Habitat for Humanity looking to repair homes, volunteers for program

The Tunnel 5/Oxbow Trailhead on US 6 for the canyon segment of the Clear Creek Greenway opened June

22. It was originally slated to be completed in December of 2021, but was delayed.

The newly completed segment connects the west side of Tunnel 5 to the already completed 3.75 miles

of trail towards the east into Mayhem Gulch and further into Jefferson County. This allows people to start the trail in Clear Creek

Many are familiar with Blue Spruce Habitat for Humanity, which builds homes for low-income families and operates a ReStore in Bergen Park.

It’s much less known that Habitat provides a home-repair service, too.

Blue Spruce Habitat is looking for those who meet its income or age requirements to get house repairs and those interested in volunteering to do the work.

David Milanaik, Blue Spruce Habitat’s repair coordinator, said workers will paint, clean gutters, perform basic landscaping, remove brush/ junk, install weather stripping, replace boards on porches, stairs or ramps, and more.

Milanaik explained that while other Habitat organizations in the country have more robust repair programs, Blue Spruce Habitat has been focused on building new homes. Now it’s time to get the repair program moving forward.

“The repair program is a natural extension of building new homes,” Milanaik noted. “We can help people who are already homeowners.”

Fireworks Cain also proposed continuing with the city’s plan to have fireworks on the 4th of July, even with the current fire ban in place, as long as the Clear Creek Fire Authority is comfortable with it.

He mentioned the current rain conditions for the week leading up, it being a contracted fireworks show — essentially meaning they have already paid for it — and not necessarily knowing what the weather will be like near Thanksgiving, the next time there could be a fireworks show with the same contract.

Some Council members agreed that the weather seemed to allow it, while others argued for changing it to a drone show in the future to avoid the question moving forward.

“The west is burning, and I think we just need to be proactive with our guidance,” said City Council Member Katie Collier.

City Council eventually agreed to have other ideas brought up in the future, but to move forward with the fireworks show, barring any sudden weather changes or the Fire Authority having a differing opinion on the safety.

VoyentAlert!

Idaho Springs Assistant City Administrator Jonathan Cain presented an update June 27 on a new notification system for the city called VoyentAlert!.

Based on the City Council’s decision to move forward with it in February they’ve now signed the contract, and expect the service to be running within two weeks at an annual cost to the city of $1,900, Cain said.

The service can send emails, texts or calls depending on people’s preferences, along with changing what types of notifications to receive, according to Cain. He gave notification examples like, “There’s a City Council meeting tonight,” “There’s a picnic in the park,” or “There’s a fire, here’s how to get out.”

Once the service is up and running, Cain said the City will share further information on Facebook, along with through the already existing email list.

Clear Creek featured hike: Silver Dollar Lake

It was almost high noon when I started the Silver Dollar Lake trail.

A bright summer day, the sun cast the forest in extreme contrast, with sharp shadows from the trees falling over each other, the green pines highlighted and vibrant, the trail itself vividly lit from the sun beating straight down from above, and all with the surprising sound of a running stream just off trail.

Located off Guanella Pass road, the trail is not a summit hike, but a brief trip through a forest leading to three beautiful lakes, starting already at 11,235’.

Directly off the road is a small, only four or five car parking area, but there is a dirt road that goes up to the trailhead with more parking.

The road is a bit rough, but easily doable — there’s no large potholes or extruding rocks. I went on a Wednesday afternoon and it was already almost full, so earlier may be better.

The path does not stay in the forest for long, as it eventually rises above the treeline, almost completely falling away to reveal the valley, and how sharply the sides fall down.

Laid out is the bowl of the valley that holds Naylor Lake, with giant patches of snowmelt covering the sides of the valley as well.

snow crossings on the trail — giant patches of snow covering the trail — neither very difficult. Once the path starts to approach the other side of the valley, about 10 minutes away from Silver Dollar Lake, it does get a bit muddy. While it may become rather deep mud in some parts,

it’s not shoe-filling. Keeping to the trail is the best way to protect the sensitive alpine nature that fills the area, some of which were beautiful blooming yellow, red and blue flowers.

Approaching the lake, the valley appears fantastical, like a giant beast may walk through any moment. It looks small and yawning at the same time, with the north being an almost featureless rolling hill the height of a mountain, and the south

a snow covered towering wall of stone.

Silver Dollar Lake itself is beautiful, filled with the snowmelt coming from above. Silver Dollar and Murray Lake further on are both popular for fishing, allowed with a Colorado Fishing License.

The trail finishes at Murray Lake, which lies past a final steep ascent over a short hill. The path may be steep, but the top reveals the valley even further, giving views straight

across, with Mount Evans and Mount Bierstadt towering above.

This last stretch brings the final elevation gain to almost 800’.

It may not be a summit hike, but that doesn’t make it any less fantastical and full of worthy views.

It’s also relatively easy compared to other nearby hikes, with a view of the valley along almost the entire way, rather than being blocked by the forest until the very top.

CLEAR CREEK COUNTY NEWS BRIEFS

Lodging Tax and IHOP Clear Creek County Manager Brian Bosshardt said in the June 21 County Commissioners meeting that the county received a grant from the Colorado’s Department of Local Affairs’ Innovative Housing Planning Grant Program, or IHOP. According to the DOLA’s website, the grants are available to local governments to help understand what their housing issues are, and to figure out ways to solve it.It also qualifies local government for the Incentives Grant Program, which gives grants to actually develop affordable housing developments “that are livable, vibrant, and driven by community benefits.”

Calling it “good news,” Bosshardt said the county would be matching the grant up to $50,000, but isn’t yet sure of the exact final amount of the grant.

ARPA Funds County commissioners started discussing how to spend the almost $1.9M in American Rescue Plan funds that Clear Creek is set to receive. As of now, the county has received about half according to Bosshardt, with the other half coming by the end of the fiscal year.

He explained that the funds are partially meant to cover lost county revenue due to the pandemic, and the remaining to be spent on economic aid, or public

health programs. According to a revenue analysis for the county by an outside accountant, the amount lost — about $4M — far outweighs the ARPA funds, so the funds can be used for any governmental purpose.

Some of those funds have already been allocated previous to the meeting, one being the IHOP grant, as well as $80,000 for a Roundabout bus purchase, and $55,000 to hire a grant administrator for a year to help find grants to match funds with.

discussed various other projects that were considered one-time money use priorities for the county.

George Marlin, the District I Commissioner, immediately brought up the need to fund the behavioral health community outreach campaign item — estimated at $25,000.

Ultimately, the commissioners decided to do further research on the deadline for grant applications for it, with District II Commissioner Sean Wood saying he did not believe in the possible effectiveness of the

program.

They also discussed funding for a Housing Authority startup, estimated at $150,000, but decided that lodging tax revenue might fill that need instead. District III Commissioner Randy Wheelock highlighted two fiber loop items — one for Idaho Springs, and another for Georgetown. County staff will be immediately developing grant proposals for both.

Staff will also be finding more grant information for creating a subarea plan for the DumontLawson-Downiville area, a priority brought up by both Marlin and Wheelock. Wheelock elaborated that it’s a “small ticket item holding up some big ticket items.”

Also on the ARPA funds project list was employer-based early childcare. Marlin called it a “massive project,” saying there were multiple grant opportunities for it, referenced a letter of support from the Board of Commissioners saying they promised startup capital for $100,000, and that he saw it as an assumed expenditure. Wood responded that it was a “non-binding comment, it wasn’t a promise in my mind.” The project was not elaborated on any further.

Fire Ban The Commissioners also ratified the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s fire ban enacted on June 15. It consists of Stage 1 fire restrictions, including any outdoor sparks or flames and shooting.

This is part of the broader, multicounty Peaks-to-Plain trail project that, according to the Clear Creek Open Space, will eventually become a 65-mile trail from Loveland Pass to the South Platte River Trail in Denver and Adams County.

True or false: What to know when it comes to sun protection

W

ith summer officially here, you may be rushing outside to enjoy the sunshine and warm weather.

You may also be thinking about how to best protect your skin.

More people in the U.S. are diagnosed with skin cancereach year than all other cancers combined, and most skin cancer is associated with sun exposure. Knowing how to help protect your skin from the sun may have a lasting impact.

To help set the record straight, here is some useful information on some common sun protection myths.

True or false? Your sunscreen should have UVA and UVB protection.

True: When walking down the sunscreen aisle, the choices can be overwhelming. Start by looking for a sunscreen that provides broad spectrum protection. That means it filters both types of ultraviolet radiation.

TheSkin Cancer Foundationsays that ultraviolet A rays are present all day and can cause skin-aging and wrinkling while ultraviolet B rays are strongest during peak hours (10

a.m. to 4 p.m.) and can cause sunburns.

Both types have been linked to skin cancer.

True or false?

One application of sunscreen lasts all day.

False: Sunscreen should be reapplied throughout the day Dr. Jennifer Malin and SPF, or sun protection factor, can help you know how often. If you typically burn after 10 minutes in the sun, multiply that number by the SPF. For SPF 30, this would translate to 300 minutes, but the sunscreen will start to rub off before then. So, reapply often, at least every two hours.

Sunscreens should also be reapplied immediately after swimming, toweling off or excessive sweating.

True or false? You should use the highest SPF possible.

False: You may be surprised to learn that higher SPF does not always mean better protection. You may not need anything higher than SPF 30 if you’re applying gener-

False: To get a sunscreen’s full protection, you should consider applying about oneounce (about two tablespoons). Again, it’s important to reapply every two hours, or right after coming out of the water.

True or false? You can get sun damage on a cloudy day.

True: One of the most common mistakes people make is forgetting about incidental sun exposure. Your skin is still soaking up UV rays even on cloudy days or while driving with the windows down. To help protect skin in such situations, consider making protection part of your normal routine. Put sunscreen on first thing in the morning, even if you aren’t thinking about going outside – be consistent.

True or false? Sunscreen is better than covering up.

False: While sunscreen is vital and should be used, it’s important to stay covered up. Wear lightweight,

tightly woven hats, shirts and pants.

Combine sunscreen and sun-protective clothing for your strongest protection.

True or false? Both sunscreen spray and sunscreen lotion offer the same protection.

It depends. While sunscreen spray can be easier to apply, it comes with a few risks. Sunscreen spray is harder to control and most people do not use enough — experts recommend spraying each area of your body for at least six seconds. You also need to rub it in after application. In addition, ingredients in spray sunscreens may be irritating to your lungs if inhaled, so you’ll want to be sure you’re not spraying it directly on your face. Consider using a lotion for a base and reapplying with spray instead.

Summer is a great time to get you and your loved ones outside to enjoy the fresh air, outdoor activities and exercise under the sun so don’t let concerns about sunscreen stop you from enjoying the warmer weather.

Scan your body regularly: early detection is key

H

aving kidney stones this year saved my life.

It seems like a bizarre thing to say, but in the process of being diagnosed with those stones via a CT scan, a tumor was also discovered on my left kidney. It was something that got my attention in a hurry.

I resolved to learn everything I could about the conditions and causes of this tumor. What the tumor consisted of was a renal cell carcinoma.

It was a slow-growing thing that was about 4 centimeters long when discovered. It also had taken up residence in my body for approximately 10 years prior to its discovery.

These sorts of tumors are in fact surprisingly common. Actor Cameron Mathison and New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy have been diagnosed with the same cancer.

Mr. Mathison and I both had partial kidney removal to get rid of our cancers, Gov. Murphy had to have a full removal of one of his kidneys.

I read where at least 50,000 of these full or partial kidney removals (nephrectomy) are done in the

United States each year. This procedure is done mostly on men, although women can be diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma as well.

Cancer survivor is not something I imagined I would Columnist be able to say about myself when 2022 began. From the time I was diagnosed with cancer to the successful eviction of this tumor from my body, it was a little less than four months.

Because my treatment was so quick and comprehensive, it seems like I am appropriating something — cancer survivor — that is not mine. But I was diagnosed with a cancer that could have killed me. It was found in the early stages, which made the doctor’s jobs easier, thank God. I had an easier time of it than others because I was very, very fortunate. I had kidney stones, which led to the discovery of a tumor that

could have killed me. Now the tumor is out of my body, and it has a very low chance of reoccurrence.

I would be remiss if I did not publicly thank the fine professionals at the Urology Center of Colorado, including Dr Devin Patel, for bringing this matter to a swift and successful conclusion. They are true professionals that are doing what is necessary for the care of others in our state on a regular basis. I am grateful everyday that our paths crossed.

Finally, my situation was caught and resolved through luck. If I could emphasize one thing to each of you, it is the importance of scanning your body regularly to detect the problems that may exist and cause havoc. Through good luck and fortune, I was able to resolve my problems.

Early detection of any issue is worth quite a bit in terms of peace of mind and good health for the long term.

ummer is here.

July is upon us.

And perhaps nothing defines the season as well as a cold, creamy scoop or two on a cone — or in a bowl, if you prefer.

What else appeals so effortlessly to all ages, putting summertime smiles on kids and kids-at-heart?

In fact, Americans consume about 23 gallons of ice cream annually, according to the International Dairy Foods Association. And in case you didn’t know, July has been celebrated as National Ice Cream Month since Ronald Reagan signed the proclamation way back in ‘80s. July is also, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, tied

with August for the two most popular months to eat ice cream — a statistic that surely surprises no one.

Ask a few people who has the best ice cream in the Denver metro area, and then sit back and be amazed at the number of answers you get.

In the old days, it was easy.

There was Baskin Robbins and DQ, and for a special occasion, you might get a counter seat at Dolly Madison.

Then there was Farrell’s, and later, Swensen’s, but these were both chains that came here from other places. Nothing about them was particularly connected to Colorado. And in more recent history, the opening of Magill’s in Lakewood and Bonnie Brae in south Denver signaled that a new era was at hand.

These days, the continuing

trend of boutique ice cream joints using premium ingredients has ushered in what is undoubtedly the golden era of cold and creamy goodness in the metro area. When you make a list, it’s easy to see there are several formidable contenders cranking out delicious frozen delights. So, making a list is what we have done.

To be clear, this is no contest.

The order of the list is not scientific or any type of ranking at all, but merely the order in which they popped into the author’s head. You may use it as a type of map, as it were, to the coolest mini road trip in the metro. Pun intended.

Golden gem offers scenic getaway Outdoor recreation abounds in White Ranch Park

At nearly 4,000 acres, White Ranch Park is the largest park in the Jeffco Open Space system. Inside, you’ll find more than 21 miles of multiuse trails winding through a mix of moderate and rugged terrain.

Most trails are open to the public with the exception of two sensitive areas, which can be accessed only by permit. A 0.9 mile segment of the Longhorn Trail is designated as bike only.

Day trips, picnics, overnight camping — this place has it all. You can do trail runs, hike, mountain bike or saddle up and ride your pony.

WANT TO GO? White Ranch East Trailhead 21827 W. 56th Ave., Golden CO, 80403 White Ranch West Trailhead 25373 Belcher Hill Road, Golden CO, 80403 Birdwatchers flock to see warblers, red tails and several other species. And as with most open space in this part of the foothills, larger wildlife is sometimes close at hand.

A lucky hiker might spot elk, deer, wild turkeys or even a black bear on a trip through the park.

With elevations rising above 7,200 feet in some locations, White Ranch Park has scenic views to channel your inner Ansel Adams or just add to your Instagram feed.

Hikers will find a walk around the White Ranch Loop Trail a great way to decompress with plenty of

beautiful vistas, wildflowers and stately stands of ponderosa pine to make you forget you’re just minutes from the city. The Ralston Buttes are a sight to see, so have your camera ready for a closeup.

White Ranch Loop Trail is 4.6 miles long and gains more than 900 feet of elevation, so give yourself a couple of hours to enjoy it.

It will surely make you remember the reason so many people come to Colorado.

Although a few are designated to be pretty easy, most of the park’s trails require an intermediate level of ability. Some, including Belcher Hill, Mustang and Upper Longhorn, can be quite challenging, so water and some sturdy shoes will be your best friends.

Camping White Ranch Park is one of two Jeffco Open Space parks that allows for permitted camping. Sawmill and

Sourdough Springs Campgrounds offer semi-primitive, tent-only, walk-in camping in designated sites that is available by online permit.

Required camping permits must be obtained at least 24 hours in advance. Permits are $12 per campsite per night and valid for up to three consecutive nights. Camping is limited to a total of six nights within a 30-day period.

The park is open daily one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset. The open carry and discharge of firearms is prohibited, as are open fires, marijuana use and motor vehicles.

Special events or commercial activity requires a permit. Dogs must remain on leash. Restrooms are available and parking can be found at both trailheads.

The huckleberry is to die for. Plus, it’s just fun to say huckleberry.

• Sweet Action opened on Broadway in 2009 and now has four locations serving flavors as fun as you’ll find anywhere, with plenty of vegan options in the mix. You can also find them in Washington Park, Uptown and Jefferson Park.

• High Point Creamery’s Erika Thomas and Chad Stutz have been serving ice cream with elevated flavor profiles in Hilltop, RINO and Berkeley.

• Scrumptious can be discovered a bit further north in Olde Town Arvada. According to its website, the business makes all of their ice cream in-house.

• Inside Scoop in Littleton, with another location on Platte Street, serves 20 flavors that are homemade daily and go perfectly with a handcrafted waffle cone, which they also make fresh.

Thousands rally for reproductive rights in Denver

Horns honked and drivers waved in solidarity as thousands gathered at the state Capitol in Denver on

June 27. The crowd was there to rally in support of reproductive rights after a recent ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

The Dobbs decision upheld a Mississippi state law banning abortion after 15 weeks. In doing so, it opened the door to the reversal of both Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 case establishing a constitutional right to abortion, and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, a 1992 decision reaffirming that right.

Demonstrators of all ages and genders carried signs, chanted slogans and marched from the Capitol through parts of central Denver.

Police shut down roads including North Broadway to allow the peaceful crowd to demonstrate.

The event was the third protest around abortion access since the controversial Dobbs ruling was announced on June 24.

A study by research and policy organization The Guttmacher Institute claims that at least 26 states are certain or likely to ban abortion

in the wake of the reversal of Roe v. Wade. In Colorado, abortion will remain legal barring federal legislation or a change in state law.

Maryjane Chavez, who came to the Capitol with her daughter, said she’s worried the Supreme Court may soon target other individual liberty rights like same-sex marriage — widely held to be granted under the 14th amendment to the Constitution.

She learns quickly. We are guessing she is a maybe Plott Hound with a sprinkling of Lab and a splash of Sharpei mix. She is 62lbs. She does well with children of all ages.

She likes to sleep in bed with her humans. She likes to be with her humans (baby to adult size). She does well with male dogs.

She gets so excited when you say the word "kids" it means the grandkids are coming over and she will run to the window to "LOOK" lol. She is doing amazing in boarding playgroups with dogs of both sexes and all sizes up to 25 dogs at a time!

No kitties for this girl – she can have a prey drive.
