Developer proposes boutique hotel in Morrison Red Hotel proposal set for Feb. 13 planning commission hearing

An Evergreen developer has been working for a year on plans for a boutique hotel on Morrison’s main thoroughfare. Those plans are set for a public airing before the town planning commission at 6 p.m. Feb. 13 in the Morrison Town Hall.

Partners Chad Wallace and Zeke Freeman, principals with Roots Architecture and Development, plan a 21-room hotel that would also house their company offices, a café and rooftop patio. The new building, at 203 and 205 Bear Creek Avenue, would require

razing two retail shops and a garage.

The shops now house Rock ‘n Roses boutique and Blend smoothie café.

Brothers Jim and Charlie Kerr currently co-own the property, and are under contract to sell it to the developers.

“I just want to sell it, and let somebody do something good with it,” Jim Kerr said, adding that the buildings are about 150 years old and would require a large investment to upgrade.

“The property needs to be improved.”

Wallace sees a need for more lodging in Morrison and believes their proposed Red Hotel would benefit other businesses in town.

cording to a BBC Research and Consulting study.

Roots Architecture estimates the Red Hotel would bring $1 million to the town and its businesses, in retail, annual and parking revenues, along with property, sales and lodging taxes.

“We think this could be a gamechanger for all the business owners in Morrison,” Wallace said. “Red Rocks is one of the top music venues in the world, and there’s almost nowhere for people to stay close. People stay in Denver or Golden and will generally eat somewhere else, and then come to the concert. We’d rather people stay in Morrison, and eat in Morrison.”

On its website,Red Rocks Amphitheatre recommends a Golden hotel and nearby campsites as places to stay. It makes no mention of Morrison.

Wallace said Root Architects works in both the city and the mountains,

with its main office in Evergreen.

Plans for the hotel call for a twostory structure on Bear Creek Avenue, with an attached three-story building on the back. Wallace said the building will be “historically appropriate.”

“We’ve been working with the planning department for a year, and we’re trying to go above and beyond to be good neighbors,” Wallace said.

“We’re locals that want to invest and do something cool in Morrison. It’s a cool, funky little town, and we want to be there.”

The Canyon Courier reached out to several local businesses about the proposal. While some said they are opposed to it, none were willing to be quoted publicly.

Ater the planning commission holds its public hearing on the site development plan, the proposal is set to go before the town board on March 5.

Evergreen artist looks back on decades of work Nationally recognized Susie Hyer finds inspiration at her mountain home

At age 4, Susie Hyer knew she’d be an artist. Now at 69, she says she’ll never stop being one.

“I’m going to paint until I die,” said Hyer, sitting in her studio in the Circle K Ranch neighborhood high above Evergreen. “It’s a lifetime study for me.”

Hyer and her husband Jeff Peterson built the studio next to their home, where they’ve lived for nearly 30 years and raised two now-adult children. Their mountain property and the nature that surrounds it have served as a muse for nationally recognized artist Hyer.

“Just look at the light on those aspen trees,” she said, gazing through the windows of her studio on a late December afternoon. “Living here, it inspires me every day.”

Floor-to-ceiling windows illuminate Hyer’s studio, lighting the hundreds of oil paintings that fill almost every available space within it, along with easels, frames and magazines open to photographs that serve as inspiration.

Nature and landscapes are common themes in her work, though she has worked with a variety of materials and techniques.

“I’ve always been somebody that’s interested in learning, and this painting thing is so big,” she said. “There’s so much involved in the philosophies, composition, structure, and all of the other elements.

“One of the things that really turns me on about painting is composition and structure,” she continued.

“Putting that puzzle together, that intrigues me. I like the process. How you’re going to design a structure underneath the painting that the painting lies on top of.”

In her memory, her decades as a career artist started as a child in her home state of New Jersey.

“I was always painting, drawing and coloring,” she said.

And while no one else in her family painted, Hyer suspects her mother had the ability. She recalls drawing a figure and struggling with the nose.

it was flawless,” she said. “She was a homemaker but she was very creative in everything she did. She never had any training or opportunity to be more than a homemaker.”

Hyer studied art at Moravian University in Pennsylvania.

In 1976, art became her lifetime career, albeit one with a poorly defined road map.

“They didn’t teach you in art school how to make a living,” she said. “There’s no template, no business plan. It’s been me making my own opportunities.”

And figure it out Hyer did, working temporarily as a professional art model to help make ends meet — a side gig that ended when a former student joked in front of her husband that he failed to recognize Hyer with clothes on.

When the couple moved to New Orleans, Hyer was abruptly deemed head of the then-failing New Orleans chapter of the Women’s Caucus for Art. She not only turned the chapter around, she became a national vice president, charged with chapter development for the organization.

Having gained a national reputation in the art world, she left her ca-

reer to raise children in ’85. When she returned 15 years later, “nobody knew who I was,” she said.

As she did with the Women’s Caucus for Art, Hyer turned that around, too, rebuilding her career and regaining national attention. That rebuilding started by doing botanical illustrations for a Niwot-based seed company and quickly grew.

Today, her artwork is on display and for sale at galleries in Colorado Springs, Crested Butte, Sedona, Boulder and Santa Fe. Hyer does much of her work outside, as a regular on the plein air circuit from 2005 to 2022. During a plein air event, multiple artists are selected to paint outside at a specific town or venue for a limited number of days. A sponsoring organization typically sells the artwork as a fundraiser.

Artists are paid to travel, and hosts in the festival towns typically donate housing. But time is limited and demand is high. Artists are expected to produce multiple works in just a few days.

“The people who did this are amazing, and the hosts are so generous,” Hyer said. “But you pay with stress.”

From the end of September 2023 until January 2024, several of her works have been on display at the Grand Canyon National Park’s Kolb Studio. They were painted in September as part of the 13th annual Grand Canyon Celebration of Art, during which 25 national artists spent several days painting the park.

Sales of the artists’ work benefit the Grand Canyon Conservancy.

In addition to painting, Hyer is devoted to another endless pursuit — working to erase the disparity between men and women in the art world. Works by women are typically under-represented and undervalued in museums, galleries, and auction houses, and works by men generally sell for higher prices than those done by women.

“We have an immense disparity between men and women,” Hyer said. “We thought we made great strides for women in the ‘80s. But the disparity is still there.”

Hyer continues to evolve as an artist — even as she acknowledges one of her hands doesn’t grip as well as it once did, and that she is continually distracted by the decidedly non-creative business tasks that come with being a working artist.

“I’m trying to push more toward abstraction,” she said. “But what happens when and if I can’t hold a brush? And at what point do I stop doing the business end of it, and do more of the stuff I love? Life is art, and for me, the joy is the idea of creating something different each time.

There’s the part that makes money, and the part that keeps your soul on track.”

The gift of a lifetime for active Bear Mountain runner Thornton medical team repairs hole in Evergreen man’s heart

It’s a holiday tale tinged in shades of The Grinch. Except this heartwarming story is true. And unlike the green curmudgeon who lived high atop a lonely peak, Craig McCormack is a 52-year-old ultra runner and father of two who lives on Evergreen’s Bear Mountain.

His heart was not too small. Unbeknownst to McCormack, it had a hole in it. Likely a congenital defect, it existed — unnoticed — for 52 years until McCormack suffered a stroke.

Thanks to a Thornton doctor, inspired in his career by a family history of heart disease, McCormack’s heart is now whole. Dr. Qaisar Khan and his team performed the successful surgery at North Suburban Medical Center Dec. 12.

“I’m ready for the holidays, and I’m going to start running again,” he said. “My kids are happy. They keep telling me to slow down, but I’m a stubborn old man and I feel so good.”

It’s a world apart from how McCormack felt in the small hours of Aug. 24.

“I got up and couldn’t feel my left arm and leg, and I was slurring,” he

said. “It felt very weird.”

An MRI showed McCormack had suffered a stroke.

“I’m pretty active, so it was a bit of a shock,” he said. “I had no idea at the time what had caused it,” he said.

“But I was more worried about my kids at the time and focused on them. You start thinking about your living will, the financial side of things.”

Enter Dr. Khan

Shortly after his stroke, McCormack met a physician’s assistant at an Evergreen hikers’ gathering who works for Dr. Khan, an interven-

tional cardiologist with Thornton’s Advanced Heart and Vein Center. When he heard McCormack’s story, the assistant urged him to see Dr. Khan.

“A young guy who’s otherwise very active shouldn’t have a stroke,” Dr. Khan said. “There has to be a reason.

Most likely it’s a hole in the heart.

“And if it happened once, it’s going to happen again. It’s basically a ticking time bomb. The next event could be life-threatening or complete disability. It needs to be closed.”

Khan’s passion for heart care stems from heart disease in his own family. His grandfather suffered a fa-

tal heart attack at 48. His father also had a heart attack at 52 but survives today, with the help of three stints.

“Almost everybody in my family has heart disease,” Khan said. “But when my grandfather had his heart attack, they didn’t have stints. That’s how my dad is alive, and it’s why I think a lot of us are living longer.”

I Bought Some Jeffco Property Tax Liens at Auction; Here’s What I Learned

In Colorado, if you haven’t paid your property taxes by June, your county sells the resulting tax lien at auction a few months later. In Jefferson County, that auction was held online over Nov. 6 and 7, and I decided to buy a few in Golden, where I live, to learn about the process so I could share it with you, my readers.

This year, 85 other buyers and I purchased a total of 1,130 tax liens totaling $6.4 million, paying a premium of $400,415 or 6.25% more overall than what was actually owed in property taxes plus accrued interest and fees by the property owners. The county treasurer received the $6.4 million on behalf of the properties’ respective tax districts, and the $400,415 went to the county’s general fund.

The reason people purchase tax liens is to pocket the 15% interest that is added to the taxes owed. When the property owner “redeems” his property, he basically pays the lien holder the amount of the lien plus interest from the date of the sale through the date of redemption.

Thus, if the taxpayer takes a year to pay it, I earn 15% interest minus the premium which I paid. If he redeems it soon after I have purchased the lien, I

lose money depending on how much I bid up the lien amount.

I chatted with a fellow lien buyer and learned his technique for making money on tax liens. He researches each property owner to determine whether he’s likely to pay quickly, slowly, or not at all. For example, was he delinquent in prior years?

I didn’t do any of that research, so I have no idea whether a year or two from now I will be counting my profits or my losses on the four liens I purchased. I’ll chalk up any losses to the cost of publishing this column!

Statistically, 7% of tax liens are redeemed within a month of the sale, 22% within 3 months, and 38% within 6 months. It’s been two months since the sale, and none of my four tax liens have been redeemed. All but 4% of purchased tax liens are redeemed within 4 years.

In the next column is a chart showing how many tax liens were sold at auction since 2001, so you can see that this year’s numbers are not much different than in prior years. The $6.4 million figure is higher than last year, but can be attributed in part to the increase in assessed valuation of Jeffco properties.

I was impressed at how easy it was for buyers to participate.

the womb — but most close 2-3 minutes after birth.

For about 25% of people, that doesn’t happen. And for most of them, the condition never causes a problem, or is even a known condition. But for patients like McCormack, who suffer a mild stroke or symptoms like severe shortness of breath, action needs to be taken.

The life-changing procedure to repair the hole is typically done in less than an hour.

“To me, the most important thing is that you can prevent another stroke,” Dr. Khan said. “Imagine someone who has another 40-plus years to live, suffering a stroke and living those years with a physical disability, perhaps not even being able to talk. The burden of stroke on our society is huge.”

Khan conducts about 20 such surgeries each year. Each is gratifying.

“Somebody saying thank you is the biggest reward,” he said. “And if you can change somebody’s quality of life, allow someone to continue having a quality of life, that is priceless. That’s why I get up in the morn-

ing.”

Looking to the New Year

McCormack, who was conscious and watched Dr. Khan and his team perform his surgery, left the hospital feeling “amazing.” He continues to feel that way.

“I got dressed, left, went and had sushi and Starbucks, stopped at Home Depot and then went home,” he said. “I get yelled at because I should be lying in bed, taking it easy, but I feel normal and I just want to do things outside.”

Instead of focusing on end-of-life preparations, McCormack is now planning the next phase of his life.

While he’s already checked off 50- and 100-mile runs as well as the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim (R2R2R) — a double crossing of the Canyon known as one of the most famous ultramarathon routes in the world — there’s a world-renowned challenge closer to home he aims to conquer as well.

“The Leadville 100 is on my bucket list before I turn 60,’” he said, referring to a 100-mile mountain trail run known for its ruggedness and dramatic ascents and descents. “I plan to start running again in the spring.

“It’s definitely a good start to 2024.”

Active4All, which organizes the lake plunge, uses it as its main fundraiser for INSPIRE and other Evergreen Park & Recreation District programs.

Board President John DuRussel said the plunge raises at least $25,000 annually for these programs; and while 2024’s plunge had record participants, it also had fewer sponsors, he confirmed.

volunteers and participants for all their support. He was excited to see Evergreen continue this New Year’s Day tradition and hoped the 2025 plunge would see similar success.

As usual, the plunge participants were a mix of Evergreen locals and folks who made the traveled up from the Denver area. Many wore costumes that ranged from superheroes to food items to fairy tale characters.

Whether they were newcomers or plunge veterans, many were eager to start 2024 in a fun, community-focused way.

e’re a curious species, we Homo sapiens. Among the billion-plus species that have gone extinct and those with whom we now share Earth, some precariously close to extinction, we’re the only ones, as far as I can determine, that believe we’re exempt from the laws of nature. But the truth is we’re like every other animal when it comes to survival and continuation of the species. And extinction is part of that natural phenomena.

Perhaps the dinosaurs thought they were exempt from natural law.

After all, they ruled the planet for over 175 million years. They even had a fierce king: the Tyrannosaurus Rex. But he along with nearly all his minions got fricasseed in a firestorm, choked to death on noxious gasses, or got swept away by tsunamis in Earth’s Fifth Mass Extinction when a comet the size of Mt. Everest gut-punched Mother Earth. Such are the vagaries of the universe.

If one steps back from the bedlam engulfing us and takes a grand view of the totality of Earth’s history, they should be in awe, even humbled.

And disconcerted. Because of the hundreds of millions of species that have roamed the land, swam in the seas, and flew in the sky, we’re the only ones with the knowledge, capability, and most scarily, willingness to destroy not only ourselves but

VOICES Putting it into perspective also the environment that sustains us.

To help put American history into perspective as well as their place and role in it, I had my eighth-grade students draw a series of lines across an eighteen-inch Columnist sheet of tagboard and plot dates from the birth of Earth to present day on them. Each subsequent line was a closeup of a portion of the timeframe from the line above. As you might imagine, it was quite an exercise, an eye-opener especially that even within the few thousand years of documented human history, America’s history took up little space, and their few years a fraction of it.

I recalled that activity when watching the Netflix series, “Life on Our Planet.” In the series, a timeline is used to help move viewers through the epochs chronologically and put the epochs into perspective. It caused me to wonder how long a roll of paper I’d need if I created a timeline from the birth of the Earth 4,000,000,000 years ago to now if one foot equaled a century. The answer: 7,575 miles, which is nearly the diameter of Earth. Next I wondered how much space on the 7,575-

mile—forty-million-foot—length I’d have to plot the significant dates and stretches of my life. Given that I’ve lived for about three quarters of a century, I calculated I’d have nine inches. Finally, I wondered what percentage of the timeline I’d occupy. The answer: 0.00000001875 percent.

Of course, a 7,575 roll of paper is neither realistic nor workable, so I pictured a more manageable one of 400 feet, where one foot equaled 40,000,000 years. I imagined plotting these significant dates, from a human point of view, onto it: (Note: Some scholars posit different dates and timeframes for the various epochs.)

First oceanic life forms: 2,000,000,000 years Plant Life on Land: 450,000,000 years Rise of the Dinosaurs: 245,000,000 years Death of the Dinosaurs: 66,000,000 years Earliest humans – Homo habilis: 2,000,000 years Rise of Homo sapiens: 100,000 years First Agricultural Revolution: 12,000 years Founding of the American Republic: 250 years My Life Span As you might have calculated, the entirety of humanoid history would take up an infinitesimally small space on that 400-foot timeline. And my life, your life?

Could we go the way of the dinosaurs? It would be folly to think otherwise. Perhaps the comet that

Not big on decrees, especially from her sister, Jan “ran at” and “shoved” Marcia, and may or may not have caused her to “hit the door with my elbow.” Jan remembers it differently, telling deputies that Marcia took her clothes out of the dryer and threw them on the floor, at the same time forbidding Jan to use either machine from then until the end of time. When Jan rushed forward to rescue her soggy apparel, Marcia “slammed my foot” maybe “a dozen times.” Since the siblings’ couldn’t get together on a single story, and since neither appeared the worse for wear, deputies declared the dustup done.

CONIFER – The Keaton family game night was off the hook on Nov. 18. Mallory interrupted an especially absorbing round of Monopoly to demand the car keys so she could “go to the drug store.”

Mallory’s parents, Steven and Elyse, thought it better she didn’t drive after dark. Mallory “became upset,” saying she didn’t even know where the nearest drug store was. “Google it,” advised her brother, Alex, curtly.

“Stay out of it!” Mallory yelled at Alex. “Don’t yell at me!” Alex yelled back. Mallory continued yelling at Alex, prompting him to “put her in a body lock” and drag her downstairs to her bedroom. A few

And then there is environmental degradation and AI: Artificial Intelligence. There is conjecture it could lead to our own extinction. I cannot authoritatively speak to that, but I can about the capabilities of human folly. I just look at and read the news.

Looking at it from that grand macro perspective, I’ve concluded that I’m merely a microscopic dot when calculating my time and space relative to the whole. Understanding that, I asked myself what I will do with this precious gift — conscious life — that I have remaining, especially with 2024 approaching with its dire prospects.

It sure as heck won’t be engaging in base human actions like judging, killing or denigrating others in the name of some creed, ideology, or other complex. Rather it will be spent celebrating life by doing uplifting stuff like writing, hanging with friends, and reflecting on what my — and our — place is in the grand scheme and whether by our choices and machinations we will bring about the Sixth Mass Extinction.

After pleasantly treading the trails, Heidi called JCSO to accuse WanSi-da of vehicular assault. Heidi said ht:she’d been “in fear for my life” and eswas forced to “jump out of the way” of Wanda’s careening Honda Civic.

Witnesses to the skirmish remembered it somewhat less dramatically, assuring officers that nobody’s health or well-being had been imperiled. Deputies parked the case indefinitely.

CONIFER – She said her former roommate had robbed her, and she was getting pretty sick and tired of deputies refusing to fill out a theft report. Not wishing to deny himself the probative benefits of previous investigations, the deputy took a moment to review the aforementioned reports and learned that her complaint had repeatedly been deemed a civil matter, largely because she couldn’t seem to decide exactly what had been allegedly stolen. Not true! she declared, confidently and categorically accusing her room-

mate of making off with a wooden dresser, an envelope full of money that had been on her desk, a $20 bill that had been sitting in a basket in the kitchen, a coffee machine, four blue folding chairs with sumptuous vinyl cushions, two large citronella candles, a clip-on book light, a camera charging cord and a matchbook commemorating her failed marriage. Again referring to previously filed reports, the officer pointed out that her roommate had already been questioned, had denied taking any of her property, and had consented to a search of his car which had come up empty. Since his colleagues had already determined that the case was a civil matter, and not wishing to re-state the obvious, the deputy wrote up her re-complaint as a suspicious incident.

CONIFER – With a small ocean of grog under her belt and visibly listing, Mary Brewster told deputies on Nov. 22 that her boyfriend, Myke Standish, was oppressing her. According to Mary’s liquid-fueled yarn, Myke had been busting her chops about Thanksgiving, complaining about “how much I spent on groceries” and that she should “stop trying to be a perfectionist.” In storming out of the room, Mary said, Myke may or may not have “shoved me.” Given opportunity for rebuttal, Myke said Mary, who treats every Thanksgiving like the landing at Plymouth Rock, had been busting his chops because he “wasn’t acting festive enough.”

When Mary started tapping the cask, Myke knew it was time he set sail, and said so. “Fine!” Mary reportedly shouted. “I’m calling the police!”

Seeing no cause for official action, deputies deep-sixed the case.

What lies beneath

PINE – It was a simple job. Parking his work truck in the residential driveway on the morning of Nov. 20, the technician knocked on the door and politely asked the resident for permission to locate some buried utility lines that ran across the estate.

The resident graciously offered Technician free run of the both grounds and undergrounds, and the technician went to work. His task was complicated a short time later when a man in a pickup truck pulled up behind his work truck and got out angry. Wendell Richard Huggins

June 30, 1934 - December 24, 2023

Andrea married and moved to Evergreen in December of 1969.

Wendell Richard Huggins, 54 year resident of Evergreen, passed peacefully at home in his sleep early on December 24th.

Wendell began investing in real estate in the Evergreen area right away, renovating old homes, and building others in Evergreen, Kittredge and on Floyd Hill. He began building Evergreen Industrial Park on Bryant Drive in 1996, and Evergreen Artisan Park in 1999 with a business partner.

Wendell was born in rural Iowa in 1934. He was one of 8 siblings, children of tenant farmers, and he lived on four different farms throughout his childhood. Wendell graduated from high school in Pulaski, IA in 1952.

After High School Wendell worked with paving crews, pipeliners and other odd jobs to put himself through college at Iowa State University, majoring in Industrial Engineering, and graduating in February, 1959. After college, Wendell served in the U.S. Army reserves before relocating to Colorado.

Wendell worked most of his career in the tunnel and heavy construction contracting business, and it was at work that he met his wife-to-be, Andrea, in 1967. Wendell and

LIFE Wringing out the new year Dry January attracts sober curious

hile it’s long been trendy for New Year’s resolutions to focus on improving health, a growing group of people is tackling that goal by participating in Dry January.

Dry January is a 31-day challenge to not drink any alcoholic beverages, serving as a sort of cleanse after the winter holidays when it’s common to drink more excessively. According to a February 2023 poll from CivicScience, 16% of American adults abstained from alcohol last year for the challenge.

There’s a multitude of physical and mental health benefits from cutting out alcohol, even temporarily, said Jill Hefti Breed, a family nurse practitioner at AdventHealth, such as better sleep, improved blood pressure, reduced indigestion and potential weight loss.

Hefti Breed cited a 2018 study on Dry January participants that corroborated the advantages of going alcohol-free.

“By week one, you’re sleeping better, you have better decision-making, you’re more creative and you tend to have better eating patterns,” she said. “The liver gets a chance to clear out fats, which even for a month can be quite beneficial. We also see that with the stomach if it’s inflamed from alcohol.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends women limit drinking to one drink per day and men limit drinks to two per day.

Hefti Breed said even drinking the recommended amount comes with a higher risk for some cancers.

She pointed to break periods, like Dry January, as a tool to evaluate how alcohol impacts an individual’s quality of life.

“Don’t be afraid to talk to your health care provider and ask questions because you won’t be labeled and there’s no dumb questions,” Hefti Breed said.

Kayla Phillips, general manager at Golden Moon Speakeasy, said her own experience with Dry January prompted her to create a mocktail program at the bar in 2021 that focuses on maintaining the experience that comes with drinking craft cocktails.

Options for teetotalers at Golden Moon aren’t the typical bitters and soda water or juice mixes that most bars offer. That’s because the mocktails, which are crafted with housemade ingredients, include mimics of

the bar’s popular original drinks and unique combinations of teas, syrups, juices and sodas.

“I wanted to make drinks that were clearly intentional,” she said. “For the house classics that are a staple on our menu, I wanted to make nonalcoholic twins of those so it doesn’t even have to look like you’re not drinking.”

Phillips said her goal with her mocktail options is to make it worth the value and equal in experience to a cocktail.

For example, the bar serves a drink called Phoenix Down, which is a play on a smoked whiskey old fashioned that comes in both alcoholic and alcohol-free options. Both options come with a fancy presentation where the drinks are smoked and served tableside.

“When we pour the drink from the bottle (it’s mixed in) to the glass, the smoke comes out before the liquid does and gives a really cool effect,” Phillips said. “It adds a wow factor and I think especially when people order nonalcoholic, they’re not expecting a full show.”

Since the speakeasy started offering its nonalcoholic options, they have gotten more popular across a broad spectrum, Phillips said.

“It’s not only people who are interested in only mocktails, but it’s a good option for people who aren’t trying to drink all night or want to alternate,” she said. “I see more mocktail orders in these months because I think people get overwhelmed with holiday drinking obligations.”

This January, Phillips is supporting her customers who have health resolutions by creating a seasonal menu of drinks, with and without liquor, that use less sugar and highlight superfoods, such as a carrot turmeric tonic.

For Dry January participants who want to avoid the temptation of a bar, but still want to enjoy group activities and social events, The Phoenix provides in-person and online sober get-togethers throughout the state.

Vince Huseman, community engagement manager for The Phoenix, said the concept started in Boulder in 2006 with the desire to maintain an active social life without substances. Volunteers organize fitness and entertainment activities, such as CrossFit, comedy nights, dance parties and hikes, all across the state that are free for sober participants.

Huseman said the events are inclusive of people who are in recovery, fully sober, sober-curious and sober allies. He added that activities are accessible to people of all abilities and skill levels. The only participation requirement is to be sober for 48 hours before the event.

“We make our events accessible for everyone and will tailor activities so that even folks with no experience can participate,” Huseman said. “Folks will come for our events that we lead, but I think they stay for the community.”

The group works to build a community of people who don’t imbibe in an effort to make the choice to not drink easier and help reduce stigma around sobriety and recovery, Huseman said.

“I think when you’re with other people who are also sober or evaluating their relationship with alcohol, it helps you build a foundation for your sobriety,” he said. “Some of the events we’ve produced, such as our Denver Pride dance party, are really setting a new standard for sober fun.”

On Jan. 25, The Phoenix is hosting its third annual open mic night, featuring a dozen performers with music, comedy and poetry at Free Spiritual Community in Denver. Huseman said he recommends the event to anyone interested in joining The Phoenix for the first time.

Sweet Heat Barbeque Wild Turkey Bites Ingredients: • 1 boneless, skinless turkey or chicken breast, approximately 2 pounds, cut into 1-inch pieces • 1 tablespoon chili powder • 1 teaspoon paprika • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper • 1 tablespoon loosely-packed light brown sugar • 1 package center-cut bacon, cut in half • Sliced green onions • Ranch dressing • Chef’s Choice or Butcher’s Blend Bear Mountain BBQ Pellets • 1/2 cup sweet barbecue sauce • 2 tablespoons buffalo sauce • 1 tablespoon minced garlic Directions: 1. Preheat grill to 400 degrees F. 2. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.

3. Place 1-inch turkey pieces into a medium size bowl. Sprinkle chili powder, paprika, cayenne, garlic salt, black pepper and brown sugar over top. Mix well.

4. Wrap half a slice of bacon around each turkey piece. Secure with a toothpick and place them onto the parchment paper.

5. Place the baking sheet into your

preheated grill and bake for 25 minutes.

Meanwhile, combine the barbecue sauce, buffalo sauce and garlic in a small bowl.

Brush the turkey pieces halfway through cooking. Brush another layer of sauce five minutes before the cook time is over.

Cook until the turkey pieces reach 165 degrees F. 6. Garnish with sliced green onions and serve with ranch dressing for dipping.

Beer Cheese Dip Ingredients: • 1 1/2 cups cheddar cheese grated • 1/2 cup gruyere cheese grated • 8 ounces cream cheese softened • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard • 1/2 of a 1-ounce Hidden Valley Ranch Packet • 2 tablespoons green onions chopped.

• 1/4 cup German lager beer • 2 tablespoons baking soda

• 1 can biscuits • 1 large egg, mixed with 1 tablespoon water, for brushing biscuits • 12-inch cast iron skillet • Bear Mountain BBQ’s Chef’s Choice Blend pellets Directions: 1. Preheat pellet grill to 350 degrees F. 2. In large bowl, combine 1 cup cheddar, gruyere, cream cheese, Dijon mustard, Hidden Valley Ranch seasoning, beer and 1 tablespoon green onions.

Mix evenly.

3. Cut biscuits in half. Roll each half into a ball, then slice an X across top.

4. Boil 2 cups water in medium saucepan. Once boiling, add baking soda and mix immediately.

5. Add biscuits to grill in batches and cook until puffy, approximately 1 minute.

Remove and transfer to skillet, forming ring along inside edge.

6. Brush biscuits with egg wash.

Sprinkle with salt.

7. Transfer dip to center of skillet.

Sprinkle with remaining cheddar.

8. Smoke until biscuits are golden and dip is bubbly, 30-35 minutes.

9. Garnish with remaining green onions. Serve!

According to his report, he’d received a USPS delivery notice on Nov. 14, but no clips. As the postal carrier frequently places packages “too large to fit through the slot” on top of his mailbox, he assumed it had been removed from that location by opportunists unknown. The magazine company told him he’d need to file a police

report in order to obtain a refund, occasioning his call to the cops.

Deputies took his report, but the case is still hanging fire.

A big factor in the win was the Pirates’ ability to find the open man in the halfcourt offense. Nonemacher said that was a point of emphasis going into the game.

“We’ve watched film. We’ve had open men all the time,” he said. “We get selfish and we try and put the team on our shoulders, but we’ve been working on moving the ball.

They moved the ball well tonight. We still took a couple bad shots but not nearly as many as we have (this season), and it’s amazing what happens when you take better shots.”

The Pirates hit six 3-pointers in the first half to lead 37-22 at the half.

The Lobos battled early in the second half and went on several runs the Pirates were able to withstand.

A breakdown in defensive intensity

“Second half was pretty intense,” Raff said. “We were the aggressor and that’s what we needed to be, so I was pleased with that. We need to learn to ratchet that up and be more consistent throughout the whole game.”
