The crowd first erupted with boos when Superintendent Corey Wise displayed a slide saying the district was recommending universal masking at school.

That opened a contentious meeting where many attendees called for an end to pandemic precautions and refuted COVID-19 science, such as the validity of testing and efficacy of face coverings.

DCSD is among school districts across metro Denver and beyond that have been establishing markwearing policies and other rules to address the threat of COVID-19 as the new school year approaches. In Douglas County, school opened the week of Aug. 9.

Anxiety over new school year higher during pandemic Health experts advise routine and structure for back-to-school

When starting a new school year in a new grade with a new teacher, it is common to face first-day jitters.

However, experts say back-to-school anxiety in 2021 is elevated due to continuously changing rules and procedures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Kristin Orlowski, a psychologist with UCHealth, said elementary students and teenagers thrive on structure and consistency. In 2020, consistency and structure became unstable with online schooling, mandates, and procedures creating confusion and stress as federal, state and local health officials grappled with how to keep children safe.

The bottom line, Orlowski said, is that online schooling is not an effective alternative to in-person learning. Students fell behind in academics and social development, she said.

When students are out of sorts, stressed and depressed, Orlowski said studies show they do not retain or learn new things as well.

Like other hospitals along the Front Range, UCHealth facilities have seen an uptick in cases involving young people dealing with

depression, substance abuse and mental illness. UCHealth has locations in Parker, Highlands Ranch, Aurora, Lone Tree and Denver, As school is slated to start in Douglas, Arapahoe, Adams and Jefferson counties this month, the debate over mask mandates is revving up. Orlowski said as school administrators debate whether to require masks, parent anger and frustrations are spilling over, and students are hearing it.

Dr. Anat Geva, clinician supervisor for HealthOne Behavioral Health Centers, said the biggest problem for students in the pandemic is the “unknown.”

“The other part of that is the unknown can change quickly during a pandemic,” she said. “You might have a student already stressed about a new teacher and new classroom, but there is also concern classes will get canceled or mask restrictions are suddenly put in place again. Really, everything can flip 180 degrees from one day to the next.

The unknown is always a problem.”

Geva said this has led students to be more apathetic and avoid issues altogether. Adults and children alike are ignoring news and updates because they figure the situation will just change tomorrow, she said.

According to studies provided by HealthOne, which serves patients in Centennial, Aurora and Ken Caryl, self-harm claims among teenagers in 2020 increased by more than 300%.

Earlier this summer, Children’s Hospital Colorado (CHC) declared a crisis in treating young people for mental health conditions. Experts and doctors say the primary reason for the increase in cases is the continued disruption to their daily lives the pandemic has caused. CHC treats young patients in Highlands Ranch, Wheat Ridge, Parker, Aurora, Denver, Centennial, Broomfield and Colorado Springs.

As medical professionals remained concerned with how young people are handling the added stressors posed by COVID-19 at the start of a new school year, Orlowski and Geva agree that parents and students can take steps to decrease and limit anxiety.

As the first days of school draw closer, steps to prepare for a new school year during a pandemic include: Get back to set bedtimes — A regular bedtime helps establish routine and help students get enough sleep.

Stay on schedule — From dinner to athletics and activities, Orlowski said a set schedule and routine can help students adjust to a new school year faster.

Stop the stressful chatter — Constant discussion about the pandemic, rules and frustrations with mandates can cause anxiety in children. Just talking to students about what they need to do without opinions and anger can help alleviate anxiety.

Teach students to be accepting — Orlowski said schools, parents and society are already teaching students to be accepting of everyone to avoid bullying. With the pandemic, acceptance also means masks. If a student attends a school where masks are optional, students not wearing masks should accept those choosing to wear them.

Be positive — Geva said it is important that parents and adults work to make the best of any situation. Being as positive as possible can make a difference, she said.

Students should be assured they are not alone, Geva stressed. Others are going through the same thing.

Always communicate — Geva said talking frankly with children can help a lot. Answering their questions, speaking honestly and asking them how they are feeling can keep the lines of communication open.

Get help if needed — Orlowski said it is important to get acquainted with help outside the home. If a student is struggling with anxiety due to more serious issues, it may be time to seek help from school counselors or a qualified clinician.

Geva said HealthOne has behavioral health centers throughout the region, and if symptoms of depression and anxiety continue to increase, parents should consider professional help outside the home and school.

Watch for signs of anxiety in children — Indications of anxiety include appearing more clingy than normal, being restless and fidgety, complaining of stomachaches or headaches, changes in eating and sleeping habits, expressing negative thoughts and worries, getting upset quickly, becoming more emotional than usual, struggling to concentrate, picking at their skin and being too compliant in trying to please without addressing their own anxiety.

A prospective rezoning proposal has some Castle Rock residents on edge over the idea of a 24-hour Kum & Go gas station and convenience store being built close to a residential neighborhood.

With dozens of residents calling in to a July 29 virtual neighborhood meeting, many expressed safety concerns with having a gas station in proximity to the homes in the Lanterns Planned Development near the southwest corner of Crystal Valley Parkway and Plum Creek Boulevard.

Town officials have stressed that an applicant has not officially come forward to request the 1.5-acre lot be rezoned. Instead, the neighborhood meetings are being held to hear about the proposed project and gain feedback.

Currently, the permitted uses for the property include retail sales and service, grocery stores, drugstores, convenience goods, personal service shops, restaurants, fast food with a drive-thru, banks, offices, medical/ dental offices, and insurance businesses.

Since the property’s current zoning allows for commercial development, according to the town website, the issue at hand deals solely with allowing fuel services.

To have a gas station on the prem-

ises, prospective developers would need the town to approve a zoning amendment.

According to town documents, if the proposed plan moves forward, the site plan would include a convenience store building and fueling islands. The building is estimated to be about 5,620 square feet and would follow the Kum & Go franchise store concepts.

Kum & Go is a convenience store chain that primarily operates in the Midwest. The company, with headquarters in Iowa, operates 400 stores in 11 states, including Colorado.

Convenience Store News ranked the Kum & Go franchise as the 24thlargest convenience store chain in the U.S. For residents near the proposed Kum & Go site, there are concerns with safety.

Nearby resident Allison Schortje said she is not excited about the precedent that would be set by a change in zoning.

“If a developer is allowed to rezone after the fact, that means a gas station could be coming to an open space near you,” she said. “We cannot allow this to happen to our city.

Once one developer is successful in rezoning, all undeveloped land will be at risk.”

Residents have also expressed concerns with gas stations increasing crime rates, creating fire hazards, and having a negative impact on the environment.

Crowfoot Valley Road design open house set Castle Rock to hold public meeting on Aug. 19 STAFF REPORT

Planned improvements for Crowfoot Valley Road continue as the Town of Castle Rock will host a public meeting on Aug. 19 to discuss the design process of the road between Knobcone and Macanta Boulevard.

Currently, this section of Crowfoot Valley Road is a two-lane, asphalt roadway with portions in the Castle Rock and Douglas County. Recent improvements have been completed at both ends of this roadway section. Now, this project is intended to widen the final portion of Crowfoot Valley Road as identified in the town’s Transportation Master Plan.

Earlier this year, the town received community input on future intersection traffic control options between Founders Parkway and

Sapphire Pointe Boulevard. Feedback on right-turn lanes will be incorporated with this project, while future signalization of intersections will occur separately when conditions warrant. The project team will be seeking feedback on the roadway cross section options at the open house.

This project is a collaborative effort between the town and Douglas County. Design is expected to be complete this year, with construction beginning in 2022.

Residents are encouraged to provide feedback during the design process. An open house will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, at Fire Station 155, 3833 Crowfoot Valley Road.

At the open house, residents can meet the project team from Douglas County and the town, view preliminary design options and share feedback.

County won’t ask to extend open space tax this year Two commissioners balk at taking question to ballot

After a disagreement among the county commissioners, Douglas County won’t ask voters this year to renew the Open Space Sales and Use tax — currently planned to sunset in January 2024.

Two of the commissioners, Lora Thomas and George Teal, said during an Aug. 2 work session that they didn’t want to pursue the ballot measure out of fear that it would fail. Both said they’d like to ask voters the question during the next possible election cycle, in 2023. Commissioner Abe Laydon voted in favor of taking the question to a vote this year.

“I think we’re gambing with the people’s land, their open space, their way of life by waiting until the last minute,” Laydon said.

The Open Space Sales and Use Tax, which funds acquisitions and maintenance of county open spaces, trails, parks and historic sites, is a tax of 0.17% and is included in the county’s 1% sales tax. In 2017, the fund was used to purchase Sandstone Ranch, a 2,038-acre property now available to the public for hiking, biking and -equestrians.

Teal and Thomas diverged on some of their reasons for disapproving the ballot item this year.

Teal focused on concerns about “anti-tax rhetoric” that he anticipates will be strong during the coming election season.

“It’s just adding up to me to be not the right time,” he said. “It’s going to be a tide of anti-tax fervor.”

During her comments, Thomas said she didn’t think it would be possible to pull an effective campaign together in time for the November election, adding that campaign signs would need to be out by mid-September.

“As much as I support open space ... I don’t have the energy to get this campaign going and get it on the ballot and get it across the finish line. It’s too late for me,” she said.

Thomas pointed to a 2019 ballot measure that narrowly passed as part of her reasoning. The ballot item, labeled 1A, asked voters to move a portion of the same 1% sales tax from the justice center to roads. It was approved with 52% of the vote.

“1A two years ago was miserable, it was awful,” Thomas said. “It was done at the last minute and I told myself after that I’m not doing another campaign like this.”

Laydon said he was ready to move forward with the open space campaign.

“This is very disappointing news,” Laydon said to the other commissioners.

In April, a professionally conducted survey of county voters showed that eight in 10 residents supported extending the tax.

About half of those supporters said they want to see it approved for an extra 15 years and the other half said they wanted it approved permanently.

“If (a 15-year extension) were put on the ballot it would pass overwhelmingly in my opinion,” the research consultant said at the time.

Brian O’Malley, the chair of the County Open Space Advisory Committee, said during the work session that he would prefer that the ballot question be asked this year.

He also spoke about how, without an extension approved this year, the open space program would be limited by its indefinite future budget.

“With regard to future acquisitions, what will be our position, say if we get another Sandstone opportunity in the next two years?” he asked.

Cheryl Matthews, the county’s director of open space, said the budget currently has about $9.5 million in it.

“That would not acquire anything like a Sandstone Ranch.

balance not knowing if the sales tax would pass in ’23.”

Another factor being considered by commissioners is that the Town of Castle Rock is likely to ask four tax-related ballot questions in November, including three outright tax increases and a 10-year pause on TABOR. The pause of the state’s Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights would mean residents would no longer get a tax refund under the bill.

The town is asking these questions because it needs about $13 million in new revenue to meet the needs of rapid growth there, said Town Manager David Corliss. Castle Rock approved the questions on first reading July 20 and will vote on the second reading Aug. 17.

Teal said that the tax questions from Castle Rock along with other possible questions about tax increases at the state level would sour the issue for voters.

“My concern is that our message is going to get conflated to what else is out there,” Teal said.

Laydon, whose seat is up for re-election in 2022, said he felt that in spite of these questions from Castle Rock, people would be supportive of the open space tax because it’s a continuation of a tax rather than a new one.

“I may not be here in ’23 and this was certainly a commitment and a promise I made to my citizens so I can’t tell you how disappointed I am,” he said.

A wild ride at the Douglas County fair

T

he Douglas County Fair and Rodeo has wrapped up after a weekend of bull riding, steer wrestling, barrel racing and a record-setting junior livestock sale.

The county’s 103rd annual fair and rodeo took place at the Douglas County Fairgrounds in Castle Rock.

The junior livestock sale, on Aug. 6, was a hybrid event with buyers participating in person and online.

4H member Job Knight had the grand champion steer, which was sold for $31,000 plus $1,400 in additional donations.

The sale included beef, swine, sheep, poultry, goats and rabbits.

“Each buy directly supports the exhibitors selling their livestock and promotes the future of agriculture through funding scholarships,” according to a press release about the sale.

Overall, the sale raised $650,000, a record-setting number for the event.

Attendees also had the chance to dance to the tunes of Colorado country artist Buckstein on Aug. 7 at an “ol’ fashion barn dance,” according to the release.

The Castle Rock National Night Out event was held on Aug. 3 at Philip S. Park. The Castle Rock Police Department created an event aimed at engaging participants.

The department created a trading card program where kids collected cards from all the police officers, including Chief Jack Cauley and the new K-9 officer, Buttercup. A contest was held to see who could collect the most cards leading up to the Aug. 3 event.

Kids were also educated on the steps to secure a crime scene with Detectives Dan DeGennaro and Mike Williams. The detectives worked with kids to find clues and mark areas that would be useful in an investigation. In one scenario, kids had to find clues that led to a suspect without a shoe or shirt.

Drinks and dinner were also served, as members of the Castle Rock Police Department served hamburgers and hot dogs to residents.

Among those attending the event were Kim and Clyde Hagan. The longtime Castle Rock residents said they always take advantage of National Night Out because it gives them an opportunity to get to know the community.

“This really lets us show our support for local police,” Kim said. “The way things are in the country right now it is very important to show

Youth and adults not only got to get inside police cars and fire trucks, but the county’s SWAT team was also on hand to show off equipment and vehicles used in high-risk situations.

Besides deputies and other personnel attending the celebration, Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock was also in attendance, saying it is important to put a face to local law enforcement.

Some say policies go too far; others say not far enough

School districts across metro Denver and beyond have been revising their mask-wearing policies and other rules to address the threat of COVID-19 as the new school year approaches.

And frequently, those policies have met with strong objections from many -- some feeling the rules go too far and some saying they don’t go far enough.

Some districts, such as Denver, Jeffco and Englewood, have announced mask-wearing requirements inside schools, while others, like DCSD, are strongly urging that they be used but not mandating them in school buildings.

Colorado’s public-health department released new K-12 school COVID-19 guidelines in late July, but the new guidance “does not constitute statewide requirements,” a state news release said. Instead, the guidance outlines “best practices” for local governments and school districts.

However, “all students and staff are strongly encouraged to wear a face mask in school,” a letter to the community from Superintendent Christopher Smith said on Aug. 4. All students and staff are required to wear masks on school buses regardless of vaccination status.

• Littleton Public Schools is planning to start the 2021-22 school year without a mask requirement. Schools will practice physical distancing as much as is possible without disrupting the learning environment.

• In Englewood Schools, the district announced Aug. 4 that the wearing of masks by all students, visitors and staff inside its schools will be required this fall, regardless of whether a person is vaccinated for COVID-19 or not.

• For the Adams County area: In Adams 12 Five Star Schools, masks are recommended for all students, regardless of vaccination status, but are not required. 27J Schools (Brighton area) will also not require students to wear masks indoors. But in Westminster Public Schools, all students, staff and teachers will be required to wear masks when indoors. Students in all three school districts are required to wear masks on buses.

All staff who are vaccinated will not be required to wear face masks at schools and district sites. All staff members who are unvaccinated will be required to wear masks in the workplace.

• In Douglas County Schools, masks will be “strongly encouraged” for students 11 and younger when learning indoors. The same is true for students 12 and older who are not fully vaccinated. Masks will not be required.

• Jeffco Public Schools will require in-school masking for ages 3 through 11. For students age 12 and above, masks indoors are strongly recommended for unvaccinated students and recommended for vaccinated students in alignment with guidance from Jefferson County Public Health, according to a news release.

• The Cherry Creek School District, which includes central and eastern Centennial, has

After the initial uproar at the town hall, Wise paused his presentation and stepped to the side of the stage, waiting for audience members to quiet.

Some people cried out, “Child abuse”; shouted, “It’s not going to happen” about masks; and called Wise a liar. One woman yelled above the crowd, “Let’s hear him out,” and the room calmed shortly after.

That’s when Wise said, “I going to be blunt, if you can’t handle the ‘how,’” — a reference to DCSD’s plans for containing COVID’s spread — “you need to take a look at your own self in the mirror.” The remark immediately prompted a furor throughout the room.

The Aug. 4 event took place in an auditorium at Rock Canyon High School in east Highlands Ranch.

Throughout the evening, Wise stopped his presentation repeatedly as people peppered him with comments and questions regarding COVID-19 mitigation strategies.

Some in the audience said COVID-19 data is faulty, lamented the mental health strains COVID placed on children and laughed when Wise said the district is listening to “medical experts” in its planning.

you can have it that way. I need your help. I need your help here,” Wise said.

At one point, Wise implored a man to let him finish the presentation and told attendees they could call him individually later. He tried to quell the group’s anger by clarifying that DCSD is recommending masks, not requiring them.

The superintendent started the town hall saying it was informational only. The presentation would not feature a Q&A portion and people could submit questions online afterwards, he said.

But Wise changed course amid pressure from the crowd and took a few questions in the last 10 minutes of the town hall.

The first person asked if DCSD would incorporate critical race theory in its social-emotional programming. The district is making socialemotional learning a focal point in 2021-22 because of traumas students are facing during the public health crisis, Wise said.

Wise did not directly respond and said people should focus questions on COVID-19 protocols. (In past communication materials, the district and Wise have repeatedly said DCSD does not teach critical race theory.)

Another question was directed to the Tri-County Health Department’s executive director John Douglas, who joined the meeting remotely.

Tri-County oversees public health services in Douglas, Adams and Arapahoe counties.

The speaker asked Douglas to go “on record” about the need for masks in preventing COVID-19 and disputed their effectiveness to cheers and applause. The man also asked Douglas to address his concerns that masks are harmful for young children.

Douglas said there is abundant information regarding the value of face coverings and that not all research is definitive. But he warned against the proliferation of misinformation regarding masks as well.

The narrative that masks trap bacteria and are unsafe for children “is a complete fabrication,” Douglas said.

That statement drew more boos from attendees, who also chided Douglas for saying the best source of information on current masking research is the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Masks do unequivocally benefit the wearer,” Douglas said.

Douglas spoke for several minutes about recent COVID-19 trends and DCSD’s approach for the new school year.

“I think it’s a well-done plan. It addresses the very few requirements that we have,” Douglas said.

Wise said wearing masks is required on school buses because of federal regulations. He said the district will issue letters when it learns of a positive COVID-19 case and ask close contacts to watch for symptoms, but will not require quarantine. Students and staff who test positive for COVID-19 will be required to isolate.

Douglas and Wise cautioned that the pandemic could force schools to change COVID-19 policies if spread worsens, particularly amid a surge of the highly transmissible Delta variant.

“We are in a fluid situation. We have been seeing case rates increase nationally, in the metro area, in Colorado and Douglas County. For example, in Douglas County case rates have gone up about 45% in the last week,” Douglas said.

Douglas said he does not foresee another general public mask mandate, especially in the next several weeks. People have been getting less sick thanks to vaccinations, he said, advocating for anyone who is unvaccinated to get inoculated.

Among Douglas County residents who are eligible for the vaccine, 73% have received at least one dose and 64% are fully vaccinated, according to information presented at the town hall.

Wise said the district will be holding more community forums.

Future roundtables will be a better place for the community to raise questions about COVID-19, he said.

David Gould, a district parent and Castle Rock resident, said he came to hear leadership address controversies around critical race theory and the use of masks in schools.

Gould called masks “a big issue” and dangerous for children’s mental and physical health. But he felt the district’s fall plan is reasonable, and said he was surprised by the audience’s response to Wise’s slide about masking this school year.

Recognition begins with appreciation

he business operates seven days a week in the summer months. Some days are busier than others, with customers waiting in line. Most wait patiently while others, well … not so much. InWINNING ventories can run low, and sometimes WORDS be out of stock.

The point-of-sale system is usually working properly, but sometimes it needs a little troubleshooting.

Not to mention the cleaning, maintenance, and routine Michael Norton chores that must be tended to daily that are required to keep the business running properly and ensuring amazing customer service.

Observing this team of overachievers, I was super impressed.

They worked well together, smiled while they worked, took a genuine interest in their customers, and created a wow experience for everyone they served. Many times, I saw them go above and beyond in the way of customer care. They worked in

harmony to get the job done. It was a sense of teamwork rarely displayed in even the best of corporate environments.

As in any business, shifts need to be changed and covered, illnesses happen, family vacations are planned, and unexpected events can disrupt even the tightest schedules.

The team came up with a system to make sure that all shifts would be covered, and although it came close a few times, they never found themselves short-staffed.

This was a well-coached staff and an extremely bright and motivated team that worked so hard to get the job done. Some were leaders, some grew into leaders, and watching them this season, I knew that some were future leaders. Not only in this business, but I could tell that these were individuals who would contribute to the success of any organization that would be lucky enough to hire them and who would be both emerging and transformational leaders wherever they would go.

Oh, by the way, I am referring to a staff of about 22 hard-working, loyal, and awesome young ladies ranging in age from 14 to 20. They are such an impressive team, truly

one of the most talented, smart, and fun staff I have had the privilege of witnessing in my many years in business. Kudos to each one of them and a big shout out to the woman behind these young ladies, Kim Norton. As the owner and Chief Ice Cream Mixologist of Norton’s Main Scoop, she puts so much effort into interviewing, hiring, training, and developing the team. And more importantly, she has a deep respect and appreciation for each person on the team. Even more than making some ridiculously delicious ice cream, the team’s growth, safety, and well-being are her top priorities.

Although the business operates seven days a week for the summer, Kim decided to completely close the shop for a day this year to throw a staff appreciation party. She closed so that everyone could attend. Each team member had opportunities to share stories, great memories, funny customer experiences, and further bond as a team. And they all received small gifts as a show of appreciation. And some received awards for Most Valuable Player, Rookie of the Year, and other such honors. It felt more like a family gathering instead of a company

event.

Some of the girls have been a part of the business for the past four seasons and will be leaving for college.

Their contributions will never be forgotten, their smiles will remain a part of the business forever, and their positive attitude will be their legacy for those who follow behind them.

Whether it’s a business on Main Street or a Fortune 500 company, recognizing our team members begins with appreciation. When the people on our teams feel appreciated and recognized for their contributions, there is a much greater chance that they will stay with us, grow with us, or if and when they do leave, they will leave our business in much better condition then when they first arrived.

I would like to acknowledge another act of kindness which occurred here in our Douglas County. This act was one of those unsolicited gestures that you should know about. The circumstances involved the deaths of two newborn children and the death of an adult. Each incident was unrelated to the other. These tragic deaths were not due to malice, but perhaps the result of neglect, ignorance, or mental illness. The next of kin could not be discovered in a case, and the circumstances remained so obscure the three abandoned souls seemed lost in the ethernet.

Rather than allow those tragic deaths go unacknowledged, several Douglas County residents took it upon themselves to provide Christian memorial services for the victims. Heflebower Funeral & Cremation Services donated cremation services. Seven Stones Botanical Gardens Cemetery donated final disposition. Three local pastors, Doug from Plum Creek Church, Mike from New Covenant Church, and Brian from Summit Church were kind enough to provide final

Seventeen years ago when we moved to Douglas County the schools were a big draw. With no school-age children since 2012, our family has not paid close attention to the schools. That was a huge mistake.

Bluffs Regional Park keeps gaining popularity County says park sees more traffic over time, with big bump during pandemic

Steve Shoultz, Douglas County’s assistant director of parks, trails and building grounds, watched in 2020 as people flocked to parks.

Parks and trails throughout the county saw a rise in traffic amid the COVID-19 pandemic, he said, as they offered safer areas to go and socialize.

And one of the more popular spots proved The Bluffs Regional Park, located adjacent to the City of Lone Tree and providing connections to Highlands Ranch trails.

Its proximity to the Denver metro area combined with sweeping views of the Front Range make it a popular recreational area in the county, Shoultz said, and one that’s been steadily increasing in usage before and during the pandemic.

Traffic counts at The Bluffs reached 168,785 in 2018, 169,644 in 2019, and jumped to 215,261 in 2020.

The annual traffic count in 2021 is projected to reach 172,953. When the county began recording traffic counts in 2014, annual traffic was 152,141.

“This year’s data is showing that we’re going to trend back down from that spike that we saw last year, but not by much,” Shoultz said.

Shoultz noted the county’s rank as second healthiest county in the nation, according to lists prepared

by U.S. News and World Report.

Many residents value fitness and the outdoors, he said, which Shoultz believes contributes to parks’ popularity each year.

With more use comes some obstacles. The county occasionally sees

visitors mistreat the parks, he said.

At The Bluffs, people make carvings in a rock monument along the trail. The county replaced plaques on its benches with iron plates that are “a little less defaceable,” Shoultz said. “Social trails” have also popped up, he said, or paths that form from people taking shortcuts off the official trail.

The county tries to prevent social trails through education and signage, which doesn’t always work.

“They will break them off and throw them off in the weeds,” he said.

Still, weather affects maintenance issues more than trail users co, Shoultz said. Staff try to manage the flow of water from rain, which can erode the park and especially one with steep grades like those at The Bluffs.

“The Bluffs is a specifically challenging site because what makes it great makes it hard to maintain,” he said.

Shoultz said it’s up to everyone to help keep parks beautiful so more people can enjoy them.

On Aug. 4, Wendy Loyd and Lasinda Crane trekked up a hill at The Bluffs to catch up after Loyd returned from a trip out of town.

Carol Anne Young

July 13, 1953 – July 29, 2021 Carol Anne Young was born in Richmond, Virginia on July 13, 1953, to Harold and Marion (Jones) Young, she passed from this life on July 29, 2021, of natural causes at the age of 68.

Carol spent the first 5 years of her life in Richmond and then the family sold their bookstore and moved to Denver, Colorado where her father worked as a CPA. They soon tired of city life and moved to the small community of Sedalia, Colorado when Carol was starting second grade. They spent their summers in a cabin up Jarre Canyon on the edge of Pike National Forest and after a couple years they made the cabin their year-round home.

Carol often spoke of what a wonderful place it was to grow up, riding horses with her friends, hiking, picking berries and sleeping in a tent up the hill from the cabin all summer. She loved being part of the Indian Creek Community and made many lasting friendships from her years there.

Carol was given an unbroken thoroughbred/quarter horse filly she named Rebel Miss and Miss became Carol’s project. She would come home from school, bridle Miss and ride bareback at a gallop into the back meadows before it got dark.

Trails at The Bluffs Regional Park are designed to accommodate a variety of users, from people to cyclists to horses.

Quality of public education is a primary driver for quality of life and economic development. Young educated families often consider that their number one consideration. Yet the DCSD has been miserably failing Douglas County’s children and citizens for the past decade.

And the blame lies squarely with

the “reformers” who experimented on the district’s children for several years. The current board, as your recent article points out (“District takes first steps in overhaul of educator pay,” July 22), is making yeoman efforts to address the pay issue and repair the damage inflicted by the reformers. But voters should keep that in mind when board elections roll around so that they are not sold the same old wine of the reformers in a shiny new bottle.

Crane nodded as Loyd reflected on the rise in traffic, but said she understands why the area is growing in use.

“It’s such a beautiful spot,” Crane said. “You see everywhere, 360.”

After graduating from Douglas County High School in 1971, she attended Colorado Mountain College in Leadville and then Western State College of Colorado in Gunnison.

She had various jobs including rural mail carrier over Night Hawk and up along the Platte River,

tutoring students and working as a clerk at The Denver department store before being named Director of the Castle Rock Senior Center. She enjoyed creating programs, overseeing the activities, and working with the senior citizens there for a number of years.

With both her parents now deceased she moved to Eastern Colorado to be closer to friends and she took a job as Head Librarian in Cheyenne Wells.

In the summer of 2001 while vacationing in Hamilton, Montana she fell in love with the Bitterroot Valley and moved there that fall.

Carol worked at Cardinal Properties in Hamilton from 2006 to 2019, before retiring. While working there she found great pleasure in helping the people who came in looking for places to live. She was always friendly and helpful. She considered herself very lucky that the people she worked with were also her good friends.

She enjoyed hiking the trails in the Bitterroot Valley the first few years she was there; she was the eternal student always taking classes and learning something new. She loved reading, working puzzles, playing video games and spending time with her friends.

Carol was always ready for a new adventure, she traveled to Colorado and Nebraska to see friends often.

She had a lifelong love of theater, she helped backstage and played in several productions at the Hamilton Playhouse. Carol also did some volunteer work with the Bitterroot Humane Society. She was an independent person, a loyal friend, always ready with a smile, and will be greatly missed.

Religious identities spread out along the Front Range

he Denver metro area is religiously diverse and it’s becoming increasingly so.

A new study by the Public Religion Research Institute — called the 2020 Census on American Religion — found that “religious diversity scores” for Adams, Arapahoe, Douglas and Jefferson counties in 2020 were all above average when compared to the rest of the U.S. The average religious diversity score by county in the country — on a scale of .02 to 0.9 — is 0.62. Meanwhile, Arapahoe County received a score of 0.81, Adams County was 0.79, Douglas County was 0.77, and Jefferson County was 0.78.

The array of religious identities in the Denver metro area — where one religious subset doesn’t represent more than half of the population — doesn’t surprise Carl Raschke, professor of religious studies at the University of Denver.

“Historically, Colorado has been a place for religious freedom and religious experimentation,” Raschke said. “Colorado is a lot harder place than other parts of the country to figure out or get an actual profile out of.”

In making sense of the new PRRI data, Raschke and other experts explained that some religious groups maintain large numbers and influence because they have been around for a while. However, the Denver metro area religious landscape continues to shift in noticeable ways because a lot of people migrate to the area, both from within and outside the U.S. Muslims, Hindus and ‘nones’ Averaging data for Arapahoe, Adams, Douglas and Jefferson counties, white evangelical Christians represent 16% of the population, 8% are Hispanic Catholic, 1% are Muslim, 2% are Jewish, and 31%

are religiously unaffiliated.

Across the U.S., the average for white evangelical Christians is 14%, 8% are Hispanic Catholic, 1% are Muslim, 1% are Jewish, and 23% are religiously unaffiliated. The county-level data is from a PRRI survey that collected hundreds of thousands of responses from adults across the country between 2013 to 2019.

Tracing similar data from previous years is difficult, given that the county-level data in the 2020 Census on American Religion is the first of its kind.

Anecdotally, Raschke said some of the fastest-growing religious affiliations in the metro area are Muslims, Hindus, and religiously unaffiliated, also called “nones.”

There are a few reasons for that.

First, Raschke said, “what’s happening in Denver is pretty much following religious and demographic trends nationwide.” What’s happening in the U.S., such as the dramatic rise of the nones, is happening here.

However, certain migration patterns also uniquely affect the Denver area’s religious makeup.

“As you migrate more people to a place, it changes. And it is influenced by those that are moving in and the size that is moving in,” said Elizabeth Garner, state demographer with the Colorado Department of Local Affairs.

One of those groups is young adults, representing a large percentage of the nones in the U.S. “Typically, when we migrate people to Colorado, and to Denver, we migrate young adults,” Garner said.

Then there are racial and ethnic minority groups coming to the Denver metro area from within the U.S. and outside. Both have a major impact on Colorado, Garner said.

In Colorado, “... migration has a larger influence than birth. Not every state is the same,” Garner said.

“In terms of religion, that’s what I would assume as well. Is that where

we migrate people from, and those trends will influence what happens in the state.”

New generation Muslims Imam ShemsAdeen Ben-Masaud, director of student affairs and community engagement at Crescent View Academy in Aurora, said those trends are especially pronounced in the Denver metro Muslim community.

Ben-Masaud, who was born and raised in Colorado, said his dad moved to Colorado in 1977 and at the time, there were only two mosques in the Denver area that people held inside their homes. Now, there are dozens of mosques in the metro area.

The Front Range’s Muslim community started with a small number of immigrants and refugees who primarily arrived from other countries, Ben-Masaud said. But now, the growth is a byproduct of several factors. Those early immigrants began having families and some middle-income Muslims moved from other states for work.

The continued influx of refugees from Muslim-majority countries also counts, he said.

From 2000 to 2010, 56% of foreignborn Coloradans were from Latin America, 21% were from Asia, and 11% were from Africa, according to U.S. Census Bureau data provided by the state demography office.

From 2010 onwards, 38% are from Latin America, 33% are from Asia, and 15% are from Africa.

Meanwhile, Garner noted, international migration only represents 20% of net migration in Colorado.

More mosques No matter the cause, Ben-Masaud, said Colorado’s new Muslim communities are growing.

“The idea is that now that firstgeneration American (Muslims) or second-generation American (Muslims) are connected to these

mosques, religious centers, faith centers,” Ben-Masaud said. “We can now continue the growth of the community and continue to serve the community and then maybe provide some of the services that our parents couldn’t.”

Ben-Masaud said that people born in and raised in larger hubs for local Muslims — such as central Aurora — are moving into quickly developing areas, such as south Aurora and Centennial.

“A lot of those families have been established. They might have lived closer to the mosque and the school here 30 years ago when they first came. Now they are established.

Now their kids have kids. Now they have income, and they are buying the houses out there,” the imam said. “Who is filling their space here, where they left behind? It’s the newer immigrants. So, the Somalis, the Africans, Kenyans, Afghans and Iraqis.”

In the coming years, Ben-Masaud said new mosques will likely be built in southeast Aurora and Centennial.

Ben-Masaud also noted that there’s a large Afghan Muslim population in Northglenn and Thornton, who are members of the Metro Denver North Islamic Center, or Masjid Ikhlas. Many of the people who attend the Islamic Center of Golden are students from the Persian Gulf region who are studying at Colorado School of Mines, Ben-Masaud said.

For Ben-Masaud, it’s been neat to observe the drastic growth of the metro area Islamic community over time. “We grew up thinking, ‘why are we here, why don’t we live in California?’ But now everybody is coming here and there’s now like, OK there’s attention on us, there are more people with experience coming in,” he said. “We’ve really become this geographic hub, that while isolated, it’s looking positive for the future.”

Local artist offers look inside Meow Wolf Denver

After years of anticipation, Meow Wolf’s permanent Denver location is set to open Sept. 17 under the name Convergence Station. The Santa Febased art collective has been secretive about what to expect from their four-story, immersive art exhibition, but Rocky Mountain PBS got a peek inside.

We caught up with Arapahoe County artist Scott Hildebrandt and his piece titled, “You Are Here.” e Hildebrandt — who lives in Littleton and works at an Englewood studio — is known for his work with antique and vintage miniatures, creating micro worlds inside of old clocks, cameras, radios, TVs and more. He had used this medium to make a huge work of art that fits

The artist mimics the idea of interdimensional time travel by creating stories inside of vintage electronics that he hopes will remind

people of their own past.

“It’s almost like a memory inside of a memory,” Hildebrandt says.

His piece uses more than 150 individual dioramas that all fit together into 20 shelves that span from the ceiling to the floor. Each diorama contains a story brought to life with individual lighting and sound effects that come from speakers built into the artwork.

Hildebrandt laughs, “You could spend a lot of time just looking at all the small details in each one.”

The collaboration between Hildebrandt and Meow Wolf Denver has been three years in the making. “I knew in my proposal that I wanted a hallway that would bridge two different worlds and interact with you as you walked through it,” he says.

Hildebrandt has always loved how his work evokes memories and

a childlike wonder from viewers.

“That’s what I love about my art, it gives you the ability, even as an adult, to pretend.”

People call the artist Mr. Christmas. It’s a name he got about 10 years ago when he first started doing this artwork.

Hildebrandt focused on vintage Christmas pieces. The first piece he made was a little Christmas village that was under glass. People took interest in that style of art and so he just sort of absorbed the name Mr. Christmas, he says.

North section of Parker Road to be widened Early timeline shows project complete in 2023

“If we can get more money coming to Parker to fix our roads for the benefit of citizens i think it’s a win.

The only downside is we have to spend our local dollars to leverage the other $3 million so we can improve Parker Road for our citizens,” he said.

Both intergovernmental agreements with Douglas County and the Colorado Department of Transportation were approved unanimously.

The section of Parker Road between E-470 and Lincoln Avenue is set to be widened after the Parker Town Council approved two funding contracts for the project during an Aug. 2 meeting.

“The primary goal of the project is to increase the number of travel lanes on Parker Road to increase vehicular mobility during peak hours,” said Alex Mestdagh, the town’s engineering services manager, during the meeting.

That includes widening of the area, beginning at Pine Lane, and repurposing of existing right-turn lanes to allow for through-traffic use, he said.

The project will also add a new multi-use sidewalk to the east side of Parker Road to connect the Baldwin Gulch Trail, near Ponderosa Drive, and the Pine Lane intersection, according to the project’s details.

Another existing sidewalk on the east side of Parker Road between Pine Lane and Crown Crest Boulevard will be widened.

An early timeline shows the project being completed in the spring of 2023.

goal of this is to increase the travel lanes on Parker Road, improve mobility, it looks like it’s going to really help relieve some of that heavy congestion, especially during rush hour,” said Councilmember Anne Barrington.

The $4 million project will be funded through multiple means including federal, state, county and town dollars. The Denver Regional Council of Governments, or DRCOG, selected the project for about $1.4 million of federal funding and $1.1 million of state dollars. The federal monies come from a national program available for local governments to help them address congestion and air quality issues.

Douglas County agreed to contribute $500,000 to the project and the Town of Parker will pay $1 million.

During his comments, Councilmember John Diak pointed out that even though the road is a state highway, it’s important for the town to help fund projects like this.

“The Town of Parker as well as public works and engineering constantly evaluate where the issues and needs are and … we try to define problem areas or potential future problem areas and try to resolve that for the best interest of our citizens,” he said.

He added that projects of this scale don’t often catch the attention of CDOT.

Other Parker Road work The southwest corner of the Parker Road and Mainstreet intersection is currently under construction as the town also works to improve traffic flow in that area.

“The current configuration at this intersection was constructed in the 1980s,” according to a news release from the town. “Due to continued growth in the area, it has resulted in increased traffic flows causing congestion during peak travel times.”

The intersection is anticipated to see more new development as a Chase Bank branch plans to move into the former gas station at the intersection.

These improvements will include an eastbound Mainstreet right-turn lane to enter southbound Parker Road and the widening of southbound Parker Road to the entrance of the Safeway shopping center, according to the release.

This project is expected to be completed in the fall.

Touch-A-Truck event set for Aug. 21 STAFF REPORT

The Castle Rock Police Department welcomes back the community-favorite Touch-A-Truck experience.

Now in its fifth year, the event kicks off Aug. 21 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds Event Center.

The engines will run from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., where kids will have an opportunity to sit in the driver’s seat and explore police cars, firetrucks, helicopters and more.

For visitors who prefer a more relaxed experience, participants are encouraged to attend a special “no horn” hour from 9 to 10 a.m.

“The community’s support of this event has been absolutely incredible,” said Traffic Officer Justin Smith, who has planned the event every year since its inception. “At our first Touch-A-Truck back in 2016, we had maybe 3,000 people attend throughout the day. Today, it has grown to nearly 8,000 visitors and dozens of participants.”

Not only will families have an opportunity to climb inside and take pictures of the various trucks, operators will be on hand to answer questions and teach people how they work.

“Our goal is for families to leave the event with a better understand-

Friendly transition brings new head coach Handke was defensive coordinator before moving up at Castle View

Eric Handke is taking over the head football coaching reins at Castle View High School in Castle Rock from his good friend Todd Casebier, saying he is not planning to make wholesale changes in the program.

Casebier left to take the head coaching job at Rifle, and Handke, the Sabercats’ defensive coordinator the past three seasons, moved up to the head coaching position.

“Our staff is pretty much all intact from what it was before,” said Handke, who had previous football coaching jobs at Montrose, Salida, Cal Lutheran and Adams State.

“The head coach left,” he continued. “He was a good friend of mine.

We coached on the Western Slope for about 10 years together. I was a head coach before and had to do the rebuild thing and I wasn’t interested in doing that again.

“The kids are excited. They don’t have to go learn a whole new thing.

So there is some comfort in that.”

Castle View has gone 19-11 the past three years and made the state playoffs twice. It might be too early to say, but the 2021 football season might be closer to normal than last year.

“That’s the thing our team is most looking forward to, is having a full season and getting back to a normal football season,” said Handke. “Our kids are real excited and working hard. All signs are looking good.

Last season was so crazy. It’s great there are no restrictions and we don’t have to separate guys.

“We graduated some really good players. We’re going to miss them but we’ve got a good senior class. I have some kids that really contributed last year who were juniors.

Defensively we have six guys back.

Offensively we have a little bit less than that but we’ve got some guys that are ready to step in.”

Castle View opens the season Aug. 27 against Heritage and has nonleague games set against Fairview, Douglas County and Aurora Hinkley.

“We not going to change a whole lot,” said Handke. “You are always looking to take the next step. That is kind of what we are looking to do. But also we’ve got to take it one day at a time and focus on that first game. It doesn’t matter because if you go drop that first game that puts

yourself behind the eight-ball. We have to take care of business week to week so come November we’ll be in a good spot.

“Our league (Douglas County 5A) is tough enough, so in the nonleague we have to make sure we’re sharp.”

Softball standout ready to speak out Heritage hitter plans to improve communications with her teammates

Darby Kramp has been a standout third baseman and hitter for the Heritage High School girls softball team for the past three seasons, but the senior hopes to talk a little more this fall.

“I would like to improve on the communications,” she said. “I feel I’ve just been really quiet on the field and a lot of time when players get the ball they don’t really know where they are going. Me being a corner I’m going to have to talk a lot more.”

Kramp was one of the leading hitters in the Continental League last season with a .571 batting average and four home runs. She has been a three-year starter prior to the start of her senior season and has a .486 career batting average.

Kramp had surgery to repair a torn meniscus at the end of October and spent months rehabbing the knee, which lasted during the start of summer club

softball campaign. She played for the first time for the Ruthless Gold 16U team.

She finished the summer club season with a .343 batting average and a .667 slugging percentage for a team that compiled a 77-33-1 record.

It took a while for Kramp

to be ready to play for the Ruthless Gold squad.

“For me it was really tough to come back because on my team everybody was fighting for their own position, so if you’re not performing or showing why you should be in that position then you have to try to show up at practice to protect your spot,” said Darby. `It was hard for me to do that since I was out of softball permanently for three or four months.

“I kinda started working back into things really slow, like taking ground balls with stationary movement or just sitting on a chair swinging a bat just to get something going. For the longest time, I wasn’t able to do a full swing because it was more of my body’s reaction of not letting me get my hips through on a swing. Then I started getting bad mechanics on my swing because I wasn’t able to do a full correct swing. So I had to go work a lot on the tees.”

Kramp will be ready when Heritage opens its season Aug. 12 at Columbine.

“I feel confident now,” she said. “It’s (the knee) pretty close to being fully healed.”

Kramp’s summer team fared much better than Heri-

tage. Over the past three seasons, the Eagles have gone 21-40.

“At Heritage it’s my senior year and it’s one of those things that if a win comes, it comes and we’re going to have fun winning the game,” Kramp said. “It’s more important to have fun in high school. I love all the girls I play with and I’m happy I get to continue to play with them for this last year.”

Kramp also has time to do a little coaching.

“When Darby isn’t playing or working on her game, she coaches with me,” said Schulthies. “My daughter and Aubrey Kramp (Darby’s sister) play on the same 10U team.”

Darby enjoys the teaching part of the sport.

“I really like helping the younger girls and I think it’s fun for them too,” she said.

“I just try to make it a fun practice, more laid-back, more of a learning experience. During the games, if they make a play or don’t make a play when they come out I say, ‘OK when you got that ground ball, do you think you should have thrown it right away or do another thing?’ I want them to understand the game a little more.”

Homelessness a big issue for metro mayors Englewood’s Olson participates in Denver Metro Chamber forum

Englewood Mayor Linda Olson joined the mayors of Denver and Wheat Ridge at the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce’s State of the City forum to discuss issues facing the region — and homelessness was at the forefront.

The Aug. 3 event at the Denver Botanic Gardens was attended by hundreds of metro-area business professionals.

Denver Mayor Michael Hancock delivered the keynote address after Olson and Wheat Ridge Mayor Bud Starker participated in a panel discussion with Kelly Brough, the chamber’s president and CEO. All three mayors pointed to housing affordability and homelessness as ongoing challenges they face.

In a question to Olson and Starker, Brough mentioned that many metroarea communities have not dealt with homelessness to the degree that Denver has, and asked the two mayors to speak on possible opportunities for regional cooperation to address the issue.

Olson said she was proud that nearly all members of the Metro Mayors Caucus — which represents mayors from 38 cities and towns across metro Denver — have pledged to end homelessness among veterans first.

The “veteran population is the first population that you can get to a functional ground zero, where it’s rare and infrequent that people are homeless,” Olson said. “Once you can do one area, you can flex your muscles and learn some things (and) move on to the next population.”

Starker, the Wheat Ridge mayor, replying to Brough, said, “You need to go out and outreach (because) no one effort is the magic goal. Every community is different. All those needs will be different. And we need to have a variety of choices and options (to provide) outreach to these populations.”

Starker brought up Jefferson County’s homeless navigator program, which was launched in 2020.

This program aims to help connect people experiencing homelessness with services and solutions to the complex health and housing issues they may be facing.

According to the Wheat Ridge city website, the program is “comprised of six municipal and county-based housing navigators who work directly with persons experiencing homelessness or at imminent risk of homelessness.”

Addressing homelessness was also a topic of Hancock’s keynote address, as well as economic recovery.

“People predicted that Denver would be one of the first cities to roar in terms of our economy,” Hancock said. “Signs of recovery are all around us. We have survived time of loss, hardship and change, but it is not over yet.”

Lakewood Cultural Center announces 2021-22 season Jazz, funk, classical — even comedy.

The center is bringing what they describe as “an exciting mix of music and theater” to Lakewood beginning in September.

The new season picks up where the LCC Presents series left off, with performances that had to be postponed due to the pandemic.

LCC administrator Rita Sommers said she was overjoyed to welcome audiences back to the theater in September.

“The Lakewood Cultural Center is all about people — what we create and what we experience together,” she said. “We are so grateful for the loyal support of our patrons over the past year and eager to see old friends and make new acquaintances.”

The LCC Presents 2021-2022 season “The Drowsy Chaperone” co-presented with Performance Now Theatre Company 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays; 2 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays; Sept. 10-26 When a die-hard musical theater fan puts on a recording of his favorite Jazz Age musical comedy, an extravagant fantasy unfolds in his

“I thought it was kind of an overreaction,” he said. “(The slide) says recommended; it doesn’t say mandated. If it said mandated, I think that would have been justified, but I think a lot of people jumped to that conclusion.”

Avery Myhra, a sophomore at Castle View High School, said she came to the town hall looking for assurances 2021-22 will bring back normalcy to education. She believes masks should remain a personal choice and hopes the district will stick with in-person learning.

“It was a lot of ‘what ifs,’ kind of.

Like, well we’ll see where the data

goes. So that was a little hard because, you know, it’s ever changing,” she said.

The 15-year-old said frustrations with the pandemic pent up over the summer, and she understands parents are distressed making decision about their children’s education. Looking ahead, Avery hopes future community forums remain civil.

“I would just like to see more respect towards each other,” she said. “No matter what you decide or where you stand, just to see respect toward other people and their choices. Because I feel like there’s just been a lot of anger and frustration, and to remember at the end of the day we’re all part of one community and it’s important that we work together.”

A request for genetic tests shall not prejudice the requesting party in matters concerning allocation of parental responsibilities pursuant to §14-10124(1.5), C.R.S. If genetic tests are not obtained prior to a legal establishment of paternity and submitted into evidence prior to the entry of the final decree of dissolution or legal separation, the genetic tests may not be allowed into evidence at a later date.

Automatic Temporary Injunction – By Order of Colorado Law, You and Your Spouse are: 1. Restrained from transferring, encumbering, concealing or in any way disposing of, without the consent of the other party or an Order of the Court, any marital property, except in the usual course of business or for the necessities of life. Each party is required to notify the other party of any proposed extraordinary expenditures and to account to the Court for all extraordinary expenditures made after the injunction is in effect; 2. Enjoined from molesting or disturbing the peace of the other party; 3. Restrained from removing the minor children of the parties, if any, from the State without the consent of the other party or an Order of the Court; and 4. Restrained without at least 14 days advance notification and the written consent of the other party or an Order of the Court, from canceling, modifying, terminating, or allowing to lapse for

Thriving at 99 Exercise class and a special party treat mark birthday

At 99, Yvette Gunther is not slowing down. Instead, she is driving herself to a daily senior fitness class, enjoying life and planning for a 100th birthday celebration at Highlands Ranch Mansion next year.

Gunther celebrated her 99th birthday at the Northridge Recreation Center in Highlands Ranch recently, joking about the good times, reminiscing about the past, and enjoying the attention from about 30 friends.

Besides traditional food and desserts, Gunther was also treated to her first Jell-O shot during the celebration.

In describing their friend, many agreed that the one word that properly describes Gunther is “inspirational.”

Linda Wilson said she has known Gunther for several years, commenting on how she has missed more fitness classes than her 99-year-old friend.

“She’s active, energetic and always inspirational,” Wilson said. “I mean, who doesn’t want to get up every day and head to a fitness class at 99?

Right?”

Senior fitness instructor Allyson Holgard said it has been an honor working with Gunther over the years.

“She inspires others by just continuing to show up,” Holgard said.

“Her smile, her energy and her ability to never give up inspires everyone. Not even COVID could slow this woman down.”

Kathy Martz, friends with Gunther for more than two decades, said her friend has been a part of boards and organizations to help keep Highlands Ranch on track. Martz said Gunther has never shied away from giving back to the community.

“She is an absolute pistol,” Martz said. “She is a true example of what you can do at any age.”

about a senior fitness class or serving on various boards. Martz said it is about being there for each other, noting that she has been there for Gunther in losing two husbands.

As friends gushed over how inspirational Gunther is, the 99-year-old said it all goes back to her childhood when her parents placed her in a boarding school. When the school

let students outside to play, Gunther said she took full advantage of any athletic programs she could do, taking in as much sunlight as she could.

Gunther said she would never wish boarding school on anyone and has always vowed to be social, friendly and active in her life.

“I do not like sitting around,” she

said. “Even after I lost my husbands, I get out and see my friends, walk my dog and get into all kinds of spoils. It is my friends who have kept me going.”

Gunther said she continues to stay active with exercise class and various community activities because she hates being alone, and her friendships are too important to stay inside.

Looking forward to 100, Gunther said she is going to rent Highlands Ranch Mansion. She said she plans to invite everyone she knows to celebrate the milestone.
