The foothills’ annual Alternative Gift Fair provides fun ideas for the holidays BY DEB HURLEY BROBST DBROBST@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

The Alternative Gift Fair is a yearly excursion for Ellyn Ito. Ito, a former Colorado resident, returns to Evergreen each year from the East Coast to have a table for her nonprofit, Seeds to Sew International, at the fair. Ito said there was nothing like the Alternative Gift Fair with friendly volunteers and shoppers, plus the nonprofit sold a lot of items to help women in Kenya. Ito stood behind a table on Nov. 12 at the fair at Evergreen Lutheran Church, wearing a chef’s hat and demonstrating how the Christmas bags made in Kenya work. She said the idea started when her husband wrapped gifts by putting them in pil-

lowcases, saying it was better for the planet. The next year, Ito’s family created Christmas bags rather than using wrapping paper, tape and bows. That notion morphed into a nonprofit started in 2011 that teaches Kenyan women to sew simple bags that Seeds to Sew sells for them. The SEE GIFT FAIR, P3

women learn to sew more complex items through the nonprofit with the goal of helping them be self-sufficient and active participants in their communities, Ito said. The seamstress signs each bag, Ito explained to shoppers at the fair. Seeds to Sew was one of more than 30 local and regional nonprofit vendors at the fair. In its 23rd year, the fair is an annual shopping tradition in the foothills, and its slogan is “Shop once. Gift twice” since the nonprofits get all of the money from selling items to help their cause. Many of the volunteers come from the sponsoring churches: Evergreen Lutheran, United Methodist

Beijos Brasil, another nonprofit featured at the Alternative Gift Fair, sells artisan-created jewelry made from grass. The grass dries to a golden color, according to Lynn Smith, a volunteer for the organization. The jewelry is lightweight and is purchased from the artisans to help them make a living, Smith said. Elisa Kohli and Meghan Buckwalter explained the nonprofit Kenya’s Kids to shoppers. The nonprofit operates a home for 30 children, supporting them and their families. The nonprofit buys bead animals created by widows living in Kenya, providing the widows with income. Then the nonprofit sells the crafts, using the money for the school. “We are in a very rural, tribal area,” Kohli said. “There are a lot of kids with nowhere to go.”

Rocky Mountain Academy of Evergreen fifth graders host veterans brunch The principal at Rocky Mountain Academy of Evergreen felt like a proud parent as she watched fifth graders commemorating Veterans Day. The students organized and hosted a brunch for veterans, most of whom were connected to students at the school. Principal Ann Hudson was pleased that students spent time really listening to what the veterans had to say. “My kids, my teachers, our veterans,” Hudson said as she surveyed the school’s cafeteria where each table had several veterans and students. “They are genuinely interacting. This fills my heart.” Fifth-grade teacher Kelly Walker explained that the students wanted to plan a service project that in-

The veterans were from all branches of the military, some serving in war, others serving at other times. Students made signs and cards saying things like, “You are my hero for your bravery and sacrifices to our naScan for more information

Camilla Park were tasked with welcoming the veterans to the brunch. “We wanted to thank the veterans for coming,” Keely explained. “They have done everything. Without them, we wouldn’t be here.” Camilla added that the veterans were willing to sacrifice themselves for the country. “It’s a debt we can never repay,” she said, noting they were great examples of the Core Virtues the school embodies including respect, responsibility, self-discipline, courage, love of country and faithfulness. Veterans from each branch of the military stood to applause during the brunch. Pete Boldrin, a Vietnam-era veteran and grandfather of some RMAE students, was pleased with the breakfast and the respect the students showed him and other veterans. “This is the best group of kids,” he said. “I’ve never seen a more beautiful bunch of kids.”

Devin said he was grateful that the fifth graders organized the brunch, especially their effort to host several older veterans. “I’m glad they still do these things,” Devin said, noting that his participation in similar events as a young student helped motivate him to join the military. Charlotte Wesling and her husband Mark, who served in the Navy, attended the breakfast. MORRISON BRIEFS BY DEB HURLEY BROBST DBROBST@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Due diligence period extended for pot shop in Morrison

A cannabis company will have until Feb. 6 to complete its due diligence to determine the feasibility of putting a marijuana shop in Morrison. This is the sixth time town officials have extended the due diligence period, giving LivWell, one of the largest cannabis operations in the nation, more than a year to determine if it wants to build a shop on Town of Morrison-owned land. Morrison trustees approved the extension at their Nov. 7 meeting. “This is a complicated deal,” Town Manager Kara Winters explained. “It’s taking them a long time to determine whether this is feasible.” LivWell wants to put the shop on a one-acre property owned by the

town behind the wastewater treatment plant on the northeast corner of C-470 and Morrison Road. In August, the Town Board of Trustees approved rezoning the property to allow the shop. On Dec. 20, 2022, the board voted to allow LivWell to construct the store, and since then, LivWell has asked for extensions for its due diligence. Trustees have asked to meet with LivWell representatives to get an update on the company’s progress to open the shop. LivWell can still back out of the deal. Assuming LivWell moves forward, it would be responsible for building the store, the parking lot and the access road from the store to Morrison Road, and it would pay the town $15,000 a month to rent the property plus providing sales tax revenue. In the meantime, LivWell is paying the town $7,500 a month during its due diligence period, Winters said.

Asking for quiet

Residents who live in the Willow Springs subdivisions have asked Morrison trustees to find ways to quiet trucks moving from Highway 8 onto U.S. 285. They told the Morrison trustees on Nov. 7 that the semis coming out of the quarry on Highway 8 use jake brakes, which are noisy and disruptive. Greg Sargowicki, the owner of Willow Ridge Manor on Highway 8, said it was difficult to host meetings at the location during the day because of the noise. Resident Frankie Hood, who played a recording of the truck sounds she hears from her house, asked the trustees to consider extending its noise ordinance south of the town or to lower the speed limit so truck drivers would use their brakes less. She noted that the ramps onto

area highways seem to be regularly blocked when trucks driving too fast tip over. Mayor Chris Wolfe said town officials hear the residents’ concerns, and they would meet with the Willow Springs residents to discuss potential solutions. Sidewalk on Highway 8, Spring Street bridge

Morrison trustees discussed two projects at their Nov. 7 meeting: creating a path or sidewalk on the west side of Highway 8 between Canyon Vista and Red Rocks Vista drives and replacing the Spring Street bridge. Neither project is listed in the capital improvement projects planned for 2024. Engineer Jim Gill, who volunteered to look at the two projects for the town, said several options were SEE MORRISON, P7

available for the sidewalk and path, each with challenges. A sidewalk is important because families can walk from home to Red Rocks Elementary School, and people can use the walkway to get to the Mount Falcon Park trailhead. Gill said the easiest would be to pave the shoulder for about 10 feet and stripe it, but trustees voiced concern about potential safety issues. He said another possibility would be to put a curb and gutter along the west side of Highway 8 and then install a six-foot wide sidewalk. Both of these options would require approval from the Colorado Department of Transportation. If the town wanted to put a walkway on the other side of the ditch, that would entail adding retaining walls, which would be expensive, or the town could put in a culvert and fill in the ditch, putting a walkway there. Trustees wanted to continue to look at options, costs and which options might get CDOT approval. Gill also looked at the Spring Street bridge, which the town has talked about replacing for several years. He said it would cost less to repair it than originally expected. The bridge is made of wooden beams and a 4-inch wooden deck with 7 inches of asphalt over it. He said one beam that is failing must be replaced, and new deck and side rails should be replaced, estimating the town would get another 25 years out of it. He estimated the materials would cost about $30,000. Board member Johnny Leonard called Gill’s plan a great solution. Gill said it would take about a week to do the work, and once the decking had

been ripped out, the residents living east of the bridge would need to make preparations because they wouldn’t be able to drive to their houses. Police force to continue at same level

Morrison will not be funding a 24/7 police force in 2024. Hiring additional officers would be too expensive, so the town will continue to have its officers on duty for 20 hours a day, except between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. when the Jeffco Sheriff’s Office provides law enforcement. Police Chief Bill Vinelli had told trustees last month that crime happens during those hours, and Jeffco sheriff’s deputies respond, but they have competing incidents. The police department’s budget is projected to be about 40% of the town’s total 2024 budget, which is about $1.48

million of the total $3.63 million budget, and even with additional revenue projected from a speed-enforcement van and camera, ticket revenues are projected to be $400,000 less than the police budget. Trustee Johnny Leonard said he would like town officials to meet with community members in 2024 to talk about the police department, and whether it was important for town residents. The town has about 300 residents, but the police force takes care of tourists and the crime that comes with it. Some residents have said the town didn’t need its own police force. “We need to educate the town and determine if we need (a police force) and can afford one,” Leonard said. “The chief has done a great job of getting us to where we want to be.”

merican basketball coach Bob Knight has died. A great coach to be sure. But perhaps much of what we know about Bobby Knight comes from the one occasion on which he became so upset he slung a chair across the basketball court. He was a bombastic fellow. He was unforgiving and he sought perfection. He had a hard time accepting anything less. Many of his players credit the high standards he instilled in them for their success in life. That’s what a coach is supposed to do. I want to tell you a story I personally have knowledge of about Bobby Knight. There was a family who were somewhat unique in Indiana, because the woman had graduated from Indiana University while her husband was a Purdue guy. If you don’t know it, in Indiana such a marriage is rare. The two schools are bitter rivals and don’t have

Coach Bob Knight much good to say about one another. This couple are friends of mine. They had a son who played high school basketball. He was not a great player and was never going to earn a scholarship, but he was dedicated. As fate Columnist would have it, he got very sick, and it became obvious that he was going to need a heart transplant to survive. Somehow the information about this impending operation made its way to Bobby Knight, who at that time was the Indiana coach. This family lived in Fort Wayne, a long way from Bloomington where Bob Knight lived and coached. Bobby had been told that one of the problems with heart transplants,

JIM ROHRER

especially among younger patients, had to do with the mental anxiety of the patient. Paranoia about their own health often impedes medical progress. Upon learning the details of the upcoming operation, Bobby Knight reached out to the family and asked if he could come to visit the young man before the surgery to try to help him with his fears and give him a good mental outlook as he faced this difficult medical process. Coach Knight drove from Bloomington to Fort Wayne and spent the evening before the surgery with the young man. The surgery worked and the young man survived, but afterward, there were challenges having to do with his ability to maintain a positive outlook. Coach Knight told the family he would visit as often as possible if there was no publicity. The family aggred, and he became a frequent visitor, driving back and

forth. His incognito visits worked, and the young player recovered. There are no more loyal Bob Knight fans than this couple. I have been to their home and seen all the posters and other memorabilia. They would tell you that they believe Bobby Knight helped save their son’s life just as surely as the surgeon. I wanted to share this story with all of you so that you would get a glimpse of what a good person Bob Knight was. None of us are perfect, but somehow our imperfections get all the headlines. Wreaths Across America offers a way to thank veterans for their service after they’re gone

n December, Arvada resident Judy Teter will make the trip to the southwest end of Denver, where she ensures that wreaths will be laid to honor the service of thousands of veterans at a military cemetery. “It’s not just about laying the wreath — it’s about honoring our veterans and what they did for us,” Teter said. “There’s a proper way to lay the wreath on the headstone, and you’re also supposed to say the veteran’s name and thank them for their service. “Because a lot of the people that are buried out there don’t have family that comes out and visits them, so we’re honoring them,” Teter continued. Nearly 100 cemetery locations in Colorado will take part in a national event that pays respect to interred veterans with balsam wreaths. Volunteers like Teter across the state work to support national nonprofit Wreaths Across America ahead of National Wreaths Across America Day, occurring this year on Dec. 16, according to a news release. Teter volunteers as a coordinator for the effort to place thousands of wreaths at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, near U.S. Highway 285 and Sheridan Boulevard. Roughly 123,000 veteran graves lie at Fort Logan, according to Wreaths Across America’s website. Teter says her team’s goal is to place 20,000 wreaths there on the day of the ceremony. She works “with the cemetery administration as to what sections they want covered because we do not have enough wreaths that are sponsored to cover the whole cemetery,” Teter said. “But I have a goal to hopefully one day get all of Fort Logan covered,” Teter said.

WREATHS FROM PAGE 10

A few years ago, she found out about volunteering to place flags near headstones on Memorial Day. Through that effort, she also heard about putting out the wreaths near Christmastime, and she jumped aboard. “We wouldn’t be the United States of America with the freedoms that we have if it wasn’t for our servicemen and women,” Teter said. Supporting other families in remembering their loved ones who served is part of her team’s role. On the day of the wreath ceremony, a part of the schedule is set aside for family members who ordered a wreath for their loved one’s specific grave. “That starts at 1 p.m., so it’s a little more quiet for the families to remember, talk to their family member, whatever traditions they have,” Teter said. “Last year, there was a family who had a picnic lunch at their family member’s headstone.” Looking for help

Teter and her volunteer team work hard behind the scenes to make sure Wreaths Across America Day is a success at Fort Logan. But she’s looking for more volunteers and trying to drum up more fundraising support to pay for more wreaths and help cover the costs of the operation. She’s seeking support from businesses who may want to pitch in, too. “From what I understand, that has been a challenge for a lot of the coordinators, is trying to get companies that can donate X amount of (money) to sponsor X amount of wreaths,” Teter said. She’s also looking for a volunteer with fundraising experience in particular. “Or somebody who says, ‘Hey, I know how to (work) a forklift,’ or somebody who says, ‘I own a business or (I can provide) a forklift or pallet jack,’” Teter said. Wreaths Across America is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so donating to it is considered tax deductible, according to Teter. If you’re interested in volunteering or helping as a business, you can reach Teter at 720-329-8598 or at judy.ft.logan.waa@gmail.com.

Where your money goes

Wreaths Across America was founded to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia that began in 1992, according to a news release. The organization’s mission is carried out in part each year by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies in December at Arlington and thousands of veterans’ cemeteries and other locations in all 50 states and beyond, the release said. Local sponsorship groups registered through the national program are helping to raise the necessary sponsorships to honor service members laid to rest in participating locations. Since its founding in 2007, Wreaths Across America has partnered with thousands of local nonprofits and civic groups, according to the release. For those looking to donate, the nonprofit seeks $17 per wreath, Teter said. But the money goes a long way. Through the nonprofit’s “PayBack” program, sponsorship groups can earn $5 for every $17 veteran’s wreath sponsored to sup-

port these programs in their communities. By making a $17 sponsorship, “you are also contributing to vital programs that make a meaningful difference in the lives of veterans and their families throughout the year,” the news release stated. Some of the nonprofit’s free, year-round programs, according to the release, include: • The Mobile Education Exhibit that travels the country, visiting schools and communities, teaching “the value of our freedom” while acting as an official welcome home center for living Vietnam veterans. • Wreaths Across America Radio, which gives voice to volunteers and service members so that you can hear their stories “of courage and inspiration.” • The Wreaths Across America National Museum, which is free and open to the public. It “highlights the bravery and service of rank-and-file veterans.” • The Remembrance Tree Program, which creates a living memorial of service members giving back to other service members. You can donate to sponsor a wreath at wreathsacrossamerica. org/About/WaysToSupport. You can also select an option to “honor or remember a specific person” at tinyurl.com/WreathSpecific. “There are different ways to make sure your loved one who served gets a wreath,” Teter said. If your loved one is buried at a cemetery that doesn’t have a Wreaths Across America ceremony but you still want to order a wreath, you can have it sent to you or a family member, according to Teter. Or you can pick it up at Fort Logan at 1 p.m. Dec. 16, she said. “For people who are out of state who order them, we have a volunteer who will place them and send a picture (of the placement) to the family member,” Teter said. You can reach out to Teter at the contact information above with any questions about ordering wreaths.

SPORTS Evergreen wrestling adds a girls team

BY DEB HURLEY BROBST DBROBST@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

When Evergreen wrestling coach Luke Burrier wrestles his daughter Maggie, it’s a full-out, hard-core practice match. Coach Burrier doesn’t take it easy on Maggie, who is a freshman and member of the EHS wrestling team. Maggie has been wrestling since she was young, and the Burrier family has a wrestling room in their house. The elder Burrier said he liked coaching his own children along with the rest of the team to share his love of the sport. Evergreen has grown the girls wrestling program to the point where it has its own team, going from seven girls last year to projecting 15 female wrestlers this year. Burrier, who was last year’s wrestling coach for both boys and girls, has decided to be the head coach for the girls team, while Jake Kay, an assistant coach last year, is taking over coaching the boys team. Kay suggested there might actually be more girls than boys wrestling this year, though the team numbers will solidify by the time the first meets come around in early December. Both coaches said the wrestling techniques are the same for boys and girls, though girls have an advantage because their bodies tend to be more flexible. In addition, because the sport is new to most girls, they don’t have egos that some boys who have been wrestling for years have, Kay said. Burrier said the teams were young this year, with only a couple returning seniors. Leading Evergreen wrestling this year will be siblings Avery and Jameson Cox. Jameson, a senior, is wrestling for the third year, and he also participates in jiu-jitsu. He called wrestling great exercise and a way to handle emotions, leaving everything on the mat. He called the girl wrestlers phenomenal, and he liked working with them and pushing them to do better. Burrier said girls wrestling was growing fast in the United States. All it took was giving girls the opportunity to try the sport.

Evergreen head coach Luke Burrier with his daughter, freshman Maggie Burrier.

“The young ladies have opened our eyes,” Burrier said. “They come in with confidence and positivity.” Kay added: “They will be leaders of our team culture.” Burrier called the EHS wrestling practice room and the positive culture that has been cultivated there special. “We are looking for athletes and coaches with a good attitude,” Burrier said. “Wrestling is tough, so we need to keep the negativity and the bad attitudes out of this room.” Maggie Burrier and junior Elise Stocks are two of the female wrestlers looking to make it to state this year. For Stocks, wrestling, jiu-jitsu and boxing are ingrained in her family. She decided to go out for the team, and while friends knew about her passion for wrestling, others are surprised and interested when they learn about her chosen sport. Both girls agreed that the male and female wrestlers are like a family.

Freshman Maggie Burrier, left, and junior Elise Stocks are part of the Evergreen wrestling team. They say that all of the wrestlers on the team — girls and boys — are like family.

“Most people say that about sports, but it’s really true here,” Maggie said. They joked that it’s fun to throw the boys around in practice.

“We have stronger friendships,” Stocks said. “We are there for each other through the injuries and the highs and the lows.”

Residents voice concerns as Lariat Lodge in Evergreen continues its zoning request BY DEB HURLEY BROBST DBROBST@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Residents near the Lariat Lodge in Evergreen continue to be concerned about traffic, parking and noise as the restaurant and brewery are back on track to correct a zoning glitch. Owner Anders Ruikka began the rezoning process in 2019 after learning the outdoor seating areas including an area that allows dogs — known as the Bark Garten — weren’t zoned for commercial use. The rezoning request is going through Jefferson County’s referral process before heading to the Jefferson County Planning Commission for a recommendation. However, since it has been four years since the first community meeting in November 2019, the county asked Ruikka to host a second one. At the virtual meeting on Nov. 9 at-

tended by a dozen people, Ruikka said the restaurant had made changes to respond to neighbors’ concerns and will continue to do so, adding it was important for the restaurant to get along with its neighbors. The existing brewpub building is 5,600 square feet, which includes restaurant and bar seating, the kitchen, mechanical area, brewery area, hallways, restroom, storage and office area. The outdoor area that Ruikka wants to rezone is 4,200 square feet, which includes the patio, garden and deck seating, entryway, ramps and storage area. In total, the restaurant has seating available for 223 people, and no additions are planned to the building or outdoor seating. Traffic

A neighbor said an earlier traffic study had shown 1,200 trips on week-

ends with top speeds hitting 61 mph. Ruikka had said in 2019 and reiterated on Nov. 9 that he would pay for trafficcalming devices to slow traffic on Fireweed and Iris drives, roads neighbors called more like Bandimere Speedway than a quiet residential neighborhood. Drew Schneider with Insight Engineering, who represented Lariat Lodge at the meeting, said several factors contributed to traffic issues in the area: visitors to the Evergreen Elks Lodge and Center Stage in addition to restaurant patrons. He said the county had agreed to allow two speed bumps to be installed, but Ruikka preferred no speed bumps on Fireweed Drive because it is on an incline, and speed bumps might lead to more vehicles getting stuck on the road in inclement weather. “With speed bumps, vehicles’ suspensions will squeak and groan going over them,” Schneider said. “That could

create concern about noise, though they will slow traffic down. If we get enough opposition to speed bumps, we can look at other alternative trafficcalming measures.” Parking

Lariat Lodge has 77 parking spaces, one more than Jefferson County requires for the restaurant, and it has an agreement with neighboring Evergreen Christian Church for an additional 80 spaces. In addition, parking is available at Church of the Transfiguration. Schneider noted that Lariat Lodge had more parking spaces dedicated to the business than other restaurants in downtown Evergreen. Neighbors were concerned that Center Stage was hosting more events, especially on weekends, which would mean more traffic and more parking issues in the area.

EChO’s Mobile Food Pantry has been hard at work… A word from Dale Flanders, EChO’s Executive Director: All of us at EChO express our deep gratitude to the Rotary Club of Evergreen for their generous donation of a refrigerated truck in 2023. This invaluable gift has revolutionized our ability to transport both perishable and nonperishable food items, allowing us to offer nutritious food choices to individuals in our community who rely on our assistance. The acquisition of this truck has been a gamechanger, as it has enabled us to efficiently meet the growing demand for our services. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Rotary Club for their tremendous partnership.

Some Interesting Facts:

• Over 1,000 unique households have used the Food Pantry in 2023, including more than 20% of the households in Evergreen • EChO serves Evergreen and the surrounding rural mountain areas of Jefferson, Clear Creek, Gilpin, and Park Counties • The new truck has safely transported over 68 tons of food since it was acquired • EChO has assisted 50% more people in 2023 than 2022 and twice as many as 2021 • The Food Pantry provides food for more than 35,000 meals each month

Our club has more than 100 members from all walks of life. We like to have fun and we organize social functions throughout the year.

As well as donating the mobile food pantry refrigerated truck, our club has donated more than 700 lbs. of food over the past year.
