Centennial leaders host community event in District 1

Centennial residents, city officials and Littleton Public Schools leaders covered a breadth of issues during a District 1 meeting, including changes to local leadership, pedestrian safety and challenges facing the school district.

Held Nov. 28 at the recently opened Centennial YMCA Center of Generations, the meeting was hosted by Centennial District 1 Councilmembers Candace Moon and Robyn Carnes.

Residents raise concerns

Two parents of students attending Gudy Gaskill Elementary, a Littleton Public School located in Centennial, raised concerns about the intersection of East Arapahoe Road and South Franklin Street, saying it is a dangerous road that families have

to cross when walking or biking to school.

One of the parents said she wants to reiterate how unsafe the intersection is, asking the city for any updates on upcoming changes to increase safety.

Anna Bunce, a Centennial traffic engineer, said the city plans to update the intersection.

A challenge is that the intersection has overhead power lines adjacent to it that would constrain the city’s opportunities to do things like make sure the new traffic signal has lighting, she said.

To address that, the city is working with Xcel Energy to move the overhead lines underground in advance of reconstructing the intersection, she said.

“We will be advancing the design in 2024,” Bunce said. “It is continuing to move forward.”

fic signal design include changing out some of the left turn and right turn displays, she said.

“The flashing yellow arrow displays, which everyone has seen for 15 years now for left turns, we are anticipating phasing those in for right turns as well,” she said.

Another potential change is that if somebody pushes the button to cross the road, the traffic signal will hold a red arrow across that movement for the duration of the pedestrian-crossing interval, she said.

A benefit of that method is that it will not restrict a car’s turning movement unless a pedestrian is actually present and crossing the road.

“That is going to be one of our biggest safety implications moving forward,” she said. “We’re hoping that … also will teach drivers over time that if you’re seeing that red arrow, it’s for a reason. It’s for a safety reason.”

Some residents asked what can be done in the short term as they wait for changes to be made at the intersection.

One person pointed out that a Littleton Public Schools student recently died after being hit by a car while biking to school, saying they don’t want to see that happen again.

Superintendent Todd Lambert said the school district works with different municipalities and pointed out that the Littleton City Council held a study session to discuss bicycle and pedestrian safety.

“Please know, we have that same sense of urgency,” Lambert said. “We have some plans to be out before the winter break, even, to do some evaluations. And then, we’ll start, in earnest, making changes that we think need to be made.”

Leaders address staffing, enrollment challenges

As part of the district meeting, Lambert, joined by Board of Education President Angela Christensen and Vice President Andrew Graham, gave a presentation on what is happening in the school district and current challenges it faces — such as staffing.

“We have shortages for positions in all areas,” Lambert said.

For example, special education teachers and bus drivers are highly needed, he said.

“It’s a challenge. We compete with industry. We compete with others,” he said. “We’re trying to do the very best we can to cultivate and grow our talent.”

A priority for the board of education is to stay competitive with compensation, Christensen said.

“Last year, we were able to raise teacher pay. It’s still not great, but it’s an improvement,” she said.

Another issue facing the school district is its enrollment numbers.

Lambert said the school district’s total enrollment is currently 13,296 students.

“Our enrollment continues to have a slow decline,” Lambert said. “That presents some challenges for us.”

Lambert said there are a lot of ways to go about dealing with sporadic enrollment patterns.

“Please know that we are not satisfied with that. We believe that we can turn that down,” he said. “This year has been the slowest decline we’ve had in the last three years, and that’s a really good indicator for us.”

Williams takes oath despite student, community concerns Two people were sworn in as newly elected Englewood school board members on Dec. 5. One was Katie Wilberding Cross, a social worker and school volunteer, and the other was Davon Williams — a twice-convicted felon who is facing a pending car-theft accusation from 2019.

Williams, who ran unopposed for a four-year term on the school board, has an appearance on bond set for 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 6 in Adams County Court Division 6 in Brighton.

During the meeting Williams was made secretary of the board, Wilberding Cross was made president, Julie Hoag was made first vice president, Duane Tucker was made second vice president and Steve Leflar was made treasurer.

Community members expressed concern regarding Williams in the leadup to the Nov. 7 election after the Englewood Herald reported that he had an active arrest warrant in the ongoing court case, two felony convictions and a litigious history, including suing the city.

The Glendale Police Department confirmed that Williams turned himself in to their agency on Nov. 6 for the outstanding warrant.

Williams declined to comment at both the Dec. 5 board meeting and a Dec. 4 city council meeting.

“We want to ensure a transparent, legal and thorough vetting process for not only our district but the rest of the school districts through the state of Colorado.”

Marquis interviewed Williams for the Pirate TV podcast, “Walk the Plank,” in early October, before the Englewood Herald reported on Williams’ criminal history.

“My first impression of Davon Williams was overwhelmingly positive,” Marquis said in an email interview with the Herald.“I felt he was passionate about the ideals of diversity, equity and inclusion for all within the district, as well as he had some great answers to our questions during the podcast.”

The 18-year-old said he was shocked when the Englewood Herald initially reported on Williams’ background.

“I felt uneasy as he had been present on a TEC (The Englewood Campus) middle school and high school campus with a felony arrest warrant,” Marquis said. “However, my uneasiness quickly turned to curiosity, which led me to research the current laws in place as well as the Englewood Schools Board of Education’s policies on what makes an eligible candidate.”

she admires Marquis for addressing the board.

“As he said, we need to balance the safety of our students with our First Amendment rights,” Froelich said.

“Currently the law states in C.R.S. 2231-129: ‘A school director office shall be deemed to be vacant upon the occurrence of any one of the following events prior to the expiration of the term of office:... (e) if the person who was duly elected or appointed is found guilty of a felony.’ So perhaps this matter will be resolved in the ensuing months if a felony conviction occurs.”

Additionally, Froelich said she will address the matter with Englewood residents.

“I’ll continue to listen to our community and to look into increasing

the requirements to run for school board,” Froelich said. “At a minimum we could update the disclosure forms that people fill out. I believe voters deserve both information and choices.”

Marquis said he admires Williams for facing his active arrest warrant and going to the Glendale police.

“I think Williams did a good job turning himself in, opting to address his current pending situation and not continuing to run and leave the voters completely in the dark,” Marquis said.

The high school student said he is worried about Williams’ participation on the board.

Zillow Predicts More Homes for Sale and Improved Affordability Next Year

Zillow’s prediction for the housing market in 2024 rings true for me, as an active real estate broker. Early expectations that mortgage interest rates would fall back below 5% kept some would-be buyers from pulling the trigger, but now it’s beginning to sink in that interest rates will stay high, probably in the 7% range.

Home prices are also moderating a little, so buyers who can tolerate higher interest rates are coming off the fence, just as sellers are noticing that homes are selling well in the current environment, albeit for slightly less than they might have received last year.

Meanwhile, would-be home sellers who locked in 3% or lower interest rates on their current home have been described as “rate locked,” unwilling to give up their low mortgage rate and move up (or down) to another home with a higher interest rate. But Zillow feels that a growing number of such would-be sellers have grown weary of waiting for rates to drop and are ready to bite that bullet.

Another option not mentioned by Zillow in their article is that of selling and moving into a rental, especially if they are seniors who will have a big capital gain (after taxes) that will outlive them, or if they want to keep their options open for

buying in the future or moving to another city, state or country.

Another strategy suggested by Zillow is to hold onto one’s current home as an investment property, generating more than enough rental income to pay for a rental elsewhere. The article assumes that you’ll maintain your current low interest rate on your home, although that rate was for owner-occupied property, not an investment property. If your home has a reverse mortgage, you must pay it off if you move out, which likely means you’d have to sell your home, not put it on the rental market.

Here’s their prediction of the national market for next year: “Zillow’s latest forecast calls for home values to hold steady in 2024, falling 0.2%. Predicting how mortgage rates will move is a nearly impossible task, but recent inflation news gives the impression that rates are likely to hold fairly steady as well in the coming months. Taken together, the cost of buying a home looks to be on track to level off next year, with the possibility of costs falling if mortgage rates do.”

Meanwhile, as we approach the holidays, look at the market statistics in this chart of last week’s MLS activity on REcolorado within 18 miles of downtown Denver. It’s no surprise to me that the biggest number is that of price reductions, yet we are still seeing a healthy number of new listings, listings that went under contract and listings that closed last week. In other words, this is a market that is not stagnating. It is just waiting for more right-priced listings to satisfy pent-up demand by buyers, not all of whom are off the fence — yet.

I’m often asked whether winter is a good time to sell a home. Well, I just listed a $1.5 million home in Golden, and in the first 24 hours of it being “coming soon” on the MLS, over 10 agents with buyers set a showing for it. It drew multiple offers — the first one before showings began — and sold above it’s asking price

in 4 days. I have another listing going on the market in mid-January, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets the same reception.

It’s all about knowing the right price in that listing’s neighborhood. These two listings just happen to be in highly desirable subdivisions and in excellent condition. A listing elsewhere might get fewer showings and end up becoming one of the “price reduced” statistics.

Winter, I’ve found, is a great time to list a home because there are still lots of buyers getting automated email alerts of new listings, and there are fewer listings competing for their attention.

The amount of new construction in the Denver metro area, especially of apartment buildings, has been dazzling. All year, for example, I’ve been following the construction of a 340-unit apartment building across from my 2-bed-room rental at Solana Lakewood, and last week Rita and I moved into a 3-bedroom rental in GW Apartments, a brand new building on South Golden Road. A block away on the other side of South Golden Road, there’s a yellow rezoning sign stating that a 353unit mixed-use project is planned on what is currently vacant land.

Yes, new single-family homes are still being built, but they are far outnumbered by rental apartment buildings, and it’s not slowing down.

About a decade ago, the construction of condos stalled because of a surge in construction defect litigation by lawyers representing condo associations the way personal injury lawyers operate. Legislation was eventually passed to reduce the incidence of such lawsuits, but it didn’t bring

back the construction of condos as many observers had expected.

Developers accelerated the building of rental units as condo development stalled, and it just kept accelerating after that construction defect issue was mitigated. The completion of the FasTracks’ light rail and commuter rail project created a boom in TOD — transit-oriented development, almost entirely rental apartment buildings — within blocks of virtually every light rail and commuter rail station.

Now, with the cost of mortgage lending so much higher — more than doubled in the past 20 months — the boom in apartment construction and demand remains unabated. Meanwhile, we’re seeing a slowdown in single-family construction, with the emphasis on higher-density multi-unit construction.

There is also a new emphasis on local governments allowing single-family lots to add ADUs — accessory dwelling units — which is further increasing housing density across the metro area.

Denver Beer Company opens in Littleton

With its yellow and blue, mountains-and-hops-themed logo hovering above Main Street, Denver Beer Company is one of downtown Littleton’s newest arrivals.

The taproom and beer garden officially opened its doors to the public on Dec. 5 after months of renovating the space, which used to be Jackass Hill Brewery.

With three taprooms in Denver and one in Arvada, owners Charlie Berger and Patrick Crawford said they were excited to add Littleton to its list.

“Downtown Littleton’s … got such a good sense of place, and everyone that we’ve met and worked with — from the city to the employees and people walking by — are all so friendly and nice,” Crawford said.

“I’m really excited to open the doors and have a beer with the neighbors.”

Brews and bites

The new spot offers a beer garden with communal tables, fire pits and a turf area for kids to play. An indooroutdoor bar adds a unique space for patrons to sit during any season, with the outdoor areas heated.

In addition to a list of Denver Beer Company classics – such as the Gra-

ham Cracker Porter and a raspberry kolch called Princess Yum Yum — Littleton’s menu boasts several brews unique to the location.

“We have some amazing smallbatch beers that we’re gonna tap here, and here only,” Berger said.

“Right now, we have a delicious lager we make called Littleton Lager.”

Other Littleton-only beers include the Cranberry Kettle Sour, Krampus Juice and Main & Prince, Crawford said.

The menu also offers several food options, including fries, wings, flatbreads, burgers, tacos and more.

Williams makes court appearance after taking oath Davon Williams also sees his lawsuit against city dismissed by judge

New Englewood School Board member Davon Williams made an appearance on bond in an Adams County Court felony case on Dec. 6, just one day after he was officially sworn in on the school board and his civil suit against the city was dismissed.

Chris Hopper, director of communications for 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, said Willliams had private counsel represent him at the court session and a disposition

hearing was set for Dec. 27 at 8:30 a.m.

Williams was in court over a pending car-theft accusation from 2019, which had led to a 2020 arrest warrant that Williams didn’t address for more than three years until Englewood police began looking for him last month. The Glendale Police Department confirmed that Williams turned himself in to their agency on Nov. 6 for the outstanding warrant.

In other news, a lawsuit that Williams and Gary Kozacek filed against the City of Englewood was dismissed by a judge on Dec. 5, although they can appeal the dismissal until Jan. 23. The lawsuit aimed to reverse the city’s rezoning of the former Sam’s Automotive lot at Oxford Avenue and Navajo Street, where a developer plans to build an apartment complex.

Mike Chavez, majority owner of Sam’s Automotive, told the Englewood Herald in a phone interview Dec. 6 that the dismissal is “great news.” The lawsuit has held up his planned sale of the property to the developer, Embrey Partners.

In an email to the Herald on Dec. 6, Williams said they “are discussing status conference dates with opposing counsel.”

“The action is still ongoing with opposing counsel emailing me last night.,” Williams said.

transition back to their home school.

“It’s our hope that we can help create awareness so that more people want to get involved and support this idea, and so that, ultimately, we have more of these types of academies throughout the state and … throughout the nation,” said Ken Tuchman, who founded the Tuchman Family Foundation with his wife, Debra.

Tuchman — who is also the founder and CEO of TTEC, a customer experience technology and services company — said the school district brought Traverse Academy to his and his wife’s attention, and they toured the facility roughly six months ago while it was under construction.

“We were just blown away,” he said.

The Tuchman Family Foundation asked staff at Traverse Academy what materials they needed.

“We know how tight all these budgets are,” Tuchman said. “Anything that we can do to help these teachers so that these kids are more successful is really what matters to us.”

Courtney Throndson, an art teacher at Traverse Academy, said staff carefully selected the items for the bags to set students up for success.

Some of the items in the bags are fidget tools, which can help students work out any restlessness or anxiety they feel, she said.

To encourage mindfulness, items such as journals, aromatherapy and mindfulness cards were added to bags as well, she said.

“The other focus was self care and hygiene,” Throndson said. “The feeling of comfort in your body is incredibly important for mental health and wellness, so we included things like hygiene products, different clothing items and self care items.”

Throndson said she felt gratitude when she learned the Tuchman Family Foundation wanted to donate sup-

plies to Traverse Academy.

“Prior to their initiative, we were trying to figure out — what do we send them off with? And we didn’t have the budget for that to be as impactful as the Tuchman foundation is allowing us to be with this,” she said. “I’m really excited to be able to give them … a toolbox of coping strategies to set them up for success.”

“It really shows me how much the community wants to take care of our kids and their mental health, and that makes me really happy, too,” she added.

The contribution from the Tuchman Family Foundation gives hope to Kimberly Avalos, the principal of Traverse Academy.

“We felt extremely honored that the Tuchman foundation was invested in us and wanted to do this for the kids,” she said.

The welcome and launch bags provide helpful tools for students as they work to improve their mental health, she said.

“Being able to understand that those tools don’t just exist within these walls but can be used lifelong for them is a really important message we want to empower them with as they leave here, so they can continue that journey,” Avalos said.

Avalos said the foundation is helping send the message that the students matter and are worth the investment.

“This community support really helps us to get that message that not only is the school system investing,” she said. “But really, the community really does believe in us (and) really does want what’s best for us. That’s a pretty important message to send.”

Reflecting on Traverse’s first six weeks

Traverse Academy, which has been open for about six weeks, has 12 students currently, with roughly another 20 students who are going through the intake process, Avalos said.

“We’re learning a lot,” she said. “I think, on the whole, things have gone really, really

well.”

The students currently at Traverse are either in middle school or high school. There are plans to open up the facility to students in fourth grade and up starting in January, she said.

Avalos said Traverse’s first group of students have gone through the intensive outpatient program and are getting ready to move to the facility’s transition program, which helps prepare them to go back to their home schools.

When asked about the biggest successes in the past six weeks, Avalos said, “Watching these kids come in, in very fragile states, and start to take risks that they wouldn’t have taken before, start to smile, start to communicate about their needs.”

A challenge has been navigating the differences between the clinical world and school world, she said.

“We’re figuring out how to dance together — not step on each other’s toes but be complimentary dance partners,” Avalos said.

Ken Tuchman, of the Tuchman Family Foundation, said he thinks that Traverse Academy is a model that should have started 10 years ago.

“I would argue that we need to have one of these in every community,” he said.

“We don’t have to educate the public that there’s a mental health crisis. What we need to do is actually have a solution to a mental health crisis.

This is one of many solutions,” he added.

Tuchman highlighted the importance of being proactive in investing in providing mental health care to young people.

He said it is in the best interest of children, their families and society as a whole to have children who are educated and in a good mental state.

Debra Tuchman, co-founder of the Tuchman Family Foundation, said a person’s mental health and emotional well-being is as foundational as their heart beating.

If a person is not feeling emotionally capable, they cannot learn, she said. She underscored the value of Tra-

verse Academy offering both mental health care as well as education programming.

“I’m so hopeful to see this facility,” she said. “I think it’ll be transformative for these kids.”

Supporting students’ mental health

Traverse Academy serves a specific need within the mental health continuum, said Principal Kimberly Avalos.

“We have other things in … our school district and other students who need access to different levels and different specialties within this continuum,” she said.

Avalos said the Cherry Creek Schools Foundation’s Mental Health Relief Fund has been imperative to helping some students access care.

“That relief fund through the foundation is pivotal in helping to build a bridge for students that may otherwise have been lost in the shuffle or in the cracks,” she said.

According to Cherry Creek Schools, the mental health relief fund helps connect students to a therapist and provides resources for students experiencing different mental health challenges.

The fund has given more than $100,000 to support student mental health initiatives in the school district, and approximately 48 students have been connected to an outside therapist, per the school district.

Navigating health care is difficult, but mental health care is even harder to access and navigate, Avalos said.

“The community support in different initiatives and programs like this, it helps. It helps to build those bridges where they didn’t exist,” she said. “That’s why the investment from the community is imperative.”

Due to the lawsuit, Chavez said Sam’s Automotive had to file for bankruptcy to stall a foreclosure of its property.

Chavez said if there is no appeal, then “non-appeal zoning” will occur on the property and Embrey Partners, which plans to build a 395-unit residential complex on the property, will potentially close on the property in February.

“They’re chomping at the bit and super excited for the project,” Chavez said.

Chavez said once the deal is finally able to go through he will be able to take care of debts for the company and himself and move forward.

Also on Dec. 5, Williams was officially sworn in to the Englewood school

board, after he had run unopposed for the office.

Community members expressed concern regarding Williams in the leadup to the Nov. 7 election after the Englewood Herald reported that he had the active arrest warrant in the ongoing court case, two felony theft convictions and a litigious history, including the suit against the city.

Englewood High School senior and student journalist Michael Marquis, who interviewed Williams for a podcast in October before the Herald reported on Williams’ criminal history, spoke at the Dec. 5 school board meeting about his concerns regarding the situation. Under current law, the only criminal background that can keep someone from joining a school board is a conviction for a sexual offense against a child.

“I believe there needs to be more regulations in place for the protection of our students,” Marquis said. “We want to ensure a transparent, legal and thorough vetting process for not only

our district but the rest of the school districts through the state of Colorado.”

State Rep. Meg Froelich, D-Arapahoe County, attended the Dec. 5 school board meeting and she said Williams could lose his seat depending on the results of his pending felony charge.

“Currently the law states in C.R.S. 2231-129: ‘A school director office shall be deemed to be vacant upon the occurrence of any one of the following events prior to the expiration of the term of office:… (e) if the person who was duly elected or appointed is found guilty of a felony,”’ Froelich said. “So perhaps this matter will be resolved in the ensuing months if a felony conviction occurs.”

Froelich said she will address the matter with Englewood residents.

“I’ll continue to listen to our community and to look into increasing the requirements to run for school board,” Froelich said. “At a minimum we could update the disclosure forms that people fill out. I believe voters deserve both information and choices.”

Crawford and Berger went to college together in upstate New York and started Denver Beer Company over their shared love of the beverage.

For Berger, who grew up in Englewood, having a location in the south metro area is especially exciting.

Cherry Creek board members take oath for new terms

The Cherry Creek School District Board of Education has officially sworn in its recently elected members.

The school district has more than 53,000 students across 67 schools. Its board of education is made up of five directors.

Three board of education director positions were up for election in November — a District A seat, District B seat and District C seat.

Incumbent Directors Anne Egan, representing District A, and Angela Garland, representing District C, won their bids for re-election.

New to the board of education is Ruthie Knowles, who ran unopposed for the District B seat. She is taking the place of former Director Janice McDonald, who was term-limited.

Heading to 45

t’s my birthday month. My birthday is on the very last day of the year. Many celebrate it under the guise of it being New Year’s Eve. I know for FROM THE many, turning 50 is the big mile EDITOR marker year, but for some reason this year, 44 going into 45 has been a year full of reflection.

I am a busy mother with young children.

There are drawThelma Grimes backs to waiting to have children when you’re older.

As a nearly 45-year-old, I have to say when the 7-year-old is asking you for another game of 1v1 basketball you say no while trying to catch your breath after losing the first game.

So, as a parent, I reflected a lot this year on being better in many ways and also being more accepting. That’s a hard thing for a control freak like me. My teenage daughter and I have a much better relationship after I reevaluated the standards I hold her to while realizing they can’t be the standards I would set for myself.

I also looked at boundaries a lot more heading into year 45. How many boundaries should I set at work? What boundaries do I set with elected leaders who call or text on weekends or evenings? Believe me, with all the local elections this year — I had to evaluate when I took calls from candidates and the time I gave them outside of work hours.

It is hard as an editor when you interrupt a game or conversation with your kids because you must “take this call.”

I would say it was a victory in several of those categories. I have established more boundaries. I have been more present with kids. However, I still think I have room for improvement.

I also spoke up a lot more this year. That came with both negative and positive outcomes. Me being more outspoken at home where I take care of my parents and am responsible for a lot has been good

and bad. In my professional life — same outcome. In some ways, me speaking up more is good. In some ways, I could have done better in how I did it.

Heading to 45, I also looked at myself a lot. Early last year, I even wrote a column about how my New Year’s resolution was to cut myself a break.

In some areas I did. I allowed myself to understand I can’t do everything. Nor should I. I can’t control everything. That is an impossible goal. It’s OK to not expect to be in charge of everything.

However, I can’t stress enough that cutting yourself a break as a mother is probably where I did not meet the goal. Man, do I worry that it’s my fault the 7-year-old is not at the reading level he should be. A bit of disagreement with the hockey coach did not make my 10-yearold son happy even if I was saying something in his best interest.

I constantly worry about my kids’ mental and physical health and rarely cut myself a break in those regards.

Then, there is self-improvement.

Heading into 45 I have vowed to work on myself.

I started seeing a therapist and talking about my feelings. For a bit, it was helpful. However, like most moms, I could not justify the cost, insurance does not pay for it, and the hour sessions ended up being me talking about how to care for my parents, family and deal with work.

Not so much about me and my actual feelings.

Now, I look at 45. How can I take more steps to help myself? I am hoping some change of scenery will help that. I am hoping to get into the natural therapy we have around us in the coming year. Hiking, road trips and more should help me become healthier mentally and physically as I look at the next five years heading into 50.

For those who know me, the fact that I am creating a five-year plan heading into 50 would not surprise any of them.

Hope amid hopelessness

W

hen dreams shatter, despair tightens its grip. Hurting people often lose sight of hope, instead spiraling into cynicism. Yet even in life’s bleakest moments, hope flickers for those determined to find its light. During seasons of widespread hopelessness, aspiring to hope takes courage and defiance.

Hope is not denial of hardship, but refusal to let hardship have the final word. Authentic hope stares suffering in the face, mourns loss deeply, then still dares to ask — what’s possible now? It is grief and optimism entwined. Sometimes we must help rekindle hope’s faded embers in others.

We can be the hopeful friend who will listen without judgment when people unload their bitterness. We can gently remind them of their strength and that better days will come.

Other times, hope is a quiet personal choice — a private beacon only we can see. We tend its flame through prayer, Scripture, or moments of beauty that pierce the fog. We shield hope from the hurricane of despair raging around us. Living hopefully does not minimize others’ pain or imply we have answers they lack. It simply means we cling to possibility and light rather than drowning in gloom with them. We soften rather than harden.

Zig Ziglar had a famous quote, “The doors of hope swing widest on the hinges of encouragement.” Who are you encouraging today? Who is encouraging you today? Either way, and sometimes both ways, hope is being transferred.

During seasons of widespread hopelessness, hoping feels like an act of defiance. It is refusing to let darkness dim our vision for the future. When hope seems most improbable, that is when nurturing hope matters most. A single hopeful person can Michael Norton spark revival. Even when you feel alone in your hope, believe brighter days are coming. Hope floats on the winds of God’s faithfulness, rising and falling for a time but never fully vanishing. Where hope persists, joy follows.

Saying farewell

It was Council Member Moon’s final district meeting as a council member, as her term is about to end. During the meeting, officials thanked Moon for her contributions to the city.

“I have learned so much from you and your perspective,” Council Member Carnes said to Moon.

“I just thank you, personally, for sharing a different perspective — but one that was so helpful and essential for our city.”

Residents thanked Moon for speaking on their behalf at meetings, sharing knowledge about the history of the city and serving others before herself.

“I really appreciate you all having the confidence to allow me to serve you for the last eight years,” Moon

said. “I truly take into heart that I serve you. I don’t serve myself.”

Council members introduced Amy Tharp, the newly-elected District 1 council member who will be taking Moon’s seat in early January.

“Thank you all, the people of District 1, for supporting me, for believing in me, for voting me in,” Tharp said. “I’m just absolutely thrilled and honored that you would do that for me.”

Tharp has worked in education for more than 30 years, teaching in local schools like Highland Elementary and Field Elementary.

Although she has retired, she still substitute teaches.

“I wanted to thank the leadership and to let you know how important Littleton Public Schools is in our community, and how … their guidance for me, their training, their leadership, has helped me to get here as a leader now in Centennial on the city council,” Tharp said.

Remembering Janet S. Meeker September 3, 1947 to December 7, 2003

Jan’s energy, drive, friendship, love, and enthusiasm has been missed the past twenty years and will continue to be missed by those who knew her.

She is survived by: John Meeker; daughter,Jennifer (Cliff) Baumback; Jan’s grand children, Payton, Charlotte, Ashleigh, Robert.

She was a certified Timer for daughter Jennie’s Blue Fins summer club swim meets. Jan was a great fan of the theater, opera, Janet Evanovich novels, and French impressionist art. She loved traveling with John and Jennie to visit the stomping grounds of great writers to get a sense of areas covered in their writings. Jan led student group tours to Europe on several occasions.

Born a natural instructor, she thrived on being an enthusiastic advisor for the DECA program at Chatfield High School in Jefferson County where she taught English literature, writing, and college prep courses. She was English Department

Chairwoman, advanced placement English teacher, and faculty advisor for the Student Senate at Jeffco’s Jefferson High School. Her creative instincts sparked an evening program “Spaghetti and Hamlet”, presented in our living room, for the Shakespeare students where she presented Hamlet during a detailed three hour “stop and go” video presentation of Hamlet while eating a spaghetti dinner.

She authored numerous articles and poems.

She was editor of The Colorado Genealogist, a member of the Colorado Genealogical Society, a member of the Colorado Language Arts Society and had been active in Scouting and contributed to development of High Adventure programs at BSA Camp Tahosa.

Francis Floyd “Floyd” Shoemaker January 15, 1933 - November 19, 2023

A love of learning, a love of teaching, and a love of family were hallmarks in Floyd’s life. He passed away November 19 at home in Littleton with his family at his bedside.

Floyd was born January 15, 1933, in Greeley, Colorado, soon after his parents, Harriet and Walter Floyd, had completed degrees at Colorado State Teachers College.

Depression-era teaching jobs led his family to Denver, where Floyd graduated from South High School in 1952. If it hadn’t been for the 4-H club, a youth development organization, Floyd and his future wife, Connie, might never have met. Love blossomed for the two teenagers when they were delegates from Denver to the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago. The couple went to Colorado A&M college on 1952, became honor scholars, and co-editors of the Rocky Mountain Collegian newspaper.

Marriage in their senior year was followed by a move to the University of Missouri, where Connie taught high school English and Floyd completed an M.A. in Journalism.

Floyd returned to what now had become Colorado State University to chair a new major in Technical Journalism. The birth of three children and further education were combined as he pursued and received a doctorate in Communication and Social

Change at Michigan State University.

The most adventurous move for the family of five was to American University in Cairo, Egypt, where Dr. Floyd, as an Associate Professor, developed a new graduate program for Egyptian students employed in the mass media. After a life-changing four years in Cairo, a happy return to Colorado produced positions as a researcher at the Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI), Associate Professor at the University of Denver for 22 years, and Regional Training Manager for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for 19 years. Floyd’s retirement was markanuaryted by two of his loves: learning and teaching. He facilitated 17 popular courses in philosophy and religion for Osher Life Long Learning Institute (OLLI).

Floyd is survived by his children, Troy Shoemaker and Melissa Hull; his grandchildren Kayla and Jesslyn Shoemaker, Benjamin Hull, Socratis (Cody) Tilliros, Antony Tilliros, and Loucas Tilliros in Cyprus; and his youngest brother Forrest.

He is preceded in death by his daughter Sonja Shoemaker Tilliros, his mother and father, Harriet and Walter Floyd, and brothers Rollin and Gene.

A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church Saturday, January 13, 2 p.m.

taring into a kiln glowing orange at 2,350 degrees, an artist armed with thick leather gloves holds a fragile piece of molten glass at the end of a steel rod.

This is the point where creativity, talent and inspiration combine to create a one-of-a-kind piece of glass never to be duplicated.

Sand and silica are the main components; soda ash and lime are combined to the mixture as raw ingredients, Corey Siverman of The Furnace: A Glassworks in Lakewood said. Industrial glass that’s made in a factory by machines works in a different way versus what we do by hand.

The Furnace is a glass workshop that dedicates 90% of its production to retail sales, according to Siverman. Thousands of ornaments will be handmade and shipped from this location.

“I have galleries all around the country. I’ve got over 100 galleries that buy my work,” Siverman said during a recent interview at his small production facility. “I sell to magazines. I sell to corporate gift companies. I sell to a lot of retail buyers through our store here. As well as Etsy, so we have a wide variety of customers.”

The months leading up to the holidays are the busiest time of year for Siverman and his coowner and wife, Leanne.

Siverman started blowing glass objects/art more than 30 years ago, he said he’s still learning.

“You start with a clear glass that’s molten out of the furnace at 2,100 degrees, gather it up on your blowpipe, and apply a color called Frit,” Siverman said. “You then reheat the glass, shape it and put a bubble into it after you put a pattern into it with your color. Once you’ve got your shape the way you want it you let it stabilize, you finish it off and put it in the oven (about 500 degrees) for as many as 12 hours.”

The Furnace is not only a commercial facility, employing less than a dozen production and distribution assistants, it’s a learning environment, offering introductory instruction to anyone with a desire to learn the craft.

“You learn something every time you walk through the door,” Siverman said about the classes.

However, patience, practice and commitment are prerequisites.

“People ask me, ‘How long will it take me to get good?’” Silverman said. “I like to tell people it’s a 10year commitment before you’re really good at this. You have to be very committed to it.”

Yet, each piece is completely original to the artist.

“The goal is to make products that will not be like anything you’ve ever seen before,” Siverman said.

Cremation Glass Art offers ashes in eternal suspension In an unassuming garage in Greeley, an artist incorporates the cremated ashes of loved ones

and even pets into molded and forged glass pieces that are incomparable.

“For the cremation art I do believe that working with human ashes is what hits my heart and soul the most,” said Tiffany Koehn with Red Manx Studio.

During a recent visit with the artist, Koehn worked to fold, curl and mold a small piece of molten glass in a 2,150 degree gas-fired kiln.

The idea of incorporating precious ashes within the glass was conceived in 2009, Koehn said. The epiphany was achieved with a very personal story.

In 2008, Koehn’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“Mom’s cancer journey and watching her and everybody in that chemo room teetering on death hit me,” Koehn said. “Mom came out of it, but there’s a lot of people in that chemo room that didn’t live through their experiences.”

“If I can help families get through it with something more special than a box on a mantle, then that’s what I want to do, especially with the children’s pieces,” Koehn said.

Here the customer, their story and vision are incorporated in each unique color selection and swirl of soft molten glass.

Koehn welcomes each buyer to be part of the process and witness the creation of the unique glass piece as it’s conceived and shaped in her small garage.

Nearly a dozen times over, Koehn heated and shaped the glass at the end of a metal pipe.

Koehn uses a unique tool made of wet wood which is created by several species of bacteria that enter a tree through wounds, keeping the wood malleable, which is perfect against the blazing hot temperatures of the molten glass.

The soft cylindrical shape of the wood creates the rounded edges with continuous turning of the delicate glass.

Koehn spends at least 18 hours repeating the process of heating, shaping, molding and cooling each glass piece.

In the end, each customer is presented with a keepsake unlike any in existence, just like their loved one.

Katie Wilberding Cross named president of board

After taking the oath of office on Dec. 5 for the Englewood Schools Board of Education, Katie Wilberding Cross was also made board president.

Wilberding Cross said she is excited to take on her new role as president and serve Englewood Schools.

“I feel both excited and honored to be entrusted with the responsibilities of this role,” Wilberding Cross said.

She said she enjoyed her first official meeting as a member of the board. For Wilberding Cross, the best part of her first meeting was engaging and celebrating students, staff and community members.

“It was so wonderful to recognize and celebrate their hard work and accomplishments. I also enjoyed hearing the presentation from Englewood High School students and staff,” Wilberding Cross said. “These amazing people are the heart of the Englewood school’s community, so it is a wonderful opportunity to learn about how they have made our community better and exemplify our core values.”

As she embarks on her new term, Wilberding Cross said she is looking forward to getting to know other members on the board and “learning how to work collaboratively.”

“The board will spend several days this week at the Colorado Association of School Boards Conference deepening our un-

derstanding of the important work ahead,” Wilberding Cross said. “At the heart of the work of the school board and the district are the children, families and community we serve,” she said.

“My hope for the district is that we continue to provide the highest quality education and opportunities for all children to learn, grow and thrive.”

Additionally, Wilberding Cross said she wants to continue showcasing the district through “Big opportunities in a small setting.”

“Declining enrollment is a challenge across the metro area, and I believe that through strong collaboration, communication and transparency, my fellow school Katie Wilberding Cross, elected Nov. 7 to the Engleboard members and the district wood Schools Board of Education, was chosen as leadership team will be able to board president on Dec. 5. address this challenge,” she said.

Fire breaks out on Xcel Energy pole

An electrical transformer on an Xcel Energy pole near downtown Littleton exploded and briefly caught fire, startling neighbors in the area.

The incident happened in the alley near Church Avenue and South Rapp Street. It caused a power outage in the area and the fire quickly extinguished itself.

Officials said no injuries were reported.

The initial 911 call came in at 10:08 a.m. on Dec. 7, South Metro Fire Rescue spokesperson Eric Hurst said.

“It sounded pretty scary initially,” Hurst said. “The initial call was for an explosion and black

The transformer caught fire but it went out on its own and did not spread to any buildings, Hurst said.

Hurst said by the time South Metro fire crews arrived, the fire and smoke were nonissues.

The Arapahoe Community College Campus Police and the Littleton Police Department also responded to the scene, Hurst said.

According to Xcel’s outage status website, power is back up in the area.

ability to serve the board of education since he is currently in the stages of a felony charge accusation and if he were to be charged I am not aware of what his sentence may be, but it could very well hinder his ability to serve on the board,” Marquis said.

The senior said he is also concerned about the state’s current legal requirements that one must meet in order to serve on a school board. The only mention of criminal background is that a school board member cannot have been convicted of committing a sexual offense against a child.

“Currently, so many individuals could be convicted of some very serious crimes including murder and kidnapping, and the current background check done statewide would not detect these charges,” Marquis said. “I think in those instances specifically it would be very inappropriate to allow those individuals access to any school grounds, let alone represent the safety of the students.”

During his public comment, Marquis said he believes new guidelines

need to be established statewide.

“It is my belief that the following be implemented not only by our school district but at the state level as well,” he said. “Individuals with any active warrants of any variety should not be eligible to run for board or be allowed access to any school grounds.

If an on-campus officer discovers an active warrant, appropriate actions should be taken by the department they represent. An individual needs to receive a verdict on any impending felony cases before they can apply to run. If a running candidate receives a pending felony charge they need to sort out their charge and receive a verdict prior to election or they must drop from the running. Non-violent felony convictions should make a person ineligible to run for a school board position if committed within the past five to 10 years of their application. Violent felony convictions should make a person permanently ineligible to run for school board positions.”

Marquis said he feels the “current regulations in place (in) the State of Colorado are falling short of the bare minimum.”

“I hope to take this matter up the chain of command as far as I can

take it to change state law regarding school board candidate eligibility,” Marquis said. “I hope to be a student voice fighting for students statewide, and if I get lucky other states would hopefully follow.”

Englewood has roughly 22,000 registered voters, and while the school district is a little smaller than the city boundary, a 10% requirement would mean around 2,000 valid signatures would be needed for a recall petition sufficient to trigger an election.

When he’s spoken to other students about the state qualifications for school board candidates, Marquis said his peers agree that this is a concerning issue that needs to be addressed.

Marquis said in addition to being a student journalist, he is student body treasurer and he is involved in Pirate TV, the Pirateer and yearbook.

Additionally, Marquis said during his advocacy of this issue he will not be writing or reporting on anything regarding Williams or the school board while working for the Pirateer.

Recall would be heavy lift

Citizens on social media have brought up the idea of a potential recall. Superintendent Joanna Polzin said in the event of a recall of a board member, the district will follow the law and procedure listed on the Colorado Secretary of State website.

The website states, “an elected official must hold office for 6 months before a recall can be attempted.”

Additionally, the Uniform Election Code of 1992 C.R.S. § 1-12-105 states “a petition to recall a school district officer shall be signed by eligible electors of the school district equal in number to at least forty percent of the entire vote cast at the last preceding election for all candidates for the school district director position occupied by the incumbent sought to be recalled.”

However, it goes on to say: “In no case shall the number required for recall be less than ten percent of eligible electors qualified to vote in the
