Sowing the seeds of peace Group plants wildflower seeds at Conifer Rotary’s Peace Park

Attendees at an event at Conifer Rotary’s Peace Park were encouraged to sling mud — literally — but in a good way.

The mud was infused with wildflower seeds, and on Nov. 4, attendees threw the mud in various locations around the Peace Park, which is behind the Aspen Park Community Center. The hope is the colorful wildflowers, aspen trees and grass will help attract pollinators to the area while providing a quiet spot for reflection.

The Rotary Club of Conifer’s Peacebuilding Committee, the Conifer Peacebuilding Club and the Aspen Park Community Center collaborated to transform this space into the Rotary of Conifer

Peace Park, which had its grand opening June 11.

Tim Berg, a Rotarian who also is a member of Operation Pollination, said planting wildflowers can have a huge impact, noting that Colorado has many ecosystems that present challenges and opportunities.

Dennis Swiftdeer Paige, who designed the Peace Park, views the space as a way to take positive action in a world where international wars and political tension leave many feeling powerless.

He told about 20 people who attended the wildflower seed planting that the Peace Park was an ongoing project, and he hoped the flowers would promote a microhabitat for bees. For the seedspreaders, it was a chance to feel the earth teeming with seeds.

“Each of us is a seed that will grow, including the seed of consciousness,” Paige said. “That will have an impact on your relationships … and on the Earth.”

ing mud, but actually, they were having more fun removing the tiny flags that marked where the seeds should be planted.

Their mom, Becky Peruti, who also planted seeds, said she brought the girls for some family fun, and an event such as this helps the girls understand how everything in the world fits together.

Suzanne Barkley, a member of the Rotary Club of Conifer, watched the planting. She called the Peace Park important because it helped with building peace.

“It’s perfect to get the wildflower seeds planted,” she said. “I stop by here on frantic days for a few moments of calm. I want this to be a place of peace and refuge.”

Preparing for the holidays: Conifer’s Holiday Boutique is the first chance to find one-of-a-kind gifts

It was time to start decking the halls despite temperatures in the 60s during the Holiday Boutique sponsored by Colorado Newcomers & Neighbors.

The 45th annual show had nearly 100 vendors selling artisan-created items of every kind, all ready to help shoppers get a start on their holiday shopping list. Thousands traversed the rows of booths in the gymnasium and cafetorium at Conifer High School.

It was apparent from the long lines at the checkout tables and from the smiling people walking out with bags of items that the boutique was its usual success.

CN&N donates event proceeds to area nonprofits and schools.

Beckie Covill was happy to talk about Brook Forest Soaps, a business she started after years of loving

handcrafted soap. Covill said she tried making soap on her own, and friends and family suggested she start selling her wares.

“It just blossomed from there,” she said. Her soaps are also available at TallGrass Spa and Sugar Jones in Bergen Park.

Amy Stadstad of Conifer makes hand-poured candles with her best friend, Becca Karns, and their business A&B Candles has taken off.

Stadstad, who is a full-time pharmacist, said they create fragrances that capture experiences and places in Colorado such as Firestone Fireplace, Golden Garden, Conifer Cranberry, Steamboat Sweet Shop and Morrison Inn Margarita.

A&B Candles offers 38 fragrances, and Stadstad said they are expanding to room and linen fragrances.

The Elk Creek, North Fork and Inter-Canyon fire departments will not be consolidating.

Voters in the Elk Creek Fire Protection District voted against consolidation with a 116-vote difference between those against and those in favor. Voters in both the InterCanyon and North Fork fire districts approved consolidation by a two-toone margin.

For consolidation to take place, a majority of voters in all three districts must approve consolidation and a tax increase to equalize property taxes and to help fund the new district.

Elk Creek has 2,919 votes or 51.01% against consolidation and 2,803 votes or 48.99% in favor.

Elk Creek voters did approve keeping a sunsetting property tax if consolidation failed, voting 61% in favor to 39% against, which means Elk Creek Fire will keep the same level of property taxes to fund the department.

Neil Whitehead III, a member of the anti-consolidation group Save Elk Creek Fire, said: “The three (fire) chiefs and the boards were way too fast and way too rigid with too little information for the public. The public understood that. That’s why they turned (consolidation) down.”

He said Save Elk Creek Fire’s goal was to seek clarity so the Elk Creek Fire District voters could sort things out.

“Clarity doesn’t necessarily mean unity, but the various pathways forward need to be sorted out,” he said.

“Then perhaps we will need another election or we can go down some other pathway.”

He said voters against consolidation were concerned about what he called “secrecy,” with no organized, detailed plan on how consolidation would take place and how money would be spent.

Next steps will need public involvement — asking for public input rather than telling the public what the fire districts want to do, Whitehead said.

“We are in a divided community about which way to go and how to do this,” Whitehead said. “I think there’s a whole lot of work to be done.”

He noted that other avenues existed for the fire departments to work together in addition to intergovernmental agreements already in place.

In a letter to the community, the Elk Creek Fire Protection District said: “While we had hoped for a different outcome, we respect and

gratitude to voters in Elk Creek Fire Protection District for the passage of ballot measure 7E, preventing the loss of 2.5 mills in the district.”

Bethany Urban, an Elk Creek paramedic who is also with Elk Creek Professional Firefighters Local 4710, called consolidation a complex issue.

“Right now, as emergency responders, we remain committed to serving our communities with the exact same dedication and care that we always have,” said Urban, who was also a member of the proconsolidation A Safer Conifer. “We are committed to finding ways to address the challenges we will face moving forward.”

Proponents of consolidation said it would be good for residents in the Elk Creek, North Fork and InterCanyon fire districts along the 285 corridor, improving response times, allowing the consolidated district to add more paid staff, and streamlining training and other aspects of emergency services.

Proponents believed the three fire districts were stronger together, and a consolidated department would be more successful as the number of calls increase, the population ages and volunteerism nationwide

have a larger voice in the county and the state to advocate for help, and the trend nationwide is for smaller fire departments to consolidate.

Opponents disagreed. They said while consolidation may be good for the Inter-Canyon and North Fork fire districts, it would dilute the emergency services that Elk Creek residents now receive while they fund about two-thirds of the new department.

They said the fire districts were using fear to get residents to vote for consolidation, and intergovernmental agreements and mutual aid among the three districts allow them to collaborate without consolidating.

They said the three fire districts were not similar in terms of culture, terrain and outlook, and because of the disparity in departments, they didn’t belong in one fire department.

King, McHugh to be sworn in after winning Clear Creek school board seats

Marcie King and Kerry Ann McHugh, who were elected to the Clear Creek School District Board of Education on Nov. 7, should be sworn in to their positions within the next few weeks.

The two must be sworn in within 10 days after the county clerk certifies the election results, interim Superintendent Mike Gass said. While the clerk has until Nov. 29 to certify the results, he hopes it will be complete in time for King and McHugh to attend the Colorado Association of School Boards conference in early December.

“Any time you get a new member on a board, it’s a new board,” Gass said.

“We want to make sure we take the time to get everyone settled and give the board the opportunity to work together. There’s a lot of work to do, and it’s exciting stuff.”

Incumbent McHugh, who has been involved in public issues and served as Georgetown’s mayor, will represent District E, which is the west end of Clear Creek County. She has been elected to her first term after being appointed to the board in June 2022.

King, a paralegal, will represent District A, which is the west end of Idaho Springs and the north part of the county. She is new to the board.

King has defeated incumbent Sandi Schuessler, and McHugh has defeated Anji Gallanos.

King received 59% of the vote compared with Schuessler’s 41%. McHugh received 58% of the vote compared with Gallanos’ 42%.

Schuessler and Gallanos worked together on their campaign, while McHugh and King worked together.

School board members serve fouryear terms.

“We are very excited,” McHugh said on Election Night. “This was a community effort. The community is saying we need change, and I’m so excited to get that happening. We know we can do the good work that needs to be done.”

Schuessler said she was proud of the time she served on the school board, especially listening and interacting with the community.

“I’m looking forward to still being involved in my community,” Schuessler said. “The journey has been an adventure. I am still going to be active in the community, and I hope to have a voice at the table.”

McHugh and King said they believe the school board did not act responsibly in working with Idaho Springs as it made the decision to move the bus barn from its present location to the track south of Building 103, which is being transitioned into a new elementary school. The issue was resolved earlier this month.

Schuessler and Gallanos said the school board made solid decisions and subsequent issues with Idaho Springs have been resolved.

McHugh said in her candidate questionnaire responses that she ran for the board because Clear Creek’s future hung in the balance, and the direction voters chose would shape the educational journey for students. She said the board missed or blocked vital opportunities for improvement, and the election could change the board’s balance, allowing the momentum to implement the changes the community deserves.

King said in her candidate questionnaire responses that she hoped to change the balance of power on the board and improve the trajectory to benefit children and build a stronger foundation of education in Clear Creek. She said the board had been overspending on bond projects, didn’t explore alternatives to curb the overspending and didn’t listen to community voices.

Schuessler said in her candidate questionnaire that she was running for reelection because students, teachers and schools need strong leadership to continue moving forward. With a new interim superintendent, it is critical to continue the district’s successful momentum.

Gallanos said in her candidate questionnaire responses that she ran for the board because her experience as an educational leader and her interest in ensuring students have what they need to be successful. She said she was dedicated to ensuring quality classroom experiences for all children.

Candidates Michelle Applegate and Erin Kenworthy have won two open school board seats by 58.41% and 42.15%, according to unofficial election results. With 99.2% of the ballots of the county’s ballots counted, it’s unlikely either candidate could lose their lead.

enjoy watching “Valley of the Dolls,” a movie based on the novel

by Jaqueline Susann. The flick, in my estimation, is a bit campy, but I find the storyline and B-grade acting captivating. One scene in particular in which Neely O’Hara (Patty Duke) and Helen Lawson (Susan Hayward) get into a tussle in a ladies restroom room has stayed with me. After yanking off Helen’s wig, Neely tries to flush it down a commode. Helen is understandably enraged. Her now-visible chopped gray hair is most unbecoming. The attendant informs her that she can sneak out a back door, but Helen will have none of that. She looks into the mirror, pulls her wrap around her shoulders, and declares, “I’ll go out the same way I came in.”

Helen is not an admirable character. She has a high opinion — perhaps rightly — of her talents. She is selfconfident and self-assured but also arrogant and demanding, often treating others condescendingly. Helen, though, operates under no illusions.

She has a hard-nosed understanding about the demands of the theater and understands that glory and fame are fleeting. Still, she’s not devoid of empathy. She sees Neely for what she is: a talented, up-and-coming per-

Nonetheless, she sees Neely as a threat to her stardom. In the avian universe, Helen is an osprey not about to let a titmouse like Neely upstage and shame Columnist her. Shorn of her wig, Helen is, nevertheless, not stripped of her dignity. She holds her head up confidently as she strides out to her waiting fans.

The root of dignity is dignitas, the Latin word meaning one’s worthiness in the context of their esteem and bearing and of their reputational prestige and merit. Dignity is generally considered an admirable trait. But maintaining one’s dignity is oftentimes not an easy thing to do. It can require, as the Brits are fond to say, keeping a stiff upper lip. But behind that stiff lip, a sea of fears, anxieties and frustrations could be roiling.

The great Russian writer, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, is purported to have said, “There is only one thing that I dread: not to be worthy of my suffer-

ing.”

In Dostoyevsky parlance that means the manner in which one bears their suffering is a matter of personal dignity. Thus, when confronted with a challenging situation or times, we each face a choice. One response is to bemoan your plight by projecting a self-pitying, I’m-a-victim demeanor.

Another is to hold your head up and carry on in a dignified way.

In “Man’s Search for Meaning,” Viktor Frankl, writing in reference to the inordinate suffering and dehumanization prisoners in the concentration camps endured, said that to survive, the prisoners, even though they were shorn of nearly every element of personal dignity, still had to choose. He averred that they needed to stop trying to figure out the meaning of life — thus the reason for their suffering — and instead to think of themselves as being challenged by life every minute of every day. He asserted it was not through talk or meditation — and presumably prayer — that they would find answers but in right action and conduct.

Frankl’s prescription echoes two directives in Buddhism’s Eightfold Path — Right Speech and Right Action — and has meaning for everyone. For me that means how one responds to

crises is the true measure of a person.

A person with nobility doesn’t whine but instead faces them with class: with dignitas.

Each of us is an algorithm of our life experiences combined with our natural talents, skills, traits, and choices made, healthy as well as poor ones.

That complex matrix is the sum of our individual humanness.

Frankl cited a line from an unnamed poet who wrote, “What you have experienced, no power on earth can take from you.” Anyone who has endured a difficult situation that could have dragged them to the bottom but didn’t, because they conducted themselves resolutely with personal courage, gets that. They know how it feels to emerge from an ordeal all the stronger in character.

The most we can ask for is to depart from this plane with dignity and be remembered as having lived as decorous life as possible by having done our best despite our voluminous warts, flaws, and other unseemly aspects. For in the end, that’s the meaning of life.

There is a critical need for veteran mental health care

I

t’s time that we need to amplify our voices to ensure that veterans and their families have access to necessary mental health care. We must continue to raise awareness of suicide prevention and prevention resources.

Suicide is a national health crisis in the U.S., with veterans having a higher-than-average rate. Veterans can suffer from traumatic brain injuries and post traumatic stress, as well as other issues such as medical conditions, unemployment,housing and financial concerns and more.

We have heard about the 22 veteran’s lives lost each day. However, according to the National Veterans Foundation, the number of veteran suicides is more likely 24-25 or more a day, translating to over 9,000 former service members each year who are lost to suicide. The rate of active-duty

suicides has been increasing over the last five years. It is important to note that 71% of Veteran suicides are by a firearm. It is vital that we also provide a focus on substance abuse.

I believe that if we all work together, we can make a difference.

Danny Allyn Loos Jr., born 1938, only child of Dan Loos Sr and Georgiana Loos. Raised in a German speaking home in Denver Colorado, the son of a “Denver famous” entertainer/wrestler. Danny Jr himself was gifted athlete, he was a child acrobat, wrestler, and football player playing for the first Denver Broncos team in 1960. He graduated North High School 1956 and Denver University with degree in business administration 1959. He served in the Colorado Army National Guard while wrestling professionally and refereeing from 1961-1965. He married Carol August 1963, serving and loving her and their four children, Tarja, D’Lana, PrestonD and Nicol for this past 60 years as well as his 8 grandchildren, a new great grandchild and one great grandchild on the way! Danny, owner of Evergreen Disposal Service, Inc, was a 4th Generation trash business owner,

beginning in the business when he was 5 years old. His great grandfather started the business with a horse and wagon in Denver in 1884. He was successful in business, the community and family, but would tell you himself that he gives all the credit to the Lord Jesus Christ in his life. He served as a teacher and a deacon in church and taught Community Bible Study for 11 years. He lived out his faith in every area of his life and was a witness to God’s great faithfulness.

His passion was his family and people he loved. He brought us all such joy, knowing we were loved and cared for by him. Thank you Jesus for this amazing man and example of Our Heavenly Father here on earth! We know he has now heard these precious words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

Dale Arthur Hoffman, born to Florence and George W. Hoffman on February 25, 1930, in Denver, CO; passed into our Lord’s arms on November 4, 2023. He is survived by his wife Evelyn Coffin Hoffman, his daughter Bambi (Hoffman) Moss (married to Ira Moss) of Conifer, CO, his grandchildren Catharine Marie Moss of Saco, ME, David Benjamin Moss of Littleton, CO.

Dale will be remembered forever in our hearts as a gentleman, a prince, a kind soul, and a wise man, he was called “Goombah” by his grandchildren which fit him to a “T”.

At Dale’s request there will be no formal services and his family will honor him and scatter his cremains keeping with his wishes.

Dale earned his PhD. from Colorado State University in 1962, followed by a lifelong career with BLM, Fish and Wildlife. He loved the outdoors, camping, fishing, and hiking and being in the woods in his home in Conifer, CO. Going to walks with his grandchildren was one of his greatest joys as he got older.

In the mood for the holidays: Evergreen, Conifer to host annual events Dec 1-2

The first weekend in December is the time to really get in the holiday spirit.

With Evergreen’s Holiday Walk on Dec. 1 followed by Christmas in Conifer on Dec. 2, the weekend is loaded with family fun for the foothills community. Both events are free, and there’s something for everyone.

Here’s a look at what’s in store at both events.

Holiday Walk

The 31st annual Holiday Walk in downtown Evergreen is Evergreen’s traditional way to herald in the holidays with locals and visitors turning out to watch performers, drink hot chocolate, browse through stores and greet friends.

“The Evergreen Downtown Business Association puts this on because we feel it’s important to care for our community and to give back

to the community with this nostalgic event,” said Larae Evans with EDBA. “It also helps the businesses kick off the holiday shopping season. It’s a truly magical experience when everyone can safely stroll through downtown Evergreen and enjoy the nostalgic holiday festivities.”

As in Holiday Walks past, Santa begins the evening with a tree lighting at the Evergreen Lake House at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 1. In addition, a Menorah and a Kwanzaa Kinara also will be lit.

After the ceremony, Santa will be transported in a horse-drawn carriage, led by an Evergreen Fire/ Rescue truck, into downtown. The community is invited to walk into downtown on the path lit by luminarias, and for some, it will be the first opportunity to walk on the new Evergreen Lake North Trail.

Evergreen Parkway through downtown will be closed from 5:30-9 p.m., making it convenient and safe to move from shop to shop and from

“We started with one (growth board) and then our friends and family asked for them,” Katie said. “We turned it into a business.”

This was the Garsts’ first year at the Holiday Boutique, and they were pleased with the crowds perusing the booths.

Margaret Heldenbrand of Littleton loves comical mice, and 33 years ago, she began creating tiny mice out of polymer clay, adding holiday decorations and more. She said her mice are from the night before “Twas the Night Before Christmas.”

“Every year, I come up with fresh ideas and colors. They are a lot of fun.

I have one idea and it turns into 10 more.”

Metalsmithing and jewelry making Local artists express themselves through forms of metal, precious gems, unique designs

The heat of the torch, the smell of pickling solution, the sound of metal on a mandrel and the look of a completed piece are common aspects silversmiths and jewelers in the Denver metro area enjoy about their craft.

Sara DeAngelo Jewelry: “Southwest, feminine, natural and detailed”

For Englewood business owner and professional jeweler Sara DeAngelo, these aspects of the silversmithing system are elements she loves, but they come secondary in her personal process.

“I am obsessed with stones and the history of how a stone is formed and how it’s literally the only one in the world like it,” DeAngelo said.

She said taking a unique “peace of the Earth” and “turning it into this beautiful treasured something that makes somebody feel more beautiful” is her favorite part of the craft.

Originally from Los Angeles, DeAngelo began her career in 1997 after a terrible encounter with a rude customer. DeAngelo said she quit her job and the very next day began selling her pieces door-todoor at different businesses.

“I walked out the door and then the next morning I went around with my little trays of jewelry to a bunch of stores and I got two retail stores that first morning and that sent me on a totally different path,” DeAngelo said.

DeAngelo currently has a retail store and studio at 16 E. Girard Ave. in Englewood.

She describes her styles as “Southwest, feminine, natural and detailed.”

“I make mostly sterling silver.

They’re usually hand stamped using Navajo stamps that I buy from the Navajo artists themselves and then (I use) unique gemstones that I literally search the world for,” DeAngelo said.

DeAngelo moved into her current location after outgrowing her last studio and while she wasn’t looking for retail, she’s happy she found it and she loves the connections she forms with people.

DeAngelo is an established artisan in the industry and she said she was featured in the Sundance Catalog. She said that was a dream goal for her and her work is sold in about 50 stores across the country.

She said the jewelry-making community is vast in Colorado because in her experience people seem to appreciate and value homemade items.

DeAngelo makes all sorts of pieces including rings, earrings and necklaces but she loves making earrings the most because they’re her favorite type of jewelry to wear.

DeAngelo said making a delicate piece can be very meticulous and detail-oriented.

“It’s harder than it looks…and it’s very exact,” DeAngelo said.

White said her specialties in jewelry making are stone setting and intricate stamping work and making things that “excite people and offend them too.”

Originally from New Jersey, White moved to Colorado about seven years ago and is now based in Boulder. White sells her pieces in Denver at markets and in galleries.

White said she was “stone obsessed” as a teenager. “I was collecting raw stones and I actually started wire wrapping and making mainly pendants and rings out of copper and brass,” White said.

During her senior year in high school, White said she was supporting herself, and while she enjoyed making her pieces, she was also selling them as a means of survival.

For White, the best aspect of jewelry making, which she has been doing for about nine years, is that it’s a threedimensional art form.

“I really love that metal feels like a resource that I can time and time again manipulate,” White said. “It feels like it can be recycled and repurposed. It feels like there is always a story to any jewelry pieces and anything metal-related.”

When she makes a piece, White said she notices a correlation between her mental state and the process.

The silversmith said she will start her process off with a “ceremony” whether it’s making a cup of coffee, smoking herbs or cannabis or saying a prayer.

“Jewelry making is like putting a little piece of my soul and body energetics into something that someone’s going to wear forever,” White said.

White describes her jewelry as different, unique and bold.

“I would say my jewelry has a core theme of being alternative,” White said. “I definitely dabble in everything from being edgy punk to almost like biker babe to boho flowy (and) gem-centered.”

White said people enjoy her jewelry which she sells through Instagram, on her website and in five stores in Denver and two in New Jersey.

White joined DeAngelo’s studio about three months ago and enjoys executing DeAngelo’s style of wire wrapping and knotting.

“What’s cool is I feel like I am hon-

ing a lot of my more nitty gritty skills,” White said. “Just making my things look nicer, cleaner, production style and mass quantity.”

In her home studio of organized chaos, however, with her own production assistant and canine companion Dobby, White said she’s a “one-man show.”

“I move all over the place. I change things. I do have a tendency to go in between projects,” White said.

White said she believes she’s “creating magic” in her studio.

“I feel like I am working with my hands and get to view magic by the end. I feel like I am an alchemist. I feel like I am connecting to the Earth,” White said.

Michelene Berkey: “Not for everyone”

Michelene Berkey is a metalsmith who has made jewelry for a large portion of her life and works from her home studio.

Based in Evergreen, Berkey said she designs and makes silver jewelry with high-carat gold accents, gemstones and different kinds of pearls.

Originally from New York, the 73-year-old said she has had an interest in jewelry making since she was child.

“My grandfather would go to the jewelry exchange in New York and bring home things wrapped up in little pieces of tissue paper and rubber bands,” Berkey said. “I remember standing at the table watching him unwrap these things and just being fascinated with jewelry.”

She attended California State of Long Beach, learned her techniques and “never stopped making (jewelry) and designing it.”

When she was in California, Berkey said she worked in various jewelry shops in the late 1970s and then she moved to Colorado. She said she didn’t have any jewelry connections and took a break from the craft profession to own and operate her own wallpaper and paint business.

Berkey said she returned to full time metalsmithing in 2000.

“The jewelry that I make is not traditional jewelry. It’s more what they call art jewelry,” Berkey said. “I know how to make traditional jewelry…

That’s what I was trained to do but the jewelry that I am making now is made from little sections of cottonwood twigs and just natural things that I find.”

“What’s left is the void of that particular piece that you’re making and then when you’re ready to actually do the casting you melt your metal and you pour it in and it fills in all of those places where the wax had been originally,” Berkey said.

She siad she wants her pieces to have a lot of texture.

“It’s an interesting process. The casting is the same as manufacturers would use to make anybody’s traditional wedding ring,” Berkey said. “In my case I am actually burning away the twigs because they burn away just the same as a wax.”

Berkey said her work is “not for everyone” but those who love it have responded well to her creations.

“The more people have seen it and understood that it’s silver and it’s made from the twigs they’re really fascinated with that,” Berkey said.

Berkey sells her work in galleries and she attends various shows throughout Colorado and other states.

Denver Jewelry Studio: A place to learn

Berkey is always willing to learn, and said she has attended the Denver Jewelry Studio in Littleton and taken classes in different techniques.

The studio has various levels of classes taught by many different instructors and managed carefully by studio owner Judy Brown.

“Our studio we call it a maker space. It’s basically for people who have no experience at all in metal smithing or they’re professionals and they’re looking to learn a new technique,” Brown said.

Located at 8392 South Continental Divide Road, Unit 104 in Littleton, Brown said Denver Jewelry Studio is open daily, except on Wednesday, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There are four total employees including Brown and 30 contract instructors who travel from all over the country to hold classes.

Brown said she purchased the studio from the previous owners in 2018 after teaching there.

“I am a retired state auditor for the state of Texas and Colorado and I needed a creative outlet,” Brown said.

Brown loves “the endless learning” of metalsmithing.

Brown said her style of jewelry is more natural, which was what she was interested in exploring.

“For somebody that’s a numbers cruncher I found that I gravitate to the organic because it gave me so much more freedom and a lot of times it mimics nature,” Brown said. “I am always fascinated with not only textures but colors that we find in natural rocks and tree bark.”

Brown said her primary technique to do and teach is cuttlebone casting.

“It’s a very old technique. They use the cuttlefish. I learned that one in 2007 and I just gravitated to it because I love the texture that you find in that,” Brown said.

Brown said she was developing her own style to the technique by making the casting thinner which wasn’t common. This she said is how she also entered the world of teaching.

“I love teaching because I love to see people learning to be creative.

I think being creative feeds our souls,” Brown said. “All of us need that in our lives in whatever form we have whether it’s cooking or painting.”

Brown said for those looking to

venture into metal smithing the studio recommends that they take the 30-hour Metalsmithing course and then go from there. She said information on classes can be found on the studio’s website.

She said people will learn the basics including sawing techniques, filing, hammering and setting stones.

“For us teaching the beginning students all of these techniques they don’t have to buy a lot of equipment to get started at home and they can really express their creativity,” Brown said.

Denver Jewelry Studio also offers Open Studio where artisans can pay a monthly fee to utilize its tools.

New Denver resident and jewelry maker Jenny Foulkes said she recently moved to Colorado and found the studio.

“I needed bench space because my studio is not set up in my home and (Brown) has all the tools, all the solder stations and they’re open all day,” Foulkes said. “I like the warm welcoming atmosphere.”

Miro Jewelers: A family owned business

Maira Miro, marketing and supplies of Miro Jewelers, said her family has been in the jewelry-making business for four generations.

“We’re a custom fine jewelry store. We do retail and manufacturing,” Miro said.

Located at 6750 S. Emporia St. in Centennial, Miro said the family opened their retail space 15 years ago.

Miro said both her father and her brother are jewelers and the family owns a factory in Lebanon, which is where the business began.

The family opened their current location in 2017 and Miro said her father attended college in Colorado and wanted to return.

For Miro, the best aspects of what she does are the custom pieces the business creates and seeing it journey over the last several years.

“It’s just the custom part of it and being able to take something that has been in our family for a long time and evolve it over time,” she said.

Miro explained the business has evolved from bench jewelry to manufacturing and retail.

She said they make everything from wedding bands to engagement rings to necklaces to earrings.

“The nice thing about custom is you can work with any style because you’re creating it all,” she said. “It’s not like you’re a brand that you have specific styles that you’re working around.”

While versatile in design, Miro said she would describe the company’s pieces as classic and trendy.

Miro said she is not a jeweler but she works on the back end of the business in purchasing and finance.

“I like that it’s a family business that we’ve grown over the generations and we will have for future generations too,” she said.

Applegate will replace incumbent Stephanie Schooley, who chose not to run for re-election.

Erin Kenworthy has two children in Jefferson County and has over 18 years of experience in public schools and community-focused non-profits.

Kenworthy believes teacher pay and retention is the most significant issue facing the district. To save money, Kenworthy said in a candidate Q&A, “We can focus on reduc-

ing costs associated with teacher turnover by attracting and retaining the highly qualified teachers we need and have in our district already. I’d advocate in favor of funding special education resources to avoid legal costs associated with not meeting legal requirements in individualized education plans.”

She believes schools have a responsibility to keep students safe and that the district’s educators are qualified to be supportive adults when discussing sensitive topics with children.

Kenworthy will replace incumbent Susan Miller who chose not to run for re-election.

Those elected to the Jefferson County school board serve four-year terms and will be sworn in before the end of the year They serve as volunteers and receive no compensation for their service to the school district.

Prepare for a new-look Evergreen girls basketball team Buenning-led Cougars will push the pace in 2023

For the first time in a half-decade, Maddy Hornecker isn’t the head coach of the Evergreen girls basketball team. After the twotime state title-winning coach pivoted into the athletic director role this past year, a familiar face is in as the new head honcho, and he’s excited to take over at the school he played for in the early 1990s.

Christopher “Cub” Buenning is entering his first year as head coach, but he’s no stranger to the team. On top of having two daughters playing for him this year, Buenning has been an assistant for the JV and third-level team for a few years and has helped coach several of the girls over the years as they’ve grown up. He’s also the middle school principal at Evergreen Country Day School.

After a tough 8-15 season last year, Buenning is excited about turning it around in 2023. The team did go 6-5 in a loaded Jeffco league, but the Cougars feel far from their back-to-back state championship glory from 2017 and 2018.

“I am the eternal optimist, and a lot of it has to do with the girls in the program,” Buenning, a 1992 Evergreen grad, said. “Again, having known these girls, most of them for quite a while … Just building that culture of what high school sports should be about. Yeah, I want to win league. I want to win state. But I want girls to look back in five to 10 years and be like, ‘High school basketball was so fun.’”

The Cougars’ last winning season was a shortened 10-5 year during the pandemic. Since then, it’s been a little turbulent on the court. But reinforcements are coming. The varsity team is loaded with future college athletes, Buenning said.

a tough, cohesive group that can lean on each other and their talents.

“I got athletes. I got girls that care about each other, play together, share the ball,” Buenning said. “I will not have a star this year. I will have a group of girls who care about each other, who care about having fun. I’m optimistic that we’ll finish higher in the league, that our overall record will be better.”

But the Cougars will look significantly different than last year. Losing four-year starting point guard Bella Reece and 1,000-point scorer Jameson Mott to graduation hurts, meaning this year’s team will have to be more reliant on a total team effort, Buenning said.

“I’m expecting a different star every night,” Buenning said.

Voluntary open gym runs have been happening all summer, and tryouts and practice begin next week. Buenning said he expects to have around 30 girls total this season, which is perfect for varsity, JV and third-level teams. He understands many schools don’t have that luxury and he’s determined to take advantage of the talent in the program.

Canyon Courier: Describe the style of this Cougars team you’re expecting to see this season.

Buenning: You’ll see a little bit more of an up-tempo team as opposed to more of a ball-controlled offense. We will be a very tough defensive rebounding team that looks to then turn missed shots and turnovers into easy baskets.

There’s a lot of talk in the state about implementing a shot clock.

I don’t think our team is going to have any issues with that. We’ll be up-tempo and be looking to take that early open shot.

CC: Who are two or three names on the team you’ll rely on heavily as leaders this season?

Buenning: There are a few. I have three seniors who were varsity players last year. I have a fourth senior who is kind of new to the program and she’s kind of working her way in as well. But Mary Cox, Gretchen Lynch and Tatum Buenning, those are my three senior returning starters. Mary was all-conference last year. Tatum is a track athlete who will be running at the

next level. Mary and Gretchen will both be playing soccer at the next level. But they’re great girls. Great leaders. There’s a really good culture right now from those girls as leaders that I’ll be leaning on heavily.

CC: Do you and Maddy Hornecker talk about the team and program often? How do you all differ as coaches?

Buenning: I think I’m a different person in a lot of ways.I have the utmost respect for Maddy.

She’s great. She’s one of my eldest daughter’s mentors. She’s an amazing person and an amazing educator. My perspective is maybe a little more process than result. I’m going to be a little more OK with turnovers that have happened in the past. But I’m still really close with Maddy. She was Tatum’s club coach all throughout middle school. She’s helped with my younger daughter who is a freshman in the program. I still talk to her pretty much every day, but it’s more logistically at this point of the year to get things ready for the season.

CC: What are some tangible goals and expectations in year one?

Buenning: I want to win the league. I want to be a Jeffco League champion. I want to do that this year. While I know we have some pretty big mountains with that, the team I think is the best in the league that we coached again last year was Littleton, and we beat Littleton last year. That was kind of our signature win last year. (I actually did the PA for the game last year, so I was kind of an assistant coach on the scorer’s table). But a tangible goal from the beginning is to win the league. As we move forward as a program … I drive by that state championship sign from 2017 and 2018. I talk about the banners in the rafters. Those big-picture goals are important. My personal goal is that the girls love playing basketball, and they love the team, and they love going to practice and spending time together.

Copart, an online vehicle-auction company, wants to buy the Bandimere Speedway property along C-470 in Jefferson County for a storage facility.

dimere family announced last April that it would close the race track and look for a new, larger location, one that had access to sewer and water, something Bandimere Speedway never had in its 65-year history.

Bandimere Speedway President John Bandimere Jr. spoke to the crowd, explaining that the changing environment around the race track made it difficult to expand, which is why it wanted to sell the property to Copart.

“Copart will be a respectful neighbor,” Bandimere said. “I speak for my family. We are sad to leave this place. … The address 3051 S. Rooney Road will always have a special place in our hearts.”

Bandimere said Copart’s proposal was good for the Town of Morrison.

“Morrison needs income, and that income will come from those 20 acres (on the south end of the speedway),” Bandimere said. “I really believe that.”

He said everyone wins with this plan.

“We need your support so we can (build a new speedway) somewhere else,” Bandimere told the crowd.

“If we can’t get support, we sit and wait.”

Marcus Pachner with The Pachner Group, a consultant to Copart, said Amazon and other large companies had looked at the property but were concerned about the lack of sewer and water.

The proposal

Kevin Bond, regional manager for Copart, said the company was not a stereotypical junkyard. Instead, it buys vehicles from insurance companies, financial institutions, charities and more and sells them in online auctions to used car buyers, dismantlers, dealers, body shops, salvage buyers and individuals.

Forty to 50 cars would be brought to the facility each day, and after being placed in outdoor storage, they would be sold, he said. A typical facility consists of an office building, customer parking, vehicle parking, and a shipping and receiving area.

The business would operate from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on weekdays, so there would be no activity on weekends.

Vehicles would not be dismantled

on site. Bond said the business would be as unobtrusive as possible.

State-required environmental impact studies would be performed on the property, and even though the area sees a lot of hail, no structures would be constructed to keep hail from damaging vehicles.

Copart also has facilities in Littleton, Brighton, Denver and Colorado Springs.

In response to audience concerns about lighting, Bond said rather than using lighting to provide security, Copart uses infrared cameras to pick up thermal images.

He said Copart itself would not add much to sales-tax revenue for Morrison because Colorado law sends sales tax to the municipality where the buyer resides rather than where the seller resides.

Why annex

He said since 20 acres of the Bandimere Speedway property already were in Morrison, the developer decided it made sense to annex all of the property into the town.

Benefits to Morrison and the area

Pachner said the benefits of Copart locating on the site included local employment plus less traffic, noise and lighting compared with Bandimere. He said screening would be installed to buffer the business from C-470.

While a site plan has not been developed, Pachner said walking and bicycling trails would be planned.

He hoped sewer and water could be provided to the south end of the property for retail development, something that would bring salestax revenue to the town, a positive addition to Morrison.

A Morrison resident suggested that Copart could help Morrison by creating a parking area and a shuttle service to bring more people into town. She said Morrison had a big parking shortage problem.

Pachner said it was important to Copart to contribute to the Town of Morrison’s motto to “Keep Morrison Morrison.”
