Triple Bypass bike ride rolls again

For a cyclist, few things in life are more enjoyable than an epic ride over great terrain.

But an epic ride over great terrain with ample support staff, feed stations and 4,999 riding buddies would probably qualify.

That was certainly the case according to Ken Reardon of Fort Collins, who said he’d done the Triple

Bypass before, “but not in a long time.”

“I ride competitively, but with organized races being weird the last two years ... I just wanted a nice, fun ride.”

Though, he admitted that he would still be checking his road times.

The Triple Bypass —a classic “bucket list” item for many cyclists and a bragging point for its veterans — is named for the three passes along the course, which winds from Buchanan Park in Evergreen over Juniper Pass (11,140 feet elevation), down through Idaho Springs and

This year’s race featured a “double bypass” option, starting in Georgetown and just going over Loveland and Vail passes. Most of the course is either on closed roads or on multiuse pathways. The event is capped at 5,000 participants. This year, it sold out two months ahead of time.

“We commonly sell out but not that quickly,” said race Operations Director Natalie Raborn.

District wins Succeeds Prize Career exploration lauded in award

The Clear Creek School District has won the prestigious Succeeds Prize for its work in career exploration and pathways.

The prize, which comes with a $15,000 award, is given by Colorado Succeeds to six school districts in different categories.

According to the Colorado Succeeds website, “The Succeeds Prize is a collaboration between Colorado Succeeds, 9NEWS and the business community that seeks to recognize, and invest in, educators that are reimagining education to prepare students for jobs that don’t yet exist, tools not yet created and problems not yet identified.”

Superintendent Karen Quanbeck said she thought of The Succeeds Prizes as the Grammys of education.

“I’m surprised and humbled that we won it,” she said. “A big reason we won is because of the powerful partnerships and the community that has been amazing since day one.”

In the last two years, the school district has instituted the Project

Bike Tech program at Clear Creek High School, which is a school district/community partnership in which students learn to tune and repair bicycles in a workshop at the school, taught by teachers and community members, so they are able to get internships and jobs.

Quanbeck attributes some of the success to the district’s partnership with the Homegrown Talent Initiative, “which at its core is all about breaking down silos between schools and your local community, whether that is businesses, government or nonprofit organizations.”

She called the learner profile, which lists the attributes the district wants students to have when they graduate, the district’s guiding light as officials design courses, create programs and more.

“I don’t think I realized how much of an anchor that learner profile would become,” Quanbeck said.

“Now we bring back everything to it even as we’re, for example, looking at the four-day school week and the fifth-day programs. It makes sense that the fifth day is connected to the learner profile.”

She said while she has no plans yet for the $15,000 award, she is thinking it could be used to fund student entrepreneurship.

“It would be fun to tap into those creative ideas that students have,” she said, “and see them through.”

It’s official School board votes to put bond ask on November ballot

Clear Creek voters will be asked on Nov. 2 to approve a $33 million bond that the school board wants to use to create an elementary school in the former middle school building in Idaho Springs and to improve the district’s other three school buildings.

The Clear Creek school board on Aug. 17 voted 4-0 to officially put the measure on the ballot. Board President Mitch Houston did not attend the meeting because he was out of town.

Before the vote, board member Kelly Flenniken noted that the school district has done a great job managing its money because it hasn’t asked for a bond measure in more than 20 years, and that bond paid for the Floyd Hill school building.

“We have done an exceptional job … which means it’s harder to ask,” Flenniken said. “We encourage people to ask questions and find out what their schools will get from this bond. It was very intentional that every facility would get something.

It’s never a great time to ask for additional funding … but if we don’t deal with it, the price tag always gets bigger.”

She suggested that Clear Creek’s declining enrollment is due in part to aging buildings, and improvements would aid in bringing more families to the schools.

“It’s our obligation to provide what kids deserve regardless of how many there are,” she said. “This is a thoughtful, realistic proposal.”

About $25 million would be used to renovate the former middle school or try a hybrid model that would demolish part of the old middle school and build a new section.

The remaining funds would be used in this manner: $1 million at King-Murphy Elementary School to expand the pre-kindergarten rooms, gymnasium floor renovation, security improvements, exterior repairs and more; $400,000 at the middle/ high school for athletic field lights, gymnasium floor improvements and security improvements; and $600,000 at Georgetown Community School to finish replacing the roof, install a commercial kitchen so the school could provide a hot lunch program, and exterior and interior improvements.

Voters would need to approve the November ballot measure to see savings on water, wastewater bills

A 1% sales tax increase in Idaho Springs would save a typical resident about $150 on water and wastewater bills in 2022 alone, according to city consultants, and savings through 2030 would also be substantial.

The Idaho Springs City Council has discussed the benefits and drawbacks of a new 1% sales tax for water and wastewater expenditures, particularly capital projects. Such a tax would bring in an additional $750,000 annually, city staff has confirmed.

The council was scheduled to discuss it at Monday’s meeting and likely vote on whether to include it on the November ballot. Mayor Mike Hillman also wanted to discuss whether the measure should sunset after a period, such as five to seven years.

However, during an Aug. 16 work session, council members pointed out the large number of local ballot measures asking voters for sales and property tax increases. If this and the county’s proposed 1% sales tax for road & bridge operations both pass, the city’s combined sales tax rate would climb to 10.65%.

“That’s a lot,” Councilman Jim Clark said. “We’re nearing 11%. It’s such a double-edged sword.”

Without a sales tax increase, though, water/wastewater rates will keep climbing — an equally unpalatable alternative, as Councilman Chuck Harmon described.

The breakdown Andrew Rheem of Raftelis, a financial consultant for municipalities, showed council members the

financial breakdown of four scenarios at the Aug. 16 work session.

The base case was with no sales tax increase; the other end of the spectrum was with a 1% sales tax increase; and the two in the middle were with 0.25% and 0.5% increases.

He emphasized that there would still be a need for water rate increases under any scenario, but they wouldn’t be quite so steep if offset by additional revenue.

Rheem looked at projected water and wastewater rate increases under all four scenarios through 2030.

All the numbers he showed were for a typical residential customer who used 10,000 gallons (bi-monthly) with a 5/8-inch meter.

On the water side, Rheem said that the base case would be a 5% or 6% increase annually. With a 1% sales tax, water rates would increase about 2% to 3% annually.

Rheem showed a current bimonthly water bill at $122. Under the base case, it’d rise to $191 by 2030; with the 1% sales tax, it would rise to $156 by 2030.

On the wastewater side, without any sales tax revenue to offset it, Rheem said users would see a 24% increase on their bimonthly wastewater bills between 2021 and 2022. Then, it would be a 6% to 7% increase annually until 2030.

With a 1% sales tax, though, users wouldn’t see an increase in wastewater rates until 2024, and then they’d see about a 2% annual increase through 2030.

Rheem showed a current bimonthly wastewater bill at $87. Under the base case, it’d jump to $108 in 2022 and continue increasing until it reached $180 in 2030. With the 1% sales tax, though, the rate increase would be more gradual, reaching $100 in 2030.

This means that, with a 1% sales tax, a typical residential customer would save $690 on their water and wastewater bills in 2030 alone.

“It certainly helps,” Rheem said of a sales tax increase. “We’re getting additional revenue in, and that’s allowing us to fund expenses and meet SEE SALES TAX, P7

some of the needs without increasing user charges quite as much.”

Mayor Mike Hillman pointed out that residents will still be paying part of those increases, but at their local businesses rather than on their utility bills. He said he would look into how much locals would have to spend at the registers to equal those water/wastewater savings.

Rheem clarified that rate increases, even if they’re partly offset by a sales tax, are necessary to fund operations, maintenance, upcoming capital projects, debt services and cash reserves.

The city still needs to pay off its wastewater treatment plant expansion and has several million-dollar water and wastewater projects planned through 2030, he explained.

Educating the public Hillman anticipated launching a campaign to help the public understand what the sales tax increase would go toward and why it was necessary.

He said, if it doesn’t pass on the November ballot, he didn’t want to receive angry calls from customers about their water/wastewater bills going up.

“We have no other way to do something like this except with sales tax,” he said of closing the gap between expenditures and revenues.

Hillman asked his colleagues for their thoughts on whether Idaho Springs should pursue a 1% sales tax or try for a 0.5% or 0.25% increase instead.

“I think the word should be out on

1%,” Harmon said. “It looks devastating if we only do half-measures.”

Hillman agreed, saying, “Doing something less than 1% doesn’t come close to what we’re trying to do. I really think it’s an easy sell to the community.”

Concept of the common good seems lost on some

T

he common good.

As societal members, we acquiesce to all kinds of things for the common good. We follow the laws and norms of our communities. We pay taxes to provide national defense, law enforcement, common infrastructure, environmental protection and education for our children. Without much controversy or discussion, the vast majority of people agree to accept societal norms for the common good.

And yet, as we face the most significant worldwide health crisis in our lifetimes, for many people the mantra continues that decisions they make about themselves have absolutely nothing to do with anyone else. We’ve seen it as vaccination rates for COVID-19 stalled before we reached herd immunity and set the stage for the Delta variant to take hold during a time when we should have been able to put this terrible pandemic behind us. The pandemic now has new life that has put many people at risk and has further delayed a return to normalcy.

And now the issue of use of masks

to protect people and slow the spread has come back in new and ugly ways.

Make no mistake, I hate wearing a mask. When we got to the point that mask restrictions were largely lifted, I loved the freedom and took great pleaColumnist sure in being able to smile at people when I encountered them.

But as the Delta variant has taken hold and there is new guidance, I’ve made a point to not go out without a mask in my pocket and to put it on as soon as I interact with anyone wearing one.

I’ve been particularly saddened by the reaction of some members of the public about whether kids should wear masks when they go back to school. As the vaccine has not yet been approved for kids under 12 and the variant puts so many people at risk, it’s eminently reasonable for us to take actions to protect our

kids and as a statement of solidarity for everyone in the school setting to wear masks.

To villainize health and school officials and otherwise argue that mask wearing is nothing more than a personal decision is a complete abdication of our responsibility to be part of the common good.

I wish enough people would be vaccinated to get us to herd immunity and allow us to lift mask restrictions again. But more than that, I wish those people who seem completely oblivious to the concept that their actions affect other people would open their eyes to the reality that we’re all in this crisis together.

As reasonable members of society, and without a thought, we take actions for the common good every day. It’s well past time for people to rank the common good of ending the pandemic as our highest societal value.

Achieving success starts with defining success The children laughed at one another as each took a turn playing the game. With each passing turn, the children laughed harder, cheering on their friends. The game they were playing was “pin the tail on the donkey.” As each attempt found its way somewhere other than the donkey, the farther away the tail landed, the greater the laughter.

A blindfold makes it hard to hit a target that cannot be seen, especially after being spun around a few times before walking dizzily toward our destination. Although this is a game, with the players being blindfolded, there is still an intended target. It’s one thing to try and hit a target we cannot see, but something else altogether to hit a target we don’t have.

— Lewis Carroll When pursuing personal growth or professional development goals, I have found that whatever it is that we are trying to achieve can be found in one of these four categories: increase, improve, expand, and/or reduce.

It is also helpful to make a distinction between increase and improve.

As an example, a business looking to define success and align key

performance goals may identify the need to increase revenue while at the same time improving their margins. Individuals I have worked out with may look to increase strength while improving stamina. And when Michael Norton we separate the two words, increase and improve, we are defining very clear goals and targets for each.

Some of us look to expand our capabilities in an area of our life or business. We may want to expand our knowledge or skill. Some of us may look to expand our thinking to gain a better understanding of the people in our lives and events happening around the world. We can look for opportunities to open more stores or locations, expanding our market share, or expand our offerings and customer base.

When it comes to defining success by reducing something, we look at things like reducing costs, reducing inches from our waistline, reducing timelines to complete a project faster, reduce the turnover of our employees, or reduce the risks asso-

ciated with our health, our business, or our finances.

One of the primary reasons people and companies never settle on true goals or the definition of success is that we get caught up in the gray areas of what success looks like.

We know that we want to get better in some way, but struggle with where to start. And how one person or business defines success can be vastly different from person to person and business to business.

While working on performance development, I started focusing on those four words in my questions to help bring clarity to the conversation and direction around productivity goals. I will ask you the same thing I ask others, “What is it in your life or business that you are hoping to increase, improve, expand, and/or reduce?”

One company that I worked with took this concept and created their sales plan that would lead them to having the best year ever. They used quantifiable metrics to measure themselves against: an increase in customer knowledge and intimacy, improved relationships that deepened trust, expanded their thinking to focus on bundled solutions rather SEE NORTON, P9

In the midst of planning a really fun Fall Rally in September, our committee has had to take a pause. The Clear Creek COVID rates are on the rise. We are also not making the progress we need to make with getting our community vaccinated. Our county officials have made the decision that county employees will return to wearing masks in county offices shared with others.

We looked at the data, we had an informative con-

versation where everyone was asked to share their thoughts and we made a decision not to hold an event that might pose a risk to our community. Our Fall Rally that was scheduled for Sept. 18 in Idaho Springs has been canceled.

Instead, we hope to do everything we can to protect everyone here in Clear Creek County from getting this horrible disease, including our children.

Emmi sentenced to 10 years in prison

The Evergreen attorney who pleaded guilty to six felonies including soliciting someone to kill her estranged husband’s girlfriend will spend 10 years in prison.

After three and a half hours of testimony during Jennifer Emmi’s sentencing hearing on Aug. 16, District Judge Randall Arp said he saw two sides of Emmi: the successful attorney and loving mother, and then the side of Emmi who committed the criminal acts that also included menacing, attempting to influence a judge and retaliation against a witness.

He said her behavior and her failure to be accountable and take responsibility for her actions indicated she would not be a good candidate for rehabilitation, and her actions could not be condoned in civilized society.

The prosecution asked for the sentence to include prison time, and the defense asked for probation.

Colin Bresee, Emmi’s attorney, said they were disappointed with the verdict, noting that her defense team believed she would have been an excellent candidate for probation.

“Speaking with Jennifer, she is deeply disappointed, and her biggest concern is access to her children that she still does not have,” Bresee said.

Emmi received several other sentences that will be served concurrently with the longest being 10 years, though she was given credit for the seven months she has already been in jail. She will serve three years of probation once she is released.

Arp said it would be up to the judge in her domestic relations case to decide whether she would be allowed to have contact with her three children.

The rest of the charges have been dismissed.

The prosecution argued that Emmi had repeatedly tried to find someone to kill her estranged husband’s girlfriend and had endangered her children. This newspaper is choosing not to provide specifics of some of the charges to protect the children.

Prosecutor Kate Knowles said Emmi has portrayed herself as a victim who did nothing wrong, and she did not show any signs of letting go of trying to get her children back or stopping her behavior. She said the family needed to heal by ensuring their safety with Emmi incarcerated.

Knowles said that Emmi invited media attention to the case, which caused additional harm to her children.

“That’s not putting her children first,” she said.

In two hours of testimony, the defense said Emmi was under more to the community, and reduce the stresses of life by not spreading myself so thin.”

scrutiny than other people accused of such crimes, that she had been a respected animal-rights attorney who created an area of law still being used today, and she was a devoted mother who hadn’t seen her children in nearly 18 months.

Defense attorney Bresee said she needed to be reintegrated with her children rather than being punished more by the court, and she was willing to continue counseling both alone and with her children. She has been working to resolve her mental health and alcohol abuse problems.

He noted that she had been ill and given large doses of steroids that can cause anger issues, and when she spoke with someone about killing her estranged husband’s girlfriend, she decided to think about it and then said no.

“Her life before 2018 shows she can lead a law-abiding life,” Emmi’s other defense attorney Malcolm Seawell said. “She recognizes that to be there for (her children) she has to take care of herself. Probation will allow her to move on. She clearly lost her way … and we are asking that you allow her to find her way back.”

Allegations in the affidavit The Jeffco Sheriff’s Office had been investigating Emmi since July 2020, and the affidavit states that she “conspired with and solicited multiple third parties to murder, harass, surveil, and retaliate against victims and witnesses in her criminal and civil cases.”

Jeffco investigators found evidence that Emmi “has also been conducting research on and targeting numerous persons involved in her cases as well as their uninvolved family members. … (She) has contacted numerous third parties, alleging that her estranged husband and his girlfriend have kidnapped, brainwashed and are abusing her children as a long-term plot to frame (her), of which (the investigator) found no evidence,” the affidavit said.

Emmi and her husband began having marital problems in January 2019, and when her husband threatened divorce, Jennifer began to complain of various illnesses, according to the arrest affidavit.

In January 2020, the affidavit says she put a knife to her husband’s throat at a family birthday party.

She also researched on the internet ways to evade law enforcement detection, according to the affidavit.

The arrest affidavit says Emmi asked a ranch hand about killing her estranged husband’s girlfriend.

The ranch hand informed the husband and the Jeffco Sheriff’s Office about the request and said when he warned Emmi that her husband might be killed too, she replied: “I’m inclined to kill two birds with one stone, so to speak,” according to the affidavit.

Investigators also learned that Emmi approached another man who had been a trained military sniper about killing people for her, according to the affidavit.

Haleigh attended Carlson Elementary and Clear Creek Middle and High School until 2012, when her mom Danielle accepted a job in Colorado Springs. Washington graduated from Doherty High School and went on to play volleyball at Penn State.

She and the U.S. women’s volleyball team took gold for the first time at the Tokyo Olympics by beating Brazil 3-0.

At the homecoming celebration, dad Alecs thanked the crowd for being there to support his daughter, and he said of Angie Thoennes, Haleigh’s first soccer coach, “I credit this wonderful woman for all of us being right here right now.”

Quarry proposed along Central City Parkway Idaho Springs expresses environmental concerns

A Golden-based company has applied to operate a quarry on a 470acre property along the Central City Parkway.

The property straddles the Clear Creek and Gilpin county line, and according to Idaho Springs city officials, the applicant Young Ranch Resource LLC wants the property to be annexed into Central City.

The application was filed with the Colorado Division of Mining, Reclamation and Safety in May, and a decision date is scheduled for Oct. 14.

Public comment closed on July 21, and 40 objections have been recorded against the application, including ones from SOLVE Clear Creek County, EMERGE and Douglas Mountain Resident’s Association.

“We do not need another quarry in Gilpin County. The Frei Quarry is more than capable of handling future development,” DMRA President Tom Ripley stated in his objection. “The traffic and congestion on U.S. 6 is already at a dangerous

level.”

Residents from Evergreen, Georgetown, Empire, Golden and Black Hawk also submitted objections to the project, expressing their concerns about its impacts on tourism, the viewshed, water supply and air quality.

“A new rock quarry would seriously degrade the air quality from dust and particulates and raise the noise level of the area,” Evergreen-based citizens group EMERGE wrote in its objection. “What will be the visual impact, especially from the highways and view corridors? Because Clear Creek County has significant tourist use, we wonder how would a new quarry with the accompanying dust, noise and degradation of the views impact tourists wanting to recreate in the area.”

One agency comment was recorded from History Colorado, the State Historic Preservation Office, which said that state records show no identified cultural resources in the area.

Crime Calls from Aug. 9-15 Monday, Aug. 9 — Empire police responded to a suspicious-activity report in the 400 block of South Main Street. Police contacted two individuals at the park and found they both had active arrest warrants.

Thursday, Aug. 12 — Idaho Springs officers were dispatched to an assault in progress along Soda Creek Road. Officers spoke with a woman who said she and her boyfriend had an altercation, and that he had pushed her and taken their dog and car keys. Officers located the boyfriend and took him into custody on suspicion of domestic violence.

New owners renovating Club Hotel building in Idaho Springs

As the song goes, everything old is new again because Idaho Springs’ Club Hotel is being revived.

The building at 1601 Colorado Blvd. used to be the Club Hotel — there’s even a placard along 16th Street explaining its history. However, about 20 years ago, it became the Lodge of the Rockies, which was condemned and closed in December as unauthorized changes made the building unsafe for occupancy.

In March, Jonah and Lana Hearne and her brother and sister-in-law, Shane and Merissa Long, bought the property and plan to restore the Club Hotel name and atmosphere by early 2022.

“We’re going back to the 1900s image of the property,” Jonah said, adding that he anticipated receiving permits to begin renovations soon.

Club Hotel will have 11 guest rooms, a manager’s apartment, and an event venue called Annex.

Once they get the permits, renovations should take five to six months, Jonah stated.

Since buying the property, the Hearnes and Longs have been getting it ready by removing all the unpermitted work and cleaning out the interior. In doing so, they found and saved a lot of historic items that EvergreenArtsWeek_half_horiz2.pdf were original to the property.

The new owners of the Club Hotel building, formerly the Lodge of the Rockies, at 1601 Colorado Blvd. are renovating the building into an 11-room hotel and event center. The Longs emphasized that they’re preserving the building’s history while also modernizing it,

Idaho Springs doc opens new clinic Local, affordable and personable.

That’s how Idaho Springs’ Dr. Terri Bowland described her relatively new family practice clinic on the second floor of the Gold Rush Center at 1800 Colorado Blvd.

Bowland, who lives in town, opened Enlightened DPC and Aesthetics in Feb. 2020, and offers primary care for patients of all ages.

She takes calls at all hours of the day and night because she wants to save her patients from visiting the emergency room or urgent care unless absolutely necessary.

She also offers reduced prescriptions, discounts on imaging, and free blood draws and cholesterol screenings, among other things.

Bowland hopes that by offering as many services as she can, it makes life easier for her patients who can’t make it to Denver because of a busy schedule or lack of transportation.

“Anything I can do to eliminate barriers for patients to get access to

quality health care ... I want patients in this community to thrive,” she said.

Enlightened DPC also has a different model than most clinics, as it’s membership-based. Bowland said this model “beats almost any commercial insurance,” and cost is based on age.

“What I see in the health care market is that it’s not a good value for patients,” she said of the insurancebased model, “and they’re not getting a return on their investment.

They’re not able to get the most basic services they need.”

For the remainder of August, Bowland is offering a free one-year membership for children if their parent becomes a member. In September, she’ll offer free 30-minute consultations.

“My practice is about building relationships,” she said. “If you show that you care, it’s a big step toward building trust. Trust is missing in health care today.”

New this year was the Gran Fondo competition.The 750 participants were given timing chips and were specifically timed on the climbing segments over all three of the passes, with prizes and glory awaiting the riders with the top times.

The charitable cycling organization Team Evergreen puts on the annual ride, which was canceled last year. Other community organizations help supply the roughly 500 volunteers needed to make the ride

happen. In return, Team Evergreen donates part of the proceeds to the participating organizations.

“Blue Spruce Kiwanis volunteers spent the night on Juniper Pass, so they could open the aid stations at 6:30 a.m.,” Raborn said.

Dawn’s early glow illuminated an upbeat vibe at the Evergreen start line. A “wall of donuts” and coffee awaited riders as they picked up their registration packets and commemorative jerseys. A young man with a drum kit provided a rhythmic soundtrack to riders passing through the start gate. Higher up, a bagpiper performed at the first pass.

Riders really do come from across the country to participate

The annual Triple Bypass road bike ride hits the road Aug. 21, after being canceled last year. Riders doing the full ride departed from Evergreen’s Buchanan Park. Many headed out around 6 a.m., but all participating riders had to depart by 8 a.m. in order to have a chance of completing the 106-mile course in time.

A member of the event staff confirmed that retired NFL quarterback Brett Favre was participating.

Another out-of-stater was Steve Olson from Tucson, Arizona.

‘I’m meeting my nephew and two brothers to do this,” he said.

The Fort Worth cycling team Health’s Angels, six riders strong, participated this year. The team usually participates in the Ride MS fundraising events and actually brags about being a top-fundraising team for its area.

“We were supposed to do (the Triple Bypass) last year for my 50th birthday party,” said team member Wayne McCrow But then the 2020 edition of the race was canceled.

“Longest 50th birthday party ever!” piped in teammate David Baker.

For other riders, the Triple Bypass is closer to home. Rider Kyle Griffith said he’s done the ride four times before. He said the ride is fun, just a good ride for some and competitive for others.

“I kind of love Loveland Pass because it’s pretty much halfway and not that tough.”

His least favorite part?

“On the Double Triple (the unsanctioned add-on to the Triple Bypass where riders do the whole course in reverse the following day), going back over Squaw (Juniper) Pass. ... I’m not doing that this year.

I’ve smartened up over the years.”

With 31 players total, more than half are freshmen and sophomores, Coach Danion Baca said. Between the nine freshmen plus five transfers, Clear Creek also has a lot of new players this fall.

“We’ll fill the JV team this year, because we have so many young guys,” he said.

During Thursday’s practice, Baca said he and his staff were focused on training up their linemen and “trying to get them up to speed” before the opening game Aug. 27 at Middle Park.

Looking at the season’s schedule, Baca said all the players, but particularly the seniors, are psyched to play rival Platte Canyon.

“The seniors haven’t beat Platte yet,” he continued, explaining that Platte Canyon played fall ball last year while Clear Creek played in the spring.

COVID cases rise; doctors frustrated with unvaccinated Delta variant more contagious, hospitals see more patients under 50

As the new delta variant of COVID spreads, hospitals and emergency rooms along the Front Range say they are seeing more patients but are not yet overwhelmed.

According to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, as of Aug. 20, ICU beds went from 72% to 80% occupancy over the preceding month. In the Denver metro area, hospital officials say they are handling the uptick well but remain concerned as the new COVID variant is a lot more transmissible.

According to UCHealth, after a steady decrease of COVID patients between April and mid-July, cases are steadily rising with more than 200 patients with confirmed or suspected COVID infections being admitted into UCHealth hospitals in Douglas and Adams counties.

Dr. Ben Usatch, emergency medicine physician and medical director of the UCHealth Highlands Ranch Hospital Emergency Department, said along with the increasing number of patients, frustration among health-care providers is rising.

Usatch said the difference between vaccinated patients with breakthrough COVID and unvaccinated patients is night and day. Most vaccinated patients come to the ER more out of fear and are quickly released, Usatch said.

“Really, we are seeing two flavors of COVID patients,” he said. “The vaccinated have a runny nose, maybe a slight fever and headache.

The unvaccinated are ending up in the ICU and deteriorating quickly.

The vaccine really does protect from serious disease. It is heart wrenching.”

Usatch said besides the delta variant being a lot more contagious, a big change from treating COVID patients from last year is age. Last year, hospitals were treating more

patients over 65. This year, most patients coming into emergency rooms are under 50 and unvaccinated, Usatch said.

At Sky Ridge Medical Center in Lone Tree, Chief Medical Officer Eric Young said they are not overwhelmed with patients, but the HealthOne hospital is seeing a steady increase of COVID cases between the ages of 18 and 50.

“I wouldn’t say we are inundated with patients at this point. We are managing them well,” he said. “The unvaccinated cases we are treating are a bigger concern. They are more contagious and have a lot more symptoms.”

Like Usatch, Lung said it is frustrating to have a vaccine option available but have emergency rooms still filling up with unvaccinated patients.

“The only way out of this pandemic is to get vaccinated,” Lung stressed.

Dr. Katie Sprinkle, an emergency room physician with the Medical Center of Aurora, said it is not about the delta variant, but about treating positive COVID cases.

“The people we are admitting are the unvaccinated,” she said. “In most cases, the breakthrough vaccinated patients are released. Hospitals across the city are going to keep getting full.”

In family medicine, Dr. Anne Jobman, of UCHealth Primary Care in Lone Tree, said general-care physicians have a lot of young adults and children presenting with COVID symptoms.

Jobman said she is recommending a lot of her adult patients go to the ER but children with COVID still seem to be handling the virus well.

“Delta has definitely become the dominant strain in the positive tests we are seeing,” she said. “Child cases are steadily climbing because it is so much more contagious, which is why we are seeing it in unvaccinated and vaccinated patients.

The unvaccinated patients who are under 50 are getting very sick.”

Jobman said vaccinated patients are getting better quickly, as they would with a common cold. Vaccinated patients are rarely being sent to hospitals for elevated treatment,

she said.

At Children’s Health Colorado (CHC), Kevin Carney, associate chief medical officer and pediatrics emergency medicine specialist, said there are a lot more concerns for children under 12 as the delta variant spreads.

With children under 12 still not eligible for the vaccine, Carney said they are more vulnerable for the highly contagious variant, especially with schools across the metro area starting this month.

With CHC facilities in Highland Ranch, Aurora, Centennial, Wheat Ridge, Parker and Broomfield, Car-

ney said officials are not hitting the panic button but remain on alert.

“Our cases in children are still average but above our lower numbers,” Carney said. “We are not overwhelmed but reports are showing cases are creeping up on us. As it continues to spread, we just keep recommending wearing masks, get the vaccine if you are eligible and wash hands and toys regularly.”

Carney said CHC has no doubt that children should be back in school in person, but precautions should be taken, including wearing masks to protect children who cannot yet get vaccinated.
