putin and in support of Ukraine.

But even amid world condemnation, Ukrainians in Colorado are still feeling helpless and isolated as they watch their country’s infrastructure being destroyed each day. They’re trying to follow the movements of their loved ones amid spotty cell service and bombing in different regions, and they’re keeping tabs on their friends’ and families’ safety from afar as the world tries to make sense of a yearslong conflict that came to a head last month.

“I’m just in so much pain and feeling hopeless. That’s the worst pain I feel like there is,” said Tatiana Christofferson, who lives in Boulder. “I think of me helping, as speaking out for them,” she said of people still living in Ukraine, as she began to cry.

Ukrainians in Colorado said even amid the devastation, they find pockets of reprieve when they’re able to contact friends and family stuck in the war zone.

When family members support the invasion However, lately conversations between Christofferson and her father are brief. Her father, who lives in Donetsk, part of the disputed Donbas region, supports Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Parts of Donbas are controlled by pro-Russian separatist

groups, and there is often intense fighting in the region.

Christofferson, who was estranged from her father, met him five years ago after 25 years apart. She fears they might again lose contact over their opposing beliefs about Russia, she said.

“Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but my dad does not let me speak of mine in front of him,” she said in a tearful interview.

Oleg Soloviov, a student studying political science and economics at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, said his grandparents, who live in Moldova, share a similar viewpoint and also side with Russia and support reuniting the former Soviet Union, which collapsed in 1991.

Oleg Soloviov, a student at Colorado State University, said his parents were in Moldova when Russia invaded Ukraine in late February. They consider themselves lucky that they were not able to return home to Ukraine.

“I don’t think they actually see what Russia is doing,” he said. “The only thing they hear from is Russian news, and I believe that’s a big reason why they support it. It’s upsetting and I feel powerless because I can’t really do much.”

He’s considered returning to Ukraine since the war started to volunteer or even fight alongside fellow Ukrainians.

If his family finds themselves in danger, that would be the deciding factor.

“I wouldn’t just sit here,” he said. “I would just go at that point.”

Taras Overchuk, who has family in Ukraine, spoke from Denver International Airport on Friday as he waited to board a flight to Poland. He planned to buy an old car there before driving to Lviv in western Ukraine. He decided to return to Ukraine because he couldn’t bear watching the war unfold while his family members bore the brunt of it and while his brother is fighting with the Ukrainian army.

Overchuk plans to spend a few weeks in Ukraine identifying areas most in need of foreign aid. He will soon report those findings back to the local group, Ukrainians of Colorado, which is offering a support group for Ukrainians in the state, while collecting medical supplies to send to Ukraine.

“The situation changes really regularly, so in order to be effective you need to understand every day, what is going on,” Overchuk said Friday.

It took 12 hours for him to cross the border between Ukraine and Poland this weekend, as he and thousands of others waited there in the snow. He has tried to persuade his family members to evacuate, but they will not leave Ukraine.

Refusing to leave “People are really patriotic there, and when you leave and flee, you’ve worked so hard to prove to the rest of the world and to Russia that you can be a successful country with an economy and educated people,” said Lisa Savchenko Ripa, who lives in Highlands Ranch and has family across Ukraine and Russia. “Fleeing is kind of giving up all of those things.”

leave Ukraine. Petraglia’s father would likely be recruited to fight alongside the Ukrainian army if he tried to leave PRESENTS: the country, but he is too ill to fight, Petraglia said.

Petraglia feels a sense of relief — for now — that her family is relatively safe. “But who knows when Russia is going to reach there,” she said of Ternopil.

A bomb recently destroyed the preA NIGHT IN school where Petraglia’s mother was working, so she has no job to return to after the war ends. Photos show that about 75% of the homes belonging to Petraglia’s loved ones in Kharkiv, the second largest city in Ukraine, have also been destroyed. There’s often no internet service or electricity there, even as temperatures dip below freezing at night, she said.

“My city doesn’t exist anymore,” Petraglia said. “They’ve bombed almost each civilian building. Every other building has a bomb in it. They’re doing everything for Kharkiv to disappear.”

What helps her feel less lonely is being able to help friends and family navigate their way out of their towns �she � said. � Her � �loved � ones � � � � � � � � � � � � � � � � � under siege, trying to escape are not able to think clearly while in shock, so Petraglia is offering encouragement while providing literal directions.

the trek to Poland, where colleagues driving in from Kosovo will pick him up and then they all will travel to Lviv.

The small group is taking $20,000 in cash and medical supplies, such as heavy-duty gauze bandages, that they’ll distribute when they reach Ukraine. They’ll focus on supporting single women whose husbands are fighting in the war and children, Mares said.

“This small amount of money and this small amount of material won’t last long,” he said. “It won’t be hard to find deserving targets.”

Vlada Petraglia was at a Ukrainian Catholic Church in Denver on Monday afternoon, offering advice to Mares before his trip and connecting him with Ukrainians on the ground who could use the organization’s help. People in the army are most in need of warm clothes, portable chargers and money, she said.

A few days ago, Petraglia’s parents had left their devastated city, Kharkiv, as Russia escalated attacks on residents there. Petraglia’s family finally made their way to Ternopil, in western Ukraine. The drive would normally take about 13 hours, but as many people evacuated alongside her family, it took about three days before they reached safety. As they drove, Petraglia’s family feared bullets, or a bomb, would hit their car.

Until then, Petraglia’s family had been taking cover in a bomb shelter, only visiting their nearby apartment to feed their cat. The family won’t

Russian warplanes. Western leaders have firmly rejected the request, fearing it would lead to conflict between U.S. and Russian fighter jets, which could create an even more catastrophic conflict, or World War III. “If the world does not get involved, Putin will take the countries surrounding Ukraine, because he’ll feel no one has enough power to stop him,” Petraglia said.

“If Ukraine loses, it will be dangerous to everybody,” she continued.

“I’m not feeling safe in Colorado.

I’m all the time telling my husband to look and see how far bunkers in Colorado are and where they are on the map because (Putin) is insane.

And if you’re thinking that it’s a war between Ukraine and Russia, it’s not anymore.”

U.S. Rep. Jason Crow discussed the war with the Colorado Sun on Thursday. The Centennial Democrat, who is a member of the House Armed Services and House Intelligence Committees, said many are calling on the U.S. to move from imposing sanctions to a more aggressive boots-on-theground approach. But the threat of a nuclear conflict with Russia makes that unlikely.

Putin has dreamed about recreating the Soviet Union and its sphere of influence since its collapse in 1991, Crow said. Annexing Ukraine is the most important step to rebuilding that empire, Putin believes, and now he’s using force to absorb Ukraine, which he considers Russian, Crow said.

Now, Ukrainians in Colorado are doing whatever they can from afar.

Soloviov, the student at Colorado State, said he already had plans to become a diplomat or ambassador to Europe.

“Now with the war going on, I want to do it even more, because clearly, we didn’t work hard enough and fast enough to make Ukraine a part of the European Union and NATO,” he said. “And now people are having way more struggles and it could have been stopped.”

Doiun gets offended when Americans incorrectly call her country “the Ukraine” or when they pronounce the silent “K” at the front of Kharkiv. But one glimmer of hope during the conflict, she said, is that Americans are becoming more

educated about Ukraine and the aggression it has faced from Russian leaders for years.

The war has challenged every aspect of the life of Victoria Katsuba, a Colorado State student whose family is from Rivne, Ukraine. But the war has made her more proud of being from Ukraine. She said she hopes xenophobia against Russians does not increase, because the war was waged by their leaders, not Russian civilians.

“It’s complex, and I think when people lose their humanity and just focus on one thing besides focusing on a lot of perspectives, it gets hard,” she said. “A lot of things can happen at the same time. Just being knowledgeable and doing your research and doing better for your community, I think, is going to be a step up.”
