2021 was a strange year in Clear Creek County. Along with enduring a wet spring, smoky summer and unusually dry fall, residents tried to be flexible as the COVID-19 pandemic continued. there were plenty of victories to celebrate too, including the gold-medal kind. Here’s a recap of some of the biggest news stories the Clear Creek Courant covered in 2021. Clear Creek adjusts to ‘new normal’ as COVID-19 pandemic continues Like much of the world, Clear Creek residents struggled to navigate an ever-changing environment as the COVID-19 pandemic persisted

for a second year. Clear Creek and other Colorado counties distributed COVID-19 vaccines in tiers, based on age-, health- and job-related risks. By spring, all Coloradans 16 and older were eligible for vaccines. In the fall, children were eligible to receive vaccines and adults were encouraged to get booster shots. SEE REVIEW, P4

Reaching for the stars Evergreen woman goes into space, following in the footsteps of her astronaut dad

skiing trips each year, the only time Laura remembers the entire family together because Alan was training all the time. Over the years, she’s been a board member of the Evergreen Area Chamber of Commerce, the Evergreen Arts Foundation, Hiwan Homeowners Association and the Montessori School of Evergreen.

When Laura Shepard Churchley strapped herself in the Blue Origin rocket ship to travel into space in December, she says she felt right at home. Maybe that’s because as the daughter of Alan Shepard, the first American to travel into space, space flight is in Laura’s blood. “It felt like I had been doing it my whole life,” she said while sitting in the living room of her Evergreen home. “I knew I would go into space. I don’t know why.” Laura, 74, flew aboard the New Shepard named in honor of her father. In 11 minutes, the spacecraft took her and five additional crew members 66 miles above the Earth, about half the distance her father went 60 years prior in the MercuryRedstone 3. Alan was the second man and the first American to travel into space. In 1971, Alan commanded Apollo 14 and was the fifth person to walk on the moon, hitting two golf balls while there. “She got to follow in her dad’s footsteps,” said Laura’s husband of 25 years, Fred Churchley. “Knowing how much she loved and respected her dad, this is a full-circle moment for her — for her dad and his legacy. Five years ago, even a year ago, I didn’t think it could happen.” Laura’s daughter, Lark Stewart, said her mom had no doubt or fear about the space flight. “That’s how we were raised, how she was raised,” Stewart said, calling her mom generous and someone who doesn’t sit still. “Whatever she does, she does it with a big heart and a lot of energy,” Stewart said. “If she is awake, she is on.” A child of a NASA astronaut Laura remembers the moment her dad told the family in 1959 that he was going to be an astronaut for the newly created NASA, noting that no one in the family knew what that meant. “I looked up `astronaut’ in the dictionary,” she said, “and the word wasn’t there.” She knew, though, that her dad was very excited about the prospect of being among the first seven astronauts — known as the Mercury 7 — in the country.

11 minutes in history Laura said she was well prepared for her 11-minute space flight after 16 hours of intense training at the Blue Origin launch site in Van Horn, Texas. As she heard the countdown, her dad’s words were in her head: “Let’s light this candle.” She enjoyed blastoff because if reminded her of when she was a girl, and her dad drove his Corvette and floored it, pushing her back into the seat. She said space was beautiful and she could see the curve of the Earth, the blackness of space and the blue atmosphere. Being weightless was fun, as she and her fellow crew members did flips and threw small footballs in honor of retired football player Michael Strahan, who was also on the flight. “As Daddy said, `We came back to Earth safely,’” Laura explained. She took items into space for her grandchildren because not many people can say their grandmother went into space. “Daddy would have loved that I did this,” she said. “He would have said, `Go for it.’”

When Alan left for his first flight into space in 1961, Laura told him to have a good trip — similar to what her grandchildren said as she was leaving for the Blue Origin flight. Laura, an eighth grader in boarding school, was in the middle of an English test when her dad made his first voyage into space. She says she knew everything would go well, though she was mortified at being sent to the headmaster’s house to watch the flight with a room full of the school’s dignitaries. She was more concerned she would have to talk to them. After Alan’s flight ended, Laura said she was happy and a bit tearyeyed, not really caring anymore about the English test. The Shepard family’s notoriety was something to get used to, and

she’s been to the White House twice with her dad. There were tickertape parades, Life magazine photo spreads and people recognizing the Shepards everywhere they went. She says NASA astronauts and their families share a special bond and keep in touch, like a huge extended family. Laura’s move to Evergreen Laura wound up in Evergreen thanks to astronaut Wally Schirra — “I was their second daughter” — who told her she should live here. Laura moved in 1978 and opened a shoe store in downtown Evergreen called the “The Glass Slipper” that she operated for eight years. However, she had been in Colorado many times before locating to Evergreen. The Shepards took two-week

Furthering space flight Laura said it didn’t dawn on her as a young woman to strive to become an astronaut because women weren’t allowed in the NASA astronaut program. However, she became involved with the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation, which was started in 1984 by the original Mercury 7 astronauts. As chair of the board of trustees, Laura is proud of the 60 scholarships given yearly to support scholars in STEM — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — while commemorating the legacy of America’s pioneering astronauts. “If I could influence young girls to go into space,” she said, “that is what I want to do.” Laura enjoys making presentations about space flight to students, donning her father’s flight suit — even though he never wore it into space — and showing artifacts from his time at NASA. Now, she’s thinking about wearing her own flight suit because it — and she — have been in space.

Several annual events, such as Clear Creek High School’s prom, the Georgetown Christmas Market and the Mount Evans Scenic Highway’s opening day returned in 2021 after being canceled in 2020. Clear Creek residents and officials embraced the need to remain flexible, though. For instance, CCHS’ volleyball and football programs opted to compete in spring 2021 rather than fall 2020, and Idaho Springs’ Miner Street Market returned for summertime fun. By fall — as the school year started, more activities moved indoors, and COVID-19 variants took center stage — Colorado experienced increasing case numbers and hospitalizations. Thus, in December, Clear Creek and other Denver-area counties reinstituted mask mandates. Controversies at Idaho Springs Police Department The Idaho Springs Police Department was in the national spotlight in 2021 for two incidents of suspected police misconduct. On May 30, then-ISPD officer Nicholas Hanning deployed his stun-gun against unarmed Michael Clark, 75. Clark has since suffered serious health complications, according to his family members. In June, after an investigation by the District Attorney’s Office, Hanning was charged with third-degree assault of an at-risk individual. He was later terminated by ISPD.

Officer Ellie Summers, who responded to the May 30 incident with Hanning, later resigned and took a job with another Colorado law enforcement agency. In September, ISPD was named in a lawsuit by Brady Mistic, who claimed Hanning and Summers used unnecessary force when they arrested him in 2019. In October, Clark’s family members, Mistic and other community members held a rally in Citizens Park to protest these incidents, to call for an independent investigation into ISPD and to demand justice for its victims. On Dec. 9, Hanning pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge for

the May 30 incident. He is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 27. Voters pass school district’s $3 million bond Carlson Elementary School students will get a new school in a few years thanks to a $33 million bond approved by voters in November. Most of the money will pay for renovating Building 103, which is the old middle school building on Highway 103, into a state-of-the-art elementary school. The remainder will be used for renovations to the other school buildings plus pay for lighting at the new Golddigger Stadium at Clear Creek High School. Property taxpayers will pay an

Countywide sales tax passes, new Springs mayor elected on Nov. 2 ballot Also on the Nov. 2 ballot, Clear Creek voters approved a 1% sales tax toward funding the county’s Road & Bridge department, which was expecting major revenue shortfalls over the next 20 years. After months of discussion, Clear Creek officials decided a sales tax would be the best solution, as it would ensure visitors paid for their impacts on county roads. Additionally, Idaho Springs voters elected Councilman Chuck Harmon as mayor over opponent Mike Kowalewski. Mike Hillman, who has been Idaho Springs’ mayor for eight years, is term limited. City voters also narrowly voted down a 1% sales tax measure that would’ve helped fund the city’s water and wastewater system. Council members anticipate including the question on the Nov. 2022 ballot, as massive fee increases are expected for water and wastewater users this spring. Idaho Springs’ football field rezoned for development After years of discussion and multiple versions of the plan, a mixedused development on the former Digger Field is taking shape. Council approved rezoning the field and bus barn. This allows a developer to build up to 120 residential units across three buildings, as well as a commercial space and a publicly accessible park. With the rezoning approved, applicant Four Points Development will next submit a final development plan and final plat for City Council approval. If and when the plans are approved, the school district anticipates closing on the properties in February and Four Points hopes to start construction this summer. The project is already fully funded, so developers don’t expect any delays oonce everything’s approved. Local peak renamed Mestaa’ehehe Mountain On Dec. 9, the U.S. Board on Geographic Names approved the petition to rename a Clear Creek County peak Mestaa’ehehe Mountain. The new name honors Owl Woman, a Cheyenne mediator and translator who died in 1847. The mountain, which is along Highway 103 near Echo Mountain ski resort, was formally called Squaw Mountain, a name government bodies have recognized as derogatory. After the Northern Cheyenne Tribe and the U.S. Forest Service filed a joint federal petition in Oct. 2020, Clear Creek officials and residents, tribal representatives, and people of indigenous descent

started to discuss the merits of the Mestaa’ehehe Mountain petition. During a June 1 county commissioners meeting, many said it was unacceptable for such a beautiful area to have such an offensive name, and supported renaming it for Owl Woman. Clear Creek County ultimately told state officials it supported the Mestaa’ehehe Mountain petition. In mid-September, the Colorado Geographic Naming Advisory Board also recommended renaming the peak. It conveyed its decision to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, which had final say on the matter. The renaming work will continue in 2022, though, as U.S. Forest Service and Clear Creek County officials work to redesignate items around the mountain, such as the fire tower and roads, that share its former name. Westbound express lane, ealth clinic completed In 2021, two multi-year construction projects concluded in the Idaho Springs area. The Colorado Department of Transportation opened its westbound mountain express lane for testing in the summer, and Clear Creek County and its partners finished the Health & Wellness Center along Miner Street. CDOT and its collaborators broke ground on the westbound lane in July 2019, and it was supposed to be complete by Feb. 2021. and other factors. The parking lots in downtown Idaho Springs were repaved in the spring as heavy civil work started winding down, and crews tackled small items throughout the summer and fall. The lane is scheduled to start tolling soon. Meanwhile, construction work on the Clear Creek Health & Wellness Center —previously referred to as the clinic in Idaho Springs — started in fall 2020 after years of planning and fundraising. Health care workers and county staff members moved into the building in mid-August, and local and state officials hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony in October. Clear Creek school district approves four-day school week The Clear Creek School District is moving forward with a four-day school week beginning in August 2022 to give teachers a planning day to create the deep-learning experiences for students. The school board will get a report in January on how planning for the new configuration is going, including plans for fifth-day options for students, which was a sticking point for parents. The district anticipates lengthening the school day and adding two weeks to the school year to accommodate the four-day week. Clear Creek joins the other 111 out of 178 Colorado school districts that use a four-day school week.

Clear Creek Golddigger wins Olympic gold 2021 was a historic year for the U.S. women’s volleyball program and third-generation Clear Creek resident Haleigh Washington. Washington, who grew up in Idaho Springs and attended Clear Creek Middle School/High School, and her teammates won gold in the summer’s Tokyo Olympics. The United States beat Brazil in the Aug. 8 finals, marking the program’s first-ever gold medal. Washington’s former coaches and teammates, friends and supporters followed the team’s progress and hosted watch parties in Idaho Springs.

removed by hand. So, hundreds of CCHS students, staff members, parents, and community members spent three-and-a-half days shoveling snow before the inaugural March 20 game. Even Manual High School students and staff helped clear the sidelines shortly before kickoff. Throughout 2021, the stadium hosted other events, including the Class of 2021’s graduation, the Sept. 14 Golddigger Invitational, and the local elementary schools’ Oct. 22 Pumpkin Run. On Oct. 29, the Golddiggers finally secured the stadium’s inaugural win on Senior Night and sent their seven senior players out in style.

A deadly shooting rampage in Denver and Lakewood claimed the lives of five victims and ultimately ended with the suspect’s death. Lyndon James McLeod, 47, identified by the Lakewood Police Department at a press conference held the day after the shootings, opened fire in tattoo shops, homes

and a hotel lobby during a killing spree on the evening of Dec. 27. Denver Police Chief Paul Pazen said that it appears that McLeod was targeting specific people and businesses. The incident is believed to have started around 5:25 p.m. Dec. 27 when three individuals were shot near 1st Avenue and Broadway in Denver. Two women were killed in that shooting, including Alicia Cardenas, owner of Denver tattoo shop Sol Tribe. The other victim, a man, was injured and taken to the hospital for treatment. He remains in critical condition, according to Clark. Around 5:31 p.m. near 6th Avenue

At a press conference held the day after the shootings, the Lakewood Police Department identified the suspected shooter as Lyndon James McLeod, 47. The fatal victims have been identified as: Danny Scofield, 38; Sarah Steck, 28; Alicia Cardenas, 44; Alyssa Gunn-Maldonado, 35; Michael Swinyard, 67. and Cherokee Street, the shooter attempted to gain access to a residence and fired at the occupants. No one was injured. In a nearby alley, a van was set on fire. “It appears the suspect was responsible for starting that fire,” Clark said. “We’re working to determine the source of the fire.” Around 5:45 p.m., the Denver Police department reported gunshots at the 1200 block of Williams Street. A man was killed. At that point, investegators got information on McLeod’s vehicle and located it around 5:49 p.m. Denver officers exchanged gunfire with McLeod as they were in pursuit of his vehicle near 8th Avenue and Zuni Street. The shots disabled the police car, allowing McLeod to flee to Lakewood. Lakewood Police Spokesman John Romero said that just before 6 p.m., his department received a

report of shots fired at Lucky 13 Tattoo in Lakewood. The victim, Danny Scofield, was pronounced dead at the scene. Lakewood police were able to locate the vehicle near Belmar shopping center and the driver opened fire. Police returned fire, but the suspect fled the scene on foot. Around 6:10 p.m., McLeod retreated to the Hyatt Place Hotel, where he shot a desk clerk, Sarah Steck. Steck later died in the hospital. McLeod fled the scene again before being confronted by Lakewood police agents, who ordered him to drop his weapon. McLeod

shot and injured Lakewood Police Agent Ashley Ferris, who recovered enough to return fire, killing McLeod. “I can’t emphasize enough the heroic actions of our Lakewood Police agent,” Romero said. “In the face of being shot, in the face of danger, she was able to save others from this terrible tragedy.” Pazen said that McLeod was on the radar of law enforcement due to investigations in 2020 and early 2021 that did not result in criminal charges. Those details are not being released at this time. This is a developing story, as the investigation is ongoing.

A property that was once proposed to become a quarry is now forever preserved as wildlife habitat only. Local organizations announced on Dec. 27 that the Douglas Mountain Ranch and Preserve is now the Pals Family State Wildlife Area. Colorado Parks & Wildlife bought the 123-acre property southeast of Empire for $3.5 million in December. CPW contributed most of the funds, along with $500,000 from Great Outdoors Colorado, $200,000 from Clear Creek County’s Open Space Acquisition Fund, and $20,000 from the Friends of Clear Creek group. CPW will own and manage the property, along with the adjacent Georgetown State Wildlife Area. The Pals Family State Wildlife Area will have hunting and fishing access, but trails and conventional public access is not expected. The property has long been a critical corridor for the local bighorn sheep herd, and the new wildlife area will ensure the sheep’s health and protect Empire’s viewsheds. The Pals family members, who have lived in the county for several generations, stated in a Dec. 27 press release how grateful they were to those who made the sale possible. “The sale of our property to CPW has been quite a journey with many ups and downs,” the Pals family continued. “We are proud to know that we are honoring our grandparents’ love for Clear Creek County.”

After developers proposed turning the property into a quarry or gravel pit in 2018, the Friends of Clear Creek, MALT and others worked to preserve the land rather than see it turned into a commercial operation. “Protecting the Pals Family State Wildlife Area is a huge win for residents of Clear Creek County, visitors to the area and the local wildlife,” said MALT Executive Director Jeanne Beaudry. While the sheep are the most notable inhabitants, Friends of Clear Creek President Margi Kaspari emphasized that new wildlife area will help the deer, moose, elk, mountain lions, bears, and other animals that frequent Georgetown and Empire. The next big step in protecting local wildlife is the forthcoming wildlife overpass across U.S. Highway 40, Kaspari said. Work is scheduled to start on it this summer. She recalled the April 2018 meeting in Empire where developers announced the gravel pit project. That’s how the Friends of Clear Creek group was founded, as the members banded together to stop the development and preserve the land, she described. Kaspari credited MALT and the Clear Creek County Open Space Commission with connecting with CPW and finding the bigger funds to make the purchase happen. She also noted how the Friends’ $20,000 was donated by more than 40 county residents and supporters. “It showed the passion and commitment of residents in the county

Tuesday, Dec. 14 — The Sheriff’s Office received a report of a theft in the 1300 block of County Road 314. Items had been stolen from a vehicle. Tuesday, Dec. 14 — The Sheriff’s Office received reports of criminal mischief along Snyder Mountain Road. Someone had turned on a water hose. Thursday, Dec. 16 — Georgetown police responded to two unrelated disturbances in the 1900 block of Argentine Street. The incidents were within a 24-hour period on Dec. 15 and

Dec. 16, and each resulted in an arrest for suspected domestic violence. Friday, Dec. 17 — For two consecutive nights, Georgetown police responded to noise complaints at a motel along Argentine Street. Both occasions apparently stemmed from a guest screaming in his sleep. After the second occurrence, the guest left the motel. Friday, Dec. 17 — Empire police responded to a construction fraud incident along East Park Avenue. A business owner contracted a construction company to install restaurant equipment and assist with an interior buildout. The company was paid on the start date, and the worker left shortly thereafter and didn’t return.

Monday, Dec. 20 — Georgetown police and other emergency workers responded to a possible swift-water rescue at Georgetown Lake. A witness driving on Interstate 70 reported seeing someone in the water with another individual on the ice trying to help. First responders interviewed those at the lake, but no one reported seeing anyone in distress.

Thursday, Dec. 23 — Georgetown police responded to a residence in the 700 block of Brownell Street for reports of an intoxicated person who was unwelcome at the residence. The intoxicated person was ultimately transported to the hospital via ambulance.

Friday, Dec. 17 — After receiving reports of suspicious activity, Empire police contacted multiple people reportedly smoking marijuana inside a vehicle along West Park Avenue. The travelers said they were excited to be in a state where marijuana was legal, but weren’t aware of all the laws.
