South Metro Fire Rescue’s board of directors passed a resolution opposing Proposition HH, a statewide issue on the Nov. 7 ballot.

If passed, Proposition HH would reduce property taxes owed and allow the state to keep additional money that would otherwise be refunded to taxpayers, according to the state ballot information booklet, also called the Blue Book.

South Metro Fire Rescue provides emergency and prevention services to approximately 540,000 residents across three counties — Arapahoe, Douglas and Jefferson. The agency is governed by an elected board of directors.

According to the Oct. 16 resolution, the board “expresses its strongest possible opposition to Proposition HH” and encourages voters to vote against it.

It states, in part, “If passed, Proposition HH will threaten to impair the district’s ability to provide the same level of emergency response and life

safety services and facilities that it currently provides.”

Property taxes account for more than 80% of South Metro Fire Rescue district’s revenues, according to the resolution.

The resolution said the district’s property tax revenues will already be reduced by approximately $6.85 million through the assessed value reductions enacted in SB21-293 and SB22-238 and the market value reductions enacted by the Douglas County assessor.

Proposition HH could further reduce the district’s property tax revenues by about $5 million to $15 million in the budget year 2024, and up to $8 million in future years, per the resolution.

“While the district understands the financial burden that the sharp rise in property values may create, the district and its citizens should determine the appropriate property tax revenues to collect, rather than a statewide policy that doesn’t account for local circumstances,” the resolution said, in part.

active members, also opposes Proposition HH. On its Facebook page, the organization said, “Support your firefighters and vote NO on Proposition HH.” What is Proposition HH?

Proposition HH primarily impacts taxpayers in two ways — lowering the amount they owe in property taxes and changing their TABOR refunds, according to the Blue Book.

Residents can use an online calculation tool to estimate how the combination of the property tax changes and TABOR refund changes would impact them. To access the tool, visit: hhcalc. apps.coleg.gov.

“The changes in Proposition HH are in place until 2032, but the measure allows the state legislature to extend them without additional voter approval,” the Blue Book states.

Lowering property taxes

Proposition HH would lower the assessment rates for residential property and most nonresidential property, according to the Blue Book.

It also would subtract a set amount from most properties’ values before applying the new assessment rates.

“Lower assessment rates and value reductions are estimated to reduce property taxes owed statewide by $400 million in 2024, $960 million in 2025, and $1,090 million in 2026,” the Blue Book states.

Proposition HH would allow people aged 65 and older who have previously qualified for the senior homestead exemption to receive the same property tax benefit in any home they purchase and live in as their primary residence starting in 2025, according to the Blue Book.

The ballot measure also proposes creating a property tax revenue limit for certain local governments, with the exception that school districts and home rule jurisdictions are not subject to the limit.

The Blue Book said under this limit, many local governments “cannot collect property tax revenue above the amount they collected in the prior year plus inflation.”

A local government can waive the limit by annually notifying the public, holding a meeting for public comment and adopting an ordinance or resolution.

“The local government revenue limit may decrease property taxes owed by an additional $510 million in 2024, $470 million in 2025, and $520 million in 2026, depending on how many local governments waive the limit,” the Blue Book states.

TABOR refund impact

The Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights, also called TABOR, limits the amount of money the state government can collect, per the Blue Book. If money is collected above the limit, the excess must be refunded to taxpayers — a TABOR refund.

Proposition HH would create a new cap on the amount of money the state may retain over its revenue limit. This new cap would be higher than the current cap.

The ballot measure would allow the state to retain an estimated $170 million in the state budget year 2023-24 and $360 million in the state budget year 2024-25, per the Blue Book.

According to the Blue Book, the retained money would be used in the following ways: • Up to 20% to reimburse eligible local governments for lost property tax revenue.

• Up to $20 million each year for rental assistance.

• Remaining funds to reimburse school districts for reduced property tax revenue as a result of the measure and for education-related programs, estimated at $125 million in the state budget year 2024-25, and up to $2.16 billion in the state budget year 203132.

According to The Colorado Sun, ambulance, fire and health districts “would be completely reimbursed for their revenue reductions until their area assessed property values rise more than 20% above their 2022 levels. After that threshold is reached, the state will only reimburse half of their lost funding.”

If voters pass Proposition HH, the 2023 TABOR refunds are estimated to be $832 for single filers, per The Colorado Sun. In 2024 and 2025, TABOR refunds would be expected to decrease compared to what they would be under current law, according to the Blue Book.

“The measure’s impact on TABOR refunds over the long term depends on population growth, inflation, and state revenue collections,” the Blue Book states.

School board candidate has felony record, records show Arrest warrant is active for unopposed candidate

Davon Williams, who is running unopposed for the Englewood Schools Board of Education, is a twice-convicted felon with an active arrest warrant, records show.

Affidavits from Denver and Adams County courts, as well as records from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, show a list of charges going back more than a decade.

They include felony convictions for aggravated motor vehicle theft and theft. Court records show he was originally sentenced to probation in both felony cases, but probation was revoked in 2017 and he was resentenced to 90 days in jail in each case, with the sentences to be served simultaneously.

There is also an arrest warrant for Williams that has been active since January 2020, according to the Adams County Combined Court Records Department.

The school board election is Nov. 7, and Williams is seeking one of two open seats. School boards make policies at the local level, including oversight of district budgets and hiring of superintendents. Englewood school board members are not paid for their service, although they may

request reimbursement for boardrelated expenses such as mileage.

Williams is uncontested for a fouryear term that will begin weeks after the November election.

Records show that Williams’ active arrest warrant is for a 2019 allegation of “aggravated motor vehicle theft second degree” in Westminster.

According to the affidavit, a buyer purchased a car from Williams and it broke down months later. The buyer arranged for Williams to tow it to a mechanic’s shop. After some discussion of Williams buying back the vehicle while it was allegedly in the shop, contact ceased. The buyer’s next knowledge of the vehicle’s whereabouts came six days later when Denver police notified the buyer that the vehicle had been found in a parking garage, the affidavit says.

Representatives from the Adams County Sheriff ’s Office and the Westminster Police Department said any agency can act on the arrest warrant if Williams is placed in front of an officer and there is reason to run his name. He could be taken into the custody of whatever local agency might arrest him and transported to Adams County.

Additionally, records show that Williams was convicted in Denver for an aggravated motor vehicle theft he committed in 2012 when he purchased a 2006 Porsche Cayenne with a check that bounced when the car dealer attempted to deposit

it. The dealer later located the car at the Douglas County home of Williams’ parents, according to the case affidavit.

Records also show Williams was convicted in Denver of another felony theft that the affidavit says he committed in late 2013. The affidavit shows the victim claimed Williams took $6,500 of his money under the false pretenses of using it as an investment for “an after party for a talent” in connection with a Williams business, D and A Entertainment.

That theft case was prosecuted in 2014, records show. Williams attempted to appeal his conviction in 2016, but the register of actions in the case shows the appeal was dismissed. A 2017 document from the Colorado Court of Appeals shows appeals for both the 2012 and 2013

felonies were listed as dismissed.

Williams also attempted to sue the victim of the 2013 theft for defamation, but according to the register of actions in that case, the lawsuit was dismissed without prejudice in 2017.

Williams did not respond to multiple requests for comment, including phone calls to two phone numbers and emails sent to two email addresses with messages describing what topics this story would cover.

The phone number listed on his school board candidate profile appears to have been disconnected.

the November election. The other candidate is Katie Wilberding Cross.

A check of state and federal court records found no misdemeanors, felonies or civil litigation cases involving Wilberding Cross.

In both his school board candidate profile and on his LinkedIn page, Williams describes himself as a “serial entrepreneur, seed investor, musician, current members of the Recording Academy and the Managing General Partner of a multinational company called Canberra Partners.”

On his LinkedIn page, the 34-yearold Williams says he is the managing general partner, managing partner, principal owner, owner-CEO, managing director, president of operations/partner, or owner of two dozen named businesses.

On the Englewood Schools website, when asked why he is running for school board, Willams wrote that it is “because I feel a desire to better my community further than I have currently.”

He added: “After participating in a historic referendum with 1400+ of my neighbors to try and stop overdevelopment by an overzealous city, I figured I would turn my talents to the school board, to see what good work I could participate in and

board. Those qualifications include: “Be a registered voter in the school district for at least 12 consecutive months before the election; not have been convicted of committing a sexual offense against a child; and because school director elections are nonpartisan, candidates may not campaign as members of a political party.”

Duane Tucker, president of the Englewood Schools Board of Education, was asked by the Englewood Herald to comment on this story.

Tucker responded in writing.

“The qualifications for candidates for school director are established

by Colorado Revised Statutes Section 22-31-107,” Tucker wrote. “Candidates are required to file an Affidavit of School Director Candidate on Qualifications for Office with the Designated Election Official (DEO).

The DEO is allowed to rely on the Affidavit and the candidate’s certifications therein without further investigation.”

Williams is one of two school board candidates running unopposed in

Williams and Gary Kozacek, with whom he shares an address, were at the center of a petition fight to stop the rezoning of the Sam’s Automotive site, where a proposed residential development is now on hold due to a lawsuit Williams and Kozacek recently filed against the city and city clerk in Arapahoe County District Court. Documents show the lawsuit is ongoing.

Williams, Kozacek and fellow Englewood residents Kurt Suppes and Sandy Kettelhut also filed a petition about a week ago for a referendum to prevent changes to the city’s Unified Development Code, a density-increasing ordinance known as CodeNext, from taking effect. The CodeNext plan won a 4-3 approval vote from the city council on Sept.

25. The deadline for referendum petition signatures was late on Oct. 26.

Williams has a history of engaging in civil litigation, including a lawsuit he filed against various corporate and governmental entities in 2021.

closure sale. Defendants are the surface owners. Mr. Williams believes he is entitled to access his mineral estate via defendants’ property. It should be noted that the properties involved are near or around the highly developed land just south of the giant Park Meadows Mall, south of Denver, in or near the City of Lone Tree. He also alleges that the City Defendants are interfering with his rights by requiring the surface owners’ consent to explore for minerals and by ‘plac[ing] arbitrary rules ... to issue us a special use permit to drill properties to determine mineral content under.’”

According to documentation from the case, the “court finds that plaintiff acted with objective bad faith in bringing and prosecuting this case and that sanctions are also an appropriate exercise of the court’s inherent authority.” Williams was ordered to pay $115,000 in legal fees to various defendants in that case, records show.

Additionally, records show Williams sued the City and County of Denver after he allegedly was injured in a 2012 slip and fall in the Simonet Detention Center, the downtown jail. Records show that suit was dismissed in 2013.

In 2021, voters approved ballot measure 3A, which increased the sales tax rate from 3% to 3.75% to fund capital improvement projects.

When the city posed 3A to voters,

they underestimated how much money they would receive from the new tax and other revenue sources in 2022.

City staff said the underestimate was mainly due to how quickly Littleton’s economy bounced back from the COVID-19 pandemic, which they did not expect to happen so fast.

Three total city council races are on the ballot, with two of them unopposed.

Former Littleton Public Schools Board of Education member Robert Reichardt is running unopposed to represent District 2 and candidate Andrea Vukovich Peters is running unopposed to represent District 4.

In the race for the at-large seat, current At-Large City Councilmember Pam Grove is running against candidate Chris Campbell, who owns the Olde Towne Tavern in downtown Littleton.

Whoever is elected will serve a fouryear term on the city council.

Littleton Public Schools Board of Education In the race for the Littleton Public Schools Board of Education, four candidates are running for two atlarge seats. The two elected individuals will serve a four-year term.

Ballot measure 3K

In addition to selecting representatives, Littleton voters will make a decision about the city’s tax revenue on

this election’s ballot.

Ballot measure 3K asks voters to allow Littleton to retain about $6 million in extra revenue generated by the 3A sales tax and other city revenue sources in 2022.

If approved, Littleton would use the extra 3A revenue for its intended purpose to continue funding capital improvement projects, as approved by voters in 2021.

If the measure fails, the city will be required to refund extra revenue dollars to taxpayers and reduce its sales tax rate.

Voting information

Voters may return their ballots by mail, at a drop box location or at a polling center.

The county encourages voters returning ballots through the U.S. Mail to return them by Oct. 28. After this date, the county asks voters to use a 24-hour drop box or return the ballot to a Voter Service and Polling Center.

Thirty-five ballot drop boxes are open 24 hours a day at various locations throughout Arapahoe County.

The locations will close at 7 p.m. on election day The county is providing six Voter Service and Polling Centers around the county. These locations provide opportunities for residents to dropoff a voted ballot, request to vote inperson and register to vote in-person, update voter registration and request a replacement ballot.

Centennial council votes 6-1 to oppose Prop. HH Not enough for official resolution

Mail-in ballots started being sent to residents on Oct. 16.

An attempt for the Centennial City Council to oppose Proposition HH narrowly failed by one vote.

Proposition HH is a statewide issue on the Nov. 7 ballot. If passed, it would reduce property taxes owed and allow the state to keep additional money that would otherwise be refunded to taxpayers, according to the state ballot information booklet, also called the Blue Book.

Out of a nine-member city council, at least seven had to support the resolution opposing Proposition HH in order for it to pass.

During the Oct. 17 meeting, seven members of council were present, meaning all seven needed to vote in favor of the resolution for it to pass. Council Member Marlo Alston and Mayor Stephanie Piko were not at the meeting.

After a discussion, which had moments of tension between some council members, the council voted 6-1 for approving the resolution. Since seven votes were needed, the motion failed.

Council Member Christine Sweetland was the sole vote against the resolution.

“I am not in support of … taking a position for the city, as I have not decided how I am voting. So, I don’t feel comfortable taking a position for the city,” Sweetland said. “If the resolution was to support Proposition HH, I would have the same opinion that I don’t feel that we should take a position … on this proposition for the city.”

on TABOR refunds.

Council Member Don Sheehan said he views Proposition HH as an example of a cure that is worse than the disease.

He shared several reasons why he is against the ballot measure, such as his concerns about the impact it will have on property taxes and TABOR refunds, as well as how complex the ballot measure is.

“It’s also very disingenuous … in my mind,” Sheehan said.

A tense moment occurred when, while Sheehan was voicing his opposition to the ballot measure, Sweetland interrupted and said he had spoken for more than five minutes.

According to an audio recording of the meeting, Sheehan had been talking for roughly nine minutes and 30 seconds when Sweetland interrupted.

Mayor Pro Tem Richard Holt said he did not realize there was a five-minute limit on discussion.

Deputy City Attorney Christopher Price said there is a five-minute limitation that can be imposed on a speaker related to a matter that is before the council.

Sheehan asked who was keeping track of the time.

“And it would’ve been nice to have known that prior to me talking,” he said. “I have 30 seconds more to talk, so, if you’ll … give me a little forbearance. I realize you don’t want to hear this, but I have 30 seconds more to speak.”

After some discussion,

Holt asked Sweetland if Sheehan can be permitted to have 30 more seconds to speak.

“Fine. I’m just saying that the rule is five minutes,” Sweetland said.

Sheehan was permitted to continue, and he concluded his statement by saying a series of “if” statements.

“If you care about the city’s budget, if you care about our citizens continuing to receive their constitutionallyguaranteed TABOR refunds, if you care about an honest solution to skyrocketing property taxes, if you care about honesty in legislation, if you care that the state government grows at a reasonable rate — not a skyrocket rate, if you care about fairness, then you should vote no on HH,” he said.

Councilmember Candace Moon said she feels Proposition HH is not clear and leaves a lot of unanswered questions.

Holt pointed out that the city’s staff report said Proposition HH would reduce the city’s property tax revenues below the amounts the city would otherwise collect from 2024 through 2032.

According to the proposed resolution, Proposition HH is estimated to reduce the property tax revenue of the city by approximately $500,000 for 2024, based on assessor reporting.

“This is not a good deal for the city,” Holt said.

Council Member Tammy Maurer highlighted that the South Metro Fire Rescue’s board of directors passed a

resolution opposing Proposition HH. “That’s our fire department,” Maurer said.

Another concern she has is the possibility for changes to be extended without voter approval.

According to the Blue Book, “The changes in Proposition HH are in place until 2032, but the measure allows the state legislature to extend them without additional voter approval.”

Council Member Mike Sutherland said some of his concerns are a loss of revenue for the city, the fiscal impact on special districts, and the issue of local control.

“We just went through a very brutal legislative session where we opposed the governor’s land use bill based on it taking away local control. We are very, very concerned about the state legislature removing local control from local governments,” Sutherland said.

“This is another example of overreach on that,” he added.

Council Member Robyn Carnes also cited a loss of local control as one of the reasons she opposes it.

“I think HH sucks. I’ll just say it,” she said. “I think it is very deceptively written, and it is very unfair to citizens.”

Proposition HH primarily impacts taxpayers in two ways — lowering the amount they owe in property taxes and changing their TABOR refunds, according to the Blue Book.

Experts provide tips to keep sleeping babies safe

When the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended that babies be placed on their back to sleep in the 1990s, the number of sleep-related infant deaths declined for a period of time but have plateaued since then.

Today, unsafe infant sleep is the leading cause of preventable death for children under the age of 1 in Colorado and nationally.

Within a five year span (2017 to 2021) in Colorado, 241 babies passed away from Sudden Unexpected Infant Death, said Amanda Abramczyk-Thill, an injury prevention and outreach specialist for Children’s Hospital Colorado.

Sudden Unexpected Infant Death includes Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, otherwise known as SIDS, which is the sudden and unexplained death of an infant younger than 1 year old.

Accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed, ill-defined deaths and undetermined causes also fall under the umbrella of Sudden Unexpected Infant Death.

Over half of the deaths within the five year period involved an asphyxiation risk, an adult or another individual rolled on top of the baby while sleeping or the baby was wedged between two objects, said AbramczykThill.

With no guaranteed way to prevent SIDS, a safe sleep environment will help lower the risk of all sleep-related infant deaths.

What research shows

In the United States, nearly 3,500 infants die each year of sleep-related infant deaths, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics updated 2022 policy statement.

Children’s Hospital Colorado states between 50 to 80 babies have died from SIDS each year in Colorado since 2004.

Additionally, most deaths occur in babies between two and four months of age and the rate of SIDS tends to increase during the colder months, according to Children’s Hospital Colorado.

Multiple sources have said African American babies are twice as likely and Native American babies are about three times more likely to die of SIDS than white babies.

Although there has been research into SIDS, doctor’s don’t know the exact reason why SIDS affects infants. However, there are factors in a baby’s sleep environment that can put them at higher risk.

“What we’re finding with further investigation of the actual circumstances is that a lot more cases involve that accidental suffocation and strangulation,” said Abramczyk-Thill.

“They’re also finding that it may be undetermined.”

The single largest risk factor for SIDS is stomach sleeping. Some researchers believe that the sleeping position puts pressure on the baby’s jaw, narrowing the airway and therefore, making breathing more difficult.

Other possible theories provided

by Children’s Hospital Colorado include that the position would increase the baby’s risk of “rebreathing” exhaled air. When a baby breathes in exhaled air, the available oxygen level in the body decreases.

Another theory suggests there could be an abnormality in the part of the brain that controls breathing and helps the baby wake up during sleep.

In the wake of the tragic crash that recently killed a seventh-grade student on his way to school, community members want Littleton’s officials to make the streets safer for bicyclists and pedestrians.

On the morning of Oct. 17, a Euclid Middle School student was riding his bike to school when the fatal crash occurred at the intersection of South Elati Street and South Arapahoe Drive.

The death has left the community reeling, with people leaving candles and flowers at the intersection and holding moments of silence to recognize the student.

Several community members in Littleton say the way he died is inexcusably too common.

Last year, Colorado reached an alltime high of 115 pedestrian deaths, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation, or CDOT. The data also shows that 15 bicyclists were killed last year.

Based on recent data, this year might end up being even deadlier.

As of Sept. 30, there were 87 pedestrian fatalities in the state — nine more than at that time last year, according to CDOT. The Euclid Middle School student isn’t the only life lost in Littleton recently. In September, Preston Dunn, a 51-year-old pedestrian, was struck and killed on West Bowles Avenue.

With recent tragedies, the calls for change are getting louder as advocates want better, safer infrastructure for pedestrians and bicyclists.

“Collectively — as a city, as citizens, as advisory boards, as council, all of us — we have let our people down,” said Matt Duff, a community advocate for safer bike and pedestrian infrastructure. “The way that our streets are currently set up is a situation where if people make everyday, normal, human mistakes, it can cost a life.”

Complete streets

Duff has been asking for safer pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure in Littleton for years. He is a member of Vibrant Littleton, a group that advocates for the cause, and a father of four.

“We specifically moved to Littleton because it was a place where our kids could walk or bike to school,” he said.

With his kids walking and biking to Runyon Elementary School, Euclid Middle School and Heritage High School, Duff said he knows the paths for kids to school are not safe enough.

He said the streets need to be designed as “complete streets,” offering dedicated space for many modes of transportation – like bikes, pedestrians and wheelchairs, not just cars.

On streets with painted lanes, there are possibilities for interaction points between cars and bikes, he said. Cars can cross over the lines and parked cars can open their car doors into the bike lane, potentially hitting, and even injuring or killing, cyclists.

One design solution for these routes would be protected bike lanes, Duff said.

Protected bike lanes have curbs, elevation differences or other physical barriers between the bike lane and street in order to reduce interaction between bikes and cars, Duff said.

The Oct. 17 crash is under investigation by the Littleton Police Department, so officials have not announced details about how it occurred.

Duff said the conversation should not be about who made a mistake, but instead about creating streets where people can make mistakes and not have them lead to death.

Especially on routes where children tend to travel, Duff said, this is particularly important.

“Our best opportunity right now is to start with our educational corridors to get kids to school safely,” he said.

Changing design goals and culture

As a member of Littleton’s transportation and mobility board, Duff said it would be helpful to have a clear “complete streets” framework that city staff and board members would always use when assessing maintenance or development projects involving streets.

Ben Traquair, another community advocate for safer bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, said Littleton could start by looking at national and regional design guidelines that already exist, such as those from the National Association of City Transportation Officials.

Becoming an adult today

T

here has been a common conversation taking place around my house over the last few weeks about adultFROM THE hood. With EDITOR my daughter turning 18 this year, finishing high school, and looking to the future — I can say with confidence that I am terThelma Grimes rified.

Becoming what we in society deem to be “an official adult” today is so much harder today than it was in the late 1990s when I entered adulthood or further back when my parents became adults.

Obviously, with my mom and dad, there is a huge difference in that many of them were getting married during or right after high school — that is, if they finished.

For me, it was a drive to get to college, start a career, and be independent. I had it in my head that I would never get married or have kids, especially when I was 18. Things clearly changed.

Now — there is my daughter. She has already had some obstacles in her life, from her biological parents starting her off on a rough path, to her overcoming learning disabilities and dealing with an attachment disorder.

When I was her age, I started college living with my parents and paying a few bills. In all honesty, to this day I say it was one of the best decisions I made by not leaving home paying rent and getting overwhelmed in adulthood too fast.

In today’s world for kids exiting high school — the issues they face are endless. The cost of college today is ridiculous.

college is likely not a real option. She has never done well in school.

She wants to be a flight attendant. This fits who she is.

However, with age and other requirements, that means sorting out what happens after she takes the graduation walk to finish high school in May. Beyond thinking about her future career — today’s world is filled with uncertainty, especially when it comes to the economy.

My daughter recently moved down to our basement, making a comment that it felt like her own apartment. I saw her point to a degree and laughed a little because it’s also partly my office.

As we talked, we got into a discussion about how much a room the size of what she has in my basement would cost in Denver. She was shocked when I explained how much rent for a small apartment or studio is in our community today.

Again, that anxiety as a parent crept up. What is she going to do? She works with a local school but does not make enough right now to venture out and pay bills and live life right now.

Part of me wonders when she could, given today’s cost of living.

Will she be like many of our young people today and relocate to somewhere cheaper, where she can survive? Certainly, that is a possibility.

The unknowns our young adults are facing today are a lot more serious than what I faced when I entered adulthood. Leverage your human differentiators

L

ast week I had the opportunity and privilege to speak with a group of executives and investors about the difference between selling in today’s virtual WINNING environment against what the sales playing WORDS field looked like prepandemic, when faceto-face meetings with customers were more common. This particular group is not alone in their frustration and in their search for a solution that will deliver Michael Norton the sales results that had been forecasted at the beginning of the year.

The first thing we had to do was to go back in time. Even though we believed that our outside sales representatives or account executives were having more face-to-face opportunities to meet with clients and prospects, 70% of what they did was still remote. Research and precall planning, initial calls, followup emails, sending proposals via email, and the natural back-and-forth conversations once that initial meeting took place to try and complete the sale.

Salespeople everywhere are questioning themselves and where they can and should use technology or sales enablement tools, artificial intelligence, and ChatGPT to increase win rates, average deal size, expand upsell and cross sell opportunities, and to reduce sales cycle time. Even the very best sales champions are seeking the best solutions for filling their sales funnel with new prospects.

So, we have a new playing field, remote selling instead of face-to-face. We have new sales enabling technologies that seem to pop up almost every week. We have senior executives who are losing their patience with poor performance and deals that continue to slip monthto-month and quarter-to-quarter. The solution may not be the enabling technologies or the remote selling environment, the solution will come down to making sure that we connect on a human-to-human level.

In an age of digital disruption and automation, the most valuable assets a salesperson can offer are fundamentally human — empathy, creativity, and intuition. While artificial intelligence is

og advancing rapidly, human qualities likew emotional intelligence remain uniquelyI w our own. Savvy salespeople recognizeto this and lead with their humanity.

Showing genuine care and connecting emotionally with prospects is key. Take time to listen deeply to their needs instead of launching into a sales pitch. Be authentic and vulnerable when appropriate to build trust. Demonstrate that you see them as real people, not transactions.

Listen between the lines for clues about motivations and hesitations. Draw on your emotional intelligence to navigate objections smoothly. Adapt your style to each prospect’s personality and buying journey. Customize solutions using your creative problem-solving skills.

Leverage your intuition when deciding strategies. Be willing to deviate from the sales playbook and take measured risks if your gut says it’s right. Lean on experience and lessons learned to guide your instincts.

While AI can analyze data, only humans have the ability to form bonds that turn prospects into loyal clients and raving fans. We can inspire with passion and conviction that no machine can replicate. We can win hearts as well as minds. Think of the word “trust.” People will talk to people that they like, but they will do business with people they trust and respect.

The future of sales belongs to those who embrace the beauty of being human. Lead with empathy, creativity, and intuition. Instinct and agility whether we are selling remotely or in person will be a huge differentiator. These inner strengths and soft skills are what set us apart. They allow us to build diverse relationships that weather shifting markets and technologies. Honing our emotional intelligence gives us an edge no algorithm can match.

Although you may not be in sales, you may know someone who is. Also, with the holidays approaching, Abramczyk-Thill encourages those traveling somewhere to ensure they have the infant’s separate sleep space, whether it’s a pack and play, crib or bassinet.

When an infant is in a properly installed car seat in the vehicle, it’s safe for the infant to be in the car seat for up to an hour and a half to two hours.

Take breaks at regular intervals to allow the baby to be removed from the car seat and held.

“The car seat is not a safe sleep space outside of the vehicle,” said Abramczyk-Thill.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that if a baby falls asleep in a car seat, stroller, swing or sling, to remove the baby to a firm sleep surface on their backs as soon as possible.

In addition to avoiding smoke exposure around the baby, alcohol and illicit drug or substance use, breastfeeding has shown to decrease the risk of SIDS. While it is not entirely clear why breastfeeding reduces the risk of sleep-related infant death, research in an American Academy of Pediatrics article suggests that breastfed infants are more easily aroused from sleep, the maternal responses to infant cues may be stronger and it improves baby’s immune systems.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has put together tools and resources to help guide parents and caregivers on infant safe sleep.

Patricia “Pat” (Matusek) Kenning May 12, 1930 - October 16, 2023

Patricia (Pat) Matusek Kenning was born on May 12, 1930, to Henry J and Mary (Rudney) Matusek, in Chicago IL. She died October 16, 2023 in Centennial, CO. In 1947, she graduated from Fenger High School in Chicago, then attended and graduated from Northwestern University in 1951 with a degree in Elementary Education.

She married Robert L Kenning on August 30, 1953, in Chicago IL. She taught kindergarten in Elkhart, IN before giving birth to daughter Mary and son Mark. But she suffered from asthma and pneumonia in the northern Indiana climate, so in 1961, the family moved to Tucson, AZ, where Thomas and Krista were born. The climate made a huge difference in her health.

In 1963, the family moved to Littleton, and it was there that Pat truly blossomed, she was active in many community affairs: She was a popular speaker to various women and church groups, doing costumed dramatic readings and book reviews in the area for more than 50 years. She was a longtime member of both the Littleton Library and Museum, volunteering her time and talents to further their causes. She started the first children’s story time at the Bemis Library in the mid ‘60s. She was a member of the Littleton Fine Arts committee for several years. She was active in the Bega/ Littleton sister city program. She was a

member and leader of the CzechSlovak Association Lodge #432. She was a long-time member of Grace Lutheran Church in Englewood, and after it closed, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Littleton. She was active in the local and national leadership of Church Women United and the leadership of the Lutheran church body for more than 50 years. She was the Mile Hi United Way Volunteer of the Year in 1973.

Pat loved to travel, visiting all seven continents, most several times. She generously took her children and grandchildren with her, enjoying cruising and sightseeing with them. She was incredibly well read and enjoyed keeping up with current world affairs.

Pat and Bob provided a home where each child was loved, encouraged, nurtured, and disciplined.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 44 years Robert (1997), and grandson Peter Campe (2023). She is survived by brother Ron (Sharon), daughters Mary Campe, and Krista (Jim) Strunc, sons Mark (Diane) and Tom (Tamela), five grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 6322 S. Lakeview, Littleton, at 11 AM on Tuesday November 7, 2023. A reception will follow.

The family requests that memorial gifts be made to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

As people enter The Center on Colfax in Denver, they are greeted by a colorful community altar featuring sugar skulls, flowers, skeleton figures and photos of people.

The altar, called an “ofrenda” in Spanish, is part of the center’s celebration of Day of the Dead, or “Día de los Muertos” — a holiday where people honor dead loved ones.

“A lot of it is about reconnecting with who we are as people and who has been here before us,” said Sandra Zapata, the director of youth services at The Center on Colfax.

Day of the Dead is a pre-Hispanic celebration that predominantly occurs in Mexico on Nov. 1 and Nov. 2, according to the center.

On these days, spirits are believed to return home and spend time with their loved ones, according to The Mexican Museum.

Families build altars with offerings to welcome the spirits.

This year, communities throughout Colorado have planned events in honor of Day of the Dead, with hopes of bringing people together — both in person and in spirit.

At the Sheridan Library in Denver, the community group Sheridan Rising Together for Equity planned to host a Day of the

Dead celebration on Nov. 1 featuring dance performances, food and an exhibition of an altar.

From now until Nov. 5, the library is also hosting a traveling museum exhibition from Museo de las Américas about Day of the Dead, displaying artifacts that help share the history and meaning of the holiday.

Museo de las Américas, a Latin American art museum within Denver’s Art District on Santa Fe, has planned its own celebration in collaboration with other organizations at 5 p.m. on Nov. 3.

In Thornton, the city’s arts and culture division will host the seventh annual Day of the Dead celebration from noon to 5 p.m. Nov. 4 at McAllister Park Center.

Zapata said it is really interesting to see how different communities celebrate Day of the Dead, whether it be hosting a parade, creating a communal ofrenda, or visiting the cemetery where a loved one is buried.

“I want to be in those spaces and I want to reconnect to traditions with other folks who also celebrate Day of the Dead.

Maybe it looks different from what I’m used to, and that’s going to be OK,” Zapata said.

“You get to see what they look like outside of, you know, maybe your own experience — and that’s great.”

The Center on Colfax’s ofrenda

The Center on Colfax, an LGBTQ+ community center based in Denver, has been creating ofrendas for Day of the Dead since about 2016, Zapata said.

This year, the center invited the community to participate in building the ofrenda and bring photos of their loved ones.\ Zapata said people’s willingness to share was very touching.

“For them to share very intimate details about their loved ones and why they meant so much to them, and maybe how tragically they lost them — I think it’s such an honor for folks to feel comfortable enough to be vulnerable in a public space with people that maybe they don’t know,” Zapata said.

Zapata, whose pronouns are they/them, said they grew up in Mexico, and it was a tradition for schools to have an ofrenda every year.

“You get to bring pictures of the folks that you want to remember and bring back on Day of the Dead,” they said. “It was always an activity that we did at school and at home and, kind of, honoring those folks and what they taught us.”

At the age of 16, Zapata moved to Iowa.

“It made me kind of cling on to those celebrations much more because I didn’t want to lose them,” Zapata said. “I wanted to continue to honor the traditions that I grew up with, regardless of where I was and whether or not folks around me were going to celebrate it in the same way.

“I just wanted to make sure that I honored my culture and the things that I grew up with,” they continued.

The ofrenda will be open until the first week of November, Zapata said. Creating it is a way for The Center on Colfax to recognize intersectionality within the community, they added.

“Yes, being part of the LGBTQ+ community is important, but all of our other identities are just as important to us,” they said.

Zapata explained being queer and Mexican comes hand-inhand.

“For me to be able to celebrate that very specific space that I live in … It’s important to me that places, like my place of work, will celebrate it with the same enthusiasm, right, that any other celebration would (get),” they said.

Thornton’s celebration aims for more than 1,000 attendees

Over the years, Thornton’s celebration of Day of the Dead has grown to the point of attracting hundreds of attendees.

Alisa Zimmerman, the manager of the City of Thornton’s Arts and Culture Division, said the celebration started as a small gathering in the arts and culture center.

This year, for the seventh annual celebration, the event will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Nov. 4 at McAllister Park Center, located at 750 W. 96th Ave. Zimmerman said it is important for any city to recognize the diversity and richness of its community.

“There is a very large, robust Hispanic community in Thornton — in original Thornton, which is the southern part of Thornton,” Zimmerman said.

By 2019, the event attracted a few hundred attendees, she said. To accommodate the bigger crowd, the celebration is now held at McAllister Park, which has a building on it that was previously a church.

“That proved to be the perfect, you know, home for this event as it continues to grow, and it’s both an indoor and outdoor thing,” she said. “We love the fact that it’s still very near to our core community that loves to celebrate this event.”

Last year, about 700 people attended, she said. The year before that, an estimated 1,000 people showed up.

This year, the goal is to exceed 1,000 attendees, she said.

Attendees this year can expect music and dance performances, as well as face painting, an art market and a costume contest.

The celebration this year will also feature the Butterfly Pavilion. Zimmerman said the pavilion wanted to display its monarch butterfly exhibit because monarchs migrate to Mexico and some people believe that monarchs represent the dead coming back to visit the living.

The Mexican Cultural Center will also create a beautiful ofrenda, Zimmerman said. People are able to bring photos to place on the ofrenda.

“The wonderful part, for me, is it’s so multigenerational,” she said. “I think Day of the Dead represents a wonderful opportunity to gather people together.”

When asked what advice she has for newcomers, Zimmerman said, “Come with a sense of discovery and curiosity about what this holiday is.”

Museo de las Américas to host a procession

Museo de las Américas is the premier Latin American art museum in the Rocky Mountain region, said Executive Director Claudia Moran.

This year, Museo will host a Day of the Dead celebration starting at 5 p.m. Nov. 3 at 861 Santa Fe Drive in Denver.

The free event will feature a community procession honoring loved ones from 6-7 p.m.

This procession is a collaborative effort between Museo, the Art District on Santa Fe, Chicano Humanities and Arts Council, and the Office of Councilwoman Jamie Torres, according to a news release.

The procession will commence in the parking lot of Su Teatro at 721 Santa Fe Drive around 5:45 p.m. and will head on a route that will conclude at Museo de las Américas.

The celebration will feature an altar, a dance performance, local vendors, sugar skull decorating and a Catrina costume contest.

Sheridan Library’s exhibition, community program

In addition to its community celebration, Museo de las Américas is recognizing Day of the Dead through its traveling exhibition that is on display at the Sheridan Library, located at 3425 W. Oxford Ave., until Nov. 5.

“The purpose of the exhibit is to use art and artifacts to explain the history and meaning of Día (de) los Muertos (Day of the Dead),” said Laura Beacom, the curator of collections at Museo.

Creating the Day of the Dead traveling exhibition was by demand, Beacom said. She started building it over the pandemic, and it was first displayed last year at a library in Wheat Ridge.

The objects on display are something people would not normally be able to see if not for the traveling exhibition, she said.

“It’s just really important for people to have artwork that reflects their own history and culture,” Beacom said. “And for people who don’t know anything about it, it’s important for them to be able to learn about it.”

It is important that Sheridan Library celebrates Day of the Dead because the Sheridan community is diverse and strongly Latine, said Kathleen Robertson, supervisor at Sheridan Library. Latine is a gender-neutral form of the word Latino.

“I think it’s important to hang on to cultural traditions,” Robertson said.

This year will be the second that the community group Sheridan Rising Together for Equity will host a Day of the Dead celebration at Sheridan Library.

“We had never seen such a well-attended event at this library,” Robertson said about last year’s event.

This year’s celebration will include performances by dance groups, an exhibition of the altar of the dead, a Catrinas costume contest, and bread and hot chocolate.

The evolution of Day of the Dead

Day of the Dead has its origins in the rituals practiced by Indigenous peoples of the Americas, such as the Aztecs, according to The Mexican Museum.

Museo de las Américas said the Aztecs used skeletons as a tribute to the deity Mictecacihuatl, the goddess of death.

According to History.com, once the Spanish conquered the Aztec empire, the Catholic Church changed when the Indigenous celebrations honoring the dead occurred. This made the celebrations fall on the Catholic dates of Nov. 1, which is All Saints’ Day, and Nov. 2, which is All Souls’ Day. Claudia Moran, executive director at Museo, said that from her understanding, there are two primary areas in Mexico where Day of the Dead is celebrated in a very traditional way — Mexico City and the Mexican state of Michoacán.

Moran, who is from Guadalajara, Mexico, said she has visited Pátzcuaro, a city in Michoacán, many times, as her aunt lives there. There is a lake in the area that has cemeteries around it, she said.

People bring large amounts of flowers into the cemeteries where their loved ones are buried, creating beautiful displays. At night, people bring food and stay up late, sharing stories and reflecting.

“It’s just a moment to remember your loved ones who have already passed.

It’s a moment of reflection. It’s a moment of understanding,” Moran said.

When Moran visited the area as a young girl, the celebrations were smaller, she said.

“Now, it’s like you can barely get into the town,” she said, explaining tourists across the world come to see the celebration.

Day of the Dead celebrations have become more popular in the last 10-15 years, she said. She thinks part of the reason is due to movies such as the 2015 James Bond movie, “Spectre,” and the 2017 Disney movie, “Coco.”

She has even seen a change where she grew up in Guadalajara.

“When I was (a) little girl, you wouldn’t see anything around anywhere in the city, in Guadalajara. Now, you could go to cemeteries in Guadalajara.

Now, you can go to … all these celebrations in the little towns,” she said. “It’s a phenomenon.”

Elements of an ofrenda

An altar and its offerings — called an “ofrenda” in Spanish — are an invitation to deceased loved ones “to be with us in spirit and to share what they liked in life,” according to The Center on Colfax.

There are four basic elements needed in an ofrenda: earth, water, wind and fire.

Earth is represented with food. Sandra Zapata, director of youth services at The Center on Colfax, said it has to be food that the loved one liked and would want to come back for.

“Pan de muerto,” which means bread of the dead, is a sweet bread that often is part of an ofrenda, according to The Mexican Museum.

In addition to food, there is often salt and water, Zapata said.

“The nourishment itself — it’s because they’ve been through a long journey,” Zapata said. “We want them to feel celebrated and want (them) to be full.”

Wind is represented by the movement of objects such as “papel picado,” which is colorful tissue paper cut into designs.

“It’s very easy to break, and it’s a reminder that life itself is very easy to break and it’s very easy for us to lose it,” Zapata said about papel picado. “So, we have to be thankful and we have to be grateful that we are still here.”

Candles represent fire, offering light that is believed by some to help spirits find their way to meet their family and friends, according to The Center on Colfax.

tween the two worlds, Zapata said.

Sugar skulls symbolize loved ones who have passed away, according to The Mexican Museum. Sometimes, they have the name of the deceased person inscribed on the forehead.

Flowers called “cempasúchil,” or marigolds, are always on ofrendas, Zapata said.

“That’s a very big representation of this time of year when these flowers bloom and we can use them to bring beauty into the space,” they said.

Photos of loved ones are also placed on ofrendas, Zapata said.

Not a ‘Mexican Halloween’

For people interested in celebrating Day of the Dead for the first time, Zapata said it is important to look at the traditions and be mindful of honoring the holiday.

“Sometimes, it gets almost, like, tangled in Halloween. And those two things are so different,” Zapata said. “I just want to make sure that folks are mindful of what our traditions are versus something like Halloween, which is not culturally relevant to Day of the Dead just because it’s a different tradition, and it’s a different type of celebration.”

In the City of Thornton, Alisa Zimmerman said the city tries its best to make sure its event is not looked at as a Mexican Halloween.

“We purposefully don’t schedule it on the same weekend or near Halloween,” Zimmerman said.

“And that’s worked well for us because then people know that it’s actually focused strictly on this holiday — remembering people’s deceased friends and relatives.”

Claudia Moran, of Museo de las Américas, said it is important that people research the holiday.

“It is a very unique type of celebration,” she said. “You cannot compare it with anything else.”

“It’s actually a culmination of a lot of traditions that have been combined going back hundreds of years,” Beacom said.

Beacom said she likes that Day of the Dead reminds people that death is part of life.

“It’s not to be feared,” she said. “The nature of love in our souls is eternal, and the material world and the spiritual world … exist at the same place, at the same time.”

Zapata’s favorite part of Day of the Dead is hearing people’s stories about the people they have loved and lost.

“There’s such a connection in telling stories and telling other people’s stories and making sure that the folks that maybe have passed are not forgotten,” Zapata said. “Passing those traditions of talking about the people that we love kind of keeps them around longer, even if other folks didn’t meet them. It’s about the history that we don’t want to forget about.”

CodeNext referendum efforts fails to meet deadline “The City of Englewood supports the right of citizen referendum, to challenge by petition legislation adopted by the city,” Harguth said. “The legislation subject to potential referendum was passed on September 25 at 10:10 pm, and the city is interpreting its municipal code and charter in such a way that gives referendum supporters maximum possible time to obtain signatures and submit a referendum petition.”

City Clerk Stephaine Carlile said she received an addendum to the filing via a confirmation email from the petitioners on Oct. 19.

All four petitioners were not new to this petition process as Suppes and Kettelhut led efforts to recall multiple council members over their support of CodeNext. Councilmember Cheryl Wink abruptly resigned in July on the day her recall election date would have been set, but the recall efforts against three other members failed after months of campaigning.

Additionally, Kozacek and Williams, who share an address, were at the center of the fight to stop the Sam’s Automotive development, where the situation is at a standstill while a lawsuit they filed against the city plays out. Williams is also an unopposed Englewood School Board candidate.

Suppes and Kettelhut have not returned requests for comment.

After four Englewood residents submitted a referendum petition in mid-October to prevent the city’s CodeNext ordinance from going into effect, they did not submit any petition signatures by the deadline on Oct. 26.

Chris Harguth, communications director for the city, said in an email that the “referendum petition to protest Ordinance No. 46 was not filed with the city clerk’s office.”

“Per Charter § 39 ‘all ordinances shall take effect thirty days after publication following final passage,’ Ordinance No. 46, Series of 2023 takes effect today,” Harguth said. Ordinance No. 46, or CodeNext, updates the city’s Unified Development Code to allow more accessory dwelling units, limit parking requirements, and make other changes for higher residential density.

Those who filed the referendum petition were Kurt Suppes, Sandra Kettelhut, Gary Kozacek and Davon Williams, who had until 10:09 p.m. on Oct. 26 to submit 1,466 valid signatures.

Initially it was thought that the deadline was Oct. 25, but Harguth said the city wanted to ensure the petitioners had as much time as possible to submit the petition.

For second year, domestic violence deaths in Colorado reach all-time high

At least 94 people, from 8 months to 61 years old, died in Colorado in 2022 as a result of domestic violence, according to a report released by the Attorney General’s Office.

It was the second time in two years that the number of domestic violence fatalities set an all-time high in Colorado, exceeding the previous record of 91.

At least 39 people were killed last year by their current or former intimate partners and 22 were bystanders, such as family members, coworkers or neighbors who were with the victim or tried to intervene, the report said.

The number of fatalities was nearly 1.5 times higher than the average number of deaths in the state since 2016, when the Colorado Domestic

Violence Fatality Review Board began tracking them.

The number of bystanders killed was “extraordinarily high” compared with years past, showing the threat extends beyond domestic violence victims and into the community, the Attorney General’s Office said.

Among the deaths were six children under the age of 16, including a 5-year-old who was sleeping in an apartment when a fire was set nearby in a domestic dispute. The five other children died from gunshot wounds after separate attacks, the report said.

Two police officers were also shot to death when responding to domestic violence incidents, the report said.

The report is a “sobering reminder” of the work needed to combat domestic violence across the state, Attorney General Phil Weiser said in a news release. “The numbers are alarming and should catalyze action. This re-

port provides a stark reminder that domestic violence continues to be a serious threat, primarily to women, and all Coloradans must work toward greater gender equality and more robust efforts to prevent domestic violence.”

The board, which was set up to review data and make policy recommendations, suggested a wider use of assessment tools in organizations that work directly with domestic violence survivors to better help adults and children who are affected by domestic violence and understand the safety risks. The board also recommended developing a pilot program through the Colorado Bureau of Investigation that would foster a relationship between prosecutors, law enforcement and the defense bar to help ensure Colorado’s firearm relinquishment statutes are enforced, the report said.

oration between the state’s Maternal Mortality Prevention Program, Child Fatality Review Baord and the Office of Suicide Prevention, the report said, noting the intersection between each entity’s work and the potential to analyze domestic violence fatalities in a more comprehensive way.

Consistent with previous reports, firearms were the leading cause of death among domestic violence fatalities in 2022, accounting for 86% of deaths. Ninety-seven percent of the victims were female and 95% of the perpetrators were male.

Castle Rock man searches 24 days for lost dog

For 24 days, one Castle Rock dog survived rough terrain, faced bears, coyotes and rattlesnakes, and during that time, owner Derek Brendlinger dedicated his life to reuniting with his dog, even if it meant exhausting all his vacation time.

Countless individuals, which included drone experts who flew thermal drones in their free time, dedicated themselves to search for the dog named Monica.

But Monica’s road to recovery has not been without challenges.

Brendlinger was on his way home from visiting family in Utah when he got a call from his mom that his boxer had gotten out and was missing.

“So I got back and then started to search pretty much instantly,” said Brendlinger.

Brendlinger’s home backs up to an open space in which the Red Hawk Ridge Golf Course also backs up to.

The terrain also consisted of the Quarry Mesa.

The first night, when Brendlinger was calling Monica’s name, he heard coyotes howling and he immediately thought she was in trouble.

As he kept calling her name, he heard what he describes as “a violent dog cry” that only got louder. Brendlinger then ran up the mesa and broke his foot in three places.

Brendlinger made a Nextdoor post about Monica, which reached nearly 48,000 views.

Help soon came as Monica’s adoption agency, HO-BO Boxer Rescue sprang into action, hanging up flyers

and actively searched the area.

Jon Holland, the superintendent of Red Hawk Ridge Golf Course, didn’t know Brendlinger but saw the flyers of his missing dog and took action.

As the search moved into its second week, Brendlinger called the golf course to ask if they could assist in the search.

Simultaneously, a woman named Amy Johnson, who volunteers to rescue dogs, contacted Brendlinger and wanted to help.

Game cameras were set up in hopes to narrow down Monica’s patterns and the cameras would send photos to their cell phones.

“Through this whole thing, she would kind of disappear for a couple of days and then there would be a sighting of her,” said Holland.

It became evident to them that Monica would hide during the day and venture out at night to find food and water.

During the time of the months-long search, there was an aggressive coyote that was harassing dog walkers during the day, said Holland. They even found bear tracks and Monica’s tracks in the same sand trap on the golf course as there was a bear roaming around.

“We were quite concerned about her safety,” said Holland. “But she proved to be quite the survivor out there.”

A smoker was donated to them so they could smoke meat to entice Monica and keep her close.

As weeks passed, the search became more intense and the lack of sightings made it challenging to remain positive, said Holland.

Brendlinger would spend nights sleeping on the golf course and drive around until the early morning.

The Castle Rock Police Department pulled him over on multiple occasions as Brenglinger believed they thought he was casing neighborhoods. However, the police also aided in the search.

There was one situation where Brendlinger was able to get in front of Monica, but Holland witnessed her struggle to recognize him.

Lost dogs can often develop a condition known as “lizard brain,” said Holland. This is when their overly stimulated brain sees everything as a threat and they go into survival mode.

Leading up to the day they found her, they went four days with a sighting, but just after 6 p.m. on Sept. 6, a game camera captured Monica feeding from one of the kibble stations.

Brendlinger was at work when Monica had gone into the dog trap.

As Holland, Johnson and another volunteer approached Monica, she

was barking at them. They brought her down to the maintenance barn where they let her out and she ran around a couple of times.

The second Derek arrived, Monica jumped into his arms.

With her ribs visible, Monica had lost about 21 pounds, which made it difficult for her to adjust to a normal diet.

She also had a large bump on her head, a gash on her head and other scratches.

Since reconnecting with her owner, Monica has been exhibiting “resource guarding” behavior, which is common among dogs who have experienced traumatic events. In addition to being protective over her toys, Brendlinger thinks she has post traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. “She barks at literally nothing,” said Brendlinger. “She doesn’t like to go outside at night.

Brendlinger and Holland are moved by the outpouring of support from the community in aiding her rescue.

“I have never in my life seen somebody look for their dog as hard as Derek did,” said Holland. “When you see somebody investing literally everything they have to find their animal and having that kind of compassion for their animal… there’s nothing you can do but help them.”

Since Monica’s rescue, Brendlinger has gone on other dog rescues with Johnson.

Additionally, a GoFundMe was created for the recovery team that aided in Monica’s rescue.

Holland and Brendlinger encourage others to support volunteers who work in dog rescues as these nonprofits require assistance with game cameras, kibble, traps, flyers and more.

If measure 3K passes, the city will be permitted to use the revenues it has already received from the 3A sales tax collection.

The city would still use the funds for the purpose already approved by voters in 2021, which is capital improvements.

These funds would go towards projects such as neighborhood street maintenance, street congestion and improved capacity projects, street and bridge safety improvements, building replacement, pedestrian safety infrastructure, asphalt and drainage repairs and upgrades and more.

In early October, the city council passed a resolution in favor of voting “yes” on measure 3K. “City Council wishes to carry out the will of the voters, the intentions of 3A and help secure the peace, safety and welfare of our citizens,” the council’s resolution states.

The Littleton Business Chamber also supports the ballot measure.

“Vote ‘Yes’ to continue funding current capital projects: improvements to (the) city’s roads, bridges, sidewalks and infrastructure,” the chamber’s website says.

Pat Dunahay, co-president of the chamber, said it’s sad the city did not foresee this financial situation, but he still supports the city keeping the extra revenue.

“(They’re) guidelines that say, ‘If you’re building a road that looks like this, here’s the requirements – it has to have this much sidewalk, it has to have this much bike lane, if you build a bike lane, here’s how you

have to do it to do it safely,’” he said.

Since some of these guidelines are general or for larger cities, Traquair said Littleton could use them as a starting point and adapt them to fit the city’s specific priorities and needs.

He also said it would be beneficial for the city to hire extra public works staff members who are specifically focused on neighborhood street

safety and traffic.

Josie Haggerty, who founded the group Littleton Social Cycle with Traquair, said the issue with the city’s current infrastructure is rooted in car culture, which is not unique to Littleton.

“Littleton was built to accommodate these big vehicles in the 40s, 50s, 60s,” she said. “Cars have only gotten faster and people are so de-

pendent on them for transportation … That is a big change that needs to happen, just as a society, to realize that there are a lot of people who can’t drive.”

Age, disability and economic situations are some factors that play a role in people’s ability or desire to drive.

LPS board decides not to change school boundaries

After a months-long demographic study, the Littleton Public Schools Board of Education opted to make no changes to elementary and middle school boundaries.

On Oct. 26, the board approved the recommendation of the Long-Range Planning Committee, which had been charged with offering several options after a demographic assessment of the district’s enrollment numbers.

“Our number one recommendation is (for) you to make no adjustments to the elementary school boundaries at this time,” said Jack Reutzel, chair of the Long-Range Planning Committee, in an Oct. 12 presentation.

The committee also recommended no changes to middle school boundaries.

“I want to emphasize that does not mean you don’t do anything,” Reutzel said. “There are other things that we think you ought to do – but we don’t think physical boundaries are the answer here.”

Why a demographic study?

Last November, the Long-Range Planning Committee, recommended options for solving enrollment issues at Dr. Justina Ford Elementary School.

At the time, the school was over capacity by about 50 students.

Based on the committee’s recom-

mendation, the Board of Education decided to pause and gather additional real-time data before determining whether to change school boundaries.

Since then, the district contracted a demographer to gather and examine data including: historical and correlated birth counts, enrollment trend data, real estate market and interest rate effects on growth, regional trends in neighborhood and charter school enrollment, generational trends and more.

The demographer also examined real-time student data in the Ford and surrounding catchments, which are the areas that determine which students attend which schools.

During this process, the committee learned that enrollment at Ford was smaller than the district had anticipated at the beginning of the year, Reutzel said.

In addition, the trends based on current data forecast a gradual decline in Ford’s enrollment, which would bring its capacity down to the desired size in the next five years, according to the committee’s presentation.

The demographer also evaluated enrollment at the middle schools, where some buildings are underpopulated, committee chair Jack Reutzel said.

Since the middle schools are not at capacity, Reutzel said boundary changes would likely not make a sig-

nificant difference in populations because many families would open-enroll their students to the schools they were originally in.

During community engagement on the topic, many community members pushed for consistency in their children’s place of education.

Residents said they do not want neighborhoods to be split up or pit against one another. They said boundary changes can have negative social and emotional impacts on students.

Board comments When deciding to make no changes at this time, President Angela Christensen said the board listened to what it heard from the committee and the community, which is that boundary changes are disruptive and need to be worth it.

“Are these larger class sizes so overwhelming and detrimental to students that it’s worth it to move children yet again, fracture neighborhoods and disrupt school cultures to solve them?” she said. “The board heard and respects the committee’s recommendations and the community’s feedback regarding the emotional toll boundary changes place on students and families.”

School.

He said he thought the board did not give the committee enough information when they were faced with making recommendations last year.

This time, Reichardt said, he did not think the board gave the committee enough time.

As time goes on, he said he thinks this problem will require more attention.

“Unfortunately, I don’t think we’re done,” he said, adding that enrollment in Littleton is dynamic right now.

“Our ability to peer into the future is not as good as any of us would like,” he said. “I’m just not confident we have as nuanced of tools as our community would like us to have. And I hope the community is patient with us, or with the future board, as they navigate that.”

Secretary Andrew Graham said the problems of overcrowding and underutilizing schools in the district will not disappear.

Many board members said they were in favor of keeping some form of a Long-Range Planning Committee as a permanent group to continue reviewing enrollment and boundary challenges within the district.

On Nov. 16, Superintendent Todd Lambert will present ideas from district staff regarding how to manage enrollment problems while maintaining the schools’ current boundaries.

Ellingboe retires after decades of sharing love of arts with readers

Sonya Ellingboe, a longtime voice in the Denver area’s art and entertainment world, never let age be an obstacle in the days preceding the 2020 pandemic shutdowns, as she made her way to her office in Englewood each weekday with her walking stick and bright-colored necklaces.

Ellingboe, with her signature bright laugh and engaging conversational style, would sit at her window-view desk to write stories about whatever show or art exhibit she had recently seen and to put together a weekly column that brought readers into the world of culture around the Denver metro area.

From the time the pandemic shutdowns began, she continued her work from home as she shared her

stories with readers of south metro newspapers.

Ellingboe, a Littleton resident since 1956, recently announced her retirement from Colorado Community Media.

Ellingboe She has played a part in her beloved art world through her articles since at least 1989, when she was with what was then a one-paper operation known as the Littleton Times.

“Sonya has been a treasure to the arts community,” said Linda Shapley, publisher of Colorado Community Media. “She will be missed, but none more than by the dedicated readers who for decades respected and trusted her articles to open their worlds to beauty and creativity.”

Ellingboe, 93, talked about her love of art, her writing career, and her devotion to the Littleton community in a recent interview with Colorado Community Media. She recalled how she got into newspaper writing, starting with an editor who had been with the Littleton Independent but was not happy with the newspaper’s direction and decided to start the Littleton Times, bringing Ellingboe with her.

Ellingboe joked about having a problem with putting too many commas in her articles and having to adjust from writing academic papers to writing articles for the general public.

Ellingboe said she loves the arts, wanted to ask questions and learn more about local government, and happily dived into the journalism world.

“When I was young, I went to summer drama classes and while I did not want to perform, I knew it was something I wanted to do,” she said.

“I always enjoyed going to plays and the entertainment world.”

In her home on Oct. 27, with a black cat sleeping soundly on her lap, Ellingboe spoke fondly about her career and experiences, surrounded by paintings done by her family, herself, and a mountain of books in various spots showing her love of learning and academics.

Eventually, the Littleton Times was bought by Jerry and Ann Healey, who said they owe much of their success to Ellingboe because she was there to connect them throughout the community and even provided office space for them to use in her bookstore off Curtice Street.

Ellingboe managed the bookstore in Littleton for 16 years.

Ann recalled being new to Littleton as she attributed their success to Ellingboe’s willingness to help them.

The Healeys eventually purchased the Littleton Independent, growing into what became Colorado Community Media with 24 community newspapers along the Front Range.

In 2021, the couple sold Colorado Community Media to the Colorado News Conservancy.

Ann said there was a key group of Littleton residents who loved their local newspaper and Ellingboe played a big role in connecting the Healeys with the right people.

“We quickly became involved in the community,” Ann said. “(Ellingboe’s) historical and background knowledge of Littleton was endless.

She was involved in everything. She has always been kind, patient, and really fun. She was always so interested in culture.”

Besides thinking of Ellingboe for her bright-colored jewelry choices, many who have worked with her over the last few decades also treasure her as a matriarch of the Littleton community.

After hearing of her retirement, Peggy Dietz, head of the Depot Art Center in Littleton, said, “I think of Sonya as not only a lovely friend but Littleton’s own Google. She retains the living history of our community, remembering the ‘famous’, the ‘infamous’, and the everyday events. As a devoted member of the Depot Art Gallery, we always had her input and devotion. A true lover of the arts and an excellent writer.”

Chris Rotar, a former editor for Colorado Community Media, worked with Ellingboe from 2007-2021.

“Sonya’s unwavering advocacy for the metro area arts scene and the community of Littleton will likely never be duplicated,” he said. “Sonya did more than write for the newspapers. She served as an invaluable resource for her colleagues, whether it be passing along news tips or providing historical context.”

Rotar, a newcomer to Colorado in 2007, remembers his second day on the job as an editor of the south metro publications.

“We got in Sonya’s car, and she took

me on a tour around Littleton,” he said. “I quickly learned how important the community and its history are to her. Since the city isn’t geographically very big, the drive didn’t last long, but it left a lasting impression on me.”

For the Healeys, from the time they were a couple in their early 30s trying to get started, Ann said her relationship with Ellingboe developed into a strong, meaningful friendship built on admiration and respect.

“She’s had challenges at times but has always persevered,” Anne said.

“She’s an amazing woman. She is a true community pillar. It’s hard to find the words to describe how much I think of her and admire her. I am just glad our paths crossed. I just hope I can be like her when I am in my 90s.”

Former Littleton Mayor Susan Thornton said Ellingboe’s notices and reviews have strengthened both the art community and the community at large over the years.

“She has been the go-to voice for residents who don’t want to miss the latest show, opening, event, or play,” Thornton said. “Her impact on the community has been profound.”

Ellingboe said she just wanted to bring art into the communities across the Denver metro area. Looking back to when she was 7, Ellingboe said her mother, an artist, encouraged creativity and allowed young Sonya to paint and decorate her walls.

immersed in culture, traveling Europe, seeing plays, and loving all of it.

As a writer, Ellingboe said she has loved seeing the arts, culture, and entertainment world grow up around her. She said Lone Tree, Parker, and many other communities have invested in the arts, giving her more to write about as the years went on.

“As I wrote, it made me constantly on the lookout for ideas over the years,” Ellingboe said. “You gain this curiosity. You want to know how they do that. How do they make that? It spreads in all directions.”

At 93, Ellingboe said she is not able to attend shows as often as she wants but still tries to get out with her daughter when she can.

With four children, numerous grandchildren, and a growing number of great-grandchildren, Ellingboe proudly talked about instilling her love of the arts into her children, bragging about her son who currently travels the world.

from traveling as much as she would like in recent years, Ellingboe followed the example of her parents in traveling with her own children to some of her favorite places in Europe and Asia.

“I’m glad I have been lucky enough to do things like that,” she said.

However, when asked where her favorite place to travel is, Ellingboe, sticking with her love of Colorado, said she loves the western part of her state.

As she wraps up her writing career, Ellingboe said her hope is that someone else will take on the challenge and keep the art world alive as she has tried to do for so many years.

“I always wanted to help get the word out and just tell people about all these great shows,” she said. “The paper has always been supportive when I’ve worked to get people interested and caring about art. I hope Littleton and the area can stay supportive and connected in bringing art to people.”

Instead of focusing on making it possible for cars to go faster, Traquair and Haggerty said Littleton needs to focus on how to make roads safer for everyone.

Traquair highlighted car-centric aspects of road design, such as rightturns on red lights, which was started in many states in the 1970s to reduce idling and save gas.

“The ultimate goal is to make the cars go faster,” he said. “What we want is to change that in the city to say, ‘Cars are going fast enough – you did it, you did a great job – but now we want to change the goal.’ And rather than focusing purely on, ‘How can we make cars get through the streets faster?’ we want to say, ‘How can we make it safer for all people to use it – people on bikes, people on wheelchairs, people walking?”

Traquair said pedestrian deaths are not only a Littleton problem. These deaths are on the rise nationwide, as reported by the New York Times.

He and his fellow advocates are not trying to assign blame to the city, but instead trying to help find solutions, he said.

“This is not a Littleton-only issue. And it’s not something that’s caused by the people in the current city council and the staff engineers,” Traquair said. “But they can fix it.

They didn’t cause the problem, but they can fix it.”

Traquair and Haggerty worked with other members of Littleton Social Cycle and Vibrant Littleton to organize a rally for safer streets on Oct. 28.

“We need to make a public stance

that, as a community, we’re tired of seeing this,” Haggerty said.

Community members laid down their bicycles in front of Littleton Public Schools headquarters to call for fundamental changes to community policy around road design and safety.

The city’s plan

For Mayor Kyle Schlachter, the recent crash hit close to home. His son is a seventh grader who bikes to Euclid Middle School each day and knew the student who died recently.

Schlachter said he also uses a bike as transportation regularly.

Schlachter has been advocating for safer bike and pedestrian infrastructure for years, both as mayor and as a city councilmember before that. He said he is listening to the community advocates calling for change.

“I hear them, I’ve been listening to them for the last couple of years here, and I will continue to advocate for the policies that they are pushing for,” he said.

Schlachter said he supports the idea of protected bike lanes, which he has heard suggested from members of the community. He said he would especially like to see protected bike lanes on routes where kids bike to school, like Windermere, Elati and Caley.

Before the Oct. 28 rally, city staff was starting to reprioritize its work to begin accelerating plans for bike and pedestrian safety, City Manager Jim Becklenberg said.

He said a priority for 2024 will be creating a new bicycle and pedestrian master plan.

“As soon as our new city council is seated, we’re planning one of their first study sessions to focus on this

topic,” he said. “Specifically, to really articulate for us the vision and what that new priority for bicycle and pedestrian safety looks like as we go forward.”

The city’s 2019 Transportation Master Plan included more than 70 projects for bike and pedestrian safety, of which 34 have been funded, planned or installed, Becklenberg said.

But the city is aspiring for a new level of bike safety which will build on this work, Becklenberg said.

“This is something I’ve been advocating for,” Schlachter said. “I think there’s a lot of opportunities to improve the bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure in the city. And I think this, unfortunately, is an event that is going to hopefully spur some even more dramatic investments into that infrastructure.”

First steps towards the new bicycle and pedestrian master plan were already in the works before recent deaths, Schlachter said. But now, the city is taking an approach with more urgency.

Becklenberg said the city plans to assess design ideas from around the country and will likely have a community forum in the coming months to hear what citizens want as they create a new plan for bike and pedestrian safety.

Some advocates have said the city has hesitated in the past to take rapid steps towards safer infrastructure because of costs and lack of equipment for plowing.

Becklenberg said the city would assess these costs as it faces the challenge of protecting cyclists at a higher level than it has historically.

Acknowledging that many people rely on cars and do not want to be inconvenienced by changes, Schlachter

said it is important to remember the consequences of this topic.

“There has to be a kind of mindset change that we are going to prioritize the safety and the lives of people that are on bicycles and walking around our community,” he said. “I think having a priority of people’s lives over being able to drive as quickly and as fast as people want is important, and a sacrifice that I think that we should make.”
