SEE CENTER

“Because the center has reached this signifi cant milestone, more than 1,100 local residents are able to enjoy friendships, opportunities to stay active, and chances to share their time and talents with the community, touching lives throughout the Castle Rock area.”

In providing a history of the senior center, Gray said the senior center opened in 1971 at its fi rst home in what is now Castle Rock Music downtown on Wilcox Street. Over the next 20 years, the senior center was moved to a new building several times before settling in its current location, 2323 Woodlands Blvd., in 1997.

Pam Ridler, president of the Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce, presented the senior center with a Non-Profi t of the Year Award during the July 9 celebration.

“Not many nonprofi t organizations can state they have stayed relevant to their community for 50-plus years,” Ridler said. “The Castle Rock Senior Activity Center should be proud that they have continued to give value to their members by offering programming and activities to keep seniors connected in our community and give show relevance. “

In a statement for the ‘50-year Commemorative Book,’ senior center Executive Director Debbi Haynie and President Phyllis Tumey said the board of directors has worked diligently to set the program up to be successful for another 50 years.

“It’s our mission to make life more fulfi lling and create community for seniors as they come here to engage in a wide variety of programming and services designed for ‘Loving Life in the Second Half,’” said Haynie and Tumey. “We think we can speak on behalf of the entire Castle Rock Senior Activity Center Board of Directors and staff when we say thank you for celebrating with us and for being a part of this awesome organization.”

Last month, Tumey spoke highly of the senior center board being proactive in addressing the current trends and needs of the town’s senior citizens. When pickleball became more popular among seniors, Tumey said they were able to advocate for getting more courts built. Now, courts are available, and more are being built at Cobblestone Park.
