A proposal from Democratic state lawmakers to address “implicit” or unintentional racial bias in how people are excluded from Colorado jury service is stalled after facing unanimous opposition from the state’s district attorneys.

Proponents of Senate Bill 128 argue it would address what they say is a longstanding problem of people of color being disqualified from serving on juries on racial pretext, using reasons like a person’s distrust of law enforcement or English fluency. They say the current legal standard makes it too easy for attorneys to dismiss a juror

as long as they don’t show purposeful discrimination.

“Minority jurors have continued to be excluded from service on juries because judges accept race-neutral reasons, such as a jurist’s hairstyle, language, body language, skepticism about whether police treat people fairly … and other explanations,” Sen. Pete Lee, a Colorado Springs Democrat and prime sponsor of the legislation, said at a hearing.

But the bill will need to overcome opposition from all 22 of the state’s district attorneys, who wield a lot of power at the Capitol, to advance.

Jewel Dean (White) Miller

September 15, 1932 - February 22, 2022

Jewel Dean White was born September 15, 1932, near Belle Arthur, North Carolina. Jewel was the fourth of five children born to Eugene McKinnon and Verna White. The family relocated to Dighton, Massachusetts when she was a toddler. Upon graduation from Dighton High School, she worked for a short time before marrying Charles Jamieson in March 1952. At that time the couple relocated to Fort Smith, Arkansas, for Charlie’s military service at Fort Chaffee.

The couple raised four children. When Charlie transferred to the United States Air Force, the family was assigned to Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, South Carolina.

During his year-long deployment to Vietnam, the family relocated to New England to bunk with aunts, uncles and grandmothers.

Subsequent postings were back to Sumter, to Langley AFB in Virginia, and finally Lowry AFB in Denver.

Jewel was an accomplished seamstress, and in addition to clothing her family, she also made bedspreads, curtains, slipcovers and braided rugs. She was a volunteer par excellence, and was quick to say “yes” to help her community through literacy coaching, food banks, and physical labor. An active member of United Methodist Women, she received several awards over her lifetime for making a difference in the mission and work of the church. As her children progressed through school and scouting programs, she was a Den Mother for the Cubs, camped with the Girl Scouts, organized Pinewood Derby feasts, and helped a lot of kids earn their merit badges. A lifelong Methodist, she loved to sing, participating in many choirs, and had a servant’s heart.

In addition to sewing, Jewel enjoyed being creative. She knitted, quilted, crocheted, needle-pointed and cross-stitched; she created beautiful oil and porcelain paintings, and took guitar and organ lessons. In her mid 40’s, she completed a new challenge and went to school to be a dental assistant. She found the work rewarding, and when the last dentist she worked for retired, she began volunteering at the Brighton hospital. That turned into the job from which she retired.

Perry Miller and Jewel married in April 1977 and began a new adventure together. Perry’s certification as a private pilot allowed the two of them to visit different parts of the country, often joining friends for cross-country and local jaunts. Before she was 50, Jewel had soloed in a private plane.

The couple was well-known in the Van Aire neighborhood in Brighton, which they called home for over 40 years. The Miller’s home was the site of many years of happy holiday and family get-togethers with the evergrowing family, which included the spouses and children and an assortment of friends.

In their retirement years, Jewel and Perry enjoyed their families and each other, but with aging needed additional help. After successfully recuperating from a stroke, Jewel was treated for cancer with tremendous support from her church, PEO sisters, and neighbors. Following Perry’s death in 2017, Jewel made her home in Arapahoe County during the final years of her life.

Her family is grateful for Jewel’s influence on their lives. She was kind and generous, a woman who loved well and fought fair.

She provided a moral compass and focus for life that has benefitted those whose lives she touched.

She is survived by her children, Gary Jamieson (Margo); Diane Boehringer; Cindy Jamieson, David Jamieson (Deborah Weeks-Jamieson), and Nancy Miller (Michael Biglen). Grandchildren include Lindsey Jamieson (Shane Hamilton), Logan Daly (Mallory Baskin), Royce Weeks-Jamieson (Sarah Bolin), Spencer Weeks-Jamieson, Case Densmore (d. 2000), Mark Densmore (Dawn), and Dean Densmore (Angela Gattuso).

A memorial service will be conducted later this year, and Jewel’s ashes will be interred at Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln, Nebraska. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Brighton United Methodist Church, 625 South 8th Avenue, in Brighton, Colorado 80601.

Eugene Benjamin Hagans

January 10, 1929 - February 20, 2022

Eugene B. Hagans passed away at 93, on Sunday, February 20, 2022. He joined his beloved wife, Alta, in heaven who passed away in 1994. Gene was born in Lander, WY on January 10, 1929, to Verne and Grace Hagans. His father worked in the oil fields. Gene was the youngest of three siblings, Bessie (Hagans) Dowdy and Elwin Hagans. At age 10 the Hagans family moved back to the Fort Lupton area to run the family farm northeast of town.

Gene met the love of his life, Alta, on a blind date, in 1954. The couple wed in June of 1955. They produced three children, Neena, Gary and Laurie. Gene was active in the Mountain Empire Dairy Association, the Fort Lupton Lions Club and the Fort Lupton United Methodist Church. He and his brother Elwin bought the family dairy farm from their parents and continued on with it until selling out in the 1980’s. Gene went on to work at The House of Smoke in Fort Lupton. His final career choice was to drive a fuel truck for Don Imhof, in Fort Lupton, delivering fuel to farmers and oil rigs.

Gene enjoyed fishing, camping and going to church. He has four grandchildren: April (Hagans) Burns of Evanston, WY, Levi Hagans of Loveland, CO, Jacob McCartney of Evans, CO and Kelsey McCartney of Kersey, CO. He also has one great granddaughter, Hailey. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Verne and Grace (Peckham) Hagans; sister, Bessie (Hagans) Dowdy of Thermopolis, WY; brother, Elwin Hagans of Fort Lupton; and his beloved wife, Alta (Douglas) Hagans. He is survived by his daughters, Neena Hagans of Fort Lupton and Laurie (Bill) McCartney of Kersey; son, Gary (Pam) Hagans of Hudson; four grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

Services will be at the Fort Lupton United Methodist Church, 306 Park Ave, in Fort Lupton, CO 80621, on Saturday, March 19, 2022 at 10am. A reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Gene’s name to the church.

Elizabeth Leona Stephenson June 8, 1930 - January 25, 2022

Elizabeth “Betty” Leona Stephenson 91 passed away on January 25, 2022, at her home in Brighton, Colorado.

Betty was born on June 8, 1930, at the family farm near Lafayette, Center Point, IA. She was the daughter of Spencer and Clista (Schmickle) Stephenson.

Betty attended the country school near her home and graduated from Alburnett High School. She was active in sports and 4-H.

Betty attended Iowa State University graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics. She was absent from graduation as she was on a ship going to England and Wales through the International Farm Youth Exchange Program. This was the beginning of yearly reunions that took her to places around the world making many friends. She would never miss the time spent with the IFYE organization and her friends.

After graduating she taught at Williamsburg, IA then to Colorado at Lakewood Area and Gunnison. Betty then moved to Brighton, CO where she taught High School Home Economics for 32 years.

She pursued more education at University of Colorado where she got a master’s degree in Education, Psychology and Counseling.

Through the years she served on many committees in her church, college and IFYE programs. After retiring from teaching Betty worked with senior citizen programs. She won many awards for her accomplishments.

Betty took great pride in her yard, the

church flower beds and especially her roses. Her yearly trips to Iowa included working on the landscape of her farm.

She enjoyed time with her family and meeting her many nieces and nephews. Betty enjoyed golfing and it was special to golf with family.

Betty was an outstanding person and made many new friends throughout the years. Her plan was to move back to Iowa, but God had another plan. Her family and friends mourn her passing but know she is in a better place.

Betty’s farewell words to us would have been “I go in Peace and Love One Another”.

Betty is survived by a sister, Lois Martin of Marion, IA two brothers, Howard (Donna) Lea of Woodburne, OR Harold (Donna Mae) of Center Point, IA and ninety-six nieces and nephews.

Betty was preceded in death by parents, a brother Wayne and wife Kay of Georgia a brother-in-law Loyd Martin of Marion, IA & nephew Chase Martin of Springville, IA. The body was cremated per her wishes.

Services were at the 1st Presbyterian Church in Brighton, CO on Saturday, February 26, 2022 and a later date will be set in Lafayette, IA where she will be buried.

Colorado lawmakers introduce bill declaring Juneteenth a state holiday

Colorado lawmakers have kickstarted the process of making Juneteenth an official state holiday, joining the federal government and many businesses that already observe it.

On March 2, members of the Black Democratic Legislative Caucus gathered with supporters outside the state Capitol to promote SB22-139. The bill would add Juneteenth to the calendar of state holidays starting this year.

“I think Juneteenth is largely seen as an African American thing, but it should be seen as something for the general population,” said Sen. Janet Buckner, one of the bill’s sponsors. “It should be something to be educated about and never forgotten.”

The holiday commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas and freed the country’s last remaining enslaved people more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth has been recognized by many Black communities, including Den-

ver’s, for decades.

President Joe Biden designated it as the 11th federal holiday in 2021, making it the first addition to the federal list since Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983. State holidays specifically impact the operations of government offices and public schools.

Colorado’s effort to officially recognize Juneteenth stems from negotiations with the state workers’ union, which signed its first contract last November.

The union, Colorado Workers for Innovative and New Solutions Local 1876 (WINS), negotiated the addition of the paid holiday as a part of their 3-year deal, which also includes a new $15 minimum wage and paid family leave.

Supporters say the recognition of Juneteenth is also a symbolic nod toward improving diversity and equity in state government.

Juneteenth is now a paid holiday for Aurora city employees During the March 2 press conference, Skip Miller, president of WINS, said that he never celebrated the holiday while growing up. It wasn’t until he moved to Colorado in the 80’s that he

started attending annual Juneteenth celebrations in Denver’s Five Points neighborhood.

“This is something that we have all fought for,” Miller said.

“We’re gonna ensure that all people who call this state home can celebrate such a critical holiday.”

The bill still needs to make its way through both chambers and receive the governor’s signature before it becomes official. Gov. Jared Polis said Wednesday that he supported the change.

“By adopting Juneteenth as a state holiday, we’re paying tribute to the millions of Black Americans who endured indescribable suffering under the horrors of slavery,” Polis said. “But just as important, we elevate the celebration because at its heart, this is a joyous holiday.”

If successful, the addition of Juneteenth would be Colorado’s second change to its list of official holidays in recent years.

The state replaced Columbus Day with Frances Xavier Cabrini Day in 2020.

PVHS, police investigating ‘large fight’ STAFF REPORT

Prairie View High School administrators, Brighton police and school security officers are investigating what’s been called “a large fight” that happened during lunch period on March 2 in the nearby Orchard Church parking lot.

Principal Michael Burke outlined the events in a Facebook post. He said during the fight, more than 100 students were in the area and that several students were involved in several altercations. Two other, separate fights took place inside the school.

Burke said staff and officers did not see any weapons. But in response, administrators installed a “no-pass” period to keep students in their thirdperiod classes.

“We are still investigating all aspects of the events that occurred, and there have been and continue to be consequences for students who were involved in the disruptions from these fights,” the Facebook post said.

“This is not who we are at PVHS. We are better than this.”

Burke wrote that he expects better of his students.

“Our students model and live our core values,” he wrote.

“Our students challenge themselves to take rigorous classes and persevere even in the midst of a global pandemic. Our students push themselves to be the best that they can perform on the athletic field and on the stage. Our students leave our school as good humans and make a positive impact on the world.”

Burke said the school will not put up with students “...who come to our school and disrupt our learning environment in such a way that completely disregulates our staff and students.” He added students “... will be held to expectations that they are more than capable of maintaining.”

He also asked for conversations between parents and students “...so we can restore the balance to the learning environment at PVHS immediately.”

“I find it interesting that this bill as drafted only applies to criminal trials, and the one common denominator that exists in every criminal trial is a law enforcement officer,” Weld County District Attorney Michael Rourke, a Republican, said. “The inability to exercise a peremptory challenge against one who expresses distrust for law enforcement will virtually ensure that at least one member of our jury will be voting for acquittal.”

Denver Democratic Sen. Julie Gonzales, the bill’s other prime sponsor in the Senate, said she and Lee postponed a vote on the bill to consider changes and find “a path forward.”

The current version of the measure would remove a requirement that a judge find “purposeful discrimination” in order to determine a juror was improperly removed because of their race. It would no longer allow attorneys in criminal cases to dismiss a juror by citing reasons like a distrust of law enforcement, living in public housing, having a child outside of marriage, receiving state benefits or speaking English as a second language. Instead, an attorney would have to offer another reason to disqualify the person from serving.

The bill represents the second attempt to enact such a policy after the Colorado Supreme Court declined to hear a similar proposal, modeled after a reform in Washington state, last year.

Ann Roan, a criminal defense attorney and retired public defender who helped draft the bill, said prosecutors’ arguments against the bill are an oversimplification.

qualify potential jurors of color, she said.

Roan said a distrust of police alone shouldn’t be grounds to get rid of a potential juror. Attorneys on both sides are still able to ask follow-up questions that would show whether a juror’s point of view would improperly prejudice their ability to judge the facts of the case.

“This bill has been misleadingly characterized as anti-law enforcement,” Roan said. “And I think that’s a pretty significant and deliberate misread of the historical fact that people of color have been excluded from jury service in this country for over 100 years.”

How are juries picked?

When selecting jurors, lawyers on both sides of a case can try to dismiss a person from serving based on either a challenge for cause — such as lacking in qualifications, or showing a bias that would prevent them from deciding the case impartially — or by using what’s called a peremptory challenge.

Peremptory challenges don’t require a reason, and defense attorneys and prosecutors each get a certain number of them. If an attorney wants to dispute a peremptory challenge by arguing a juror was removed for discriminatory reasons, the court would apply a test under a 1986 U.S. Supreme Court decision called Batson vs. Kentucky.

To overcome a Batson challenge, the striking party must offer a “race-neutral” justification for dismissing the juror, and a judge then must determine whether striking the juror showed purposeful discrimination.

Critics say the “purposeful discrimination” requirement means Batson is easy to get around, and challenges are rarely successful. The measure would eliminate the requirement that a judge find deliberate discrimination and instead determine whether an “objective observer” could view the race or ethnicity as “a factor” in the peremptory challenge.

Joyce Akhahenda, chair of the Sam Cary Bar Association, a group for African American attorneys in Colorado, said the current standard can put judges in an awkward position.

“People immediately go on the defensive, and the issue becomes about whether the attorney being challenged is a racist as opposed to the reasons why they made the challenge,” Akhahenda said.

At the Judiciary Committee hearing, prosecutors questioned whether the issue could be addressed with more training.

They also pointed to a nonpartisan fiscal analysis that put the cost of the bill at $1.3 million a year, although proponents also dispute that estimate.

Robert Russel, head of the appellate division at the Denver District Attorney’s Office and a former appellate court judge, said he would consider supporting an amended bill where race would need to be a “significant factor” in a juror’s dismissal to uphold a challenge, rather than simply “a factor.” Russel opposed a similar proposal when it came before a judicial committee last year.

“I think it’s far from clear that (the bill) will increase the participation of people of color on juries,” Russel said at the hearing.

Nationwide attempts at reform The bill comes after Washington and California passed similar laws to address unintentional or “implicit” bias in how juries are picked.

Advocates that implemented those laws in Washington and California have pointed to a 2010 study of southern states and appellate cases in California that showed widespread use of peremptory challenges to dismiss Black jurors.

It’s difficult to assess how widespread the problem is in Colorado as there doesn’t appear to be data available on the demographics of juries and how peremptory challenges are exercised. Court decisions on Batson

issues are also rare, although there are some recent examples.

Last month, the Colorado Supreme Court overturned a man’s conviction after determining a judge mishandled a Batson challenge. The judge erred by offering his own reasoning for why excusing a Hispanic juror from a case with a Hispanic defendant was justified, despite a comment by the prosecutor directly referencing the juror’s race, Colorado Politics reported.

That spurred defense attorneys in Colorado to bring a similar policy before a panel of judges and attorneys, known as the Rules of Criminal Procedure Committee. Last year, the committee voted 7-5 to recommend a similar proposal to the Colorado Supreme Court for adoption. The court declined to hear the proposal, but said it would consider a similar policy in the future if the committee could reach “greater consensus.”

Tom Raynes, executive director of the Colorado District Attorneys’ Council, said prosecutors would prefer the rules committee handle the issue or that sponsors delay the bill a year, when more data will be available on how the changes have impacted courts in Washington and California.

Goan, the criminal defense attorney, believes it will be “very difficult” for the proposal to move forward given the united opposition from district attorneys.

Akhahenda, meanwhile, believes the issue is too urgent to be left up to training programs.

“We should want to have a representative community that encompasses everyone’s lived experiences and not just a select few,” Akhahenda said.

Fixing the oil industry With war in Ukraine threatening to make oil prices rise, the candidates agreed we need to do what we can to resurrect domestic oil. They agreed that the Keystone Pipeline needs to be built, new oil and gas policies must be repealed and drilling should be permitted on federal land.

Kirkmeyer says we need to overturn the president’s executive orders that stopped leasing federal lands.

“Forty percent of our properties are on federal land needs to be opened up and leased,” said Kirkmeyer. “The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) kills oil and gas in water quality and air quality regulations. Like Congress, we need to pass laws to rein in the EPA. Also, take away this state privacy on EPA, so they can’t pass the air quality and water quality regulations,” she said.

Kulmann said she has more than 23 years of experience in the oil and gas industry as an engineer, and 15-years of her career has been in Weld County.

“I’ve seen firsthand the policies in Colorado and across the country what has been done to my industry. I am the director of Law Construction in charge of drilling fracking, engineering facilities and construction for my company.

Before Biden became president, the oil and gas production in Colorado was released out of the strategic reserve after one year of production, “ said Kulmann.

“We are missing out on a huge opportunity here,” she said. “Colorado has the resources; the oil and gas industry has the technology better than anyone else in the world. So we can show the rest of the world how to do it right, how to be efficient and how to be environmentally friendly.”

Allcorn’s father was an oil and gas worker and met officials with the oil and gas industry.

“I asked them, is it necessary for us to be successful to unleash the oil and gas industry? They told me- get out of the way! We need the government to get out of the way of what they are trying to accomplish,” said Allcorn.

“We need the government to stop preventing us from being able to access the oil and gas dollars we have here in this country. We should be energy independent as a net exporter of liquid natural gas. The green energy that the President and Nancy Pelosi are talking about is not right. We cannot replace the energy that the oil and gas industry provides.”

Gray says ninety percent of Colorado oil and gas comes from Weld County, and 4% comes from Adams County. We need to get the federal lands permitted.

“I’m not an expert in the oil and gas industry but I’ve learned every day by touring sites and drilling sites. We can start on the congressional level, and put pressure on the state level with our governor to not block those.”

Inflation Allcorn says the out-of-control spending of the Democrats is what’s causing

inflation because they are giving too much money for free to individuals and causes that are not necessary.

“The cost of our ability to do business in this country has gotten too high,” said Allcorn. “The types of policies that Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden are trying to pass is causing this. We must get inflationary needless spending under control. We need to open up our own gas industry to drive down prices that are affecting people at the gas pump in the grocery stores and every aspect of their lives. It’s incredibly important to get our spending under control.”

Gray said we can’t just print money out of thin air, and Congress must stick to a balanced budget.

“The last time the federal budget was balanced was 2001 when Clinton was president and that’s over 20 years,” she said. “We must reverse the effect of spending, starting with oil and gas, Keystone Pipeline and open federal land- being energy independent.”

Kirkmeyer we should not have a revenue problem in this country.

“We need to balance the budget, zero out the debt and cut taxes,” Kirkmeyer said. “We need to get Americans back to work and stop paying Americans not for not going to work. The COVID lockdown put us into the situation where we don’t want people working, so we cut off our supply chain,” she said.

“So we’ve got to get Americans back to work; we have to stop paying Americans to not go to work. If we continue to raise the debt ceiling, there has to be an appropriate cut on the other side of the ledger before you start trying to raise the debt ceiling. It’s why we are in this situation- they can’t control themselves.”

Kirkmeyer added, “The build-back deal is $5 trillion more debt and we were at $30 trillion. Again, put it in the perspective of $90,000 of debt for every man, woman and child in the United States. They have to stop the deficit spending.”

It’s impacting our pocketbooks every day at the pump, and the grocery store, Kulmann said.

“As a mom, my job is to make sure my kids have food and are healthy. At the grocery store, you are spending another $100 on the same groceries we bought a year ago and also at the gas pump.”

“As an engineer, I have a 30% inflation increase on the pipe in oil and gas from my drilling rig. This is something that’s happened over the last year and a half. After the shutdown, the government started putting more regulations and increased the spending,” Kulmann added.

“The quickest way to fix it is to open up the supply chain, make sure that we can get the goods we need here. How many times have you gone to the grocery store, you can’t find bread or the milk because shelves are empty?”

Helping police Candidates said there must be an effort to help our police officers, not the people they arrest.

“What been occurring the last two years on a national level is this whole movement to defund the police. We need to defend our police on the federal level,” Kirkmeyer said.

It’s been a demoralizing situation, especially in Colorado, with Senate Bill 217, she said. We need to fund for additional training to recruit and retain them.

Kulmann says her job was to fund the Thornton police department fully.

This project consists of installing approximately 4,300 linear feet of 8-inch water line, replacing and transferring approximately 60 water service lines, installing new fire hydrants, and associated asphalt and concrete removal and replacement.

Construction adjacent to Monaco Elementary School on Monaco Street between E. 76th Avenue and E. 77th Avenue, shall not begin until after May 23, 2022, the last day of school for students. The work in this same area shall also be completed by July 29th, 2022, just prior to the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year.

All Bids must be in accordance with the Contract Documents on file with the owner, South Adams County Water and Sanitation District, 6595 East 70th Avenue, Commerce City, Colorado 80022; and at the office of Muller Engineering Company, Inc., 777 South Wadsworth Boulevard, Suite 4-100, Lakewood, Colorado 80226.

Electronic files of the Bidding Documents for use in preparing Bids may be obtained from Muller Engineering Company. Bid Documents will be available on Friday, March 11, 2022, at no charge. BRIGHTON – Eagle Ridge Academy’s historical season on the basketball court continues as the Warriors sealed their trip to the Great 8 March 5.

The No. 8-seeded Warriors rolled past No. 9 Highland Huskies 84-66 to advance to the Class 3A state basketball quarterfinals for the first time in school history.

The Warriors now have the tough task of knocking off top-seeded St.

Eagle Ridge (21-3) has proven that it isn’t an easy opponent either with a long and athletic group of players that is extremely skilled. The Warriors’ size and athleticism were a problem for the Huskies, who shot 26 percent from the field. The top five scorers for the Warriors are all 6-foot-2 and taller, and all have

Peyton Torres showcased his game against Highland, scoring a game-high 33 points. He only missed one shot in the contest and dished out eight assists.

The junior guard was locked in early, scoring 14 points in the opening quarter to give the Warriors a six-point advantage after the first quarter.

James Kyren Allen hit a pullup jumper for Eagle Ridge in the second quarter and was a monster on the glass in the quarter as ERA pushed its lead to 17. Allen had a game-high nine rebounds.

Brothers Cameron and Christian Seifert, listed at 6-foot-4 and 6-foot-7, respectively, also were dominating presence in the paint. The duo combined for 13 rebounds and eight blocks in the contest. Cameron Seifert also had 20 points.

Highland implemented a full-court press in the third quarter and was able to cut the lead to 65-53, but the Warriors figured it out thanks to Hunter Hill’s ability to get down the court. The junior scored eight of his 14 points in the quarter to help Eagle Ridge take a 69-55 lead into the fourth.

The Warriors took advantage of a tired Huskies squad in the fourth as Cameron and Christian Seifert each beat the press for easy baskets to seal the victory.

It was a much different game than the March 4 contest against Platte Valley. Hill hit a pullup jumper with 3.4 seconds left to give Eagle Ridge the 51-50 victory, which was too close for Powell and his team’s liking.

“Not sure if it was nerves, but we didn’t come ready to play,” Powell said.

“The guys responded (Saturday) and that is what we needed.”

Sam Howery, who is arguably the best player in the state. Howery is third in scoring with 26.5 points a game and second in assists (9.2). He also is grabbing 8.6 rebounds a game and 3.4 steals.

“St. Mary’s has been really good for a while, so we have to come out and play our game,” Powell said. “Hopefully our height will help us out. But we will have to execute defensively and hold them to only one shot.”

The 3A title game will be played Saturday, March 12.
