The new name honors Owl Woman, a Cheyenne translator and mediator who was inducted into the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame in 1985. The mountain’s previous name was acknowledged as derogatory by locals and government bodies alike, and on Dec. 9, a federal naming board approved the name Mestaa’ehehe Mountain. The Clear Creek School District has some work to do regarding student instruction. Superintendent Karen Quanbeck told the school board recently that the district needed to focus on deeper learning to better engage students and to meet or exceed the Colorado Academic Standards. Teaching concepts the first time needs to do the job, so students need fewer interventions, she said. She pointed to standardized testing data, which she reminded the board is only one way of measuring student learning, that shows student achievement is not where should be in English/language arts and math. She said statewide and in Clear Creek, CMAS test scores declined since the pandemic started. Students who learned remotely during the pandemic declined the most in their test scores, she added. The school board will have a more in-depth discussion on student instruction at its next board study session at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 13. September 30, 1954 - December 6, 2021

Geoffrey Glenn Motika, 67, of Empire, Colorado passed away on Dec. 6 at his home due to liver failure and prostate cancer with his wife Roxanne caring for him.

the district website, ccsdre1.org. Quanbeck said it’s also apparent that students are experiencing more mental-health issues in large part thanks to the uncertainty of the pandemic, and school personnel must help students with those issues

before learning can take place. “All of our kids, especially at the secondary level, were significantly impacted with anxiety and stress around unpredictability,” Quanbeck said. “We continue to be surprised by the level of mental health needs.” Quanbeck said the standardized test data for the district has been interesting to study. “The point I want to make,” Quanbeck told the school board, “that has

intrigued me as a superintendent is we have been hot and cold as a district in terms of test scores. Some years have been great, while some years not great. What that told me is there are deeper things going on.” She attributed some of the changes to high teacher turnover and changes in district leadership. Teachers, she explained, say the district hasn’t had curriculum that builds upon learning at each grade

level. “We haven’t engaged kids at the deepest level,” she said. “We have done well with kids going to college but less well with others. We are not consistently growing kids the way we need to grow them when you look at CMAS, SAT and PSAT scores.”

Having worked on film projects before, Gary Wyman decided after being diagnosed with ALS that he wanted his final road trip to be documented, and his friend Gabe Rovick made it happen. On Dec. 21, F4D Studio in Golden released the film “From the Passenger Seat” that documents Wyman’s final road trip with friends during his journey with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Wyman, a 1998 Clear Creek High School graduate, died on Dec. 21, 2018, at age 38. ALS is a debilitating disease of the nervous system that quickly robs a person of the ability to use one’s limbs, the ability to speak and ultimately the ability to swallow — all while the mind remains lucid. There is no cure. Rovick and Wyman became friends while working at Icelantic Skis together. Rovick said Wyman declined rapidly after the diagnosis. Then, he started talking about the road trip. “He kept talking about going on a road trip in his van and documenting it, and that’s where I came in,” Rovick said. Around 20 people joined the pair on different legs of the 5,000-mile trip that had emotionally taxing moments.

“The road trip was definitely an emotional rollercoaster at all times. You never really knew what to expect,” Rovick said. “Also knowing what the final outcome was all the time made it hard.” Eric Heiland, a friend of Wyman family, joined him on the first part of the road trip. He also edited the film, which was the first full-length film Heiland has put together. He said he had a special attachment to the project. “There were definitely moments I was crying in the editing booth,” he said. Heiland said he feels a sense of closure with the completion of the film and its release. “I think Gary would be very proud and happy with how the film turned out,” he said. Ashley Hart, an Evergreen resident, also became friends with Wyman through work at Icelantic Skis. Hart joined the road trip on the last leg of the journey. When thinking about his favorite memories of the trip, Hart had multiple come to mind. “Gary’s smile and the wonder in his eyes while we were whitewater rafting,” he said.

He also remembered being on a speedboat during a storm in Flaming Gorge, and Wyman’s laughter and smile being incredible. After the trip was over, Hart and other friends who joined along the way were involved in making the film. They did interviews and provided voiceovers. Rovick, Heiland and Hart all took away a common message from their trip and relationship with Gary: Live life to the fullest.

More than that, the three hope the film results in more awareness for ALS. “It’s not talked about as much as say cancer research and diseases in that way,” Rovick said. Hart reflected on the seriousness of the disease and how the film can spread awareness. “I think it’s something that brings a lot of clarity to what’s important,” he said.

Group asks for space for a child care center Clear Creak school board wrestles with whether it can make a commitment before designing a new elementary school BY DEB HURLEY BROBST DBROBST@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

The Clear Creek school board faces a conundrum now that a group has asked the board to commit to renting space for a year-round infant/toddler care center in the building that will be the new home for Carlson Elementary. Representatives from the Early Care Team have asked for a commitment soon because grants may be available in 2022 to help create the child care center. The team is asking for a low-cost lease for about 4,600 square feet of space to house 62 children from infants through prekindergarten with shared access to the playground and situated so there is a pickup and dropoff location for parents. They said other options were too expensive, too small or with lease options that were too short. While board members agreed that Clear Creek County was a child care desert and child care was a priority, they were leery about making a commitment before they have a better idea of what the new Carlson Elementary School will look like when it goes into the former middle school known as Building 103. “The challenge that we face with this question is it’s early in the process,” Superintendent Karen Quanbeck said. “It feels weird because it’s backward.” Board members wanted to know the type of commitment the Early Care Team needs to go after grants, saying while they believe a child care center is a good use for the space, they don’t know whether it’s feasible. The board plans to meet in an

executive session soon to discuss the idea further. The Early Care Team consists of representatives from Clear Creek County, the Clear Creek Metropolitan Recreation District, Red Rocks Community College’s Child Care Innovations program and the school district. Becky Dancer, CCSD’s director of teaching and learning who serves on the team, said the goal was to open an infant/toddler program as early as fall 2023. The Early Care Team and school board members understand that child care options are necessary to keep employees in the district, in Idaho Springs and the county. “If we build it, people will be interested in coming,” Dancer said. “The core programming (in Building 103) has to be around the elementary school,” Quanbeck added. “We have not yet figured out where those pieces will be with an architect. We have ideas, but we really need architects to help with that before we know what kind of room is available for a child care center. Conceptually, it’s sort of easy to say that we super love the idea, but when we get nitty gritty, what does that mean?” Board members said while the community has communicated the need for child care loud and clear, they didn’t want to make a decision on a child care center until they had more input from the community, something they promised as the district went for the bond to pay for the new Carlson Elementary School. “I don’t feel like we are being genuine to the community if we are already carving off a section (of the building) for a use,” board member Erica Haag said. “I feel like we’re saying we want to do public engagement, but as far as this piece, we’re jumping ahead of public engagement.” Quanbeck promised to consult with district experts before the school board continues its discussion. “There’s a way to find a solution, but we’re not there yet,” she said.

Clear Creek senior Kamron Brewer didn’t do anything last winter, saying he got “fat and lazy.” This winter’s been a completely different story, though, as Brewer placed first at the Dec. 11 Wheat Ridge wrestling tournament. “I need wrestling,” he said. “I would be bored without it.” Clear Creek wrestling has returned this winter, after the program was unable to have a 2020-21 season. Thus, the Wheat Ridge tournament was the Golddiggers’ first competition since the Feb. 2020 state championships. Along with Brewer taking first in the 145-pound weight class, fellow seniors Michael Hillman and Nick Baker also placed. Hillman placed second in 160, while Baker placed fourth in 120. Clear Creek has 17 wrestlers this year, but only four are upperclassmen. Coach Danion Baca thought Clear Creek’s juniors and seniors did well at the Wheat Ridge tournament, considering they haven’t wrestled in nearly two years. “Most of them didn’t do any other sports last year,” Baca said. “They were pretty upset, because

they didn’t get to have a wrestling season.” Junior Evan Brandt, who wrestles in the 145-pound weight class, said he was excited to jump right into the season and set an example for the younger wrestlers. Brandt said he loves that wrestling isn’t a team sport in the traditional sense, commenting, “If I lose, it’s on me.” Brewer also enjoys the sport’s individual focus, saying he likes how a match usually comes down to which wrestler wants it more. “It’s good to be back,” Brewer said of wrestling. “I missed it for sure.” Proving ground Most of Clear Creek’s freshmen and sophomores have never wrestled before. So, with only a month of practice under the proverbial belts, the Wheat Ridge tournament was a good learning experience, Baca described. “They were definitely really nervous,” he said, “but I think after a couple got their first wins, they settled down a little bit.” Ultimately, sophomores Isaiah Jenkins and Silas Gilda placed first and second, respectively, in the 285-pound weight class. How these younger wrestlers will do this season is ultimately up to them, Baca explained. Maybe they’ll pick things up quickly; maybe they won’t. “Someday, it just clicks and everything starts working for them,” he continued, adding that some Golddiggers have experienced that

already. Sophomore A.J. Frei, who’s competing in the 138-pound weight class, is a first-time wrestler. About 20 minutes after his inaugural match, Frei described how it was initially very close, but he grew tired and ultimately lost. “It was harder than I thought it was going to be,” he said. Frei said he wasn’t planning to wrestle until this year, and he appreciated how it was motivating him to stay in shape and eat healthy. “I like the family that we have,

how we’re able to connect,” he said of the wrestling program. Brandt, who has been wrestling since third-grade, commented that he’s looking forward to sharing his experience and advice with Clear Creek’s younger wrestlers. Based on what he’s seen in practice and in the first few matches of the Dec. 11 tournament, Brandt said he believes they have a lot of potential. “I want to show them what it really takes,” he continued, “and what you get out of it when you try.”
