The Clear Creek School District’s bus barn will be moved to the track south of Building 103 despite county and Idaho Springs officials hoping it could be used for affordable housing.

The school board on Dec. 14 unanimously decided to move the bus barn, known as the Transportation and Maintenance Facility, to that location. Board members said they hoped another district property might be conducive for housing, so they could partner with Idaho Springs and the county.

District staff recommended that the facility be moved to Building 103, which is the former middle school, over the other option, which was a property near Clear Creek High School that the district would need to purchase.

The district is poised to complete the sale with Four Points Funding in mid-February for the former football field and bus barn property in Idaho Springs. The district has a lease-back clause in the contract for 21 months for the bus barn. Realisti-

about buying and selling, counting money and understanding owning a business.

Students kept some of the profits to defray the cost of making the goods, and they took the net proceeds — about $500 — to the Evergreen Walmart to buy gifts for infants, children and teenagers.

The entire project was a win for the first graders, a win for students and staff who bought items at the food trucks and a win for the families whose children will receive gifts for Christmas.

Teacher Kristen Betts decided to try something different to get the youngsters to understand economics concepts, and the food-truck project was born. The students

decorated the food trucks made out of boxes, decided what they wanted to sell, and then sold cookies, soups, candies and more to everyone in the school. Everything cost $1, and students do the math to provide change.

First grader Lydia Didier with the help of her dad, Chris, sold a chicken soup that Lydia called really yummy. Chris said he liked the hands-on way the first graders were learning about money, and buying and selling items. He also hoped there was some soup left after the food-truck sales were over.

First grader Victoria Van Volkinburg made “The Best Sugar Cookies” with her mom, and she was thrilled with the number of customers who came to her food truck.

Beck’s Best Bakery, operated by first grader Beck Dunbar, sold a sweet treat made of Rollo candy, pretzels and M&Ms. Beck said he made them to sell because they’re

one of his favorites. He explained that the $1 price was good because you wouldn’t want to charge $93 since no one would buy the items the food trucks were selling.

Jordan Dunbar, Beck’s mom, said Beck talked about the project for weeks, so excited about what he was learning and doing. She was amazed that students as young as first graders understood the concepts of buying and selling, profit and loss.

Nora Brough said she sold out of her mini pies really fast, while Cam Marinas said his soup, which was something most students had not tried before, was a bit more difficult to sell.

Lily Bourassa said she got a lot of practice counting money, and Corwin Lauritsen said the dollar bills filled up his entire basket.

They agreed that it made them feel good to help other children.

Andrew Wolff, the district’s student futures navigator, called the food truck unit a great way to get kids up and moving, building something and being involved in learning. Plus parents got involved by helping the students make food to sell.

“As educators, we are truly challenged to tap a part of (students’) minds and creativity,” Wolff said.

“We aspire to do that in our classrooms.”

Whether it’s for last-minute holiday gifts, something sweet for Christmas dinner, or something exciting to open for New Year’s, there’s something for everyone at Slaymaker Cellar’s new tasting room on Miner Street.

Co-owners Chris and Kent Slaymaker started making mead, a honey-based wine, in Idaho Springs last year. In July, they and staff members Jenn Pedersen and Jessica Guy opened the tasting room at 1535 Miner St., where they offer samples, bottles of mead, and other honeybased products.

The Slaymakers and Pedersen explained how there is a mead for everyone. There’s a variety of flavors and a spectrum of sweetness. Some can taste more like beers, while others taste more like wine. They even offer sparkling mead.

“Anything we can do with grape wine, we can do with honey wine,” Kent said.

Slaymaker Cellars uses Colorado honey in its meads, and different honeys serve as the base for different meads. For instance, wildflower mead comes from wildflower honey, they said.

Community helping hospitalized “Santa” this Christmas With “Santa” Bill Lee hospitalized with COVID-19, his friends and neighbors have been sharing the Christmas spirit in his stead.

Lee, who lives near Idaho Springs,

has served as “Santa Claus” for decades. He keeps reindeer, burros, and other animals at Laughing Valley Ranch. He also participates in and helps organize the Western Pack Burro Ass-ociation races.

As of Dec. 15, Lee has been hospitalized for a month with COVID-19, moving in and out of the intensive care unit.

As for the new tasting room, the Slaymakers and Pedersen said it’s been a great way to educate people about what mead is, build brand awareness, and visit with tourists.

Having the Miner Street Market when the tasting room first opened helped bring in more foot traffic, because most people would never notice the storefront just driving by, they commented.

Along with the tasting room, mead fans should also be on the lookout for Slaymaker products at local restaurants and retailers.

Cidery receives license to start production The Idaho Springs City Council has approved Clear Creek Cidery & Eatery’s application for a vintner’s license, which will enable it to begin making its own cider.

cally, the new facility needs to be ready in time for the start of the school year in August 2023.

The new facility is expected to cost $2.3 million, which will be funded from the proceeds of the property sale. The district has not budgeted any additional funds, and district staff is concerned that if the facility is put on Floyd Hill, it will go over budget.

While having the Transportation and Maintenance Facility near the high school could eventually provide some great learning opportunities for students, the cons far outweigh the pros, the board decided.

Among the biggest issues on Floyd Hill is that it would be nearly impossible to get water for sinks, toilets and bus-washing stations to the site. In addition, the facility would require the district to upgrade its wastewater treatment plant, and neighbors weren’t excited about having the building at that location.

The track is a better location because the district already owns the property, it’s flat, water is accessible, and the community has no issues with the building being constructed

there, district officials said.

“Water is an unknown issue (at Floyd Hill) and that could really throw us for a loop,” board President Sandi Schuessler said. “We have flat land and big space at the track. Why put money into land when we own land? (The track) is the best spot when looking at the risk analysis.”

Board member Jessica North added: “I see so many benefits of a Floyd Hill location, but there are too many issues.”

Idaho Springs and Clear Creek County have seen the track property as a perfect place for higher-density housing.

According to a letter from Idaho Springs Mayor Mike Hillman to the school board: “In 2017, the property was identified in the city’s Comprehensive Plan as one of the best possible locations for density development to support workforce housing.

The city would like to encourage and coordinate with the school district to develop the property for that purpose.”

The letter says the city understands that the school district needs to find a new location for the bus barn, and hopes the school district and the city could work together to balance both needs.

or many, this time of year is cause for celebration. For others, though, this time of year is spent in reflection and reminiscing about times past.

For some it may be remembering those lost and for others nothing at all. What does it mean for you?

During these holiday months with all the glittering lights, festive decorations, and classic Christmas tunes, it can be easy to feign happiness and content. As we get older, however, this ease into the holiday spirit is not as easy as it was before.

Mobility may be decreased. Eyesight is getting worse. Children have grown up and moved away. The dark lights of depression and loneliness can cast shade over the brightness of this time of year.

Depression can be all encompassing and feel like there is a hundred pounds around our neck. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, in 2018 alone there were over 6.5 million people over the age of sixty-five with depression. Some signs of depression include fatigue, weight loss, lack of attention to personal care. and withdrawing from those around us. The effects of aging make it more difficult to deal with depression, sadness and grief.

This past year, we have had many losses, but those of us who are still here can honor those we have lost by raising ourselves out of the darkness. We may move a little slower, but there are still things we can do

‘Tis the Season for…. to push aside this creeping depression and gently step into the holiday spirit.

Although it may seem like we are alone, please know that you are not.

Every person has a different approach to the holidays, whether that be visChristy Recke iting with family or cozying up at home with a delightful book. What we need to strive for is recognizing how we are feeling and doing something about it. We are all hesitant to just jump right into a large group event with Covid still lurking around, but there are many other things that you can do to pull yourself up. Here are a few tips: Get active! Mother Nature has thrown us a curve ball this December, and it has been unseasonably warm. Go for a walk in the sun, meet up with a friend or family member for coffee and a walk, or just sit on the porch with your furry friend.

Talk it out and accept the way you are feeling. You are not wrong if you are feeling down. Acknowledge that it is ok to be sad. Talk with a friend or reach out to a counselor or local senior center to talk with like-minded people who can understand what you are going through and help you through it.

Be a good listener. Reach out to

others you know who may be feeling down this holiday season. Optimistic vibes and happy energy are contagious. Being there for someone else can be just the thing to turn your thoughts to happy ones. Reminiscing and sharing stories from your youth can be an effective way to beat the blues by honoring happy times and those that have passed.

Make some cookies! Studies have shown that vanilla, mint, cinnamon, and pine can have a positive effect on mental and emotional well-being.

Bake some chocolate chip cookies, eat a candy cane or use a diffuser to spread these smells around your home for an uplifting aroma. Hand a few bags of cookies out to friends and neighbors.

Get involved! Join a hobby group, play some BINGO at the senior center, volunteer, attend a church social or view an online presentation.

Stepping out of your comfort zone can be a clever way to energize your mind and lift your spirits.

Keep it simple. The pandemic and subsequent COVID lingering issues have been hard for everyone.

Do not discount the fact that others may feel the same as you and do not worry about having a lavish holiday celebration or meeting the usual holiday obligations. Can’t physically put up a big tree? Just hang up your favorite ornament. Cannot make your usual cookies from scratch?

Buy some prepared batter and add some sprinkles.

The holidays are about being thankful and being together. Reach out if you need it, be together if you want it, and know that no matter who you are, you are important, and you are not alone.

City approves downtown master plan The City Council has unanimously approved a downtown master plan, drafted by Studio Seed with input from Idaho Springs residents and business owners.

The plan’s goal is to get visitors to businesses as quickly and efficiently as possible, and includes ideas on how to improve downtown parking, transit and wayfinding.

Cheney Bostic, a consultant from Studio Seed, said at a Dec. 13 City Council meeting that the plan outlines ideas for a circulator transit system, better signage for those with RVs and trailers, and how to better activate the Idahoe Mall, among other items.

“We have had a lot of studies looking at different aspects of downtown,” Councilman Bob Bowland said. “It’s really nice to see a plan that brings all of these

together, with an action plan moving forward both near- and longerterm.”

Bowland and Mayor Mike Hillman thanked Bostic and her team at Studio Seed for all their work, saying it’ll be a great foundation for the city to use.

Implementing the downtown master plan won’t require any new taxes, Bostic has previously stated, saying it would come from existing revenue streams.

She also previously emphasized that, while a parking structure is greatly needed, it won’t solve the problem alone. The city needs to make other improvements to its gateway area, signage and wayfinding.

2022 budget approved The City Council has unanimously approved the 2022 budget, which outlines water and sewer rate increases and raises for new Idaho Springs police officers, among other items.

The city’s 1% sales tax question on the Nov. 2 ballot, which would’ve helped offset water and wastewater rate increases, failed by two votes. Idaho Springs asked the County Clerk & Recorder’s Office to conduct a recount, but the results didn’t change, staff confirmed at a Dec. 13 City Council meeting.

Thus, officials anticipate adopting

a 6% rate increase for water and a 24% one for wastewater this spring.

Council members and staff clarified that the final decision rests with City Council, which will have to adopt rate increases by ordinance. If for some reason, council does not approve the ordinance, the 2022 budget will need to be amended, they confirmed.

Additionally, the city’s 2022 budget includes increasing ISPD officers’ starting salaries to $60,000 to help with hiring and retention, as recommended by Chief Nate Buseck. Current officers’ salaries were also adjusted for equity, staff confirmed.

Buseck thanked council for its support and said he’s optimistic the $60,000 base pay will help with hiring. He said someone graduating

from academy is interested in joining ISPD, and the city might be hiring her on Jan. 3. He said he’d have more details closer to that date.

City pours another $9,000 into horseshoe court At its Dec. 13 meeting, the City Council also approved spending another $8,987 for the forthcoming horseshoe court at Courtney-RyleyCooper Park.

The city already approved the project for $33,000 with a 10% contingency in late October.

However, City Administrator Andy Marsh explained that because the site wasn’t engineered, the slope was more than expected and curb walls on the lower side need to be higher than planned.

“So, they did not bid that

amount,” he said of the contractor.

“That was not in the (specifications).”

Marsh said the additional $9,000 will go toward higher curb walls and concrete pads, some of which will go under picnic tables. Having concrete under the tables will help secure them and improve maintenance, he commented.

The park had horseshoe pits before the Colorado Boulevard reconstruction a few years ago, and now the city is replacing them with a new court on the west side, across from the fire station.

These will be regulation-size for the National Horseshoe Pitching Association, and the city could host official events there.

Crime Calls from Dec. 6-12 Tuesday, Dec. 7 — Idaho Springs police responded to the 1900 block of Miner Street for reports of a protection order violation. When officers arrived, the reporting party said a woman was on the property who had a protection order requiring her to be 100 yards away from it. The woman was arrested on suspicion of violating the protection order.

Tuesday, Dec. 7 — Empire police

responded to a civil dispute along West Park Avenue. A couple was breaking up and moving out of a residence. A restraining order was issued in the case, and the police served it.

Wednesday, Dec. 8 — Idaho Springs police responded to the 1300 block of Miner Street to talk to a woman who requested to see an officer. While talking to the woman, officers learned she had a warrant for her arrest. She was taken into custody.

Saturday, Dec. 11 — An Idaho Springs officer initiated a traffic stop in the 2900 block of Colorado Boulevard. During the stop, the officer learned that the driver didn’t have a valid driver’s license or proof of insurance. The driver also had an active warrant for his arrest. He was taken into custody for the warrant, and cited for driving without a license or proof of insurance.

Saturday, Dec. 11 — Empire police investigated a fraud along East Park Avenue involving the sale of a

vehicle. The incident is still under investigation.

Sunday, Dec. 12 — Idaho Springs police responded to the 2900 block of Colorado Boulevard for reports of a woman sleeping on the property.

Officers contacted the woman, who reportedly became very aggressive and loud. She was cited for criminal trespass and disorderly conduct.
