Denver’s PlatteForum has more youth internships, will pay them more PlatteForum plans to increase the number of youth it can serve through its ArtLab program. It will go from 40 to 50 interns thanks to a grant from the Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation.

PlatteForum’s ArtLab is an arts-education internship program for high school teens. It encourages them to engage with social issues and to use their voices to create change.

Interns get the chance to work with experienced professional artists on projects that hone their technical, social/emotional, creative, profes-

sional and academic skills. Additional resources available to each intern include private therapy, tutoring, groceries, case management and access to technology.

The grant will also allow the interns’ hourly stipend to increase from $10 an hour to $11 an hour.

PlatteForum is a Denver-based nonprofit that, in addition to its ArtLab, has an artist residency program.

Its art exhibits, performances and special events are always free and open to the public.

Evergreen rec district approves strategic plan

The Evergreen Park & Recreation District’s five-year strategic plan is now official.

The rec district board on Oct. 26 approved the document, which will guide its capital-improvement projects. How quickly projects are undertaken depends on whether voters approve a property-tax extension.

If it is approved on Nov. 7, about 65% of the funds would be used for maintenance and updating the district’s facilities and parks, 20% for rebuilding recreation, and 15% for expanding facilities and services.

The strategic plan has been crafted with three goals in mind: take care of what we have, rebuild recreation and expand services. The goals were formed after extensive public input earlier this year to determine how constituents wanted to improve the district.

While some detractors have been concerned that projects listed in the strategic plan are not directly

The ‘metamorphosis’ of the Evergreen marching band

The Cougar Pride Marching Band has gone through a metamorphosis in two ways this year.

The Evergreen High School band took third place in the 3A state competition in Pueblo last weekend with its performance piece called “Metamorphosis.”

It’s also the evolution of the marching band — or metamorphosis, so to speak — since 2020, when the program was nearly scrapped due to a lack of participation. In 2021, with an underdog 26-member band, it took ninth place at state. In 2022, the band placed fifth.

Now, after the third-place finish with a 52-member squad, taking first place at state in 2024 isn’t out of the question.

Ironically, for band members, winning isn’t the ultimate goal: It’s more about improvement, community and energy. They called the time commitment a privilege, not drudgery, and said they take care of each other.

Defining characteristics

“The two defining characteristics of the band are energy and community,” said junior Keigan McCabe, one of two drum majors. “We bring energy (to practices and competitions) no matter how hard it is, how cold it is or how sick we are.”

welcoming place for everyone.

“You have a place here,” she said. “I have played guitar and piano since I was young, but I never played clarinet. Bring your passion and determination. Half of our band is new.”

Bass drummer Elizabeth Bean noted that the band has had an influx of new people who have never marched before, but that doesn’t matter.

“The community atmosphere is one of the best I’ve seen at EHS,” McCabe said. “I have made some of the best friends through marching

band.”

They say the time together creates bonds that help them get through the turmoil of high school.

“It’s true commitment,” junior Steven Zoeller, the other drum major, said. “We are there with the same goal: to improve and to be there for each other.

The dedication allows everyone to be themselves.

“It’s such a safe place more than any other group at school,” Bean said. “You can be yourself.”

Fun atmosphere

Cory Goshorn, the instrumental music teacher and marching band director, brought the marching back to life after starting at the school in 2020. He reached out to Evergreen Middle School and Rocky Mountain Academy to start creating excitement about the marching band.

While the 2021-22 school year was rough, he said, things began improving.

Goshorn said his main teaching philosophy is to have fun and to perform the best show the group can.

“If we are not having fun anymore, we stop, do something fun, reconnect and have a laugh,” Goshorn said. “Students want to be a part of that. When it comes to competing, the goal is not to win. We want to walk off the field and say, ‘That was my absolute best today, and I did everything I could.’”

“He’s our father figure and leader,” Donaldson said.

“He’s the ultimate band dad,” Zoeller added.

In the fall, when the marching band practices 24 hours a week, they figure they see Goshorn more than they see their own dads, and Goshorn sees them more than he sees his own children.

Marching band members also gave a shout-out to their parents, who help fashion costumes, move instruments and equipment, feed them and help fund the program.

“Without our parents, we would be nothing,” Donaldson said.

Church of the Hills honored the Scottish heritage of both Evergreen residents and the Presbyterian church as part of a Kirkin’ o’ the Tartans ceremony.

“This is a way to honor our tradition and show gratitude for our heritage,” said the Rev. Richard Aylor, pastor of Church of the Hills.

“This is a way to glorify God and give thanks for our Scottish tradition.”

Conifer veteran Allisha Cody continues volunteering in her community

Allisha Cody leads a life of service.

The Conifer resident, who is the grants coordinator/grants accountant for the Sheridan School District, also volunteers as the quartermaster for Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12009.

She believes in helping in the community and helping fellow veterans.

Cody served in the Navy and in the Navy Reserves a year after high school, and she calls that time a great experience where she found camaraderie with fellow soldiers and lifelong friendships. It also taught her independence — taking care of herself and others.

That is the core of the life she leads.

As Veterans Day approaches, Cody knows her fellow veterans around the country will be honored for the time they spent serving and protecting the United States and its citizens.

Enlisting

Cody enlisted in the Navy on an impulse a year out of high school in Washington state. She was on academic probation in college and didn’t really know what she wanted to do with her life. A friend suggested they enlist together, and Cody thought, “Why not?”

She became an aviation technician, serving most of her four years in Jacksonville, Florida. After being honorably discharged, she took a five-year break and then enlisted in the Navy Reserves, working primarily as an administrative assistant out of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Buckley Air Force Base. She did one tour in Iraq and left the Reserves in 2011.

She said spending time in Iraq was life-changing and eye-opening.

“After being in Iraq, I don’t take things for granted,” Cody said. “I saw the Iraqis and how little they have, and when I came back to the United States, I saw how much we have. It taught me to live with less and to be very thankful for everything I have because they have nothing.”

Her time in Iraq helped her want to see different perspectives and try to help others even more.

“Being deployed really changes you,”

Encouraging others to serve

After moving to Conifer, she got involved with the VFW post. She called the VFW a place for veterans to meet, get help with things such as benefits and get involved in the community.

VFW Post 12009 is known for its monthly community breakfasts, for example.

Cody said she was surprised at the number of veterans living in Conifer and Evergreen, and she hoped the post could reach out to more of them.

Cody serves as quartermaster of VFW Post 12009, saying originally that she’d hold the position for a year. That was 12 years ago.

Cody said she would tell young people — including her daughter — that if they had the opportunity and it was something they wanted to do, serving in the military was a good option.

“It teaches you independence and life skills,” she said.

While Cody is honored to have served her country, she doesn’t think about it often, but that part of her past is always there.

“I’m glad I was part of that elite group” of veterans who served and protected the country, she said.

Her dad served in Vietnam in the Air Force, and she says both of her parents are proud that she enlisted and served.

Being a veteran is different for women than for men, Cody and Kirk Rosa, VFW post commander, said. They noted that women veterans — ”lady veterans,” as Cody calls them — have served bravely and honorably in the military, too.

Cody said people thank male veterans all the time, but they don’t think about women serving in the military.

“We served and proved ourselves,” Cody said. “In the military, it seemed like I always had to work harder.”

Rosa said he doesn’t look at Cody as a woman veteran.

“We all served,” he said. “We all did what we were ordered to do. I have nothing but the highest regard for her.

It’s hard to be a woman in the military.

She’s a veteran just like the rest of us.”

There’s a difference between the two days that Americans honor veterans, Rosa explained. Memorial Day honors those who died in service. Veterans Day honors people like Cody and her husband, Dave, who also served in the Navy.

The draft was abolished in the United States in 1973, so everyone in the military since then volunteered to serve their country, Rosa said. They served because they wanted to.

“We are not due anything,” Rosa said.

“A thank you goes a long way. Saying thank you for your service means more than anything. … Had we not done what we did, this country wouldn’t be what it is today.”

Husband and wife team of Mandy Brounacker and Willie Hagge work together at Irie by Nature Blooms – Brounacker is the floral designer while Hagge grows many of the flowers, greens and other plants used in the arrangements. The couple own a micro-flower garden in the Burland Ranchettes.

Brounacker said she’s never considered herself an artsy person, but she has found a creative outlet designing flower arrangements.

“I’m getting into more modern designs,” she said. “These are not your typical bouquets. I have found a way to express myself in a healthy way.”

“Irie” is a Jamaican word meaning happy, and Brounacker said she wanted the shop’s name to encompass good things.

Irie by Nature Blooms is in the King’s Valley Marketplace next to King’s Emporium, and inside are samples of beautiful floral arrangements plus work by local artists.

HearthFire Books’ new space in the adobe buildings

HearthFire Books is fully entrenched in its new space in one of the adobe buildings along Evergreen Parkway with comfy chairs, sun streaming through the windows and a welcoming atmosphere.

The open house and donations for photos with Santa are especially important this year because the nonprofit canceled its Zombie Walk thanks to the foot of snow that fell Oct. 25-26 in Evergreen, Cathleen Timmons with EAPL said. While EAPL simply moved participants’ registrations to next year’s event, it still needed to pay for insurance, permits and other items for the nowcanceled event.

“By continuing to support our fun-

draising, we will have the money to continue our mission into 2024 in a good position,” Timmons said.

She said families could bring their pets of all kinds, shapes and sizes for photos with Santa during the open house. Cost is $20 that includes digital photos. Those who might not want photos with Santa can have photos taken with a winter-scene backdrop.

Peaceworks receives state grant

Peaceworks Inc. in Bailey has received a grant for $312,600 from the

Colorado Department of Law to help it continue to address domestic-violence issues.

Peaceworks is one of 10 organizations receiving funding for their work on domestic violence prevention, victim-advocacy services and crisis intervention. The Colorado Domestic Violence Fatality Review Board recently released its annual report revealing the highest number of domestic violence deaths in the board’s history with at least 94 lives lost in 2022, highlighting the intense need for these programs.

Specifically, Peaceworks wants to use the money to enhance collaboration with partners through the de-

velopment of a Domestic Violence Response Team in addition to continuing to provide direct victim services.

PeaceWorks provides safe shelter, 24/7 crisis assistance, confidential advocacy and wellness programs to victims of domestic violence in Jefferson and Park counties.

The Department of Law received nearly $40 million in grant requests.

The requests were evaluated based on the purpose of the request, the target impact areas and the geographic service region.

However, Americans feel differently when it comes to their local newspaper. According to a 2023 national survey of 5,000 adults, local newspapers are the most relied on and trusted media source of original reporting: more than television and radio, and significantly more than social media. Trust in local newspapers extends across age groups and demographics, as adults of all segments recognize the value of reliable local reporting that newspapers deliver.

And, beyond just trusting the reporting local newspapers provide, Americans recognize how important it is to have a healthy local newspaper in their community.

EVERGREEN – On the morning of Sep. 28, Amandine was pleased to meet up with Genevieve, who’d agreed to drive Amandine to the grocery store. Amandine was less pleased when Genevieve immediately and oh-so-casually started “moving stuff ” out of her car and “packing other stuff ” into her car.

Still, if cooling her heels for a few minutes was the price of a ride, Amandine was prepared to pay it. Except that a few minutes turned into a few more minutes, turned into an hour, turned into “seven hours,” by which time Amandine was getting a little irritated and said so. Genevieve didn’t like Amandine’s tone, to say nothing of her ingratitude, telling Amandine “you’ve got a long way to walk” and punctuating that statement with a glancing blow from her cane. Realizing she wouldn’t be going anywhere any time soon, Amandine figured she wouldn’t lose anything by calling 911 and charging Genevieve with assault. Officers arrived, statements were taken, tempers cooled, charges were dropped, and deputies agreed to drive Amandine to the grocery store.

CONIFER – Taking the long way to dinner on the night of Oct. 3, the sporadically loving sweethearts kept busy arguing the miles away. Possibly needing a moment to organize his thoughts, Boyfriend pulled into a gas-and-go to “get something.”

Taking advantage of the momentary quiet, Girlfriend started mining Boyfriend’s cell phone for talking points and quickly concluded that Boyfriend spent the previous evening “with another woman.” When Boyfriend returned to the car, Girlfriend let him have it with both barrels.

Displeased and disarmed, Boyfriend simply drove away, leaving his cell phone and girlfriend in the parking lot. Girlfriend called JCSO and “hid in the bathroom” until deputies arrived. Girlfriend asked deputies to “stand by” while she retrieved some

belongings from Boyfriend’s house.

Because Boyfriend’s house is actually Jeffco-adjacent, officers suggested she contact authorities in that neck of the woods for assistance. Girlfriend got a ride home with her parents, and deputies deep-sixed the incident.

Twisted sister

CONIFER – Sister dialed 911 on Oct. 5 with distressing news. Brother was “going insane” and she’d been “pummeled in the face.” Speaking with Brother, deputies didn’t detect any obvious signs of lunacy and asked him to explain Sister’s allegations. Brother said they’d been packing up some of their parents’ estate and he’d come to suspect that Sister was pocketing a lot of it. Accused of parental pilferage, Sister had rushed him in a rage. Sister told deputies Brother “punched me in the face five or ten times.” Brother said Sister “fell down on some boxes.” After carefully weighing available evidence and testimony, officers concluded that reports of Brother’s violent derangement were, er, somewhat exaggerated. Deputies declared Sister’s complaint unfounded.

EVERGREEN – Some people like using self-checkout. Some people don’t. The man with the long ponytail hates it, as a grocery store employee discovered on the evening of Oct. 2 when investigating a ruckus in the self-checkout area, she found Ponytail “yelling” and “slamming food items into the scale.” Asked to stop beating up on the equipment, Ponytail raged about having to scan his own groceries. Asked to leave the store, Ponytail condemned Employee as a “brown noser” and stormed off in a huff. Employee called JCSO, asking deputies to formally trespass Ponytail from the premises. Although unable to locate the scannersmashing sorehead, officers did determine that he’s wanted in Illinois for a medley of misdeeds. Deputies left Ponytail a message saying he’s no longer welcome to shop there by any method.

Sheriff ’s Calls is intended as a humorous take on some of the incident call records of the Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office for the mountain communities. Names and identifying details have been changed, including the writer’s name, which is a pseudonym. All individuals are innocent until proven guilty.

We are sad to report James Dewane Denbow “Jim” passed into eternal life Oct 26th after battling Pneumonia, with his family by his side.

He was born 10/13/1934. His grandmother raised him in Morrison.

He spent his spare time at the livery stable where he learned about horses. He was a Farrier in Evergreen for over 50 years; if you had a problem horse, you called Jim. In grade school he met the love of his life Alice Styron; they married on May 8th 1954. Keeping their marriage vow for 69 years. “For better or worse until death do us part.” They raised 4 sons: Jimmer, Richard, Scott, & Steve.

Jim & Alice moved to Evergreen in MEHMERT

1960. Jim was a Heavy Equipment Operator. He made $1.23 an hour when he started. Jim built roads in Greenwood, Old Hiwan and Soda Creek Subdivisions.

We will all miss him. He is survived by his wife Alice, his sons, their wives, his 9 grandchildren, 1 passing before him.

Jim had a special love for his 13 great grandchildren.

Evergreen will be a duller place without Jim and his “true grit” attitude, love for his family, this town and his junk!

There will be a private burial at Morrison Cemetery. And memorial at The Elks Lodge in Evergreen Nov. 17th at 1PM.

Michael “Mike” Henry Mehmert December 11, 1947 - October 12, 2023

It is with a heavy heart we say goodbye to Mike Henry Mehmert, 75, who passed away peacefully at home on October 12, 2023, in Evergreen, Colorado surrounded by his family.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Laura, two children, Brandon Mehmert and Kristin Mehmert (Kent Jamieson), grandchildren Maddison and Austin Mehmert, grandson, Oliver Jamieson.

He is also survived by his mother, Helen Mehmert Bauman, sister, Cecilia Langford (Lanny Langford), nephew, Michael J. Mehmert.

Mike was born on December 11, 1947, in Greenville, Texas to Helen and Hank Mehmert. He attended Texas A&M University and went on to find his place as a leader in the ground water industry. He DARROW

was highly respected in his field. He enjoyed traveling the globe, teaching seminars, and training executives and co-authoring two textbooks in his area of expertise. It was often said by his colleagues, “You don’t work for Mike, you work with him.”

He married the love of his life, Laura Ann Brown on June 24, 1972, in Kansas City, MO. Friends and family describe the love shared between Mike and Laura as a blessing to be around, and something to aspire to.

They have called Evergreen, Colorado home for 40 years. Here they raised their two children and watched their grandchildren grow into capable young adults.

A Celebration of Mike’s Life will be held on Friday, November 17, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Rockland Community Church in Golden Colorado.

A guide to audio tours

T

he self-guided audio tour has been common in the art world since the 1950s, but like many other virtual tools, there has been a rise in the popularity of audio tours in other industries due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Audio tours can add extra elements that visitors do not get when walking the areas alone, according to Luna Hernandez, who works in the Dinosaur Ridge welcome center.

“The audio tour definitely gives you more information than if you were to just walk the trail on your own,” Hernandez said. “We do have those outdoor plaques and stuff like that on the trail. So you still get some information when you’re walking it. But with the audio tour, there is a resident geologist who guides you up the ridge and gives you a lot of information.”

Today, it’s not uncommon to plan a full-day trip complete with a tour of any place around the globe. This includes communities in the Denver metro region.

Self-guided tours in the region cover art, like the 40 West ArtLine; local landmarks, like Dinosaur Ridge; and whole natural regions, like the I-70 Audio Tour. The key to finding these tours is deciding what to see, the level of planned involvement and time allotment.

What to see

Art was the original self-guided audio tour and is a popular self-guided tour focus. In Lakewood, the 40 West ArtLine audio tours take participants through the growing arts district. There are three tour options, all narrated by “art advocate and tour guide” Corrine Anderson.

The Grit and Glitter tour is a primer on the importance and legacy of West Colfax. The tour takes listeners through the neighborhoods going toward Aviation Park in Lakewood. The tour gives history and a sort of mini art lecture on the outdoor art, murals and more along the busiest part of the 40 West Art District.

The Art and Leisure Tour begins at Lamar Street Light Rail Station and follows the track through some of Lakewood’s outdoor art, architecture and more. The Art and Leisure Tour also touches on Lakewood’s agricultural heritage before ending at Mountain Air Park.

The Transportation and Art Tour also begins at the Lamar Street Rail Station. It runs along Lamar Street to the 40 West Art District headquarters. The tour takes a historic slant and guides listeners through the history of the area in addition to highlighting the murals and outdoor art along the way.

However, art is not the only focus of guided tours in the area. Take an urban stroll through the history of the Five Points neighborhood with the Five Points Business District Walking Tour. It takes listeners on a reverent tour of Denver’s historic Black neighborhood.

The kids will love the blast to prehistoric Colorado in the Dinosaur Ridge Audio Tour. The tour is packed with dinosaur facts that will almost make the listener forget about the steepness of the 2.5-mile ridge climb.

The Wild I-70 Audio Tour is more of a natural Front Range focus that takes listeners from Golden to Glenwood. This tour is best done by car, bike or motorized vehicle. It’s 144 miles long and talks about wildlife, including historic animal migration facts, in addition to other natural history and environmental facts.

There are other tours like the State Capitol Audio Tours which concentrates on the Capitol building in Denver, The Story Line Audio Tour touches on 15 sites integral to the history of the city of Aurora and Arapahoe County and the Highlands Ranch Mansion self-guided tour.

What to consider

Choosing a tour can be a chore. There are a few things to consider before deciding, so a little research is required.

Pricing is one issue to consider. Some apps that offer a slew of guided tours also charge up to $50 per person. However, many of the self-guided tours are free to the public. The 40 West ArtsLine Tours are free, but the Dinosaurs Ridge Tours cost $7 per streaming device.

Also, consider the activity level and time commitment. It can take about 3 hours to complete the Dinosaur Ridge Audio Tour, but there are actual fossils and tracks along the hike. Parts of the ridge itself is a drag mark from beasts that roamed the area millions of years ago, according to the tour.

Only bikes and feet are allowed on the tour, so taking the Dinosaur Ridge tour is much more intense than the Highlands Ranch Mansion tour. There is also the weather and seasons to consider for any outdoor tour. The Wild I70 Tour is a brilliant idea for fall foliage. Also consider the drive in May or June, when the wildflowers are in bloom and the baby animals are about.

Some of the tours, like the ArtLine tours, have chapters so that listeners can schedule accordingly.

Be sure to factor in the time of day. Sitting in traffic after an intense hiking tour is tougher than it seems at the beginning of the trip.

Where to go

The research before you go is key. To find the tours, look at the sites for places you wish to visit. Chances are, there is an audio tour that you can preview before embarking.

Several apps exist that compile the audio tours in the area in one place.

However, sometimes the information on the apps is inaccurate and the price higher than the original site requires, so always go to direct websites.

Conifer girls basketball hopes to bounce back in 2023-24 Lobos hope for improvement, reinforcements after 4-19 season

Going into her second year as head coach of the Conifer girls basketball team, Connie Ireland looks for competitiveness and improvement from her team while working to build a winning culture in the mountains.

But a winning season still feels like a tall task away. The Lobos finished 4-19 last season and 2-11 in a loaded Jeffco league that is home to powerhouses like reigning league champion and 4A state runner-up D’Evelyn (who beat Conifer 64-4 last season).

“The good news is we only lost two seniors,” Ireland said. “But we have two seniors this year (also). The rest of them are pretty young. Last year was tough. The program as a whole has been pretty beaten up over the last several years. We’re just trying to work hard to get kids back interested in basketball again and get back to a competitive level.”

The bad news is the numbers are down, she said. Conifer is hosting tryouts on Nov. 13, and Ireland hopes for more interested girls to give basketball a shot.

Plus, there isn’t really a strong feeder program for Conifer from the elementary and middle schools, unlike other Jeffco schools that do have that luxury. It makes for an uphill battle, Ireland said.

“The Jeffco league is absolutely stacked, and we have a lot of tough challenges,” Ireland said.

Before becoming the head coach last season, Ireland was an assistant for the Lobos for four years between 2011 and 2015. After moving on to Green Mountain as an assistant for five years, she’s back home to Conifer in the captain’s chair.

Colorado Community Media: Why do you think numbers are down for Conifer girls basketball this year?

Ireland: They’re doing a lot of volleyball, they’re doing a lot of softball, doing lacrosse … it’s disheartening at times. But we’ve got a good bunch of kids who are dedicated.

We’re looking for more, always, to get into the gym and join us. But the few that we do have, I really have a lot of faith in. They’re hard workers, they want to get better, and that’s all we can ask as a staff.

CCM: How many girls do you have, and how many do you hope to have after the tryout on Nov. 13?

Ireland: I’m counting about a dozen that we have right now, so we may be down to having just one varsity team. I would love to see five, six, seven more show up. We’ll certainly take them. We will try to make two teams and get them some experience, get them some game time, teach them fundamentals and what

the game is about. I’d love to have two teams going forward. We’ll see what happens.

CCM: What is a realistic expectation coming into a new season after a tough one?

Ireland: We’d love to see competitiveness. We’re probably going to be out-experienced with a lot of these bigger, stronger, more talented teams. But if you can give me some grit, and never quit … We’re going to focus on playing strong defense, causing turnovers, and trying to get some fast break points. Whatever we can do to try and hang tough.

The biggest thing for me is trying to turn around the culture of “the program’s not very good, why do people want to come watch,” etc. to “hey, these girls have some life to them, some spark.” I’m trying to bring some pride back to the Conifer Lobos program.

CCM: Who are some leaders you’re going to lean on this season on the court?

Ireland: I’m probably going to lean heavily on Finley Johnson, who is a junior who has experience. Man, she plays her heart out whenever she’s out on the practice court or the

game court. And then we’ve got a talented freshman Megan Swearengin, who has played some club ball, played in middle school … She’s got some natural talent. But we’ve got some girls who played for us last year who have really improved and come along. But I think those two and Eleanor Sikora, who is an outstanding softball player. We’re going to lean on her for her leadership and athletic skills as well.

CCM: How do you go about establishing a feeder program for the Lobos?

Ireland: I’ve got some terrific people who are helping organize and coach our middle schoolers, which really gets us excited about future years at Conifer. We’ll get them established in middle school with the fundamentals and when they get to us at the high school level, we can definitely do well with the upcoming talent. My coaching staff is made up of great people as far as being committed to turning the culture around and bringing some pride back into Conifer Lobos girls basketball.

Heavy snow and snow-making at the Clear Creek County ski area means good powder for upcoming opening

Although warm weather stretching into October prohibited snowmaking at Loveland Ski Area, a late snowstorm blanketed the 1,800 acres of mountains with more than 11 inches of snow, readying the slopes for the ski season ahead.

“It’s going to be a good year,” said Dustin Schaefer, Loveland Ski Area’s marketing manager.

With plenty of mountain ski areas such as Breckenridge, Vail, Copper Mountain and Keystone, competition for skier dollars is always a chal-

lenge, Schaefer said.

Arapahoe Basin in Dillon claimed the title of first chair of the season on Oct. 29 this year, but most resorts are announcing opening dates through November. Loveland Ski Area does not yet have an official open date, but it’s coming within the next few weeks, according to Schaefer.

A regular season lift ticket at Loveland is $149 this year for skiers or boarders 15 years and older. For those up to 14 years old, a lift ticket will be $45 and anyone under 5 years old skis free, according to Schaefer.

“The special thing (at Loveland) is we’re not a ski resort, we’re a ski area. When you go to Loveland, you feel like family, not a number at a regular resort, and we try to keep lift passes financially affordable,” Schaefer said.

A study by RRC Associates, a research company in Boulder, states that Colorado’s ski industry generates $4.8 billion in annual economic output and supports more than 46,000 year-round equivalent jobs.

Case dismissed Idaho Springs approves development plan for Clear Creek School District’s bus barn

Months of friction between Idaho Springs and Clear Creek School District officials concerning the school district’s proposed bus barn ended when the Planning Commission approved the site’s Final Development Plan.

On Nov. 1 after 20 minutes of discussion, the Idaho Springs Planning Commission unanimously approved the plan to put the bus barn, known as the Transportation and Maintenance Facility or TMF, on the track site just south of the former middle school on Highway 103.

The decision ends a lawsuit that Idaho Springs filed against the school district in August because the city contended the school district hadn’t gotten the proper zoning approvals and permits before site work began. The city said its regulations concerning traffic control, lighting, landscaping, parking, noise, drainage, stormwater and erosion control apply to the project because they impact surrounding neighborhoods.

The school district believes that because it’s a public entity, it falls under the jurisdiction of the state rather than the City of Idaho Springs.

The Colorado Department of Public Safety’s Division of Fire Prevention and Control issues building permits for school districts, it says.

noting that if school district and city officials could come to an agreement, they could avoid six months to a year of litigation.

“There was a disagreement about what Colorado statutes allow,” Assistant City Administrator Jon Cain said. “Impacts to the surrounding area and the community — the city maintains that land-use control, so our Final Development Plan process, which we did tonight, is a process to measure those impacts.”

“This (Planning Commission) hearing is part of a settlement to dismiss the lawsuit,” Idaho Springs City Attorney Nicholas Klein said. “As part of a bargaining settlement, this is the lone hearing on the subject, the final decision.”

Interim Superintendent Mike Gass said after the hearing: “What we needed for (city officials) to do is kind of put a bow on it, and I think we got there.”

School board member Kelly Flenniken added: “The city recognized the authority school districts have as an independent government … so I think this shows the quality of partnership between the city and the school district. … We have kids that need to be transported next school year, so I’m very, very thrilled.”

City staff recommended approval of the plan because the request adhered to the Idaho Springs Land Development Regulations, which mandated the FDP process, according to documents provided to the Planning Commission. Concerns about the building and the site, which the city provided to the school district more than a year ago, have been met, the documents said.

In 2022, the school district applied for a Final Development Plan approval with Idaho Springs, and city staff had six conditions of approval.

The school district didn’t follow up,

believing it fell under state requirements. Now those six concerns have been met, the Planning Commission documents said.

They included that the school district had the proper setbacks from Highway 103, that it provided a landscaping plan using drought-tolerant plants, that the TMF won’t be intrusive to neighbors, parking stalls are the appropriate size, fuel tanks meet city requirements and the building complies with architectural requirements.

The school district and Idaho Springs also had resolved issues related to a September cease-and-desist order that demanded the school district stop installing a main water pipe at the site. However, the school district said it was a misunderstanding, its crews were not working on a water line and the school district was waiting for city approval to install the pipe.

A former Clear Creek County sergeant plans to plead guilty in the killing of Christian Glass. A deputy wants a trial.

In a crowded courtroom in Clear Creek County, a former sheriff’s deputy and former sergeant entered vastly different pleas to charges associated with the shooting death of Christian Glass.

Former Clear Creek County Sgt. Kyle Gould announced he will plead guilty in the Nov. 2 hearing and agreed to return to court on Nov. 16, when charges will be announced and he will be sentenced, according to Judge Catherine Cheroutes. Gould is charged with criminally negligent homicide and reckless endangerment.

The details of Gould’s scheduled plea deal with prosecutors are not public, according to the court.

Meanwhile, former Clear Creek County deputy Andrew Buen, who is charged with murder in the 2nd degree, official misconduct and reckless endangerment, entered a plea of not guilty and requested trial by jury through his attorney.

Glass died on the night of June 10-11, 2022, when he was stranded in his car near Silver Plume. He had called 911 for help, saying he was trapped and his car was stuck. Officers asked Glass to leave his car, but he refused in what turned into a long standoff that ended when officers broke the car window and used a Taser on Glass. Buen shot Glass five times, killing him, according to the indictment.

Gould was in contact via cell phone with Buen during the encounter, the indictment states. Buen muted his bodyworn camera audio during the cell phone conversation, and the conversation was not recorded, according to the indictment.

“It’s so hard for us,” Sally Glass, Christian’s mother, said outside court following the Nov. 2 hearing. “Those men were responsible for the death of our son.

Gould has accepted responsibility, you can see in his face he’s sorrowful.”

The Glass family, however, had harsh words for Buen.

“The other man (Buen) — I don’t

know if I can even call him a man — the way he behaved that night was inhuman, abject cruelty to our son,” Sally said in tears. “You hear that not-guilty (plea) and it’s like, Jesus are you kidding me?”

The Glass family attorney, Siddhartha Rathod, added: “Nothing is enough, there is no punishment that will bring Christian back to his parents and that is the only thing that would be justice.”

Defense motions in the Buen case are expected by Nov. 27. Cheroutes wants to know if the defense will request a change of venue in the case and a hearing on any motions filed is set for Dec. 18.

When asked by the judge, prosecutor Stephen Potts said finding a jury pool and the trial itself could take four weeks.

including the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office. In a court-ordered apology as part of the settlement, Albers placed blame on deputies who “failed to meet expectations.”

During his job interview in October before Clear Creek County Commissioners, interim Sheriff Matthew Harris said he’d seen body camera footage of Glass’ death and believes that first responders, including deputies, lacked patience and understanding.

“It was taking too much time and so you can’t let time drive decision making, to make an awful decision,” Harris told commissioners.

County commissioner Sean Wood said he also watched the body camera footage.

“My reaction was (that) I’ve got to do whatever I can in the time I have left in office to make sure something like that can’t happen again,” he said.“Whoever the next sheriff is, that person is going to have a big responsibility in making sure that whatever reforms need to happen, happen.”
