Evergreen Fire/Rescue board sets rules for communication with department staff

The Evergreen Fire/Rescue board has laid out a series of rules for communication between the elected board and the department’s staff and volunteers, stressing that staff and volunteers must follow the chain of command rather than going to board members first.

The board released an opinion from its attorney and two statements about board conduct in midNovember after a board member breached the confidentiality of an executive session by telling some firefighters what was said in the meeting. A board member also tried to influence a district personnel decision, according to fire board attorney Linda Glesne’s memo.

The names of the board members were not provided.

Stacey Ballinger, president of the EFR board, said the board’s intent was not to stop communication among what she calls team members and the board but to put up guardrails, so staff and volunteers don’t try to circumvent the chain of command.

“This is not to end communication,” Ballinger said after the Nov. 21 meeting. “The purpose is to make sure communication flows in an appropriate line. … We want to make sure we set the right direction.”

The board read a statement and unanimously approved a “Censorship Policy” that will be put into the board’s bylaws.

By law, elected officials or anyone else allowed to attend an executive session, which is another name for a closed meeting, are not allowed to divulge what was discussed in the meeting.

New rules regarding communication

According to the board statement, the board “insists” on the following: • Team members must adhere to the chain of command, not approaching board members to air grievances regarding personnel or policy. “To have people with influence in the department disregard the chain of command shows a lack of commitment to the standard by which leadership should and will be judged,” the statement said.

• If there is a grievance that isn’t satisfactorily adjudicated, Fire Chief Mike Weege will discuss it with the board to ensure the board is aware of the dispute and remains comfortable that the chief is being open with board members and is seeking their advice and guidance.

• A board member will not interfere with or circumvent the team-

member grievance process, and board members will remember it’s Weege’s responsibility to develop the fire department’s strategic plan, and it is the board’s responsibility to accept or modify it and set direction.

According to the Censorship Policy: • Individual board members do not have board authorization to interact with staff, except for Weege, for any purpose, outside of official board meetings and district functions. Attendance by individual board members at district functions, including all division meetings outside of (the board’s) purview, requires majority board approval prior to attendance.

You know the holiday season is here when Conifer Community Church starts its Christmas lights show.

The premiere of the lights on Nov. 25 did not disappoint the people who braved the 14-degree temperature to watch the lights twinkle in time to old favorites such as “It’s the Most Wonderful Time

of the Year,” “Little Drummer Boy,” “Run Rudolph Run,” “Amazing Grace” and more.

Those in cars and those outside watching the 35-minute light show were mesmerized by the 150,000 blinking red, blue, green and white lights — a fun time for the entire family.

The lights for the show, now in its 12th year, are designed and installed on what is called “Christmas island” by Impact Christmas Lighting, whose owner Arman Prescott is involved at the church. The music, as always, is played over an FM radio station.

The lights will be on nightly through Jan. 6, and people can

drive in, park and watch as often and as long as they would like. The church is at 9998 S. Havekost Road in Conifer.

Bill Toews and his grandson Bryson Miller, 12, stood outside before the first premiere show started, drinking hot chocolate and standing by a fire pit to stay warm.

Toews, the chairman of the church board, called the light show a good thing and something the church can do to spread holiday spirit in the community.

Santa and Mrs. Claus were inside the church, waiting to chat with children and pass out candy canes.

Santa told Jackson DeRosia, 6, to be good for his parents, and he told

Jackson’s parents that they were blessed to have Jackson.

Outside, Sue Petersen, a selfprofessed cookie lady for the church — one of many, she added — made sure everyone had hot chocolate, apple cider and cookies to keep them warm. She volunteers every year for the premiere and said it was fun to chat with the community amid the twinkling lights.

Cindy Chadwick, whose daughter sang Christmas carols with the Conifer Chorale, said she comes to watch the lights every year.

“It puts me in the Christmas spirit,” Chadwick said. “It moves me. Who doesn’t like sparkling lights?”

A legacy of sculpture Evergreen’s Sculpture Walk continues to grow and change

Sculpture art is alive and well in Evergreen.

It’s been nearly a year since Sculpture Evergreen merged with Center for the Arts Evergreen, and the 48 permanent and 11 temporary sculptures throughout Evergreen are a testament to the efforts of volunteers throughout the years to bring public art to Evergreen.

“Sculpture Evergreen generated this enthusiasm for public art,” said Sara Miller, senior director of

exhibitions at Center for the Arts Evergreen. “From a community perspective, people don’t know the extent of the sculptures we have.

They are continually surprised about the depth and the number of sculptures in town.”

Tricia Rosenthal, who was president of Sculpture Evergreen before the merger and now serves on the CAE board, called the merger a good thing for sculpture.

“Some pretty exciting things are happening because of this merger,” she said.

The Sculpture Walk runs from downtown Evergreen to Bergen Park and includes both the permanent and the temporary sculptures, which change in June each year.

The temporary sculptures give Evergreen an opportunity to see different kinds of sculpture, Miller

said. She highlighted “Isolation” by James Payne, the huge sculpture on Meadow Drive next to Church of the Cross.

“It’s very different than anything we have ever installed,” she said.

“The Sculpture Walk is a fabulous way to honor different types of sculpture.”

Rosenthal is excited about the eight sculptures along the walkway in Bergen Park that lead to Center for the Arts Evergreen, where several sculptures have been installed.

“That area is becoming densely populated with sculptures,” Rosenthal said.

Think of the award as the best in show for the temporary sculptures.

This year’s recipient was Sean Yarbrough for his sculpture “Sun Shadow, Moon Light,” which was in the Sculpture Walk in 2022. It stood at the Lake Point Center.

Sternberg was instrumental in starting Art for the Mountain Community, the precursor to Sculpture Evergreen, and the bestin-show award is given by a local artist asked to jury the temporary pieces.

approved by the board, is unauthorized and is not condoned by the board of directors. The board’s legal counsel has determined that conduct not condoned by the board or outside the scope of board member duties exposes them to potential personal liability, which will not be reimbursed or indemnified by the district.

Board comments

Board member Julie Ann Courim said at the Nov. 21 meeting that having board members at meetings outside the board’s purview could be a distraction.

“We don’t want to impact meetings that we shouldn’t be impacting,” Courim said. “We also don’t want to take away our ability to govern objectively.”

Ballinger said at a Nov. 17 board meeting that her purpose in creating the statement was twofold: to get forward momentum in developing a cohesive team of board members and to reiterate the expectation of conduct of all members of the fire department.

“This reiterates our standards and how things are going to go moving forward,” she said.

Board member Evan Jeffries said board members, since they are elected to serve on the EFR board, should be held to a higher standard. “(This statement) will accomplish what we want … showing the entire department what we stand for and what we look to accomplish and how,” Jeffries said. “We can … look forward to the future by conducting ourselves in a manner worthy of the community where we live and serve.”

Ballinger said, in addition, releasing Glesne’s memo provides context and shows the purpose and strength behind the board statement, and it explains the ramifications when board members don’t act appropriately.

“Should other members of the department come to us with grievances, we have a public document that says this is not in our purview as a board member,” Jeffries said.

Ballinger added: “This statement gives us the ability to hold everybody else to the same standard if we ourselves are willing to do this and go from there.”

Attorney opinion

According to a four-page memo from Glesne that the board made public, Glesne wrote in part: “We have been made aware of more than one incident of open and obvious disclosure of information by a director to persons

outside of Executive Session related to personnel matters discussed solely in Executive Session. We have also been advised of a personnel complaint of a director attempting to influence administrative matters and district personnel decisions.

“An individual director has also repeatedly discussed operations with members of the volunteers without board direction to do so, and … used such discussions to attempt to influence a paid member of EFR to change a personnel decision made by Chief Weege. … This effort was based solely upon the alleged objections of one or two members of the organization whose position in the department is far lower in the Organizational Chart. In summary, the operational boundaries have clearly been ignored, and have now led to more than one complaint about director misconduct.

“In the future, for your own protection and that of the district as a whole, we highly advise against releasing confidential information without a vote of a quorum of the directors.

Further, we advise directors to adhere to their duties of loyalty to the district as a whole, and to not attempt to influence members of the organization in support of, or opposition against, any individual point of view or perspective which is not directed by the board as a whole.”

temporary sculptures.

For example, a virtual map is available to guide visitors to the different sculptures and provide information about them and their creators. Rosenthal called the new map, with QR codes, a step forward for the sculpture program because people can get access more easily to the information.

In addition, CAE has created a sculpture scavenger hunt to help youngsters and adults appreciate the finer things about different sculptures.

CAE wants to start an adopta-sculpture program, similar to an adopt-a-highway program, looking for people to take care of the landscaping around the sculptures, Miller said. Sculptures

are located in parks, roundabouts, at businesses and more, and it’s important that the grass is cut or the weeds are pulled, Miller said.

“Since we don’t own property where the sculptures are placed, we are trying to come up with a strategy to maintain and even improve the sites,” Rosenthal said.

Rosenthal is excited that Center for the Arts Evergreen hopes to have a sculpture exhibit to coincide with the new sculpture installation in 2024.

“I hope we can do that going forward each year,” Rosenthal said. “It’s exciting because there hasn’t really been a sculpture-only exhibit at CAE … and that proclaims the CAE organization’s commitment to sculpture.”

uides in the outdoor industry inevitably come up with collective nicknames for customers. On horseback they’re “dudes,” on the river they’re “mers” — short for customers — and they’re “sticks” if you’re trying to trick a trout. Sometimes the terms trend a little negative — “flatlander” comes to mind, and there’s another name I’ve come to use but need to explain it.

It comes out of what I do: For the last decade, I’ve guided multi-day whitewater fly-fishing trips through western Colorado’s Gunnison Gorge during the summer. Then I spend the fall guiding horseback hunting outfits in wilderness. It adds up to around 100 nights a year sleeping rough.

I’ve met a lot of people from all over the country, and, sad to say, too many seem oblivious to how scarce clean water is in the outback and also how much work it takes to make water safe for drinking. That’s why I sometimes call them “water poopers.”

Spill a big batch of filtered water, treat a horse like a car rather than a living being, or behave in some other entitled way, and you might get saddled with this moniker. If a client takes offense, I explain that

necessary to life, and they usually agree: “Yep, that’s me. Never thought about it that way.”

On the river, and in hunting camp, water is precious: We filter every drop Jacob Richards of water that we drink. We haul the water from the river or the creek to camp and then let gravity filters purify it, one drop at a time.

On overnight river trips we use a portable toilet setup with a great view, but some clients never get over their distaste of having to use it. At trip’s end, our portable toilet gets packed out, leaving nothing behind.

On the mountain every fall, we usually have to dig two 5-footdeep outhouse holes at least 40 paces from the main tents. After a stalagmite of poop and toilet paper inevitably forms, the “camp-jack” has the unlucky job of knocking over the tower. We fill in the hole when it’s three-quarters full and then dig a new one.

Wilderness guides love saying

things like “misery makes memories,” or “embrace the suck.”

It’s good for a laugh when rain, mud or a sudden freeze moves in, but it helps make living deep in the wilderness an experience to learn from and remember. It also breaks the water-pooper spell we fall into in the “real world.” Being responsible for our personal needs connects us to the realities of life that modern civilization hides.

Our elk camp is located in an aspen forest licking down into Gambel oak brush, and every year I notice that the land is drier and hotter. Aspens are not doing well. The mature trees are dead or dying and only saplings seem to have any vigor. A little creek used to run cool enough to hold some fingerling trout, but vegetation is moving higher up the mountain and the creek is warm.

The elk rut also happens later in the fall each year.

At some point every season after six weeks in the wild, I drive home, and as I crest the ridge and see the lights of Grand Junction, it hits me: Some 150,000-plus people live in the area, and they all defecate in purified water without a second thought.

For those first few days back in civilization, the absurdity is

overwhelming. But I also can see the bigger picture of our careless lives. Living in a wild place separates us from what is essential: Shelter. Energy. Food. Clean water.

Waste removal. We’re forced to take individual responsibility for all of those things in the backcountry.

Of course, I’m a water-pooper, too.

No one is immune. No matter how you wipe it, we all clean ourselves with dead trees, even protestors sitting in old growth forests.

I might just be a river rat and mule skinner, but I know that many of our most pressing environmental and social issues stem from this waterpooper line of thinking.

Stepping out of the system to take responsibility for ourselves, even for a few days in the wild, can be eyeopening. It’s amazing to realize how fragile our luxuries are, from toilets that whisk waste away to having clean water pour out of a tap.

It is unwise to take these luxuries for granted.

Miners Alley triples down on holiday theater for 2023

he holidays have always been a special time at Golden’s Miners Alley Playhouse.

Typically, an offering for children and one that adults can enjoy means the theater has made a name for itself as one of the goto places to get a healthy dose of seasonal cheer.

With light and love, upon the last moon of autumn, I share with the universe the passing of my mother, Tildy Claire Daroca. This spicy and charismatic woman was born on the 5th of November, 1947 on the lower east side of New York City and left this earth on the thunderous Colorado evening of July 31, 2023.

She was a true spirit-lifter full of passion, respect, honesty and truth. As her close circle knows, she laughed until she cried – finding humor and light in almost anything. Living in Evergreen for 42 years, her work as a therapist was dedicated to lending an ear and reflecting with a compassionate voice.

Ever curious to learn and grow, she earned multiple degrees and impacted many lives over seven decades as a Montessori teacher, trusted friend and a mentor. In addition, she

possessed a love of art and all things sensory, and she dearly cherished serving as a docent at the Denver Art Museum.

Always in our hearts and bones, she’s remembered as an orchid dancing in the moonlight with a head full of dreams, forever young, always on fire, a golden rose shining upon crazy diamonds, a little wing riding the wind.

Steven Daniel Erlander, (53) passed away after a 17-month battle with Melanoma on November 10, 2023, his wife Renee and his faithful companion Obie were by his side.

doing something. He even took a few flying lessons, which was a huge thrill for him. We had many off-road adventures in Moab, with his cousin Tom & Jeanie Ulven. Those were some of his favorite memories as a family.

Steve was born on November 26, 1969, in Duluth, Minnesota to Ron and Carrie Erlander. Steve grew up with his sister Shelly in Twig, Minnesota. After graduating from Proctor High School in 1988, he enlisted in the Army National Guard. He then attended Duluth Technical College and earned his degree for a Residential Electrician.

Steve’s love for remodeling was instilled at an early age as his parents built a home in Twig, Minnesota. It was here that he found his love for dirt bikes and working on cars with his Dad. After Steve and Renee bought their mountain home in Evergreen, they spent many years remodeling it. He could fix or build anything. His last reno project was the RV. Unfortunately, we didn’t get it done soon enough for us to hit the road. Florida was on his horizon; warmer days were ahead.

Steve had big plans in store for us, until cancer ripped it all away…

Steve and Renee married in 1992 and started their life together in Duluth, Mn. In 1994, they headed west and moved to Colorado. For the last 28 years they have lived in Evergreen, where they raised their sons, Tyler, and Tanner.

Steve worked as an electrician after moving to Colorado and quickly got his Master’s license. He started his own business in 2003, Maximum Electric. He was dedicated to doing his very best, he did the job right the first time, and taught his employees to take a step back and work through the problem.

He liked the challenge of remodeling, using his years of experience to figure it out like a pro. Many of his colleagues called him an electrical genius.

Steve loved to ride his bike, he had many different “rides” over the years, he even had plans to start a blog about them. He treasured spending weekends at the lake with family, boating, paddleboarding, kayaking, wake surfing and chilling out by the campfire. He enjoyed golfing with our youngest son Tanner, and mountain biking with our oldest son Tyler. He liked to go skiing as a family until he decided it was too cold. Steve never sat still, he always had to be

Steve is survived by his wife of 31 years, Renee, his sons Tyler (25) and Tanner (20), his parents Ron and Carrie Erlander, his sister Shelly Erlander (Grant) HuBert, cousins, aunts, uncle, niece, nephews, extended family in Minnesota and his fourlegged companions, Woofy and Obie.

Steve was a private guy, but extremely generous, loyal, clever and he fiercely loved his family. He will be missed always and forever…

Board games are rising in popularity, and local shop owners say the games mean a lot to people

hen game shop owners throughout the metro area talk about the reasons they got into the business, they all use the same word: Community.

Games stores are more than just a center for play or a place to buy games. They serve as social hubs, something shop owners say is increasingly hard to find and ever more valued in today’s society.

While church attendance continues to plummet, politics becomes ever more divisive, and tech devices are a growing part of our daily lives, the human need for physical connection remains. Sitting across a table from others and playing games, while temporarily setting aside worries that today often range from personal to global, is one way to fill that void.

“It really fosters an alternative for people who are not interested in religion or some other types of traditional community. And ours is a lot more welcoming in ways, too,” said Shannon Mills, who co-owns Littleton’s Mythic Games with her husband Mike Agnew. “We know everybody here, and we’re all here for the same kinds of reasons.”

In fact, a recently opened Thornton game shop took its name from that philosophy.

“We were kicking around what to call it, and a friend said, ‘Call yourself what you’re trying to do. You’re trying to build a community, to do good,’” said Jessica Willman, co-owner of Thornton’s Do Gooder Games.

“Gaming is almost entirely about the community aspect,” said Jeff Kokx, co-owner of Enchanted Grounds, which has stores in both Highlands Ranch and Littleton. “I don’t think any game store owner is actually in it to make a mint. I think we do it because we enjoy it. We like the people that come in. We like community.”

Whatever the reason, board gaming is hot. In fact, the Washington Post recently described now as the golden age of board games, and there are no signs of its slowing. The global board games market is expected to double

in the next several years, growing from about $13 billion in 2023 to $26 billion by 2030.

Board games promote sportsmanship, family, teamwork and competitiveness, and studies show they increase self-confidence.

For kids who today spend hours each day interacting with technology, playing board games gives them time away from the screen, directly interacting with others.

“I think the value of in-person communication and collaboration is

very important,” said Gabby Mann, who co-owns the Golden Game Guild with her husband Ryun Valdez.

“Hopefully that doesn’t get lost in this wild world we live in now. I’m glad we have opportunities for that here, especially for kids.”

“Our society is losing places to meet in person,” Valdez said. “There needs to be places besides just bars, especially for families, where people can go.”

Having a sense of community is also key to a successful game store’s business model.

“Building community is building value,” Do Gooder Games’ partner Dan William said. “Once you’ve built the community, then revenue follows.”

Mythic Games’ Agnew agrees. With ever-growing competition from other game shops and online shopping, brick-and-mortar stores have to distinguish themselves.

“We never want to win customers on having the lowest prices,” he said.

“That generates a very cheap and temporary loyalty. They’re not loyal to you; they’re loyal to the price.

“There’s no competing with Amazon,” his wife Shannon said. “So we have to provide interest in different ways. We keep our space super clean, fun and open, and are always adding different events. It’s all about bringing people together.”

Pandemic and game innovation fuels growth

The game shop formula is a winning one, particularly in recent years — a fact business analysts attribute to increased innovation in board game creation and the rise of game shops.

The pandemic likely helped fuel that growth, as many people not only rediscovered board games while in lockdown but emerged from months of isolation craving social interaction and mental stimulation.

“In the end, I think COVID(-19) was good for business,” Shannon Mills said. “People were so starved for human interaction. You can only play so many video games before you want to see somebody face-to-face.”

board players were born between 1997 and 2012, and forecasts suggest they’ll continue to be the industry’s most significant consumers. But it’s kids who dominate the industry.

Players aged 5 to 12 are the global market’s biggest consumers.

To meet all that demand, the industry produces more than 3,000 new games each year. And for those who haven’t played in a while, they’ve come a long way from Battleship and Aggravation. On today’s board game menu, there is literally something for everyone.

“People will come in and say, ‘I don’t like games,’” said Mann, of Golden Game Guild. And we say, ‘You haven’t played the right game yet.’”

Consider games like Wingspan, a card-based game about birds. Using hand-painted cards, players control a piece of land, on which they’re tasked with populating a bird preserve.

Many describe playing Wingspan as a soothing, Zen-like experience.

It’s clearly struck a chord. Since its 2019 release, Wingspan has sold 1.7 million copies and won numerous awards.

Or Pandemic, a game in which plays are disease-fighting specialists battling the spread of several global plagues. Each player has a unique role, and must strategize, racing the clock with their fellow players to

conquer the diseases. This highly rated, award-winning game is not simple, but players love it for both its complexity and emphasis on teamwork.

The tabletop role playing game Dungeons & Dragons, once a niche and secretive pastime played in basements and private rooms, is a feature act at almost any modern game shop. Almost all set aside one night for D&D, which often draws complete strangers together to craft their own fictional characters, worlds, and adventures. Created in the 1970s, the game is today at an all-time popularity peak.

Fans also flock to game shops to play “Magic: The Gathering,” the oldest known trading card game. It casts players as wizards who get their powers from a universe of cards that are bought, sold and traded.

And among the younger set, Pokémon trading cards remain a strong seller.

Boosting the industry, celebrities are onboard with D&D and other games.

“The stigma that once surrounded D&D has been removed,” Kokx said.

“There are people who are very much in the limelight that play this D&D publicly — Vin Diesel, Jason Momoa, Joe Manganiello, Wil Wheaton … many have created podcasts and YouTube channels to promote the

game.

“A lot of that is because our generation grew up with these games in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Now we’re older with disposable income, and introducing our kids to it. And it’s significantly more accepted.”

In an effort to accommodate the growing interest in in-person gaming and the vast library of available games, shops are growing. Enchanted Grounds opened a second location.

Mythic recently expanded to a whopping 6,300 square feet, giving them more space for games but more pockets within the store in which groups can play specific games together.

And while many game shops cater specifically to the gaming community, offering sandwiches, snacks, soda, tea, and even limited alcohol sales, they’ve also broadened their focus to draw more customers.

Do Gooder Games and Enchanted Grounds specialize in high-end, local coffee, and Do Gooder Games sells sandwiches, even drawing employees from local businesses for lunch. That’s not just good for the customer base, it’s almost vital for gamers.

“Some of these games take 4-6 hours to play,” said Do Gooder’s Jessica Willman. “Sitting down and playing a six-hour game without any food or breaks is hard.”

With its emphasis on quality coffee, Enchanted Grounds draws a broad range of customers. A Navy veterans group regularly meets there to talk and drink coffee. Women’s groups gather for mahjong and canasta.

Remote workers in neighboring homes and apartments stop by to work for a few hours. All are part of the game shop community.

Do Gooder Games includes a room that can be used to record podcasts, space for community meetings and an employee who teaches newcomers to the business how to play games.

“Success to me will be defined by who successful the community is a the end of the day,” Dan Willman said. “We are thinking how to work with our community, and also how to help but also disrupt the industry.

To break down the barriers and the stereotypes of (game shop customers) being white and male-dominated, you need to cater to new people.”

And just maybe, those new customers will find a game they love.

“There’s a game for everybody, and it’s almost never Monopoly,” Mythic Games’ Shannon Mills said. “Gaming is like a walk-in closet; it’s way bigger than you thought it would be.”

Playing with O. Henry’s work Evergreen Players will perform a new play with seeds in his ‘An Unfinished Christmas Story’

It’s not often that Evergreen playwrights collaborate with a distinguished author.

But that’s what three Evergreen Players playwrights did — they created a play with O. Henry. How can that be, you ask, considering

Chalk the feat up to Kathleen Davis, Scott Gibson and Marilyn Herrs. They finished O. Henry’s “An Unfinished Christmas Story,” and Evergreen Players will premiere the new play called “The Gift of Fools” Dec. 15-17 along with O’Henry’s famous “The Gift of the Magi.”

“An Unfinished Christmas Story” isn’t really a story. Instead, it’s a scene with a couple of characters.

Davis convinced Gibson and Herrs that they could finish the unfinished O. Henry’s story to dovetail with “The Gift of the Magi.”

At first, Gibson was not so sure.

“When I read (“An Unfinished Christmas Story”), I thought, ‘Kathleen has taken leave of her senses,’” Gibson said. “Then I started thinking, what if? We had a blank slate. There were two characters and no story. We can make this experience an adventure and see if we can come up with some building blocks.”

The Evergreen playwrights are pleased with the results and hope the community will see both plays. These heartwarming, family comedies will be performed at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Dec. 15 and 16, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. SEE PLAYERS, P18

It all began when Davis wanted to find a second short holiday play to feature along with “The Gift of the Magi.”

“We were trying to find alternative Christmas plays that were short,” Davis said. “We said, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if there was another O. Henry story we could perform?”

She did not have to dig through dusty books or boxes or in dingy attics. Instead, she started searching online for plays that might fit the bill, which is where she found “An Unfinished Christmas Story.”

The three met over dinner and started kicking around characters to add to O. Henry’s cranky rooming house landlady and a young man who works in a photography supply shop. Maybe a young widowed mother, who takes in mending, and an older gentleman, they thought.

“It was so unfinished, and it was kind of like (O. Henry) was doing free association because it didn’t even hold together as the beginning of a plot,” Davis said, explaining that the Evergreen playwrights had a blank canvas on which to create the play.

“It began to take shape,” Gibson said. “Once we had a rough draft that we liked, I took our ideas and put them together into a script.”

The finished script went to Evergreen Players’ Thursday Night Random Readers — a group of actors who read through plays — and the show met with their approval. Of the nine actors in the play, five are characters and four are narrators, with all nine interacting in the play.

Davis found the final cast members, many of whom also are in “The Gift of the Magi,” and the rest will be history on Dec. 15.

A subsequent search has not found another adaptation or continuation of O. Henry’s unfinished story, so the Evergreen playwrights believe they are the first to complete it. In fact, they are considering providing it to other Colorado theater groups.

Actors said they couldn’t tell the characters created by the Evergreen playwrights from O. Henry’s characters, and the structure of “The Gift of Fools” was interesting because of the interplay between the narrators and characters.

Actor Nya Pruitt said each character was different and perfect for the show, which leaves the audience asking a question by the end.

The Evergreen girls swim and dive team is streamlining toward a strong season, but the real question is whether the girls will win the 3A state championship for the sixth time in a row.

“It’s definitely too early to say, but we have a strong chance,” head coach Steve Schneiter said.

The Cougars kept several of their top swimmers this year, Schneiter said, and five out of Evergreen’s seven seniors are ranked in the top 100 swimmers in the state by swimcloud.com. Senior Finley Anderson is considered the third top swimmer, he added.

The swimmers and divers took second overall in their first meet of the season against Littleton, Golden and Lakewood on Nov. 28.

Schneiter told the team in an email: “We had some great swims for this point of the season, a number of state qualification times, and some swimmers competed in their first relays ever. Great start for everyone!”

Schneiter, in his second year as

the swimmers’ head coach, said the team is a bit larger than last year with 40 swimmers. Another big change is the girls diving team, which has nine divers, the largest team it has fielded in several years.

Schneiter attributes the bigger dive team to coach Brett Brinkhoff, who has worked to improve the program, and to gymnasts wanting to try something different such as diving.

He said Evergreen’s swimming success stemmed from the Hurricanes club swim team based at the Wulf Recreation Center, plus the swim clubs at Hiwan Golf Club and Mount Vernon Canyon Club.

They provide a way for young girls

to get involved in swimming and a pipeline to the high school team.

“Once you get them in, you have a good chance of turning them into strong swimmers in high school and beyond,” Schneiter said.

He added that practicing at Evergreen’s elevation didn’t hurt either because it gives swimmers a competitive edge.

The coach is not sure whether the girls will rival the Evergreen girls volleyball team’s feat of winning nine state championships in a row in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The teams were under the leadership of head coach Lo Hunter. But it’s definitely a goal.

The Board of Trustees of the Town of Morrison will hold a Public Hearing for the purpose of receiving public comment on an amendment to the 2023 Budget. The Hearing will be held on Tuesday, December 19, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. The 2023 Amended Budget is available to the public for inspection at the Town of Morrison Website, www.town.morrison.co.us. Upon TST’s receipt of email requesting Project Documents, the Prospective Proposers will be added to the plan holders list and emailed instructions to download Project Information and Proposal Documents.

Two-Step Selection Process Selection of the Construction Manager/General Contractor will be made using a two-step process. Step One: Owner will receive Statements of Qualification and evaluate these, along with other information, to develop a list of the most highly qualified Proposers. Selection criteria and scoring included in the Request for Qualifications.

The District Board of Directors anticipates meeting January 17, 2024 during which the Board will consider a short list of one or more, but no more than five, qualified firms which the District believes to be the most qualified pursuant C.R.S. Section 32-1-1805(2). Step Two: The short list selections will receive a Request for Proposal and will submit a detailed Proposal for the CM/ GC Contract for the Owner’s consideration. The Owner, at its discretion, may elect to conduct Interviews after receiving Proposals. Points previously awarded during step one and step two of the selection process may be adjusted based on information obtained during the Interview. Selection criteria and scoring included in the Request for Qualifications will be used to determine the final rankings of Proposers for award of the CM/ GC Contract. The Owner will evaluate these rankings, along with other information, to select the most highly qualified Proposer.
