Starting this week, a third of Idaho Springs Police Department’s sworn officer positions will be vacant. Thus, the city has given its remaining officers 4% pay raises to help with retention. ISPD Chief Nate Buseck said one officer has resigned effective Nov. 5, so the remaining five officers are switching to 12-hour shifts. This scheduling is very challenging, Buseck detailed, as it mandates overtime, could create morale problems, and doesn’t leave much time for training. “A lack of training leads to some bad things — litigation and things of that nature,” Buseck told City Council members during an Oct. 25 work session. Additionally, three other ISPD officers have applied elsewhere in the past two months, he stated. If the city loses two more officers, he said his department won’t be able to provide services 24/7. Miner Street was a mix of both. The event was a partnership by the Clear Creek Metropolitan Recreation District, the Yeti Saloon, and teens from the Mountain Youth Network to raise awareness for efforts to build a new skate park in Idaho Springs. Skateboarders from across the county turned out to show off their skills, hang out and use their platforms — both literal and figurative — to advance their cause.
