RoundAbout Bus making trips to Loveland Ski Area

Stop, Georgetown Mountain Buzz and Silver Plume Green Solutions. The bus will drop off at Loveland Basin and Loveland Valley.

The Roundabout Transportation Bus in Clear Creek County has begun offering rides to Loveland Ski area.

The bus will offer low-cost rides Wednesdays through Fridays. It will pick up at the Idaho Springs Ride

The first pickup of the day is at 7:30 a.m. in Idaho Springs, and the last bus leaves Loveland Valley at 4:25 p.m. The bus runs on five continuous loops during the day, so there are multiple opportunities to get picked up and dropped off throughout the day.

A round-trip ride will cost $10 for adults, $5 for veterans, $7 for seniors and $5 for children.

Tim Moreland, the county’s transit supervisor, said the new project is exciting for the county.

“We applied for a grant through CDOT specifically for expanding our RoundAbout route,” Moreland said.

The grant he’s referring to is part of the 2023 Clear Creek County RoundAbout Expansion Project, specifically CDOT’s 2022 Super Call, Federal Transit Administration-5311 for rural areas.

Moreland said the grant covered

burglaries

Clear Creek County law enforcement agencies are working with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office to determine if a man recently arrested in connection with burglaries in Evergreen and Kittredge could have committed similar crimes in Clear Creek County.

The suspect, Titus Emilyon, 38, from Littleton, is facing six counts of second-degree burglary, six counts of third-degree burglary, felony criminal mischief and misdemeanor theft for crimes committed in Evergreen and Kittredge.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Emilyon has a history of committing commercial burglaries and was on parole for a burglary conviction when he was arrested.

Clear Creek County recently has seen a string of similar burglaries, four occurring in the county on Dec. 1, one in Idaho Springs, two in Empire and one in Georgetown.

New Year New Plans

Resolution Season is finally upon us. As we attempt to re-invent, re-invest, and re-charge our personal lives, let’s not forget what that means for our Estate Plans.

A New Year means a fresh start. A chance to make up ground on things we were hoping to do last time around the sun. Its extremely important to include your Estate Plans into those resolutions. Its likely this past year and the new year alike will bring change. New family members, loss of family members, financial success, financial woes, new acquisitions, and possibly a change in taxes. These changes can have a huge impact on your Estate Plans moving forward, so make sure YOU don’t leave them behind.

These changes may include things like:

• Loss of a Loved One

• New Beneficiaries

• Loss of Beneficiaries

• Change in fiduciaries

• Sale or Purchase of Property

• Sale or Purchase of a Business

• Change in Ideals and Principles Don’t let these changes negatively affect your Estate Plans. Let’s make sure we all remain on the same page. With a properly established and funded Estate Plan, we can ensure that you have the ability to give what you want, to whom you want, when you want, the way you want. During that process we can help you save money on every court cost, legal fee, professional fee, and tax fee legally possible.

Estate planning is never about how much you have, but how much you care about what you have.

West Jefferson Middle School

Principal Kim Halingstad agreed to be dunked in a tank if students raised more than $20,000 for the school by performing acts of kindness.

What she didn’t know is on the day selected for the official dunking, the winds were howling with

Falling for her students

temperatures in the mid-30s.

Students took part in a PTA fundraiser called Raise Craze where they asked for donations from friends and family based on acts of kindness. By the end, students with the help of some business sponsors raised $21,148 by performing 1,228 acts of kindness.

Classes that raised the most money played dodgeball against the staff, and a trophy will be displayed in Susan Bergkamp’s classroom because her classes raised the most money.

The PTA will use the money to purchase cubbies to place outside the cafeteria and a new router for technology classes, for teacher grants and student scholarships,

and to fund PTA-sponsored events.

Halingstad’s icy dunking took place during the school’s three lunch periods with one teacher and three students having a try during each period. Students left the cafeteria and headed outside, each getting an ice cream treat before watching the frigid festivities.

Halingstad was clad in a wetsuit, and to keep warm between her dunk tank adventures, she wore a hat, bathrobe and heavy coat. She also sipped on hot coffee.

Halingstad smiled when she said she was doing this for the students, though she hoped the karma gods would take pity on her.

Students were excited to watch

the antics, cheering loudly when Halingstad wound up in the water.

Language arts teacher Stephen Matschullat and instrumental music teacher Laura Sarché, who missed when they attempted to dunk the principal, each sprinted to the dunk tank, pressed the target and watched her fall.

When a couple students asked if the water was cold, Halingstad playfully kicked water in their direction. The students decided the water was definitely chilly. After her final turn in the dunk tank, as Halingstad was sprinting back to the school building, she noted, “I’m going home to take a hot shower.”

Chocolate, the most beguiling, seductive natural substance, a ubiquitous aphrodisiac. Dark, white or milk? How do you like yours? Pure and simple, perhaps wrapped in foil in the form of a waterdrop? Or encasing an almond, cashew, cherry, cream or mixture of them?

The etymology of the word seems to have come from the Nahuatl, natives of southern Mexico and Central America: chikol tl. For millennia, cacao was food for and from the gods, a sacred ambrosia in Olmec, Maya, and Aztec spiritual rituals. Finding it unappealing to their delicate taste buds, the invading Europeans sweetened it with honey. It quickly found its way into the regal courts of Europe, where it remained in the domain of the nobility who jealously guarded it as their divine

Chocolate

right. Legend has it that it became a favorite for Casanova, understandably so given its purported aphrodisiac power.

What was once sequestered in the realm of the gods and their mortal legates over time became available to the masses. Humanize the gods, dethrone their majesties and enjoy what they did. That is the power of secularism and democracy. And economics. Worldwide annual chocolate sales, now in the tens of billions of dollars, are projected to grow at increasingly higher rates.

In 1828, a Dutch chemist figured a way to reduce the cacao bean to pow-

der, hence Dutch cocoa. Nineteen years later, Englishman Thomas Fry reversed the process and created the first chocolate bar by folding melted cacao butter back into Dutch cocoa. It did not take long before John Cadbury marketed the creamy morsels. By 1868, he was packaging them in a heart-shaped tin, and the rest, as ´tis said, is history.

Pre-Lent to post-Lent, it is interesting to see how chocolate has become entwined with Valentine’s Day in the shape of hearts and at Easter in the form of bunnies and eggs. At Halloween, demand again spikes. And then it is pell-mell during the winter holidays as it makes the most splendid of gifts and welcoming treats for guests. I still recall my elder sister, Boots, bringing home a large box of assorted chocolates each Christmas from a local confectioner.

“One!” she’d pointedly say as she held the box. Her second rule was that if you touched it, you ate it. So I had to be judicious making my selection. One and done. Hmm…which has the cherry or coconut encased within the confines of the sweet milk chocolate?

Of course, temptation lurks during the months between because candy bars and other delectable treats fill display racks along supermarket checkout lines. And for me, dark chocolate has become my preference, although whenever a Snickers falls within my line of sight, I become melted chocolate.

What is it, though, about chocolate that makes it such a magical food? Do its inherent chemical compounds bond with welcoming, agreeable host cells in the bloodstream, creating a potion that can transform the most unlikeable character into a charming friend, awaken and sustain passions of the heart, and even bring a moribund, morally uptight community held under the oppressive hand of over-wrought morality

ABOUT

back to life?

Those are themes of the novel and film Chocolat. Vianne, the heroine, shows up in a French village right before Lent to open a chocolate shop. There she creates concoctions of mixed forbidden fruits conjured from the bitter-tasting cacao bean. She plants the seed of vitality in a lifeless wasteland, and soon the power of her products — chocolates in various forms from bars to drinks — work their magic.

Medical science is now providing evidence for chocolate’s health benefits, especially dark chocolate. It is being shown to reduce anxiety and clinical depression. The reason seems to be that chocolate enhances serotonin, which helps calm troubled minds. In addition, because of the high amount of flavonoids, it helps reduce cardiovascular disease risks, reduce cell damage and lower blood pressure. What’s not to love?

“Chocolat” is one of my favorite films to watch again and again. It is not only a fun tale, but it also serves to remind us to let go of our uptightness and enjoy life.

Chocolate has a rich history to back up its power. As we know, a cup of hot chocolate on a wintry day can warm any heart. So let me suggest a way out of our quagmire. Mimic Vianne.During the holiday season, host a serotonin-enhancing chocolate party at which every dish and cocktail is chocolate based. Invite every morally, socially, or politically priggish stiff and bah-humbugging Christmas-stealing grinch you know and a few others to sweeten the mix. You have nothing to lose and much to gain. You might develop lifelong friendships, and your sweet tooth will be pleased. And since chocolate is far better for your health than eggnog, your heart will thank you.

If you’re looking to wrap gifts without curious eyes peeking over your shoulder, try out the gift-wrapping stations at the Clear Creek Libraries.

The Idaho Springs Public Library and the John Tomay Memorial Library both have gift-wrapping stations set up through the month of December.

Clear Creek County Library District director Libby Caplan said the program has been running for a few years and is just another great resource from the local library.

“Our goal is to enrich life and eliminate barriers,” she said.

By having a free wrapping station, the library can help cut one holiday cost for people.

“That stuff is expensive...it’s a great way to save money,” Caplan said.

The stations are stocked with tape, scissors, gift wrap, ribbon, name tags and more. The library receives these items as donations after the holidays, making the program sustainable.

“People like to give to the library and not create waste, at the end of the year we started asking for donations,” Caplan said.

The stations make it easier to wrap presents in privacy, without spoiling a surprise.

The gift wrapping stations will be open all of December, except Dec. 24 - 26 and Dec. 31. The Clear Creek County Library District also is accepting donations of gift wrapping supplies that are in good condition.

A half-million LED lights blossom at the Denver Botanic Gardens

During the warm months, Denver Botanic Gardens’ 23-acre York Street campus, next to Cheesman Park, blazes with colorful flowers and plants. Over the holidays, the color is provided by an estimated halfmillion LED lights.

An annual tradition since 1988, Blossoms of Light heralds the holiday season with dazzling color at every turn of the gardens’ paths. It takes months to install the lights using poles, lifts, climbing harnesses, waders and cherry-picker buckets. Each year, a few new lighting arrangements are added, while many favorite displays return.

Blossoms of Light opened for the season Nov. 18, and runs nightly from 4:30 to 9 p.m. through Jan. 7,

except on Nov. 24 and Dec. 25. It’s the gardens’ most popular attraction each year, so it’s wise to plan ahead if you hope to enjoy the spectacle.

Timed tickets must be purchased in advance; they are not sold onsite. For the general public, tickets are $24 for adults, $22 for ages 65 and older, $20 for children ages 3-15, and free for children 2 and under. Botanic Gardens members get a $3 discount. The event is accessible to wheelchairs and strollers but icy conditions may exist. For more information and to order tickets, go online to tinyurl.com/CCMBlossoms.

And the Botanic Gardens’ Chatfield Farms campus in Jefferson County offers its own holiday display, Trail of Lights. For information, visit tinyurl.com/CCMTrail.
