Should Carlson Elementary change its name?

There’s a Clear Creek schools survey to find out.

Should the Carlson name stay at the elementary school? Will Golddigger gold and blue colors remain? What about being called the “Cougars?”

The Clear Creek School District will soon consider such questions as Carlson Elementary School prepares for a big more.

The district doesn’t want to make its decision without public input.

So, it has released a public survey asking those questions.

The survey asks “yes” and “no” questions and also gives people the option to suggest ideas. For instance, people can suggest new colors for the school.

In 2021, voters passed a bond to remodel and renovate an old

middle school in Idaho Springs, commonly known as Building 103, so that Carlson Elementary could be relocated there.

“The asbestos has been abated, roof construction has begun, and everything is on track to be ready for school next fall,” Carlson principal Loraine Swarz said.

Recently waiting to pick up her Carlson student after school, Kim Quinn reflected on her family history with the school.“I want to keep the school name, school colors, school mascot,” she said.

“It’s been here for this long. Why change it now?”

Others say, some change might not be bad.

Alex Hub was outside Carlson waiting for his two boys.

“A namesake is… it’s not necessarily bad, it just doesn’t hold a lot of meaning once you’ve removed a few generations.” Hub said.

“Colors I think are cool. Mascot is fine, it’s regional so I think it’s appropriate.”

Swarz said she wants to make sure the community has a voice.

The principal said she wants to get the survey out into the community, in order to get as much feedback as possible.

In a diplomatic way, Swartz indicated her slight opinion.

“Over the last couple of years, I feel like we’ve really tried to build Carlson Cougar pride and so I feel like maybe I’m a little biased,” Swartz said smiling.

At the same time, Swartz said the school would grow into what-

ever name, color or mascot is chosen.

According to district policy, once the survey is complete Clear Creek Superintendent Mike Gass will likely appoint a Naming Committee made up of students, parents, alumni or residents living in the area.

Proposed names for the school will eventually be forwarded to the Clear Creek Board of Education for a final decision.

Clear Creek school board candidates trade jabs at student-run forum

Schuessler, a Denver Public Schools nurse, and Gallanos, the elementary literacy and school readiness director with the Colorado Department of Education, believe the bus barn, known as the Transportation & Maintenance Facility or TMF, is in the right location.

Issues with the City of Idaho Springs over whether the state or the city had authority to issue permits for the building were unfortunate but solvable with collaboration.

“Unfortunately, in complex situations like this, misunderstandings happen, but we’ve worked through those now,” Schuessler said.

Gallanos added: “It saddens me that when disagreements happened in our district that there was a perceived lack of willingness to work collaboratively.”

In contrast, King, a paralegal, and McHugh, who has been involved in public issues and served as Georgetown’s mayor, said the issues between the school district and city should not have happened in the first place, and the school district should have followed the city’s requirements at the outset.

“It’s embarrassing to be on the board,” McHugh said. “We’ve already spent thousands of dollars in attorney fees on this.”

THE NATURE OF LEARNING At Carlson Elementary, students learn about the ‘gift of place’

It was an early and chilly start to the morning when Carlson Elementary first grade teacher Liz Bogers led her math class to the playground outside to start the lesson.

“What time is it?” Bogers asked her class, holding up a mock clock.

The students covered in heavy coats eagerly responded, “7:10!”

The question you may be asking is: “Why are first-grade Carlson students learning how to tell time when it’s 40 degrees outside?”

The answer is a Colorado-based educational concept known as “Good Natured Learning.”

Two Clear Creek teachers, Liz Bogers at Carlson and Mike Patrizi at King-Murphy are engaged in a year-long professional development experience “with the goal of unlocking nature’s benefits for students… through the way they teach,” according to Becca Katz, director and co-founder of Good Natured Learning.

we’re all engaged in,” Bogers said of the school and district.

Both teachers attended a fiveday nature retreat at the Cal-Wood Education Center in Jamestown in late July.

The cost is supported by contributions and grants from the Nathan Yip Foundation and Clear Creek Schools Foundation, according to Katz.

“In the four weeks I’ve been here, the community is really conscious of maximizing gift of place,” said

interim Clear Creek Superintendent Mike Gass.

While first grader Pilot Citarella deciphered his math problem 2+2= on his erase board, with another student, Paraprofessional Mary Lehner exclaimed: “We just erased a bug!” Not something typically heard in a math class, but this is outdoor learning.

The outdoor learning program will continue for both Bogers and Patrizi throughout the school year. Weekly evaluations and monthly meetings

are part of the responsibility, Bogers said. The ultimate goal, she said, is passing on the experience and knowledge to students and fellow teachers.

“Anytime we can get kids out doing something other than being on a screen… those alternate modalities can really happen,” Gass said.

“You know, giving them (teachers) permission to kind of flex the space a little bit is going to benefit kids” Math and movement, as Bogers like to refer to it, seemed to engage the students. “You notice they (students) aren’t playing on the equipment? They’re focused without the stale distractions of a classroom,” she said.

“That’s a fairly insightful way to think about what we do with kids,” Gass concluded.

Innovation, engagement and entrepreneurship CCHS students participate in a program designed to develop innovation

Picture the ABC network show “Shark Tank” and you’ll have a pretty good idea of what’s being developed by Career Connections Coordinator Dacia Kelly in the Clear Creek district.

Four teams of two students will spend the school year developing, manufacturing and marketing products of their own design in Kelly’s IncubatorEdu class at Clear Creek High School.

They will be working with local business leaders who have signed up to volunteer as a Coach, Mentor or for the Board.

King added: “We need to work with the city. We are not above the law.”

Idaho Springs took the school district to court in early August because the city contended the school district hadn’t gotten the proper zoning approvals and permits before site work began at the track for the bus barn. Then on Sept. 13, Idaho Springs officials sent another ceaseand-desist order to the school district, demanding that it immediately stop installing a main water pipe at the site.

Although the water pipe issue has been resolved, the school district still needs to appear before the city Planning Commission to resolve the initial stop work order.

Senior James Ryan is working on a “heated hoodie” that uses a cell phone charger for power.

Sophomore Maggie Gothman and junior Cara North are designing a trash can with multiple liners to cut the time of replacing a trash bag every time.

The self-directed style is key, according to Kelly.

“It immediately brings relevance and their interest to the forefront because they choose it and so they’re exploring out this idea they had in the form of this process,” Kelly said.

The Clear Creek district has partnered with “IncubatorEDU,” a national entrepreneurial program for curriculum guidance. It’s supported by the Schools Foundation and theDaniels Fund, Kelly said.

The concept has the support of

Clear Creek High School Principal Chris Gould and Superintendent Mike Gass who attended a “ribbon cutting” for the classroom Oct. 12.

“It’s about that critical thinking piece, it’s about communication, it’s about adapting. So much of our learner profile fits with this course,” Gould said.

“It’s about keeping up and being innovative and being a leader,” he continued. “It means if you’re standing still, you’re probably way behind, so these kids are getting an advantage.”

Second-semester students should also be eligible for college credit due to Kelly’s recently earned Master of Business Administration degree, she said.

Self-directed learning and passion of process is what Kelly said she believes will motivate students.

“In this class, I have a really good mix of kids that traditionally excel at school and kids that struggle a little bit more,” she said. “And with the thought process, it evens the playing field in this course.”

The “competition” will culminate in May with one team named the winner and awarded the $2,500 prize money for development.

“It’s an ongoing process and we will be looking for community and business partners to work with us as coaches and mentors,” Kelly said.

Issues facing the district

The candidates also disagreed on what issues were most pressing for the district.

McHugh and King said the board needed to address teacher pay and retention, and affordable housing for district staff so they can live where they work.

The school district has increased teacher pay since 2016, when the salary for a teacher with a bachelor’s degree and experience was $32,000.

This year, the starting salary is $44,250. While that is progress, McHugh and King say salaries need to continue to increase.

Clear Creek has had a teacher retention issue for years, and the district hoped moving to a four-day school week would aid in recruiting and retaining teachers.

Schuessler said the board needed to address the district’s older school buildings and maintenance issues.

While Carlson Elementary School is getting a new building, KingMurphy was built in the 1980s, and Clear Creek Middle/High School on Floyd Hill was built about 20 years ago. The backlog of maintenance at all district schools was huge, and the district has begun addressing those issues thanks to voter-approved bond money.

Newcomer Anji Gallanos believes safety and the mental-health crisis facing students should be top priority.

Bond money also helped pay for some safety improvements, especially locking classroom doors and entryways, and district officials have expanded mental-health interventions for students. Gallanos said more should be done in both areas.

Every candidate agreed to support the Georgetown Community School during their term.

Robust laws against human trafficking hardly used T

Colorado prosecutors landed a single conviction for labor trafficking and fewer than 50 convictions for sex trafficking in 17 years despite multiple efforts to strengthen state laws.

From 2006-2022, there have been 267 criminal cases involving trafficking, and within those cases there were 619 counts of labor trafficking and 10,813 counts of sex trafficking, according to a new report from the Laboratory to Combat Human Trafficking. But very few resulted in convictions.

Many of the people initially charged with trafficking ended up being convicted of other crimes, including child abuse, drug charges or “keeping a place of prostitution,”

found the new report from the Colorado nonprofit.

All of the trafficking charges were filed in just 23 of Colorado’s 64 counties, which points toward the need for more widespread train-

ing among law enforcement and district attorneys’ offices to identify and prosecute trafficking, the report said. Its authors called on Colorado to strengthen local task forces that work to prevent trafficking and hold traffickers accountable in court.

They also said Colorado needs to do more to include trafficking survivors, and those most vulnerable to trafficking, including LGBTQ people, Indigenous people and immigrants.

The task forces need to include

people who “reflect and look like the community” because people who need help with food, shelter and language translation will seek out others they feel comfortable around, said AJ Alejano-Steele, co-founder and research director of the Laboratory to Combat Human Trafficking.

“If you have a high population of immigrants from Mexico, does the partnership actually have people who represent that group?” she asked. “It’s hard to go to people for help if they don’t look like you.”

In agricultural areas, the groups should include people who work on farms, and in mountain communities, they should include people who have worked as sheepherders, for example, she said.

Sheepherders migrate to Colorado from Chile, Peru and Mexico to work on ranches, and in some cases, find out after they arrive that they are required to work 24 hours per day, seven days a week, the report said.

it said. “Most herders reported having no days off for over a year. These workers have been consistently exploited to the financial benefit of their employers — the very definition of labor trafficking.”

Larger jurisdictions are more likely to have officers trained to identify human trafficking and how to interview potential victims.

The results show that many counties aren’t using state trafficking laws as often as they could be, the report said. Rural counties rarely, if ever, use the statutes. Five counties had 67% of the human trafficking charges filed in the state. In order of case counts, those were Adams, Arapahoe, El Paso, Denver and Jefferson counties.

In a Jefferson County case announced last month, a sheriff’s

special investigations unit uncovered a human trafficking operation inside a massage parlor in Golden.

After receiving a report from someone who feared a massage therapist was a trafficking victim, law officers searched the business and discovered that a Chinese citizen had been coerced into performing sex acts in exchange for a green card, authorities said.

Colorado statistics show the state has been far more focused on sex cases than labor cases. All but 10 of the 267 cases that resulted in charges in the past 17 years were sex trafficking, the report found.

“Sex trafficking tends to receive more attention,” Alejano-Steele said.

There is a “lag in understanding” about what labor trafficking looks like, speculating that it’s harder for people to recognize because the effects of it are commonplace in daily life. People are complicit when they buy coffee or fruits and vegetables produced by people who are being

trafficked, she said.

“It makes labor trafficking feel a little bit close to home,” she said.

People who have unstable housing are some of the most at risk for becoming trafficking victims, and traffickers will prey on people who are in shelters or temporary housing because they know that housing will expire. The Laboratory is hoping to work with more housing nonprofits so people are trained to help residents avoid being trafficked.

“When you have somebody who is in need of making money, in need of getting a shelter over their head, in need of putting food on the table … you have prime conditions for a trafficker,” Alejano-Steele said. “If you are desperate, you will follow somebody who is offering you a day job.”

Colorado updated its trafficking laws in 2014, creating the Colorado Human Trafficking Council and aligning state law with federal trafficking laws. As a result, the state

saw a burst in prosecutions. But the number of prosecutions statewide has declined since then.

Prior to 2014, there were just two trafficking convictions in Colorado.

Additional state laws since 2014 have sought to provide immunity for prostitution offenses for minors who are sex trafficked, create felonylevel crimes for stealing wages, and give agricultural workers the right to state minimum wage, overtime and labor organizing. A 2022 law established an office for missing and murdered Indigenous people, who are trafficked at higher rates, within the Colorado Department of Public Safety.

Tips to protect child mental health from social media use Social media can be a great tool to help build connections, stay informed and engage with others.

However, it can become all-consuming and potentially damaging to adolescent brain development, which is a cause for concern.

A recent advisory issued by U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy calls attention to the potentially harmful effects social media has on children’s mental health. According to the report, 95% of teens ages 13-17 say they use social media, with more than a third saying they use it “almost constantly.” In addition, 40% of children ages 8-12 use social media, even though most platforms require users to be at least 13 to participate.

According to a study in the report, teens who spend more than three hours a day on social media face twice the risk of experiencing mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety. Other potential issues referenced in the report include: • Body dissatisfaction, or disordered eating behaviors • Social comparison • Lower self-esteem • Poor sleep The information in this report corroborates with the what UnitedHealthcare providers are often seeing: an increased rate of harmful comparison, limited in-person interaction, feelings of loneliness and an uptick in anxiety, depression and

Adults cannot afford to wait to understand the full impact of social media because adolescents’ brains are still developing. It’s crucial that parents take an active role in helping their children safely navigate social media.

Set guidelines and boundaries when it comes to your family’s social media use. This can be agreedupon expectations of what social media use looks like to your family, including screen time limits, online safety and protecting personal privacy. The Academy of Pediatrics has a template that can guide you through the process.

Communication is key

Initiate open and honest conversations, without judgement, with your child about their activity on social media on a regular basis. Ask them about what they see on social media and pose hypotheticals, asking how they would respond in different scenarios. Ensure they know the signs of cyberbullying, and how permanent an online post can be.

Create tech-free zones

It can be helpful to restrict electronic use at least one hour before bedtime and through the night. Studies show two or more hours of screentime in the evening can greatly disrupt the melatonin

Why school board elections matter and why you should vote

Every other November, Colorado voters choose the people who make important decisions about their local schools. But in most school districts, very few people vote in these school board elections —and most of them aren’t parents of current students.

required new development fit the historic character of the neighborhood with some affordable housing.

The Board fought having a park set aside until the City forced them to.

The New Elementary School project doesn’t even need half of the vacant 83,000 square feet for around 140 students which they ignored.

I presented an alternative of demolishing half the vacant school building which they didn’t bother to study. The proposal for an arts and performance center there will still not fill much of the space and it lacks code required parking so they are proposing bussing people in and out. I am not against an arts center but this is a forced solution.

The design they presented does not separate this public venue from the school which is a security problem they deny.

The ridiculously over-budget Bus Barn also puts the School Board’s competency to meet the new Elementary School budget into question. There were alternatives presented to the Bus Barn on the school track, which is more expensive because it is forced into the mountain, robs the kids of scarce sports field space, and could be used for some housing. But the School Board ignores alternatives including one by the City to share a new maintenance building. Then they tried to build it without real community input and required City approvals and wound up in litigation.

The School Board lacks transparency and seems to make its decisions behind the curtain. I have been involved at public meetings as a citizen architect and while I have been brutally honest (and ignored), I have not broken any rules.

Bottom line: dump the School Board and vote out all incumbents.

Douglas Robert Bertucci May 6, 1950 - October 2, 2023

Douglas Robert Bertucci, of Dumont, CO, passed away on October 2, 2023, in Lakewood, CO, with his beloved wife Nina (Hacia) Bertucci by his side. He was 73 years old.

Douglas, known as “Doug” to his friends and loved ones, was born on May 6, 1950, in Taylorville, IL, to the late Enrico and Eloise (Peyton) Bertucci. He moved to Springfield, IL, with his family when he was nine years old and stayed there until graduating from Springfield High School in 1968.

After graduation, Doug’s love of nature, music, and the mountains called him to the Colorado Rockies. Doug settled in Blackhawk, CO, high in the mountains west of Denver in 1977. Before the year was over, Doug had met the love of his life, Nina Hacia. They married in 1981 and relocated five years later to a home in nearby Idaho Springs, CO, where they resided for nearly two decades. Finally, in 2002, Doug and Nina bought a beautiful plot of land in Dumont, CO, where they constructed a ranch-style house and happily lived there through the present day.

Vocationally, Doug held a number of jobs throughout his life, and was especially gifted at understanding plumbing and mechanics.

Never one to shy away from tough work, Doug could be found throughout the 1980s and 1990s driving a commercial snowplow for CDOT, opening highways along the Colorado Divide. He was able to operate all kinds of machinery and large vehicles, which came in handy during his many years working for the Public Works Department of Idaho Springs. Additionally, Doug was also a shrewd investor with an affinity for figures and business research and was known to his family and friends as the person you wanted to speak with if you were making a move on the stock market or needed advice on anything from real estate to household appliances.

When he was not working, Doug enjoyed a number of hobbies and interests. Music

was one of his first and greatest loves. As a young child, Doug was captivated by the sounds of the 1960s, particularly The Beatles. He began learning drums and guitar in his teens, eventually becoming proficient on the drums at a professional level. He played many years with bands “Rockslide” and “Sin City Band.” Doug enjoyed live music, whether it be a live concert or drumming along to the latest hits on the full drum kit he always had set up at home. He continued playing drums as long as his health allowed.

An avid outdoorsman, Doug enjoyed nature and wilderness. He was a skilled fisherman and would happily teach anyone (especially visiting nieces and nephews) how to catch, clean, and cook fish. His collection of lures was robust, and he could tell you every single thing about each one like he was being paid to do it. Later in life, he took up golf, and took to the greens with similar detail and passion.

Doug was predeceased by father Enrico Bertucci (1921-1987), mother Eloise (Peyton) Bertucci (1926-2003), brother-in-law Alan Dondero (1949-2009), and his beloved golden retrievers, Aspen and Abby.

Doug is survived by his loving wife, Nina (Hacia) Bertucci, his siblings Michael Bertucci (Cindy), Nancy Bertucci-Dondero, Enrico Bertucci, Jr. (Barbara), David Bertucci (Lesley), his brothers-in-law Robert Hacia (Bernadette), Richard Hacia (Tess), Michael Hacia (Beth), and mother-in-law Anna Hacia who just reached the 102-yearold milestone. Additionally, Doug leaves behind over one-dozen nieces and nephews, a handful of grand nieces and nephews, and countless friends. His loyalty, tenacity, and dry humor will be missed by all who knew him.

A memorial event and celebration of Doug’s life will be held for friends and family at a later date. In the interim, please join the family in honoring Doug’s life and offering your condolences during this difficult time.

eligible voters vote. Sometimes just a few hundred or even a few dozen votes separate the winners and losers.

That means every vote matters.

In Colorado, school districts are run by elected officials who serve on the school board. School boards usually have five to seven members. The main function of a school board is hiring the superintendent, who is like the chief executive of the school district and responsible for day-to-day running of local schools. School board members supervise and evaluate the superintendent. School board members also vote on the budget and pay raises for teachers and other staff, and they set policies that control what happens in schools.

A school board might cast the final vote on whether to close a school with low test scores or too few students — or vote to change budget priorities so those schools have more money. Or a school board might vote to adopt a new curriculum if the old one isn’t working well to educate students.

School boards also have the final say on many contentious issues. If a student is expelled and the family appeals to keep that student in school, or if a teacher is fired and appeals to keep their job, the school board makes the final decision. School boards have voted to opt out of Colorado’s comprehensive sex education standards, to remove police from schools, and to bring police back.

Exactly how school boards operate can vary from district to district.

For example, in 2020, school boards in some districts voted on whether to move to online learning, while in others, the superintendent made that decision.

School board members don’t typically get involved in the details of running the district. That’s the superintendent’s job.

School board members can’t discipline a teacher or principal or directly tell them what to do. They don’t set bus routes or decide which routes to cut if there’s a driver shortage. School board members don’t directly pick which schools to close.

In most situations, the superintendent will make a recommendation to the school board. The school board can vote to approve or reject the recommendation or ask for other options.

School board members also can raise awareness about problems and

ask for policy changes. If enough board members agree, the superintendent will work on that idea.

Most school board members are elected by the registered voters in that district.

School board members serve staggered four-year terms. On a five-member board, three of the seats would be up for election one year. Then two years later, the other two seats would open up. The Denver school board has seven members, with four seats open one year and three seats open two years later.

Most school boards have term limits, so members can’t serve more than eight years total.

School boards always have an odd number of members so they don’t end up with a tie — though ties can still happen if someone skips a meeting or abstains from a vote.

Sometimes a school board member quits in the middle of their term.

In that case, the other school board members choose someone to finish the term.

Sometimes school districts cancel school board elections because there aren’t enough candidates for a contested vote. That saves some money but means voters don’t have a choice in who runs the schools. Whoever volunteered becomes the school board member.

Some school districts elect school board members at large. That means each school board member represents the entire district, rather than a specific region within it.

If your district elects members at large, you’ll see all the candidates on the ballot and can vote for as many candidates as there are open seats. If there are two open seats, you can vote for two candidates. If there are three open seats, you can vote for three candidates, and so on. The top votegetters serve on the school board.

Other school districts are divided into geographical regions, and each school board member represents a region. These school board members have to live in that region.

In some school districts, only voters who also live in that region get to vote in those school board races. If that’s the case in your district, you’ll see just the candidates for your area on the ballot. You can vote for one candidate, and the top vote-getter will represent that region.

A school board that wants to pay its members has to hold a public meeting on the idea and then vote on the

groups like the League of Women Voters and educational nonprofits often host forums or panels where you can hear from the candidates in their own words or even ask them questions.

You can also check out candidate websites and see how candidates describe themselves and talk about their priorities.

Read about the candidates or watch how they answer questions. Think about how their views compare with yours or how their life experience might have prepared them. What connection do they have to local schools?

ou could call pumpkins an important symbol of autumn.

The minute September rolls around, pumpkin appears in every food imaginable from pumpkin-spice lattes to soups to pumpkin cereal. Huge cartons of pumpkins arrive in stores as we prepare for fall holidays.

But what do we know about pumpkins? How long have they been growing? Do they have other uses than decorations and pie? Why are some pumpkins different from the orange pumpkins we carved as children?

Here’s your chance to learn more about the orange — and sometimes white and even teal — gourds.

Bitter beginnings

The pumpkin began as a tiny fruit — yes, pumpkins are fruits — as long as 7,500 to 10,000 years ago in Mexico and Central America, according to Jennifer Ackerfield, head curator of natural history collections at the Denver Botanic Gardens.

The original fruit from the Cucurbita family, which is Latin for gourd, was tiny, hard and round, nothing like today’s pumpkins, and the plants were stinky. Historians hypothesize that the fruits were eaten by woolly mammoths, Ackerfield said, and there were six indigenous species, with one species growing now in the Denver Botanic Gardens’ York Street location.

“Interestingly, the funky varieties are old-time varieties. We wouldn’t call them heirloom pumpkins, but it’s in a similar vein.”

He said pumpkins, like many fruits and vegetables, have a wide genetic diversity, and some plant breeders look for that.

“Sometimes they find wild varieties that are attractive, and they cross-breed them to get desirable traits,” Hammond said.

He said nowadays, people are looking for unusual-looking pumpkins, and growers are happy to take advantage of the demand for them.

“Unusual-looking pumpkins have always been there,” he said. “It’s just there wasn’t a demand for them until recently.”

If you want your pumpkins to last a lot longer and you are not carving them into jacko’-lanterns, wipe them with a diluted bleach solution, which kills microbes, and the pumpkins will last a lot longer, Hammond said.

He advised people to compost their pumpkins after they have outlived their decorative purpose rather than throwing them away, so they don’t add to landfill waste.

I am running for school board with Kerry Ann McHugh to change the balance of power on the board and improve the trajectory to benefit our children and build a stronger foundation of education in our county. Our district spends more per student than all neighboring districts.

Despite this, our teachers are some of the lowest paid, and our student enrollment is at an all-time low. Teacher, admin, and support staff retention continues to be an issue. Our high school/middle school has not had potable drinking water for years.

Our current majority board is overspending on bond projects and refuses to ex-

plore alternatives to curb the overspending and potentially save the district millions. The current majority board is unwilling to listen to community voices and does not welcome criticism, ideas, concerns, or comments from parents, teachers, or other stakeholders. The current majority board tightly controls what is on the agenda, refusing to discuss important matters that may reflect poorly on them.

I am the best candidate for this position because I will bring fresh perspectives and a common-sense voice to the board. I am a community voice, a taxpayer voice, and a parent voice. As a board member, I will welcome and encourage involvement from teachers/staff, students, parents, and community

stakeholders, including all accountability committees. I will ensure that meeting agendas are properly crafted and include all relevant topics. I will not ignore items that should be discussed.

What would you do to promote openness, transparency and communication in the school district?

As a board member, in order to promote openness, transparency and communication within the school district I will ensure a welcoming environment at all public meetings.

I will help to ensure that all board members have input when the meeting agendas are drafted, so that all topics are able to be openly discussed. I will limit executive sessions to matters that require it by law,

and conduct them lawfully.

Public comment will always be welcome and not met with condescending tones, negative feedback, or threats of arrest.

One change that I would immediately support would be to formally establish feedback loops and open communication conduits to ensure that all stakeholder groups have an open voice with the board.

I would also like to establish a student committee to attend and participate in board meetings and study sessions.

I would ensure that meeting minutes and videos are posted in a timely manner. I would also ensure that financial records are readily available for the public. As a board, we should be open with what is being spent and how it is being spent.

I’m a bilingual school nurse who lives in Idaho Springs where I raised two boys and live with my husband. I work in Denver Public Schools and collaborate with school teams so students receive the individualized education plans they need to thrive and succeed. I have 20 years of professional experience in public health nursing, and I am passionate about working on collaborative teams that serve the whole child and partnering with local and

Furthermore, the board’s agenda-setting process needs a thorough reevaluation.

The board president should not single-handedly dictate the conversation’s direction; every board member, and by extension, their constituents, deserves a voice. By incor-

porating the diligent work and insights of the District Accountability Committee (DAC), which consists of community stakeholders, we can ensure that our decisions reflect a broader perspective and adhere to community needs.

C-Dot has plans to make sure the impact is as minimal as possible. The city and the City council will work together as always to limit the impact to the local business community.. The more outstanding concern would the

How will the city address the issue of parking, especially downtown? Is the proposed parking structure a solution? If so, where will it be placed and how will it be paid for?

Parking is and has been an issue. The city staff has been working on different plans and ideas for the past few years. The effort has been lead by Jonathan, Assistant City Manger. Many hours have been invested in the planning for improved parking.The parking garage would be a solid addition for parking in the city.

C-DOT Has committed to help finance the parking

garage. In addition to parking the garage will be used as a regional transportion terminal. Addition funds will come from the cities parking revenue, which we collect now. The work continues for the planning and implementation of the parking garage. Location will be the what is now our surface lot adjacent.Interstate 70 West bound.

Idaho Springs City Council Election Questionnaire: Lisa Manifold How will the city react to the expected economic impact of on-going construction on I70 and the possible travel/tourist impact of the delays and closures to come?

Economically, the city will need to take measures as it did during COVID closures, such as zoning changes or easing regulatory restrictions, which allowed our businesses to adjust and remain open.

The city’s Vitality task force is looking at this right now, in how to get ahead of the coming construction projects. The city is, and must continue to, actively work with residents and business owners to keep our economy going.

One aspect of this is the partial closing of Mt. Blue Sky in 2024 and full closure in 2025. This is a local attraction that brings in 170,000 visitors to our city each year.

It’s my suggestion to look

at utilizing public transport originating in Idaho Springs to move visitors to trailheads and starting points where we can still capture those who are here to be outdoors while working around the necessary repaving of the road to the summit. By considering solutions before active construction begins, we can ease the impact.

The recent I70 closures have shown that the city needs to build a plan to address closures and changes.

While working with CDOT, we also need to have our own plan in place to allow residents to get to where they need to go, as well as emergency vehicles. It’s positive that the city is working to find ways to move traffic through the area in times where there are unexpected accidents and closures, while protecting our streets that weren’t

built for interstate levels of traffic.

How will the city address the issue of parking, especially downtown? Is the proposed parking structure a solution? If so, where will it be placed and how will it be paid for?

I believe that the parking structure is going to take a lot of the pressure off of the downtown area in regards to parking. It will add approximately 225 spaces to those we currently have available.

It’s planned to be part of the mobility hub built with CDOT located between 13th & 15th Avenue, bordered by Water and Idaho Streets. At this point, the city has been awarded grants totalling a bit over 2 million for the design and build of the parking structure, and there are plans to apply for more. Initially, the city looked at other ways

of funding, but those centered around funding from businesses, and that was not the right direction. I believe the goal of seeking as many grants as we qualify for to pay for our parking upgrades is the appropriate move.

Additionally, our current paid parking system will be able to fund our parking needs moving forward, taking the majority of the burden from our residents. I do think the system is due for an overhaul, now that we’ve had it for a few years. There is always room for improvement, and we now have the data and input from residents around what has and hasn’t been working. While not everyone loves the paid parking, it allows us to shift the costs of maintenance and upkeep away from our residents and onto those who use the parking most.

First mountain snow brings omen for Clear Creek High School skiers Golddiggers to soon hit the slopes for 2023-24 season

The auburn, golden leaves are finally popping in and around the Denver area. That means the mountains are getting powdered with g snow. Skiers and snowboarders are already looking to the peaks with hungry eyes. That includes high school ski teams.

In just a few weeks, the Clear h Creek High School team will begin practicing for the upcoming ski season. Around Nov. 6, the Golddiggers will begin their dry-land conditioning, which includes weight training, aerobic conditioning like running teand biking. They’ll also do some cross-country skiing if early-season snow sticks around long enough.

“We’ll just be trying to get our bodies ready for the season,” said Brian Inman, the ski coach — one of his many hats — at Clear Creek.

“As soon as the Loveland Ski Area opens, we’ll start training up there on Fridays and Saturdays, just getting on the snow and skiing.”

Last season, Loveland, about 25 miles west of the Idaho Springs high school, opened the first week of November.

Clear Creek has had a ski program for more than 50 years. Residing in the mountains has its benefits, and many of the team’s skiers have been hitting the slopes since they could walk. But it’s much more than a weekend holiday for these student athletes.

Looking ahead to the 2023-24 season, it’s a bit of a reset. Several seniors were lost to graduation, including Parker Scott, who represented Clear Creek at nationals last season. But his sister, junior Addyson Scott, is ready to take up the torch and lead on the women’s side.

It’s still an uphill battle to get numbers this year, but it looks promising, Inman said.

“I have four returning for sure,” Inman said. “And then we have four coming up from the middle school that will be freshman who have

skied for us, and then I have a handful of kids that are talking about trying it. We have our meeting next week. I’m hoping we’ll have around 12 or 15 at the start of the season.”

You don’t have to be an avid, lifelong skier to make the team, either.

Inman said he’s taken students who have never tried it and turned them into bona fides by January.

“I’ll take anyone. If they’re willing to spend some time learning how to ski, I’ll teach them how to ski,” Inman said. “But I need them to start early, so we have time. But anyone who wants to try it, we’ll work with them.”

There are 15 teams in the Colorado High School Ski League state-

wide, according to the Colorado High School Activities Association, or CHSAA. The teams consist of districts. For example, Jeffco School District has one team: Evergreen.

Nederland’s ski team consists of anyone from the Boulder Valley District. But they consist of students from all over the counties, no matter their high school.

Being Clear Creek’s rival, this provides a power imbalance between smaller schools like Clear Creek and the combined numbers of Jeffco kids at Evergreen. Yet, Clear Creek still had a stronger season last year.

At the 2023 state skiing championships, Clear Creek’s women’s team finished ninth (out of 15) with a

total team score of 347. The men’s team finished eighth on the other side. Evergreen’s team finished 11th and 12th, respectively.

Considering what they’re up against numbers- and resourcewise, if the Golddiggers finish within or close to the top 10, it’s a successful season, Inman said.

“Last year was a successful one for us – I mean, we beat Evergreen,” he said. “That was a big win for us.

That’s not typical, because we’re so small. We show up with maybe anywhere from 12 to 20 kids, and there are teams across the state that have two-or-three times as many kids in their program” Teams like Aspen, Steamboat Springs and Battle Mountain might have racers who have been skiing since they were toddlers, he explained. That’s hardly the case for the Golddiggers.

“Like I said, we’ll take anyone and teach them how to ski,” Inman said.

“We might have a kid that started racing when he was a freshman in high school. If he gets to state by the time he’s a senior, that’s a huge accomplishment for us.”

Clear Creek might take a step back this season, but the big picture looks positive. Losing experience is never easy to replace, but there are young skiers ready to make their mark when it’s their turn to step up.

Plus, reinforcements from the middle school and newly interested skiers provide a baseline for a strong half-decade of skiing. Throw in the experience of Addyson Scott, who has two more seasons to go, and it wouldn’t be too surprising if the Golddiggers begin to get closer to the top 5 rather than the top 10 on a yearly basis.

“The realistic goal of a kid from Clear Creek that joins our program is they’re going to walk away with a lifelong activity that they can teach their kids to do and enjoy for the rest of their life,” Inman said. “That’s one of the great things about skiing … you can take it up and enjoy it the rest of your life. Your career doesn’t end when high school is over. You can continue that forever.”

The Golddiggers’ first giant slalom event is Dec. 15.

Broken rail likely caused Pueblo train derailment

A broken rail likely caused a train hauling 124 cars of coal to derail on a bridge over Interstate 25 north of Pueblo, killing a semi truck driver, federal investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board said.

The board’s preliminary assessment determined that the bridge collapsed after the train derailed on Oct. 15, sending coal and mangled train cars across I-25 and closing the busy route between Pueblo and Colorado Springs. As many as 30 train cars derailed.

Investigators were at the scene in the aftermath, trying to figure out what caused the broken rail and why warning systems did not alert crews, the NTSB said.

Federal investigators will also look at the adequacy of prior track inspections and the condition and maintenance history of the bridge.

The federal agency will release its preliminary report within 30 days.

A final report could take up to two years to be completed.

The broken rail was east of the bridge over I-25, the NTSB said.

Both northbound and southbound lanes of I-25 remained closed in the days after the crash as crews

continued to clear debris from the road. BNSF expects cleanup to be completed by Wednesday, when CDOT engineers and maintenance crews will assess the damage and determine what repairs are needed to reopen the highway.

Drivers headed south are advised to use Colorado 115 until they reach Penrose, before heading east on U.S. 50 toward Pueblo. Northbound drivers can exit the interstate at U.S. 50 and go west, toward Pueblo West, then north on Purcell until they reach I-25, CDOT said.

There still remains confusion over who owns the bridge that collapsed and who was responsible for

maintaining it. A spokesperson for BNSF, which operated the train that derailed and owns the line it runs on, told The Colorado Sun the state owns the bridge.

But Matt Inzeao, communications director for the Colorado Department of Transportation, said state officials are still combing through documents, going back to the bridge’s construction in the late 50s, to determine who owns it.
