cated by playground space needed for a childcare center. Some members of the community were confused as to why the district wanted to move Carlson Elementary from its current location in the first place. Mike Moonan, a district consultant, cited multiple concerns with the property, including issues with the mechanical system and roof, to be reasons why the property is no longer a good facility for the district to invest in. “This site has what they call a 97% facility condition index, as the facility condition index number rises, it indicates that a facility should be looked at for replacement—97% here is totally unacceptable,” MoonanMultiplesaid.meeting attendees expressed strong advocacy for the addition of a childcare facility. As community members pointed out, Clear Creek is a childcare desert, meaning there is little to no access to childcare in the area.

Liz Houston, a community member at the meeting and the Deputy Director of Partnerships & Development, Early Childhood Health Outdoors at the National Wildlife Federation, said that in 2020 there were 405 children under 5 years old in the Clear Creek Community, but only 47 licensed childcare seats available.“Likemany communities in Colorado, Clear Creek County is a childcare desert,” Houston said. “There’s a huge need for childcare in this Othercommunity.”meetingattendees voiced concerns about the physical property and plans, wondering about the lack of parking, ADA access, lack of windows and the issue of security for an outside entity operating on the top floor of an elementary school.Mike Castor, a local architect not affiliated with the project, voiced some of these concerns. Looking at the plans, he saw the elementary school would occupy the first three floors with the fourth being open for a partner.“Amajor problem I see with this plan is they’ve got this fourth floor here. How do you get to this without going through the school?” Castor asked. He proposed a separate entrance on the ground floor of the building.Thedistrict hopes to continue to get community feedback with the use of an online form, due Aug. 31, where people can express ideas and concerns about proposed uses. The master plan draft for the building can also be found on the Clear Creek Constructs website.

However, county officials noted that the center still has some shortcomings.SilverPlume Mayor Sam McCloskey expressed his hope for urgent care/emergency services in the future.County Commissioner George Marlin also pointed out the glaring problem that individual marketplace Obamacare plans are not accepted at the Centura clinic in the center.Kaiser and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield currently are the only companies to offer individual market plans in Clear Creek County, according to information provided by the Division of Insurance.“The plans that are available on the individual marketplace, [Kaiser and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield], Centura did not accept either of those plans,” Marlin said. Marlin said this is part of a larger hurdle of healthcare around the country.“Itfits into a theme; it’s going to take a lot of work at a lot of levels to get healthcare where it’s at an accessible level for a lot of people,” heHowever, said. this will not be the case for Clear Creek for much longer thanks to the Colorado Option bill that was recently passed. The Colorado Option ensures affordable and available plans for Coloradans in every county. The option will be available at fall open enrollment for individuals and small groups, taking effect in January 2023. State Rep. Dylan Roberts was one sponsor of the Colorado Option bill. He said the Colorado Option will help those in rural communities who previously did not have providers who accepted their plans. “Part of the legislation, and now the law, is that providers need to accept patients that are insured by the Colorado Option,” Roberts said. The towns that make up Clear Creek County all contributed to the plans for the Health and Wellness Center that opened last fall.

“I always felt that Silver Plume had as much of a voice as Idaho Springs or Georgetown, and I appreciated that,” McCloskey said.

INTRODUCE YOURSELF
A fter a year reporting for the Canyon Courier, I’m onto my next adventure — reporting for the Clear Creek Courant. I spent the first 18 years of my life planning to become a doctor — I shadowed doctors, volunteered at a hospital and dedicated my time to learning medicine. In 2016, I thought about what I wanted to do most, and that was to help people. I realized my greatest talents were listening to people and being their voice, telling their stories. I saw the nation’s need for good journalists and I decided to focus my efforts on becoming just that. I earned a degree in Convergence Journalism from the University of Missouri, where I reported on a variety of topics including tick-borne illness, COVID-19, arts and culture and more. I also earned a degree in classics with an emphasis in the LatinWhilelanguage.inschool, I spent time interning with public radio stations in Columbia, Missouri and Kansas City, Missouri. I also created infographics for the local newspaper in WhatColumbia.I’vealways found most rewarding about reporting are the relationships I foster with members of the communities I serve. People will always be the greatest part of my Spendingjob.the past year reporting for the Canyon Courier in Evergreen and surrounding foothills communities has prepared me to be the Clear Creek Courant’s reporter. I have learned about mountain life, and reporting has shown me that every day I am going to learn something new about the communities and people I report for.As a reporter, I’m not afraid to ask questions to learn about things I don’t know, or to dig deeper into things I do. You can reach Olivia olove@coloradocommunitymedia.comat for the following week’s sign up for your card online, or connect with a friendly librarian by phone or at your Clear Creek County Library branch. My first priority as a journalist is to meet my community. Please join me for a cup of co ee at the Frothy Cup in Idaho Springs on Sept. 15; I’ll be there from 9 a.m. to noon to introduce myself, hear your stories and learn what you need from your community paper.
SEPTEMBER STAFF BOOK PICK Team Member: RECOMMENDATION:Holly “The It Girl” by Ruth HOLLYGENRE:WaremysterySAYS:The brutal, oncampus murder of her glamorous roommate at Oxford propels Hannah Jones to drop out of university and flee to a life of solitary anonymity in Edinburgh. One decade later, several factors prompt Hannah to reexamine (and reckon with) the past: the premature death of the man convicted of April’s murder; inquiries from an unusual reporter; and unsettling revelations about her old clique of Oxford friends. As Hannah revisits the events of that fateful academic term, she realizes that April’s final days and hours were much more complicated than she ever realized … and that she, Hannah, may now be in danger. This is my favorite of Ruth Ware’s critically-acclaimed mystery novels! Ware provides a meticulously-detailed view into the culture of Oxford University that Anglophiles will enjoy, and rounds out the story with an ingenious plot twist reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s finest puzzlers. Spine-tinglingly good fun! This title is available to check out from your Clear Creek County Library.

In response to “It may be Time for the Legislature to look at laws concerning recounts” The request for recounts was not done in the manner requested. It was asked to have humans count the paper ballots to see if they match the electronic results. This was not done. No human election officials counted the paper ballots. Therefore, we do not know if the actual paper ballots cast match the computer-generated results. Stating that machine counting is the most reliable is naive and made under the assumption that the machines are impenetrable to manipulation. The paper ballots provide your double check. Hence Mr. Romberg’s column has not re-assured, rather left us with the same unanswered questions. Law changes limiting the recount margin to 3-5% means a box stuffer just has to make sure they stuff more than 3-5%, then qualify for immunity!

Owner Liz Boxler had the idea for a secondhand craft store over 10 years ago when a friend passed away and left behind a mountain of craft supplies. She wanted to provide a place for the items to go where they would be appreciated. “At least they know it’s going to be loved,” she said. The original Craft Box location was in Golden, and the store moved to Wheat Ridge five years ago. Items are donated to the store, and sometimes the store is able to purchase secondhand items from people. Employees want people to know these items are valued.

Soul Dog Humane Society Thrift Store, Englewood Soul Dog Humane Society Thrift Store is located at 4725 S. Broadway in Englewood. The small shop boasts consistently low prices for clothing, housewares, pet products andSoulmore.Dog is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the protection and spaying/neutering of animals. Soul Dog has a low-cost clinic in Fort Lupton for spaying/neutering, vaccination and microchipping. It also offers rotating vaccine clinics on tribal lands on a bimonthly basis. Not only does the store provide a second home for craft supplies, but it also provides a low-cost opportunity for those looking to start projects without breaking the bank. Supplies like fabric, yarn, stamps and more can get expensive when purchased new. The store also has a mission to sponsor charities and groups in the community. One ongoing project the store features is the “fidget quilt” for people with Alzheimer’s and sementia, where crafters can take a kit with supplies to create a quilt with tactile stimuli on it to bring back to the store to donate, or to give to someone they know who would benefit.Thestore also uses its unsellable fabric to make reusable tote bags for people to use at the local food bank. At the Craft Box, Boxler said, the No. 1 selling item is fabric, followed by yarn, though the store does see a great deal of paper crafters coming in for Duringsupplies.thebeginning of the pandemic, the shop saw an uptick in fabric sales for those sewing masks. As with many other craft stores, the Craft Box could not keep elastic on its shelves during this time. However, masks were not the only thing people were making during the lockdown.“Peoplejust needed an outlet,” BoxlerBoxlersaid.saw many new faces at the shop (behind their masks), with people picking up new skills like knitting and sending handmade cards to relatives in nursing homes. “I think it was good for us during COVID,” she said. “Not necessarily a huge spike in sales but more of an interest.”Boxlerhopes to continue to see this interest in crafts, and looks forward to new customers.
