Clear Creek teachers ask for higher pay

A taco bar, live music, drink specials and cornhole also were included at the event, which helped raise funds for the organization, create awareness in the community and find volunteers. Clear Creek County Advocates Executive Director Joni Albers said volunteers are crutial for the organization. With only a couple staff members, it relies heavily on the support of volunteer work.

CCCA provides services to victims of crime and trauma in the Clear Creek area.

and calling out chants asking the school board to provide them with a larger salary increase than is being offered. When the bell rang, teachers returned to their classrooms to educate their students.

In March, the Clear Creek County Education Association, the educators’ union, asked the school board for a 15% wage increase to provide them with a wage that would allow them to live in the county and would make up for the years when they received no raises or limited raises.

At the last bargaining session, the teachers asked for an 11% raise plus step increases, which equals about a 2% increase, and a $3 per hour increase added to every level of the classified staff salary schedule. The school board offered a 6.25% increase plus a step increase for teachers, and a 7.25% increase plus a step increase for classified staff.

A point of contention is how much money the school district has in its reserves that the teachers say could be put toward salaries. The union says there’s more money than the school district says there is.

“We think using a reasonable amount of the reserves that is sustainable for a few years makes sense considering how far behind we are in salaries,” Jill Stansbury, vice president of the teachers union, said.

Superintendent Karen Quanbeck, who represents the school board in negotiations, said the board is working on a new offer, but board members are nervous about using too much reserve money for salaries because that pay increase might not be sustainable in the next few years.

Part of the problem with providing salary increases, both the teachers and administration agree, is the way education is funded from the state. The school district is projecting a decrease in enrollment for the 2022-23 school year, which means even less money to operate the district.

“To give a compensation increase that is larger than we know we can support after a few years doesn’t make fiscal sense,” Quanbeck explained.

By the numbers In the 2021-22 school year in Clear Creek, a teacher with a bachelor’s degree and no teaching experience

earns $38,709, while the starting salary in Jeffco Public Schools is $43,274 and in Platte Canyon is $37,030.

A 15% increase would bring the starting salary for Clear Creek teachers to $44,515 in the 2022-23 school year. If teachers received an 11% salary increase, the salary for a teacher with no experience and a bachelor’s degree would move to $42,967. If the teachers received a 6.25% salary increase, that same teacher would make $41,128.

District staff missed out on raises on and off over the last decade when the district didn’t have money in its budget to afford salary increases.

However, the district made salary increases a priority since 2016-17, when a teacher with a bachelor’s degree and no experience had a starting salary of $32,000.

Walk-in at Carlson More than a dozen staff, parents and community members — wearing red for education — stood in front of Carlson Elementary Monday morning, holding signs that said, “The future of the world is in my classroom,” “Walk-in for our students” and “Invest in Education.”

They chanted slogans such as, “You left us no choice. We have to use our teacher voice,” “Teachers and families must unite. Education is a right.”

Teachers said they wanted a professional wage so they could afford to live where they work, noting that the salaries they make don’t allow them to live in Clear Creek County.

Andrea Tibbets, who lives in Idaho Springs but has no students in the schools, said she joined the walk-in because the school district has a history of not retaining teachers because of pay.

“We have good teachers now,” she said. “We need to pay them a living wage.”

Nick Juenemann, a former Carlson paraprofessional and now a parent, said he understood the educators’ struggle, noting that they could drive down the hill for better pay rather than staying in Clear Creek.

He considered teacher turnover the school district’s biggest problem.

Parent Shantell Gurley dropped her daughter off and then picked up a sign to stand in solidarity with the teachers.

“I agree we need good educators,” Gurley said. “To do that, we have to pay them good wages.”

City supports CDOT’s grant application for Floyd Hill funding Idaho Springs officials are signing a letter of support for the Colorado Department of Transportation’s grant application for the Interstate 70 Floyd Hill project.

According to CDOT officials at a May 9 City Council work session, the project is estimated at more than $700 million. The agency has secured $460 million thus far.

CDOT is applying for a federal grant for the remaining $240 million, and the deadline is May 23.

In the meantime, CDOT and its contractors — the same ones who worked on the Veterans Memorial Tunnels — will complete a final design for the project’s first phase.

CDOT has broken down the entire project, which will range from exit 248 at Beaver Brook to exit 241 at Colorado Boulevard, into three packages or phases. The first will be the eastern most section, and CDOT is hoping to start construction next spring.

The second and third are slated for fall 2023 and early 2024, respectively.

CDOT’s Kurt Kionka and his colleagues confirmed there won’t be any lane closures during peak times.

The project will also include Greenway improvements and wildlife safety mitigation, including a fence along I-70 between Evergreen and Floyd Hill. Kionka said CDOT is also adding an eastbound climbing lane for trucks and other slow-moving vehicles.

Hearing continued for Miner Street rafting permit At its May 9 meeting, the City Council approved an ordinance first reading for a conditional use permit allowing rafting at 1743 Miner St. The council also continued the public hearing to the second reading, which will be May 23, to allow staff members time to investigate whether the applicants can start and end rafting trips at the property.

City staff and the planning commission recommended approving the permit application, but with several conditions, including no trailers taking rafts in and out of the small parking lot.

The Costellos of Mile Hi Rafting plan to operate a rafting company and a bike shop at the location. They said they plan to only offer three rafting trips a day a few hours apart, so there’s no overlap with customer vehicles in the parking lot.

They have signed an agreement for off-site rafting storage, where employees will park as well.

Although Mile Hi Rafting was planning to host trips between Upper Dumont and Courtney-Ryley-Cooper Park, Dan Costello said it’d be easier to put in and take out rafts at the business rather than CRC Park.

However, city officials noted that a neighboring business’ permit restricts from putting in and taking out rafts along Miner Street, although no one remembered exactly why.

Costello said, if allowed, he’d start trips in Upper Dumont, raft to Miner Street, and tie up the rafts there to use for more advanced trips down the canyon. He wasn’t planning to put in or take out rafts at the location, exactly; but if necessary, he’d use a flat-bed truck to move them rather than a trailer.

City officials were going to investigate whether and why that would be restricted, noting that the adjacent property could reapply if Mile Hi Rafting’s use was allowed.

King-Murphy, Carlson students join for Field Day at CCHS

Controlled, fun chaos best describes the annual field day for King-Murphy and Carlson elementary school students.

The event, organized by physical education teacher Mike Patrizi, had something for everyone from jump rope and hula hoops to kickball and soccer to a game called drip-dripdrench, a wet take on duck-duckgoose that Patrizi called “super goofy.”

On the afternoon of May 13, the third through sixth graders at the two elementary schools played together, getting to know each other as they got some exercise and enjoyed the sunny, windy day.

The fifth and sixth graders helped lead games for the younger children in the morning before having the afternoon to partake in the games themselves. Patrizi said the wind made some of the games more

daunting, so changes were made as the day progressed.

The students said they had fun, though those who were wet from drip-drip-drench were a bit chilly thanks to the wind. They agreed they liked to be able to move among the different games.

“Field Day mixes the two schools, and that’s the goal of the whole event,” Patrizi said. “They get to play games with their friends. It’s a nice celebration before summer.”

Georgetown’s new shop feels like ‘permanent farmers market’

This summer, Clear Creek residents won’t have to go to a farmers market to find locally sourced foods and products.

After a few years of working farmers markets himself and meeting a lot of local producers, Chef’s Corner owner Marty Anklam wanted to offer the same products but in a permanent location.

The specialty grocery store and deli/butcher shop, located at 406 Sixth St. in Georgetown, offers a variety of meats, cheeses, honeys, jams, sauces and other products. Anklam opened the store in late April, and said he’s planning to expand his deli/butcher side of the business, and eventually offer personal chef services.

Anklam, who’s been a chef for 20 years, moved to Georgetown last year as a central location to work at Denver-area and mountain-town farmers markets. After spending more time in Georgetown, he felt it’d be a good location to open the shop he’d been considering for years.

So far, he said there’s been a good response from the community, and he’s seen a good mix of locals and tourists stopping through.

Along with locally sourced food products, Chef’s Corner also offers kitchen utensils and tools, such as tea infusers, French presses, cutting boards, and knives. It also has a few other non-food-related items, such as jewelry and candles, all of which are Colorado products.

If there’s anything else people would like to see in the store, Anklam said he’s taking requests and suggestions.

His overall goal in starting Chef’s Corner was to offer fun, locally made items for Clear Creek residents and visitors so “they can have restaurant-quality food at home,” he described.

“I’m excited to be a part of the community,” Anklam continued.

“To be able to pass on my culinary knowledge and experience… is a lot of fun.”

Chef’s Corner is open 11 a.m.-6 p.m. every day.

Loveland closes for season after ‘return to normalcy’ After a shortened season and another with major restrictions, Loveland Ski Area staff and patrons were happy to have a “return to normalcy” over the 2021-22 season, marketing director John Sellers said.

Loveland Ski Area closed for the season on May 8, with hundreds of snow-lovers hoping to get in one last run before summer gets underway.

While the ski area started off the 2021-22 season under the countywide mask mandate, there were no other restrictions otherwise, Sellers detailed. The cafeterias and bars were open to capacity, which Loveland didn’t do last year. There was also plenty of music on the weekends, and the on-mountain cabins were open as well.

Overall, Sellers described, it was a good season with plenty of events back on the calendar.

I

n the Introduction to “The Republic of Imagination,” Professor Azar Nafisi relates an anecdote about a young Iranian ex-pat she calls “Ramin” who, at a book promotion event, basically told her she was wasting her time. Americans, he said, are very different than Iranians.

He insisted that Americans are from another world and don’t care about books. His words haunted Dr. Nafisi over the years. A decade later, she rebutted Ramin in that Introduction arguing that America still has an imaginative and curious ethos and points to those who haunt bookstores, go to readings and read in the quiet and privacy of their homes as evidence. But with the zealous crusade to ban book after book not only from schools but now from public libraries intensifying from smoldering to burning, I cannot help but find myself in sympathy with the young man’s point.

In his classic novel “Fahrenheit 451,” Ray Bradbury created an eerie but poignant scene in which the Firemen arrive at Mrs. Blake’s house after a neighbor denounced her to the authorities for having books. After dousing her cherished library with kerosene, they order

e, as Americans, are imprinted at an early age to work, work, work. We put in long hours in our working years, accept overtime readily, and even at times work more than one job to support our families and add to the nest egg we need to retire.

When that time comes, though, it can be harder than we think to give up that routine of work, work, work. That engrained effort to keep moving, to do more, to accumulate more is difficult to simply give up in retirement.

A recent trip to Ireland and my current work for a company based in Europe have highlighted for me this ever-present need in the U.S. to work long hours and never take time off as our duty to support our needs and wants. In Europe they have a much stronger emphasis on the person and family. The workdays are shorter. The days start later. There is a push to take time off to recharge and spend time with family. There is no rollover of vacation time. They encourage you to take time off. As we put our nose to the grindstone, we forget that we need time to recharge

“Fahrenheit 451” is a chilling tale despite its heated message. Bradbury wrote it eight years after the most notorious of book burners were defeated. But the climate in America then was hardly free and open. It was the McCarthyism era, a shameful period of our past that was also an ominous prescient preview of America in the third decade of the twentieth-first century. We are, despite George Santayana’s warning, in danger of repeating that past because we haven’t learned the lessons from it.

so we just pile money towards to the goal of retirement without thinking of the now. We stockpile vacation time and roll it over year after year. When the time comes to retire, yes, we have the money we need but at what cost?

We age and our body takes the brunt of the long hours and stressful work environment that we never let ourselves get away from. When retirement comes, we become lost and find ourselves floundering for what to do. During our working years we sacrificed our hobbies and pastimes to increase the dollars in our account. So, it comes to this, we need to not only prepare our bank account but prepare our minds and bodies for retirement.

Do not give up hobbies and pastimes for longer work hours and increased pay. Listen to your body

and take care of your health before the stress and work have made irreparable damage. Take the time off to recharge and destress before you get to the point of retirement and lash out at others because we have forgotten how to relax. Look inward and take stock of your mental state.

Taking care of your body, mind, and soul as a preparation for retirement can prevent you from feeling that emptiness and the question of “What do I do now?”

Of course, we all know that money is important, but the preservation of our mental and physical health is just as vital as we approach retirement. Using tools such as meditation, aromatherapy and prayer can be exercises to rejuvenate our mental health. Walking and time outdoors can revitalize our physical state.

Seeing our primary health provider along with holistic modalities such as acupuncture, massage and Reiki can maintain our physical state and address chronic conditions we have left untreated over the years of our career. Looking inward as we approach retirement or as we have just retired can be enlightening so that

The burning question each citizen must answer is how they will respond to the censoring. One powerful strategy is reading and talking openly about books under assault.

I sardonically quip that in a way I should thank the banners for helping me to compile my reading list. Some of the proscribed books I have read, but many, especially newer ones on the scene, I haven’t. Yet. Not all are my normal cup of literary tea, but then my curiosity prompts me to dig into them to see what the fuss is all about. Unsurprisingly, I keep finding that it is, as the Bard once wrote, much ado about nothing.

“You don’t have to burn books to destroy a culture,” Bradbury said.

“Just get people to stop reading them.”

Indeed. We are at a crossroad. To paraphrase Hamlet, to read unfetteredly or not to. That is the burning question before us.

Plan for your future but do not forget the present. Retirement should be a reward for our years of working not become a burden to our heart and mind. Retirement is meant to be an end goal of our career achievements not a chaotic void where we look to fill the loss of our unattained benchmarks. Retirement is about appreciating the work life we had but the ability to let it go. In our golden years we should be enjoying our life, friends, and family and reaping the rewards of our arduous work. Look out for yourself, be kind to others and lets all help each other get to these years with a smile on our face.

Is it fair to equate book burning with book banning? Yes. The difference is merely a matter of degrees.

While banning does not physically destroy books, it has the same effect as burning. It is censorship, a form of silencing as Professor Nafisi contends.

“Book bans,” she posited in a Washington Post op-ed, “are canaries in coal mines — indicators of the direction in which a society is moving.”

She, like Ramin, ought to know, having borne debilitating afflictions at the hands of Iran’s theocratic censors and refusing to buckle.

Book banning is more than silencing writers and depriving readers, particularly the young, of the opportunity to learn about and debate the merits of ideas. It is a form of dumbing down. Students subjected to such bans will inherently have comparatively limited proficiencies in multiple areas vis-à-vis their unencumbered peers. Thus, they will be underprepared for the world in which they will soon be engaging as adults. The antithesis of what

Looking for Blue Sky

T

o me, the names Everest and Evans were interchangeable.

As a boy brought up under the billion-year-old granite massif of the Rocky Mountain Front Range, both signified the tallest mountain, either of the world or of my world. Both were the focus of a landscape: Everest, declared the world’s third pole, and Evans, the alpine height of my home hills. The difference of 15,000 feet is larger than Evans is high. Yet besides being linked in one kid’s imagination, there are important similarities between the mountains and their names besides starting with the same letters.

The mountain held an aloof presence in my childhood, occasionally popping into view around a bend in the road when I would exclaim that “I could see Mount Everest,” only to be corrected that I could see Evans.

Even now I can feel my eyes roll at the nitpicking. No land extended above that little arched peak extending from the high ridge. What was the difference?

Much of my life I would hold memories of a drive to its top — not possible on Everest — that I assumed had taken place far from my home, not simply above it. Visions of meadows and wide vistas crowded my mind, displaying a new and confusing sight. A view of familiar territory instead of from it. I was on the horizon looking back.

These memories are stored in a specific folder of local memories that feel alien, meadows that I have searched for with a zeal, never finding them but knowing they were nearby. The drive is still my only experience of altitude sickness and the elevation lent them a fairy quality of idyllic beauty.

This wonder has long been found in mountains, on both Evans and Everest. Both went unascended until foreigners arrived. For me it was a visit from my Indiana cousins that prompted the ascent. For Evans in

general, the painter Alfred Bierstadt was the first recorded to walk to its top, though one of the many Native Americans that crowd his painting of the mountain or their ancestors may have summited first. He referred to the peak as Mount Rosalie or Mont Rosa after the woman who he would marry and the famous Alp respectively, firmly planting the mountain in a colonial space. This was a mountain dedicated to people on the East Coast and a culture from Europe.

Mountains are the loci of land-

scapes. From their peaks you can map and survey new territory and change the cultural story of that land. The name Everest ties back to the British Sir George Everest, Surveyor General of India, a blatantly colonial occupation of mapping for political power. The name Everest ties back to Mallory and the tragic British attempts at the summit.

It grounds British history in the Himalayan landscape.

The names imprinted on the landscape of my home tell a similar story — one of conquest and native erasure. The peaks, in order of ascending elevation, were Squaw (the racist term for Native women), then Chief (the male equivalent), and above them Evans, which was renamed from Mount Rosalie to honor John Evans, the second territorial governor of Colorado who was forced to resign in 1865 for his participation in the Sand Creek Massacre which killed 230 native people. Stories rarely get clearer than that.

Although they are set in stone, the stories of a landscape are always changing. Earlier this year, Squaw was renamed Mestaa’ehehe Mountain, meaning Owl Woman in Cheyenne and honoring an influential translator in Colorado’s history. A bittersweet finish line Mauracher, McKown preparing for final track meet as Golddiggers

Sean Mauracher said what most high school seniors have been thinking lately: “I can’t believe it’s almost over.”

Clear Creek’s graduation is slated for May 21 — the same day Mauracher hopes to run the 100-meter dash at the state track meet.

He, fellow senior Annika McKown and other Golddiggers will be competing at the state track & field meet May 19-21 at Lakewood’s Jeffco Stadium.

Mauracher and McKown were named captains of Clear Creek’s track & field teams this season, as they’re among the few seniors who’ve been in the program since their freshman year, coach Brian Inman said.

He also noted how Mauracher was named Athlete of the Year among the league’s boys track & field athletes, which is a major honor for him. “(Mauracher and McKown) are two of the hardest workers on the SEE TRACK, P11

Peaks define land. The name Mount Evans is carried by the peak’s ridgeline, the batholith beneath it, and the wilderness area surrounding it.

Renaming it to Blue Sky will help to recognize the native peoples still part of this land and its future and in so doing set the mountain squarely in its own setting.

When the German-American Bierstadt painted what he would call Mount Rosalie, he depicted it like its

namesake Alp, the summit rising dramatically into the sky and out of reality. But Blue Sky is a name grounded in Colorado and the Front Range. It serves to sever the connection with Everest and dissipate some of the settler colonialism that remains embedded in the mountains of the American West.

For this mountain is not like Everest or even like Pikes Peak to the south. It is not a well defined separated summit, isolated and reaching towards the sky. It is the tip of a much larger area, simply the highest point on a large ridge. First among near equals. It is not the alps-esque

spire of Bierstadt’s imagination, significant due to its isolation, but a slower build that points to the verticality and sloping nature of the land all around it. It does not jutfrom the landscape but is holistically part of it. It is defining yet driveable. It is a monument not to itself but to the land around it. It is an indicator or landmark of a place, not only its own dramatic beauty. This is Mount Blue Sky. McKown appreciated seeing so many people turn out for the 2022 track & field season, and Mauracher added that he’s seen everyone’s progress in terms of skill- and character-building.

He felt he was leaving the program in good hands, saying the younger athletes have demonstrated a strong sense of sportsmanship and work ethic this season.

With the literal and proverbial finish line in sight, McKown and Mauracher are hoping for one last chance to bring home gold medals as Golddiggers at the May 19-21 state meet.

“It’s bittersweet to be finishing up,” McKown said. “It’s been a cool four years.”

Section 1 . The above and foregoing Recitals are incorporated herein by reference and are adopted as findings and determinations of the City Council.

Section 2 . The Property known as 1743 Miner Street, Idaho Springs, Colorado, is allowed a Conditional Use for the operation of a river rafting business River Outfitter as defined by Article II, Chapter 11 of the ISMC , with the following conditions and limitations: 1. No rafts, boats, in atables, patrons, or employees of any rafting operation shall be allowed to enter or exit Clear Creek at this location.

2. No housing, camping or overnight residential use related to the rafting operation of any type may occur on the property; this restriction does not apply to the existing residential unit located on the lower level of the existing building on the property.

3. A ll loading and unloading activities (rafts, vans, patrons etc.) associated with the rafting operation shall occur completely within the property and not upon Miner Street, the ad acent property and its parking lot or any other ad acent area, and there shall be no backing of any vehicle (van, patron or otherwise) onto Miner Street 4. A ll storage shall be within the existing building or within the fenced in area. Trailers are not permitted to be stored anywhere on the site.

5. No buses or towed trailers may access or use the site, for any length of time.

6. A Lease (or valid renewal) for all off-site storage of the vehicles and trailers associated with the business must be verified annually at the Compliance Review conducted by the Planning Commission.

7. Prior to the occupancy and use of the Property under this Conditional Use Permit, the parking lot must be restriped per an updated site plan that complies with the ISMC. 8. Prior to the commencement of operations under this Permit in 2023 and each subsequent calendar year, the A pplicant shall appear before the Idaho Springs Planning Commission for a Compliance Review to review the operation’s compliance with all relevant requirements the prior year/rafting season and plans for the current year/rafting season. The Compliance Review is not a formal public hearing, but an informal review and discussion. The City may not take any official oning action, such as revocation of this Conditional Use approval, without complying with all procedural, notice and hearing requirements applicable thereto under Chapter 21, ISMC. Nothing herein shall be construed to limit the City’s authority to initiate a revocation proceeding under ISMC Ch. 21 at any other time of the year as the circumstances merit.

Nothing herein constitutes approval of any use of any type not specified by this Ordinance. Any such alternative use would require its own distinct Conditional Use approval, if so required by the Code.

Section 3. Upon the effectiveness of this Ordinance, the City Clerk is directed to record a copy of this Ordinance, together with the A pplication approved hereby, with the Clear Creek County Clerk and Recorder, and the City Planner is directed to reference the Conditional Use approved hereby on the City of Idaho Springs Z oning Map. Section 4. A ny and all Ordinances or parts thereof in con ict or inconsistent herewith are, to the extent of such con ict or inconsistency, hereby repealed; provided, however, that the repeal of any such Ordinance or part thereof shall not revive any other section or part of any Ordinance heretofore repealed or superseded.

Section 5 . Should any one or more sections or provisions of this Ordinance be udicially determined invalid or unenforceable, such udgment shall not affect, impair or invalidate the remaining provisions of this Ordinance, the intention being that the various provisions are severable.

Through a combination of effec-

tive pitching and strong hitting, the Golddiggers beat the Thunder 10-6.

Going into the May 11 game at Byers, the Golddiggers were now 10-8 on the season and 7-4 in league play. After Byers, Clear Creek was scheduled to host Platte Canyon on May 17 in its final game of the regular season.

Free school meal program on November ballot Costs for program would come from limiting tax deductions for high-income earners

Colorado voters will decide this November whether to cover the cost of school meals for all students.

All Colorado students have had access to free lunch over the last two years thanks to pandemicrelated federal waivers that are set to expire this summer. During that time, many school districts reported more students eating lunch, sometimes as many as 40% more

than in pre-pandemic times.

Lawmakers have sent a measure to the voters that would bring in an additional $101 million a year by limiting tax deductions for highincome earners. Those new state funds would supplement additional federal dollars that schools can claim by participating in the community eligibility program. Rather than relying on families filling out applications for subsidized lunches, school districts could use eligibility for programs like Medicaid and food stamps to count children in poverty and get more meals covered.

In addition to covering the costs of school meals, participating school districts could also get money to buy healthy local foods, raise wages for food service workers, upgrade equipment, and train

workers to prepare healthy meals.

The proposal would create the Healthy School Meals for All program. House Bill 1414 passed both chambers with bipartisan support, though many Republicans voted no.

By getting lawmakers to place the measure on the ballot, supporters save time and money they would have spent gathering signatures.

However, there would be a gap year before the program starts.

Schools wouldn’t have access to any extra money for the 2022-23 school year. The Democratic sponsors of the measure had originally backed a bill that would have used state money to fill in that gap, but it stalled due to concerns about ongoing costs.

Backers of the initiative, such as Hunger Free Colorado, say offering free lunch to all students reduces

stigma and shame and encourages participation, while relieving cash-strapped families of one more expense.

Some Republican lawmakers objected to asking a small percentage of taxpayers to pay for something that families should be providing and that many parents can afford.

The proposal would limit state income tax deductions for taxpayers earning $300,000 or more. Individuals would be limited to $12,000 and joint filers to $16,000.

The measure does not require the governor’s signature to appear on the ballot. The referred measure only requires a simple majority to become law.
