Centennial residents will likely see a question on the November ballot to add a city lodging tax, though it is unclear what the proposed tax percentage will be.
The recently passed climate change, tax and health care bill, gun reform, national security and the need for respect in politics were among the topics discussed during an Aug. 22 town hall with Rep. Jason Crow, a Democrat in Colorado’s 6th Congressional District.
Although the city committed to participating in the election, the specific language for the ballot question has not been approved. The council is expected to discuss the issue further on Sept. 6. If the council does not approve the measure, the city would be liable for some costs, according to the staff report.

On Aug. 15, the Centennial City Council voted 8-1 to approve an intergovernmental agreement with Arapahoe County for participation in the Nov. 8 coordinated election. Councilmember Don Sheehan was the lone vote against the measure.

“I love these very much. I get as much out of these as I hope you’re gonna get out of it today,” Crow said. “But I’m really excited for this one in particular because this has been a slog of a Congress, Rep.

From mining town to bustling urban center of the high plains, the metropolitan area has transformed in its roughly 160 years as a city, with an expanding web of suburban communities creating a mosaic of character. Centennial housing update #10 Centennial’s Housing Study update #10 is Strategy 101: Bonus Density, and we do citizens think. Bonus density allows more housing units to be built on a specific site than would otherwise be allowed by the applicable zone district. Bonus density is implemented through changes to required zoning standards that allow the construction of more building area when affordable housing is included in the project.Learn more about Bonus Density strategy and tell us your thoughts at nialco.gov/housing.https://www.centenTrash can ashes start house fire At 3:45 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 29, South Metro Fire Rescue received multiple calls reporting a residential structure fire on S Himalaya Circle in Arapahoe County. According to the social medi post, callers described seeing active flames on the outside of the house. The first arriving units confirmed there was a working fire on the side of the home with extension to the second story and attic space. Crews quickly pulled an inch and 3/4 hose, secured a water supply, made entry, and completed a search of the first and second floors. The fire was declared under control in approximately 35 minutes, according to SMFR.Noinjuries were reported and the SMFR Fire Marshal’s Office determined the fire was likely caused by ashes in a trash can.

He added: “And we know it’s a critical moment for us to make sure that teachers and nurses and firefighters have places to live in our communities.”Themeasure would not directly raise taxes. Instead, it sets aside a tenth of a percent of the income taxes the state is already collecting. However, it would have the effect of reducing TABOR refunds by the same amount, too — meaning it will have a cost to taxpayers in some years.“Initiative 108 is a bad idea. There’s nothing ‘affordable’ about taking $300 million of our TABOR tax refunds for this flawed housing measure,” tweeted Michael Fields, president of the conservative Advance Colorado Institute. Johnston estimated the measure could fund 10,000 affordable housing units per year. That’s compared to a deficit of more than 100,000 homes for the state’s poorest people — and an overall market shortage of more than 300,000 homes.
• Debt financing for modular and factory-based housing builders. It would be nearly a sixfold increase in the state’s dedicated affordable housing funds, which are currently about $50 million per year, Johnston said. The state is also in the middle of spending about $400 million of federal funds on housing across the state, but Johnston said that wouldn’t be enough. “You can’t build an affordable housing supply with one-time funds. They have to be long term. They have to be stable and they have to be significant,” he said. The program would be focused on families making 60 percent or less of an area’s median income, with some flexibility. It also includes incentives for governments to reduce the bureaucratic red tape that can slow down affordable projects.

The measure will only go into effect if it’s approved by a majority of voters in the 2022 election. If so, it would create a statewide affordable housing fund for purposes including:Land banking. Governments and nonprofit developers would get loans to buy land for future projects. The loans are forgiven if affordable housing projects are started within a decade.•Grants and financing for low- and middle-income multi-family housing, and gap financing for projects that qualify for affordable housing tax credits.

The “Make Colorado Affordable” proposal would require the state to spend a certain amount — almost $270 million in its first full year — on affordable housing.

“I used weapons of war at war, and I had them used against me. And I know what that looks like,” said Crow. He said when he went hunting, he did not take an AR-15, and when he went to Iraq and Afghanistan, he did not take his hunting rifle.
Bipartisanship and need for respect Being bipartisan is something Crow takes seriously, he said. He noted a report by the Lugar Center and the McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown University listed him as number 11 on the bipartisan index rankings for 2021 for the U.S. House of Representatives.
According to Georgetown University’s website, the bipartisan index “measures how often a member of Congress introduces bills that attract co-sponsors from the other party, and how often they in turn co-sponsor a bill introduced from across the Bipartisanshipaisle.” is the way to get legislation done, Crow said, emphasizing the importance of respect in politics.“Theproblems facing our country are complicated. Governing is hard.
Crow said in recent years, audits for millionaires have decreased more than 70% and basic services for residents trying to get their tax returns have gone down. Last year, four out of five customer service calls for the IRS went unanswered, heThesaid.bill will help increase enforcement to find those who are not paying their taxes and increase services so people can get responses from the IRS, he said. Crow said the legislation will also reduce the cost of healthcare. For example, the bill will extend enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies for another three years and will allow Medicare to negotiate prices for some drugs, he said. It also caps Medicare Part D out-of-pocket drug costs at $2,000 a year for seniors and individuals with disabilities on Medicare, starting in 2025. The bill includes approximately $370 billion in investments addressing climate change, according to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s fact sheet.“It’s going to make investments in clean energy, so we can actually address the climate crisis,” Crow said. He said the bill will help promote Colorado’s economy because clean energy is one of the fastest growing sectors of the state’s economy and employs thousands of Coloradans.
Legislating is hard. There are unintended consequences of legislation all the time,” he said. “But what that means is, we have to find ways to respect each other.”
“There’s a lot of fear mongering about, you know, IRS agents beating down doors, and that’s just not what this is,” Crow said. “That’s just not what we’re looking to do. We’re looking to enforce the law. We’re looking at making sure people pay their fair share in taxes.”
“There is extremism increasing in our nation. Threats against me, threats against my colleagues,” Crow said. “You all should not tolerate elected officials at any level engaging in that irresponsible rhetoric.”“Wejust got to lower the temperature of the room and find a way to figure this out together, be collaborative and build a better society — build a better country,” he continued. “I’ll continue to show up, answer your questions, and let’s do this together.”
FROM PAGE 1 ISSUES
Crow calls Inflation Reduction Act ‘transformative’ One piece of legislation Crow highlighted during the town hall was the health care, tax and climate change bill, which Democrats have named the “Inflation Reduction Act.”Crow was among the supporters of the bill, which aims to lower health care costs, promote clean energy and increase the taxes on some corporations, according to the White House’s website. “This is really a transformative piece of legislation,” Crow said. He said the bill will reduce the federal budget deficit by an estimated $300 billion and taxes will not be raised on families earning less than $400,000 a year. “We are going to make our largest, most profitable corporations pay their fair share,” Crow said. The legislation sets a 15% minimum tax rate for companies with profits of $1 billion dollars or more, Crow said, explaining this will apply to about 150 corporations. The legislation also includes giving $80 billion to the Internal Revenue Service, otherwise known as the IRS, which raised some conspiracy theories about a “shadow army” that could “shake down small businesses with assault rifles,” according to The New York Times.
Crow said it’s important to be open and to engage with others, as well as recognize that words matter. The rhetoric of elected officials and leaders can incite violence, and he said he has been vocal against some of his colleagues and calls out when such rhetoric is used.
Crow, who voted to help pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which was the first major federal gun safety legislation passed in about 30 years, said he has had a lifelong relationship with firearms. He said he was given his first gun when he was 12 years old and has been a gun-owner for decades.
While Crow was speaking, one attendee interjected and asked, “Can we take them from you?”
“OK, well, we’ll get to your question,” Crow responded, as others in the crowd laughed. Crow continued describing his experience with guns, saying he grew up hunting and then became an Army Ranger.
For the full list of this year’s recipients, visit www.CORE.coop. there’s no doubt about it. I kind of call this the ‘Frankenstein Congress’ because when things don’t seem like they’re alive, then they’re alive.”Arecent example was the PACT Act. In July, the bill, which expands health care and benefits for veterans exposed to burn pits and other toxic substances, gained national attention when 25 senators blocked it on the day it was expected to pass the Senate.Thebill had previously passed the Senate in June by an 84-14 vote, but a technical error in the bill required another vote, according to an NPR article. The July vote ended up being 55-42, with 25 Republican senators who previously supported the bill voting against it. However, on Aug. 2, the Senate voted again, and this time passed the bill in a 86-11“Wevote.cannot overstate how important this is for my fellow veterans and brothers and sisters, of how big of a difference it’s gonna make,”
Reuters Fact Check looked into the issue and reported social media users raising these concerns “miss key context,” including that the budget is for an array of positions, not just auditors, and representatives have repeatedly said “audit scrutiny would not increase relative to recent years for those making less than $400,000.”Whenasked about the concerns, Crow said the Inflation Reduction Act is a great bill and sometimes when people are up against a good bill, they resort to fear mongering.
When asked about the status of an assault weapons ban, Crow said the House of Representatives recently passed the assault weapons ban again.“Ithas gone, like so many great ideas, to die in the Senate. That’s not for lack of support by our great senators here in Colorado, but that’s a simple function of the filibuster, where you need 60 senators to agree to any one measure,” he said.
Many in the crowd applauded and cheered in response, while a few others booed.
Crow supports assault weapons ban
Crow on national security, Ukraine Crow, who assumed office in 2019 and is running for re-election in November against -Steve Monahan, said he currently serves on three committees in Congress — the House Small Business Committee, the House Armed Services Committee and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. “My committees are really a reflection of my priorities in Congress and the things that are important to this community,” Crow said. “My adult life has been dedicated to preserving the national security of our country. And I started my public service career in uniform and served three combat tours in Iraq andAfterAfghanistan.”beingasked about U.S. involvement in Ukraine, Crow said the issue is something he spends a lot of time working on in the intelligence committee and the armed services committee.“Ibelieve in supporting Ukraine and making sure that they’re in a position to win and defend their homes and their democracy,” Crow said. “But we cannot allow this to disrupt the international economy.” Crow said he has visited Ukraine twice in the last year, and the things the Russian military is doing are horrific and has to stop. However, he said he believes firmly against perpetual war and does not think the U.S. should fight the war nor put a no fly zone in place.
“And the reason is because the weapon matters. They’re designed to do very, very different things, and they’re both very good at what they’re designed to do,” he said. “Those weapons of war — and they are, they were designed by and for the Department of Defense to go to war — don’t belong on our streets.”
Crow said.

More than a month has passed since Colorado Community Media requested release of body camera footage from Englewood police officers involved in a July 24 shooting that left one unarmed man dead.Matthew Neal Mitchell, 22, was shot and killed as police engaged in a shootout with his brother — 29-year-old Phillip L. Blankenship — who was arrested at the scene and charged July 29 with attempted first-degree murder. In an Aug. 5 ruling, Arapahoe County Court Judge Kelly Ann Lafave sided with Blankenship’s defense team, which requested the footage not be publicly released.
BY ROBERT TANN RTANN@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
“This motion is predicated on Mr. Blankenship’s state and federal constitutional rights to due process, and a fair and impartial trial by a fair and impartial jury,” wrote Megan A. Ring, a Colorado state public defender. Eric Ross, spokesperson for the 18th Judicial District — which is investigating the July 24 shooting — said the footage “will likely be part of the trial, so after it physically airs in a courtroom, there’s less of an argument to continue the ‘blocking’ of its release.” A trial date has not been set, Ross said, but Blankenship is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Sept. 21. Ross said the judge’s ruling does not mean footage “won’t ever be released or available” but that it’s “temporarily blocked from release right now.”
Jeff Roberts, executive director for the Colorado Freedom of Information Coalition, said withholding the footage, at least until a trial, is “the closest thing to not releasing it.” There’s still a tremendous public interest in body cam footage when there’s a police shooting,” Roberts said. “In situations like this, you want to get as close to the truth of what happened, and the body cam footage is a vital record for Englewoodthat.”Police Chief Sam

The initiative stems from bipartisan legislation signed in May, co-sponsored by state Senators Sonya Jaquez Lewis and Bob Rankin, along with State Rep. Kyle Mullica, in the form of Senate Bill 226. The bill was implemented to channel more funding to the development of healthcare education to guide Coloradans towards in-demand and well-paying healthcare careers. “(These jobs) pay good, and often, students have opportunities to move into management in these different fields,” Polis said. ”We will only increase our healthcare needs as our population grows older, and we want to make sure we have the caregivers and people with the right training to 27,000 openings for certified nursing assistants (CNAs) in the state,” said Paccione, who was appointed to her position by Polis. “So we’re encouraging students to get started with these entry-level positions and to take advantage to earn a credential in their (chosen) healthcare profession for free.”
Gov. Jared Polis announced the Care Forward Colorado program Aug. 24, an initiative that makes community college and technical programs free for aspiring healthcare professionals across the state. During the press conference, Polis was joined by Lt. Gov. Dianne Primavera, administrators from the Colorado Community College System (CCCS), students who will benefit from the program and community members from Arapahoe Community College (ACC).

As a main source of drinking water for more than 30,000 people, Ry said there are numerous benefits to enclosing the open sections of the ditch, which runs water into the Charles Allen Water Treatment Plant in Englewood.
Ry said the project will help protect the water from contamination from street runoff, allow the ditch to be used for supply year-round and “provide a better product to our customers.”Still,Ryhas heard from historic preservation groups about concerns with covering the ditch, though portions of it will be left open past the treatment plant, he said. “I can understand that there’s a historic value to this infrastructure and it’s a current day water supply system … so it’s balancing those two things,” Ry said. Larry Borger, a member of Historic Littleton, Inc., said keeping the ditch open in Littleton and Englewood will serve not just as a form of living history but an educational tool as “Futurewell.generations need to know how Denver was built, how Littleton was built,” he said.
“In many cases, (metro areas) wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for that engineering marvel,” said Matt Crabtree, president of Historic Englewood, Inc. Today, only about two miles of the ditch are still open and visible, mostly throughout the cities of Littleton and Englewood. But much of it could soon be enclosed as the City of Englewood plans for a new piping project intended to modernize its drinking water infrastructure.
“We’re hoping we can come to some sort of compromise with the city that can be good with the residents of the city from a water supply standpoint and protect some portions of the City Ditch that are in both Englewood and Littleton,” Crabtree said. “It is not our intent to stop anything from an innovation standpoint.”Buthehopes some preservation of the ditch is still on the table.

Primarily constructed between 1864 and 1867, the roughly 4-footdeep ditch brought irrigation to the semi-arid desert landscape of Denver where as many as 150,000 people flocked for gold just years before. Among them were farmers in need of fertile land to grow food for the mining community, while others were entrepreneurs at the forefront of Colorado’s economic territorialization.Theyincluded William Byers, founder and editor of the Rocky Mountain News, whose company — Capitol Hydraulic — began digging the ditch in 1861, work that was eventually halted by the Civil War and would not be resumed for three years. After the company reconsolidated, it hired New Hampshire surveyor Richard Little who was eager to make a name out west. Denver became an “oasis city in the great American desert,” said Colorado historian Tom Noel. Along with farming and agriculture, the ditch’s irrigation water brought greenery and shade from trees, Noel said. He agreed with Louisa Ward Arps, a celebrated state historian who died in 1986, who called the ditch “the oldest working thing in Denver.”
“I can’t think of anything older,” NoelBorgersaid.said he wants to see Englewood explore alternative options to enclosing the ditch, such as piping that would run alongside the ditch as well as more historic signage near its open areas. And he wants Littleton to take “an active interest in that Littletonproject.”Public Works Director Keith Reester could not be reached for comment, but an agreement signed by both cities in 2013 affirms ownership and oversight of the ditch by the City of Englewood, which is currently enlisting a firm to help with preliminary design for the project, Ry said. The project is not expected to be completed until late 2023 or early 2024, according to Ry, who said an alternate plan, such as an adjacent pipe, could be more costly than piping and covering what has already beenStill, dug.Ry said he anticipates room for discussion with the historic groups as the city moves forward with its plans.
“The ditch is one of the primary water supply convenience systems to the City of Englewood,” said Pieter Van Ry, director of City of Englewood Utilities and South Platte Renew — the state’s thirdlargest wastewater center.

When people ask me what that run was like, I always respond the same way: It was a tremendous experience and I was blessed to have worked alongside some incredible people within the organization, including Zig’s son Tom Ziglar, who is still the CEO today as well as one of my partners. As Mr. Ziglar retired, I joined the Sandler Training organization led by David Mattson. I had known David for several years as he was a partner in one of our businesses with Zig, so making the decision to join Sandler was an easy one. Again, I worked alongside some tremendously talented people at Sandler, and continued to learn so much more about the corporate training environment. Sandler has a vast network filled with men and women who are at the top of the list of corporate training professionals, speakers and coaches. Sandler’s global presence provided me with an opportunity to build upon and expand my international experience, learning so much more about the cultural nuances of the many different countries we served. Why am I sharing this? Having spent 12 years with the Ziglar organization and nearly 10 years with Sandler, I never lost touch with the people that I worked alongside at either organization. As a matter of fact, it went deeper than just staying connected, I was able to partner with Sandler while at Ziglar, and then partner with Ziglar while at Sandler. Several weeks ago, I wrote a column about the importance of not burning bridges, and instead looking for ways to stay connected for the benefit of all parties. That lesson and the spirit of working cooperatively is demonstrated here.In2019 I branched out to launch my third start-up, a personal and professional development consulting organization. Ziglar and Sandler were both partners, as were several other of the leading training and development companies in the industry. I have so much respect for those companies and the work that they do and the difference they make in the lives of the people they teach, train, motivate and coach.

If you happen to read this column regularly, you will recognize the name Zig Ziglar, as I quote him often. I became a fan of Zig’s long before I partnered with him to launch a business and then becoming a part of his organization from 1998 through 2010 in some capacity, eventually becoming the president of the company.

LOCAL After President Joe Biden announced the administration’s plan to cancel $10,000 to $20,000 of student debt for millions of Americans last week, I listened to debates, watched the Facebook comments and had some interesting conversations with my husband about what this all means. For me, it very well could lead to $10,000 off the student loans I still carry from getting my degree from Arizona State University. Sure, for a moment I thought that’s awesome. That is a huge amount that will make it possible for me to pay off the full loan way sooner than expected. However, that thought of instant gratification faded when I really started looking at the big picture and realizing this is not as great as those pushing for this big payoff think. Even economists are questioning what it will mean to an already struggling economy. Will it make inflation worse? Will middle-class families be the ones paying the bill? A lot of questions started coming to mind.

While $10,000 is going to be looked at as this wonderful gift from the government — my question is, what happens next?
Think about it — a student who had a bunch of student loans they were paying off for the bachelor’s degree gets this gift applied to their loans. In some cases, the amount may even pay them off. What next? Does that person then go forward and get a master’s degree? Again, they will be signing the same loan documents they signed before.

As the days and discussions continue, I cannot see this as anything more than a political stunt to buy votes ahead of the midterms. Let’s face it, Democrats appear to be learning from past mistakes and taking advantage of American’s short attention spans by stringing several PR victories together leading up to Election Day. It is not a bad strategy.
Once they are tired of paying those loans — does the government again step in and pay those off?

Take all those billions of dollars Biden is willing to shell out to pay people’s loans off or down and apply them to fixing the system. Fix the loan system itself, fix the loan forgiveness system, and for the love of God, do something about the incredibly ridiculous tuition rates our institutions are
As a quote often attributed to Albert Einstein says, the definition of insanity is “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”
However, the long game strategy of student loans just shows an administration and Congress as a whole that refuses to truly address, discuss and work to fix a broken system.Iwillhappily forgo the instant gratification the $10,000 would bring in the name of fixing the system to make it possible for my three children to enter college without the problems our students are facing today.

town of residence,
I eventually signed up for a parenting course. I picked one that promised you would get your kids to obey the first time, every time with zero yelling.Icould only hope.
In Loving Place an Obituary for Your Loved One.
And while some children are better at following the rules than others, that does not make them better or worse kids. It just makes them different.Ihavetwo kids who are professional rule followers and two who are professional rule breakers. Their genders and ages have nothing to do with it. The rule followers are 12 and 6 years old. One is a boy and one is a girl. The rule breakers are 11 and 9, both are boys. It’s just who they are. And there are pros and cons to each personality. The rule followers are excellent at trusting others’ instructions, they’re teachable and coachable. But they struggle trusting their own intuition and it’s hard to teach them whose rules to trust and when it is OK to not follow them at all. My rule breakers spend a lot of time learning and relearning the importance of the rules around them. But when given free rein, their creativity and leadership abilities astound me. The fact that I view one group as easier to parent than the other is my issue, not theirs. I am so wary of products or parents who claim that they know how to fix someone else’s kid. First of all, viewing kids as an object to be fixed is so damaging. Second, I truly believe that there are little to no bad parents. Almost all parents love their kids and want what’s best for them. They may lack access to resources, not know how to love their kids in a healthy way or be misguided in what is truly best for them, but the desire and love is always there.
Yes, let’s share parenting stories and lessons learned, but for the sole purpose of each parent deciding for themselves if that tool will fit in their parenting toolbox.

When it comes to the parents I interact with, I will continue to believe that they are good people who don’t need me to tell them how to help their kids, they have that power in themselves. But what they could use is a listening ear and a vote of confidence in their ability to figure it out.
Logically, I should have been offended. But I was actually relieved and felt a wave of satisfaction. My child’s behavior wasn’t my fault. This woman’s famous parenting techniques that she promised would fix all of my problems didn’t apply to me. This experience was just the beginning of our journey down a road of getting my son the mental health care that he needed to succeed in the world.Butit taught me something else. The original Craft Box location was in Golden, and the store moved to Wheat Ridge five years ago. Items are donated to the store, and sometimes the store is able to purchase secondhand items from people. Employees want people to know these items are valued.

At the Craft Box, Boxler said, the No. 1 selling item is fabric, followed by yarn, though the store does see a great deal of paper crafters coming in for supplies. During the beginning of the pandemic, the shop saw an uptick in fabric sales for those sewing masks. As with many other craft stores, the Craft Box could not keep elastic on its shelves during this time. However, masks were not the only thing people were making during the lockdown.
Owner Liz Boxler had the idea for a secondhand craft store over 10 years ago when a friend passed away and left behind a mountain of craft supplies. She wanted to provide a place for the items to go where they would be appreciated.
“Our goal was definitely to keep things from going into the landfill,” Boxler said.
“I think it was good for us during COVID,” she said. “Not necessarily a huge spike in sales but more of an interest.”Boxlerhopes to continue to see this interest in crafts, and looks forward to new customers.

Not only does the store provide a second home for craft supplies, but it also provides a low-cost opportunity for those looking to start projects without breaking the bank. Supplies like fabric, yarn, stamps and more can get expensive when purchased new.The store also has a mission to sponsor charities and groups in the community. One ongoing project the store features is the “fidget quilt” for people with Alzheimer’s and sementia, where crafters can take a kit with supplies to create a quilt with tactile stimuli on it to bring back to the store to donate, or to give to someone they know who would benefit.Thestore also uses its unsellable fabric to make reusable tote bags for people to use at the local food bank.

Not only does The Good Couch believe in helping the environment, but the business also works to help the community. The company partners with Colorado Coalition for the Homeless and helps to donate furniture to the coalition as needed.
The thrift store in Englewood is run by about 10 volunteers. Not only does the store support the mission of Soul Dog, it also strives to support the local people.
The founders always hoped they could pair up with a local nonprofit group, Reichert said.
The volunteers at the store describe the place as “a little gem,” and say that people are consistently delighted to discover them. The store shut down for a few months during the pandemic, but now sees regular customers and a number of people buying clothing to send home to other countries or to bring to the Native American reservations.

The Good Couch will pick up most old couches for free, and the staff refurbishes them and sell the furniture for a low price.
“Most of our clientele are regulars,” said Wendy Roth, who has been volunteering for two years. The store gets more than just the regular clothing and knickknacks, however. One of the most bizarre donations was a “dog zipline kit,” which apparently sold very quickly.
Reichert attributed the uptick in business to the number of people moving, downsizing and generally trying to save money on furniture.TheGood Couch is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and closed on Sundays. We suspect some will be sold out fairly soon — for programs like the Celtic “Cherish the Ladies” (Nov. 27); “International Guitar Night” (Feb. 11); and “Jazz at Lincoln Center Presents: Songs We Love” (Feb. 8), for example. Area families may want to check through the listings, with a 2023 calendar in hand at some point soon. (Those calendars have started arriving at this address, so I’m guessing readers have several by now as well ...)The colorful, versatile Peking Acrobats are scheduled to perform on Feb. 10 and are really amazing to watch for audiences of all ages. Nimble, fearless, graceful, at times funny, they offer a versatile program that ranges from extreme athleticism to beautiful “almost dance” and a number of points in between. Families will enjoy a traditional Chinese art form. Lone Tree calls it “a Chinese Carnival,” describing “a precarious pagoda of chairs, trick cycling, precision tumbling, somersaulting and gymnastics. They defy gravity with amazing displays of contortion, flexibility and control.”

The creative process is a unique and mysterious process — one that defies easy explanation and rationalization, even by those who have been artists their whole lives. But the artists in Walker Fine Arts latest show, Modus Operandi, explore this process and their own artistic language. It’s on display through Saturday, Sept. 10. Portland, Oregon, artist Volkan Alkanoglu has created a 34-foottall contemporary art sculpture for the city and when it is installed this fall, it will be the largest 3-D printed sculpture of its kind in the United States and the second largest in the world, according to provided information. Its home will be on the median at East 136th Avenue between I-25 and Lincoln Street.“Thornton is really interested in becoming a beacon for more contemporary public art and a place that adds art that is a little less traditional,” said Hannah Leathers, Thornton public art coordinator.
ported thinking big about the work brought in a lot of submissions.”
O ne of the great things about public art is that it serves so many purposes — just as easily as it adds beauty to a community, it can also become a landmark, a location for people to orient their lives around. And Thornton’s latest public art piece aims to become a waypoint for both residents and travelers alike due to both its size and location.

Alkanoglu has worked in the state before and the way he embraces STEM principles in his creations made it uniquely appealing, as did the fact that it’s made of carbon fiber, which should withstand all the Colorado climate can throw at it. “When I proposed this sculpture for Thornton, I wanted to design something that would complement the extraordinary backdrop of the Colorado sky and Rocky Mountains complete with its purples, blues and warm colors,” he said in a provided statement. “The site was chosen as a gateway for Thornton with the sculpture signaling a city on the move.”
The work’s location on one of the state’s major highways will not only provide plenty of eyes, but also an opportunity for those doing something as routine as driving to or from work the opportunity to be transported by the power of art. “It’s a gift to take something different and futuristic and put it where people can see it. It can be a shock visually, but over time it can define a place and give residents a sense of pride,” Leathers said. “These kinds of pieces start out as landmarks, but become what a place is known for.”

Some of the research suggests that a healthy diet is associated with the brain’s ability to remember and potentially stave off dementia.
Aging smarter: Top tips for better brain health YOUR
Bottom line Always be mindful of changes as you age. If you notice abnormal or rapid changes in memory or forgetfulness, talk to your provider. There are many reasons for memory changes. For example, if you have had COVID-19 and are experiencing “brain fog,” it could be a post-COVID condition.Practicing some or all of these strategies might help keep you ahead of the aging curve. Remember, needing extra time is normal as we age, but you are still capable of learning new skills and forming new memories as you get older.

We tend to chalk up these momentary memory lapses to our busy schedules or even stress. As it turns out, occasional forgetfulness can be a normal and natural part of aging. However, these episodes of forgetfulness also may be a sign of a more serious problem with mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer’s. The good news is there are some simple strategies you can implement that may help combat memory loss and keep your mind sharp, no matter your stage in life. Exercise that brain We all have heard the adage “use it or lose it.” This is particularly prudent advice when it comes to keeping your memory and brain function in the best shape
Don’t shortchange your zzz’s The brain is constantly busy during waking hours, but while we sleep, the brain has a chance to relax and “detoxify” from the day. Scientists are learning that this process is critical to maintaining brain function, and in turn, helps keep the brain healthy and memory sharp.
Dr. Greg Kaczmarczyk, family physician with New West Physicians, part of Optum in Denver.
Aim for seven to nine hours of quality sleep a night. Of course, everyone is different, and medications as well as underlying health conditions can impact sleep. Consult your provider if you are having trouble getting adequate sleep. Get moving Regular physical activity can boost brain health. Most adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity weekly along with at least 2 non-consecutive days of strength training. But, set realistic fitness-related goals for where you are in life. Starting with daily walking is a good first step. Or perhaps you feel motivated to finish your first 5K or hit a nice bike trail. People should always check with their physician before starting any exercise regimen.

Dr. Aaron Lazorwitz, an OB-GYN, who moved from Houston to CU for his residency, said that medical students from Texas and Oklahoma — where abortion is illegal — have reached out to CU for Lazorwitzresources.saidthat although he and other CU physicians want to help, they simply don’t have the resources to do so and have to prioritize their own students and residents.
“Another big thing for us is rural access to family planning,” Soliz said.
Selina Najar, Cobalt Advocate’s political director, began the session by stating that since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Colorado has shouldered the burden of providing abortions to patients in neighboring states where the procedure is now“Weillegal.arebearing the impact of the Supreme Court’s unconscionable decision to overturn Roe v. Wade,” Najar said. “What we have seen in Colorado is what we have warned about with the Supreme Court for years. Overturning Roe means that states like Colorado are under incredible pressure to help patients and providers.”
Crow — a longtime supporter of abortion rights — reaffirmed his position on the issue and said it was important for him to understand the “impact on the ground” so that he can humanize the issue to colleagues in an effort to gain their support.
“There are some areas that are unique for legislating as well that I think we could get some traction,” Crow said. “One of those is protection of data; of publicly available, public domain women’s health data that could be used to criminalize women’s healthcare in states where abortion is illegal. And there are some efforts underway to look at how we can move legislation to provide some federal protections for that data, so it’s not used against women.”
Tocce explained how despite expanded efforts, abortion providers are “literally overrun with patients who need abortion services,” which is in turn having a ripple effect on patients seeking other services such as birth control, cancer screening and wellness exams. Appointment wait times are now over three weeks, Tocce said.
Aurea Bolaños Perea, the strategic communications manager at COLOR — the Colorado Organization for Latina Opportunity and Reproductive rights — specifically addressed difficulties people of color face when seeking abortions.

“You’re going to have these generations of physicians coming up who can’t provide these services, can’t take care of women, and you end up in these tragic circumstances we hear on the news,” Lazorwitz continued.
Finally, Roy Taylor gave a heartfelt personal testimony about his family’s experience.Fiveyears ago, Roy and his wife went for an ultrasound. The doctor came back to the Taylors and informed them that “the fetal abnormalities were incompatible with life.” The Taylors were advised to have an abortion.
Taylor urged Crow to be honest with his congressional colleagues about what people actually go through when they get an abortion.
“At PPRM we provide care in Colorado, New Mexico, Southern Nevada and Wyoming during this crisis in healthcare —I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a public health crisis,” Tocce said. “We are trying to increase services. Every abortion care provider is increasing services; expanding hours, onboarding more staff, utilizing telemedicine, utilizing patient navigation services.”

Additionally, Crow said that he hopes to prioritize protecting data so that abortion patients are not criminalized for seeking healthcare.
Perea also mentioned fake pregnancy centers and said they disproportionally target people of color. Perea stated that these centers outnumber abortion clinics 3-to-1 nationally and 2-to-1 in Colorado and specifically target lowincome people and people of color.
“Protecting abortion doesn’t mean it’s accessible for everybody,” Perea said. “I have to watch the ads, the stories in Spanish media saying, ‘Come here, esta clinica ahora,’ and you will be able to find care if you’re a new mother or “(Patientsexpecting.”are)expecting to be treated with the same amount of respect that somebody that may come to (CU Anschutz) and this hospital may receive,” Perea continued, “And what they end up receiving is someone saying ‘Do you want baby formula? Do you want diapers? You must go to this counseling center. I’ll give you an ultrasound and I’ll try to convince you to not terminate this pregnancy.’ Almost as if abortion is a quid pro quo for our communities.”ChristinaSoliz, COLOR’s political director, advocated for using non-gendered language in messaging so that “we’re not leaving folks behind in talks of reproductive healthcare.” Soliz also advocated to expanded resources for rural residents seeking abortion.
“We’re trying to figure out what we can do to help because we all feel a strong obligation and commitment to that education and helping the future OB-GYNs,” Lazorwitz said. “And we’re all really struggling to figure out how we’re going to do that because we have to put our residents first… The patients are coming to get the care here and it’s just going to get worse and worse as those trainees in those states don’t get the training they need.
“It was an extremely difficult experience,” Taylor said. “This was an experience with all the support my wife needed; I had good insurance, we came to a great hospital, we had excellent care from the moment we showed up until the moment we left, everybody was great. But these things are hard.”
In addition to these challenges, Tocce spoke about the harassment she and her patients are subjected to on a daily basis and asked for legal protection from those incidents. “I am harassed every day when I walk into work,” Tocce said. “I have patients sobbing because they’re harassed by a man on a bullhorn calling them a murderer. That really takes a toll on an individual and makes people even more scared, providers and patients alike. We have rules and regulations around harassment of abortion care providers, but if they could be expanded or even reinforced that would be very beneficial to our aspect of care.”
Abortion providers make legislative recommendations to Rep. Crow
Abortion providers and advocates make legislative recommendations to Crow.
“There’s so many lies about what’s going on,” Taylor said. “The notion of the state coming in and intruding on these moments for families is so abhorrent and so scary. It’s just so important that people know the stories. Make them honestly look at these stories and and honestly look at these people and honestly see the pain they’re causing.”
Dr. Kristina Tocce, PPRM’s medical director, outlined five legislative recommendations to Crow; streamlining the national network of abortion providers, developing measures to attract and retain staff, clearly communicated protections for abortion patients and providers and investigating fake centers that offer “dangerous and falsely advertised services.”
Amid attacks on abortion access nationwide, abortion providers and advocates met with Rep. Jason Crow (CO-06) on Aug. 24 at the CU Anschutz Medical Campus to make legislative recommendations.Representatives—including physicians, administrators and others with abortion-related experiences — from Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, Cobalt Advocates, CU Medical and COLOR highlighted at-risk areas in the field including training deficiencies, protections for patients and providers, inclusive language and equity in access.
“That includes access to telemedicine and mailed medication and language justice. Making sure they can receive care in their language that’s culturally competent can make a world of difference for folks.”

Arapahoe’s defense stepped forward in a 10-3 season-opening football win for the Warriors over Legacy.TheArapahoe defense was under pressure most of the game but held up to notch the win on Aug. 25 at Littleton Public School Stadium.

Another Arapahoe interception turned the ball over at the 8-yard line but the Warriors’ Cade Huggins recovered a fumble at the 3-yard line to avert another Legacy score in the second quarter.
Arapahoe was ranked 10th in the CHSAANow.com preseason poll and used its defense to spark its initial victory of the 2022 season.
“This team is gritty,” added Brayton about his team. “They fight and we learned that in our scrimmages. They usually rise up. We’re not the biggest team, we’re not real flashy but what we do is we fight.”
Arapahoe gave Legacy the ball at the 14-yard line after an interception on its first drive of the game but the defense stiffened and held the visitors to a 35-yard field goal. “Our defense played really outstanding,” said first-year Arapahoe coach Tyler Brayton. “They did a great job of getting stops after turnovers and change of possessions and had a big fourth down stop. The offense played hard but we just need to execute a little better.”

Ponderosa has been a 4A school playing in the 5A Continental League. The Mustangs are in the Continental League again but this year has to qualify for the 5A state playoffs instead of the 4A postseason.“We’re excited,” said Roberts. “We feel like we can play with anybody. We love our league because it is so tough. This is a pretty experienced team we have. Last year we were 23-4 and we have most of them back and the kids from Virginia coming in. “I think we’re going to be a good ball club. We’ll be competitive in our games. I told them what I liked about the Discovery Canyon game is they didn’t quit. It’s good when they have that kind of energy and don’t die and just go out and keep battling.”

“I was just trying to stay positive,” said Jasi. “I had it in my head, that it is just a game and have fun. “I knew we could do better but when we come back in the end that is important. I feel this year we have a way better chemistry on the team and we’re all like playing together. Whenever we get down we feel we can come Ponderosaback.”starting pitcher Olivia Trombley gave up three runs in the first inning but blanked the Thunder the remainder of the game.
Martinez had the walk-o hit in the bottom of the eighth inning in the Mustangs’ 4-3 victory.

Jasi Martinez moved from Virginia to Ponderosa High School during the summer and she has been a welcomed addition to the Mustangs’ girls softball team. The junior shortshop had three hits, including a walk-off single, to lead Ponderosa to a 4-3, eight-inning victory over Discovery Canyon in a game played Aug. 23 at Ponderosa. The win was the third straight for the Mustangs to open the season prior to the Mustang Stampede tournament.Martinezis hitting .429 with seven runs batted in after three games and has been a spark plug for Pondo. “Jasi is something else,” said Pondo coach Mark Roberts. “She’s a leader. She was a move in from Virginia this year. That was a nice surprise.“Hersister (senior first baseman Lexi) played for me her freshman year and they had military and went back to Virginia and then moved back here this summer. I didn’t know anything about the shortstop. She’s pretty good. Let’s just say it didn’t take long to get her on the team.”Jasidoubled in the fifth inning and led off the bottom of the seventh with a double. She scored the tying run on Ellie Williams’ single, which sent the game into an extra inning.Withone out and runners on first and second in the bottom of the eighth, Jasi smashed a hit down the third base line to drive home Delaney Wright with the winning run.

Public Notices are now listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act because of human development, rising sea levels and coastal storms, Klute said. Colorado has the largest known interior population of the elusive birds in North BiologistsAmerica.believe there’s a high num ber of the black rails that live in dense marshes along the Arkansas River in southeastern Colorado, but because they are so elusive, CPW is still working to estimate its population. The agency’s conservation actions are categorized by its progress. Green indicates that the agency is on track to complete a conservation action, yellow or orange means it is “partially on track” to be complete, and red shows that the project has not yet been started. Conservation efforts for some “more charismatic” species, as Klute called them, including wolves and black-foot ed ferrets, have received a lot of atten tion. Some, more divisive than others. But there are other lesser known species, like the Gunnison sage grouse, that face a similar need for conserva tion. The federal government lists the birds, known for their elaborate courtship rituals and whose largest population lives in the Gunnison Basin, as“It’sthreatened.agreatexample of where Colorado is really responsible for the global conservation of that species,” Klute said. “If they don’t succeed here in Colorado, they aren’t going to exist anywhere else in the world.”

possibly avoid recovery efforts for some species down the road, Klute said. There have been recent efforts to get the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to list the pinyon jay as an endangered or threatened species. The birds, which live primarily in western Colorado and throughout the western U.S., have seen a steep decline in population partly because of the loss of its piñon-juniper woodlands habitat.
CPW’s progress on its conservation actions used to appear in a PDF and now can be viewed on the interactive dashboard, which is updated regularly. Colorado’s State Wildlife Action Plan is set to be revised in 2025.
