Willis Harkness White

September 5, 1938 - January 24, 2023
Willis Harkness White, humble leader and treasured family member passed away peacefully in the company of family January 24, 2023 in Boulder, CO.
Willis was born in Rhode Island in 1938. He grew up in Arnold Mills, RI as the oldest of three children.
Will studied Geology at Wesleyan University, CT and Oregon State University. In 1964, he married Maurla Haehlen and had three children, Juliana, Daniel, and Amy.
Will worked for AMAX mining company and the family spent their early years in Idaho Springs, CO. Will served on the city council, was a member of First Presbyterian-United Methodist Church, and was active with Underhill Museum. In 1984, he began work with the US Geological Survey. Work took him and the family to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Anchorage, AK, and Reston, VA. ing holes as does Washington. Yet, even at eventually self destructs. Manufactures can’t be bribed with tax breaks nor cheap labor housed. Our Counties problems are not isolated as I found others in the same predicament. It seems politics has a pattern to it. It su ers from future blindness. As cycles rule the Universe, human nature must submit to this law as well. Would we have been here without that mine or those shiny metals? Communities begin and end at the whim of the resources around them, no mater what size or age they achieve. Perhaps our little museum towns will go on awhile longer but I think the County may all but expire into the subcontracted agreements of it’s former existence. All things change. It seems the world no longer wants its citizens volunteering to serve. In place it is moving toward the much fewer on-elected, ruling the increasingly reducing many. While our regimes, both local and global, ght for power amongst themselves, we the citizens wonder what will be our fate. Here at home in our little county, we are already taxed and priced out and must do with less each day, nding that elections can no longer change anything.
Will retired in Herndon, VA where he faithfully dedicated his time to the church, sang in a barbershop quartet, and developed his passion for genealogy. He enjoyed leading family reunions, hiking, working with the church’s food pantry, riding his bike, and walking.
Will is survived by his wife, son, daughters, and six grandchildren. In lieu of owers, we encourage those who are interested, to contribute to a cause that supports Will’s passions: Idaho Springs Historical Society, Community of Faith UMC memorial fund in Herndon VA, or just o er a smile to someone who needs one.
