Arlie Everett Askelson

January 18, 1933 - April 17, 2022

Arlie Everett Askelson, age 89, passed away at sunrise on Easter morning. His sons Erik and Kirk were by his side as he joined his beloved wife Ardys who had passed a little over a year ago. Arlie, born on January 18, 1933, in Clay County, Minnesota, was the eldest son of Earnie and Adeline Askelson. He often recounted the wonderful life of growing up and working on the farm with his family.

Arlie was active in High School including band, yearbook and FFA. After graduating High School, Arlie attended the University of North Dakota, getting his bachelors degree and participating in ROTC. He joined the Air Force after college and was stationed for a time in Alaska. He told many tales of the work he did on airplanes and the fun he had exploring the Alaska wilderness.

After the Air Force, Arlie moved to Denver

working for St.Paul Insurance, where he happened to have a secretary named Ardys. The stars aligned and they married on New Years Day 1960.

Two years later, their family was complete with Erik and Kirk. Arlie supported and encouraged all the boys’ interests; dirt biking, horses, beekeeping, various pets, learning construction and anything sport related. Arlie never missed attending a sporting event, even throughout his grandkid’s sports. He was always their number one fan.

Arlie is survived by his sons Erik (Kathleen) and Kirk, grandchildren Luke (Rachel), Kaitlin (Ian), Hunter, Kenny, great grandson River, brother Dennis, brother Bernie and sister Karol.

the red carpet. Plus, some members of the group are literally crowned and recognized by their peers.

About 120 Clear Creek High School students and guests attended Prom 2022 April 23 at the Crystal Rose on Golden’s Lookout Mountain. There were lots of twinkling lights and starry decor, as this year’s theme was “Written in the Stars.”

There, the seniors crowned Caden Vogt and Rose Miller as prom king and queen. Juniors Isaiah Herrygers and Samantha Zebroski were also named prom prince and princess.

While prom is more formal in concept, it doesn’t have to feel that way in execution. CCHS students enjoyed forming dance circles during “Billie Jean,” performing “The Cha Cha Slide” and taking silly photos in the photo booth. Thus, the event felt like a perfect mixture of the formal and the familiar.

The truck saw great response to its opening weekend. It sold out at the El Rancho Home Depot and the Clear Creek rec center in three hours. It’s also received a lot of positive online reviews, Carranza commented.

Because the truck will be in different locations every weekend, Carranza will announce the locations each week on the truck’s Facebook page.

The Lawson Adventure Park & Resort staff is also planning to buy a second truck to host on the west side of the property.

plained. The grille house launched right before the pandemic started, and now it’s added Carranza’s signature style to its menu.

Carranza said his favorite dish is the street tacos, which was modeled after his family’s Guatemalan-style cooking. Books said his favorite was the grille house’s Nashville hot chicken sandwich.

The Adventure Basecamp Bar & Grille House is open 8 a.m.-8 p.m.

Georgetown Loop opens for 2022 season after record ridership last year While the weather may have been on the chilly side, the Georgetown Loop Railroad staff was happy to host the 2022 opening weekend on April 23-25.

Over the winter, the railroad updated lighting and other aspects of the Lebanon Mine for its tours.

It also started construction work on a deck car. Crews are turning it into a coach car with sides, a roof and seating. It’ll be an open-air car during the nicer weather and staff can install windows for the Santa Train in November and December.

“It can easily convert from sum-

mer to winter,” General Manager Mark Graybill said. “Only three of our cars can do that right now. So, it’ll be a great addition and allow us to add more capacity.”

The staff plans to have it finished in time for the 2023 season.

Additionally, the Georgetown Loop plans to run a steam engine almost every day until the end of October, Graybill stated.

The steam-powered engines started work earlier this month, as the train was rented out for a birthday party before opening weekend.

Graybill described how the railroad usually doesn’t run steam until midMay, because the engines are older and require more manpower and money to fix.

But, ridership has been strong enough to justify using them earlier this year, he continued.

“Last year, we had a record 241,000 riders,” he said. “And, this year’s bookings are surpassing last year’s. … We’re very optimistic (about the 2022 season), and we appreciate all the support from the community.”

CLEAR CREEK SCHOOL BOARD BRIEFS

School board considers drawing down reserves The Clear Creek school board is considering pulling $1 million from its reserves, and the district’s facilities team has plans on how to spend it.

Currently, the school district has a high percentage of money in reserve accounts — 86% of its adopted budget expenditures — when board policy says that amount should be 15%. Reserve accounts are like savings accounts. Superintendent Karen Quanbeck has said that 15% is too little but 86% is too high to pay district bills in the event of an emergency.

District business manager Hollie Harlan recommended to the board at its April 14 work session that the reserves should be at 42%, which would equate to $4.5 million. The school board will need to change district policy to adopt a new percentage.

To bring the reserves to 42%, the district could pull $3.1 million in one-time dollars, and Harlan is recommending taking the first $1 million out in the 2022-23 school year. She said the reserves are high thanks to grant dollars and additional funding the school district has received in the last few years.

Quanbeck said while the two bonds approved by voters in the last several years has paid for a number of projects and a new elementary school, the district has even more

projects that have been pushed off. “(The $33 million bond) is very specifically for projects that are essential to who we are as a district,” Quanbeck said, “but it doesn’t scratch the surface on projects that have been building up

over the years.”

Justin Watanbe, the district’s director of maintenance, has suggested that the district spend $1.17 million in this manner: • $350,000 to replace the KingMurphy preschool playground, which is important since the district is adding a second preschool classroom to the building. A $5 million bond approved by voters in 2018 paid to replace the playgrounds at the district’s three elementary schools but not the preschool playground at King-Murphy. Carlson will get a new preschool playground when the new school is built inside the former middle school thanks to the $33 million bond approved by voters in 2021.

• $727,000 to replace the roof at King-Murphy: Watanabe said the roof is past its useful life and needs to be addressed.

• $44,000 to replace the kitchen hood suppression system and exhaust system at King-Murphy: Watanabe said the two systems are past their useful lives, and parts are no longer available to replace worn or broken parts.

• $25,000 to pay for a site master place for the ball fields and parking

lot at Clear Creek High School: Watanabe said the baseball field needs a lot of work, in addition to making plans for other improvements behind CCHS. • $25,000 to hire an expert to look at cracks in the high school building: “The building isn’t falling down,” Watanabe told the board. “Those cracks could have been there for years, but no one has addressed them. We need to get a structural engineer to take a look.”

Filling a school board member seat The Clear Creek school board needs to appoint a new board member from the west part of the district.

Larry Pyers, who has served on the board for four years, has resigned, citing a change in his personal circumstances.

An application letter from those living in District E must be submitted to Athena Iglesias or Robin Payne by noon May 4. The letter should include information about qualifications and reasons for applying.

The board expects to interview prospective candidates at a public meeting at 9 a.m. May 13.

Negotiations continue on staff compensation The Clear Creek school board is in the midst of negotiations with the district’s unions with compensation in mind.

Teachers have asked for a 15% salary increase for the 2022-23 school year, while the support staff asked to increase the hourly wage to $20.

The compensation package for all employees must be incorporated into the next year’s budget that must be approved in June.

Teachers, including representatives of the Clear Creek County Education Association and education support professionals, spoke at the March 15 school board meeting, explaining that while they loved their jobs, they needed to be paid not just a living wage, but what one educator called a professional wage.

Superintendent Karen Quanbeck said at the April 14 meeting that while many differences exist between the Clear Creek and Jeffco school districts, Clear Creek still competes for educators, especially where salary is concerned. She added, though, that Clear Creek implementing a four-day school week in August should help with teacher retention.

“We always do our best work to pay our educators and all staff in Clear Creek wages that are sustainable,” Quanbeck said. “We are not yet competitive with surrounding districts.”

In honor of Colorado Parks & Wildlife’s 125th anniversary this year, the Clear Creek Courant and the Canyon Courier will have a monthly photo page celebrating the state’s amazing wildlife and parks. Each page will celebrate a different local animal or group of animals, including fun facts provided by CPW. For April, the mountain newspapers are celebrating Colorado’s bighorn sheep.

BIGHORN SHEEP FUN FACTS: • The Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep is Colorado’s state animal and the mammalian symbol of Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Colorado is home to the largest population of the species anywhere.

• The three largest bighorn sheep herds in the state are: the Purgatorie Canyon herd with approximately 475 sheep; the Spanish Peaks herd at 400; and the Georgetown herd at 350.

• Additionally, the Mount Evans herd is composed of 180 animals.

The herd in Grant, which is the Park County side of Guanella Pass, is estimated to have 55 sheep.

• Ewes weigh 120-200 pounds and have spike-like horns. They are segregated from adult rams, execept during the rut.

• Rams weigh about 150-250 pounds, and the massive, coiled horns of mature rams may make up to 10 percent of their body weight. Young rams join bands of rams when they are 2 or 3 years old.

• Rams achieve “full curl” at about seven or eight years of age. Rams battle each other, cracking horns, to test dominance within the herd.

• “Brooming” is the term used to describe the chipping and fraying of horns, usually caused by fighting.

Some brooming may be caused by accidents or digging.

• Bighorn sheep typically occur in steep, high mountain terrain. In Colorado, they prefer habitat dominated by grass, low shrubs, rock cover and areas near open escape. They often retreat to rest on inaccessible cliffs, such as those in South Jeffco’s Waterton Canyon.

• In Clear Creek County, sheep are frequently seen along Interstate 70 and U.S. Highway 40. The Colorado Department of Transportation plans to install a wildlife overpass near Empire this year to create a safer crossing for the sheep. The bridge will be over U.S. 40 near the I-70 interchange.

The area has seen several wildlifevehicle collisions in recent years, and stakeholders wish to protect the local bighorn sheep and other animals.

• Georgetown hosts an annual bighorn sheep festival every second weekend of November. The event includes crafts, sheep-spotting activities, educational programs, hikes, and more.

Don’t be bait for the bad guys

I

regularly catch two to three per hour and sometimes I can net dozens in a single day. Not to mention the occasional overnight haul. And such a variety!

“We’ve been trying to reach you ... you are entitled to compensation!”

Or “Click here to check the status of your command.” And “Claim your complimentary chips to play at Lucky Casino!” Plus, what catch would be complete without the ubiquitous offers of coupons, discounts and even more free stuff?

I’m referring, of course, to phish, phishing emails to be exact. Phishing is the fraudulent practice by cybercriminals of using emails to induce people like you and me to willingly — and usually unwittingly — provide our personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers.

These emails often appear to come from reputable organizations. I get a spam net full of emails from recognizable “sources” such as Amazon, Kohl’s, Walgreens, GEICO and CVS ... some of which I actually do

patronize. By the way, the “command” referenced above means my “order” from Amazon.

I’m often threatened by the “IRS,” by any number of virus detection companies, “PayPal,”... on and on and on.

“Someone has run Andrea Doray a background check on you!” or “Negative items have been added to your credit report!”

To combat truly awful consequences, I must “Take action NOW or [fill in the blank with disaster]!” Some emails are elaborately engineered, mirroring organizations’ actual graphics (known as spoofing) to reel in even more than my personal info ... I must send money orders or Bitcoin to retain my protection, avoid arrest or – gasp! – risk exposure for my supposed online viewing behavior.

Outlook email accounts cast wide nets, snaring most of these nefarious messages in spam filters, which I then promptly report. But here’s the thing about phishing emails: our spam-catchers are overwhelmed.

Researchers estimate that of the 15 billion emails sent to our unsuspecting inboxes daily, more than 45 percent (and perhaps up to 75 percent) of this global content is spam. That’s a pretty big kettle.

So I’d like to be your guide to spotting – and catching – phishing emails before something rotten happens.

First, always check domain names ... that is, where the email is being sent and where it’s coming from.

For example, I received a phishing email to “dzdvffsd52az0@gmail. com.” Hmmm. And the sender?

“Skinny199811@googlemail.com.”

Surprisingly, I don’t know Skinny 199811 (and googlemail.com is not a legitimate domain).

Grammar and spelling errors are rampant, as is unusual language — that “command” instead of “order,”

for instance. And one of the most recognizable hooks is urgency: Act NOW or something really really bad is going to happen to you, even if it’s missing out on one of the best offers you’ve ever received in your whole entire life.

Don’t bite! If you’re concerned, or maybe just curious, input the URL of the organization by hand to check if something is truly amiss.

I also still receive the “foreign prince” emails from kind-hearted souls around the globe who desire to leave their substantial inherited wealth only to me ... if I provide my bank account for the deposit.

But today’s sharks are much more sophisticated. With one in every 99 emails likely to be a phishing attack, without a strong line of defense, we’re all often little more than bait.

Clear Creek soccer loses 1-7 to Denver Christian

The Clear Creek girls soccer team knew taking on Denver Christian wouldn’t be an easy task, but any potential Golddigger victory gradually slipped away with each Thunder goal.

Denver Christian won the April 21 game at Golddigger Stadium 7-1, with Clear Creek’s sole goal coming with only 30 seconds left in the first half.

Throughout the first half, the Golddiggers struggled to maintain possession and get the ball downfield. The team did better in the second half, with a several corner kicks and a shot-on-goal attempt that went high and wide.

At the other end, Denver Christian’s offense was merciless. The Thunder’s speed and clean passes helped them get plenty of open looks.

While seven attempts found the back of the net and others went wide, Clear Creek goalie Zoey Zebroski had 14 saves for the game.

and grit. If Clear Creek keeps playing like this, it should easily win its four remaining games of the regular season, including a game at Dawson.

Clear Creek is still dealing “with a bunch of nagging injuries,” as Ebert described it. Fourteen Golddiggers played against Denver Christian, as six were out with injuries.

If the Golddiggers can stay healthy — or at least adjust their strategy based on who’s available

— Ebert believes Clear Creek will end the regular season no worse than 11-4, which could be the soccer program’s best record ever.

Zebroski and Cade described how much the team has grown since last year. They attributed it to playing together so much, and understanding each other’s strengths and weaknesses.

“I’m so proud of our team,” Cade continued. “ … It’s crazy to see what we can do now.”

SCOPE OF SERVICES Clear Creek County Engineering & Design of Broadband Fiber in Georgetown Colorado • Architectural design services, if needed; • Design/engineering services to complete the Georgetown fiber “loop” structure, hand holes, splice points, and connectivity access to public facilities; • Project management: Provide complete project management support inclusive of OAC meetings, coordination, project administration, scheduling, budgeting, design review and final design report and prints; • Onsite Supervision: Should remaining funds exist, provide construction oversight during a portion or all of the construction installation; construction oversight to ensure installation is completed per design/engineering plans; • Provide all insurance requirements in accordance with Clear Creek County standards; • Provide a payment and performance bond in accordance with Colorado law; • Include an Owner’s reserve and contingency amount to be controlled by Clear Creek County; each shall be 10% of the total GMP; • In the design/engineering, selected firm shall review and become familiar with the Town of Georgetown building codes for installation and make recommendations as needed to ensure cost effective installation of fiber, e.g. trenching versus microtrenching.

We’re looking for an ambitious journalist who is passionate about local news and loves to chase down important stories and tell them in a way that connects with readers on multiple platforms.

The right candidate must also be able to shoot and edit images and post content to social media platforms. Video skills are a plus.

Responsibilities include: • Generating six stories a week.

• Demonstrating effective use of social media tools to source stories and drive traffic to website and print products.

• Ensuring accuracy, objectivity, fairness and correct spelling in all reporting.

• Meeting deadlines without exception.

• Working collaboratively with other reporters on shared editorial projects.
