Great Outdoors Colorado awarded a grant of about $360,000 to Idaho Springs for trail and amenities construction at the Virginia Canyon Mountain Park on June 10. The VCMP, being built by the city of Idaho Springs and the Colorado Mountain Bike Association, had a soft opening in late May for residents only, with the upper part of the trail still currently under construction. According to John Cain, the Idaho Springs Assistant city administrator who’s been working on the VCMP project since 2018, the grant money will help the city start building the next phase of the project. One hiking trail and a spur trail that goes to the southern peak of the 400-acre park have been completed. Cain said the next goal is to start building out the dedicated biking trails. He elaborated that they are trying to have separated trails for hiking and biking, and there is an uphill portion of a biking trail that is completed but won’t be opened

A man was shot in Silver Plume by Clear Creek County sheriff’s deputies the evening of June 10 after allegedly trying to stab an officer with a knife. Deputies responded to a call for a “motorist assist” in the 600 block of Main Street in Silver Plume and found a vehicle that appeared to have struck a rock with the driver and sole occupant still inside — an adult white man. Undersheriff Bruce Snelling said he did not know if the call was made by the driver or not, but he did not believe the driver was a local resident. According to the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office, the man became “argumentative and uncooperative” with the deputies who responded to the call. He also armed himself with a knife. Additional officers, including one from the Idaho Springs Police Department, arrived as well for backup. ISPD Chief Nate Buseck
