The local public health agency for Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties has decided to require masks for all children aged 2 to 11 years old — and all the individuals working or interacting with those children — in all indoor school and child-care settings in the three counties as a COVID-19 safety measure.

In its much-anticipated Aug. 17 decision, which was effective Aug. 23, the Tri-County Health Department cited the absence of an approved coronavirus vaccine for children under the age of 12 years.

The spread of the coronavirus, exacerbated by the delta variant, has been increasing for nearly six weeks in Tri-County Health’s jurisdiction, the agency said.

For Dehaven’s daughter, communicating amid masked faces — reading facial cues and enunciating words — can be difficult at an age when language skills are still developing, Dehaven said.

“It’s hard to explain to her why. She’s just doing it (wearing masks) because everyone else is,” said Dehaven, who also noted Ramona adjusted well to wearing masks.

“She really went with the flow with it. We got her a dozen different ones so she could mix and match with her outfits — (to make it) more a fashion accessory than a pandemic accessory,” Dehaven said.

COVID-19 protocols at school seem “pretty chill now” compared to earlier in the pandemic, Awad said. He noted there’s no mask requirement for his age group and that students can sit next to each other.

“It’s easier to work with people,” Awad added.

Conversations among his friends about COVID-19 have waned — “only the parents talk about it,” Awad said.

Isabella Dorf, a sophomore, said she’s not too worried about the coronavirus but said there are things Grandview could do better.

Colorado is home to thousands of soldiers and airmen, many of whom deployed to Afghanistan over the past 20 years — some of whom did not return or came back mentally and physically scarred by the conflict.

The Taliban takeover of the South Asian country has left those veterans battling mixed emotions about their sacrifice. Some are frustrated that their service may have been in vain while others are elated to see U.S. troops leaving what they feel was a hopeless war.

“This is a challenging time for U.S. combat veterans as we grapple with the meaning of the last 20 years and your service and your sacrifice,” U.S. Rep. Jason Crow, a Centennial Democrat and a veteran of the Afghanistan war, said Aug. 16 during a news conference. “You stood up, you raised your right hand and you served your country when you were called to do so and you should be proud of that. You made a difference in the lives of many people.”

Nearly 2,500 American troops were killed in Afghanistan through April, including 40 who were from Colorado and 95 who were stationed at Fort Carson, per a Colorado Sun analysis. Members of the military stationed at Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora and Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs also were killed in America’s longest war.

The Sun spoke with three veterans of the Afghanistan wars last week to get their perspective on the country’s collapse: ‘It absolutely was worth it’ In June 2012, David Ortiz was an Army helicopter pilot flying a mission in eastern Afghanistan. He was tasked with checking out a report that the Taliban had deployed a Russian heavy machine gun.

During the trip, the aircraft’s engine exploded and the Kiowa Warrior he was flying crashed.

“My memory cuts out at about 20 feet from the ground,” said Ortiz, who is 39 and lives in Littleton. “I woke up three to five minutes later, dust in the air. I was feeling hot. I was covered in metal.”

Ortiz quickly realized that he had a spinal cord injury. He also had a fractured cheekbone and ribs, a laceration to his skull and a collapsed right lung. “I knew I was in bad shape,” he said.

Ortiz spent months in the hospital as he recovered from his injuries.

He lacks sensation and muscle control below his waist because of the crash. In 2020, he was elected as a Democratic state representative in Colorado, representing parts of Littleton and Centennial.

Ortiz is feeling frustrated with the Biden administration and how it handled the withdrawal of U.S. troops.

“I was optimistic,” he said. “We’ve been there for 20 years. I believed

that we had done what we had needed to do to train the Afghan National Army. I believed that leadership wouldn’t be making this decision unless we could leave Afghanistan a stable country that could fight against the Taliban. Clearly that was not the case.”

Ortiz doesn’t buy that the war in Afghanistan had to end this way, or that the U.S. had to pull out at all. He pointed to Japan and Germany, where the U.S. has had troops since World War II. The American military still has a large presence in South Korea, too.

“I feel like this administration stubbornly stuck to their decision and to talking points and to political campaign processes more than the reality on the ground. It’s been disgusting for me to see, quite frankly,” he said.

He said his “heart breaks for the Afghan people. It especially breaks for the women and girls who are going to have to live under this oppressive regime.”

Ortiz, who was medically retired in May 2016 as a chief warrant officer, still strongly believes in what the U.S. military accomplished in Afghanistan.

“It absolutely was worth it,” he said of his sacrifice and the sacrifice of his fellow soldiers. “We have not seen a 9/11-style attack on our shores since 9/11, and that is no small part because of their sacrifice.

That is directly correlated to the fact that we took the fight to them and we took the fight there for 20-plus years.”

COVID cases rise; doctors frustrated with unvaccinated Delta variant more contagious, hospitals see more patients under 50

As the new delta variant of COVID spreads, hospitals and emergency rooms along the Front Range say they are seeing more patients but are not yet overwhelmed.

According to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, as of Aug. 20, ICU beds went from 72% to 80% occupancy over the preceding month. In the Denver metro area, hospital officials say they are handling the uptick well but remain concerned as the new COVID variant is a lot more transmissible.

According to UCHealth, after a steady decrease of COVID patients between April and mid-July, cases are steadily rising with more than 200 patients with confirmed or suspected COVID infections being admitted into UCHealth hospitals in Douglas and Adams counties.

Dr. Ben Usatch, emergency medicine physician and medical director of the UCHealth Highlands Ranch Hospital Emergency Department, said along with the increasing number of patients, frustration among health-care providers is rising.

Usatch said the difference between vaccinated patients with break-

through COVID and unvaccinated patients is night and day. Most vaccinated patients come to the ER more out of fear and are quickly released, Usatch said.

“Really, we are seeing two flavors of COVID patients,” he said. “The vaccinated have a runny nose, maybe a slight fever and headache.

The unvaccinated are ending up in the ICU and deteriorating quickly.

The vaccine really does protect from serious disease. It is heart wrenching.”

Usatch said besides the delta variant being a lot more contagious, a big change from treating COVID patients from last year is age. Last year, hospitals were treating more patients over 65. This year, most patients coming into emergency rooms are under 50 and unvaccinated, Usatch said.

At Sky Ridge Medical Center in Lone Tree, Chief Medical Officer Eric Young said they are not overwhelmed with patients, but the HealthOne hospital is seeing a steady increase of COVID cases between the ages of 18 and 50.

“I wouldn’t say we are inundated with patients at this point. We are managing them well,” he said. “The unvaccinated cases we are treating are a bigger concern. They are more contagious and have a lot more symptoms.”

Like Usatch, Lung said it is frustrating to have a vaccine option available but have emergency rooms still filling up with unvaccinated patients.

“The only way out of this pandemic is to get vaccinated,” Lung stressed.

Dr. Katie Sprinkle, an emergency room physician with the Medical Center of Aurora, said it is not about the delta variant, but about treating positive COVID cases.

“The people we are admitting are the unvaccinated,” she said. “In

most cases, the breakthrough vaccinated patients are released. Hospitals across the city are going to keep getting full.”

Jobman said she is recommending a lot of her adult patients go to the ER but children with COVID still seem to be handling the virus well.

“Delta has definitely become the dominant strain in the positive tests we are seeing,” she said. “Child cases are steadily climbing because it is so much more contagious, which is why we are seeing it in unvaccinated and vaccinated patients.

The unvaccinated patients who are under 50 are getting very sick.”

Jobman said vaccinated patients are getting better quickly, as they would with a common cold. Vaccinated patients are rarely being sent to hospitals for elevated treatment, she said.

At Children’s Health Colorado (CHC), Kevin Carney, associate chief medical officer and pediatrics emergency medicine specialist, said there are a lot more concerns for children under 12 as the delta variant spreads.

With children under 12 still not eligible for the vaccine, Carney said they are more vulnerable for the highly contagious variant, especially with schools across the metro area starting this month.

With CHC facilities in Highland Ranch, Aurora, Centennial, Wheat Ridge, Parker and Broomfield, Carney said officials are not hitting the panic button but remain on alert.

“Our cases in children are still average but above our lower numbers,” Carney said. “We are not

Dr. Eric Lung, chief medical officer at Sky Ridge Medical Center, says poor air quality and an increase in contagious respiratory cases are adding to parent stress as the new delta variant of COVID continues to spread.

Lung said one of the biggest concerns coming out of the hospital’s pediatric unit in Lone Tree is the unseasonably high number of RSV cases this year.

RSV, or respiratory syncytial virus, is a common respiratory virus that causes mild, cold-like symptoms. While most recover within a week or two, RSV can be serious for infants and older adults. RSV is the most common cause of bronchiolitis and pneumonia in

children under a year old.

Symptoms of RSV include runny nose, decrease in appetite, coughing, sneezing, fever and wheezing.

Kevin Carney, a pediatric emergency specialist for Children’s Hospital Colorado, said RSV cases are a lot more common in the winter.

“We really are not sure why this is showing up at such an atypical time,” he said. “There are a lot of different factors that are being looked at.”

Besides RSV, Carney said children are not immune to environmental factors. With poor air quality continuing and a lot of smoke in the air, kids with asthma and respiratory issues have been struggling, he said.

MIS-C is also increasing among children along the Front Range.

MIS-C, or multisystem inflammatory syndrome, is a serious condition associated with COVID-19

overwhelmed but reports are showing cases are creeping up on us. As it continues to spread, we just keep recommending wearing masks, get the vaccine if you are eligible and wash hands and toys regularly.”

Carney said CHC has no doubt that children should be back in school in person, but precautions should be taken, including wearing masks to protect children who cannot yet get vaccinated.

Anne Jobman, of UCHealth Primary Care, said the problem with MIS-C is it can present with a variety of symptoms and show up weeks after a child is exposed to COVID. Symptoms of MIS-C can include abnormal gut pain, bloodshot eyes, chest tightness/pain, diarrhea, feeling extra tired, headache, low blood pressure and neck pain.

At such a vulnerable time for children, Carney and Jobman said parents should be overly cautious this year. If a child is having any kind of symptoms, Jobman said parents should call a regular-care doctor and immediately get a COVID test.

Carney and Jobman also agreed that keeping sick children home until they are diagnosed or better is more important now than ever.

Vets ‘could have told you this would happen’ One of the things that sticks out most from Tony Adams’ deployment to Afghanistan from 2009 to 2010 was the 5-year-old girl he tried to save after she was caught and wounded in a gun battle between the Afghan National Army and the Taliban.

“Probably one of the harder things I had to do,” said the 39-year-

old who lives in Colorado Springs.

But there were moments that he looks back on with happiness, like his work to reopen a school that had been shuttered by the Taliban, and how he and his comrades ensured that Afghans could vote freely.

“I don’t think my time there was poorly spent,” he said.

Still, Adams, who was a sergeant in the 4th Infantry Division based at Fort Carson, admits that the chaos unfolding in Afghanistan has left him with “a lot of complex feelings.”

He can’t help but wonder if his time in the country was for naught.

His thoughts turn to the friend whose legs were badly injured when an improvised explosive device went off. That man still may lose his foot.

“I think a lot of people wonder if it’s worth it,” he said. “It’s hard because I think most veterans could have told you that this would happen if we pulled out.”

‘We should just ... leave them alone’ Matthew Smith always had his doubts about why the American military was in Afghanistan, even when he was deployed to the country in 2012 as a Marine working in aviation logistics.

“I never understood why we were messing around up there,” he said.

Now, with the country falling back into Taliban hands, the 31-year-old who lives in Aurora thinks the U.S. should stay the course with its withdrawal.

“I don’t see a reason to send more troops over there to retake a place that can’t take care of itself,” Smith said.

Smith, who reached the rank of corporal, said he and other Marines were told their mission in Afghanistan was to train Afghan troops so they could operate on their own and then the U.S. could leave.

“We seemed to never leave them alone,” he said. “We should just pull out and leave them alone. They’ll

never stand on their own. We’re just wasting not only resources, but American lives to help them do something they’ll never do.”

As a Marine, however, he said what’s happening in Afghanistan is frustrating.

The Afghan province where Camp Bastion is located — the base where Smith worked and survived a deadly Taliban attack — was captured by the Taliban.

“Something you fought for and cared for and you wanted to see stay safe isn’t anymore,” he said. “That time you put in almost seems like it was a waste. Almost like you did it for nothing.”

Inoke Tonga, until recently the volleyball coach at Valor Christian High School in Highlands Ranch, claimed through social media that he was forced to leave his job because he is gay.

In an Aug. 21 post seen on his Facebook and Instragram accounts, Tonga said that after coaching the private school’s girls volleyball team last year and the start of this year, his tenure ended on Aug. 19 after a meeting with the school’s campus pastor and athletic director regarding a social media post that had been brought to their attention.

“I sat in the room being grilled about how being gay is a danger to the school and to the kids,” Tonga said. “That with me identifying as a gay man, they can’t put the kids at risk by having me in front of them.”

A statement from the private school’s administration, provided by marketing coordinator Nancy Columbia, said: “Valor Christian High School embraces, loves and respects all students, families, and other participants in our community, regardless of whether or not they agree with Valor’s beliefs.”

The statement added: “As a Chris-

tian faith community, Valor requires its staff, faculty, and volunteer leaders — those who represent the Valor community and guide the spiritual development of our students — to agree with Valor’s Christian beliefs set forth in our Statement of Beliefs and in other policies, and to live in accordance with such beliefs.”

Columbia said that in connection with Tonga’s employment, he signed a statement affirming his alignment with Valor’s beliefs and community standards.

Last week, Columbia said, Valor became aware of a Facebook post by Tonga that suggested he might not support Valor’s beliefs pertaining to sexuality and marriage.

Columbia said this led to Valor’s campus pastor and athletic director initiating a conversation with Tonga to explore the matter further on Aug. 19. Following this discussion, Tonga provided statements that showed his beliefs did not align with Valor’s, which led to the separation that Valor and Tonga agreed was appropriate, according to the school.

While the Christian school did not say which post led them to question Tonga, the coach posted the following statement on Facebook on June 15: “If you really want to see the lack of charity, love, and compassion (or any ‘Christ Like’ attributes) in any Christian individual, from any Christian religion, tell them you’re gay. Achieving success starts with defining success

T

he children laughed at one another as each took a turn playing the game.

With each passing turn, the children laughed harder, cheering on their friends. The game they were playing was “pin the tail on the donkey.” As each attempt found its way somewhere other than the donkey, the farther away the tail landed, the greater the laughter.

A blindfold makes it hard to hit a target that cannot be seen, especially after being spun around a few times before walking dizzily toward our destination. Although this is a game, with the players being blindfolded, there is still an intended target. It’s one thing to try and hit a target we cannot see, but something else altogether to hit a target we don’t have.

“If you don’t know where you are going, any road can take you there.” — Lewis Carroll When pursuing personal growth or professional development goals, I have found that whatever it is that we are trying to achieve can be found in one of these four categories: increase, improve, expand, and/or reduce.

It is also helpful to make a distinction between increase and improve. As an example, a business looking to define success and align key performance goals may identify the need to increase revenue while at the same time improving their margins. Individuals I have worked out with may look to increase strength while improving stamina.

And when we separate the two words,

I’m mad and it feels so good

oesn’t it just drive you crazy when someone tells you to “calm down” or “just be positive”? Right when you have that deep frustration or anger inside of you bubbling up and someone tries to get you to ignore or just “stop” your feelings. What?? So, how am I supposed to do that? And why should I anyway?

I’ve realized lately that all the crises in the world are starting to intimately affect my own inner world, my mind, in a different way these days. Usually, my default response to tragedy is first jumping in to help (if I can) and then feeling the sadness of the people’s experiences. As a crisis responder, chaplain, or single mom, I have always been able to dive in whenever I needed to and compartmentalize my own emotions until I got to a safe space to do so. However, lately, I’ve noticed I’ve had a shorter fuse or a rewired circuitry in my brain that isn’t going that way. I’m finding myself feeling frustration or anger first. Is anyone else feeling that way?

So why is that? Obviously, we’ve all got a lot of tragedy around us right now — friends or family getting sick or dying, innocent people getting crushed under collapsing buildings, or being killed or

increase and improve, we are defining very clear goals and targets for each.

Some of us look to expand our capabilities in an area of our life or business. We may want to expand our knowledge or skill.

Some of us may look to expand our thinking to gain a better understanding of the people in our lives and events happening around the world. We can look for opportunities to open more stores or locations, expanding our market share, or expand our offerings and customer base.

When it comes to defining success by reducing something, we look at things like reducing costs, reducing inches from our waistline, reducing timelines to complete a project faster, reduce the turnover of our employees, or reduce the risks associated with our health, our business, or our finances.

One of the primary reasons people and companies never settle on true goals or the definition of success is that we get caught up in the gray areas of what success looks like. We know that we want to get better in some way, but struggle with where to start.

And how one person or business defines success can be vastly different from person to person and business to business.

While working on performance development, I started focusing on those four words in my questions to help bring clarity to the conversation and direction around productivity goals. I will ask you the same thing I ask others, “What is it in your life

injured in an earthquake, brave souls trying to flee from the violence of a country collapse, and the list goes on. In my own home, I’m so lucky to feel safe now.

It wasn’t always that way, but the days of me walking on eggshells are over. Is it my PTSD that’s showing up in a different way now? What I’ve learned (and apparently forgotten) is that ignoring or trying to “stop” my anger just doesn’t work well for me, or anybody.

Of course, I’m angry! Look at the Japanese beetles eating my beautiful roses, the tiny ants on my kitchen sink that keep coming back, the walls in my house that desperately need painting, my family members being exposed to COVID when other people just don’t want to get vaccinated or wear a mask. And that doesn’t even cover the shortage of water, and dangerous air pollution we have now because of a dying planet that we could have started protecting decades ago. And don’t even get me started on the racism embedded in our systems and culture. You bet I’m angry. So what. join the club, Linda.

In reflection of all this, I was reminded that my shorter fuse is because I haven’t been expressing my anger healthily lately.

It’s not because of all those things and people that make me angry on the outside.

It’s because I haven’t been doing my own work on the inside. So, I’m back to healthy exercises of screaming into my pillow, hitting my bed with a tennis racket, singing angrily at the top of my lungs (sorry, neighbors). And above all, when I feel my anger starting to rise in my body, I note it and say it out loud to myself or whomever is there at the time. It’s time to give up the need for looking perfect and nice and civil.

I’m a human, too, with real emotions like everyone else. So be it.

Phew, I feel so much better now! Coming clean and admitting publicly that I’m human is revolutionary for me. Or should I say evolutionary?

he Western Welcome Week Parade returned to downtown Littleton on Aug. 21, bringing back a tradition that was missed last year because of COVID restrictions. Prior to that, the parade was the only event that had been held every year of Western Welcome Week’s nine-decade-plus history.

This year’s parade boasted 83 entries with high school marching bands from across the state. Equestrians, tractors and floats also brought excitement to the streets.

A music writer’s online resource captures pop music’s roots

he cardboard storage boxes form a chronological grid, left to right, on an entire basement wall — stacked five tall and 10 across, starting with the 1970s on the top left.

They contain artifacts spanning generations of musical acts: press kits, publicity photos, notes and writings that chronicle an era and chart a collision course with history.

In the last several years they’ve become G. Brown’s creative lodestar. The 67-year-old longtime fixture in Colorado’s music media — he has chronicled the scene both in print and on the radio since his high school days — has channeled his professional life toward preserving and cataloging the state’s pop-music legacy.

“My gift — the luck — was that I was writing for a major daily newspaper, when that READ (AND HEAR) meant something,” says Brown, whose work MORE ONLINE appeared for 26 years in the pages of The Denver Post from 1977 to 2003. Brown’s late-career passion project pours the contents of all those basement boxes, and all that he saw and heard, into a digital platform that didn’t even exist when many of the artists performed at the height of their talents.

In his two-year-old nonprofit, the Colorado Music Experience, he’s building what he envisions as a highly inclusive online historical archive at colomusic.org.

The site features profiles, podcasts, videos and photos of artists whose connection to the state ranged from memorable performances to visits to deep-rooted institutions like the legendary Caribou Ranch in west Boulder County, where many performers sought high-altitude inspiration and round-the-clock access to a recording studio.

Videos celebrate acts like countryrock group Poco, whose musical family tree flourished far and wide.

There’s even an extended nod to early 20th-century artists like Elizabeth Spencer, Colorado icon Glenn Miller and others.

More than two dozen (and counting) podcasts feature superstars like Graham Nash sitting down in a local studio. Overall, the podcasts trace the arc of Brown’s experience writing about not only classic pop performers, but also newer Colorado-centered artists like The Fray and the Lumineers.

The exploration of Brown’s personal archives also gave birth to another, more conventional historical project. He’s already three volumes into an ambitious 21-book series called “On Record,” which eventually will tell the year-by-year story of pop music in America from 1978 to 1998.

Each book features roughly 350 pages of bite-sized historical perspective gleaned from his archival interviews and photos. Though not a Colorado-centric undertaking, proceeds from the books’ sales go back to the nonprofit Colorado Music Experience.

“I’ve got a passion for this stuff,” Brown says. “I did not start it out of spite, or to compete with anyone. But no one’s doing this work, OK? So it’s on me and that’s what I should be

The gig that catapulted him to prominence and allowed him to accrue decades of pop music history ended abruptly in 2003, when he resigned from the Post in the wake of the discovery that one of his concert previews contained sentences lifted from another article. That triggered an investigation of his previous year’s work that found 12 more passages from other publications.

Brown maintains his mistakes were unintentional but that he should have been more careful in

his writing. He calls the episode “the worst time of my professional life.”

“I read voraciously, everything I could, to be well-informed,” he says. “It bit me in the ass and I got sloppy. I’ll definitely cop to that. But I don’t think that the people who disparaged my work get to define my legacy. I worked too hard for that to happen.”

Brown immediately moved to a radio job at KCUV, a Denver-area progressive rock station where he helped build a small but loyal following. But ownership pulled the plug five years later, citing low ratings and the faltering economy.

Brown shifted his focus to helping launch the Colorado Music Hall of Fame — he served seven years as a founding director — and also drew on his vast inventory of music history to tackle multiple book projects.

All paths ultimately led him toward the Colorado Music Experience.

Initially, Brown imagined the wide-ranging historical reach of the Colorado Music Experience not as a website, but as a bricks-and-mortar, physical space where patrons could eat and drink while immersed in Colorado music artifacts. He imagined a partnership with a brewery or dispensary or even a coffee shop.

“But bottom line, I didn’t want to get into the bar and restaurant business.”

Then a friend asked Brown if he knew how to podcast. For someone who had extensive experience in radio, worked as a tuxedoed ring announcer for pro wrestling in the late 1980s and once hosted a Saturday morning cartoon show as “Uncle G,”

podcasts weren’t a big leap.

“So, instead of the bricks and mortar,” he says, “we focused on building that archive of people in Colorado music history who have a story to tell. And it was very liberating to be inclusive instead of exclusive — which is what a Hall of Fame entails. That’s all political — who goes in, who goes out. I want to do things on merit.”

In addition to the site’s catalog of podcasts, there’s a robust selection of videos. Brown earlier had worked on what were essentially minidocumentaries that served as tribute videos for Hall of Fame inductions.

He expanded on that model to add visuals to dozens of other artist profiles.

“I spent the last two and a half years just building it up to where I think it’s a pretty compelling, and entertaining, repository for Colorado music history,” Brown says.

“The Colorado Music Experience is one of those passion projects,” says Jon Rizzi, editor of Colorado Avid Golfer and a collaborator with Brown. “And it’s kind of a cliché, but G.’s enthusiasm is totally contagious. Not only is he a very good student of the genres that he covers but he’s also just a fan. He loves music.

And you have to love something to really be a connoisseur.”

Cellists share soothing sounds

The great room at the Vita Littleton apartment community was filled with the mellow sound of six cellists on a recent Sunday afternoon as an ensemble from the Lone Tree Symphony performed for residents. Erin Christensen, Lisa Fugit, Andrea Meyers, Cynthia Norman, Barb Risner and Cherie Swisher played a varied program for an enthusiastic audience.

The program began with “Journey,” by Littleton composer and teacher Susan Day, who has been a violinist with the Arapahoe Philharmonic for 25 years.

Swisher says that small ensembles from the orchestra perform for various private gatherings to benefit the orchestra as a whole. (Vita residents contributed over $350.)

She added that the six cellists collectively have 121 years collectively of playing in an orchestra together and three of them are retired music educators (as are many other orchestra members.)

Following Day’s work, the program offered a variety of classical works, Irish folk music, Bizet’s “Habanera,” a polka arrangement, Offenbach’s “Can Can” and more — a light, pleasing assortment that allowed various ensemble members to shine.

The Lone Tree Symphony Orchestra is directed by a Jacinda Bouton, a Lone Tree resident, who has been principal conductor and music director of the orchestra since it premiered in 2000. The LTSO performs a season of programs at the Lone Tree Arts Center, 10075 Commons St. Like so many area musicians, members are thrilled to be rehearsing and performing together again. (While auditions are sometimes scheduled during the season, depending on need, usually they take place in May and August.) And, the orchestra maintains a list of

Bouton is also musical director of the Denver Concert Band and was formerly director of instrumental music at Denver’s George Washington High School. She is active as a conductor, clinician and adjudicator throughout the Rocky Mountain region. Bouton served as director of the Breckenridge Music Institute’s Summer Music Camp and director of the Denver Junior Police Band, which has appeared in Littleton’s Western Welcome Week Parade in years past.

The Lone Tree Symphony has announced its new season, (tickets are on sale) which begins Oct. 1 with Dvorak’s New World Symphony, which references our nation at a time when the composer was director of New York City’s National Conservatory of Music of America. The program will include Schubert’s Rosamunde Overture, selections from “South Pacific” and more, the LTSO website says.

Next in line will be “Together at Christmas” on Dec. 4 and 5, which will feature Vaughn Williams’ “Fantasia on Greensleeves” and a jolly visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus.

The orchestra starts 2022 on March 4, featuring Colorado Symphony’s Principal Violist Basil Vendryes in a viola concerto, plus Dvorak’s “Slavonic Dance,” Tchaikovsky’s “Marche Slave” and selections from “Fiddler on the Roof.”

school settings would pose “considerable risk” to family and others outside of the child care and school settings, especially for those at higher risk of complications from COVID-19, according to the health agency.

Following the Tri-County order, Douglas County’s three commissioners, the county’s elected leaders, unanimously agreed Aug. 19 to “opt out” of the mask order for schools, as it has for other Tri-County Health COVID-safety orders over the course of the pandemic.

But the county’s school district signaled that it plans to enforce previously announced indoor mask wearing rules anyway, with Douglas County School District Superintendent Corey Wise saying that under DCSD’s policies, the district must follow the TriCounty health order, regardless of whether county commissioners opt out.

As of press time for this newspaper, the district is requiring masks for students in preschool through sixth grade inside its school buildings, as well as for staffers who work with that age group.

If a county opts out of the school mask directive, school districts, schools and child-care facilities aren’t required to follow Tri-County’s mask order, but they are free to do so if they choose, said Jennifer Ludwig, deputy director of TriCounty Health. However, absent

a county government opting out, school districts, cities and towns in a county cannot opt out on their own, according to Mellissa Sager, Tri-County’s policy and public affairs officer.

At press time, Adams and Arapahoe counties had not opted out of the Tri-County order, so their schools are obligated to follow it under Tri-County’s interpretation.

Health over what they say was a violation of the state’s open meeting law by the agency when its board held a closed-door meeting to discuss the mask mandate. One commissioner said he hoped the action would invalidate the health board’s action.

Mask decision in spotlight Some in the community have expressed skepticism about masks, but the “evidence we have compiled suggests that the benefits of mask-wearing outweigh the risks,” Kaia Gallagher, president of the Tri-County board of health, said during the Aug. 17 meeting where the board voted on a mask order.

Masks limit the potential for a need to switch from in-person to remote classes, Gallagher argued.

Tri-County’s board of health is the policy-making body for the agency, composed of nine members — three each from Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties.

Tri-County had received more than 10,000 responses to an unscientific survey regarding whether to issue a mask mandate, according to numbers announced during an earlier meeting on Aug. 16 to

hear public comment.

More than 900 people signed up to speak for the Aug. 16 meeting.

Tri-County Health limited the comment segment of the meeting to about 90 minutes, so a small fraction of the total got to make comments. The number registered to view the Aug. 16 meeting over Zoom was 3,554, said Becky O’Guin, spokesperson for TriCounty Health.

It was unclear from the public comment session whether more of the potential speakers were for or against a mask order — TriCounty alternated between speakers who were pro- and anti-maskmandate.

In the survey results, about 62% of respondents in the three-county region did not support masking in schools, about 8% supported masking in indoor settings where there is a presence of anyone 11 or younger, and about 31% supported masking in all indoor school settings. (Results do not add up to 100% because of rounding.) The survey was open from Aug. 13 to Aug 16.

The survey “was not scientific — it was not random,” Gallagher said. “It was a listing of the opinions of the (people) who had very strong ideas about, both for and against, whether there should be a mask mandate in schools.”

Tri-County based its mask decision on data and “the advice of numerous health experts such as the Colorado Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics,” the health agency said in a news release.

Facing a fifth wave Tri-County’s decision comes as Colorado finds itself in its fifth wave of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations.

Statewide hospitalizations have spiked in the last few weeks, jumping from 266 confirmed COVID-19 patients on July 22 to 566 on Aug. 16. Daily deaths among those with COVID-19 in the past several weeks continued to outpace the recent lows seen in March, at times breaking into double digits.

The Tri-County board’s vote for the mask order for those aged 2 through 11 — and the individuals who interact with them — passed with on a 6-2 vote, after an earlier proposal to require masks indoors for all ages failed on a 4-4 tie.

Board member Zachary Nannestad abstained from voting because he is employed by one of the school districts that would be affected by the vote, he said. The Douglas County School District lists Nan-

A few parents in Tri-County’s Aug. 16 meeting raised concerns about mental health, including suicide, amid the pandemic.

Headlines that call attention to the pandemic’s effect on mental health are common. And while “no suicide rate, whether high or low, rising or falling, is acceptable,” says an article in the BMJ (under the British Medical Association), numbers from several countries suggest that suicide rates have not risen. The article, published in March, noted that the findings may change over time.

A summer staple for art lovers Art Students League of Denver’s Summer Art Market returns Aug. 28-29

Local artist Lauri Dunn has discovered a whole world of interesting insects through her art.

Her favorite is the praying mantis, she said. This is because of their “fun-looking heads,” Dunn added.

Dunn, of Denver’s Capitol Hill neighborhood, is a photographer and digital artist who creates abstract art pieces by digitally editing photographs of insects. She is one of nearly 100 artists participating in this year’s Summer Art Market — an event put on annually by the Art Students League of Denver.

Parker Farmers Market reaches midseason

Residents of Parker and beyond enjoyed some cloud cover as they explored the stalls of the town’s farmers market Aug. 15.

The weekly market has more than 100 vendors including four vegetable growers and three Western Slope fruit growers. Other things sold by vendors include bouquets, cutting boards, steaks, houseplants, kettle corn, burritos and pastries. Many of the booths are represented by local businesses from the Parker area.

The town government also has a stall at the farmers market where residents can learn more about the town’s various programs and talk with town council members about issues or news in their community.

On Aug. 15, councilmembers John Diak, Joshua Rivero and Todd Hendreks manned the booth, handing out bags and talking with market-goers.

That same day, the market was bustling as attendees brought their children and pets through the street.

The Parker Farmers Market season opened on May 9 and will run until October. It’s open every Sunday on Mainstreet downtown from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Veteran finds healing and meaning through farming She’s the lavender farmer at Denver Botanic Gardens’ Chatfield Farms site

For Zephrine Hanson, farming is healing. She believes a garden reflects your mental and physical health.

“Maybe I’m not giving myself enough water. Maybe I’m not being patient with the seeds I’ve planted.

Maybe I need to spend some more time getting the weeds out of my garden,” she said.

Zephrine Hanson is the lavender farmer at Denver Botanic Gardens’ Chatfield Farms site, near the Jefferson County section of Littleton.

While Hanson was very interested in farming at a young age, it took her a few decades to find her way to it.

Hanson joined the Air Force after high school and became a photojournalist. When she left the Air Force after eight years, her passion for health, healing, and wellness — for herself and her family — became a priority.

Hanson, her husband, and three children moved to Colorado, and she began talking with other veterans about her passions. A fellow veteran shared information about the Chatfield Farms Veterans Program that helps veterans develop valuable skills for a career in farming.

Hanson applied.

The program consists of what Hanson calls “university work” or “bookwork” as well as hands-on work with the plants. The time spent with plants was very healing for her, “even when it’s a bit noisy,” she said, laughing as a small plane hummed overhead.

During the program, the veterans worked with lavender, which Hanson already had a personal connection with: Her children had eczema when they were younger, and she frequently made them a natural body butter with the plant. While in the program, Hanson made it again as a gift — a gift of physical healing.

She asked her instructors what was going to happen to all the lavender, which is primarily used for display. “They said, ‘Go ahead, Zephrine, have at it,’” she recalled.

And so she became in charge of maintaining the lavandins — yes, lavandins. Lavandin is a naturally occurring hybrid of English lavender (the most well-known type) and Portuguese lavender.

While there are many differences between lavandin and lavenders, the most prominent are in size, oil production, and smell. Hanson explained that lavandin is generally taller, produces more oil (although considered lower quality), and smells more herbal, or “medicinal.”

Lavandins are also sterile.

Hanson also started her own farm after finishing the veteran’s program in 2017. Hampden Farms in southeast Denver is a “backyard micro farm and also a farm business,” she explained. Its mission, as stated on its website, “is to accelerate food security and community

wealth building ... through the investment in agricultural entrepreneurship, value-added crops and products.”

She quickly found how difficult it was to make a living as a farmer.

“And that’s unacceptable,” she declared. Through her farm, she hopes to be a source of community connection.

Working with organizations like Frontline Farming, East Denver Food Hub, and Mile-High Farmers, Hanson focuses on “how to grow a business while farming and make it profitable. Farmers should have thriving wages. Ag workers should have thriving wages.”

In this work, she weaves in her lavender. She is currently looking at how profitable lavender can be while collaborating with the farming community.

Profitability can be challenged by various factors. “We lost plants this year, right? So that’s going to impact how much money you can make with lavender,” she explained.

Through her connection with the gardens, she provides locallysourced lavender to companies and organizations in the area. Hanson hopes to continue collaborating with organizations that are already doing this work.

“They already have products,” she said. “They already are working on hubs. They do workshops and classes. What they do need is financial support. They don’t need anybody to tell them how to do it.”

Hanson believes that this work — community wealth building — is also a form of healing.

“All these things are connected.

Like that’s what people don’t understand…Everything you do in farming connects you to healing.”

Sixth-inning rally leads to win Arapahoe racks up another victory in rivalry with Heritage

Arapahoe scored early using the long ball but relied on manufacturing runs in a sixth-inning rally which led to an 11-9 victory over rival Heritage in a game played Aug. 20 at Arapahoe.

It was Arapahoe’s fifth straight softball win over Heritage in the Littleton crosstown rivalry and pulled the Warriors even in the series at 6-6 in games played since the 2009 season.

“Ever since I’ve been at Arapahoe we’ve always beaten Heritage and it’s always been a great game,” said Warriors senior shortstop Michelle Salazar, who went 3-for-4 with four runs batted in.

“I feel like I played my best,” she said. “It’s my senior year so I’m here to go all-out.”

Salazar belted a two-run homer in the third inning and drove in two more runs with a single to start a sixrun, sixth-inning outburst which erased a 7-5 deficit after the Eagles had rallied for five runs in the top of the sixth.

“Our players went up to the plate with a good approach and had good quality at-bats,” Arapahoe coach Josh Franklin said of the sixth inning in which the Warriors had four hits and one of them was a bunt as the team won its third straight game this season.

Heritage (2-2) had an error, three walks and three wild

pitches during the inning.

“When they got two strikes on them, they did a good job of fouling pitches off until they got a good pitch to handle,” added Franklin. “They did a good job of quality at-bat after quality at-bat.

“Heritage is a very good ball club this year. They did a great job or responding after they got down, came right back on us and put the pressure back on us. We were fortunate to come out on top.”

Taylor Miller had two hits and pitched seven innings for Arapahoe. She helped herself with a three-run home run in the fourth inning and got the final Heritage batter to ground out in the seventh inning with the tying run at the plate.

Lakyn Wilkinson had a double and had a two-run homer in the sixth inning rally in the Warriors’ 14-hit attack.

Heritage third baseman Darby Kramp was 3-for-3 and was walked intentionally. She belted a two-run homer in the top of the seventh as she raised her batting average to .727 after four games.

Jayden Winkler and Sophie Mangiameli had two hits each for Heritage.

“I thought the girls played good,” said Heritage coach Daron Schulthies. “Those three home runs killed us and they took advantage of it. We battled the whole game until the last out.

“We got the lead and then kind of got sloppy out there in the sixth inning, gave them a chance and they took advantage of it.”

Both teams raised money for the Fort Carson Emergency Relief Fund and players from both teams played for and recognized a military person. The players held signs for whom they were playing before the game.

The field was lined with blue, red and white foul lines and the umpires even had USA shirts. Highlands Ranch uniform jerseys had the names of all the U.S. armed forces branches on them.

CHSAA optimistic after stretch that hurt revenue Association’s leadership, staff looking for boost in corporate sponsorship

Colorado High School Activities Association Commissioner Rhonda Blanford-Green and her staff have endured many difficult months with canceled seasons and state tournaments, COVID-19 quarantines, protests, masks, a large dip in revenues and sports seasons being switched.

Now, the CHSAA is feeling optimistic about the upcoming 2021-22 seasons.

The COVID pandemic forced the boys and girls state basketball tournaments to be canceled in 2020 and all spring sports seasons were also called off which helped create a CHSAA revenue deficit of $500,000.

Masks were required Blanfordfor athletes and the Green limited amount of spectators were allowed last fall for seasons with abbreviated schedules. Some sports had their seasons moved but all sports wound up with 2020-21 state championship meets, matches and games.

“I knew what I had to deal with and we stayed focused on what needed to get done,” Blanford-

Green said Aug. 16 on CHSAA Media Day at Empower Field at Mile High. “The challenges were there but our office is competitive. We are going to focus on positivity and not be reacting to the stuff that’s out there.”

Some of the COVID-safety decisions were made by the state and not by the CHSAA, but people were polarized.

“The public, our legislators, some of our coaches and some of our community leaders make us realize why we are here which resulted in protests and it was said the CHSAA doesn’t get it,” she continued. “We get it. It’s student athletes, not athlete students.

“The public and parents and some of our administrators and some of our media want to exag-

gerate that athletics trumped education,” she said. “It became clear that we were going to have to look at what it meant. Nobody protested to me about cross country, nobody protested about volleyball. We had club volleyball playing indoors with masks but yet CHSAA couldn’t play.

“Nobody wrote a story about our girls. It was all about the 2.1% of kids that even played college football. We have more kids that get volleyball and soccer scholarships than football. We struggled with the inequities of the public fighting for one sport and not student leadership.”

CHSAA moved to the Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs. The state football championship games were played at CSU-Pueblo. The wrestling state championships were held at the Southwest Motors Events Center in Pueblo while the state baseball finals were played at All-Star Park in Lakewood. The soccer title matches were in Colorado Springs.

The CHSAA was notified that the Denver Coliseum will continue to be a shelter until the first of the year, meaning this season’s state volleyball tournament will have to be relocated again. The 4A/5A boys and girls basketball finals hope to be played at the Coliseum and the 4A/5A state football championship games are set for Empower Field.

The state wrestling tournament is seeking to return to Ball Arena.

This year, with the absence of executive public health orders from the state, local health departments and school districts will be making decisions on requirements for spectators and the number of fans allowed to watch. Jeffco, for instance, will require masks to be worn by fans at volleyball and gymnastics.

Blanford-Green said. “We had so many groups step up and say, ‘What do you need from us?’ And it tells you the World Arena, we walked in and every event we held, there was a guarantee to offset some of our costs. We had a bunch of groups out there say we never had the opportunity to be considered for a CHSAA event so we want to sweeten the pot.”

Without the state basketball tournaments and limited spectators allowed at other events, the CHSAA now faces a revenue shortfall that has Blanford-Green’s staff working to secure existing and new corporate sponsors.

“We are in a recovery mode financially,” Blanford-Green admitted.

“You get shut down in March and that’s one of your biggest revenue producers. You still have the overhead costs from renting those facilities and then you have spring sports with limited capacities. Our No. 1 goal is getting back to where we were prior to the pandemic. ...

Yeah, we’re about a half million dollars down.”

Garden is hub for charity, plant enthusiasts Members of Lone Tree group run composting, food bank

Phil Rahrig bustled from zucchini patches to green bean plants to sprawling cantaloupe, a watering hose in tow.

He once worked as the CEO of an international trade association.

Now retired, he spends much of his time at the Lone Tree Community Garden, tending to the same plot he’s had for three years. Rahrig amends the soil, so he likes to stay in the same spot.

“I’m trying cantaloupe for the first time this year,” he said.

The Lone Tree resident doesn’t just garden, but also serves on the garden’s board, which helps govern the 52 available plots located next to Lone Tree Elementary.

The garden, a Denver Urban Gardens affiliate, draws people for various reasons. A sustainabilityminded hobby. A respite from work.

The garden is also a hub for charity.

Members are required to spend two hours each month helping maintain the grounds. But on their own accord, gardeners rally each week to fill coolers with produce and donate it to the Covenant Cupboard Food Pantry.

Elizabeth Chandy organizes the food pantry effort.

“I am constantly looking for ways to reduce my carbon footprint,” she said by email. “Finding sustainable food options is big on my list, so apart from joining a local (community supported agriculture program), I started growing vegetables in my backyard and composting vegetable waste.”

She joined the sunny Lone Tree Community Garden because her backyard did not have sufficient light for good crops. After two years as a member, her garden plot began to flourish and produced more food than she could personally use.

Chandy realized other members had the same issue, and so she started gathering items for the food bank. She called her first drop-off

“an amazing feeling.”

The garden is sometimes a recipient of charity too.

Store manager at The Home Depot Brian Blecha was dropping his son off at Lone Tree Elementary when he noticed the garden’s fence looked worn. A few calls later, he and store employees were spending two days in July cleaning up the site with a grant through The Home Depot’s foundation.

“Home Depot takes pride in our community, we are always trying to be part of the community,” he said.

Crews stained the fence and built taller borders around each plot to stop soil that was spilling out. They donated tools to the tool shed for gardeners’ use. The store gave more than $7,000 worth of supplies and manpower to the garden, Rahrig said.

“This fall we’re actually going back again because we couldn’t do all of it with the plants already growing,” Blecha said.

It felt good to be back in the community after the pandemic stalled much of the store’s volunteer work, Blecha said. He also met more residents and was surprised to learn how many people garden at the site.

ing there four years. She proudly points out the memorial plot for a fallen veteran, the community plot, and one planted by students at the elementary school.

“Everybody in this garden has a different style,” she said.

Some people plant an all-vegetable garden. Some only plant flowers.

Others plant both. The garden is organic and people plant marigolds to help repel insects, Prusse said.

In Prusse’s plot grow white pumpkins, cucumbers, dahlias, onions, beets and spinach.

“I tried potatoes this year just for the heck of it,” she said.

Mostly, Prusse likes the socializing. She learns from other gardeners about new cultures and recipes she can try with the foods she plants.

The garden is full this year. More people usually have interest in a plot than what’s available, Rahrig said, although different gardeners get memberships each year as people come and go. He expects there will be seven to 10 plots available in April that will get filled up with new gardeners.

“When you pick tomatoes and zucchini in the afternoon and you have it for dinner, it’s hard to beat,” he said.

shows again,” Dunn said, adding that in normal years, 90% of her art income comes from selling her work at art fairs.

This is the third year for Dunn to participate in the Summer Art Market.

“It feels so good to be out and talking with people. I enjoy seeing the familiar faces and meeting new people.”

This is the 28th year for the Summer Art Market, which takes place on Aug. 28 and 29. It was canceled last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are excited to bring back the Summer Art Market,” said Harry Utter, event chair, in a news release, “as it is an opportunity to highlight the work of artists and share the mission of the Art Students League of Denver.”

The ASLD is a nonprofit arts organization that got its start in 1987. Today, it annually serves about 14,000 students of all abilities and ages through its various community engagement programs, and its fine arts classes, workshops, teen studios and summer camps.

“Something we’re passionate about,” said Tessa Crisman, communications specialist with the ASLD, “is that art is real work, and artists should get paid for it.”

What is unique about the Summer Art Market is that it showcases all the mediums that people can a take a

“The Summer Art Market is a staple of so many peoples’ summer,” Crisman said. “While the art market is different each year, it’s a touchstone that people always remember.”

Joe Higgins, a monotype artist and ASLD faculty member who lives in the Sloan Lake area, believes people in the Denver area like to decorate their homes with unique art.

But they especially enjoy being able to meet the local artist who created it, Higgins added.

The Summer Art Market has earned the reputation of being a good show to attend to buy art, Higgins said, and added there will be affordable price points for everyone.

Higgins has participated in at least 25 Summer Art Markets and he expects there will be a lot of positive energy at this year’s event.

“This show is focused on art,” Higgins said. “For us artists, it helps knowing that people who come (to it) are generally looking for art. It’s the type of show all artists want to do.” many aspects of this matter, Valor appreciates the contributions he has made to the student athletes in our volleyball program, and we wish him the very best in his future endeavors.”
