The meeting was led by the local Ullom family, those proposing the multi-use facility. The development is intended for 9889 County Road 134, at the western corner of the intersection of Highway 86 and County Road 134. Their goal for the meeting was to gain community input and field any questions that locals had about the development.

Triple Bypass bike ride rolls again

For a cyclist, few things in life are more enjoyable than an epic ride over great terrain.

But an epic ride over great terrain with ample support staff, feed stations and 4,999 riding buddies would probably qualify.

That was certainly the case according to Ken Reardon of Fort Collins, who said he’d done the Triple Bypass before, “but not in a long time.”

“I ride competitively, but with organized races being weird the last two years ... I just wanted a nice, fun ride.”

Though, he admitted that he would still be checking his road times.

The Triple Bypass —a classic “bucket list” item for many cyclists and a bragging point for its veterans — is named for the three passes along the course, which winds from Buchanan Park in Evergreen over Juniper Pass (11,140 feet elevation), down through Idaho Springs and then up along the banks of Clear Creek and eventually over Loveland Pass (11,990 feet), wending past Keystone and Frisco before heading over Vail Pass (10,560 feet) and then down to the finish line in the town of Vail.

This year’s race featured a “double bypass” option, starting in Georgetown and just going over Loveland and Vail passes. Most of the course is either on closed roads or on multiuse pathways. The event is capped at 5,000 participants. This year, it sold out two months ahead of time.

“We commonly sell out but not that quickly,” said race Operations Director Natalie Raborn.

“I think everyone’s eager to get back to normal life, and this kind of outdoor ride is a relatively safe way to have fun doing it,” she said.

New this year was the Gran Fondo competition.The 750 participants were given timing chips and were specifically timed on the climbing segments over all three of the passes, with prizes and glory awaiting the riders with the top times.

The charitable cycling organization Team Evergreen puts on the annual ride, which was canceled last year. Other community organizations help supply the roughly 500 volunteers needed to make the ride happen. In return, Team Evergreen donates part of the proceeds to the participating organizations.

Dawn’s early glow illuminated an upbeat vibe at the Evergreen start line. A “wall of donuts” and coffee awaited riders as they picked up their registration packets and commemorative jerseys. A young man with a drum kit provided a rhythmic soundtrack to riders passing through the start gate. Higher up, a bagpiper performed at the first pass.

Another out-of-stater was Steve Olson from Tucson, Arizona.

‘I’m meeting my nephew and two brothers to do this,” he said.

The Fort Worth cycling team Health’s Angels, six riders strong, participated this year. The team usually participates in the Ride MS fundraising events and actually brags about being a top-fundraising team for its area.

“We were supposed to do (the Triple Bypass) last year for my 50th birthday party,” said team member Wayne McCrow But then the 2020 edition of the race was canceled.

“Longest 50th birthday party ever!” piped in teammate David Baker.

For other riders, the Triple Bypass is closer to home. Rider Kyle Griffith said he’s done the ride four times before. He said the ride is fun, just a good ride for some and competitive for others.

“I kind of love Loveland Pass because it’s pretty much halfway and not that tough.”

His least favorite part?

“On the Double Triple (the unsanctioned add-on to the Triple Bypass where riders do the whole course in reverse the following day), going back over Squaw (Juniper) Pass. ... I’m not doing that this year.

I’ve smartened up over the years.”

Colo. unveils plan to distribute $400M in opioid settlement money Dollars would be split among state and local governments, including Denver and Adams

Roughly $400 million in settlement money expected to be secured

by Colorado from drug companies sued for their alleged role in the opioid epidemic would be split between state and local governments under a tentative deal unveiled Aug. 26 that calls for the money to be spent on building treatment facilities and bolstering prevention and education programs.

The agreement, structured as a memorandum of understanding, still needs the approval of local governments to move forward, but it has the support of Attorney General Phil Weiser and top officials from Denver, Adams, Logan and Pueblo counties, which were hit hard by the opioid crisis.

The deal would break up the state into 19 regions, to which 60% of the settlement money would go.

The regions will have their own governing councils made up of local public officials to oversee the local distribution of funds.

Local governments would receive 20% of the settlement money, while 10% would go toward building drug treatment facilities. The remaining 10% would be managed by the attorney general’s office, which would use the dollars to create statewide strategies to deal with the opioid crisis, such as prevention and education programs.

The framework also calls for an oversight board made up of six members appointed by Colorado Counties Inc. and the Colorado Municipal League, six members appointed by the attorney general and one nonvoting chairperson.

The money Colorado expects to receive from opioid settlements is made up of $300 million from Johnson & Johnson along with three major drug distributors, Cardinal Health, McKesson and AmerisourceBergen.

At least another $50 million is expected from Purdue Pharma, the creator of OxyContin, and from members of the Sackler family who owned the pharmaceutical giant. Mallinckrodt, another opioid maker, is expected to pay $25 million and $10 million likely will come from McKinsey & Company, a consulting firm that advised Purdue Pharma.

Weiser said the state could get additional money from other settlements, and the agreement provides a guide for how to spend future money.

Weiser announced the deal at a news conference in Denver, where he signed the agreement and urged local governments to also sign on to the plan.

He was joined by a cadre of local government officials, including Denver Mayor Michael Hancock, Logan County Commissioner Byron Pelton and Pueblo County Commissioner Garrison Ortiz.

The opioid crisis “started in the boardroom,” Weiser said, with executives who wanted to “make as much money pushing out these drugs, which were highly addictive.

“It’s time to hold them accountable,” he said.

Hancock said local governments have spent millions of dollars dealing with the consequences of the epidemic, which has devastated families and led to otherwise healthy people “walking our streets like zombies.”

Family remembers Dustin Wakefield as loving, compasssionate Castle Rock resident, 21, killed while on vacation in Florida

Lora Wakefield said her son, Dustin Wakefield, taught her more in life than she ever taught him.

Family and friends remember 21-year-old Dustin as loving, compassionate and caring.

Dustin, of Castle Rock, was killed on Aug. 24, shot while defending his 1-year-old son from a man with a gun at a Miami Beach restaurant.

“He was the brightest light I have ever known even as a mom,” Lora said. “He made friends with all that he met and made all feel seen and heard. He mostly wanted his wife to know she is his queen and made her feel like the most beautiful woman in the room.”

Dustin only wanted the best for his family and would work hard for them, Lora added. “(Dustin) loved in the most purest way,” Lora said. “As a mom, I can honestly say he taught me more than I taught him. He was a kiss from heaven to me.”

Lora said she wants to carry on Dustin’s legacy to love and be caring. Dustin would want others to truly love, she said.

Tamarius Blair Davis Jr., 22, has been charged with seconddegree murder and attempted second-degree murder following the death of Dustin Wakefield, a 21-year-old Castle Rock father.

Wakefield was on vacation with his family in Florida when Davis allegedly shot him around 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 24.

Police and family members say Wakefield died while protecting his 1-year-old son. According to the affidavit provided by the Miami Police Department, Davis, suspected of being high on mushrooms, went into the restaurant, La Cerveceria, and picked Wakefield at random.

Following the shooting, a video shows Davis dancing outside of the restaurant. He then ran into a nearby alley got down on the pavement, following police commands. As police handcuffed Davis, he could be heard saying, “I did it. I did it.”

After being taken into custody, Miami police said, Davis waived his constitutional rights and confessed to shooting Wakefield and shooting at another bystander who was not injured.

“The defendant stated he was high on mushrooms, which made him feel empowered,” the police report said. “The defendant continued by saying he randomly chose two men to shoot at.”

On Aug. 25, during his initial court appearance, Davis asked Judge Mindy Glazer, of the Florida 11th Circuit Court, about bond. Judge Glazer replied, “There is no bond. You shot and killed someone in cold blood.”

As the new delta variant of COVID spreads, hospitals and emergency rooms along the Front Range say they are seeing more patients but are not yet overwhelmed.

According to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, as of Aug. 20, ICU beds went from 72% to 80% occupancy over the preceding month. In the Denver metro area, hospital officials say they are handling the uptick well but remain concerned as the new COVID variant is a lot more transmissible.

According to UCHealth, after a steady decrease of COVID patients between April and mid-July, cases are steadily rising with more than 200 patients with confirmed or suspected COVID infections being admitted into UCHealth hospitals in Douglas and Adams counties.

Dr. Ben Usatch, emergency medicine physician and medical director of the UCHealth Highlands Ranch Hospital Emergency Department, said along with the increasing number of patients, frustration among health-care providers is rising.

Usatch said the difference between vaccinated patients with break-

through COVID and unvaccinated patients is night and day. Most vaccinated patients come to the ER more out of fear and are quickly released, Usatch said.

“Really, we are seeing two flavors of COVID patients,” he said. “The vaccinated have a runny nose, maybe a slight fever and headache.

The unvaccinated are ending up in the ICU and deteriorating quickly.

The vaccine really does protect from serious disease. It is heart wrenching.”

Usatch said besides the delta variant being a lot more contagious, a big change from treating COVID patients from last year is age. Last year, hospitals were treating more patients over 65. This year, most patients coming into emergency rooms are under 50 and unvaccinated, Usatch said.

At Sky Ridge Medical Center in Lone Tree, Chief Medical Officer Eric Lung said they are not overwhelmed with patients, but the HealthOne hospital is seeing a steady increase of COVID cases between the ages of 18 and 50.

“I wouldn’t say we are inundated with patients at this point. We are managing them well,” he said. “The unvaccinated cases we are treating are a bigger concern. They are more contagious and have a lot more symptoms.”

Like Usatch, Lung said it is frustrating to have a vaccine option available but have emergency rooms still filling up with unvaccinated patients.

“The only way out of this pandemic is to get vaccinated,” Lung stressed.

Dr. Katie Sprinkle, an emergency room physician with the Medical Center of Aurora, said it is not about the delta variant, but about treating positive COVID cases.

“The people we are admitting are the unvaccinated,” she said. “In most cases, the breakthrough vaccinated patients are released. Hospitals across the city are going to keep getting full.”

In family medicine, Dr. Anne Jobman, of UCHealth Primary Care in Lone Tree, said general-care physicians have a lot of young adults and children presenting with COVID symptoms.

Jobman said she is recommending a lot of her adult patients go to the ER but children with COVID still seem to be handling the virus well.

“Delta has definitely become the dominant strain in the positive tests we are seeing,” she said. “Child cases are steadily climbing because it is so much more contagious, which is why we are seeing it in unvaccinated and vaccinated patients.

The unvaccinated patients who are under 50 are getting very sick.”

Jobman said vaccinated patients are getting better quickly, as they would with a common cold. Vaccinated patients are rarely being sent to hospitals for elevated treatment, she said.

(CHC), Kevin Carney, associate chief medical officer and pediatrics emergency medicine specialist, said there are a lot more concerns for children under 12 as the delta variant spreads.

With children under 12 still not eligible for the vaccine, Carney said they are more vulnerable for the highly contagious variant, especially with schools across the metro area starting this month.

With CHC facilities in Highland Ranch, Aurora, Centennial, Wheat Ridge, Parker and Broomfield, Carney said officials are not hitting the panic button but remain on alert.

“Our cases in children are still average but above our lower numbers,” Carney said. “We are not overwhelmed but reports are showing cases are creeping up on us. As it continues to spread, we just keep recommending wearing masks, get the vaccine if you are eligible and wash hands and toys regularly.”

Carney said CHC has no doubt that children should be back in school in person, but precautions should be taken, including wearing masks to protect children who cannot yet get vaccinated.

Poor air quality also plays role in ailments

Dr. Eric Lung, chief medical officer at Sky Ridge Medical Center, says poor air quality and an increase in contagious respiratory cases are adding to parent stress as the new delta variant of COVID continues to spread.

Lung said one of the biggest concerns coming out of the hospital’s pediatric unit in Lone Tree is the unseasonably high number of RSV cases this year.

RSV, or respiratory syncytial virus, is a common respiratory virus that causes mild, cold-like symptoms.

While most recover within a week or two, RSV can be serious for infants and older adults. RSV is the most common cause of bronchiolitis and pneumonia in children under a year old.

Symptoms of RSV include runny nose, decrease in appetite, coughing, sneezing, fever and wheezing.

Kevin Carney, a pediatric emergency specialist for Children’s Hospital Colorado, said RSV cases are a lot more common in the winter.

“We really are not sure why this is showing up at such an atypical time,”

Besides RSV, Carney said children are not immune to environmental factors. With poor air quality continuing and a lot of smoke in the air, kids with asthma and respiratory issues have been struggling, he said.

MIS-C is also increasing among children along the Front Range.

MIS-C, or multisystem inflammatory syndrome, is a serious condition associated with COVID-19 where different body parts can become inflamed, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes, or gastrointestinal organs.

Anne Jobman, of UCHealth Primary Care, said the problem with MIS-C is it can present with a variety of symptoms and show up weeks after a child is exposed to COVID. Symptoms of MIS-C can include abnormal gut pain, bloodshot eyes, chest tightness/pain, diarrhea, feeling extra tired, headache, low blood pressure and neck pain.

At such a vulnerable time for children, Carney and Jobman said parents should be overly cautious this year. If a child is having any kind of symptoms, Jobman said parents should call a regular-care doctor and immediately get a COVID test.

Carney and Jobman also agreed that keeping sick children home until they are diagnosed or better is more important now than ever.

Lone Tree resident’s book headed for space

Dow Phumiruk, Lone Tree resident and member of the Lone Tree Arts Commission, has illustrated 15 children’s books including “Counting on Katherine: How Katherine Johnson Saved Apollo 13.”

This book was recently chosen for Storytime From Space — a project of the Global Space Education Foundation that sends children’s books to Phumiruk the International Space Station.

Astronaut Megan McArthur will read the book from space, and a recording will be made available on the Storytime From Space website.

The book details the story of Katherine Johnson, an African American mathematician who worked for NASA during the space race. Her backup procedures and charts helped save the Apollo 13 crew after their mission to the moon was aborted.

“It was the space race at that time, so they’re like `Whoever wants to help us beat everyone else to the moon come sign up.’

And back then, because we didn’t have any real computers like machine computers, they

hired people to do the calculations,” said Phumiruk.

“And men actually thought that that was too boring and too tedious, so they gave it to the women to do. And there were probably about 200 Black women that worked for NASA at the time, which is amazing because we’ve never heard about any of them until recently.”

The original book was published in 2018. A second edition was published in the UK the following year for the 50th anniversary of the moon landing.

Among other awards, the book won The Cook Prize from the Center for Children’s Literature and the UK LA Literary Association Inaugural Information Book Award. Phumiruk also stated that around 100,000 copies have been sold in the U.S. and UK. Phumiruk wasn’t always a professional illustrator. She explained that she enjoyed art as a child, but becoming a stayat-home mom to her daughters from 2002 to 2006 was what led her to pursue art again.

“Being home with the kids, I really had an opportunity to really explore my artistic side, and I realized that that’s such a big part of me. There’s no way I could ever leave that part behind. In fact, it’s taken over,” said Phumiruk.

Phumiruk started learning on her own and researching techniques. In 2011, She joined the Society for Children’s Book Writers.

“That’s where I really took off with my art, because I went to the conferences and got to know some other artists in the neighborhood and had a critique group going, and I got an agent maybe four years after joining that organization,” said Phumiruk.

Phumiruk previously worked as a pediatrician, taught part time at Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine and worked on illustrations. She quickly realized that this was too overwhelming.

Phumiruk said, “I came to a crisis of, I can’t do it all. I can’t raise the children, be a doctor, teach medical school and all that, and I ended up choosing to just teach and do the art.”

She expected to return to pediatrics, but then was picked up by her agent and started working on paying projects.

Phumiruk’s newest book, “Hello, Tree” was written by Ana Crespo, who is also from Colorado. It follows a little girl who finds friendship in a tree during the Black Forest Fire near Colorado Springs that took place in 2013. “Hello, Tree” will be released on Sept.

SAVING COLORADO’S MUSIC HISTORY

A music writer’s online resource captures pop music’s roots

he cardboard storage boxes form a chronological grid, left to right, on an entire basement wall — stacked five tall and 10 across, starting with the 1970s on the top left.

They contain artifacts spanning generations of musical acts: press kits, publicity photos, notes and writings that chronicle an era and chart a collision course with history.

In the last several years they’ve become G. Brown’s creative lodestar. The 67-year-old longtime fixture in Colorado’s music media — he has chronicled the scene both in print and on the radio since his high school days — has channeled his professional life toward preserving and cataloging the state’s pop-music legacy.

“My gift — the luck — was that I was writing for a major daily newspaper, when that meant something,” says Brown, whose work appeared for 26 years in the pages of The Denver Post from 1977 to 2003.

It was a period when a few major record labels ruled pop music, and a vinyl album release — and the attendant buzz over cover art and liner notes — fueled much-anticipated tours and fed a music writer’s hunger for the big interview.

“It’s really hard to think of just how many generations don’t even know about the hard goods, just that idea of someone’s records coming out and caring about the liner notes and all that,” Brown says.

“But that was my life. And I got to see everything.”

Brown’s late-career passion project pours the contents of all those basement boxes, and all that he saw and heard, into a digital platform that didn’t even exist when many of the artists performed at the height of their talents.

In his two-year-old nonprofit, the Colorado Music Experience, he’s building what he envisions as a highly inclusive online historical archive at colomusic.org.

ranged from memorable performances to visits to deep-rooted institutions like the legendary Caribou Ranch in west Boulder County, where many performers sought high-altitude inspiration and round-the-clock access to a recording studio.

Profiles feature stars like Earth, Wind & Fire’s Philip Bailey, a Denver East High alum and one of the many who recorded at Caribou.

Videos celebrate acts like countryrock group Poco, whose musical family tree flourished far and wide.

There’s even an extended nod to early 20th-century artists like Elizabeth Spencer, Colorado icon Glenn Miller and others.

More than two dozen (and counting) podcasts feature superstars like Graham Nash sitting down in a local studio. Overall, the podcasts trace the arc of Brown’s experience writing about not only classic pop performers, but also newer Colorado-centered artists like The Fray and the Lumineers.

The exploration of Brown’s personal archives also gave birth to another, more conventional historical project. He’s already three volumes into an ambitious 21-book series called “On Record,” which eventually will tell the year-by-year story of pop music in America from 1978

to 1998.

Each book features roughly 350 pages of bite-sized historical perspective gleaned from his archival interviews and photos. Though not a Colorado-centric undertaking, proceeds from the books’ sales go back to the nonprofit Colorado Music Experience.

“I’ve got a passion for this stuff,” Brown says. “I did not start it out of spite, or to compete with anyone. But no one’s doing this work, OK? So it’s on me and that’s what I should be doing.”

The gig that catapulted him to prominence and allowed him to accrue decades of pop music history ended abruptly in 2003, when he resigned from the Post in the wake of the discovery that one of his concert previews contained sentences lifted from another article.

That triggered an investigation of his previous year’s work that found 12 more passages from other publications.

Brown maintains his mistakes were unintentional but that he should have been more careful in his writing. He calls the episode “the worst time of my professional life.”

“I read voraciously, everything I could, to be well-informed,” he says. “It bit me in the ass and I got

Brown immediately moved to a radio job at KCUV, a Denver-area progressive rock station where he helped build a small but loyal following. But ownership pulled the plug five years later, citing low ratings and the faltering economy.

Brown shifted his focus to helping launch the Colorado Music Hall of Fame — he served seven years as a founding director — and also drew on his vast inventory of music history to tackle multiple book projects.

All paths ultimately led him toward the Colorado Music Experience.

the Colorado Music Experience not as a website, but as a bricksand-mortar, physical space where patrons could eat and drink while immersed in Colorado music artifacts. He imagined a partnership with a brewery or dispensary or even a coffee shop. “But bottom line, I didn’t want to get into the bar and restaurant business.”

Then a friend asked Brown if he knew how to podcast. For someone who had extensive experience in radio, worked as a tuxedoed ring announcer for pro wrestling in the late 1980s and once hosted a Saturday morning cartoon show as “Uncle G,” podcasts weren’t a big leap.

“So, instead of the bricks and mortar,” he says, “we focused on building that archive of people in Colorado music history who have a story to tell. And it was very liberating to be inclusive instead of exclusive — which is what a Hall of Fame entails. That’s all political — who goes in, who goes out. I want to do things on merit.”

“I spent the last two and a half years just building it up to where I think it’s a pretty compelling, and entertaining, repository for Colorado music history,” Brown says.

“The Colorado Music Experience is one of those passion projects,” says Jon Rizzi, editor of Colorado Avid Golfer and a collaborator with Brown. “And it’s kind of a cliché, but G.’s enthusiasm is totally contagious. Not only is he a very good student of the genres that he covers but he’s also just a fan. He loves music. And you have to love something to really be a connoisseur.”

the western side of the parcel along with a 25-30 space campground along the south side. There will be 3 to 4 tiny homes for nightly rental.”

The flyer added that the facility would offer “hookups at various spaces, a playground, 2 gas fire pits for roasting marshmallows, a grass area for outdoor movies, a playground, and a putt-putt golf course. The building at the northeast corner will be a bath house for a swimming pool to be built as funds allow. The office area may be used for arcade games, foosball, and miscellaneous.”

At the meeting, 30 people were crammed into the community room of the Kiowa Fire building to share their thoughts with the developers.

Of attendees who spoke, support and opposition toward the proposal was roughly evenly split.

Throughout the course of the meeting, several in attendance voiced concerns about the development. They included increased traffic, lack of planned acceleration and deceleration lanes, winter road conditions being dangerous for outof-town travelers, the planned chainlink fence surrounding the property that some called unattractive, sound pollution, and a possible increase in crime.

A group of women at one end of the table were particularly vocal about their concerns regarding crime in the area. “We wanted to move here because we wanted the safety, security, and community,”

said one unnamed woman. “We don’t lock our barns now. Are we going to have to start?”

In contrast, there were plenty of locals who were excited about the potential development. One woman said, “I am a local store owner and I think this would be great for the area. I am very excited about this.”

One parent mentioned, “As a parent of four kids, I’d love to have a pool out here.”

When asked what she hoped the project would bring to the community, Kiowa Outdoor Adventures project manager Debbie Ullom was enthusiastic.

“We hope to see an increase in business for our local merchants and to see people that pass straight

through our county on their travels actually slow down and invest money in it and its proud merchants,” said Ollum. “We also want to see a more positive atmosphere and outlet for our children who are struggling to find anything to do other than chores and trouble as well as a safe and enjoyable place that families can stay to visit that’s not 30-45 minutes away.”

The developers are still compiling information for a formal application with the county. Residents within a quarter-mile radius of the proposed development will receive letters in the mail notifying them of the potential future community hearing.

came together from across the globe to conquer Kilimanjaro, considered to be the highest single free-standing mountain in the world.

Throughout the six-day trek, Hardman and the Curvy Kili Crew hiked more than 45 miles in roughly 40 hours, proving that people in larger bodies can achieve great feats.

At the film screening, Hardman emotionally shared her story with those in attendance, explaining in detail her journey up the mountain, including her triumphs, struggles, and the community she built along the way. The majority of those present were members of Denver’s bodypositive fat community, “Denver Fatties.”

Hardman sat among the small group, teary-eyed with tissues in hand as she relived her hike up Mount Kilimanjaro. She provided insider commentary along with the documentary, describing the scenery, her fellow plus-size hikers, and the exciting milestones she hit along the hike.

Each time she would see herself on screen, Hardman would gleefully shout out: “That’s me!”

Hardman explained different facets of her trip in a Q&A interview with Colorado Community Media.

What was your experience like as a plus-size person hiking one of the world’s tallest mountains?

“It felt powerful and like not a single person could mess with us because we had the power of 19 other fat people standing behind us.”

Did you have any struggles on your hike?

“I got a food/waterborne illness, so that was difficult to deal with.

It was also very hard mentally to breathe at elevation and continue walking hours on end.”

How would you describe the community-building or bonding you did with others on the hike?

“There was not much time to get to know people before having to be completely vulnerable with them during this new physical and emotional experience. We bonded quickly and I especially bonded with my tent mate. She will be my friend forever because of what we went through together.”

What advice do you have for plus-size or fat-identifying people who are nervous to get outside and explore joyful movement?

“Find a current or new friend who is fat and go with them! Fat joy in nature is the best!”

Hardman said she has always been passionate about the outdoors, even prior to her experience hiking Mount Kilimanjaro. In 2018, she and co-founder Arwen Turner created a company called WNDR Outdoors that “strives to increase representation of larger-bodied folks outdoors

by creating technical outdoor apparel in extended sizes and by providing size inclusive events.”

The “Kili Big” documentary recently won Best Jury Documentary at the Bentonville Film Festival, an annual diversity-focused event in Arkansas. The film will also be shown at the Chagrin Documentary Film Festival in Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

Within a day, the local community raised more than $40,000.

Zien said the response from Castle Rock has been amazing.

“So many of us may not know Dustin, but he was a member of our community,” Zien said.

“He is a dad with a young wife and was just starting to make a mark on this world. We are humbled and proud to have people who are so compassionate and loving in Castle Rock.”
