In a unanimous show of support, Clear Creek County Commissioners agreed to offer the vacant job of sheriff to Littleton resident and federal employee Matthew Harris.

Harris’s resume includes several law enforcement posts spanning 27 years.

Harris replaces longtime Clear Creek County Sheriff Rick Albers, who retired “with mixed emotions” after May’s announcement of a $19 million settlement involving several agencies following the death of Christian Glass. Harris will serve as interim sheriff until the 2024 election, when county sheriff will appear on the ballot.

Currently, Harris is the assistant inspector general for investigation with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, according to his resume. Past experience includes working for the U.S. Marshals Service as an executive officer of the federal courts and as a special agent in charge with the U.S. Postal Ser-

ris the position of sheriff, Commissioner Randy Wheelock said that he feels residents need a fresh look and outside perspective in the Sheriff ’s Office.

He added that of the group of applicants, he thought Harris had the freshest and broadest perspectives.

Months later, a civil suit in the multi-million dollar settlement with Glass’ family was announced. Four agencies agreed to share the costs, including the Clear Creek County Sheriff ’s Office. In a court-ordered apology as part of the settlement, Albers placed blame on deputies who “failed to meet expectations.”

The subject of Glass’s death arose during commissioners’ interviews with applicants looking to replace Albers.

Harris said he’d seen body camera footage of Glass’ death and believes that first responders, including deputies, lacked patience and understanding.

Buen is charged with murder in the 2nd degree, official misconduct, and reckless endangerment. In addition, former county Sheriff ’s Office Sgt. Kyle Gould is charged with criminally negligent homicide and reckless endangerment.

Prosecutors recently offered plea deals, the details of which have not been made public. Both defendants are next due in court Nov. 2.

do whatever I can in the time I have left in office to make sure something like that can’t happen again,” he said.“Whoever the next sheriff is, that person is going to have a big responsibility in making sure that whatever reforms need to happen, happen.”

Commissioners had high praise for two internal candidates who applied for the position of sheriff.

Lt. Seth Marquardt and Undersheriff John Stein also interviewed for the job.

Speaking after the announcement, Stein said the Sheriff ’s Office is in transition.

“Nothing changes right now,” he said. “We have jobs to do continuing operations serving the people and getting ready for him (Harris) to come in. Then we start looking at the next steps whatever that may be.”

If Harris accepts a contract with the county, several hurdles still stand in the way. Harris would be required to move to Clear Creek County and complete Colorado’s Peace Officers Standards and Training course.

If Harris would want to run for the elected Sheriff position in November 2024 by statute, he would be required to move to Clear Creek County by Nov. 3 as candidates are required to be a resident of the county for one year.

When asked if he would pursue the elected position of sheriff in 2024, Harris said it would be presumptuous to answer. He told commissioners he would want to experience the job first and see if it was a good fit for him and the community.

Race to rebuild: 6 months after announcing its move, Bandimere Speedway is still looking for a new location and buyer

The Bandimere family announced on April 21 that the iconic speedway would close at the end of the season. The season has now ended, and the search for a new location for the speedway is still in progress. Sales haven’t been finalized on the current facility.

After celebrating 65 years at Thunder Mountain, the Bandimere family wants to expand and upgrade the speedway.

Bandimere Speedway President Tami Bandimere explained that the current speedway only utilizes 120 acres of the 160 that facility sits on. The Bandimere family hopes to find a location with over 400 acres to allow for a state-ofthe-art facility.

The current facility has no water or sewage lines and is losing a good portion of parking. The land and the business are two separate entities that hold their own value, which they have considered throughout the selling and purchasing process.

Currently, the Colorado Hazardous Materials and Waste Management Division doesn’t have extensive knowledge about the Bandimere Speedways property, but a spokesperson provided some insight into what happens when selling a similar property.

“In general, most real estate transactions do require an environmental site assessment and/or clean up as part of

the transaction,” said a spokesperson from the Colorado Hazardous Materials and Waste Management Division.

Bandimere remained confident that the property will sell and a new location will appear. Details on land usage remain unknown as a prospective buyer and Bandimere Speedway are under a non-disclosure agreement and plans will be released if the sale is finalized.

Other prospective buyers have backed out once they realized that there aren’t sewage or water lines, Bandimere explained.

There have never been water or sewage lines on the land, and the water from the well that was on the property dried out several years ago. For years, 1,000-gallon water trucks have supplied all the water for the speedway.

The Bandimere family has been leasing a portion of the property to use as overflow parking. That property is now under contract to sell, resulting in a loss of ample parking for future seasons if Bandimere Speedway remained at Thunder Mountain.

“I don’t get very emotional, but I think about my grandparents, and I don’t think they ever would’ve thought that this place would be here in 2023,” Bandimere said.

The idea of Bandimere Speedway moving near Denver International Airport was ditched once underground issues on the property were discovered.

It has been difficult for the Bandimre

family to find a property that people are still willing to travel to, has a strong foundational structure and over 400 acres of land. Tami Bandimere hopes for features such as theater-style seats, good sound systems, new food and beverage areas, water and sewage, to help enhance the racer and fan experience.

“Knowing that we were here for 65 years, in this facility, if a new facility comes together it would be a long-term situation. You have to make sure your foundational stuff is spot on, the last thing you want to do is rip stuff up or replace stuff because you didn’t do it right the first time,” Bandimere said.

The Mile High Nationals will not be returning to Colorado in 2024. For the past 35 years, the Bandimere family has had the longest-running national event sponsorship in the history of the National Hot Rod Association.

Showing their support, the NHRA agreed to not host an event in Colorado until Bandimere re-opens in the future.

In 1988, the NHRA agreed to pull the Mile High Nationals so that Bandimere Speedway could finish the $4.2 million renovation, which was open in time for the 1989 season.

“Everyone wants to hear what they want to hear and that’s OK, as long as we put our stake in the ground and our story never changes then they understand we’re being upfront with them,” Bandimere said.

Before this study, several paper topographical maps categorized areas as glaciers, but modern satellites and aerial photography hadn’t been used to track changes to them. Some of these maps were more than 30 years old.

“Glaciers in the western U.S. never had really been properly inventoried,” Fountain said. “As we know, glaciers have changed a lot since then (in 30 years).”

Researchers believe these glaciers are shrinking due to global warming – and possibly wildfires. Additionally, caverns in the glacier created by streamflow underneath can let sunlight in and melt the glacier.

“Smaller glaciers don’t do as well, don’t add as much water,” he said.

“As glaciers shrink, these streams then become more and more susceptible to drought, as well as the surrounding riparian areas and adjacent landscapes, which changes the ecology in these high alpine areas.”

One solution could be artificial glaciers made by underground pipes that spray like fountains and freeze into a cone shape, which slows the melting. Another is glacier covers, usually made of plastics and fleece, to help insulate a glacier and block the sun.

Fountain said that these “stop-gap measure[s]” are “not going to be of practical value” for the West. Instead, he wants people to focus on getting rid of the carbon dioxide to help slow global warming.

This study defines a glacier as being present for more than 20 years, having an area of at least two football fields (or 0.01 square kilometers), and showing signs of movement.

Without these, it’s just a perennial snowpack or a pile of rocks.

“If we saw crevasses, then we knew it was moving because cracks develop when the ice stresses and strains, said Andrew Fountain, professor emeritus at the university and one of the study’s authors. “Even though the glaciers might have snow, the one that doesn’t move is a snow patch or an ice patch, and the other with crevasses is by definition a glacier.”

Researchers looked at U.S. Department of Agriculture aerial photos taken from 2013 to 2020 of about 4,000 areas, according to Fountain. They were only able to classify around 1,300 areas as glaciers and 1,200 areas as perennial snowpacks.

According to new research, St. Mary’s Glacier in Colorado is too small and does not meet the 0.01 square kilometer threshold to be classified as a glacier.

Taylor Glacier in Rocky Mountain National Park is too rocky and does not have enough snow coverage to be a glacier. Isabelle, Moomaw and Peck Glaciers were all deemed perennial snowpacks.

Other well-known glaciers that didn’t make the cut in the Mountain West were Petersen Glacier in Wyoming and the Grasshopper Glacier in Montana. They don’t believe Idaho has any glaciers.

ast week I had the opportunity and privilege to speak with a group of executives and investors about the difference between selling in today’s virtual environment against what the sales playing field looked like pre-pandemic, when face-to-face meetings with customers were more common. This particular group is not alone in their frustration and in their search for a solution that will deliver the sales results that had been forecasted at the beginning of the year.

The first thing we had to do was to go back in time. Even though we believed that our outside sales representatives or account executives were having more face-to-face opportunities to meet with clients and prospects, 70% of what they did was still remote. Research and precall planning, initial calls, followup emails, sending proposals via email, and the natural back-and-forth conversations once that initial meeting took place to try and complete the sale.

Salespeople everywhere are questioning themselves and where they can and should use technology or sales enablement tools, artificial intelligence, and ChatGPT to increase win rates, average deal size, expand upsell and cross sell opportunities, and to reduce sales cycle time.

WINNING WORDS

Even the very best sales champions are seeking the best solutions for filling their sales funnel with new prospects.

So, we have a new playing field, remote selling instead of face-to-face. We have new sales enabling technologies Michael Norton that seem to pop up almost every week.

We have senior executives who are losing their patience with poor performance and deals that continue to slip month-to-month and quarterto-quarter. The solution may not be the enabling technologies or the remote selling environment, the solution will come down to making sure that we connect on a human-to-human level.

In an age of digital disruption and automation, the most valuable assets a salesperson can offer are fundamentally human — empathy, creativity, and intuition. While artificial intelligence is advancing rapidly, human qualities like emotional intelligence remain uniquely our own.

Savvy salespeople recognize this and lead with their humanity.

Showing genuine care and connecting emotionally with prospects is key. Take time to listen deeply to

their needs instead of launching into a sales pitch. Be authentic and vulnerable when appropriate to build trust. Demonstrate that you see them as real people, not transactions.

Listen between the lines for clues about motivations and hesitations.

Draw on your emotional intelligence to navigate objections smoothly.

Adapt your style to each prospect’s personality and buying journey.

Customize solutions using your creative problem-solving skills.

Leverage your intuition when deciding strategies. Be willing to deviate from the sales playbook and take measured risks if your gut says it’s right. Lean on experience and lessons learned to guide your instincts.

While AI can analyze data, only humans have the ability to form bonds that turn prospects into loyal clients and raving fans. We can inspire with passion and conviction that no machine can replicate. We can win hearts as well as minds. Think of the word “trust.” People will talk to people that they like, but they will do business with people they trust and respect.

The future of sales belongs to those who embrace the beauty of being human. Lead with empathy, creativity, and intuition. Instinct and agility whether we are selling remotely or in person will be a huge differentiator. These inner strengths and soft

skills are what set us apart. They allow us to build diverse relationships that weather shifting markets and technologies. Honing our emotional intelligence gives us an edge no algorithm can match.

Although you may not be in sales, you may know someone who is. Either way, when we can recognize that our contributions to bringing data, insights, relevant context, and sound questioning strategies that help our prospects and customers make the best decisions when making a purchase, our ability to lean into the human-to-human connection will make all the difference in the decision process when the prospect is trying to decide to buy from us or our competitor.

Maxine Kaye Tofflemire

May 16, 1946 - October 22, 2023

Maxine Kaye Tofflemire, 77, passed away peacefully, with members of her family present, after a brief battle with cancer on Sunday, October 22, 2023.

A celebration of life ceremony will be held at the United Methodist Church in Doniphan, Nebraska on Saturday, October 28, at 2pm, with a burial preceding in Wessington Springs, South Dakota on Thursday, October 26. All Faiths Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.

Maxine was born May 16, 1946 to Harold and Mable (Linn) Horsley, the youngest of three children. Maxine was born in Jerauld County, South Dakota and attended school in Wessington Springs. In 1957, Maxine and her family moved to Piedmont, South Dakota where she graduated from high school in 1964. On May 30th, that same year, she married Brent Tofflemire, who she had met while visiting family back in Wessington Springs.

Maxine gave birth to their first child, Marcyne (Johnson) in 1966. Shortly after, Brent and Maxine moved to Dumont, Colorado for Brent’s employment. Maxine spent the next several years devoting her life to raising her three children, Ryan, born 1968 and Kelly, born 1971. With Maxine’s love of children and nurturing spirit, she spent many years running an in-home daycare. After her children had grown older, she began to work for the Colorado Department of Human Services.

In 2011, Maxine and Brent moved to Nebraska to spend their retirement closer MORA

to family. Maxine enjoyed being outside, playing cards, her nightly bowl of popcorn, but most important, being with friends and family.

Maxine attended as many of her children and grandchildren’s activities as she could. Equally important to her was spending time with extended family. She rarely missed a family reunion, celebration or event.

After Brent’s health declined, Maxine spent much of her time caring for him. She was a very devoted wife to Brent. After Brent’s passing Maxine enjoyed several adventures with her family including an east coast fall bus tour, a trip to Hawaii, and multiple concerts and plays.

Maxine is survived by her daughter Marcyne (Scott) Johnson and their children, Chelsea, Katie, Tayah, Zoriah, Nikyah and great-grandson Noah; son Kelly (Leigh Anne) Tofflemire and children Marcus (Bailey), Megan, Avery and Emme; daughter-in-law Patti Tofflemire and children Cody and Justin; sister Phyllis (Rich); sister-in-law Brenda; brothers-in-law Norm (Nancy), Mike and Ray; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Brent Tofflemire, her parents, son Ryan, brother Roy, brothers-in-law Tel and Maynard; sister-in-law Karla; 2 nieces and a nephew.

William Mora

It is in deep sorrow that William Steve Mora (Willie) went up to the lord on September 30, 2023. He is survived by his wife Angie Mora, daughter Lisa Mora, son William Mora, 3 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, 7 brothers and 3 sisters.

They would have been married 59 years this Christmas Eve. His parents Tony Mora and Adella Mora lived in Mora New Mexico, where he was born and raised. He enlisted in the Army for 2 years and was stationed in Germany. He also was in the reserves for 4 years after that. After that he moved to Rock River, Wyoming a town he has always loved. That is where he met his future wife Angelina (Angie) Aragon. They got married and moved to Walden, Colorado where he worked at the Lumber Company.

They moved to Idaho Springs, Colorado in 1966 where he got a job at the Henderson

Mine and worked there for 20 years. Then he switched careers and went to work for C-DOT for 24 years. After retiring they bought a motor home and left for the winters seeing almost every state. 7 years ago they decided to buy a permanent winter home in Welton, Arizona. They came back to their home in Lawson, Colorado for the summers.

William has always been a member of the Catholic Church and was a member of the Elks Lodge for 43 years. He loved camping, hunting and taking his razor and 4 wheelers out 4 wheeling.

He also loved having family and friends gathering.

Rest in Peace.

You will so missed by your family and friends forever.

Idaho Springs politico puts pressure on water pressure – Nov. 2, 1973

Idaho Springs City Council candidate Lou Nordine called attention

to the poor water pressure in the city. “We’ve borne the brunt of that problem since time began,” Nordine said. He claimed the problem began at the filter plant on Chicago Creek.

As people enter The Center on Colfax in Denver, they are greeted by a colorful community altar featuring sugar skulls, flowers, skeleton figures and photos of people.

The altar, called an “ofrenda” in Spanish, is part of the center’s celebration of Day of the Dead, or “Día de los Muertos” — a holiday where people honor dead loved ones.

“A lot of it is about reconnecting with who we are as people and who has been here before us,” said Sandra Zapata, the director of youth services at The Center on Colfax.

Day of the Dead is a pre-Hispanic celebration that predominantly occurs in Mexico on Nov. 1 and Nov. 2, according to the center.

On these days, spirits are believed to return home and spend time with their loved ones, according to The Mexican Museum.

Families build altars with offerings to welcome the spirits.

This year, communities throughout Colorado have planned events in honor of Day of the Dead, with hopes of bringing people together — both in person and in spirit.

At the Sheridan Library in Denver, the community group Sheridan Rising Together for Equity planned to host a Day of the

Dead celebration on Nov. 1 featuring dance performances, food and an exhibition of an altar.

From now until Nov. 5, the library is also hosting a traveling museum exhibition from Museo de las Américas about Day of the Dead, displaying artifacts that help share the history and meaning of the holiday.

Museo de las Américas, a Latin American art museum within Denver’s Art District on Santa Fe, has planned its own celebration in collaboration with other organizations at 5 p.m. on Nov. 3.

In Thornton, the city’s arts and culture division will host the seventh annual Day of the Dead celebration from noon to 5 p.m. Nov. 4 at McAllister Park Center.

Zapata said it is really interesting to see how different communities celebrate Day of the Dead, whether it be hosting a parade, creating a communal ofrenda, or visiting the cemetery where a loved one is buried.

“I want to be in those spaces and I want to reconnect to traditions with other folks who also celebrate Day of the Dead.

Maybe it looks different from what I’m used to, and that’s going to be OK,” Zapata said.

“You get to see what they look like outside of, you know, maybe your own experience — and that’s great.”

The Center on Colfax’s ofrenda

The Center on Colfax, an LGBTQ+ community center based in Denver, has been creating ofrendas for Day of the Dead since about 2016, Zapata said.

This year, the center invited the community to participate in building the ofrenda and bring photos of their loved ones.\ Zapata said people’s willingness to share was very touching.

“For them to share very intimate details about their loved ones and why they meant so much to them, and maybe how tragically they lost them — I think it’s such an honor for folks to feel comfortable enough to be vulnerable in a public space with people that maybe they don’t know,” Zapata said.

Zapata, whose pronouns are they/them, said they grew up in Mexico, and it was a tradition for schools to have an ofrenda every year.

“You get to bring pictures of the folks that you want to remember and bring back on Day of the Dead,” they said. “It was always an activity that we did at school and at home and, kind of, honoring those folks and what they taught us.”

At the age of 16, Zapata moved to Iowa.

“It made me kind of cling on to those celebrations much more because I didn’t want to lose them,” Zapata said. “I wanted to continue to honor the traditions that I grew up with, regardless of where I was and whether or not folks around me were going to celebrate it in the same way.

“I just wanted to make sure that I honored my culture and the things that I grew up with,” they continued.

The ofrenda will be open until the first week of November, Zapata said. Creating it is a way for The Center on Colfax to recognize intersectionality within the community, they added.

“Yes, being part of the LGBTQ+ community is important, but all of our other identities are just as important to us,” they said.

Zapata explained being queer and Mexican comes hand-inhand.

“For me to be able to celebrate that very specific space that I live in … It’s important to me that places, like my place of work, will celebrate it with the same enthusiasm, right, that any other celebration would (get),” they said.

Thornton’s celebration aims for more than 1,000 attendees

Over the years, Thornton’s celebration of Day of the Dead has grown to the point of attracting hundreds of attendees.

Alisa Zimmerman, the manager of the City of Thornton’s Arts and Culture Division, said the celebration started as a small gathering in the arts and culture center.

This year, for the seventh annual celebration, the event will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Nov. 4 at McAllister Park Center, located at 750 W. 96th Ave. Zimmerman said it is important for any city to recognize the diversity and richness of its community.

“There is a very large, robust Hispanic community in Thornton — in original Thornton, which is the southern part of Thornton,” Zimmerman said.

By 2019, the event attracted a few hundred attendees, she said. To accommodate the bigger crowd, the celebration is now held at McAllister Park, which has a building on it that was previously a church.

“That proved to be the perfect, you know, home for this event as it continues to grow, and it’s both an indoor and outdoor thing,” she said. “We love the fact that it’s still very near to our core community that loves to celebrate this event.”

Last year, about 700 people attended, she said. The year before that, an estimated 1,000 people showed up.

This year, the goal is to exceed 1,000 attendees, she said.

Attendees this year can expect music and dance performances, as well as face painting, an art market and a costume contest.

The celebration this year will also feature the Butterfly Pavilion. Zimmerman said the pavilion wanted to display its monarch butterfly exhibit because monarchs migrate to Mexico and some people believe that monarchs represent the dead coming back to visit the living.

The Mexican Cultural Center will also create a beautiful ofrenda, Zimmerman said. People are able to bring photos to place on the ofrenda.

“The wonderful part, for me, is it’s so multigenerational,” she said. “I think Day of the Dead represents a wonderful opportunity to gather people together.”

When asked what advice she has for newcomers, Zimmerman said, “Come with a sense of discovery and curiosity about what this holiday is.”

Museo de las Américas to host a procession

Museo de las Américas is the premier Latin American art museum in the Rocky Mountain region, said Executive Director Claudia Moran.

This year, Museo will host a Day of the Dead celebration starting at 5 p.m. Nov. 3 at 861 Santa Fe Drive in Denver.

The free event will feature a community procession honoring loved ones from 6-7 p.m.

This procession is a collaborative effort between Museo, the Art District on Santa Fe, Chicano Humanities and Arts Council, and the Office of Councilwoman Jamie Torres, according to a news release.

The procession will commence in the parking lot of Su Teatro at 721 Santa Fe Drive around 5:45 p.m. and will head on a route that will conclude at Museo de las Américas.

The celebration will feature an altar, a dance performance, local vendors, sugar skull decorating and a Catrina costume contest.

Sheridan Library’s exhibition, community program

In addition to its community celebration, Museo de las Américas is recognizing Day of the Dead through its traveling exhibition that is on display at the Sheridan Library, located at 3425 W. Oxford Ave., until Nov. 5.

“The purpose of the exhibit is to use art and artifacts to explain the history and meaning of Día (de) los Muertos (Day of the Dead),” said Laura Beacom, the curator of collections at Museo.

Creating the Day of the Dead traveling exhibition was by demand, Beacom said. She started building it over the pandemic, and it was first displayed last year at a library in Wheat Ridge.

The objects on display are something people would not normally be able to see if not for the traveling exhibition, she said.

“It’s just really important for people to have artwork that reflects their own history and culture,” Beacom said. “And for people who don’t know anything about it, it’s important for them to be able to learn about it.”

It is important that Sheridan Library celebrates Day of the Dead because the Sheridan community is diverse and strongly Latine, said Kathleen Robertson, supervisor at Sheridan Library. Latine is a gender-neutral form of the word Latino.

“I think it’s important to hang on to cultural traditions,” Robertson said.

This year will be the second that the community group Sheridan Rising Together for Equity will host a Day of the Dead celebration at Sheridan Library.

“We had never seen such a well-attended event at this library,” Robertson said about last year’s event.

This year’s celebration will include performances by dance groups, an exhibition of the altar of the dead, a Catrinas costume contest, and bread and hot chocolate.

The evolution of Day of the Dead

Day of the Dead has its origins in the rituals practiced by Indigenous peoples of the Americas, such as the Aztecs, according to The Mexican Museum.

Museo de las Américas said the Aztecs used skeletons as a tribute to the deity Mictecacihuatl, the goddess of death.

According to History.com, once the Spanish conquered the Aztec empire, the Catholic Church changed when the Indigenous celebrations honoring the dead occurred. This made the celebrations fall on the Catholic dates of Nov. 1, which is All Saints’ Day, and Nov. 2, which is All Souls’ Day. Claudia Moran, executive director at Museo, said that from her understanding, there are two primary areas in Mexico where Day of the Dead is celebrated in a very traditional way — Mexico City and the Mexican state of Michoacán.

Moran, who is from Guadalajara, Mexico, said she has visited Pátzcuaro, a city in Michoacán, many times, as her aunt lives there. There is a lake in the area that has cemeteries around it, she said.

People bring large amounts of flowers into the cemeteries where their loved ones are buried, creating beautiful displays. At night, people bring food and stay up late, sharing stories and reflecting.

“It’s just a moment to remember your loved ones who have already passed.

It’s a moment of reflection. It’s a moment of understanding,” Moran said.

When Moran visited the area as a young girl, the celebrations were smaller, she said.

“Now, it’s like you can barely get into the town,” she said, explaining tourists across the world come to see the celebration.

Day of the Dead celebrations have become more popular in the last 10-15 years, she said. She thinks part of the reason is due to movies such as the 2015 James Bond movie, “Spectre,” and the 2017 Disney movie, “Coco.”

She has even seen a change where she grew up in Guadalajara.

“When I was (a) little girl, you wouldn’t see anything around anywhere in the city, in Guadalajara. Now, you could go to cemeteries in Guadalajara.

Now, you can go to … all these celebrations in the little towns,” she said. “It’s a phenomenon.”

Elements of an ofrenda

An altar and its offerings — called an “ofrenda” in Spanish — are an invitation to deceased loved ones “to be with us in spirit and to share what they liked in life,” according to The Center on Colfax.

There are four basic elements needed in an ofrenda: earth, water, wind and fire.

Earth is represented with food. Sandra Zapata, director of youth services at The Center on Colfax, said it has to be food that the loved one liked and would want to come back for.

“Pan de muerto,” which means bread of the dead, is a sweet bread that often is part of an ofrenda, according to The Mexican Museum.

In addition to food, there is often salt and water, Zapata said.

“The nourishment itself — it’s because they’ve been through a long journey,” Zapata said. “We want them to feel celebrated and want (them) to be full.”

Wind is represented by the movement of objects such as “papel picado,” which is colorful tissue paper cut into designs.

“It’s very easy to break, and it’s a reminder that life itself is very easy to break and it’s very easy for us to lose it,” Zapata said about papel picado. “So, we have to be thankful and we have to be grateful that we are still here.”

Candles represent fire, offering light that is believed by some to help spirits find their way to meet their family and friends, according to The Center on Colfax.

tween the two worlds, Zapata said.

Sugar skulls symbolize loved ones who have passed away, according to The Mexican Museum. Sometimes, they have the name of the deceased person inscribed on the forehead.

Flowers called “cempasúchil,” or marigolds, are always on ofrendas, Zapata said.

“That’s a very big representation of this time of year when these flowers bloom and we can use them to bring beauty into the space,” they said.

Photos of loved ones are also placed on ofrendas, Zapata said.

Not a ‘Mexican Halloween’

For people interested in celebrating Day of the Dead for the first time, Zapata said it is important to look at the traditions and be mindful of honoring the holiday.

“Sometimes, it gets almost, like, tangled in Halloween. And those two things are so different,” Zapata said. “I just want to make sure that folks are mindful of what our traditions are versus something like Halloween, which is not culturally relevant to Day of the Dead just because it’s a different tradition, and it’s a different type of celebration.”

In the City of Thornton, Alisa Zimmerman said the city tries its best to make sure its event is not looked at as a Mexican Halloween.

“We purposefully don’t schedule it on the same weekend or near Halloween,” Zimmerman said.

“And that’s worked well for us because then people know that it’s actually focused strictly on this holiday — remembering people’s deceased friends and relatives.”

Claudia Moran, of Museo de las Américas, said it is important that people research the holiday.

“It is a very unique type of celebration,” she said. “You cannot compare it with anything else.”

“It’s actually a culmination of a lot of traditions that have been combined going back hundreds of years,” Beacom said.

Beacom said she likes that Day of the Dead reminds people that death is part of life.

“It’s not to be feared,” she said. “The nature of love in our souls is eternal, and the material world and the spiritual world … exist at the same place, at the same time.”

Zapata’s favorite part of Day of the Dead is hearing people’s stories about the people they have loved and lost.

“There’s such a connection in telling stories and telling other people’s stories and making sure that the folks that maybe have passed are not forgotten,” Zapata said. “Passing those traditions of talking about the people that we love kind of keeps them around longer, even if other folks didn’t meet them. It’s about the history that we don’t want to forget about.”

In an introduction and tryout, 31 players from fifth through eighth grade took to the court at the Clear Creek County High School and Middle School in Evergreen Oct. 23.

The season schedule and number of schools participating this year is still being sorted out, but the first game is scheduled at Clear Creek High School Nov. 2,

said Head Coach Phil Mauro.

Eager young student-athletes ran drills up and down the court auditioning skills of dribbling, passing and running, all the time, obedient to Mauro’s whistle.

The squad will be split into three teams white, blue and gold.

Tryouts will determine white and blue teams with the remainder making up the gold team, but everyone plays, Mauro said.

There is a round-robin tournament already set for Nov. 7 for the gold team to give every player real-time game experience, Mauro added.

The student portion of “studentathlete” became clear in Mauro’s

opening remarks to the group.

“I care more about grades than I do about basketball,” Mauro emphasized.

A+ behavior in school is required. Disciplinary issues in school mean you’re out. Mauro said he’s looking for examples and leaders in school and on the court.

New uniforms for players this year are an incentive, but even those aren’t guaranteed because according to Mauro, “Nothing is given, everything is earned.”

If you get the feeling this is more than a game rather than a learning/life experience, you have the right idea according to Mauro.

“You learn how to deal with situ-

ations, you learn how to deal with success and failure and put in the work (and) determination toward a goal,” he said.

Assistant coaches Frank Martin and Brendan Huff loudly exclaimed, “Yes, Coach!” to each of Mauro’s requests, perpetuating respect for the head coach position.

It was noticeable that during the initial practice/tryout what the coaches preach they practice on the court: discipline and respect.

The short season ends in December and will accommodate as many games as possible with several local school districts competing at home and away.

Pumpkins everywhere for King-Murphy’s inaugural Halloween walk

Scary, traditional and creative jacko-lanterns were some of the creations along the nature trail at King-Murphy Mountain School for the inaugural pumpkin walk.

More than 65 pumpkins designed by elementary school students, plus a few from Clear Creek Middle/High School, were displayed first in the King-Murphy gymnasium before being placed along the trail. Students voted for their favorites.

Then, after dark on Oct. 26, families gathered at the school, which is on the west end of Evergreen, to participate in the pumpkin walk, checking out the painted pumpkins and the jack-o-lanterns along the trail route. A movie, a photo booth, treats such as hot chocolate and cookies, and the cool weather got everyone into the Halloween spirit.
