Evergreen’s 31st annual Holiday Walk a glowing success

Downtown Evergreen was glowing during the Holiday Walk.

Despite the frigid weather, the glow of the lights, of the hugs, of the shoppers carrying packages and of the people giving high-fives to Frosty dominated the winter wonderland scene.

The 31st annual Holiday Walk on Dec. 1 along Main Street radiated festive spirit.

To kick off the event, Santa and Mrs. Claus were transported to the Evergreen Lake House via horsedrawn carriage, led in by an Evergreen Fire/Rescue fire truck. The jolly couple waved to the crowd, and as he got out of the carriage, Santa SEE HOLIDAY WALK, P4

A neon Christmas event Flashback to the ‘80s was the highlight of Conifer Christmas Parade

This year’s Conifer Christmas Parade was not the typical green-andred holiday experience.

Instead, there was lots of neon — and big hair, really big hair.

Participants in Christmas in Conifer got into this year’s theme: Flashback to the ‘80s. Even Band Kamp, the band entertaining attendees before the parade, commented that people should grab photos of the band in their unusual holiday costumes that they likely would not perform in again.

MTV, neon costumes, ‘80s music and more highlighted the entries in the 40th annual parade, and to make the event’s theme complete, attendees could participate in roller skating and laser tag. Sutton Road was

filled with people despite the chilly temperatures as they enjoyed food, a trackless train, shopping and more.

The parade had about 35 entries from the Conifer High School mountain biking team to Aspen Park Montessori to area businesses. Each en-

try had its unique take on Christmas and the ‘80s theme.

Children rushed to hug Santa, and families got out their phones to take photos with him.

Then, with a countdown from 10 to one, the Christmas tree lights were lit along with lights for a Menorah and a Kwanzaa Kinara. There were ooohs and aaahs as the lights sparkled, and Santa and Mrs. Claus returned to their carriage to make their way to downtown Evergreen.

Most tree-lighting attendees walked along the Evergreen Lake North Trail into downtown Evergreen for more holiday fun.

Zillow Predicts More Homes for Sale and Improved Affordability Next Year

Zillow’s prediction for the housing market in 2024 rings true for me, as an active real estate broker. Early expectations that mortgage interest rates would fall back below 5% kept some would-be buyers from pulling the trigger, but now it’s beginning to sink in that interest rates will stay high, probably in the 7% range.

Home prices are also moderating a little, so buyers who can tolerate higher interest rates are coming off the fence, just as sellers are noticing that homes are selling well in the current environment, albeit for slightly less than they might have received last year.

Meanwhile, would-be home sellers who locked in 3% or lower interest rates on their current home have been described as “rate locked,” unwilling to give up their low mortgage rate and move up (or down) to another home with a higher interest rate. But Zillow feels that a growing number of such would-be sellers have grown weary of waiting for rates to drop and are ready to bite that bullet.

Another option not mentioned by Zillow in their article is that of selling and moving into a rental, especially if they are seniors who will have a big capital gain (after taxes) that will outlive them, or if they want to keep their options open for

buying in the future or moving to another city, state or country.

Another strategy suggested by Zillow is to hold onto one’s current home as an investment property, generating more than enough rental income to pay for a rental elsewhere. The article assumes that you’ll maintain your current low interest rate on your home, although that rate was for owner-occupied property, not an investment property. If your home has a reverse mortgage, you must pay it off if you move out, which likely means you’d have to sell your home, not put it on the rental market.

Here’s their prediction of the national market for next year: “Zillow’s latest forecast calls for home values to hold steady in 2024, falling 0.2%. Predicting how mortgage rates will move is a nearly impossible task, but recent inflation news gives the impression that rates are likely to hold fairly steady as well in the coming months. Taken together, the cost of buying a home looks to be on track to level off next year, with the possibility of costs falling if mortgage rates do.”

Meanwhile, as we approach the holidays, look at the market statistics in this chart of last week’s MLS activity on REcolorado within 18 miles of downtown Denver. It’s no surprise to me that the biggest number is that of price reductions, yet we are still seeing a healthy number of new listings, listings that went under contract and listings that closed last week. In other words, this is a market that is not stagnating. It is just waiting for more right-priced listings to satisfy pent-up demand by buyers, not all of whom are off the fence — yet.

I’m often asked whether winter is a good time to sell a home. Well, I just listed a $1.5 million home in Golden, and in the first 24 hours of it being “coming soon” on the MLS, over 10 agents with buyers set a showing for it. It drew multiple offers — the first one before showings began — and sold above it’s asking price

in 4 days. I have another listing going on the market in mid-January, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets the same reception.

It’s all about knowing the right price in that listing’s neighborhood. These two listings just happen to be in highly desirable subdivisions and in excellent condition. A listing elsewhere might get fewer showings and end up becoming one of the “price reduced” statistics.

Winter, I’ve found, is a great time to list a home because there are still lots of buyers getting automated email alerts of new listings, and there are fewer listings competing for their attention.

The amount of new construction in the Denver metro area, especially of apartment buildings, has been dazzling. All year, for example, I’ve been following the construction of a 340-unit apartment building across from my 2-bed-room rental at Solana Lakewood, and last week Rita and I moved into a 3-bedroom rental in GW Apartments, a brand new building on South Golden Road. A block away on the other side of South Golden Road, there’s a yellow rezoning sign stating that a 353unit mixed-use project is planned on what is currently vacant land.

Yes, new single-family homes are still being built, but they are far outnumbered by rental apartment buildings, and it’s not slowing down.

About a decade ago, the construction of condos stalled because of a surge in construction defect litigation by lawyers representing condo associations the way personal injury lawyers operate. Legislation was eventually passed to reduce the incidence of such lawsuits, but it didn’t bring

back the construction of condos as many observers had expected.

Developers accelerated the building of rental units as condo development stalled, and it just kept accelerating after that construction defect issue was mitigated. The completion of the FasTracks’ light rail and commuter rail project created a boom in TOD — transit-oriented development, almost entirely rental apartment buildings — within blocks of virtually every light rail and commuter rail station.

Now, with the cost of mortgage lending so much higher — more than doubled in the past 20 months — the boom in apartment construction and demand remains unabated. Meanwhile, we’re seeing a slowdown in single-family construction, with the emphasis on higher-density multi-unit construction.

There is also a new emphasis on local governments allowing single-family lots to add ADUs — accessory dwelling units — which is further increasing housing density across the metro area.

they could promote their businesses and programs. Members of Team Blitz, for example, wearing neon green capes, wanted to promote the mountain-area robotics team and to see if it could get more members.

Peak Academy of Dance performers danced their way down the parade route, while the Conifer High School marching band kept in the ‘80s spirit by playing songs such as “Danger Zone.”

Liz Wehr, a coach with the Conifer High School mountain bike team, said the team was participating in the parade to find new members for the growing team and to show support for the community.

“It’s cold, and we’re riding bikes,” she said, smiling.

“We do a lot of hayrides,” Santiago Grado, the school’s owner and director, said, adding that he just wanted

parade participants to have fun.

Melissa Bartt carried a large ‘80sstyle phone as she walked along the

parade route with The Venue Theatre’s MTV-themed float. She said the theater has been part of the Conifer Christmas Parade for 10 years, and it appreciated the community’s support.

Bartt chatted with Becky Paschke, an assistant principal at Conifer High School, who dressed in an elf costume. Paschke said as the person in charge of activities for the school, she appreciated what organizations like The Venue Theatre did for the community.

Jeff Young, veterinarian and driving force behind Planned Pethood, stood on the clinic’s float, wearing a blond mullet wig while other members of his staff wore animal costumes. Young moved Planned Pethood, which is the subject of an Animal Planet show called “Rocky Mountain Vet,” to Conifer earlier this year.

“This should be a fun time,” Young said as his team prepared to move along the parade route. “This is the first time we’re participating (in the Conifer Christmas Parade) and hopefully it won’t be our last.”

JCOS to change Mount Falcon trailhead to stop overuse by commercial photographers

Jeffco Open Space will make changes to the Morrison Trailhead of Mount Falcon Park to stop overuse of the park by commercial photographers.

Morrison officials contacted Jeffco Open Space because photographers are using undesignated trails to get Red Rocks and Mount Morrison as the background for their photos, and officials have been concerned about the area further degrading.

JCOS plans a multifaceted approach to curb overuse of the area, according to information supplied at the Morrison Town Board meeting on Dec. 5.

JCOS said in a memo to the Morrison Town Board that professional photographers with permits were not violating any rules.

However, JCOS will emphasize to them that they must stay on paths and clean up after photo shoots.

JCOS also promises to construct two hardened crusher pads with timber borders and designate those areas as photography points and create gravel trails to those pads. It also will close and remediate undesignated trails.

Trustee David Wirtz, who brought the issue to the town board’s attention a few months ago, said he thought the plan would work well.

5 bear-resistant trash bins

bear-resistant trash bins as it begins replacing them in the town’s public areas.

The trash bins, which will also have recycling receptacles, will cost $8,000 total and be purchased from Bear Saver.

According to information provided by the town, the town has a problem with bears and raccoons ransacking trash cans, making a mess and polluting the river, “but also fostering an unnatural behavior in the animals to eat the trash and identify these areas as a location with consistent food.”

Town Manager Kara Winters said the Planning Commission would like trash bins all over town to be converted to bear-resistant containers.

Dan Lamont, Morrison’s streets and grounds director, said one would be placed behind Willie’s Wings because a lot of raccoons get into that bin. Other locations are still to be determined.

The resolution approved by the Town Board on Dec. 5 also states that the board will consider continuing trash-bin replacement to eventually replace most of the town-serviced public trash cans with this combination setup.

Improving pedestrian safety

Morrison plans to participate in a Zero Vision Action Plan grant along with Jefferson County and Lakewood.

The grant allows government entities to look at intersections to see whether pedestrian safety can be improved. Town Manager Kara Winters said there was no cost to the town

unless it decided to make improvements.

Trustees at the Dec. 5 meeting said the pedestrian crossing at the Rocket station on Rooney Road should be considered for improvements.

Winters will begin researching how the town can take advantage of the grant dollars.

Curbing noise in Morrison

Morrison trustees continued to discuss curbing noise within the town, especially on Highway 8, after residents in the Willow Springs subdivision in November asked that trucks from the Morrison Quarry not use jake brakes.

Police Chief Bill Vinelli said at the Dec. 5 trustees meeting that the jake brakes’ loudness was part of traffic enforcement, and he suggested a “no engine muffler brakes” sign be erected.

Some trustees were concerned that Morrison already had too many signs, and they should be consolidated before new signs are added. Plus adding signs to highways requires approval by the Colorado Department of Transportation.

“The sound reverberates through the canyon and along Highway 74,” Trustee Katie Gill said. “It is a problem for those who live in those areas. I do want there to be places where we say, ‘Slow down before you get into town.’

I want there to be some enforcement on (Highway) 8 and (Highway) 74. I’m not saying we need more signs, but we will see how it goes.”

Beginning with snowflakes, ending with pinball Parmalee Elementary second graders learning the technology to create using a 3D printer

Snowflakes and pinball machines are related in Katie Offerman’s secondgrade class at Parmalee Elementary.

That’s because students learned how to run a program to design snowflakes and printed them on the classroom’s 3D printer on their way to designing, creating and 3D printing their own pinball machines.

Before Thanksgiving, students learned to use a program called Tinkercad to design snowflakes with six dendrites and size parameters. Once Offerman approved their designs, they printed out their creations.

This is the first step in a project where students will design simple pinball

“This is more authentic learning and something they may want to do in real life,” Offerman said of pinball. “This project has evolved as the year has gone on.”

“This is kind of cool,” he added.

Second grader Andecy Post said she really liked creating a snowflake on her own because she really liked snowflakes. She said the assignment hadn‘t been easy but she liked making her own designs.

“This is really fun, and I’m really excited to see how easy (the pinball game) is to play,” Andecy said.

Andecy brought her Chromebook to Offerman, who checked her snowflake-design work.

“You used every design aspect I asked for,” Offerman told her. “Good job.”

Long live the king: What coal’s decline says about natural gas

F

ifteen years can make a huge difference.

I vividly remember attending the annual meeting of the Delta-Montrose Electric Association in 2008. An extravagance of red, white, and blue bunting disguised the loading dock of the electrical cooperative where directors of Delta-Montrose sat. They were staking out a new definition of patriotism.

Their wholesale supplier, TriState Generation & Transmission, wanted to build a giant coal plant in Kansas to meet escalating electrical demand. Tri-State asked its 44 member cooperatives in Colorado and three adjoining states to extend their all-requirements contracts to 2050.

Delta-Montrose and a cooperative based in Taos, N.M., balked.

The keynote speaker, the chief executive of a state trade organization closely aligned with Tri-State, reprimanded Delta-Montrose. Coal, he insisted, was the answer then—and far into the future.

The facts seemed to be on his side.

Coal extraction reached a new peak in 2008. It was cheap and plentiful.

Natural gas prices, though, had reached stratospheric levels. The marvels of hydraulic fracturing had not yet produced the bounty of hydrocarbons. As for wind and solar, their prices were declining, but they generally remained more expensive.

Last week, Tri-State, Colorado’s second largest electrical utility announced it wants to accelerate the closing of its final coal-burning unit at Craig to 2028, two years earlier than previously scheduled. It will also close a newish coal plant in Arizona by 2031. These plans depend upon whether Tri-State can get federal aid earmarked by the Inflation Reduction Act for retiring stranded assets.

As for that coal plant in Pueblo, it’s to close by 2031, possibly earlier.

Original date: 2070.

Good thing Tri-State failed to build that giant coal plant in Kansas in 2008. Extraction of coal in the United States peaked that year. Coal was king. Look at it now.

Now, as they plan their systems 15 years into the future, Xcel Energy and Tri-State, the state’s two largest electrical utilities, both want to build natural gas plants as they close coal plants. Fort Collins-based Platte River Power Authority, the

However, directors from the four northern Colorado municipal utilities have given managers authority to begin the permitting process.

The utilities must meet peak demands when renewables come up short. One such time came in February 2021. Winds ceased blowing for several days. Solar production was thin. Tri-State resorted to burning oil to create electricity.

Our hot days of summer will likely get hotter yet. Colorado this year was cool, but still new heat records were set or tied in Alamosa, Grand Junction, and elsewhere. We can expect increased heat. If unlikely, it’s still possible that the Front Range cities could have a few unprecedented days of 108 to 110 degrees— or even hotter. Air conditioners would go crazy.

Finally, while demand has flattened in recent years, the result of improved energy efficiency, utilities expect sharp increases as we try to electrify most everything. Transportation will happen most easily, but buildings will take time.

Natural gas has been called the bridge to decarbonization. How far out do we need this bridge? Even the utility managers that I consider rock stars of the energy transition differ.

Mark Gabriel, CEO of United Power, the 110,000-member cooperative north of Denver, insists we’ll need some small amounts of

natural gas to mid-century. At Holy Cross Energy, the cooperative serving the Vail and Aspen areas, Bryan Hannegan is stretching to achieve emissions-free electricity by 2030.

That sounds like no natural gas.

A study commissioned by the Colorado Energy Office also sees a small role for natural gas, about 1.5% in 2040. For 100% emissionsfree electricity, the costs escalate.

Might a new technology arrive? A game-changer would be long-duration and affordable storage such as that which could hoard surplus wind generation for 100 hours or more. Working with Form Energy, Xcel Energy will test one such technology in Pueblo in 2024. Or could smaller solutions broadly distributed be the answer?

Colorado regulators on Wednesday began talking about Xcel’s plans. Megan Gilman, a public utilities commissioner from Edwards, and Tom Plant, a commissioner from Buena Vista, both identified the problem of leaving electric customers on the hook for the costs of building natural gas plants if they become stranded by new technology.

Another way of saying this is that nobody has all the answers. Just keep in mind that just 15 years ago coal was king.

If he would grudgingly stand aside, Matthau wouldn’t do it quietly. “You’re polluting my yard!” he bellowed, embroidering that and many other outraged observations with ornate streams of profanity and personal insults. Officers advised Matthau to pipe down because JCSO dispatch was getting flooded with noise complaints from the surrounding neighbors. Matthau roared that he could say whatever he wanted to, as loud as he wanted to “until 10 p.m.!” Officers informed

him that wasn’t strictly true. ‘I know my rights!” screamed Matthau, adding that he could hardly wait to file lawsuits against Lemmon, the plumber, JCSO, the judge, Denver Water, and possibly a manufacturer of PVC pipe to be named later. Deputies invited him to take whatever action he deemed appropriate, so long as he did it after the plumber finished restoring Lemmon’s water.

Despite Matthau’s best efforts, Lemmon got his water and the neighborhood got some peace.

Point of contention

EVERGREEN – On the morning of Oct. 30, Martha asked JCSO to investigate the large screw sticking out of the sidewall of her tire. Eager to assist them in their probings, Martha told them her neighbor, Gwyneth, put it there. She said that she and Gwyneth have been on the outs following a minor dust-up over gymnasium privileges. Martha then produced a witness for the prosecution, another neighbor who’d previously suffered similar tire damage also anecdotally ascribed to Gwyneth. Testifying in her own defense, Gwyneth said she didn’t know what her accusers were talking about, and that she was far too busy “trying my best to stay away” from Martha and Co. to mess with anybody’s Michelins. With only her word for evidence, Martha’s case never got any traction.

Bad news on the doorstep

CONIFER – Having never before observed a large, dead raccoon piled on his front doormat before, he found the presence of same suspicious. Also irregular was the handwritten note attached to the cadaverous critter reading “(Nuts to) You.” Unable to think of anyone who might wish to increase his net happiness by one lifeless bag of guts, he posed the question to JCSO deputies, who advised him to notify authorities should similar housewarming gifts present themselves, then tagged and bagged the disgusting deposit for later disposal in the department’s state-of-the-art ‘coon carcass disposal facility.

Frenemy mine

EVERGREEN – Bill said he used to get along just dandy with all of his neighbors. But ever since Phil moved in next door, Bill complained

to deputies, he gets along just dandy with all of his neighbors except Phil.

Specifically, beefed Bill, Phil calls him mean names. A lot. Like, constantly. Bill wanted officers to charge Phil with harassment, or public obscenity, or bad citizenship, or whatever they thought appropriate under the circumstances. Deputies told Bill that nothing he ascribed to his neighbor was properly criminal, but promised to pop next door and find out why Phil didn’t like Bill. Phil assured officers that he likes Bill fine.

Phil said he’s had Bill over for supper a time or three and Bill’s repaid the gesture more than once. Fact is, Phil said, Bill’s a pretty nice fellow when he’s not working his way to the bottom of a 12-pack. After a few cold one’s he can be a mite ornery.

Phil admitted getting drawn into the occasional argument with his excessively refreshed neighbor, but said he’s never considered it a problem.

Thanking Phil for his time, deputies walked back to Bill’s house and suggested he submit any further complaints on the subject to his homeowner’s association. Bill promised to act on that suggestion.

Point of no return

EVERGREEN – The man with the Carhart beanie on his head strode confidently through the front door on the morning of Nov. 8, selected a brand-new feeding tub from its display, hoisted a brand-new bag of pellets from its pallet, drew a brandnew ratchet set from its shelf, and then walked all three items over to the cashier to “return” them for a full refund. Gifted with the reasoning abilities common to higher primates, the cashier quickly surmised that Beanie was the same fellow who returned an identical brandnew ratchet set for refund just days before and was probably the same fellow who’s been pulling identical shenanigans at identical stores in Conifer and Thornton. Assured that no refund would be forthcoming, Beanie simply bolted back out the front door, taking the armload of non-refundables with him. The case remains open pending additional information.

Charles “Chuck” Dean Purcell, Jr. April 15, 1925 - November 28, 2023

Longtime Evergreen resident Chuck Purcell recently passed away peacefully in his sleep. He was 98 years old. Chuck was born in Kansas City, Missouri. He is survived by his daughters Rene Marshall and SJ Purcell and sons Warren, Scott, and Jay Purcell. He also is survived by three stepchildren: Vince Allen, Kelly Allen, and Jill Baker. Altogether, Chuck had 21 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Chuck enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943 and served as a ball turret gunner in a B-24 bomber in Europe during WWII. His twin brother, Warren, enlisted in the Army infantry at the same time. He deployed to France, where he was killed in action in 1944 at the age of 19. Chuck also lost his sister, Mary Frances, at an early age in 1968.

He established a successful carpet distribution business in Denver, serving clients in the western United States. In 1977, he went to work for Shaw Industries, selling carpet to large retail stores in California and major casino hotels and retailers in Las Vegas. He retired in 1992 in Evergreen.

Chuck cared for his wife, Mary Lou, for several years before she passed away in 2001. Later that year, Chuck married family friend and widow, Carole Koch Allen, also of Evergreen. Interestingly, Chuck, Anna, Mary Lou, and her spouse knew Carole and her husband from the same social club in Oklahoma decades earlier. During that time, he met his first wife, Anna their home on Upper Bear Creek. Carole passed away in their home in 2022.

S

taring into a kiln glowing orange at 2,350 degrees, an artist armed with thick leather gloves holds a fragile piece of molten glass at the end of a steel rod.

This is the point where creativity, talent and inspiration combine to create a one-of-a-kind piece of glass never to be duplicated.

Sand and silica are the main components; soda ash and lime are combined to the mixture as raw ingredients, Corey Siverman of The Furnace: A Glassworks in Lakewood said. Industrial glass that’s made in a factory by machines works in a different way versus what we do by hand.

The Furnace is a glass workshop that dedicates 90% of its production to retail sales, according to Siverman. Thousands of ornaments will be handmade and shipped from this location.

“I have galleries all around the country. I’ve got over 100 galleries that buy my work,” Siverman said during a recent interview at his small production facility. “I sell to magazines. I sell to corporate gift companies. I sell to a lot of retail buyers through our store here. As well as Etsy, so we have a wide variety of customers.”

The months leading up to the holidays are the busiest time of year for Siverman and his coowner and wife, Leanne.

Siverman started blowing glass objects/art more than 30 years ago, he said he’s still learning.

“You start with a clear glass that’s molten out of the furnace at 2,100 degrees, gather it up on your blowpipe, and apply a color called Frit,” Siverman said. “You then reheat the glass, shape it and put a bubble into it after you put a pattern into it with your color. Once you’ve got your shape the way you want it you let it stabilize, you finish it off and put it in the oven (about 500 degrees) for as many as 12 hours.”

The Furnace is not only a commercial facility, employing less than a dozen production and distribution assistants, it’s a learning environment, offering introductory instruction to anyone with a desire to learn the craft.

“You learn something every time you walk through the door,” Siverman said about the classes.

However, patience, practice and commitment are prerequisites.

“People ask me, ‘How long will it take me to get good?’” Silverman said. “I like to tell people it’s a 10year commitment before you’re really good at this. You have to be very committed to it.”

Yet, each piece is completely original to the artist.

“The goal is to make products that will not be like anything you’ve ever seen before,” Siverman said.

Cremation Glass Art offers ashes in eternal suspension In an unassuming garage in Greeley, an artist incorporates the cremated ashes of loved ones

and even pets into molded and forged glass pieces that are incomparable.

“For the cremation art I do believe that working with human ashes is what hits my heart and soul the most,” said Tiffany Koehn with Red Manx Studio.

During a recent visit with the artist, Koehn worked to fold, curl and mold a small piece of molten glass in a 2,150 degree gas-fired kiln.

The idea of incorporating precious ashes within the glass was conceived in 2009, Koehn said. The epiphany was achieved with a very personal story.

In 2008, Koehn’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“Mom’s cancer journey and watching her and everybody in that chemo room teetering on death hit me,” Koehn said. “Mom came out of it, but there’s a lot of people in that chemo room that didn’t live through their experiences.”

“If I can help families get through it with something more special than a box on a mantle, then that’s what I want to do, especially with the children’s pieces,” Koehn said.

Here the customer, their story and vision are incorporated in each unique color selection and swirl of soft molten glass.

Koehn welcomes each buyer to be part of the process and witness the creation of the unique glass piece as it’s conceived and shaped in her small garage.

Nearly a dozen times over, Koehn heated and shaped the glass at the end of a metal pipe.

Koehn uses a unique tool made of wet wood which is created by several species of bacteria that enter a tree through wounds, keeping the wood malleable, which is perfect against the blazing hot temperatures of the molten glass.

The soft cylindrical shape of the wood creates the rounded edges with continuous turning of the delicate glass.

Koehn spends at least 18 hours repeating the process of heating, shaping, molding and cooling each glass piece.

In the end, each customer is presented with a keepsake unlike any in existence, just like their loved one.

An anchor desk makes a world of difference for Evergreen High School’s ETV

Sometimes one school’s trash can be another school’s treasure.

Evergreen High School’s broadcast class now has an anchor desk, allowing the students who create a weekly news broadcast to look more professional. How ETV wound up with the desk is a lesson in both happenstance and networking, a typical occurrence in the foothills.

It started when Hal Farmwald, EHS’ broadcast teacher, told the program’s sponsor Michele Vanags that he wanted to get an anchor desk for the ETV broadcast. Pam Lindquist, who works for Vanags, heard about the request, was talking to Tim Vialpando, the Evergreen Middle School principal, and mentioned the anchor-desk need.

Vialpando went to his STEM teacher, Jonathan Russell, asking if an anchor desk that EMS no longer needed was still around. It was — gathering dust in a closet. And the rest is broadcast history, as it were.

Over Thanksgiving, several students hauled the desk from EMS to EHS, and it is now set up in the classroom where ETV creates its broadcasts. A 130-inch banner wraps the desk with the Evergreen Cougars and the Michele Vanags

“At first when (Farmwald) came to us, we began brainstorming,” said Lindquist, who is the public outreach coordinator for Vanags. “How could we buy one or get someone to build one?”

Instead, the problem was solved thanks to a conversation.

Russell said EMS was planning to get rid of the desk to make room for other STEM-related equipment, so it was nice to put the desk to good use elsewhere.

Both Farmwald and students in the ETV class are thrilled with the new anchor desk, saying it makes the news broadcast more professional. Before getting the desk, anchors sat in chairs.

“This improves our episodes,” said junior Riddik Sanford, who helps edit, anchor and report sports for the broadcast. He said he liked the new Cougars logo on the banner.

“This makes us look more professional,” said junior Rob Beldock, who is the main sports reporter and editor.

Farmwald was surprised at how quickly it happened — he had a conversation one week, and a week later he got a call saying an anchor desk would be on its way. He said the anchor desk will mean some reconfiguring of the room used to film the ETV broadcast, but that’s a small price to pay for getting the desk.

“We have no budget,” Farmwald said. “I thank people like (Vanags) who make this happen.”

Expansion begins at Center for the Arts Evergreen

This fall a woman walked into the gallery at Center for the Arts Evergreen (CAE). She brought her own stool because sitting during the long car ride from Highlands Ranch to CAE bothered her back. She wrapped herself in a blanket because she’s “always cold.” The woman sat quietly in front of an acrylic painting filled with movement—tall grasses blowing in the wind and wildflowers dotting the fields. Tears filled her eyes and she spoke in a whisper. “This reminds me of the summer I met my husband. My childhood in the Midwest.” Other residents from her assisted living facility joined her in the gallery, and she eagerly drew them to the painting, a painting that brought to life her days as a young newlywed. Soon, they were all sharing their stories.

OF THE MONTH Academy, a charter school in Evergreen supporting the needs of dyslexic children, visited CAE. When asked about his favorite artwork, one student pointed to a sculpture of a crumpled woman with her head in her hands. “This one makes me feel sad.” As the middle schoolers created artwork inspired by what they’d seen in the gallery, the boy painted a figure. The boy’s figure, in the same pose as the sculpture, had its face raised.

She was smiling and surrounded by children reaching out to her. “In my painting she’s happy because her friends are helping her.”

Every day, Center for the Arts Evergreen staff and visitors are reminded of the power of art in building community and uniting us. Art brings us together physically—at gallery exhibitions, at concerts, and at classes and workshops. It also brings us together culturally—telling our community’s shared stories and inspiring us to think about others, create connections, and engage in a meaningful life.

While the Evergreen Children’s Chorale got the audience to join in singing Christmas carols, Buddy the Elf stood in the middle of Main Street, looking for Santa and pos-

ing for pictures. Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer walked up and down Main Street, too, stopping to greet attendees.

Businesses in downtown Evergreen put on their Christmas best with lights and decorations to put the glow into Main Street, and many people stopped to see what was available and to warm up.

The Evergreen Downtown Business Association along with its title sponsor Evergreen Rodeo provided the perfect ambience for the annual event that brings hundreds to the area.

Evergreen boys basketball reloads with younger players in 2023 Cougars lose 7 seniors, will rely on some new faces this year

After a 12-12 season, which had its bright spots, Evergreen boys basketball will have to find a new identity led by mostly younger players this year.

In 2022, the Cougars finished fourth in the 11-team 5A/4A Jeffco League at 7-3 behind D’Evelyn, Green Mountain and Dakota Ridge.

Losing seven seniors and four starters to graduation makes it difficult to string more wins together, but Head Coach Hal Farmwald likes his returning players.

“We’re a very inexperienced team.

We have one starter back and a couple of guys that have played a few minutes,” Farmwald said. “But it’s early in the year and we’re still finding our way. Unfortunately, we have a real juggernaut of a schedule.”

That schedule includes powerhouses like Thomas Jefferson, Denver South, Denver North and a heavy-handed pool of teams in the Longmont tournament, all in December.

The Cougars are currently 1-2 after a season-opening win over Northglenn 38-36 followed by a tough loss to Denver South 54-26. Evergreen then faced a tough Thomas Jefferson team and lost in a close game 44-41.

We sat down with Farmwald for a Q&A below. The broadcast journalism teacher enters his third year as the basketball coach at Evergreen.

Colorado Community Media: What do you think the identity of this team is going to have to be this season to stack wins?

Farmwald: The first thing we need is to just find some continuity on the floor. With so many new players, even though we have a lot of talented kids, sometimes it’s that continuity on the floor that keeps you from being effective. Getting used to play-

ing with each other. Getting used to the different combinations. Simple things like picking each other up when things aren’t going well. We only have two seniors on the roster and only one of those seniors is starting. But you depend on your senior leadership to get you through these times, and with only a couple of guys, it’s difficult.

CCM: You finished fourth in a tough Jeffco League last season.

How do you like your chances in the league this year?

Farmwald: I would like to think we are again in that range of being in the top four in the league.

The league is very stacked this year, by far the best that I’ve seen as the coach. You’ve got a Green Mountain team and Golden and Dakota Ridge who are all getting votes in the state for 5A rankings. So it’s going to be a difficult year in the conference, but we hope that the schedule that we have will prepare us for the conference season when it comes around

the first of the year. So again, I’d like to see us right there at the top after we’ve had a little experience.

CCM: On your team, who are some new or returning players you’ll rely on heavily this year for production and leadership?

Farmwald: Rob Beldock is a junior. He was a starter last year as a sophomore. He’s just a really solid player who won’t always show up on the stat sheet, but he does everything right. He’s a great leader for us and was voted as a captain as a junior, which is a little bit unusual. But that’s just the kind of leader he is and he does a lot of the dirty work for us.

Drew Yager is another junior. He’s a 6’5 wing player, very talented. He can put a lot of points on the board.

Then we have a sophomore center, Lukas McCanna, who is already 6’8 and growing. He’s a really talented player, and I think he’s going to have a monster year. He played varsity as a freshman for us last year. A lot of what we do is going to revolve

around Lukas.

CCM: What’s an expectation you set on the board for this young team?

Farmwald: For us, we’re still learning to really compete at a high level and play as hard as we can possibly play every minute we’re on the floor. That’s a constant theme for us, to never leave anything out on the floor. You need to go as hard as you can every minute you’re out there.

So right now, we work really hard on skill stuff, but it’s the motivation of playing hard and playing together all the time.

CCM: How is the outlook on the program as a whole right now?

Farmwald: When I look at our program, we have a great group of freshmen coming in. I believe I have almost 20 freshmen, eight of whom are playing on the JV team this year.

They are the most competitive group of kids by far that I’ve seen since I’ve been here. They’ve brought a lot of great stuff into our practices.

Rec district board to plan the future of Evergreen’s Buchanan Park

How to develop Buchanan Park is in the forefront of the minds of Evergreen Park & Recreation District officials.

The board on Dec. 6 discussed a year-long process to create a list of projects that could be put in the 42-acre park, engage the public, design the projects and find funding. They hope some of the work could start in early 2025.

“It is important to note that nothing has been planned or set for Buchanan Park,” Liz Cohen, grants and strategy manager for the rec district, said. “We want to make sure what we decide to put in the park is intentional with community input.”

Moving forward with a plan for the park comes from both a strategic plan the board approved in October and a property-tax extension voters approved in November that will help pay to create a plan. A community survey that was part of the strategic planning process showed residents wanted more amenities in the park, and the strategic plan recommends $1.3 million to $2.1 million in improvements to the park in the next five years.

The strategic plan notes that the community wanted the rec district to provide a gathering area with water features to acquire additional land, build a multi-season ice skating/roller rink and relocate and update the skatepark that is currently located behind the Wulf Recreation Center.

According to an initial timeline the board reviewed, conceptual planning of potential elements in the park is expected to be done by January followed by community engagement in February and the creation of a preliminary design in March. District officials hope to create a site

plan and get more community input in the spring and summer of 2024, then identify projects that could be done quickly and funding sources later in 2024.

“I’d like to see this project move quickly,” board member Don Rosenthal said.

Board member Betsy Hays said community meetings should be conducted outside at the park so people could see where amenities could be placed. That would be better than just showing drawings, she said.

Efforts to create the park began in 1994, and voters approved three bond issues over the years to help acquire park land and to build the rec center. Board President Peter Eggers served on a committee in 2008 that created a plan for Buchanan Park.

“It was very general, and we knew we were going to create something that someone else will fill in,” Eggers said. “We’re doing the fill-in now.”

Two Evergreen companies, EV Studio and Valarian LLC, are interested in helping with planning Buchanan Park. Dean Dalvit said EV Studio’s interest was community-based.

“This kind of project is near and dear to my heart,” Dalvit said. “Professionally, our firm is capable of designing and creating construction documents.

We also can talk about how we should partner with others in the community to get the best out of what each group can bring.”

Brent Kaslon with Valarian LLC, which does park development, landscaping design and community engagement, said community input was vital to the project’s success.

“If we can come together as a community and come together with ideas, it will be a better project for Evergreen,” Kaslon said. “It’s a community effort, and we are just there to help facilitate.”

The CM/GC Contract will include the following services and Work: Construction of Improvements for Roxborough Water and Sanitation Districts Zone 2, 3 and 4 Pump Stations; preconstruction services including design workshops and meetings, development of construction cost estimates, scheduling/ phasing plans, document/constructability reviews, site visits and procurement services seeking qualified construction subcontractors for specified Work packages.

2. All such claims shall be filed with Heather Frizzell, Director of Finance Jefferson County Colorado, 100 Jefferson County Parkway, Golden CO 80419-4560.

Owner anticipates that the CM/GC’s Contract Price will be approximately $3,000,000.00. The CM/GC Contract has an expected start date in the first quarter of 2024.

3. Failure on the part of a creditor to file such statement prior to such final settlement will relieve the County of Jefferson, State of Colorado, from any and all liability for such claim.

Two-Step Selection Process Selection of the Construction Manager/General Contractor will be made using a two-step process. Step One: Owner will receive Statements of Qualification and evaluate these, along with other information, to develop a list of the most highly qualified Proposers. Selection criteria and scoring included in the Request for Qualifications.

The District Board of Directors anticipates meeting January 17, 2024 during which the Board will consider a short list of one or more, but no more than five, qualified firms which the District believes to be the most qualified pursuant C.R.S. Section 32-1-1805(2). Step Two: The short list selections will receive a Request for Proposal and will submit a detailed Proposal for the CM/ GC Contract for the Owner’s consideration. The Owner, at its discretion, may elect to conduct Interviews after receiving Proposals. Points previously awarded during step one and step two of the selection process may be adjusted based on information obtained during the Interview. Selection criteria and scoring included in the Request for Qualifications will be used to determine the final rankings of Proposers for award of the CM/ GC Contract. The Owner will evaluate these rankings, along with other information, to select the most highly qualified Proposer.

O-Line Replacement Owner will receive Statements of Qualifications demonstrating the Proposer’s qualifications and ability to provide CM/GC services and construct the Project by email sent to Kelli Kavinsky at KKavinsky@tstinfrastructure.com until Thursday, January 4, 2024 at 1:00 PM local time. After that time, Owner will no longer accept Statements of Qualifications. See Requests for Qualifications for details on preparing and submitting the Statement of Qualifications.

The CM/GC Contract will include the following services and Work: Construction of approximately 800 linear feet of 30-inch gravity sewer, 50 linear feet of 12-inch gravity sewer, and six 72-inch manholes for Roxborough Water and Sanitation District’s O-Line Interceptor; preconstruction services including design workshops and meetings, development of construction cost estimates, scheduling/phasing plans, document/ constructability reviews, site visits and procurement services seeking qualified construction subcontractors for specified Work packages.

Owner anticipates that the CM/GC’s Contract Price will be approximately $700,000.00. The CM/GC Contract has an expected start date in the first quarter of 2024.

Obtaining the Proposal Documents Prospective proposers are required to be listed on the plan holders list to be considered. Project Information and Proposal Documents will be available for download at no cost in PDF format.

Proposal Documents for the CM/GC Contract must be requested by email from Kelli Kavinsky at KKavinsky@TSTInfrastructure.com. Upon TST’s receipt of email requesting Project Documents, the Prospective Proposers will be added to the plan holders list and emailed instructions to download Project Information and Proposal Documents.

An Information Conference regarding the CM/ GC Contract and CM/GC selection process will be held on Thursday, December 21, 2023 at 1:00 PM virtually via Microsoft Teams Link located in the Request for Qualifications. Attendance at the Information Conference is optional.

Two-Step Selection Process Selection of the Construction Manager/General Contractor will be made using a two-step process. Step One: Owner will receive Statements of Qualification and evaluate these, along with other information, to develop a list of the most highly qualified Proposers. Selection criteria and scoring included in the Request for Qualifications.

The District Board of Directors anticipates meeting January 17, 2024 during which the Board will consider a short list of one or more, but no more than five, qualified firms which the District believes to be the most qualified pursuant C.R.S. Section 32-1-1805(2). Step Two: The short list selections will receive a Request for Proposal and will submit a detailed Proposal for the CM/ GC Contract for the Owner’s consideration. The Owner, at its discretion, may elect to conduct Interviews after receiving Proposals. Points previously awarded during step one and step two of the selection process may be adjusted based on information obtained during the Interview. Selection criteria and scoring included in the Request for Qualifications will be used to determine the final rankings of Proposers for award of the CM/ GC Contract. The Owner will evaluate these rankings, along with other information, to select the most highly qualified Proposer.

Refer to the Proposal Documents for all further requirements regarding Statements of Qualifications, Proposals, CM/GC selection, and other Proposal submittals, qualifications, and procedures .

This Christmas the Mountain Backpack Program needs your help!

Our food pantries, located at 11 local schools, also provide approximately 500 snack items to students every week.

Each year we send boxes of food and grocery gift cards home with children in the Mountain Backpack Program for winter break. We are currently supporting 65 children in 11 schools and hope to make sure they all have breakfasts, lunches, and snacks for each day they are not in school over the break.
