Site development expert Jeannette Goldsmith told a crowd of local officials and business owners that she gets the sense that Adams County is trying to figure itself out, based on two days of tours and visits to local businesses and projects.

As a state commission moves closer to redrawing Colorado’s congressional districts, residents of Adams and Jefferson counties made their voices heard on how they want to be represented in Washington at a July 13 public meeting at Red Rocks Community College’s Arvada campus.

An ongoing tour across the Centennial State to gauge community feedback to its preliminary map brought the Colorado Independent Redistricting Commission to Arvada, where many voiced their concerns about the proposed redistricting.

After gaining more than 750,000 new residents in the last decade, Colorado was awarded an Eighth Congressional District in April — the state’s first new district in 20 years. The proposed boundaries for the 8th Congressional District would include parts of Arvada, Broomfield, Brighton, Fort Lupton, Thornton, Westminster, Firestone and Platteville, among other communities.

from the proposed district and the surrounding areas expressed concern over how the congressional district would split county lines, which some commenters said would hinder their community’s ability to vote together on issues of shared interest.

Arvada Mayor Marc Williams spoke first, voicing his desire to keep Jefferson County cities in the same congressional district.

“Arvada’s community of interest lies primarily with Golden, Wheat Ridge, Lakewood, Edgewater and Westminster,” said Williams, “in other words, the Jefferson County cities. These are all Jeffco cities who will be getting a letter from the Jeffco mayors indicating a very unified voice that we think that we should all be in one congressional district.

“And that’s because we work well together,” Williams continued.

“We’ve worked together on the homelessness issue; we’ve done a great Navigator program that we’ve put together in Jefferson County to address that issue. We’re working on attainable housing. We also have common transportation issues… that commonality of interest is not something I want to lose.”

Under the preliminary map proposal, Arvada would break from current CD7 and Jefferson County counterparts Lakewood, Wheat Ridge, Golden and Edgewater, among others.

Adjusting to business side key for college success College means big focus on scholarships and money, especially for athletes

For many, the switch from high school to college means an introduction into the world of checking accounts.

But for high-school athletes making the switch to college sports, there’s a business side that must be considered, too.

In general, college athletics are big business, especially if the sport of choice is football. College football pays for a good percentage of a school’s athletic budget, though postseason appearances — regardless of sport — don’t hurt that bottom line either.

The result for new college athletes is a system foreign to newly minted, independent youngsters. NCAA Division I and II athletes can receive scholarships for tuition, books and fees. But NCAA rules prohibit “payfor-play” arrangements.

The debate on that score will continue for years. But, for now, it also leaves athletes in the position of being unpaid revenue-makers of universities with the same respon-

Last week, the former high-school athletes talked about their adjustments to life as college athletes. This week, the topic is the business and academic side of college sports.

Business is in the eye of the beholder Frederick High School alum Davis Richard’s thoughts about business ties to college athletics were succinct.

“It is definitely more like a business than high school. But at the end of the day, it’s still basketball,” said Richard, who played at Central Wyoming Community College.

To fellow Frederick High School graduate Blake Duran, now playing football at Dakota State University in Madison, South Dakota, college sports felt like a business.

To a point.

“It can feel like a job sometimes, but the fun that comes along overcomes that for me,” he said. “It’s a lot to handle, being in college and especially as a student-athlete. You definitely need some time management.”

ing a shower and doing homework.

“It can definitely be exhausting at points. You don’t really have any down time during the week,” he said.

Brighton High School graduate Ivan Scarpino, who wound up playing football at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota, said his school did “a good job” of guiding athletes through coronavirus and all its effects.

“Based on high school to college athletics college seems to be more of a business experience than high school, but only when talking about scholarships,” she said. “Other than that, everything is the same. You’re still playing the game, going to school and meeting new people.”

“There are some business aspects.

But as an athlete, I don’t feel that,” she said. “The coaches do a really good job of keeping us as athletes focused on running while they take care of the more business stuff.”

For Fort Lupton’s Antonio Marquez, who’s running track and cross country at Western State University in Gunnison, college athletics didn’t feel like a business at all.

“The other runners around me think the same as me,” he said. “They love working hard, chilling and, most importantly, winning. Without them, then it would feel a little like a business, but I do get some of the best opportunities. such as running in one of the most beautiful places in the world, working out with some of the best talent and I get the opportunity to do something special with running.”

Willing to work?

BHS alum Isaiah Madril, who went to the University of Dubuque in Dubuque, Iowa, to play football, said college athletics felt like more of a business to him.

“If you aren’t willing to work and be dedicated to your craft, then college isn’t for you,” he said. “More than half of my days are taken up by football, whether it is the weekends or weekdays.”

“College football is completely a business until you sign with a school,” said Frederick High School grad Lucas Dunker. He transferred to be a place-kicker at Washington

State University. “Once you sign, you have a whole community of people welcoming you in with open arms.”

Wrestler Jacob Duran, who moved from Fort Lupton High School to the University of Northern Colorado, left no doubt at all that wrestling is a full-time job.

“In wrestling season, if you have a job and completing both studies and athletics at the same time, that shows dedication for what you really want in life,” he said. “Because fitting all three would definitely be a struggle but still completely possible.”

Prairie View alum Kyle Melvin, who went on to play college baseball at Providence Christian College in Pasadena, California, said parts of the experience feel like a job in terms of time and effort spent.

“But with it being something I love to do and it being another way I can glorify God, it is a job I’m always wanting to do,” he said.

BHS grad Nate Griffeth, whose football season at Luther College in Iowa was wiped out by coronavirus, said college athletics felt like a business.

“It takes a lot to build a successful team, and in order to do that, we are constantly in meetings talking about game plans and watching film, always trying to improve,” Griffeth said.

“Everything we do either in lifting and practice has a specific purpose to make us better and be prepared for whoever we’re playing that week.”

Study assistance Duran’s team takes in study tables twice a week for two hours a night.

“This definitely helps because it gives us a chance to do homework with no distractions to ensure that we get our work done,” he said. “We also

have a team academic coordinator who knows as soon as we miss class or an assignment, so it’s nice knowing someone can help if you slack off.”

Scarpino has something similar at his school.

“My team has weekly meetings where we share our goals and exactly how we are going to accomplish them,” he said. “Position coaches always check in on players about grades, and the college has a lot of resources for help too.”

Haug said academic help is available any time.

“If an athlete is struggling in a class, our coach and our teammates are always willing to help get us back on track as well as our professors,” she said.

Griffeth said his team has weekly meetings with position coaches to talk about the coming week in academics.

“And we have a calendar that we put all the upcoming assignments we have so we don’t fall behind,” Griffeth said. “And at the beginning of the semester, we set academic goals such as GPA. Marquez said his team does the most it can to help him academically.

That includes mandatory study hall twice a week.

“The other runners, coaches, and aid care about the team having good grades,” Marquez said. “Coaches will check your grades often and will definitely talk to you about your grades.

My teammates have a meeting where we talk about our goal as a team. One of the most used statements is having good grades.”

The team goal is a grade-point average of 3.2. Marquez thought the GPA

“So definitely having the influence around me works,” he said. “Also having that extra aid helps so much, to have a tutor at every study hall, and you can call or text them if you really need help.”

Melvin’s team set a standard of reaching a 3.0 or higher grade-point average.

“And we really push each other to reach it,” Melvin said. “Our coach makes sure to move our practices around our classes so we don’t miss them.”

“My coaches have been able to help us to keep on our studies to be eligible and able to play,” Richard said.

Those on Read’s team with low grades wind up in mandatory study hall.

“It is different than high school because the coaches expect you to take care of your stuff as well as the professors,” she said. “But there are still grade checks and expectations.

They just aren’t talked about like in high school.”

Dunker meets with his football academic adviser at least twice a week.

He also has access to open tutors “whenever I need it.”

Madril’s school provides a twoday-a-week study hall for all college athletes.

“We have free tutors waiting to help,” he said. “In college, there should be no way you should fail because there are so many resources.”

Jacob Duran’s academic requirements include a mandatory six hours of study hall. One-third of that involves the whole team; the rest is up to the individual team members.

“If not, the team will get it,” Duran laughed.

Szatan said he thinks the need for offices will stabilize as the need for both centralized office workers and remote workers builds. He cautioned patience, saying we don’t know exactly how that will work out.

“This has been going on for 20 years ago,” he said. ”COVID has accelerated a movement out of Tier 1 markets to Tier 2 cities and even to Tier 3 markets, smaller university towns and smaller state capitals that are amenity-rich but don’t have some of the big city problems. That will help them attract and retain talent.”

2021 Adams County Fair Guide

The Adams County Fair is almost as old as the county itself

he first official Adams County Fair was held in October 1904, but the fair and rodeo predate the formation of the county.

The fair dates back to 1888, when monthly Market Days were held at the fairgrounds on the south edge of Brighton, which is the presentday site of the City of Brighton Government Center at 450 South 4th Avenue.

The monthly Market Day for farm produce and livestock was organized by Brighton founder Daniel F. Carmichael and other Brighton boosters. The site was a racetrack called Driving Park, where horse races and plowing races took place and cattle and horses were auctioned. The fairgrounds also were the site of July 4th celebrations for several years.

The Platte Valley Farmers Association launched a fall fair in Brighton in 1892. The scope of this project was larger than ever before and embraced several counties. Buildings were erected at Driving Park to house exhibits.

A 120’ x 32’ grandstand that could seat 500 people was built next to the racetrack with a fine arts hall underneath. A tent eight feet in diameter was constructed to shelter displays of agricultural products. Stalls for horses, sheds for cattle, and pens for hogs were built to the south of the racetrack.

A long list of premiums and awards were donated by local businessmen, including the Fulton Ditch Company, Arapahoe County (which then included the area), and various Denver business firms. On October 5, 1892, the day the fair was to begin, Brighton was hit by a terrible rain storm and the fair was postponed. Fortunately, the storm

struck before the exhibits arrived, and the only real damage at the fairgrounds was to the tent, which was flattened by the high winds.

The fair was finally held October 18-20.

Tomato Day - Battle of Brighton

After the voters of Adams County chose Brighton as the permanent county seat, the fairgrounds were turned over to the newly formed Adams County Fair and Rodeo Association. The first Adams County Fair and Rodeo was held during the first week of October 1904. Opening day was known as Tomato Day and was the day with the best attendance. A noon barbecue was followed by a tomato contest called the Battle of Brighton.

Two teams of eight contestants dressed in white represented

the Democratic and Republican opponents for county offices. The two teams lined up and faced each other in front of the grandstand.

Each team member was given a box of ripe tomatoes, and on command they disposed of the fruit as quickly as possible by throwing it at the opposing team and occasionally the spectators.

The next year the popular event was held between teams from Brighton and Fort Lupton.

Other events were wild-bronco riding, half-mile foot races, bicycle and motorcycle races, a mule race, horse races of various sorts, and a baby contest. Over the years famous or soon-to-befamous performers participated

in the rodeo, including African American cowboy Nat “Dead Wood” Dick Love, who once worked as a horse trainer at the Driving Park in Brighton.

Growing fair

In 1964, the Adams County Board of County Commissioners decided to move the fair to the former site of the Denver Poor Farm near Henderson, where new facilities were constructed.

The 4-H building was the only structure saved and moved to the new Adams County Regional Park.

2021 Adams County Fair Queen, Mandy McCormick Mandy McCormick is the 21-year-old daughter of Monte and Jeanette McCormick of Bennett. She is a graduate of Bennett High School where she was involved in Future Farmers of America on the executive committee and held the offices of reporter and historian. Mandy was a 5-year member of

the Dry Creek 4-H club where she showed horses and is an active member of High Plains Trail Riders Horse show club.

Mandy is a partner in her family-owned business and farming operations. Her future plans include earning her degree in agriculture production management as the fifth generation to be part of agriculture. In her spare time, she can be found raising her bottle calves, showing her horse, and spending time with her family.

2021 Adams County Fair Lady-in-Waiting, Kira Szulinski

Kira Szulinski, is the 21-year-old daughter of Milt and Laura Szulinski. She is currently attending Metropolitan State University, majoring in biology. She hopes to become a Physician’s Assistant. Kira has one younger sister who currently attends Horizon High School, the same high school she graduated from in 2018. Kira has been riding horses since she was eight and has participated in 4-H since the age of 12. She also played

softball at a national level from the age of 8 through 17. Kira has been training her horse Ember since she bought the mare as a 6-month-old foal. They began their show career over the past two summers and recently competed at the Colorado State Fair where they took 6th place overall in the level 2 division.

The fair holds many wonderful adventures and memories for her. She is delighted to promote the fair and activities it holds.

She hopes you will open the doors and join her and Mandy in the adventures August 4-8.

Does the fair have a lost and found?

Lost and Found is located in the Parks Administrative Offices at the main entrance of the Regional Park Complex. Anyone looking for lost articles should check at this location during the fair from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or call 303.327.9430.

Is there reserved seating at the Grandstand?

No. All seating in the United Power Grandstand Arena is general admission.

Do you allow pets at the fair?

The only animals allowed on the grounds are service animals, animals on exhibit or those used in entertainment. We do not have accommodations for pets at the fairgrounds.

Where can I go for additional fair Information?

Information booths are located in the Exhibit Hall and several booths on the Midway.

Adams County introduced a single-stream recycling program throughout county facilities which has increased the amount of waste diverted from the landfill by 17% since 2011.

Plastic bottles, plastic cups, aluminum, cans, paper, and glass can all be recycled while attending the fair.
