Months of friction between Idaho Springs and Clear Creek School District officials concerning the school district’s proposed bus barn ended when the Planning Commission approved the site’s Final Development Plan.

On Nov. 1 after 20 minutes of discussion, the Idaho Springs Planning Commission unanimously approved the plan to put the bus barn, known as the Transportation and Maintenance Facility or TMF, on the track site just south of the former middle school on Highway 103.

The decision ends a lawsuit that Idaho Springs filed against the school district in August because the city contended the school district hadn’t gotten the proper zoning approvals and permits before site work began. The city said its regulations

Denver’s PlatteForum has more youth internships, will pay them more PlatteForum plans to increase the number of youth it can serve through its ArtLab program. It will go from 40 to 50 interns thanks to a grant from the Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation.

PlatteForum’s ArtLab is an arts-education internship program for high school teens. It encourages them to engage with social issues and to use their voices to create change.

Interns get the chance to work with experienced professional artists on projects that hone their technical, social/emotional, creative, profes-

sional and academic skills. Additional resources available to each intern include private therapy, tutoring, groceries, case management and access to technology.

The grant will also allow the interns’ hourly stipend to increase from $10 an hour to $11 an hour.

PlatteForum is a Denver-based nonprofit that, in addition to its ArtLab, has an artist residency program.

Mom has strong words for former deputy Andrew Buen, accused of shooting Glass

In a crowded courtroom in Clear Creek County, a former sheriff ’s deputy and former sergeant entered vastly different pleas to charges associated with the shooting death of Christian Glass.

Former Clear Creek County Sgt. Kyle Gould announced he will plead guilty in the Nov. 2 hearing and agreed to return to court on Nov. 16, when charges will be announced and he will be sentenced, according to Judge Catherine Cheroutes.

Gould is charged with criminally negligent homicide and reckless endangerment.

The details of Gould’s scheduled

plea deal with prosecutors are not public, according to the court.

Meanwhile, former Clear Creek County deputy Andrew Buen, who is charged with murder in the 2nd degree, official misconduct and reckless endangerment, entered a plea of not guilty and requested trial by jury through his attorney.

Glass died on the night of June 1011, 2022, when he was stranded in his car near Silver Plume. He had called 911 for help, saying he was trapped and his car was stuck. Officers asked Glass to leave his car, but he refused in what turned into a long standoff that ended when officers broke the car window and used a Taser on Glass. Buen shot Glass five times, killing him, according to the indictment.

concerning traffic control, lighting, landscaping, parking, noise, drainage, stormwater and erosion control apply to the project because they impact surrounding neighborhoods.

The school district believes that because it’s a public entity, it falls under the jurisdiction of the state rather than the City of Idaho Springs.

The Colorado Department of Public Safety’s Division of Fire Prevention and Control issues building permits for school districts, it says.

At a court hearing on Sept. 22, Idaho Springs Municipal Court Judge Michael Goodbee postponed a trial, noting that if school district and city officials could come to an agreement, they could avoid six months to a year of litigation.

“There was a disagreement about what Colorado statutes allow,” Assistant City Administrator Jon Cain said. “Impacts to the surrounding area and the community — the city maintains that land-use control, so our Final Development Plan process, which we did tonight, is a process to measure those impacts.”

“This (Planning Commission) hearing is part of a settlement to dismiss the lawsuit,” Idaho Springs City Attorney Nicholas Klein said. “As part of a bargaining settlement, this is the lone hearing on the subject, the final decision.”

Interim Superintendent Mike Gass said after the hearing: “What we needed for (city officials) to do is kind of put a bow on it, and I think

we got there.”

School board member Kelly Flenniken added: “The city recognized the authority school districts have as an independent government … so I think this shows the quality of partnership between the city and the school district. … We have kids that need to be transported next school year, so I’m very, very thrilled.”

City staff recommended approval of the plan because the request adhered to the Idaho Springs Land Development Regulations, which mandated the FDP process, according to documents provided to the Planning Commission. Concerns about the

building and the site, which the city provided to the school district more than a year ago, have been met, the documents said.

In 2022, the school district applied for a Final Development Plan approval with Idaho Springs, and city staff had six conditions of approval.

The school district didn’t follow up, believing it fell under state requirements. Now those six concerns have been met, the Planning Commission documents said.

They included that the school district had the proper setbacks from Highway 103, that it provided a landscaping plan using drought-tolerant

plants, that the TMF won’t be intrusive to neighbors, parking stalls are the appropriate size, fuel tanks meet city requirements and the building complies with architectural requirements.

The school district and Idaho Springs also had resolved issues related to a September cease-and-desist order that demanded the school district stop installing a main water pipe at the site. However, the school district said it was a misunderstanding, its crews were not working on a water line and the school district was waiting for city approval to install the pipe.

“It’s so hard for us,” Sally Glass, Christian’s mother, said outside court following the Nov. 2 hearing.

“Those men were responsible for the death of our son. Gould has accepted responsibility, you can see in his face he’s sorrowful.”

The Glass family, however, had harsh words for Buen.

“The other man (Buen) — I don’t know if I can even call him a man — the way he behaved that night was inhuman, abject cruelty to our son,” Sally said in tears. “You hear that not-guilty (plea) and it’s like, Jesus are you kidding me?”

The Glass family attorney, Siddhartha Rathod, added: “Nothing is enough, there is no punishment that will bring Christian back to his parents and that is the only thing that

would be justice.”

Defense motions in the Buen case are expected by Nov. 27. Cheroutes wants to know if the defense will request a change of venue in the case and a hearing on any motions filed is set for Dec. 18.

When asked by the judge, prosecutor Stephen Potts said finding a jury pool and the trial itself could take four weeks.

Former Clear Creek County Sheriff Rick Albers retired amid criticism from county commissioners about his deputies’ involvement in Glass’ death in 2022.

A civil suit awarded a multi-million dollar settlement to the Glass family. Four agencies agreed to share the costs, including the Clear Creek County Sheriff ’s Office. In a court-ordered apology as part of the

settlement, Albers placed blame on deputies who “failed to meet expectations.”

During his job interview in October before Clear Creek County Commissioners, interim Sheriff Matthew Harris said he’d seen body camera footage of Glass’ death and believes that first responders, including deputies, lacked patience and understanding.

“It was taking too much time and so you can’t let time drive decision making, to make an awful decision,” Harris told commissioners.

County commissioner Sean Wood said he also watched the body camera footage.

“My reaction was (that) I’ve got to do whatever I can in the time I have left in office to make sure something like that can’t happen again,” he said.“Whoever the next sheriff is, that person is going to have a big responsibility in making sure that whatever reforms need to happen, happen.”

Allisha Cody leads a life of service.

The Conifer resident, who is the grants coordinator/grants accountant for the Sheridan School District, also volunteers as the quartermaster for Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12009. She believes in helping in the community and helping fellow veterans.

Cody served in the Navy and in the Navy Reserves a year after high school, and she calls that time a great experience where she found camaraderie with fellow soldiers and lifelong friendships. It also taught her independence — taking care of herself and others.

That is the core of the life she leads.

As Veterans Day approaches, Cody knows her fellow veterans around dsthe country will be honored for the ertime they spent serving and protecting the United States and its citizens.

Enlisting

Cody enlisted in the Navy on an impulse a year out of high school in Washington state. She was on academic probation in college and didn’t really know what she wanted to do with her life. A friend suggested they enlist together, and Cody

After moving to Conifer, she got involved with the VFW post. She called the VFW a place for veterans to meet, get help with things such as benefits and get involved in the community.

VFW Post 12009 is known for its monthly community breakfasts, for

Cody said she was surprised at the number of veterans living in Conifer and Evergreen, and she hoped the post could reach out to more of them.

Cody serves as quartermaster of VFW Post 12009, saying originally that she’d hold the position for a year. That was 12 years ago.

She became an aviation technician, serving most of her four years in Jacksonville, Florida. After being honorably discharged, she took a five-year break and then enlisted in the Navy Reserves, working primarily as an administrative assistant out of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Buckley Air Force Base. She did one tour in Iraq and left the Reserves in 2011.

She said spending time in Iraq was life-changing and eye-opening.

“After being in Iraq, I don’t take things for granted,” Cody said. “I saw the Iraqis and how little they have, and when I came back to the United

However, Americans feel differently when it comes to their local newspaper. According to a 2023 national survey of 5,000 adults, local newspapers are the most relied on and trusted media source of original reporting: more than television and radio, and significantly more than social media. Trust in local newspapers extends across age groups and demographics, as adults of all segments recognize the value of reliable local reporting that newspapers deliver.

And, beyond just trusting the reporting local newspapers provide, Americans recognize how important it is to have a healthy local newspaper in their community.

Readers and non-readers alike rely on their local newspaper to shine a spotlight on the issues that matter most to them. From holding local institutions accountable, to reporting on local schools, sports or

That local connection instills confidence that the information being delivered is coming from a source that is invested in the health of the community and committed to high standards of journalistic integrity.

Local newspapers are a trusted advertising source

The trust in local newspapers goes beyond just traditional news. It applies to local advertising, as well.

The same national study of 5,000 adults found that 60% of Americans use newspaper advertising to help them decide what brands, products and local services to buy. That’s about the same as local television and much higher than radio, direct mail and social media ads.

Positive impact of green roofs

reen roofs, also known as vegetated roofs or living roofs, are recognized as a sustainable strategy for urban development. These ecofriendly rooftops offer a multitude of environmental, economic and social benefits, making them a valuable addition to modern cityscapes.

Denver implemented its Green Building Ordinance in 2017, requiring adherence to environmentally sustainable standards for commercial and multifamily buildings over 25,000 square feet and for major renovations. These standards include green roofs or roofs with solar panels as an option for compliance. This forward-thinking policy encourages eco-friendly urban development and contributes to Denver’s commitment to environmental responsibility, positioning the city as a leader in green building practices.

One of the most significant advantages of green roofs is their positive environmental impact. They act as natural insulators, reducing the energy consumption of buildings by moderating indoor temperatures. By absorbing carbon dioxide and filtering the air, vegetation on green roofs contributes to improved air quality and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. They also mitigate the urban heat island effect, lowering ambient temperatures in densely populated areas. This is particularly important in a city like Denver, where average temperatures are up to five degrees warmer than surrounding rural and suburban areas.

Green roofs also play a crucial role in stormwater management. They y-absorb and clean rainwater, reducr-ing the risk of flooding and preventnging pollutants from reaching water bybodies. This not only safeguards local water quality but also eases the burden on municipal sewage syse-tems during heavy rainfall events. msAdding precious green space also r-enhances biodiversity, providing uor ir be an r’s

habitats for birds, insects and other wildlife where they are typically scarce.

The benefits of green roofs extend into the economic realm as well. By reducing energy costs through improved insulation and extending the lifespan of roofing materials, they save money for building owners in the long run, making them a sound investment.

Denver Botanic Gardens has been at the cutting edge of green roof development in Denver. The York Street campus has two publicly accessible green roof installations, a smaller green roof above the Offshoots Café, and Mordecai Children’s Garden, built on top of the visitor parking garage. These two green roofs have served as living laboratories, allowing the Gardens’ staff and scientific collaborators to improve plant selection for vegetated roofs in Denver’s dry climate and better quantify their environmental benefits. Currently, Gardens’ staff is working to establish vegetation on green roofs through direct seeding, which is more costeffective and results in more biodiverse plantings than industry-standard plant palettes. Other exciting work in Colorado is being pioneered by researchers at Colorado State University, who are leveraging the combined environmental benefits of green roofs and solar panels to grow crops on rooftops under a protective canopy of energy-generating panels, a practice known as rooftop agrivoltaics.

As cities such as Denver continue to evolve, green roofs are becoming an increasingly vital component of a sustainable future. With the continued enthusiasm and backing of governments, cultural and academic institutions, Denver can remain a leader in this field.

A guide to audio tours

he self-guided audio tour has been common in the art world since the 1950s, but like many other virtual tools, there has been a rise in the popularity of audio tours in other industries due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Audio tours can add extra elements that visitors do not get when walking the areas alone, according to Luna Hernandez, who works in the Dinosaur Ridge welcome center.

“The audio tour definitely gives you more information than if you were to just walk the trail on your own,” Hernandez said. “We do have those outdoor plaques and stuff like that on the trail. So you still get some information when you’re walking it. But with the audio tour, there is a resident geologist who guides you up the ridge and gives you a lot of information.”

Today, it’s not uncommon to plan a full-day trip complete with a tour of any place around the globe. This includes communities in the Denver metro region.

Self-guided tours in the region cover art, like the 40 West ArtLine; local landmarks, like Dinosaur Ridge; and whole natural regions, like the I-70 Audio Tour. The key to finding these tours is deciding what to see, the level of planned involvement and time allotment.

What to see

Art was the original self-guided audio tour and is a popular self-guided tour focus. In Lakewood, the 40 West ArtLine audio tours take participants through the growing arts district. There are three tour options, all narrated by “art advocate and tour guide” Corrine Anderson.

The Grit and Glitter tour is a primer on the importance and legacy of West Colfax. The tour takes listeners through the neighborhoods going toward Aviation Park in Lakewood. The tour gives history and a sort of mini art lecture on the outdoor art, murals and more along the busiest part of the 40 West Art District.

The Art and Leisure Tour begins at Lamar Street Light Rail Station and follows the track through some of Lakewood’s outdoor art, architecture and more. The Art and Leisure Tour also touches on Lakewood’s agricultural heritage before ending at Mountain Air Park.

The Transportation and Art Tour also begins at the Lamar Street Rail Station. It runs along Lamar Street to the 40 West Art District headquarters. The tour takes a historic slant and guides listeners through the history of the area in addition to highlighting the murals and outdoor art along the way.

However, art is not the only focus of guided tours in the area. Take an urban stroll through the history of the Five Points neighborhood with the Five Points Business District Walking Tour. It takes listeners on a reverent tour of Denver’s historic Black neighborhood.

The kids will love the blast to prehistoric Colorado in the Dinosaur Ridge Audio Tour. The tour is packed with dinosaur facts that will almost make the listener forget about the steepness of the 2.5-mile ridge climb.

The Wild I-70 Audio Tour is more of a natural Front Range focus that takes listeners from Golden to Glenwood. This tour is best done by car, bike or motorized vehicle. It’s 144 miles long and talks about wildlife, including historic animal migration facts, in addition to other natural history and environmental facts.

There are other tours like the State Capitol Audio Tours which concentrates on the Capitol building in Denver, The Story Line Audio Tour touches on 15 sites integral to the history of the city of Aurora and Arapahoe County and the Highlands Ranch Mansion self-guided tour.

What to consider

Choosing a tour can be a chore. There are a few things to consider before deciding, so a little research is required.

Pricing is one issue to consider. Some apps that offer a slew of guided tours also charge up to $50 per person. However, many of the self-guided tours are free to the public. The 40 West ArtsLine Tours are free, but the Dinosaurs Ridge Tours cost $7 per streaming device.

Also, consider the activity level and time commitment. It can take about 3 hours to complete the Dinosaur Ridge Audio Tour, but there are actual fossils and tracks along the hike. Parts of the ridge itself is a drag mark from beasts that roamed the area millions of years ago, according to the tour.

Only bikes and feet are allowed on the tour, so taking the Dinosaur Ridge tour is much more intense than the Highlands Ranch Mansion tour. There is also the weather and seasons to consider for any outdoor tour. The Wild I70 Tour is a brilliant idea for fall foliage. Also consider the drive in May or June, when the wildflowers are in bloom and the baby animals are about.

Some of the tours, like the ArtLine tours, have chapters so that listeners can schedule accordingly.

Be sure to factor in the time of day. Sitting in traffic after an intense hiking tour is tougher than it seems at the beginning of the trip.

Where to go

The research before you go is key. To find the tours, look at the sites for places you wish to visit. Chances are, there is an audio tour that you can preview before embarking.

Several apps exist that compile the audio tours in the area in one place.

However, sometimes the information on the apps is inaccurate and the price higher than the original site requires, so always go to direct websites.

Cody said people thank male veterans all the time, but they don’t think about women serving in the military.

“We served and proved ourselves,” Cody said. “In the military, it seemed like I always had to work harder.”

Rosa said he doesn’t look at Cody

as a woman veteran.

“We all served,” he said. “We all did what we were ordered to do. I have nothing but the highest regard for her. It’s hard to be a woman in the military. She’s a veteran just like the rest of us.”

Encouraging others to serve

Cody said she would tell young people — including her daughter — that if they had the opportunity and it was something they wanted to do, serving in the military was a good option.

“It teaches you independence and

life skills,” she said.

While Cody is honored to have served her country, she doesn’t think about it often, but that part of her past is always there.

“I’m glad I was part of that elite group” of veterans who served and protected the country, she said.

Her dad served in Vietnam in the Air Force, and she says both of her parents are proud that she enlisted and served.

The draft was abolished in the United States in 1973, so everyone in the military since then volunteered to serve their country, Rosa said.

Saying thank you for your service means more than anything. … Had we not done what we did, this country wouldn’t be what it is today.”

Keeping the stories of WWII alive Local woman tours the state as Rosie the Riveter

In Denver and across the front range, author-historian Gail Beaton is keeping the stories and events of WWII alive. As the archivist for the Denver Woman’s Press Club, Beaton uses a unique hook to keep the memories fresh and her audiences engaged.

She tells the story from a homefront perspective, in an entertaining and informative account through a character she developed and named, Gail Murphy. This character was modeled after one of many women, popularized as “Rosie the Riveter,” who worked at the Denver Ordnance Plant, now the Denver Federal Center.

Rosies were those who labored behind the scenes to support not only the war effort, but also the men and women who served. After the war, most Rosies lost their jobs to the returning vets and once again took their positions at home in the kitchen.

One reason Beaton is committed

to this effort is her concern about the history curriculum in our schools.

“There is a push for more learning time to go to reading, math and science, and the social sciences are getting lost. Less history is taught in the classroom,” she said.

In 1996, as a history teacher at Sheridan High School, Beaton knew she had to come on strong to interest kids in WWII and the role women played. That was the impetus for her Rosie character. She continued the role in her classroom until retiring from teaching in 2005.

Beaton has authored many books, and is currently working on her next book about the female homesteaders of Colorado.

Word-of-mouth spread and soon Beaton was getting requests to perform her program in schools and community organizations throughout Colorado and in neighboring states. She is already booking into 2024 with March filling up quickly.

“March is National Women’s History month,” Beaton said. “It’s a very busy month for Rosie.”

Though Beaton performs for many schools, she cautions that the very young would be difficult to engage.

“I was recently asked to perform for a K-12 assembly and I told the liaison the little ones will be lost.”

Loveland Ski Area ready for the season Heavy snow and snow-making at the Clear Creek County ski area means good powder for upcoming opening

Although warm weather stretching into October prohibited snowmaking at Loveland Ski Area, a late snowstorm blanketed the 1,800 acres of mountains with more than 11 inches of snow, readying the slopes for the ski season ahead.

“It’s going to be a good year,” said Dustin Schaefer, Loveland Ski Area’s marketing manager.

With plenty of mountain ski areas such as Breckenridge, Vail, Copper Mountain and Keystone, competition for skier dollars is always a challenge, Schaefer said.

Arapahoe Basin in Dillon claimed the title of first chair of the season on Oct. 29 this year, but most resorts are announcing opening dates through November.

Loveland Ski Area does not yet have an official open date, but it’s coming within the next few weeks, according to Schaefer.

A regular season lift ticket at Loveland is $149 this year for skiers or boarders 15 years and older.

For those up to 14 years old, a lift ticket will be $45 and anyone under 5 years old skis free, according to Schaefer.

“The special thing (at Loveland) is we’re not a ski resort, we’re a ski area. When you go to Loveland, you feel like family, not a number at a regular resort, and we try to keep lift passes financially affordable,” Schaefer said.

A study by RRC Associates, a research company in Boulder, states that Colorado’s ski industry generates $4.8 billion in annual economic output and supports more than 46,000 year-round equivalent jobs.

The Denver Woman’s Press Club, located at 1325 Logan St., founded in 1924, was well established by the time the war started. Its contribution to the home-front support was extensive.

“Members of the DWPC, like those in other women’s clubs, really stepped up during WWII,” Beaton said. “Being a community of writers and activists, they opened the clubhouse doors to servicemen. One major project was the monthly Writers Roundup for soldiers who were writers or interested in writing.”

The female member journalists held sway, especially considering that so many men — journalists included — were off to the battlefields, Beaton added.

The Rosies worked in the media as well. Beaton discovered that Lucille Hastings became the first female full-time news editor on any radio station west of the Mississippi in 1944 when KLZ in Denver hired her for the position. Hastings also formerly served as the editor of the Brighton Blade, now a publication of Colorado Community Media.

“Beaton inspired everyone in the audience to meet challenges of their

own time … to build for the future by understanding the past.”

This author-historian continues uncovering myriad stories from key players during WWII and is dedicated to telling them. But Beaton cautions, “of all the women I interviewed for my book, ‘Colorado Woman in WWII,’ only two remain alive. All the others have died.”

In Colorado today, there are 1,910 WWII veterans still alive. Nationally, that number is fewer than 120,000, with 131 dying every day, according to NationalWW2Museum.org.

“What I hope to accomplish with this performance is not only tell the women’s stories from WWII, but also encourage the audiences to talk to their elderly friends and family members and ask for their accounts,” Beaton said. “I want people to know that these women were amazing. As I researched for one of my books, I was impressed with how humble they were.”

Beaton paused thoughtfully.

“They simply told me,” she said, “‘We just did it.’”
