Conifer robotics team changes Denver teen’s life Team Blitz rebuilds and donates wheelchair to handicapped youth, allowing him to attend school

The wheelchair had been left on the side of County Highway 73 near Conifer High School, its seat worn, battery dead and a “free” sign affixed to it. Where most people may have seen trash, Mindy Hanson and her son Rhys saw possibilities. They stopped and loaded the wheelchair into their car.

That October 2022 decision transformed a handicapped Denver teen’s life.

nifer High School, home of robotics club Team Blitz. Rhys Hanson is a member, along with 8-12th grade and home-schooled students from

the Conifer, Evergreen and Platte Canyon area.

Each year, Team Blitz members participate in the FIRST Robotics Competition, together designing, building, testing and competing with their team robot. Most members have an interest in mechanical or electrical engineering, programming or marketing, so the challenge of rebuilding a wheelchair was a welcome one.

“We unloaded the wheelchair, and the next thing I knew, the students had almost completely disassembled it,” said Mindy Hanson, a club mentor. “They were busy cleaning it and assessing what needed to be repaired.

Evergreen Metro District to face the future with a new general manager connection. It’s based on the amount of water the business uses, which he called a more forward-thinking way of looking at water consumption.

EMD also is concerned with what is called “fire flow,” which is the amount of water that will flow from water hydrants in case of a fire, and ensuring the system can provide the necessary water in emergencies.

Technology continues to improve, which allows the districts to operate more efficiently, and as regulations change, EMD changes with them.

The work of the Evergreen Metro District is like water flowing over a dam … literally.

The district, which provides water and sewer service to parts of Evergreen, is starting its 45th year, and it is getting a new general manager after Dave Lighthart, who has been with the district since 1985, retires in January. Jason Stawski will take the district’s helm.

Working for a metro district might not sound exciting, but the work is important and necessary. It is evident that the 30 staff members are dedicated to making sure residents have safe water to drink, and waste is properly treated and disposed of.

Nine small water districts in the Evergreen area consolidated — the latest in 2016 — to be part of three metro districts: EMD, the West Jeffco Metro District and the Kittredge Sanitation District. While each of the three districts has its own board, collectively they are known as EMD. The metro districts are vital to homes

One of the biggest challenges for the district is the age of some pipes, especially those installed as early as the 1940s. It would be too costly to dig up roads to replace them, grant funding is limited, and the districts don’t want to ask voters for additional money, so replacement occurs as pipes break.

The good news is the district doesn’t have any lead pipes, and there are no water quality concerns

Evergreen rec district receives a grant to eradicate weeds

The Evergreen Park & Recreation District will be able to weed out some of the noxious plants at its parks in 2024 thanks to a Great Outdoors Colorado grant.

The rec district received $77,700, which will allow it to partner with the Mile High Youth Corps to use herbicides and hand-pulling to complete weeding projects at Buchanan, Marshdale, Stagecoach and Kittredge parks and at Evergreen Lake.

A crew of eight youth corps members will work 40 hours a week for seven weeks to complete the work,

according to Liz Cohen, the rec district’s grants and strategy manager.

“Eradicating some of the invasive species will help us get on top of controlling it for future years,” Cohen said. “The goal for us is to perpetuate this so from year to year, we can do a better job with eradication and mitigation. That’s a part of wildfire mitigation, too, and we can do our part.”

Rec district officials will work with Jeffco Open Space, which owns the Kittredge Park property, and Denver Mountain Parks, which owns the Evergreen Lake property, to create plans to do the work at those two parks. Officials

will create weed-eradication plans in the parks the rec district owns.

Between 1998 and 2012, volunteers from Evergreen Audubon, the Evergreen Garden Club and the Sierra Club met twice a year to pull weeds at Evergreen Lake, and they taught others about noxious weeds.

Evergreen resident Linda Kirkpatrick said in a letter supporting the grant application: “Within a few years, through inattention, thistles invaded the parkland to such a degree that areas around Evergreen Lake were an eyesore rather than a picturesque surrounding for our prime gathering place for locals and visitors — the Lake House.”

In 2016 Kirkpatrick organized a one-day “Thistle Do” event, and several dozen people attended with gloves and tools to attack the overgrown thistles. However, since then, little has been done to eradicate the weeds.

When Kirkpatrick she walks around Buchanan Park, she brings nippers and a trash bag to collect noxious weeds in the warmer months.

“I understand EPRD is planning to address the situation with the help of a youth corps at several Evergreen parks,” Kirkpatrick said in her support letter. “I believe this effort will increase public awareness and spur renewed volunteerism.”

Controversial Building Proposal in Lakewood Is About More Than Birds

The Dec. 24th Sunday Denver Post had a lengthy article on its business pages about a 412-unit apartment building being proposed by a Texas developer for a 5-acre site adjoining Belmar Park (see satellite image at right).

The focus of the article was on the birders who are fighting the project as best they can, given that the public and city council have no say in Lakewood when it comes to development.

That’s right — no say in any proposal to build on private property so long as it complies with zoning. The City Council doesn’t even have a say on subdividing land, although it’s a review body for appeals on major subdivisions. This project is on a single 5-acre owned parcel and, because it’s zoned multifamily, the owner could build a 12-story apartment or mixed-use building if he wanted. The developer, Kairoi Residential of San Antonio, is proposing a 6-story apartment building — still taller than most buildings in downtown Lakewood.

The City of Lakewood has ceded all regulation of such projects to its planning department. The planning director could, if he wanted, submit this project to the city’s planning commission for hearings and debate, but he has chosen not to, despite the controversy.

Anita Springsteen (below) served a 4year term on the Lakewood City Council through November. She decided not to run for re-election because the council has no power. Once she was told by the city attorney that council members are like citizens and that she had no more right to the information she was requesting than an ordinary citizen.

One such citizen, Mark Smith, made a Colorado Open Records Act (CORA) request for such information and was told that it would take 149 staff hours to produce the information and would cost him over $5,000.

Mark is a retired city planner and he said that he knows of no other jurisdiction which provides literally no public process for approving significant development proposals. The City of Golden has a process that could be a model for Lakewood and any other city. Check out

Lakewood has an ordinance requiring any developer to set aside parkland in proportion to 5 acres per 1,000 added population. For the Belmar Park development, that formula should require 3.5 acres, but the entire parcel is only 5 acres, so the director of community resources is allowing the developer to pay the city $254,545 per acre in lieu of that requirement. Again, no public or legislative say in that decision and, of course, no hearing. The planning commission would hold hearings; the planning director just decides.

Anita Springsteen moved that the city manager deny the in-lieu fee, but Mayor Paul said, “I’m not going to allow a vote on an illegal motion.” How is that?

It was unannounced, and no recording was made.

Instead, facilitator hired by the city took notes. Those notes did not include the names of any of the attendees.

The planning department’s web page for the project says bluntly, “This property has had this property right to build multistory uses for a long time, and courts have been quite clear that elected officials and cities can’t impinge or impede a private property owner’s property rights allowed under a ‘use by right.’ Courts have viewed efforts to do this as a ‘taking’ of property rights.”

Further, the web page says that “the proposed development will occur solely through the administrative process managed by the Planning Department.

will review the development to ensure it is meeting the city’s regulations for setbacks of the building, heights, green space requirements, landscaping, etc.”

In 2019, Lakewood’s voters approved the Strategic Growth Initiative which imposed a 1% growth limit, patterned after a similar law in Golden. That law also included a provision that projects of 40 units or more should go to the city council for approval, although that has not been followed, as far as I can tell.

In the wake of 2023 legislation outlawing growth limits statewide, the city council repealed the Strategic Growth Initiative and then re-passed it with a 2year sunset provision, meaning that it dies unless the council (or voters) vote to retain it. Curiously, the new law retained the 1% growth limit, but it sunsets along with the rest of the law in 2025. I asked why the 412-unit Belmar Park project doesn’t violate the 1% growth limit. It’s because the original designation of the downtown/Villa Italia district as “blighted” exempts that area from the limitation, even though it’s hardly blighted nowadays.

By now you’ve probably guessed that the majority of city council members are pro-growth or even pro-developer.

I interviewed Ramey Johnson, who served on Lakewood’s city council from 2010 to 2020, and she couldn’t think or any jurisdiction in which the governing body has ceded its authority over development to administrative staff the way Lakewood has. “It’s wrong,” she told me. She says that council has incrementally relinquished its power to administrative staff over many years.

She told how in 2003, in response to “angst” over CCU students living in residential areas, council passed an ordinance defining a “Student Living Unit.”

When the zoning ordinance was rewritten in 2012, Ramey noticed that definition had been deleted without pointing it out to the city council. Travis Parker, the director of planning, responded, “It wasn’t needed anymore.”

“The staff simply took out something that was voted by City Council,” Ramey said. “What else was deleted?”

Lakewood has among the lowest paid elected officials and highest paid staff of any city its size. City council members make $12,000, the mayor makes about $40,000, but the city manager makes about $350,000 (with benefits), and the department heads, like Parker, make over $200,000. Council members have no staff and no expense accounts. “We even have to buy the coffee for our ward meetings,” Anita Springsteen told me.

“This is a recipe for corruption,” She has studied the campaign finance disclosures of her fellow councilors and the mayor and told me that the lawyer representing the developer made a campaign contribution to Mayor Paul — and after the election, the chairman of her firm, Norman Brownstein, made a contribution to Paul’s campaign despite the fact that Paul was then term-limited.

No building permit has been issued yet for the Belmar Park development.

But nothing’s really stopping it.

Evergreen’s Troop 888 bids farewell to Scoutmaster Goldenberg

A recent Boy Scout Court of Honor was filled with gratitude, thankfulness and a few tears as Scouts and families in Troop 888 said goodbye to beloved Scoutmaster Mitch Goldenberg.

The meeting was a tribute to the impact Goldenberg has had on the Scouts since he joined the troop in 2010 and became head scoutmaster in 2016.

Shane Ruggles is the new head scoutmaster as Goldenberg retires from his position.

Eagle Scouts who were asked to describe Goldenberg called him steadfast, loyal, relentless but fair, patriotic, loud, a mentor, kind, honorable, a candy bar — hard on the outside and soft on the inside — and “a crafter of character with a bunch of characters.”

Keith Leswing, Troop 888’s committee chair, said the words “thank you” didn’t adequately describe the troop’s gratitude to Goldenberg for all he has given the troop. While Goldenberg’s mantra was “No Scout is left behind,” he knew how to provide tough love when warranted. For Goldenberg, failure was never an option.

“You made sure everyone had fun and did it safely,” Leswing added.

what they use to build their robots. It was a lightbulb for these kids to see that what they’re learning in robotics can also be used outside the lab,” she continued.

Conifer High School junior Hannah Stauffer worked on the wheelchair and said the team dug into the unexpected project.

“We took the time to do some troubleshooting and determined it needed a new battery and some mechanical fixes,” she said. “We got to work with completely new materials, unlike those we use on our robot.It was an excellent opportunity for our team members to not only help the community that has supported us so much but also learn new skills.”

The team took about $300 from its budget for batteries and other materials, then restored the wheelchair to good working condition. Next, the chair needed a home.

The Scouts reminisced about attending camping trips, making doughnuts and meeting Goldenberg at the Evergreen King Soopers. In fact, Junior Assistant Scoutmaster Tyler Guyton had a patch made that said, “Until we meet again at King Soopers.”

Eagle Scout Landon Hartman thanked Goldenberg for investing so much into the troop and into the com-

munity, noting it was important for adults to mentor youth, while Guyton told Goldenberg that his legacy would remain strong within the troop.

Goldenberg told the 75 people gathered at Church of the Cross that he was humbled and overwhelmed by the response as he leaves the troop.

One of those organizations is the Rotary Club of Evergreen, of which Mindy Hanson is president-elect.

“Our Rotary Club had sponsored a refugee family who had come to the U.S. from the Middle East,” Mindy Hanson said. “They have a disabled teenage son who had never had a wheelchair. In fact, when this young man and his family escaped from their country to a refugee camp, his older brother carried him for several days until they reached a safe place.”

Because his mobility was so limited, the younger brother had never attended school.

Last summer, the Hansons delivered the wheelchair to the teenager, who lives with his family on Denver’s west side. He is now attending school fulltime.

“He has more mobility but also more dignity because he can move from place to place without having to be carried,” Mindy Hanson said. “He has also received some medical treatments he was in dire need of.

“This family came with nothing,” she continued. “It’s been a challenge for them to get settled. Now, both boys are in school and absolutely love it.

And the younger brother has a greater

likelihood of making a life for himself.”

Team Blitz wants to do more such projects. Not only did they learn new skills, they saw how their work can make a difference for others.

“One of the neat things is, the money went full circle,” Mindy Hanson said.

“We found it on the side of the road in our community. They fixed it up, using team money to buy parts, and it was donated to a family adopted

by Evergreen Rotary, which is one of their sponsors.”

Stauffer said she would welcome a similar opportunity.

“It ended up being a really rewarding experience, especially since we gave it to somebody who used it to improve their life,” she said.

The wheelchair project and other Team Blitz projects have given Stauffer not only skills, but insight.

“This team has supported me and given me skills in so many different ways,” she said. “A lot of school activities are meant for individuals. Sports, for instance, helps you. But these projects allow you to have an effect on community and gain new perspective.

Working as a team helps you build skills for yourself, but also see how you can use them to help other people.”

Looking forward

Stawski said as he takes over the helm of EMD, he will place a greater emphasis on water conservation and how that benefits the Bear Creek Watershed. He hopes EMD can be more visible in spreading the message of saving water.

“There’s a level of complexity in

Lighthart noted that some households within the district use 10 times what a typical household uses, and while those households can afford the additional fees, that kind of water usage depletes the water source more quickly.

EMD continues to look at neighboring partners to improve its systems. Currently, it is working on an agreement with the Lookout Mountain Water District that

She called Lighthart’s retirement “bittersweet” since he’s been such an institution for the district.

However, she believes the change will bring the district new opportunities.

Lighthart added: “Challenges that are coming to Evergreen and EMD will require fresh ways of looking at things.”

VOICES Mind-blowing: Bubble-wrapped brains

Whether devouring a mate, squirting acid from the abdomen or shooting blood from the eye, each species fits perfectly in its own niche, even though that niche is not always understood by humans.

For example, the expectation that two 300-pound animals, each carrying 30 pounds of horn on his head, should run into each at 40 mph is staggering.

Bighorn sheep have intrigued scientists who wish to learn how the animals’ head-bashing behaviors do not result in concussions.

In an interview with the New York Times, Dr. Gregory D. Myer, director of research in sports medicine at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, shared a headscratching description of the mechanism by which bighorn sheep rams avoid concussions. He stated that “bighorns’ brains are naturally protected with mechanisms that

slow the return of blood from the head to the body, increasing blood volume that fills their brains’ vascular tree, creating the Bubble Wrap effect.”

Myer continued his mind-boggling explanation: “The Christie Greene sheep has hollow pneumatic horn cores attached to its respiratory system that allow it to re-breathe its air and thus increase carbon dioxide in its bloodstream, expanding its intracranial vascular tree and enhancing the Bubble Wrap effect.”

No quiz will be given at the conclusion of this article.

Yet, there has been recent research suggesting that the sheeps’ head-ramming might be more impactful to their brain health than

earlier believed. In 2022, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai published a study in Acta Neuropathologica revealing that signs of concussions and head trauma were present in the brains of deceased bighorn sheep and muskoxen.

If brain damage isn’t enough of a challenge, Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (RMBHS, for those in the know) face serious threats from infringement of the more aggressive mountain goat and the tragic effects of a strain of pneumonia contracted from domestic goats and sheep which is fatal to RMBHS lambs. Colorado Parks and Wildlife states that the separation of domestic sheep and goats from RMBHS is critical to the survival of the state’s wild sheep. In Idaho, a sheep rancher’s grazing permit was retired in order to prevent infection of a neighboring RMBHS herd after the wild herd suffered 100% lamb mortality for several consecutive years. Domestic sheep are carriers

of the disease but remain asymptomatic.

Fortunately, the largest bighorn sheep herd in Colorado is receiving support from federal and state government agencies. The Colorado Department of Transportation will be constructing a wildlife overpass near the town of Empire, protecting the sheep and other wildlife from collisions with vehicles. The project is to be completed by 2025.

Additionally, Rocky Mountain National Park protects its bighorn sheep population from the threat of encroachment by mountain goats by killing goats that enter the park.

Humans can support bighorn sheep populations by keeping domestic sheep and goats contained, driving carefully in bighorn sheep habitats, refraining from feeding sheep and by giving them space.

As the majestic Colorado State animal since 1961, the Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep deserves protection and respect.

Your news report about the revised chain of command at the Evergreen Fire / Rescue department is a good example of an alarming pattern of high-handed authoritarianism.

I hope your readers, especially the citizens of Evergreen see past these policies designed to conceal information from the public and limit dissent. The importance of interpersonal relationships certainly improves teamwork and yes, there needs to be a reasonable chain of command with

professional standards, but municipalities, special districts, local government agencies and especially the press need to remember why our founding Fathers created the First Amendment.

Employment rights in the federal government set a much better example with open-door communication policies that protect speech and dissent. and ultimately improve government service. Taxpayers have the right to expect a fair balance between personal privacy and government secrecy.

Recycle your holiday tree: Evergreen Sustainability Alliance sponsors annual recycling drop-off Items can be dropped off at two locations

The Evergreen Sustainability Alliance hosts its annual holiday tree recycling event Jan. 5, 6 and 13. Trees will be ground into mulch that will be available for residents to use in the summer.

Trees only (no lights or styrofoam) can be left at 1246 Bergen Parkway from 1 to 4 p.m. Jan. 5. That site is a vacant parking lot across from King Soopers.

Undecorated trees, lights and block styrofoam (no peanuts) can be

dropped off at both the Bergen Parkway site and the Evergreen Lutheran Church, 5980 Highway 73 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 6 and 13.

LAM Tree Service will grind the trees, making the mulch available for free residential use this summer.

The mulch will be available at LAM Tree’s Evergreen site, 30476 Bryant Drive.

“It’s a really good way to keep all those things out of the landfill,” said Wendy Neuman, director of the Evergreen Sustainability Alliance. “And it’s all kept local.”

The alliance will also accept donations during drop-off hours.

“Scouting is a calling, but it takes motivation to step up,” he said, thanking his sons Max and Zach for bringing him into the Scouting fold.

“They were my motivation.”

He noted that 25% of Troop 888 becomes Eagle Scouts while nationally it’s 4%. He thanked the troop’s Eagle Scouts and also those who tried but didn’t reach Eagle Scout status.

“The nobility is in the journey, not the destination,” he said. “Scouts who haven’t reached Eagle are still inspirations.”

He defined success as the hundreds of Scouts who went through the program, speaking specifically

of bravery that is listed in the Boy Scout Law. He said his intent was to teach Scouts to be brave enough to stand up for what was right.

He also defined thrifty, also in the Boy Scout Law, saying that while some might think it means frugal, he equated thrifty to using time wisely, advising not to take events for granted.

“Treat everything like it might be the last time,” he said. “Time is yours to do with as you choose. What you spend your time on shows people what you value.”

He also talked about his gratitude for his interactions with young people and for the camaraderie among the Scouts, their families and the troop leaders.

“We get to see young followers become great leaders,” he said. “Scouts are part of my extended family.”

PUTTING THEIR SOULS INTO SOLES Shoeshining and repairs bring purpose to local craftsmen

n 1838, photographer Louis Daguerre captured what is often cited as the first-ever photograph of a person.

The black-and-white image shows buildings and trees lining a cobblestone street in Paris. Although it was a busy street, the length of the photographic exposure rendered the passersby and horse traffic invisible in the final image.

But on that spring day more than 185 years ago, two individuals remained still enough to show up in the photo. In the bottom left-hand corner, on the sidewalk near the street, one person polishes another’s shoes.

The photograph unexpectedly became a time capsule of the age-old tradition of shoeshining, which although less common than it once was, continues to be an indispensable part of some people’s personal and professional routines.

From Denver to Centennial, several shoeshine and shoe repair craftsmen aim to make their customers’ lives sparkle by pro-

viding service, beauty and powerful interpersonal connections.

The skill of shoe repair

For Edward Koinov, the owner of Re-Nu Shoe Repair in Centennial, business is buzzing.

Over the course of an hour one Friday in December, customers entered Koinov’s shop in a continuous stream — asking him for advice, getting quotes or picking up their shoes.

In addition to shining, Koinov changes soles, replaces heels, adds stitching, makes color corrections and sometimes even adds embellishments.

And because he knows what he’s doing with leather, people often bring in other items, like purses and bags.

“I’ll never say no,” he said, unless a customer requests an impossible repair. “Most of them, I fix.”

Koinov’s space reflects the popularity of his service, which seems to have bounced back after a lull during the COVID-19 pandemic. Hundreds of shoes sit on shelves, awaiting repairs and pickups.

And despite rising costs of supplies, Koinov is making things work. He said he works on about 25 pairs of shoes per day, and business is especially busy in the winter.

“People love shoes,” he said.

Koinov, who grew up in Russia, learned to make shoes from scratch in a factory when he was 17 years old.

In 1989, he moved to New York City and later relocated to Colorado for the weather and the mountains, he said.

Previous to his shoe shop, Koinov opened a car dealership and a Russian restaurant in the metro Denver area. He said he lost money from both of these endeavors and decided to go back to his roots in the shoe business.

When asked why shoes are interesting to him, Koinov joked, “What am I going to be, a lawyer?”

He said that people are good at different things — and for him, it’s always been shoes.

“This is not one year, two years to learn this job,” he said. “This job is years (and) years. You need to know how to fix the shoes. You need to know this job.”

The ‘secret recipe’

North of Centennial, another tenured shoe professional, Vincent Wayne Robinson, owns his own shoeshining company in Denver.

Like Koinov, Robinson fell into the shoe business as a teenager.

He was working with a carpenter on converting a grocery store into a nightclub in Oklahoma City in the 1970s.

At 17 years old, Robinson wanted to attend the nightclub once it opened — but he knew he was too young to get in. So when chatting with the club owner one day during construction, he had what he calls a “vision.”

Out of the blue, he asked the owner if he had ever considered having a shoeshine stand in the club.

“The thought came from me, out of nowhere,” he said. “I felt like something spoke through me, because it was nothing I was conscious of. I know that’s crazy, but that’s the way it was.”

Robinson had no experience in shining shoes, but he told the club owner that he could provide the service. He asked his cousin, a reliably confident person, to join him in the endeavor.

“I started figuring it out — it became a nice little hustle,” Robinson said. “But it didn’t come to a business until I moved to Colorado.”

In the early 2000s, Robinson started working at the shoeshine stand at Denver International Airport.

There, he said, he learned how to shine professionally.

“I learned so much from the owner,” he said. “And that’s where the love began.”

After that, Robinson decided to open up his own company, Vincent’s Shoe Shine of Cherry Creek, which now operates out of a space on Ogden Street in Denver, among other locations.

The process of shining a shoe, Robinson said, is a “secret recipe” of cleaning, conditioning, waterproofing and “spit-shining.” In the past, people would use saliva for the shining part of the process — but these days, Robinson said “spitshining” involves using a water mist and a specific motion with a rag.

He said shoeshining is an art, and that it’s an important process to add longevity to leather shoes.

“Some people, they may have a pair of shoes that they can’t really

find again,” he said. “We come in a situation where it’s their grandfather’s shoe, it’s their mom’s shoe … it’s just an item that they really love and cherish.”

Robinson said the way a person looks at the shoeshining business is important, and people who look at it wrong may struggle to stay afloat in it.

“I choose to look at it from the same point of view that I learned from somebody who understood the fiber of just having a shoeshine in their business,” he said. “They know it’s for a certain customer — it won’t be for everybody — but that certain customer is definitely going to be a person who has a lot of pride in what they do.”

Connecting across a shoeshine stand

Even more than an art form, shoeshining is a valuable social experience for some in the business.

Starting as close family friends, Robinson trained Dominick Martinez in shoeshining. They started working together after Martinez finished high school, and it’s been an important part of Martinez’s life since then.

“I’m a person that’s capable …

of doing anything,” Martinez said.

“But I kinda never left this situation … It’s always come back around full circle to this.”

For him, the purpose of shoeshining has little to do with shoes. Instead, it’s about the people.

“Sometimes, some people like that one-on-one kind of interaction,” he said. “It’s refreshing. It’s not about what you pay for, it’s about what you get in the process.”

He compared the shoeshining experience to going to a barbershop or a beauty salon — where people come partially for the service itself, but largely for the connection with the person providing it.

He said this human connection is something that artificial intelligence can’t take away.

“There’s a reason why you need that interaction,” he said. “It don’t matter what’s going on behind that interaction — but our problem is we don’t let that interaction happen anymore, and this lets the interaction happen. You can’t put a price on that.”

Robinson, who also said the customers are his favorite part of the job, said he hopes his company can help share the tradition of shoeshining.

At his shop in Denver, he teaches courses to train the next generation of shiners.

“I started out with my kids, we started out with (Martinez’s) kids,” he said. “Now, we’re gonna manufacture it into a classroom situation.”

Martinez added that shoeshining is a trade that can help young individuals get on their feet and support themselves.

“We always need those trades and those personal interactions,” he said.

Robinson said shoeshining is a great way to teach kids about creating things and making money at a young age.

“At the end of the day, we want to see fathers and sons sitting in their garage, doing these things together, and just keep putting (relationships) between people,” he said.

“Everybody has to walk around with shoes.”

When reflecting on the tradition, Martinez referenced the early French photograph of shoeshining.

“This came a long time before us and it’s gonna be here a whole lot longer,” he said. “And there’s a reason for that … The interactions are something different.”

This position will assist with other department duties, such as accounts payable, cash receipting, utility billing, and coordination of meetings, trainings, interviews, etc. The City provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision insurance coverage; 100% of the employee’s premiums are paid by the City and approximately 98% of dependent premiums are paid by the City. Paid vacation and sick leave, 401(a) and 457b employer retirement contributions; fifteen (15) paid holidays annually. City paid Long-Term Disability and Life Insurance.

Clear Creek County is seeking bids from qualified professional vendors for the demolition of four existing inmate shower stalls, recommendations and pricing for four new ADA-compliant shower stalls and development of cost estimates for design and construction. The qualified vendor must show possession of skills necessary to maintain and improve effectiveness, enhance its quality of services, minimize down time and support costs, and ensure security and safety controls at all times.

The purpose of this Request-for-Bid is to obtain relevant information, credentials, qualifications, experience and a proposed Project Approach from interested Firms to inform the Board for selection of a consultant to inspect, design, engineer, cost estimate, and provide construction oversight for the installation of four new ADAcompliant inmate shower stalls.

SCOPE OF SERVICES

Four Inmate ADA-Compliant Shower Stalls • Experience and knowledge of confinement center security and construction requirements for restroom facilities.

• Presentation to Sheriff’s Office leadership of proposed shower design and installation plan.

• Structural engineering, as needed, to ensure an effective and safe facility for staff and inmates.

• Project management: Provide complete project management support inclusive of OAC meetings, coordination, project administration, scheduling, budgeting, design review and closeout.

• Comply with all insurance requirements in accordance with Clear Creek County standards.

• Include an Owner’s reserve and contingency amount to be controlled by Clear Creek County; each shall be 10% of the total GMP. • Secure all permitting for the completion of the project.

• Provide final as-built survey, specs, and if necessary, CAD files for Clear Creek County’s records.

• Needed demolition and waste disposal of existing structure.

• All structural and non-structural framing materials.

• Final installation.

• Cost estimates.

• Construction and construction administration.

Legal Notice No. CC770 First Publication: December 28, 2023 Last Publication: January 4, 2024 Publisher: Canyon Courier Public Notice Request for Bid Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office Wall Painting & Epoxy Flooring Project Georgetown, Clear Creek County, Colorado PURPOSE Clear Creek County is seeking bids from qualified professional vendors for the application of paint material on walls and epoxy flooring within the Clear Creek County Jail totaling approximately 5000 square feet. The qualified vendor must show possession of skills necessary to maintain and improve effectiveness, enhance its quality of services, minimize down time and support costs, and ensure security and safety controls at all times.

The purpose of this Request-for-Bid is to obtain relevant information, credentials, qualifications, experience and a proposed Project Approach from interested Firms to inform the Board for selection of a consultant to inspect, design epoxy solution, apply epoxy and paint surfacing, and warranty work and materials.

SCOPE OF SERVICES Sheriff’s Office Wall Painting & Epoxy Flooring Project • Normal working hours should be performed between 8am and 5pm Monday through Friday.

• Contractor shall provide paint and epoxy material options to Sheriff’s leadership for approval.

• Contractor shall comply with product manufacturer recommendation as included with the product.

• Obtain primary resinous flooring materials including primers, resins, hardening agents, grouting coats and topcoats through one source from a single manufacturer, with not less than ten years of successful experience in manufacturing and installing principal materials as described here.

• Comply with epoxy flooring manufacturer’s written instructions for substrate temperature, ambient temperature, moisture, ventilation and other conditions affecting epoxy applications.

• Perform testing of product as recommended by the manufacturer.

• Coordinate application of components to provide optimum adhesion of resinous product to substrate, and optimum intercoat adhesion.

Cure epoxy product according to manufacturer’s written instructions.

• Treat floor drains to bridge potential cracks and to maintain protection.

• Remove temporary covering and clean resinous flooring just prior to final inspection.

Use cleaning materials as recommended by the product manufacturer.

• A collaborative design process with Sheriff’s Office leadership to design an epoxy and paint solution which fulfills the needs of the Sheriff’s Office staff as well as the security restrictions for inmates.

• Epoxy coating shall be applied to provide sufficient coating and thickness and shall be coped/angled to allow to be applied at the base of the walls and to extend approximately 4” to the

current height of existing floor.

• Contractor shall apply a heavier non-slip epoxy resin at all floor areas. These areas shall be able to be mopped and cleaned.

• Contractor shall, at all times, take any and all steps necessary for maintenance and preservation of all adjacent County property.

• Contractor shall identify which employees will be working on this project including subcontractors. Those employees shall bring photo ID to obtain a County ID badge that shall be worn alt all times while on the property. Contractor staff shall return all ID badges to designed personnel at the end of each work day.

• Contractor shall provide daily cleanup of work area and trash removal from the site.

• Provide needed ventilation equipment during application and curing processes.

• Project management: Provide complete project management support inclusive of weekly meetings, coordination, project administration, scheduling, budgeting, design review and closeout.

• Comply with all insurance requirements in accordance with Clear Creek County standards.

• Include an Owner’s reserve and contingency amount to be controlled by Clear Creek County; each shall be 10% of the total GMP. • Any needed demolition and waste disposal.

O-Line Replacement Owner will receive Statements of Qualifications demonstrating the Proposer’s qualifications and ability to provide CM/GC services and construct the Project by email sent to Kelli Kavinsky at KKavinsky@tstinfrastructure.com until Thursday, January 4, 2024 at 1:00 PM local time. The CM/GC Contract will include the following services and Work: Construction of approximately 800 linear feet of 30-inch gravity sewer, 50 linear feet of 12-inch gravity sewer, and six 72-inch manholes for Roxborough Water and Sanitation District’s O-Line Interceptor; preconstruction services including design workshops and meetings, development of construction cost estimates, scheduling/phasing plans, document/ constructability reviews, site visits and procurement services seeking qualified construction subcontractors for specified Work packages.
