Clear Creek’s Parker Scott finishes third at Skimeister Proponents make case to rename Mount Evans Clear Creek officials to hear public comment March 8 BY CORINNE WESTEMAN CWESTEMAN@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
restrictions cut the season short. Skimeister was a title bestowed based on a skier’s performance throughout the season. When the shortened 2020-21 season didn’t allow for a clear winner, Colorado developed the Skimeister Championships at the tail-end of the season. Inman said the state’s ski coaches voted to hold it again this year, and there’s a strong possibility it will continue indefinitely. Only six Golddiggers — about half of the school’s ski team — competed
Proponents for the five official petitions to rename Mount Evans presented their respective cases before the Clear Creek County Board of Commissioners on March 1. The five petitions are: Mount Cheyenne-Arapaho, Mount Blue Sky, Mount Rosalie, Mount Soule, and Mount Evans but redesignating the namesake as Anne Evans. The mountain is named for Colorado’s second territorial governor, John Evans, who’s believed to have authorized the Sand Creek Massacre against the Cheyenne and Arapaho people. He was forced to resign in its aftermath. The commissioners were scheduled to host a public comment session via Zoom at 6 p.m. March 8, and are still accepting written public comment on whether and which petition to support. The commissioners then plan to make a recommendation to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names at their March 15 meeting. Clear Creek can register its opinion as: • Opposed to changing the name; • Neutral; • Supportive of a name change;

Golddiggers conclude ski season in Steamboat Springs BY CORINNE WESTEMAN CWESTEMAN@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
Three Clear Creek skiers placed in the top 10 at the March 1 Skimeister Championships in Steamboat Springs. Junior Parker Scott and senior Camden Fahnline placed third and
seventh, respectively, among the boys; and freshman Addyson Scott placed 10th among the girls. “Both Parker and Camden were as good as I‘ve seen them all year,” coach Brian Inman said on March 2. Both Parker and Addyson Scott qualified to compete in the junior nationals March 11-13 at Lake Tahoe, Inman explained. Only 12 boys and 12 girls from Colorado qualified to attend. Inman explained that the Skimeister event is relatively new. Colorado’s high school ski programs devised it last year, after COVID-19
