Cookie wonderland Conifer’s Our Lady of the Pines hosts its annual Cookie Walk BY DEB HURLEY BROBST DBROBST@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
Marilyn Baer was on a mission. The Conifer resident arrived at the Cookie Walk at Our Lady of the Pines Catholic Church on Dec. 9 about 10 minutes early and started cookie shopping as volunteers finished setting up the cookie extravaganza. She said her husband plowed the driveway so she could navigate through the freshly fallen 10 inches of snow to get to the church. Baer has been attending the popular annual event for about 10 years. She walked around the tables, admiring the cookies on a plethora of trays, saying, “Those look tempting,” and “Those look sinful.” She asked for seven of each of her selections because she has seven

members in her extended family. The annual Cookie Walk brought out hundreds of people to fill bags, tins and platters with cookies of every kind imaginable — everything from beautifully decorated sugar cookies to chocolate chip, peanut butter, butter cookies, gingerbread men and more. There are about 200 varieties baked by church parishioners, and each baker is asked to bake 10 dozen of each, equating to about 24,000 homemade cookies in one room at one time. There were also breads, popcorn, gingerbread houses and other goodies. The Cookie Walk started in 2004 to raise money for the church, and some volunteers have been baking or working at the event since its inception. The concept is simple: Customers walk around the tables — hence the name Cookie Walk — and decide which cookies they want. Volunteers wearing holiday aprons and gloves stand behind the tables and place cookies in bags and containers.
Each platter of cookies has a list of ingredients. There’s Christmas music playing in the background. Attendees select as many as they want of each cookie, and the cookie selections are weighed. The price is $12 per pound. Bambi Moss of Conifer attends yearly to stock up on cookies to serve when family and friends come to her house to cut down Christmas trees. She explained that her parents started the tree-cutting tradition 50 years ago, and she has continued it. While she likes to bake cookies, December is too busy for her to have them ready for the visits, so the Cookie Walk fills the bill. Beth Schubert and her husband Matt and children Ella and Connor donned their aprons and gloves to serve cookies to the cookie shoppers. Beth explained that the family started getting involved in the Cookie Walk three years ago by baking cookies, then decided to volunteer. “It’s always a good time,” Beth Schubert said. “And our kids get to pick out cookies to take home.”

D.R. Horton Inks Deal to Build Homes With OSB Made From Grass, not Lumber
My June 1 column featured a startup called Plantd in North Carolina which invented an alternative to standard OSB boards made from lumber with ones made from fast-growing grass. Their product was developed in cooperation with D.R. Horton, a major U.S. builder of new homes, who helped get the product approved and certified as a building material. Within a month after my article, Horton ordered 250,000 of the panels to use in building 1,000 production homes, and it was announced that Plantd’s first automated machine for producing the panels would be in production by year’s end and that the 1,000 homes would begin construction in 2024.
You can read that June 1 column online at www.JimSmithColumns.com. OSB is the sheathing that is used on the exterior walls of all “stickbuilt” homes, as well as on subfloors and as roof sheathing. Although I don’t know this as a fact, I suspect that the sheer weight and volume of OSB panels equals or exceeds that of the 2x4s, 2x6s and the joists and trusses to which it is attached. Using Plantd’s panels as a replacement for wood-based OSB has huge ramifications on the preservation of forests, the absorption of carbon dioxide and the fight against climate change. As you can read on their website, www.PlantdMaterials.com, “Through-

Estate proposing a new “Disclosure of Information, Duties, And Authorization Regarding Title Insurance & Closing Settlement Services” for the benefit of sellers and buyers. As of now, the Colorado Real Estate Commission has not acted on that request. [A copy of the proposed disclosure is posted on Substack.com.] While waiting for the Division to review and approve this needed disclosure, there is a solution to this dilemma. When listing your home for sale, request your Broker to shop your title insurance and closing services by using CompareTitleCompanies. com, which provides a free one-stop shopping solution and takes less than five minutes. Also, ask your broker to request a Closing Protection Letter when they order your title insurance services. CompareTitleCompanies.com is a unique marketing tool for title companies and a free resource for consumers and brokers. Have a website questions? Email Garry at Contact@CompareTitleCompanies.com. For questions about the duties and information provided by your broker, you may contact the Division of Real Estate at dora_realestate_web-site@state.co.us.
Guest Column: Learn About Title Companies It’s easy to get information overload when selling your house, but what if you don’t get all the information you need from your real estate broker? Besides getting top dollar for your home, what about saving money and better protecting your real estate closing by shopping your title insurance & closing services? The Denver Metro Association of Realtors reports the median price of a single-family home sold in November was $625K. The costs for title insurance and closing services for a $625K home ranges from $1,247 up to $2,563, a difference of $1,316. Title companies are regulated by the Colorado Division of Insurance, which encourages consumers to shop their title insurance and closing services. Sellers shouldn’t assume that their listing agent has shopped and compared their recommended title company, as the Division of Real Estate that licenses and regulates real estate brokers doesn’t require brokers to do so. Typically, most brokers just recommend their favorite title company, regardless of the costs to you. While title insurance may be somewhat unfamiliar to sellers, it’s important to note the title policies and coverages are identical among all Colorado title companies, and that the title policy benefits the buyer and not the seller. More than likely, your listing agent did not mention this to you. Also, did your broker recommend getting a seller’s “Closing Protection Letter” (CPL) which provides additional protections for your money and the closing process? Again, the Division of Real Estate doesn’t require brokers to inform you of such information. Based on such information not being provided by brokers, a request was submitted by me, Garry Wolff of CompareTitleCompanies.com, to the Division of Real
Jim Smith on Title Insurance:
Like any seasoned listing agent, I have my preferred title companies based on years of experience working with them. I have found the escrow officers of some firms more attentive and better at handling issues that may arise, so I definitely recommend one for my seller to use. I admit that I should remind them it’s their decision and point them to Garry’s website, but a choice based on it would be based solely on price. Then we could talk. Where I think agents go wrong is when they have an in-house title company and they get spiffed for “capturing” a seller for that title company and probably don’t suggest their client shop other companies.
out history, civilizations have advanced at the speed of material innovation. Timber, steel, and concrete enabled remarkable progress, but today they are the problem, not the solution. Continuing to build with these materials accelerates climate change and promises to impede progress by threatening our future on this planet.” It is the mitigation of climate change that motivated the company’s founders to develop their unique product. At the top of their lengthy home page is this goal: “Carbon negative materials for every new home and building on earth.” Scroll down, and you find this statement: “We envision a world that stands in balance with nature—a world built from grass… A world where buildings no longer cause climate change but are central to the solution. Where they are stronger, more durable, and more affordable. And where their walls and structures lock away vast amounts of carbon dioxide pulled from the atmosphere.” You have probably heard of “carbon sequestration,” the removing of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it somewhere — typically underground. The oceans also sequester carbon, which has become a problem, endangering ocean life and disrupting the pH balance of ocean water. Plants are among the biggest sequesters of carbon dioxide because it’s their primary food. You’ve heard the Amazon rainforest described as “the earth’s lungs,” although it functions in the opposite manner, absorbing carbon monoxide and emitting oxygen. Trees sequester carbon until they are burned, and building materials made from lumber sustain that sequestration. But trees take a long time to grow, mak-
ing their absorption of carbon dioxide less efficient than the propriety grass developed by Plantd, which can reach 20 feet in height in a single growing season as shown in the photo at left. The company claims that 14,000 acres of grass plantations can produce as much material as 400,000 acres of managed timber lands. (Also, the grass is perennial, unlike trees, so it doesn’t need to be replanted after harvesting.) Another feature of the North Carolina company is that it operates out of a onetime tobacco factory and has hired tobacco farmers who had been put out of work when the tobacco factory closed to grow the grass for their factory. The company’s website claims that their product is stronger, lighter, more moisture resistant, carbon negative, and will cost the same as regular OSB. Plantd’s panels have just two ingredients: the perennial grass plus a small amount of resin (with the formaldehyde removed before it reaches Plantd’s factory). This creates a low-VOC product with fewer chemical additives compared to other products, according to Plantd. There’s a 3-minute video on the home page which shows the panels being installed on a D.R. Horton home under construction. I have the link to that video on the posting of this article at http://RealEstateToday.substack.com. I have written about many technological developments in home construction over the years, but this product has me more excited than all of them put together. I can’t wait to see the first homes in our metro area being built with this product.

Elk Creek Fire board censures Chuck Newby The board says he violated the bylaws by campaigning against fire department consolidation BY DEB HURLEY BROBST DBROBST@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
The board of directors of the Elk Creek Fire Protection District has censured one of its members for his conduct related to the failed attempt by the district to consolidate with two neighboring districts. Board member Chuck Newby, who campaigned against Elk Creek consolidating with Inter-Canyon and North Fork fire departments because he said it was bad for Elk Creek, was censured at the Dec. 14 board meeting. The other four board members, Greg Pixley, Melissa Baker, Sharon Woods and Dominique Devaney, voted in favor of the censure, and they also voted earlier this year to move forward with asking voters in November whether the three departments should consolidate. In the Elk Creek fire department, the consolidation issue was hotly contested and was defeated by a narrow margin, while consolidation was approved in the other two fire districts. Elk Creek Fire board meetings have grown increasingly contentious in the last several months as the board

discussed consolidation and eventually voted 4-1 to take the question to voters. Public comment sessions at the meetings have included passionate pleas both for and against consolidation. On Dec. 14, in a heated exchange among the board, Newby said he
was ambushed since he didn’t know about the censure resolution until it was brought up at the meeting. “Everything you accuse me of here is wrong,” Newby said. “It’s absolutely false, and it is despicable on your part. … Each and every one of you that votes yes to censure me, look at
yourself in the mirror. Look at what you are doing.” Pixley, who is the board president, said before introducing the censure resolution: “I have asked this board to behave in a manner that fits the SEE CENSURE, P6

bylaws and benefits the community. … I am obligated … that we move forward with a public censure.” After Newby asked what he was being charged with, Pixley read the resolution, which states that Newby violated three sections of the bylaws: • “Once the board has voted on an issue, the directors shall not take any actions which would create barriers or otherwise impede the district’s ability to implement the board’s decision;” • Board members should work collaboratively to conduct district business, and one board member doesn’t have the authority to speak on behalf of the board and can’t
bind the district through individual actions or statements; and • ”A director is prohibited from taking personal advantage of a situation to benefit himself or herself or prejudice the district.” The resolution states that Newby’s campaigning against consolidation was “contrary to the previous majority votes of the board, put the district at risk of allegations of campaign finance violation and were against the best interests of the district.” The resolution directs Newby to perform the duties as a board member, to honor the oath and bond of directors pursuant to the bylaws, and to stop “engaging in unauthorized conduct as a board member and comply with applicable laws, board policy, regulation and bylaws.” Newby countered that his behav-

at the meeting was the anti-consolidation group using the Elk Creek Fire Protection District’s logo on signs and campaign materials. While Newby called it “fair use,” the fire department sent a letter to the anti-consolidation group, asking it to stop using the logo. Others spoke during public comment, chastising Newby for working against the consolidation effort, and Melissa Winefeldt, a resident and wife of an Elk Creek firefighter, asked the board to find ways to enforce their bylaws. Neil Whitehead III, who is a member of the anti-consolidation group, said during public comment that Newby was being treated unfairly. He said Newby was true to his oath as a board member by putting the survival of the fire department first by working to stop consolidation, and he received a lot of grief for that.

He noted that bylaws were not law; rather, they were a recommendation. “It is not binding on me, and it’s not binding on you,” he said. Board member Dominique Devaney countered, “Bylaws are the binding rules for the board.” He added that even if it was binding on him, he took action to impede consolidation because he told the board from the beginning that it was not going about the consolidation effort in an open and transparent manner. A board member called for a vote on the resolution, and as Pixley asked who was in favor of the resolution, Newby said, “You’re not going to let me to let me defend myself. … You people are despicable.” An issue that several spoke about

Residents allege ‘hostile encounters,’ hazards ignored in lawsuit against Elk Creek Fire Protection District officials BY DEB HURLEY BROBST DBROBST@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
Two Conifer residents are alleging in a lawsuit that officials with the Elk Creek Fire Protection District abused the public trust and failed to address concerns about fire hazards. The plaintiffs, Conifer residents Donna Boreck and Dean Stansbury, “and several property owners” name Fire Chief Jacob Ware and Lt. Paul Scott in their suit along with district board members Greg Pixley, Melissa Baker, Sharon Woods and Dominique Devaney. Board member Chuck Newby was not named in the lawsuit, which was filed in Jefferson County District Court earlier this month. Representatives from the Elk Creek Fire Department said they are investigating the allegations in the lawsuit and would respond in the required 21 days. They declined to comment further, citing the ongoing nature of legal action. Some of the issues in the lawsuit are linked to a failed attempt by Elk Creek, North Fork and Inter-Canyon fire departments to consolidate in November. Voters in North Fork and Inter-Canyon approved consolidation, while Elk Creek voters turned it down. The lawsuit lists five issues in the form of 11 exhibits: • Employees’ failure to perform responsibilities and denial of services: “Defendants failed to address citizens’ concerns and allowed known fire hazards to go unreported and uncorrected,” the lawsuit said. The exhibits say employees did not address “a clear and present danger complaint on December 2022” involving a natural gas pipe. • Employees’ endangerment of the general public, harassment and other unprofessional conduct issues: An exhibit states, “Oct. 16 to present, there have been at least six hostile encounters with several [fire protection district] unionized firefighters against property owners including stalking, intimidation, threats of violence, voter suppression and tampering.” • Surveillance, stalking and tracking of the property owners without cause: In an exhibit, it states: “During the past eight months, several proponents for consolidation have created an unsafe and hostile environment for several

property owners in and around the Conifer area community, with acts of vote tampering, voter intimidation, reprisals against individuals for voicing opposing views, surveillance and stalking of property owners, signage abuse, misrepresentation of material facts, etc.” • Abuse of public trust by misuse of taxpayer funds, election law violations, malfeasance: Exhibits state that the district has refused “to adequately disclose/report monthly/yearly operating and capital expenses/budget when repeatedly requested to do so by its citizens/taxpayers; refusal to disclose information regarding the proposed consolidation/mill levy increase of the Elk Creek, Inter-Canyon and North Fork” fire departments even after a Colorado Open Records Act request and a board member motion to do so; “Expenditure of an estimated $125,000+ of fire district funds for a marketing campaign designed to convince voters to vote for the proposed consolidation/mill levy increase ballot measures.” • Production of false report, misrepresentations of material fact and other criminal misconduct issues: An exhibit says, “Reviewing the recent publication/newsletter/brochure titled Summer 2023 page 2 Benefits & Impact on property owners for consolidation, the statement is made ‘the average homeowner of a $650,000 home would see an increase of $7 to $14 a month.’ … Unfortunately, this statement is clearly a misrepresentation of material fact (false representation of material fact) which has been repeated many times in the past by unaware board members.”

Holiday shopping for all ages Pine’s Elk Creek Elementary hosts Holiday Craft Fair BY DEB HURLEY BROBST DBROBST@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
Students at Elk Creek Elementary School did a lot of Christmas shopping at the North Pole Express Holiday Craft Fair. The craft fair in its 24th year brings in area artisans to sell their crafts to children and adults alike. On Dec. 9, children bring their money to buy gifts for family and friends. On Dec.
10, families attended the craft fair and Santa was available for photos. The artisans, some of whom have participated in the craft fair all 24 years, have items for sale starting at $1, so there’s something for shoppers of all ages. From the knitted items and ornaments to misfit dolls and squirrel picnic tables, the variety was immense. The young shoppers were frugal as they moved from table to table in the gymnasium, deciding what their parents, siblings and grandparents would like. with artisans that most years, the gymnasium is filled with returning crafters. Second grader Silas Sawyer said he was looking for stuff for his family, especially fragile stuff. He decided to spend $1 on a piece of turquenite from Joanna Moreno. Second grader Aliyah Raphaelson-Huckaby had a lot of family members to buy for, and she was checking out all of the tables before deciding what would be the perfect gift. Nolan Schwemlein, a junior at Conifer High School, has had a table at the craft fair since he was a fourth grader at Elk Creek. This year, he decided to create misfit toys, taking different dolls and swapping parts. He also offered duct tape wallets, knitted hats and wooden snowmen.
Artisan Anne Spiessbach has had a table at the craft fair for four years. Spiessbach attended Elk Creek as a child, and she likes getting to meet the children and help them shop for family. Artisan Carol Jacobsen, who has been at all 24 craft fairs, showed second graders the items she had available. She said she participates every year as a tribute to the women who started the craft fair. Their vision was to have quality gift items available for children to buy. Artisan Jeni Swan offered a variety of items at her table including ornaments. Swan also has participated in the fair nearly every year since the craft fair’s inception, saying she gets involved each year for the kids. “We want this to be affordable,” she said. “(The students) can’t go into a store and pay a lot for gifts. I try to have things little girls and boys would like. I try to cover all the bases.”

Take a deep sniff, inhale the fragrant mist that allows the aroma to fill your senses. Feel the comfort of the warmth of the cup in your hands. If possible, go to your cozy space with your tea. As you sit and take in all the sensations, allow your mind and body to relax and appreciate these moments of serenity and harmony. Calmness is kindness: As you nestle into your snug haven with your chosen tea, take a heartfelt pause to honor and celebrate all that you have achieved during this vibrant busy season. Sip your tea slowly, letting each sip be a graceful dance of tranquility. Allow the warmth you feel to wrap around you like a tender embrace, releasing any tension or worries. Close your eyes and embrace this act of self-kindness as you enjoy some
much-needed downtime. Allow yourself to reflect on your efforts, being grateful for your strength, energy, and determination. In these gentle moments, kindness towards oneself becomes a profound reminder of the significance of self-compassion and nurturing among the madness of the season. In the symphony of celebrations and demands, these heartfelt practices offer an oasis of serenity. A chance to stop, breathe, appreciate moments of calm and peace. Embracing the art of nurturing a cozy space, delighting in the ritual of intentional tea and fostering selfkindness can be transformative in the fast tempo of the season. Let these practices be a guiding light, leading you back to your heart-center, gifting yourself moments of peaceful escapes this holiday season. Happy Holidays! Lisa D. LETTER TO THE EDITOR In response to “Evergreen Fire/Rescue board sets rules for communication with department staff ”
I commend the Evergreen Fire/Rescue Board for adopting a sensible set of rules for communication with the Board of Directors. While I am not at all familiar with the specific reasons behind adopting them now, I fully agree that every nonprofit or governmental board needs to delineate how communications should properly occur within the institution. Most of us are members of such institutions, myself included. These include unions, homeowners associations, charitable organizations, PTAs, political parties, churches, metropolitan districts and of course numerous governments. Each institution has its own unique governance structure that requires a specific policy, so all members know whom to contact with concerns, grievances and requests. When the chain of communication (or command) is bypassed in order to gain special privilege or exert undue influence, the institution suffers abuse and distrust by members as much as its members can suffer from unfair decisions made by the board or its agents.
The next step is for a board to insist that its directors actually read and understand all the rules that control their institution. These include the applicable laws, state, federal and local, that apply to it, as well as the institution’s governance documents. Most boards have the fiduciary responsibilities of care and loyalty for the institution’s finances and real property which each director needs to be aware of and follow. As an example, homeowners associations must comply with their by-laws and covenants, Colorado Common Interest Ownership Act, the Colorado Non-Profit Association Act, the Internal Revenue Service Tax-Exempt Organization tax requirements, city or county zoning and development rules, and state and federal non-discrimination laws under the Federal Fair Housing Act. Being an institutional board member is a big job! I have great confidence that Evergreen Fire/Rescue is being well led and administered by competent leaders who exhibit integrity in their work. The new communication policy should enhance their ability to succeed and avoid any further communication issues. Gary R. Justus, Evergreen

Audrey Mae (Reis) Weihaupt
January 8, 1932 - December 11, 2023
Waunakee, WI, Evergreen, CO Audrey Mae (Reis) Weihaupt, 91, passed away on December 11, 2023. She was born January 8, 1932, in the Town of Westport, Wisconsin on the Reis Brothers family farm at the northwest corner of Highways K and Q to Agnes (Fleiner) and Henry Reis. Audrey had a wonderful life filled with good friends, significant accomplishments, and world travel. She will be dearly missed by family and friends alike. Audrey graduated from Waunakee High School in 1950 where she distinguished herself as the class valedictorian. Shortly after graduating she began her professional career working at the State Capitol for the Department of Agriculture. A new opportunity presented to work for the United States Armed Forces Institute (USAFI), Department of Defense, located on the Capital Square. Her job started with clerical responsibilities but within a few short months, she was promoted to secretary for the Director of the Department of Education. Audrey lived at home on the family farm for several years following high school and then moved to Madison, living on West Gorham Street with three other young women. She attended the University of Wisconsin, taking courses at night as she held down her full-time job. In May of 1960, a chance meeting on Glenway Golf Course in Madison would forever change her life. It was on the fairway that Audrey met John G. (Jack) Weihaupt. Theirs was a whirlwind romance and less than a year after they first met, Audrey and Jack were married on January 28, 1961. They continued to live in Madison and both continued to work at USAFI, as Jack pursued a doctorate degree in geophysics. Theirs was a marriage of love, partnership and respect. They were inseparable. Their life together included traveling around the globe as Jack attended science conferences. In the early 1960’s Audrey began working as a service representative with the Social Security Administration’s Madison office. She would continue working for the SSA for over 40 years in four different cities. As Jack continued to pursue his academic career, they moved from Madison to three other Cities. In 1973 they moved to Indianapolis, Indiana where Jack took an academic dean position while Audrey was able to continue her work with SSA. In 1976, Audrey was promoted to the position of Operations
Analyst, a position she would hold until her retirement. In 1976, Audrey also completed her bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Indiana University with honors, working on it part time for over 15 years. In 1978 Audrey and Jack moved to Las Gatos, California where Jack had been named dean of the graduate school and vice president of the University Foundation at San Jose State University. Audrey was again able to land another job with the SSA. In 1982 they moved again, this time to Golden, Colorado where Jack accepted a position as dean of the graduate school and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Colorado in Denver. Due to Audrey’s exceptional work performance, she once again landed an increasingly responsible position with SSA working out of the Downtown Denver office. Audrey and Jack built their dream home on a ridge top in Evergreen, Colorado in 1995. Audrey supervised the construction and came to be known by the construction company’s crew as the “little general.” There they would spend another 19 years together, managing their enterprise and taking care of the ponderosas. Each morning Jack would ask her, “what is the POD (plan of the day)?” She always had one. Following Jack’s death in 2014, Audrey spent the next seven years managing the “enterprise” by herself. In November of 2019, she moved back to Wisconsin. Audrey is survived by 12 nieces and nephews, 17 great-nephews and great nieces, six great-great- nieces and nephews, and seven godchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Jack, her parents Agnes and Henry Reis, her sister Shirley (Murphy) Speth and two brothers Wesley and Roger. A funeral mass was held at St. John’s the Baptist Catholic Church in Waunakee on Tuesday December 19 at 11:00 a.m. with a visitation from 10:00 a.m. to the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Audrey’s name to the Wounded Warriors Project. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at All Saints Assisted Living, All Saints Memory Care and Agrace Hospice. We know Audrey held a special place in your hearts, due to the care she received, and the beautiful smile she shared with each of you.

SUPPORT LOCAL JOURNALISM
DON’T LET YOUR HOMETOWN NEWSPAPERS GO SILENT.
This year, even more than ever before, the news is in crisis. More than 17,000 news media jobs were cut just by June, at national and local outlets including at some of the biggest names like NPR, The Texas Tribune and Gannett. In fact, newsroom layoffs are up 20% from last year. Some of these outlets laid off more than 10% of their staff in the last few months — even as we head into a critical election year. These are devastating numbers. But all is not lost. Many local and independent newsrooms continue to launch across the country. With your contributions and subscriber memberships, small newsrooms like ours continue to grow, adding new journalists and expanding reporting and investigations. We’re committed to bringing the news to Coloradans. That’s because you deserve access to local, independent journalism that keeps you connected and informed — especially during challenging times. LIFE
Brighton artist paints fantastic realism BY BELEN WARD BWARD@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
J
udith Dickinson was born to be an artist. When she was eight, numerous artists saw her talent and offered to teach her. “I’ve been fortunate to continue my art education through the years working under some top artists, most recently Craig Tennant, Anthony Ryder and Michael Shane Neal,” Dickinson said. Dickinson naturally developed the talent to oil paint portraits in accurate detail, depicting nature and contemporary life. Southwest Art Magazine, Art Collector Magazine and Art of the West Magazine have also featured Dickinson’s work. Dickinson said she didn’t go to college for art, where the lessons were on abstract art. She preferred painting realism, so she got her degree in education in Philadelphia at Cairn University but continued to paint when she could. Dickinson brings the emotions and character of a real-life figure or scene to her paintings. She primarily paints portraits of clients and people around the world. Dickinson said she had painted portraits of famous people such as Judge Judy and Arnold Schwarzenegger, as well as paintings of many Christian leaders. She also did portraits for former Colorado Governor Bill Ritter and his wife. “Portrait commissions are what pays the most,” she said. “Portraits are very hard to do because each person is so different and you’ve got to be right on.” Move to Colorado
Dickinson grew up in New Jersey on 700 acres of wooded countryside with lakes. She moved to Colorado in 1996.

“I do miss the trees, but I love Colorado for the sunshine every day,” Dickinson said. Dickinson moved to Brighton in 2007, and her art career expanded. “When we drove into Brighton, it was a small town, and many places were boarded up with Christmas decorations that were still up in March,” she said. Dickinson found an 1888 historic home for sale and decorated it with antiques from New Jersey. “The home was owned by the first sheriff of Brighton, J.P. Higgins, who later became the third mayor. We love the house,” Dickinson said. Dickinson said the city of Brighton offered them the former empty police station to turn into Main Street Gallery to help revitalize downtown. Its gallery houses Colorado artists, also called the Main Street Creatives, offering art classes and hosting receptions. It also has ten studio spaces. “We have great teachers teaching 16 to 20 artists, running studios and showing in the gallery. …It’s wonderful that the city enables us to do that, “Dickinson said. Dickinson Art Studio is in the old jail of the police building. “I come to jail every day to do my art,” she said with a laugh. “I come to my studio six days a week because I love it.” Work in Africa
Dickinson and her husband’s lives changed when they went to work in Africa to start an orphanage in Uganda and work with the pygmy tribes in Rwanda. What inspired Judith and Gary Dickinson to open an orphanage in Uganda? Gary was a professor at a New Jersey University with several African students, and one of them was like a brother to them. “We were sending money for special projects,” Judith said. Judith said Gary traveled to Uganda, and a person he helped invited him to come to a remote village to thank him. When he arrived, he found many kids running around. “This guy was trying to take these children in, they were living off the land and barely went to school. Gary said we can’t do everything, but this is one thing we can focus on, so it’s when he started the orphanage,” Judith said. Judith continued her passion for painting art and making a

living to help sponsor the kids. Judith said her painting sales went toward her work in Africa, and they continue to work there today. Gary goes three to four times a year, and she goes occasionally. “A friend told us about a pygmy tribe that lives in poverty, so we went to work with two other tribes that had never learned to read or write,” Judith said. Dickinson said the kids have been in school for eight years now, and they rebuilt their huts. They are being taught how to farm and are receiving clean water and medical care. Dickinson said they took their grandchildren, three sons and their wives to Africa in June. “They got to see how the other side of the world lives,” she said. Evergreen High School gymnastics team takes third at state BY DEB HURLEY BROBST DBROBST@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM
That’s how much the Evergreen gymnastics team lost to secondplace Stanley Lake at the 4A state championship in early November. While it was heartbreaking to take third rather than second, third place was the highest the team has placed since Tabor Cowden took over as head coach in 2016. In addition, senior Sydney Burns was the state vault champion. “It was a pretty special state run,” Cowden said. “Palmer Ridge (High School) was in a league of its own and won state, but then it was a battle for second, third, fourth and fifth place. At the end of the day, it was a successful state championship for us.”
Cowden lauded the team’s six seniors — Lola Visci, Bella Palaia, Samantha Stojanov, Charlotte Baysinger, Syddney Bailey and Burns — calling them a special class and said it was fun to go through the season with them. The Cougars were 21-2 in the regular season and placed second in both league and regional competitions. Baysinger said she was proud that the team has consistently gotten better since her freshman year, with everything falling into place this season. She was happy to compete in vault and floor exercise, her two favorite events, at state as her gymnastics career winds down. Burns added while the Cougars were improving each year, so was the competition, so there was even more pressure to do well.
While both Baysinger and Burns also compete in club gymnastics, they say being on a high school team stresses the team part of the competition over individual achievements. “We are like a sisterhood,” Burns said, adding that she still talks to teammates who were seniors when she was a freshman. Baysinger, who doesn’t plan to continue gymnastics in college, said she will miss the community atmosphere of the sport and seeing the same people while training for the last 10 years. “I’ve been in the gym for so long and have seen those familiar faces,” she said. “I will miss that.” Cowden said he and assistant coach Madi Lopp were trying to create a culture where everyone can participate, no matter what their
skill level. Like many high school coaches, he hopes traits the gymnasts learn in the sport translate to college and life such discipline, focus, dedication and training. “It may be cliche, but they will succeed because of their dedication to whatever they decide to do thanks to their training in what I believe is one of the most difficult sports around,” Cowden said. Baysinger and Burns also coach younger gymnasts, and Cowden likes watching them pass on their knowledge to their younger teammates. “We can talk about the technical side, but it’s the way they deliver the information to the younger generation,” Cowden said. It’s a joy to watch.”

the project. “In light of the prevailing financial challenges marked by the rapid surge in interest rates and the
persistent upward trajectory of construction costs, we have undertaken a comprehensive reevaluation of the Proforma for the RED Hotel project,” the letter said. “… This rigorous review process has led us to chart a sustainable course of action that rekindles the viability of introducing a small boutique hotel to this area.” The proposal that will be brought before the Morrison Planning Commission on Feb. 13 could be different than the proposal provided to the town in 2023. December 25 – 10:30am: Christmas Day Worship Service
This coming Christmas Eve at 5 PM, we will be celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. There will not be a service on Christmas Day, as we plan to celebrate at home with family and friends. On New Years Day at 10 AM, we will gather for a regular Sunday worship service, as we do on every Sunday morning at 10 AM. We are located in Bailey at 966 Rim Rock Road, just off of Route 285 across from the Will-O-Wisp housing development and just southwest of Pine Junction. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

at 205 Bear Creek Ave. was constructed in 1879 and was known as the Tom Lewis home. An evaluation found it was not structurally sound due to extensive damage. The property is between Morrison Mercantile on the east and Café Prague on the west. Root Architecture wants to build a three-story building with a 1,215 square-foot, 46-seat rooftop patio, according to the Morrison Planning Commission documents. EPRD board to approve its budget in January
The Evergreen Park & Recreation District board will approve its 2024 budget on Jan. 9, and included is the beginning of the deferred maintenance projects the district promised to do with the money it will receive thanks to a property-tax extension approved by voters in November. District officials, knowing the dis-

trict will get the money beginning in 2025, are pulling money from some reserve funds to begin maintenance, knowing the money can be returned in a year. “There will be a lot of front-facing and back-facing projects,” Cory Vander Veen, the rec district’s executive director, said. “Our buildings and amenities definitely need it.” One of the first expenses will be to purchase portable toilets for district parks that staff can maintain. Vander Veen called improving the quality of the portable toilets an obligation to the public In addition, the budget will provide money for new equipment, new doors, improvements to bathrooms and the Buchanan Park Recreation Center pool. Board President Peter Eggers on Dec. 6 urged the public to have patience as the rec district works to make improvements. “We are confident if we manage the funds right, we can get a lot accomplished,” Eggers said. “We are going to take care of a lot of small
things in a hurry.” Skatepark Coalition begins fundraising
The Evergreen Skatepark Coalition wants to raise $40,000 by July to help the Evergreen Park & Recreation District as it pursues a plan for Buchanan Park that the coalition hopes will include a skatepark. The coalition will be using the rec district’s foundation, Active4All, to collect money. “The important part of this is ultimately we can leverage some of the momentum we have to help apply for grants and use $40,000 for additional grants, not just for the skatepark but other improvements for Buchanan Park,” Matt Buzas, whose family started the coalition, told the rec district board on Dec. 6. Buzas said he is hoping the private-public partnership between the coalition and the rec district could serve as a model for other partnerships that could benefit the entire community. Twelve acres on the southern boundary of Staunton State Park is becoming a conservation easement, so it will remain untouched for years to come. The Mountain Area Land Trust announced the private voluntary conservation easement from Carol Phelps and her late husband Bob, who have owned the property for more than three decades and treasure the natural beauty of the area. This property has views of “Lion’s Head,” the highest peak at the park and a popular hiking destination. Elk Creek runs through the property year-round, offering significant wildlife habitat, water access and outstanding biodiversity. “I have such a special property, and it is in a vulnerable place,” Carol Phelps said. “I really wanted to have all the animals, the plants, the fishes and all the other living things, and all the spirits that went before to know that this land is preserved and protected forever. My late husband Bob would have wished for this with all his heart.”

NOW HERE’S A TIP * It might be hard to get or stay motivated for exercise once we’ve dipped into shortened days and lower temperatures. Exercise is so important to your health, so get it any way you can. Did you know that a half-hour snowball fight can burn 100 calories? Get out there and enjoy the winter weather! -- JoAnn * If you frequently face snow in your area, invest in a pair of running shoes that are designed for trail running. They have deeper cleats for better traction. Some are even waterproof. This will encourage you to run when it’s been snowing! * “To help your sneakers dry faster, remove the laces and sock liner and hang separately. Stuff them with newspaper to draw out moisture. Hang them to dry on a sturdy hook or line, but not too close to a heater, as it’s possible to break down the support materials that way.” -- E.D. in Minnesota * “If you are outdoors on freezing days, you know to dress in layers.
When you exercise outside, you do that too, but be prepared to strip off a layer if you get overheated. I have a carabiner clip on my waistband, and I can clip my outer light jacket to it, or even my fleece, through a button hole.” -- P.S. in Virginia * “Here’s a tip about sledding in a pinch: A laundry basket can make a fine sled for a small, sturdy kid, especially if you are blessed with surprised snow! If you attach a rope or belt to one side of the basket, it’s easy to pull the kids along.” -- M.B. in Missouri Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL
