Weeks ago, U.S. volleyball player Haleigh Washington’s friends sent her a Clear Creek High School Golddigger shirt to remind the Idaho Springs native “to dig for the gold.”

On Sunday afternoon in Tokyo,

she did.

Washington had several crucial digs, serves, blocks and spikes in the final match against Brazil as the U.S. women’s volleyball team won its first Olympic gold medal.

“It’s everything we wanted it to be,” Washington said in a postmatch interview with NBC. “The hard work that we put in, the sweat, the tears, the blood — it’s been worth it; and I’m so proud to have done it with this group of women.

against Brazil, and went into a frenzy of celebration when Washington and her teammates made history.

“It’s amazing,” Washington’s former coach Angie Thoennes said of the U.S. win. “ … I’m so proud of her. She’s worked so hard, and she’s earned everything.”

According to Thoennes, Washington and her family plan to be in Idaho Springs on Aug. 21 to celebrate her Olympic achievement.

While plans are still in the works, Thoennes said a parade and/or block party is a possibility.

But the party really started Saturday night, local time, when more than 40 of Washington’s friends,

former coaches and teammates, and other supporters gathered at the Vintage Moose for a watch party for the gold medal match.

Before the match started at 10:30 p.m., they described watching Washington play in the Olympics as crazy, surreal and awesome.

“She’s still the same Haleigh she was in high school, just amplified,” former teammate and county resident Taylor Broaddus said. “ …

OBITUARIES LEYENDECKER

Barbara Bryan Leyendecker April 27, 1936 – July 27, 2021

Barbara Bryan Leyendecker, devoted wife, mother, and artist, age 85, died peacefully on July 27, 2021, after a long struggle with dementia.

Barbara was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on April 27, 1936, the only child of Jo Claire Bryan and France Rohrer Bryan. She took her first art lesson at age 4, in Santa Fe, under Alfred Morang. Art would become a life-long passion for Barbara. In the 1950s, her family moved to Albuquerque where she acquired an appreciation of Native American and Hispanic cultures, which impacted her values and approach to art. She attended the University of New Mexico for two years and graduated from the University of Colorado in Boulder with a B. A. in Fine Arts in 1960. In 1972, she completed a M. A. degree in Drawing and Print Making from the University of Northern Colorado.

On January 25, 1963, she married the love of her life, Liston Edgington Leyendecker. A daughter, Lucy Bryan, was born in 1968. In 1970, they adopted a child, Jessica.

Barbara worked as an art teacher for the Denver Public Schools, and as an art instructor at both Front Range Community College and Colorado State University. She mentored many fine artists. Barbara also enjoyed working for the Art Institute of Chicago, evaluating portfolios of prospective students. She lectured on a wide variety of subjects and her work was exhibited in Colorado and throughout the United States.

A very talented, multifaceted artist, Barbara worked in painting (all mediums), printmaking, drawing, collages, sculpture, book design, and jewelry. She

was uniquely perceptive, seeing art in everyday locales and architecture. If you had the good fortune to attend an art exhibit with her, she would begin to explain the nuances of the works and soon, a gaggle of other attendees would be following her around, fascinated by what she had to say.

Barbara loved traveling and nowhere more than Georgetown, Colorado, where in the 1990s she and Liston bought a mountain home. Georgetown was a special place where they established many enduring friendships.

Barbara was also a very fun-loving, playful person, blessed with a great sense of humor. She was a kind, loyal friend who hosted great parties. Her Christmas eve table, like everything else in her life, was a work of art. She also had an uncanny ability to strike up a conversation with anyone. Barbara Leyendecker will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

Barbara is survived by many friends; her daughter, Jessica Winter (Troy); and her grandchildren, Cory and Emmalee. She was preceded in death by her husband, Liston; late-in-life companion, John Pratt; and her daughter Lucy.

A Memorial Service will be held at Allnutt Drake Chapel, 650 W. Drake Road, Fort Collins, on Friday, August 27, 2021 at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Historic Georgetown, PO Box 667, Georgetown CO 80444; or the Scholarship Fund at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Office of Advancement, 116 S. County Briefs Meeting for Dumont property virtual Because of COVID-19 concerns, the Aug. 12 town hall meeting for the county-owned property on Dumont Road, formerly the Latter Day Saints church, will now be virtual only.

The meeting will be held via Zoom, 6-8 p.m. on Aug. 12, and attendees are free to join via the webinar or by phone.

The county will also have an online public comment period until Aug. 30, county staff has confirmed.

Clear Creek County bought the land in 2017 for $450,000, and other consultants have stated that the land and structure are worth closer to $900,000 and that higherdensity housing would be a better use of the property.

In recent months, the county has received three proposals for how to develop the 4.5-acre property, which will be discussed during the meeting.

3 spots up for election on school board The Clear Creek School District will have three board positions on the Nov. 2 ballot, and the district is encouraging interested candidates to self-nominate.

Representatives must live in District B, which is generally the northeast end of the county, District C in Idaho Springs or District D, which is the southeast portion of the county.

Mitch Houston, who represents District B, is term-limited and cannot run for the position again.

Kelly Flenniken, who represents District C, and Erica Haag, who represents District D, were both appointed to the board since the last election. They are eligible to run for election.

To be qualified, a candidate must have been a registered elector in the school district for at least 12 months before the election and a resident of the director district to be represented. A person is ineligible to run for the school board if he or she has been convicted of committing a sexual offense against a child.

A person interested in being a school board candidate must file a written notice of intention and a nomination petition signed by at least 25 eligible electors who are registered to vote in the school board election.

Nomination petitions are available at the former middle school, 320 Highway 103, Idaho Springs, between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Completed petitions must be submitted to Athena Iglesias, assistant to the school board, at the former middle school by 3 p.m. Aug. 27.

Idaho Springs clinic preparing for occupants Clear Creek County officials were expecting a certificate of occupancy last week for the collaborative care center in Idaho Springs.

A few projects around the property were also scheduled to be finished last week or this week, consultant Jim Pisula said at an Aug. 3 county commissioners meeting.

Pisula, the commissioners and county staff reviewed a draft of the office suites on the second floor.

Some will be occupied by county staff members, including Human Services and Public Health personnel; meanwhile, about seven will be for third-party entities, such as the Clear Creek Advocates and Jefferson Center for Mental Health, Pisula and others described.

According to Pisula, six of the seven third-party suites are “penciled in,” but the county doesn’t have signed leases for them yet.

Regarding the first floor, much of it will be taken up by the Centura clinic, and Pisula said he has a number of leads for the remainder of the first-floor space.

He has a signed letter of intent from a physical therapy group. “(The group wants) to figure out what it’s going to cost to build out their suite,” he said. “ … Hopefully, we’ll have finished this week and can send it out to contractors for preliminary pricing. If it U comes out as reasonable, we can S sign a lease.”

There are, in essence, two types of book that we encounter in our lives: there are the books we read purely for enjoyment, and there are those that we read in order to learn, think, and grow as people.

It’s a truly exciting moment when we find a book that belongs in both categories – one that entertains as it teaches, provoking thought and emotion in equal measure.

The French bestseller The Elegance of the Hedgehog is one such book. At first glance, it is a humorous and lighthearted summer read about a middle-aged woman and a young girl who live in a luxury apartment complex in Paris and are both far more intelligent than they let on. Their private journals are peppered with freeform poetry, biting social and political commentary, and strong opinions about grammar. But as the book continues, delving deeper into their thoughts, their feelings, their observations, and their struggles, it begins to feel less straightforward. The personal histories and bestkept secrets of the protagonists are slowly revealed, in between detailed and erudite chapters discussing philosophy and art and moving, lyrical descriptions of how it feels to be lonely and what it means to be known. Some of the more cerebral chapters might be challenging to get through, but persevering is well worth it, because every passage is ultimately significant in setting up the book’s shocking and profound conclusion.

The strength of the story lies with its two narrators, Renée and Paloma, whose distinct voices and vibrant personalities bring it to life. They are by turns endearing and frustrating as they navigate and comment on their radically different lives, with their thoughts often paralleling each other to give the reader each one’s unique

perspective on a subject. In the lightest moments, they’re hilarious, affectionate, and well worth rooting for; and when the book’s themes are at their most dark or difficult, it is the warm believability of these characters and the connections forged between them and the reader that guide the way through.

Saying “I laughed and I cried” sounds overdone and cliché, but I genuinely did both while reading this book. If you choose to read it, approaching it as a beach read to soak up with what’s left of summer, as a contemplative novel to stimulate the mind, or as some combination of the two, I hope that you’ll find it equally satisfying.

son despite the immense pressure of playing in the Olympics, Broaddus added.

Heather Haase, who coached Washington at CCHS, noticed how the gold medalist had retained some of the quirks — such as facial expressions and hitting techniques — that she had in high school.

Thoennes said she felt Washington had a strong individual performance in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, commenting, “She keeps the team fired up … and has a good attitude on the court.”

As for the team performance, Broaddus and Haase said they enjoyed watching the United States’ progress in Tokyo, with Broaddus saying that she felt the team really started to click in the semifinal match against Serbia.

Georgetown’s Jennifer Van Voorst, a family-friend of Washington’s, also thought the United States displayed strong teamwork and communication throughout the tournament.

Jennifer and her mom, Diana Van Voorst, used to volunteer at CCHS volleyball games when Washington lived in Clear Creek; and Washington used to babysit Jennifer’s

daughter, Jaylin, 13.

Jaylin said watching her former babysitter play in the Olympics has been a fun and cool experience.

Diana described how her family has been friends with the Washingtons for a long time, and remembered when Washington was a child and attended CCHS volleyball games with her parents even before she played.

While she last saw Washington in-person at her high school graduation party in Colorado Springs, Diana described how she’s enjoyed following her volleyball career since then.

“It’s surreal when you know that person and you’ve seen them grow up,” she said of watching Washington play in the Olympics.

Because there were no fans in the stands during the Olympics, Washington stated that getting pictures and videos from her friends and family reminded her that “even if they’re not in the stands here, they’re still in our corner back home.”

“I am so grateful to have such an amazing support system back in (Colorado),” Washington wrote in an email to the Courant on Friday. “ … I am so incredibly blessed to be surrounded by such joy and such love. Thank you to everyone. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

VOICES Recognition begins with appreciation

The business operates seven days a week in the summer months. Some days are busier than others, with customers waiting in line. Most wait patiently while others, well … not so much. Inventories can run low, and sometimes be out of stock. The point-of-sale system is usually working properly, but sometimes it needs a little troubleshooting. Not to mention the cleaning, maintenance, and routine chores that must be tended to daily that are required to keep the business running properly and ensuring amazing customer service.

Observing this team of overachievers, I was super impressed. They worked well together, smiled while they worked, took a genuine interest in their customers, and created a wow experience for everyone they served. Many times, I saw them go above and beyond in the way of customer care. They worked in harmony to get the job done. It was a sense of teamwork rarely displayed in even the best of corporate environments.

As in any business, shifts need to be changed and covered, illnesses happen, family vacations are planned, and unexpected events can

disrupt even the tightest schedules.

The team came up with a system to make sure that all shifts would be covered, and although it came close a few times, they never found themselves short-staffed.

This was a wellMichael Norton coached staff and an extremely bright and motivated team that worked so hard to get the job done. Some were leaders, some grew into leaders, and watching them this season, I knew that some were future leaders. Not only in this business, but I could tell that these were individuals who would contribute to the success of any organization that would be lucky enough to hire them and who would be both emerging and transformational leaders wherever they would go.

Oh, by the way, I am referring to a staff of about 22 hard-working, loyal, and awesome young ladies ranging in age from 14 to 20. They are such an impressive team, truly

one of the most talented, smart, and fun staff I have had the privilege of witnessing in my many years in business. Kudos to each one of them and a big shout out to the woman behind these young ladies, Kim Norton. As the owner and Chief Ice Cream Mixologist of Norton’s Main Scoop, she puts so much effort into interviewing, hiring, training, and developing the team. And more importantly, she has a deep respect and appreciation for each person on the team. Even more than making some ridiculously delicious ice cream, the team’s growth, safety, and well-being are her top priorities.

Although the business operates seven days a week for the summer, Kim decided to completely close the shop for a day this year to throw a staff appreciation party. She closed so that everyone could attend. Each team member had opportunities to share stories, great memories, funny customer experiences, and further bond as a team. And they all received small gifts as a show of appreciation. And some received awards for Most Valuable Player, Rookie of the Year, and other such honors.

It felt more like a family gathering

instead of a company event.

Some of the girls have been a part of the business for the past four seasons and will be leaving for college.

Their contributions will never be forgotten, their smiles will remain a part of the business forever, and their positive attitude will be their legacy for those who follow behind them.

Whether it’s a business on Main Street or a Fortune 500 company, recognizing our team members begins with appreciation. When the people on our teams feel appreciated and recognized for their contributions, there is a much greater chance that they will stay with us, grow with us, or if and when they do leave, they will leave our business in much better condition then when they first arrived.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Support for area firefighting departments Having grownup in Estes Park, Colorado, I fell in love with mountain village life. I tried city living out of necessity while going to college. Hated it, so moved back to the hills as soon as possible.

There are gambles involved wherever you live. Forest fires have always been a gamble you take to partake of the advantages of the many other attributes of mountain living. Better, in my mind, than getting run over in the city or shot by some gun-toting nut in the grocery store.

One of the things that lessen the gamble of fire is a well operated fire department such as Evergreen Fire/Rescue. Volunteers mostly, but dedicated and well trained.

Having budgeted a replacement of a facility that is obsolete and condemned because of road changes only to have to defend the expenditure against a group that wants the fire department to spend the money cutting down trees on private property seems to me an insult to dedicated volunteers.

Despite everything I have tried, I keep having birthdays. After 85 of them, I have needed the fire department’s emergency medical technicians on three or four occasions, and they were here within a very few minutes.

Come on. fellow citizens. please leave the fire professionals and volunteers to run this vital agency.

BLOTTER Crime Calls from July 19-Aug. 1

Tuesday, July 20 — Empire police responded to a shots-fired call in the 400 block of South Main Street.

Three teenagers were driving around and reportedly using a B.B. gun to shoot at signs near Minton Park and Bard Creek.

Friday, July 24 — Georgetown police conducted a traffic stop in the 1900 block of Argentine Street involving a driver whose license was revoked for multiple alcohol convictions. The driver was arrested and booked into the county jail.

Friday, July 24 — Georgetown police conducted a traffic stop along 22nd Street involving a driver who had a restraint for judgment and couldn’t legally operate a vehicle.

She also had a warrant for her arrest. She was arrested and booked into the county jail on the warrant and issued a summons for the suspected traffic offense.

Saturday, July 25 — Sheriff’s deputies and Empire police responded to a fight-in-progress call in the 7300 block of U.S. Highway 40. An intoxicated man was attempting to get into another person’s car, and he

and the owner reportedly got into a brief physical fight. The intoxicated man walked away, but was contacted later by law enforcement.

According to those involved, two women had been in a financial arrangement wherein one owed the other money but hadn’t been paid back. When the first woman came to collect, the latter refused. So, the first pushed past her into the room and to take her wallet and the contents within. The woman staying there declined to press charges, saying she only wanted her possessions back. The items were returned, and the situation was resolved without further incident.

Saturday, July 30 — Empire police investigated a hit-and-run accident. An unknown driver hit a parked vehicle in town, and then left the scene without providing information or reporting the accident.

Saturday, July 25 — Georgetown police conducted a traffic stop on the eastbound Interstate 70 on-ramp involving a driver who couldn’t legally operate a vehicle. The driver also had an active warrant for his arrest.

He was arrested and booked into the county jail on the warrant and issued a summons for the suspected traffic offense.

Sunday, July 26 — Empire police responded to an overdose. A person at the scene started CPR as another provided Narcan. After a few minutes of CPR, the person regained consciousness. Those involved then left the scene, as no responding personnel was able to locate them. An Empire officer has since contacted the individuals about the situation.

When officers arrived, the parties had separated and described how an altercation had started between roommates over care of the dogs. One person involved was reportedly intoxicated and sent to detox, as the other didn’t want to press charges.

Saxon Mountain Road reopens after county staff, volunteers address problem areas

A four-mile section of Saxon Mountain Road above Georgetown has reopened after county staff and volunteers addressed safety concerns along the road.

On July 20, county commissioners approved a two-week closure to give crews time to assemble and improve the road.

With confirmation that the road was much safer, commissioners allowed the closure to lapse on Aug. 4.

During the July 20 county commissioners meeting, Sheriff Rick Albers recommended the closure, as he felt an increase in amateur 4x4 drivers and deteriorating road conditions made for a very dangerous situation.

He pointed out that Clear Creek emergency personnel responded to a rollover accident on Saxon Mountain Road in early July, and that there was a fatal accident on the road about 10 years ago.

Albers initially recommended a 90-day closure, but 4x4 community members objected, saying it would effectively end Saxon Mountain’s 4x4 season several months early.

members confirmed much of the deterioration has been there for a while, but Albers emphasized that amateur drivers didn’t know how to navigate these tricky spots. Plus, websites about local 4x4 routes describe the road as easy.

At the Aug. 3 county commissioners meeting, county staff members and Mile Hi Jeep Club representatives said they’d taken several measures to improve the situation.

Two problem areas along the road were addressed.

Several 4x4 websites have changed the road’s description from “easy” to something more accurate.

The county staff and Mile Hi Jeep Club will draw up an arrangement to ensure the road is maintained properly, relative to its primitive status.

James Kovaly, the county’s trail supervisor, described how his team and at least one volunteer from the Mile Hi Jeep Club trekked up Saxon Mountain Road the week of July 26 to tackle two problem areas.

Both involved large boulders in the road. The first boulder was one that drivers had to navigate over at an awkward angle, Kovaly said. Meanwhile, the second required drivers to go around it on the low side of the road, near a steep drop-off.

dragged to the lower side of the road to create more room between the pieces.

Road & Bridge Director Karl Schell thanked the Mile Hi Jeep Club for helping county staff assess the road so quickly, saying the work the staff and volunteers did in late July “should satisfy the sheriff’s concerns.”

Mark Woodworth, a club member, said he and his fellow volunteers planned to be back on Saxon Mountain Road over the weekend, if not sooner, for additional maintenance projects.

While Albers was not at the Aug. 3 commissioners meeting, Commissioner Randy Wheelock agreed that the crews had addressed the areas that were Albers’ greatest concerns. Thus, Wheelock and his colleagues were OK with letting the closure lapse.

Seeing a congregation of emergency response vehicles at Empire’s Minton Park last Tuesday might have caused an uninformed person’s heart to skip a beat as they were passing by, but there was no cause for alarm.

In fact, event organizers hope that this sight every first Tuesday of August will be a positive one for years to come.

On Aug. 3, the Empire Police Department hosted the county’s first National Night Out. Neighborhoods and first responders across the country participate every first Tuesday of August, including several municipalities and counties across the Denver metro area. However, Lorenz said that, as far as he knew, this was the first time any Clear Creek entity has participated.

The event, which started in 1984, is an annual community-building campaign that provides an opportunity for residents to meet their neighbors and their first responders “in a low-key situation,” organizer and Empire officer Andrew Lorenz described.

National Night Out is similar to the local C3 festival, he explained, which has been discontinued but had the same concept of people meeting first responders in a lowstress environment.

Almost all the first-response

agencies in Clear Creek attended the event in Empire, and Lorenz said local businesses and residents donated almost $1,000 in raffle prizes and food for the volunteers.

During the raffle, about 80 people were in attendance, including first responders and volunteers. Given that the event was new, Lorenz said his attendance goal was 50-100 people, but he hoped to build on that in subsequent years.

“Not a lot of people know about it yet,” he said of bringing National Night Out to Clear Creek.

He added that, if there’s enough interest, other communities and agencies in the county could host their own in the future, so that there would be multiple National Night Out events in county.

Golden’s Todd Martens, a member of Alpine Rescue Team, was among the first responders who was meeting with the attendees and demonstrating pieces of equipment.

Martens described how participating at National Night Out and similar events provides opportunities to educate the community and bring awareness “on how to be safe before needing Alpine Rescue.”

It was also a good time for rescue team members to meet with the agencies they work with, such as the Sheriff’s Office and Clear Creek EMS, outside of an emergency, he said.

National Night Out drew a lot of local families, especially those with young children, including Dumont’s Dalene Willson and her 3-year-old grandson Colton McKellip.

Willson said the two of them were enjoying looking at all the emergency vehicles, visiting with

friends and getting some exercise.

Sue and Frank Mauracher of Empire also brought their 1-yearold grandson James LaGuardia to see all the vehicles, explaining that he really likes trucks and ambulances.

They were also hoping to see the Flight for Life helicopter, which had to cancel because of the rain.

Frank said that it was important to bring James to an event like National Night Out, commenting, “The younger, the better … so they

know all their lives that these are good things.”

He also stated that he wanted to see more events in general at Minton Park as it’s a nice space.

The Maurachers and Willson both said they would return to National Night Out if Empire continued hosting.

A flood of funny fowl Annual Dam Ducky Derby is exciting time for all ages

For children at the Dam Ducky Derby, it’s difficult to tell which is more entertaining: the 5,500 ducks that fall from above the Evergreen dam into Bear Creek or the fire engine that drops the ducks or the chilly water that they can wade in before the festivities begin.

Saturday’s 12th annual derby, which brought thousands to downtown Evergreen, did not disappoint.

Volunteers sold the final ducks, while vendors were available in both the downtown and Cactus Jack’s parking lots. Families gathered below the dam and on the walkways, waiting for the five-second freefall when the ducks make their way to the water.

With the ducks in the creek, the duck wranglers used large poles to help them to the finish line just before Highland Haven Creekside Inn on the east end of downtown.

The top and last-place finishers win awards.

Volunteers Kathy Madison and Jan Miller said duck sales were brisk before the drop, noting that they told would-be purchasers that

they were selling the winning ducks, not simply the lucky ducks.

“It was great fun, and it’s for a good cause,” Miller said of volunteering for the derby.

Proceeds from the derby help fund the annual Holiday Walk in December and will go to Foundation 1023, a Conifer-based nonprofit that offers funding to first-responding agencies to enhance their peer-support networks.

Madison said while she has volunteered for the derby for several years, this was her first time seeing the duck drop, which she called “so cool.”

Miller attended the duck derby including the drop for the first time.

“The atmosphere is great,” she said. “All the kids are so excited, and the leadup to the drop is fun, too.”

The duck wranglers had their work cut out for them as stragglers got caught on the creek banks despite the rushing water.

Ducky, the derby’s mascot, walked along Main Street, greeting attendees. Ducky, aka Michaya Moore,

a Conifer High School student, decided to take on the mascot task because she thought it would be fun.

She was the subject of many photographs, hugs, high-fives and more.

Among the food booths was Aqua Duck Farms in Littleton, selling duck cookies, duck-decorated cupcakes and more, all made using duck eggs — a fitting tribute to the little yellow fowl.

Jennifer and Jeremy Barnett brought their children, figuring they’ve been to the derby at least a half-dozen times because their kids love the carnival games, duck drop and the water.

Courtney and Josh Stein brought Nolan, 3, and Hudson, 9 months, to witness the duck drop, noting that it was a tossup for Nolan on which was cooler: the ducks or the fire truck.

The family brought a large plastic duck in honor of the occasion because, as Josh put it, “we couldn’t leave home without it.”

Shortage of cans hobbles craft brewers Supply crunch causes problems for one of Colo.’s signature industries

Talbott’s Cider Company used to package its hard cider mimosas in colorful cans purchased for 12 cents each from a Westminster supplier.

But a monthslong supply crunch has forced the Palisade cidery to get creative: Now, the cans come blank from Korea and are wrapped by hand in a waterproof label — more than doubling the cost.

It’s a struggle going on all over Colorado as breweries and cideries have scrambled to find new suppliers of aluminum cans and related materials due to soaring demand and an international dearth of the lightweight metal containers. The scarcity has increased costs that in some cases are passed on to consumers.

Manufacturers say the pandemic dovetailed with a growing preference for infinitely recyclable aluminum over plastic bottles, and a booming enthusiasm for canned hard seltzers. Breweries and cideries, meanwhile, abruptly shifted to cans — over kegs — for survival when the coronavirus shuttered bars and restaurants, prompting people to drink more at home.

Steve Findley, executive director of the Colorado Beer Distributors Association, said brewers have felt the pinch.

“My members carry all the major brands — Miller, (Molson Coors), Anheuser-Busch imports and also crafts — and we are seeing a lot of out-of-stocks lately,” Findley said.

Packaged alcohol sales have slowed since their pandemic highs last summer, but some breweries still can’t get the price, quantity or container they want as they go through peak selling season for canned beer, said Bart Watson, chief economist at the Brewers Association, a national trade group based in Boulder. Colorado may be more

affected than other states due to its concentration of craft breweries using cans, he said.

The can shortage first hit Talbott’s Cider Company in the summer of 2020. Operations manager Charles Talbott said he received an email saying it would be about a year before the cidery could get cans from its usual supplier, Westminsterbased Ball Corp., one of a few giant can producers in the U.S. The company struggled to find replacements. Talbott had to store cider in chilled tanks as he tried to find cans to package it in.

He ultimately turned to cans imported from Korea (17 cents each) which an employee feeds by hand into a machine to wrap it in a high-quality waterproof label (9 to 13 cents each). They have to order a minimum of 16 pallets at a time — each with more than 7,000 cans — and have partnered with a local brewery, Palisade Brewing Company, to get a bulk-order price.

“Your bigger producers, your large domestic breweries got first right on a lot of (the cans), and unless you were ordering a sufficient amount from Ball, you kind of got put at the back of the list,” said Talbott, who now doesn’t expect to get preprinted cans from Ball until 2022. “Anytime you let something sit for that long, you … can have issues,” he added, of the cider stored in the tank.

Pandemic slammed breweries The shortages come as more than 30 breweries in Colorado have shut down during the pandemic, the greatest number of closures since Prohibition, said Shawnee Adelson, executive director of the Colorado Brewers Guild. Cideries and breweries of all sizes have been affected by the lack of cans, which industry experts forecast will continue through the next year as can-production facilities build the capacity to meet demand. Other beverages sold in cans, like soda, have been similarly affected.

Scott McCarty, a spokesman for Ball, one of the largest can producers in the world, said the company is adding new production lines and building three new plants that are expected to add at least “6 billion units of can capacity.”

single-use plastics, he doesn’t see the demand for cans declining. Hard seltzers have had explosive growth, and soft drinks and sparkling water are also now shifting to be packaged more in cans. Hard seltzers accounted for more than $4.6 billion in retail sales in the last 12 months, up from $910 million in the 12 months that ended in July 2019, according to NielsenIQ data provided to the Colorado Sun. Demand for cans was unprecedented in 2020 and hasn’t slowed in 2021, McCarty said.

Migration has major impact on Denver metro religion Making sense of new county-level data on religious diversity

The Denver metro area is religiously diverse and it’s becoming increasingly so.

A new study by the Public Religion Research Institute – called the 2020 Census on American Religion – found that “religious diversity scores” for Adams, Arapahoe, Douglas, and Jefferson counties in 2020 were all above average when compared to the rest of the U.S. The average religious diversity score by county in the country — on a scale of .02 to 0.9 — is 0.62. Meanwhile, Arapahoe County received a score of 0.81, Adams County was 0.79, Clear Creek was 0.727, Douglas County was 0.77, and Jefferson County was 0.78.

The array of religious identities in the state — where one religious subset doesn’t represent more than half of the population — doesn’t surprise Carl Raschke, professor of religious studies at the University of Denver.

“Historically, Colorado has been a place for religious freedom and religious experimentation,” Raschke said. “Colorado is a lot harder place than other parts of the country to figure out or get an actual profile out of.”

cans, their costs have gone up,” she said. “It’s a difficult time and it’s unfortunate that this happened when it did because it was just like a double whammy for a lot of breweries, especially the packaging breweries, to try to handle the pandemic as well.”

The extra costs have hit Palisade Brewing Company, which began buying imported cans with Talbott’s Cider Company and labeling them onsite.

When the brewery found out in September that it wouldn’t get an expected shipment of 12-ounce beer cans, the news set off a whirlwind to find replacements before the company ran out of its remaining two- to four-week supply.

Head brewer Danny Wilson said he scoured a half-dozen websites each day looking for anyone selling a pallet — a piecemeal alternative to the brewery’s typical practice of ordering 24 pallets at a time. The company switched over to the more available 16-ounce cans. It bought blank cans — rather than preprinted containers — and leased a labeler from another brewer to add stickers to each.

The cost per can went up. But there wasn’t a real alternative.

“We are a small company so having a year’s worth of revenue just sitting there — it’s not what we do,” Wilson said. “We still have bills to pay, we still have contracts for hops,

Muslim, Hindus and “nones” In Clear Creek County, white evangelical Christians now account for 13% of the population. Averaging data for Arapahoe, Adams, Douglas and Jefferson counties, white evangelical Christians represent 16% of the population, 8% are Hispanic Catholic, 1% are Muslim, 2% are Jewish, and 31% are religiously unaffiliated.

Clear Creek was less diverse in terms of minority categories, with 1% Hispanic Catholic, and 0% in Muslim, Jewish and Hindu. Some 46% of the county respondents identified as unaffiliated Christian.

Across the U.S., the average for white evangelical Christians is 14%, 8% are Hispanic Catholic, 1% are Muslim, 1% are Jewish, and 23% are religiously unaffiliated. The countylevel data is from a PRRI survey that collected hundreds of thousands of responses from adults across the

country between 2013 to 2019.

Tracing similar data from previous years is difficult, given that the county-level data in the 2020 Census on American Religion is the first of its kind.

Anecdotally, Rashcke said some of the fastest-growing religious affiliations in the metro area are Muslims, Hindus, and religiously unaffiliated, also called “nones.” There are a few reasons for that.

First, Raschke said, “what’s happening in Denver is pretty much following religious and demographic trends nationwide.” What’s happening in the U.S., such as the dramatic rise of the nones, is happening here.

However, certain migration patterns also uniquely affect the Denver area’s religious makeup.

“As you migrate more people to a place, it changes. And it is influenced by those that are moving in and the size that is moving in,” said

Elizabeth Garner, state demographer with the Colorado Department of Local Affairs.

One of those groups is young adults, representing a large percentage of the nones in the U.S. “Typically, when we migrate people to Colorado, and to Denver, we migrate young adults,” Garner said.

Then there are racial and ethnic minority groups coming to the Denver metro area from within the U.S. and outside. Both have a major impact on Colorado, Garner said.

In Colorado, “...migration has a larger influence than birth. Not every state is the same,” Garner said.

“In terms of religion, that’s what I would assume as well. Is that where we migrate people from, and those trends will influence what happens in the state.”

The company on July 26 also received a truckload of blank cans from a domestic supplier, saving them a few cents per can.

While government funding and a big uptick in to-go sales helped breweries financially weather the pandemic, he said more might have increased their package sales had they been able to get cans.

“Not being able to get enough cans meant a lot of them couldn’t sell as much as there was actually demand out there,” he said.

In-brewery sales have held up better than draft sales at bars and restaurants, he said.

The shortages extend beyond cans for beer and cider.

Findley, with the beer distributors association, said his members are starting to see a shortage of bottles and are battling a lack of warehouse workers and truck drivers to deliver products to restaurants, liquor stores and grocers.

Talia Haykin, who owns Haykin Family Cider, a small-batch cider company, says the cost to ship corks, bottles and apples has shot up recently. The Aurora-based company bottles its cider due to its high carbonation level, she said.

Haykin orders German-made bottles from a company in Canada that recently warned in an email that increased freight costs would be passed on — in the form of a $175 surcharge per pallet. The corks, imported from Portugal and supplied by a California company, were out of stock for a period and then their shipping costs abruptly increased from $100 to $175 per bag. And when Haykin tried to order shipments of apples and juice from the West

Coast, she couldn’t find truckers to take the load.

“If all of our costs are increasing all around us, the question has to become, do we then increase … the cost of our goods?” said Haykin, noting the cost of her accounting software has also gone up. “Because there’s only so much you can absorb as a small business.”

Manufacturers are few There are a handful of can manufacturers in the country and even before the pandemic, they were used to dealing with companies of “extreme scale,” like Anheuser-Busch or Molson Coors, which have huge Colorado operations, said Watson, the Brewers Association economist.

Those larger companies would likely be first in line to get cans as supply becomes available. Most craft brewers, defined as producing no more than 6 million barrels of beer a year, go through intermediary brokers, and are fairly new to using cans — 10 years ago, “it would almost all be in the other bottles or kegs,” he said.

Brokers and suppliers have imported cans, but Canada and Europe have had similar supply problems, Watson said. Some buyers looked to China but there were concerns about tariffs, quality and “stretching your supply chain that far.”

While Denver might have Meow Wolf, Evergreen has one better: Meow ELK. Meow ELK is an artistic collaboration of sorts between the Cat Care Society in Lakewood and the Evergreen Area Chamber of Commerce. The society, which is a cat rescue, has 32 painted cats and dogs displayed at The Evergreen Gallery in downtown Evergreen in antici-

pation of its gala on Sept. 11. The chamber has elk in different media displayed throughout Evergreen as part of the “Where Are the Elk” art walk.

It’s a fun matchup showing the varied artwork available in Evergreen, and the kickoff was Saturday afternoon at the gallery.

Kitties galore A variety of artists created the one-of-a-kind cats, which will be auctioned at the society’s largest fundraiser.

Executive Director Jan Kelley said the Tails of the Painted Cats fundraiser is every other year, and she was pleased with how gallery owner

Beth Riser placed the cats throughout the space.

The gallery has been renamed a cattery during August to accommodate the felines.

Kay Higgins, president of the society’s board, enjoyed the range of cats from the Octopuss with eight legs to the Puzzle Me This cat with jigsaw puzzle pieces to Sparky Fluxerton adorned with license-plate pieces.

There’s something for everyone with an affinity for cats.

Riser, a cat lover, has hosted the Cat Care Society’s cats in the past and wanted to bring them back. She said she reached out to the society last year to let the organization

known she was ready for her gallery to become a cattery again.

Chamber President Nancy Judge said this was a way for the artist community to partner with business owners and nonprofits. The goal was 20 elk art installations around the community, and she was blown away by the number of people wanting to participate.

Some businesses are down the hill or operate out of their homes, so those who wanted to participate were partnered with nonprofits, so no one was left out, she said.

“This (event) is great because it brings awareness to some of the businesses and artists that people may not have heard of before,” Judge said. “With this event, we can do both at the same time.”

Clear Creek soccer players receive all-state honors

Breyda Spinner and Rylie Young of the Clear Creek girls soccer team were named to the all-state 2A second team for the 2021 spring season.

The list of all-state honors was released mid-July, following a lengthy nomination process and then a vote by head coaches throughout Colorado.

Spinner and Young, who both play at striker/forward, also received

all-conference honors, Coach Dan Ebert said. However, the all-state honors were a pleasant surprise and a great honor for both, he continued, adding that it’s a testament to their work as both players and leaders.

Spinner, who will be a senior this year, continues to be a leader on the team both in terms of morale and playmaking, Ebert described.

Additionally, despite being a freshman last year, Young also proved to be a major force for the program.

With 22 goals, she was one of the top scorers in 2A for the season, he said.

While there’s plenty of time until the soccer season begins in late February, Ebert said there’s already a lot of excitement around the program. The varsity team only lost two starters, and Ebert said he anticipates having a deep roster and high hopes when 2022 play kicks off.

And, no doubt Spinner and Young will continue to shine when it does.

“Both of them could score more,

but it’s about doing what’s right for the team,” Ebert said. “I don’t think either one of them thought about (making all-state).”

The Finance Director, under general direction of the County Manager, optimizes the financial performance of the County in order to fulfill the Board of County Commissioners’ priorities and goals. The Director is responsible for the planning, organizing,

and directing of finance operations and implementing the County’s financial, accounting, budgeting and purchasing policies and directives. The position evaluates and advises County Manager and the BoCC on long range financial planning and provides clear, succinct and accurate data for fiscal decision making along with timely and reliable reports on the County’s financial status and budgetary performance. The Finance Director ensures the County’s financial compliance with state and federal laws, establishes and maintains internal controls, coordinates and manages the budget process, and prepares the comprehensive annual financial report. The position provides leadership and direction to 2.5 budgeted FTE positions in the Department.

The selected executive search firm shall specialize in recruitment for municipal organizations, as defined in the Scope of Services, and/or have extensive executive-level personnel recruitment experience. Proposing firms must demonstrate that they, or the principals assigned to the project, have successfully completed engagements similar to those specified in the Scope of Services section of this RFP and to organizations similar in size and complexity to the County. All proposals submitted must remain valid for a minimum period of ninety (90) days after the date of the proposal opening.

SCOPE OF SERVICES The contractor shall perform all Services described in this section and all obligations set forth in the professional services agreement.

The contractor will conduct a national recruitment (including attracting, interviewing, and hiring) of a Finance Director and assist the County Manager in selecting a qualified candidate, including the following services: 1. Working with the County Manager and Leadership Team to develop characteristics and attributes of the successful candidate, selection criteria, and recruitment process; 2. Developing recruitment strategies and timelines for approval by the County; 3. Developing an accurate and enticing job profile and a custom brochure describing the Finance Director position, the County organization and the community, for approval by the County; 4. Conducting targeted recruitment of qualified and experienced individuals; 5. Marketing the position on a local, regional and national basis (including social media, online job listings, and other appropriate resources); 6. Receiving and processing application materials; 7. Providing initial screening of all applications against the qualifications required in the job description and recommending potential semifinalists and documenting the reasons for not selecting applications; 8. Assisting the County Manager in the selection of semifinalists and finalists; 9. Conducting credential verification and background referencing at the appropriate time; 10. Developing and coordinating a final selection process with the County Manager, including interviews with County Manager and staff, City tours, and interaction with County employees and community members; 11. Planning for any on-site portion of the process including scheduling travel and lodging arrangements, per County specifications; 12. Conducting all background and reference checks on the final candidate(s); and, 13. Providing timely notification and any necessary follow up and feedback to all candidates not selected for the position.
