Nearly a third of Colorado students were chronically absent last year, missing 10% or more of the days they were supposed to be in school, according to new state data.

That’s slightly better than the 202122 school year — when COVID’s omicron variant ripped through schools —but far worse than any year before the pandemic.

Colorado education leaders are sounding the alarm about the missed days, as student academic performance still hasn’t recovered to pre-pandemic levels.

“Every day a student is in school is an opportunity for them to learn, build relationships and access support,” Colorado Education Commissioner Susana Córdova said in a press release. “We know districts are working hard to ensure students at-

tend school regularly. But we need everyone, including educators, parents, students and community members, to make a renewed effort on this important matter.”

“The surest way to make improvements in our recovery from the disruptions of the pandemic is for kids to be in school,” Córdova added.

Colorado’s chronic absenteeism rate was 31% last year, representing 269,582 students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Before COVID, rates ranged from 18% to 24%. Colorado is not alone, with most states reporting more students missing school.

Some groups had a greater share of students who were chronically absent. Kindergartners and 10th, 11th, and 12th graders all had chronic absenteeism rates above 35%. Roughly 40% of English learners missed too many days of school, as did 43% of low-income students and 60% of

homeless students.

And the majority of absences — 62% — were excused.

Jeffco teacher wins $100,000 teaching excellence award

Green Mountain High School manufacturing and construction teacher Alexander Adkisson got the surprise of a lifetime when he walked into school Tuesday, Oct. 3. Rounding the corner to erupting cheers, Adkisson learned he was the $100,000 grand prize winner of Harbor Freight’s Tools for Schools Prize for Teaching Excellence.

The school, located in Lakewood, got $70,000 to invest in the career tech program, and Adkisson walked away with $30,000.

“I feel so honored that I could be awarded this prize, seeing that there’s a lot of really good teachers out there that do a lot of really cool things,” Adkisson said. “It’s amazing to be part of such an elite teaching cohort and to be a Harbor Freight Tools for Schools prize winner not only for the money, which is super exciting but to be able to put it into our schools.”

According to a statement from the district, “Adkisson is driven by a love of teaching students about careerconnected learning that dissolves the traditional division between core academics and the skilled trades.”

He developed the school’s “AMPED on Algebra” curriculum,

which combines core academics with trade and industrial education in the manufacturing career pathway, and he co-leads the Geometry in Construction program.

Adkisson leads training sessions nationwide and has helped more than 275 schools start and sustain the AMPED on Algebra curriculum.

In AMPED, students learn Algebra 1 and manage a real business that provides the students with connections to business and marketing pathways.

“I firmly believe in hands-on learning, so I teach math through the different trades that we’re doing and it gives them a real-life application for it,” Adkisson said.

An independent panel of judges chose Adkisson and his fellow recipients from among more than 1,000 applicants representing all 50 states.

About the Harbor Freight Tools for Schools Prize for Teaching

Harbor Freight’s Tools for Schools prize began in 2017 to “recognize

outstanding instruction in the skilled trades in U.S. public high schools and the teachers who inspire students to learn skills to prepare for life after graduation.”

At a time when the demand for skilled trades teachers is high and more students are taking part in alternative post-secondary education and career options, Harbor Freight has awarded more than $7 million to around 130 U.S. public high school teachers and their schools’ programs.

“With a deep respect for the dignity of these fields and for the intelligence and creativity of people who work with their hands, Harbor Freight Tools for Schools aims to drive a greater understanding of and investment in skilled trades education, believing that access to quality skilled trades education gives high school students pathways to graduation, opportunity, good jobs and a workforce our country needs,” said a company representative in a press release about the award.

Jeffco Public Schools’ expansion of Bergen Valley begins

The Bergens elementary schools are ready to make an omelet — figuratively speaking.

That’s how Ted Hagan, senior project manager for Jeffco Public Schools, explained a construction project starting this week that will ultimately combine two schools that have operated jointly for a quarter century while being 1.7 miles apart.

It starts with breaking a few eggs – noise, dust and other inconveniences – but when a 15,000-square-foot addition to Bergen Valley Elementary School in Bergen Park is complete in August 2024, the result will be a beautiful omelet, or 10-classroom addition, Hagan said..

Slated to close, Bergen Meadow on Hiwan Drive was built in 1970.

It was known as Bergen Elementary School, and it housed all elementary school grades.

Bergen Valley on Sugarbush Drive is about 1.7 miles away and was constructed in 1997 to provide more space for the overcrowded Bergen Elementary. Since 1997, Bergen Meadow houses students in preschool through second grade, and Bergen Valley houses students in third through fifth grade.

Bergen Meadow and Bergen Valley — known together as The Bergens — share a principal; buses; a PTA; a digital teacher librarian; art, music and physical education teach-

ers; mental health professionals and more.

The addition to Bergen Valley will allow the school district to close Bergen Meadow. Jeffco Public Schools closed 15 elementary schools this school year because of declining enrollment.

According to the district, declining birth rates and rising housing costs in the county have shifted demographics away from families with children. Enrollment in the schools has declined steadily. In the last three years, the school system went down by roughly 5,000 students.

“This is a historic moment,” Kristen Hyde, The Bergens’ principal, said at a groundbreaking. “We are one Bergen community. Today marks the moment we will be joined as one.

We can’t wait to be under one roof.”

Hyde has said that, when combined in fall 2024, the school is projected to have about 500 students with a capacity for 640 students.

Since the schools are consolidating, a few jobs will be eliminated.

District officials conducted a groundbreaking ceremony on Oct. 18 with students, faculty, parents and Crossland Construction representatives in attendance. Crossland does many school construction projects nationwide, and this is its 10th construction project for Jeffco Public Schools, according to a company representative.

The one-story addition will be in the back of the school building.

The greenhouse the PTA erected in 2018 will be relocated to accommodate the addition. Seven of the 10 new classrooms will be dedicated to preschool and kindergarten. A playground also is planned, and a second entrance to the school will be constructed off of Sugarbush Drive to help with traffic flow.

The $9 million addition will be funded by the bond voters approved in 2018 to make upgrades to schools throughout the district. The bond also funded additions at Evergreen

Middle School, Parmalee Elementary and Wilmot Elementary, a new school for Marshdale Elementary, renovations to Evergreen High School and more.

Teachers have lauded the benefits of educating students when the two schools consolidate. They said being in one building would allow teachers to collaborate more, older students to mentor younger students and families to feel more integrated into the school.

Everyone at the groundbreaking was excited for construction to start.

EHS club combines skeleton and books in mural

Take an empty wall and the importance of letting people know where to find two businesses. Add an Evergreen High School club eager to paint murals.

The result is a painted wall apropos to both Evergreen Spine & Sports Medicine and HearthFire Books with arrows to the individual businesses’ doorways. The EHS Mural Club, which painted the mural on the building behind the Evergreen dam garden, is responsible for the new mural from design to completion.

Club members joined the two business owners during an open house on Oct. 14 so everyone could admire their work and celebrate the project’s completion. The mural is in

one of the adobe buildings at 3042 Evergreen Parkway.

The mural combines books and a skeleton symbolizing both businesses. Vines intertwine the books and skeleton because Maya Gonzales, owner of Evergreen Spine & Sports Medicine, loves plants, with drawings of spines and plants in the entryway to her business.

“I think it turned out really good,” said Sarah Grundemann, EHS art teacher and adviser to the Mural Club.

Junior Madison Hillmann has been part of the Mural Club since it started, creating the poster to announce the club’s start. She was the lead designer on this mural, noting that she was looking for something to unite the two offices in one piece of art.

HearthFire, liked her drawing of a non-scary skeleton reading book.

Once the design was approved, Madison experimented with color palettes, got those approved and then the Mural Club got to work, painting the wall on Saturdays for the past month.

Gonzales said her family has been involved with EHS, but more typically with band, sports and theater.

She hopes the mural will help bring recognition to the club and the good things EHS is doing.

“Evergreen High School is really fortunate to have (Grundemann) as part of our staff,” said principal Skyler Artes. “She has brought so much joy to the school and the community through art. She and her students are exceptional.”

Juniors Bethany Reimers, Natasha Marion and Oakley Fellow chatted after their families checked out the mural. They joined the Mural Club to be with their friends and to create art.

“Mural Club is fun and you feel cool,” Bethany said. “Every time I look at it, I say, ‘I did that.’”

Opinions differ on the benefits, detriments of consolidating 3 fire departments on the 285 corridor

Editor’s note: This is the second of two stories looking at the proposal to consolidate the Inter-Canyon, Elk Creek and North Fork fire departments. This story looks at some of the issues that have been raised regarding consolidating the departments.

The story in the Oct 19 issue focused on the history and facts about the departments.

A host of issues have been raised by both the proponents and opponents of the proposed consolidation of the Elk Creek, Inter-Canyon and North Fork fire departments on the 285 corridor.

Emotions have run high over the issue, and voters in each district will be asked to decide on consolidation.

Each fire district has two consolidation-related questions: whether the three fire districts should consolidate and whether the fire districts may increase property taxes to 16 mills. Voters must approve all six ballot questions for consolidation to take place.

In addition, Elk Creek voters will be asked to keep a sunsetting property tax in case consolidation fails.

Following are some of the issues consolidation opponents have raised, and responses from consolidation proponents.

Reduction in fire service

The website for Save Elk Creek Fire, which is against consolidation, said consolidation would mean a reduction in emergency services for residents in the Elk Creek district.

While all three fire departments have volunteer firefighters, Elk Creek is the only fire district that has a staffed fire station 24/7 with fulltime paid firefighters known as career firefighters.

The group said if consolidation was approved, career firefighters at Elk Creek’s Station 1 on U.S. 285 and Richmond Hill Road would become responsible for covering more calls than those in Elk Creek. Those career firefighters would immediately become tasked with many more calls across the expanded 400-squaremile consolidated district.

“They say it will be three years before the consolidated district is fully staffed,” Neil Whitehead III, a Save Elk Creek Fire member, said. “Why should we be subjected to a lower level of service?”

Deb MacPhee, a member of Save Elk Creek Fire, added: “Our whole issue is Elk Creek is sound as an entity.

Consolidation essentially puts the fire district at risk.”

Bethany Urban, an Elk Creek paramedic who is also with Elk Creek Professional Firefighters Local 4710, countered that if consolidation was approved, little would change on Jan. 1, and firefighters and paramedics would still respond to calls in their respective areas.

“This process of consolidation does not happen overnight,” Urban

said. “We don’t snap a finger and consolidation takes place. It must be a slow, strategic, tactical rollout to take care of the community, the firefighters and dispatch, which can’t change overnight.”

Ghosts, goblins, fairies and the Cookie Monster came to the Halloween trail at Buchanan Park.

Families walked in darkness from the Buchanan rec center through part of Elk Meadow and around the Buchanan ponds, stopped at trunk-or-treat areas and generally had a great spooky time.

Ben Christensen, who brought his family to the Halloween walk, was excited that while the weather was chilly,

it was still OK to wear costumes without coats. Traditionally, Halloween in the foothills is cold, so coats over costumes is a necessity during trick-ortreating.

Plus, he added, the event finished pretty early, so his children were home for bedtime.

About 350 people came for the Halloween fun, staying for a showing of the movie “Hocus Pocus” on a gigantic screen in the Buchanan fields. The event, in mid-October to get people into the Halloween spirit, is sponsored by the Evergreen Park & Recreation District.

Jessica Coons of Conifer brought her daughter Abigail, 8, and friend McKinley Swanson, 8. She said this was a fun

way to do something with her daughter. Jessica’s and Abigail’s outfits were outlined in blinking lights.

Mindy Howley put lights on the stroller she pushed while Ethan, 10, Rafael, 8, and Levi, 5, ran around the Buchanan fields, hoping the lights might help her boys find her. The family said this event was always fun.

Addie McEvers and Mia Ives, both juniors at Evergreen High School, handed out candy to trick-or-treaters at the first candy stop, saying they were happy to help out.

Liz and Jason Leisinger brought the entire family: Daisy, 4 months, Gretel, 2, Dorothy, 4, and Eloise, 6, because they love Elk Meadow, especially a nighttime walk.

MacPhee said response times to emergency calls wouldn’t change much with consolidation.

“We already have intergovernmental agreements and mutual aid among the three districts,” MacPhee said. We feel they don’t have good arguments for consolidation. (The three districts) collaborate just fine now.”

Currently, Elk Creek, North Fork and Inter-Canyon use mutual aid to help each other during large calls or when a department responds to more than one call at a time.

However, Urban said, once a fire department is called out to an emergency, mutual aid takes another call, which adds to the time the second fire department can respond. By consolidating, all first responders would receive calls at the same time, shortening response times.

“Part of streamlined dispatch is everybody will know about (calls) right away,” Urban said.

Urban added while the three fire districts already cooperate, consolidation would allow them more closely to work to reduce wildfire risks.

“Wildfire doesn’t care where district boundaries are,” Urban said. “It doesn’t stop at the district boundary.

Right now, if something happens in one district, it’s a reaction, and that takes some time. The way we need to start thinking now is more from a risk-reduction and risk-avoidance mindset of how we will work together ahead of time to help prevent the catastrophe from happening.”

The Save Elk Creek Fire website explains its position: “This has increasingly created a dysfunctional working relationship between career union staff and the volunteer crew. Consolidation would only exacerbate this environment as the expressed intent is to dramatically increase career union staffing while planning for a significant attrition of volunteer members.”

“Finding volunteers is hard,” MacPhee said. “If we don’t make an effort, it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy.

As a rural community, we need a healthy volunteer corps.”

Volunteer firefighters who spoke at an Elk Creek Fire board meeting on Oct. 12 vehemently denied those allegations.

“There is not a dysfunctional relationship between volunteer and career firefighters,” volunteer firefighter Brendan Wilkins said. “Not only is it harmonious, but to me as a volunteer, it embodies the definition of a family. Our strength lies in our mutual respect and camaraderie with a common goal to ensure safety of neighbors and protect lives. Our shared mission unites us.”

Volunteer firefighter Andrew McManus added: “There is a lot of misinformation about the volunteer (firefighters) here. One is that we don’t get along with union members. That is completely bogus. We need more career firefighters. To insinuate that you can replace needed career firefighters with a volunteer like me is false.”

Let’s blow the whistle on public-land abusers ozens of TVs, refrigerators, stoves, washers, dryers and abandoned cars had either been gunshot, torched or

both.

This place of destruction was what some locals called “Carnage Canyon,” roughly 30 acres off Lefthand Canyon in Boulder County, Colorado.

It was a shocking sight, but was it unique? Think about your own nearby public lands.

This canyon’s history began with mountain biking. Sometime in early 2000, a mountain biker discovered the canyon and developed a trail through it. Then, more bikers came in droves and “motocrossers” also loved it, particularly because nobody was around making rules or telling them what to do.

Nobody complained to the Forest Service, the managing federal agency.

After them came people in Jeeps who liked to plow through mud, crawl over big rocks and climb up the sides of the canyon. They also widened the trail into a one-lane, eroded dirt road.

Still other folks figured the canyon was a great place to dispose of junk cars and appliances until the place began to resemble an open landfill.

Target practice came next. Still, no one complained.

What else happened to this much-abused canyon? A murder and manhunt followed by homeless people whose encampments were not healthy for what was left of the woods. Yet none of this was the cause Rob Pudim for restoring the canyon to its original state.

Hey, there were no complaints!

But here’s how erosion changed things. It brought water carrying large amounts of silt down past the canyon’s mouth and into Lefthand Creek. After the silt killed all the aquatic insects, the trout left. It was people who liked fishing for trout who demanded that the steam be fixed, and that meant the canyon had to be restored.

The Forest Service invited two nonprofit groups — Wild Lands Restoration Volunteers and Trail Ridge Road Runners — and Walsh Environmental Services to restore the canyon.

Over seven years, bullet-ridden debris was hauled away and the squatters discouraged. But it took hundreds of volunteers to dam the erosion channels — one 20 feet deep — and replant grass, shrubs

and trees in the trashed roads and open areas.

Some areas had eroded so steeply that a person could stand upright, reach out and touch the ground.

Hay bales used to mulch grass seeds would tumble down the slope like bison stampeding over a cliff.

But one problem remained and it was a big one: target shooting.

A number of “near misses” made many shooters uneasy. There were also five documented shootings involving Forest Service employees and 10 complaints from area residents about flying bullets too close for comfort.

When the Forest Service erected signs closing the area to recreational shooting, their signs became targets riddled with bullet holes. But after the canyon was damaged by flooding in 2013, motorized access became blocked and target shooting was phased out.

These days, the canyon no longer looks lunar, fish are finally back and silt traps at the bottom of the canyon are almost empty. Mountain bikers are welcome on designated trails.

Locals liked to blame tourists, newcomers and outsiders for the illegal dumping, vandalism and unregulated shooting in the mountains. But Carnage Canyon’s problem areas were not tourist destinations, and most of the broken appliances and

shot-out signs were problems well before the surge of newcomers.

The truth is that when damage occurs over the decades, it is usually done by people who live in the area.

We have to put the blame where it belongs, and that’s on us. We are the yahoos who do this, not Californians or Texans.

It’s also true that no government agency will act unless we complain.

So when there’s an opportunity to participate in planning for what the agency calls “travel management,” we need to get involved.

I was one of the volunteers who worked several summers to help restore the battered landscape once called Carnage Canyon. The work was rewarding, as all improvements were better than what was there, but volunteers shouldn’t have to be called in to clean everything up.

Federal agencies need to be better protectors of the public lands they manage for us. And when we see rampant abuse, we need to blow the whistle to protect the lands we all own.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Opposition to Elk Creek Fire Cistrict consolidation

The Elk Creek Fire District consolidation question is not ready for prime time, and needs more discussion before being on the ballot. Consolidation is a very complex idea that was developed with a façade of public involvement. Questionnaires that requested public input were general questions.

The public now has to study numerous websites and references to try to determine specifics; like where will be the nearest ambulance service origination point, or what is the overall budgetary effect, or how much will my property taxes increase? How does this improve the already excellent service?

The public will be voting based on a trusted friend, or from comments on social media. Not on clear data. Voters don’t know how much their property taxes will increase. The calculator that proponents recommend does not even include the 34% underlying property valuation increase in the total tax increase; it presents monthly costs, instead of annual costs, to make the increase appear small. Nearly doubling of the 2024 individual property tax liability is the best I can determine. A better option would have been to delay the consolidation question until next year when the effects of the 2024 property valuations are known, and until after the General Assembly has made an effort to reduce property tax increases (Proposition HH is a non-starter that takes away our TABOR refunds).

Consolidation cannot be undone once it is approved, and voting and hoping for the best is a poor strategy. There are too many unknowns currently, and waiting another year would answer many of those questions. That is why I am voting NO on 7D, 7E, and 7F. Gary Fisk, Pine Why we say “yes” to consolidation

Because the same person who said that leads an anti-consolidation organization that appears to be attempting to trick the community into voting “No” for the upcoming ballot initiatives regarding fire-department consolidation. SOUTH TURKEY CREEK – The couple was getting ready to turn in on the night of Sep. 20 when “five or six” loud “popping” noises harshed their mellow. Investigating, Husband found three small holes in the cover of their outdoor jacuzzi and notified JCSO. Deputies determined that they were, indeed, bullet holes made by a small caliber firearm. The projectiles penetrated the cover’s fabric sheath and lodged tight in the thick Styrofoam layer beneath, preventing damage to the spa below. A careful examination of the area yielded no helpful leads, and officers holstered the case pending additional evidence.

SOUTH JEFFCO – A few days earlier, she told deputies, the “large man” across the road had deliberately “scraped and scratched” her car, even though he could plainly see her standing right there observing his crime. She hadn’t immediately reported the vandalism because the large man and his wife are “hot heads” who “scare me.” Curiously, officers could detect neither scrapes nor scratches on her vehicle.

SOUTH JEFFCO – Among the trees, shrubs and flowers in Poppy’s back yard there stands a permanent Comcast telecommunications installation. According to Poppy, she’s provided Comcast with a key to unlock her back gate, and has asked that any technician accessing the installation first notify her of that intention. Early one recent afternoon Poppy heard loud and insistent knocking at her door, but wasn’t immediately available to answer it. By the time she was free to engage visitors, she discovered a Comcast technician already hard at work in her back yard. Feeling that Comcast had violated the spirit of their informal treaty, Poppy told the workman to beat it, which he did.

She next examined the back gate area decided the fence was leaning at a new and unacceptable angle. Poppy summoned JCSO deputies and asked them to document the estimated $500-worth of damage she believed the technician had inflicted on her fence. Although officers quickly identified a 4-inch by 4-inch wooden fence post that didn’t seem to be holding up its end of the bargain, they couldn’t connect the fence’s listless lurch to any specific factor. EVERGREEN – Bluto likes to use the recreation center facilities. Bluto has a payment plan that the recreation center accepts. For reasons known only to Bluto, he uses the facilities without activating the plan.

After letting him slide a couple of times, on the morning of Sep. 18 district employees tactfully suggested he formalize the relationship. Bluto was incensed, accusing the district of not “helping me” become a member. Employee assured him she would provide whatever assistance she could. That wasn’t good enough for Bluto, who dialed up the volume, brought down the language, and finally stormed out with the words “I’ll

shoot you!” Employee didn’t necessarily believe that Bluto would shoot her, but she did believe that he was going to be a persistent problem and asked deputies to charge him with harassment. Bluto wasn’t answering his phone when officers called, but they left him a message to the effect that he’d worn out his welcome at the rec center and had a confirmed reservation to use the facilities at the Taj Mahal.

Stephanie Penney

June 4, 1948 - October 11, 2023

Stephanie Anne Penney, devoted wife, loving mother and adoring grandmother slipped away silently and peacefully to be held in God’s hands on October 11th, 2023 in the presence of her immediate family in Evergreen, Colorado. Stephanie fought Parkinson’s disease for the last several years, but the disease finally took her from her loving husband, family and friends.

Stephanie flew out to Colorado for the Academy’s “June Week” in 1967, the two fell in love and knew they would be spending a loving lifetime together.

In October 1968, She moved to Colorado Springs where they could be closer together, secured a job with Ampex Corp. and the two enjoyed a fun social life there and into John’s graduation and commissioning on June 3rd, 1970.

Stephanie was born on June 4th, 1948 in Olympia, Washington to Hugh L. and Miriam R. Mickelson. In her early years, the family moved to Sacramento, California where Stephanie went through her Elementary and High School years. Her contagious smile and vibrant personality won her the adoration of so many of her classmates and dear friends who have remained so all the way up into her 75th year. She was active in numerous school activities including The Latin Club, GAA Bacchants of Euripides, A’Cappella, and volunteered as a “Candy Striper”, to learn basic nursing. Upon graduation from Burbank High School, Stephanie set her sights on furthering her education at Sacramento City College, and softened any financial impacts by working as a clerk at the Sacramento Sky Ranch, a local flight school.

John’s Air Force assignments dictated where her domiciles would be and after their twin daughters, Heather Renee’ and Cecily Jill Penney were born at Davis-Monthan AFB in Arizona, they were shipped off to Wheeler AFB in Hawaii where Stephanie was hoping they could settle for the rest of their lives. Wasn’t to be however, as John’s aviation commitments took him to Reno, Nevada, Englewood and finally Evergreen, Colorado.

In her high school years, Stephanie and John Penney of Elk Grove, California met, but they had yet to date. In John’s freshman year at the Air Force Academy, the two started writing letters to one another that blossomed into a budding romance. When

Stephanie loved sewing, quilting, cooking, socializing (partying with friends), and above all, raising their daughters, being the prime example of how to be the best person one could be.

She is missed so by her husband John, daughters Heather Renee’ Penney and Cecily Jill Duffield, and grandchildren, Sierra Renee’ Penney Garcia, Mercedes Alejandra Garcia and Aaron Scott Duffield.

Stephanie wanted to be interred at the Air Force Academy Cemetery. A memorial will be held at the Academy at a date to be determined, where in the future, she and John can be together until eternity.

Securing the grid

n our politically fractured country have you ever wondered if there are any issues that Democrats and Republicans can work on together for the common good of all citizens? Naturally, such an issue should benefit all citizens as stakeholders. There is such an issue currently, preserving and securing our electric grid.

The electric grid quite frankly is the lifeblood of our society. Modern conveniences that we all enjoy from the internet to basic utilities are possible because of the electric grid operating. When I state that it must be preserved and secured that is because life in Colorado is pretty darn good and it should remain that way.

Any disaster whether man-made like hacking or deliberate sabotage can cause the grid to go down. Naturerelated problems like solar flares

could accomplish the same thing. Regardless if the grid does go down the results would be calamitous. Life as we know it in 2023 Colorado would come to a halt. An illustration might serve this problem best.

Columnist Imagine the inconvenience you suffer from a three or four halt to power. Now imagine the same inconvenience if it lasts weeks, months or even permanently.

Here is the good news. This problem is very much fixable. Comparatively speaking it does not even cost that much money to accomplish.

and local governments can achieve that vital goal easily, especially with private-sector partnerships.

Rural areas of our state are remote they are a greater risk for calamity than urban areas from the grid going down. The solution for those rural areas would be microgrids that operate in small areas. Larger urban areas need to have their part of the grid secured so that it does not go down regardless of what event may bring strain to the grid. Regardless of where you reside in Colorado grid security is important. In an age where hostile intent is an unfortunate reality of modern life preserving and securing the grid is important. This should be a non-partisan issue since everyone benefits from the grid. The grid I may note is one of those hidden blessings in modern life that accomplishes many things

in a quiet manner.

If the grid is so important for everyone may I suggest a bit of citizen action? Write to your legislators and to Gov. Polis urging them to take action to save our grid. Do not forget to inform local government officials like County Commissioners, Mayors and City Councils. Make sure state and local officials finish the job re: the grid. Write to the Public Service Commission asking them for more information about this crucially important subject for all of us. Finally, tell your friends and neighbors about the grid and why it needs to be secured and saved. Urge them to get involved for everyone’s sake. This is something that is important for all of Colorado.

ou could call pumpkins an important symbol of autumn.

The minute September rolls around, pumpkin appears in every food imaginable from pumpkin-spice lattes to soups to pumpkin cereal. Huge cartons of pumpkins arrive in stores as we prepare for fall holidays.

But what do we know about pumpkins? How long have they been growing? Do they have other uses than decorations and pie? Why are some pumpkins different from the orange pumpkins we carved as children?

Here’s your chance to learn more about the orange — and sometimes white and even teal — gourds.

Bitter beginnings

The pumpkin began as a tiny fruit — yes, pumpkins are fruits — as long as 7,500 to 10,000 years ago in Mexico and Central America, according to Jennifer Ackerfield, head curator of natural history collections at the Denver Botanic Gardens.

The original fruit from the Cucurbita family, which is Latin for gourd, was tiny, hard and round, nothing like today’s pumpkins, and the plants were stinky. Historians hypothesize that the fruits were eaten by woolly mammoths, Ackerfield said, and there were six indigenous species, with one species growing now in the Denver Botanic Gardens’ York Street location.

Halloween pumpkins are specifically bred for size, shape and the pumpkin-wall thickness, so they make better jack-o’-lanterns, according to Eric Hammond, CSU Extension director for Adams County.

“Recently there has been a lot more interest in unique shapes, sizes and textures, even those with warty textures,” Hammond said.

“Interestingly, the funky varieties are old-time varieties. We wouldn’t call them heirloom pumpkins, but it’s in a similar vein.”

He said pumpkins, like many fruits and vegetables, have a wide genetic diversity, and some plant breeders look for that.

“Sometimes they find wild varieties that are attractive, and they cross-breed them to get desirable traits,” Hammond said.

He said nowadays, people are looking for unusual-looking pumpkins, and growers are happy to take advantage of the demand for them.

“Unusual-looking pumpkins have always been there,” he said. “It’s just there wasn’t a demand for them until recently.”

If you want your pumpkins to last a lot longer and you are not carving them into jack-o’-lanterns, wipe them with a diluted bleach solution, which kills microbes, and the pumpkins will last a lot longer, Hammond said.

He advised people to compost their pumpkins after they have outlived their decorative purpose rather than throwing them away, so they don’t add to landfill waste.

• The Pumpkin Capital of the World is Morton, Illinois, which is the home of Libby’s pumpkin industry. About 12,300 acres of pumpkins are grown yearly in Illinois, the most of any state, and more than 1.5 billion pounds of pumpkins are grown yearly in the United States, according to the Farmers’ Almanac.

• Pumpkins were once considered a remedy for freckles and snakebites, the almanac said, and settlers cut the flesh into strips, dried them and used them to weave mats.

• Native Americans grew and ate pumpkins and their seeds long before the Pilgrims reached North America. Pilgrims learned how to grow and prepare pumpkins from the Native Americans. Pumpkin was most likely served at the first Thanksgiving feast in 1621, the almanac said.

• The earliest pumpkin pie made in America was different from today’s pumpkin pie. Pilgrims and early settlers made pumpkin pie by hollowing out a pumpkin, filling the shell with milk, honey and spices, and baking it, the almanac said.

• Each pumpkin has about 500 seeds, and there are 45 varieties of pumpkins, according to Good Housekeeping magazine.

• The first jack-o’-lanterns weren’t made from pumpkins. Instead, the Irish carved faces in turnips, and Ackerfield called them very scary looking. When Irish immigrants moved to America, they found pumpkins more suitable.

• Christopher Columbus brought pumpkin seeds, along with corn and potatoes, back to Europe, the almanac said.

“Clean Energy Innovators: NREL People Working to Change the World” by Ernie Tucker

Scientists and researchers aren’t simply nerds.

They lead full lives outside of the laboratory, and Ernie Tucker of Evergreen decided to highlight that by profiling them, their lives and their passion for their work. The profiles have turned into a book, and Tucker hopes to inspire others to enter science professions by telling people’s stories.

In addition, “Clean Energy Innovators: NREL People Working to Change the World” provides a history of NREL — National Renewable Energy Laboratory — in Golden and the evolution of clean energy.

“Researchers aren’t just nerds in white lab coats,” Tucker said. “They volunteer, and they have great lives outside of their research. The profiles incorporate how they found their passions and weave in for readers the story of who these people were and how they accomplished their work. All of these are amazing tales.”

He likened the researchers to walking into Hogwarts 2.0 — ”wizards of technology doing their stuff.”

The book also includes examples of researchers who came from reservations, refugee camps, Iron Curtain countries and other places to further NREL’s clean-energy mission.

Because they are so good in their fields of study, no one stopped to ask them how they found their research passion, Tucker explained. When he found out about one researcher’s outside interests, he felt compelled to write. Then there was another and another.

Jeffco School Board Election Questionnaire: Michelle Applegate, District 3 What in your background makes you qualified for office?

I have the breadth and depth of experience, in both a personal and professional capacity, that uniquely qualifies me to serve on the Jeffco School Board. I am a mom of three in the district, ranging from preschool to high school. My oldest is my stepson, and I have the good fortune of becoming close friends with his mom who is a Kindergarten teacher at a Jeffco Title I school. Through her I have learned much about what teachers experi-

ence in the classroom today.

I have been volunteering in our Jeffco schools for over a decade with a combined 6 years as PTA president at both Title I and non-Title I elementary schools. My career in engineering and public policy, as well as my current role as co-chair of a policy governance board, has given me the experienced leadership to bring stakeholders to the table, build collaboration, and manage large budgets. Above all, I am a passionate advocate for public education, and I am excited

for the opportunity to serve my community on the Jeffco school board.

We have to get creative.

Let’s replicate what is working well across the district and standardize where we can to minimize cost and maximize opportunities to learn from each other. We

should consider community partnerships, grant opportunities through community foundations that can support STEM Labs, technology, additional programming, support for our educators, and enrichment activities. We must ensure strong, thriving public schools across our county, and by keeping a focus on high-quality resources for all core content, as well as hiring and retaining high-quality educators, we set a foundation that allows us to seek out those creative funding sources.

Jeffco School Board Election Questionnaire: Thomas Wicke, District 3 What in your background makes you qualified for office?

I have strong roots in the Jeffco school community. My family moved to Jefferson County eight years ago and lives and breathes education. My wife Laurel has been a proud and award-winning Jeffco Public Schools educator for many years. Two of my children are Jeffco graduates, and my third child is a current Jeffco student.

As an educator, husband of an educator and father to 3 inquisitive kids, I have been actively involved in our schools – volunteering and leveraging my experience and expertise to support education and advocate for the academic welfare of all students. I am proud to serve as a campus president of Concorde Career College.

As president, I’ve consistently achieved high job placement

rates over 90% annually for the college’s healthcare program in a highly impacted community. I bring deep practical experience with demonstrated results in turning several failing institutions around. periences while saving money?

To be successful in improving our student’s learning experiences, we should increase classroom and administrative assistance for teachers.

I’ve heard from many educators who are frustrated by the lack of support they receive for discipline and duties outside of their core instructional responsibilities. We need to actively involve families and empower them to participate in their children’s education. We should be creating consistency across curricula, instructional materials, and teacher professional development. Lastly, we need to implement intensive tutoring and other interventions for students at the first sign of struggles and provide support for mental health issues adversely affecting learning.

We need to provide our students with the education and skills to achieve their own goals, and utilize funds entrusted to us by taxpayers judiciously. Our budget should be scrutinized to meet those requirements. Jeffco has a general fund budget deficit of $7.1 million in 2024, $20 million in 2025 and $38.8 million in 2026. This is unsustainable and damages public trust. We need to accelerate improvements in the district’s financial management processes and systems to make transparent linkages between activities, costs, and outcomes for our children. We must prioritize funding for efforts with the greatest impact on student outcomes and eliminate expenses where programs have demonstrated unsuccessful in improving results.

I have a degree in Secondary Social Studies Education from the University of Maryland. with over 18 years of experience in public schools and community focused non-profits. Currently I’m in my fourth year on school and district accountability committees in Jefferson County and have served for 7 years as an ex officio board member as

part of my current professional work responsibilities.

I am a parent to two Jefferson county students, with 6 years in the Jefferson County School community and 11 years remaining until my youngest graduates from high school. I have invested significant time and energy into supporting our Jeffco Public Schools schools and students and am ready to continue my service as a member of the Jeffco school board.

In addition to closing schools to accommodate declining enrollments in Jefferson County, what other measures do you propose to improve students’ learning experiences while saving money?

To increase the efficiency of the taxpayer dollars that are allocated from the state to fund our schools, I would advocate for the responsible and efficient use of technology, support sites and applications to gather and disseminate information. I

believe that we can increase utilization of community partnerships for immersive learning experiences. We can focus on reducing costs associated with teacher turnover by attracting and retaining the highly qualified teachers we need and have in our district already.

I’d advocate in favor of funding special education resources to avoid legal costs associated with not meeting legal requirements in individualized education plans.

I am a father to a Jeffco Public Schools graduate and a current senior at Wheat Ridge High School. Our oldest daughter graduated from Jefferson Junior/Senior High School in the spring and started college this fall.

We have lived in Jefferson County for eighteen years.

My wife Hillary started her education career as a paraprofessional at Lumberg Elementary and now is a pre-

school director in Littleton.

I have served on the Lumberg Elementary PTA, Jefferson Jr/Sr High School Accountability Committee (SAC), Jeffco Public Schools District Accountability Committee (DAC), and Gifted Education State Advisory Committee. Evergreen sophomore crowned Colorado Karting Tour champ Inside Jesse Dorkin’s lifelong need for speed, love of Bandimere Speedway

Jesse Dorkin was 9 years old when he discovered his love for racing. But even before that, he loved anything that could roll, rev-up or burn rubber. From an early fixation with the movie “Cars” to adoring Formula One heroes on TV, it was clear Dorkin had found something special in motorsports.

“Ever since he was so young, he liked all the Hot Wheels cars, Thomas the Tank Engine … everything he played with had wheels,” said Jodi Dorkin, his mother. “It was amazing to think how he started like that and how it came to this.”

It’s been a long journey from his ninth birthday, where he tried Action Karting’s outdoor go-kart racetrack at Bandimere Speedway for the first time. That first toe-dip into racing would snowball into an unrelenting passion.

After years of honing his skills, Dorkin, now a 16-year-old sophomore at Evergreen High School, was crowned as the Colorado Karting Tour champ last month.

It comes at the apparent end of an era in Front Range racing. Bandimere Speedway’s tenure in Morrison is expected to end this month, and no new location has been announced yet. But Dorkin put his stamp on one of the speedway’s final events.

Posting a score of 1,478 points, accumulated over eight different races at four tracks around the state between May and September, Dorkin won his first state championship in the 206 Junior 2 class at Action Karting — where his dream began.

The final race took place Sept. 23.

Dorkin finished second with 213 points – enough to secure his place as champion of the season.

es over the years, but still remembers what it was like to first get behind the wheel as a kid.

“It was pretty (much a) natural interest,” he said. “My family doesn’t really have a background in racing or in engineering whatsoever. I tried it for the first time and I immediately got addicted to the speed and just the sheer skill that it took, even in those rental karts. That original enjoyment was from the speed and satisfaction I got from just being by myself and having control of my performance.”

Even though it doesn’t look like football or baseball, where multiple people take to the field to tackle a common goal, racing is still a team sport. A cluster of people direct and advise in the background while one trooper, or driver, goes to battle on track. Dorkin always wanted to be that trooper.

It didn’t hurt that his first mentor was James Michael Sullivan, a more than 10-time state champion and multiple-time national champion.

The two met at Action Karting, a hub for these sorts of encounters.

“Our first-ever practice day, he basically said, ‘You have the skills. It’s just going to take a lot of work to get there,’” Dorkin said. “Once I discovered that I had those talents, I was in the seat every Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. And we hopped in every race I could. And even with a limited budget and finding a go-kart on Craigslist, I was still at the front (of races), which eventually turned into my first win. It turned into, ‘Wow. I can really do something here.’”

But more than just competing on the track, Dorkin’s interest in racing has branched into engineering as well, something his mother approves of.

“It’s very cool to watch, and it’s also sparked different interests in his head,” she said. “And the great people he’s working with in engineering; how it’s fostering different ways of how he wants to look at things and fix things … he has all his remote-controlled cars in the basement, and he’s constantly working and fine-tuning and so it’s actually trickling into other things. So now we’re trying to expand on that and

see where we can take that, with or without racing, into his upper education years.”

Currently, Dorkin has support from brands like MGM Chassis, AEM Karting, Coyote Motorsports, and others. He explained these aren’t exactly financial sponsors, but the companies provide immediate feedback and consultation if he runs into issues on the track.

He called them “trackside backing,” which is a positive step toward turning racing into a lucrative career.

You want brands looking at you early, he said.

Colorado Community Media sat down with Dorkin to learn more about his love for racing, his emotions about Bandimere closing this month, and where his racing career goes from here.

Colorado Community Media: Can you explain how or why Bandimere and Action Karting mean so much to you and others in Colorado?

races that Action Karting held. So, a lot of my career has actually been formed at this one track. That track holds a lot of history for me and a lot of other people in the state as well.

To my best knowledge, most of the racers in the state are in that Morrison, Evergreen, North Denver area.

So, this is everybody’s main track.

I’m 20 minutes away from Action.

The second-closest (track), at IMI Motorsports, is an hour away. So, it’s turning into a minor inconvenience in terms of travel time, but a major inconvenience in comfortability. That’s just where I’ve been, where I’ve grown up. We’re all a family, as big as we are, at Colorado Karting Tour. Having (Bandimere and Action Karting) go away sort of takes away the main house we all meet at, if that makes sense.

CCM: What impact(s) do you think Bandimere and Action Karting closing will have on the Colorado racing scene?

JD: Bandimere and Action Karting attract a majority (of racers in the state). We have about 150 to 200 drivers racing across all classes.

There’s a lot of uncertainty around Bandimere for all of us. We all have a love for it and the people that work for Action Karting and Bandimere. It’s emotional for me, it’s

someone new. There’s always going to be someone better. So my motivator is to keep pushing because I know I can extract more from myself. There’s motivation in so many different categories, whether it’s to achieve better rankings in racing or just to try and expand more knowledge on a different career like engineering, which is also an interest.

CCM: What’s next for you in your racing journey? What is the new unreasonable pressure you’ve put on yourself?

Paralyzed woman summits Colorado’s highest peak

In a matter of minutes, Chris Shively Layne went from being a lifelong athlete with a long list of hikes to tackle to thinking she would never hike again.

Layne was ecstatic when her 17-year-old son invited her on his birthday hike. It’s not every day that a teenager invites his mom to hang out with him and his friends. Yet, that sunny day in October 2016 started off like a dream and ended like a nightmare.

Seven steps into her hike, Layne lost her footing in Clear Creek Canyon. She fell 80 feet. On his birthday, her son had to assume the role of first responder.

“My son ran down to get me. He said that when he got there he checked my pulse and could not find one, and I was not breathing,” Layne said.

She eventually regained consciousness and realized she had raised her right arm during the fall, protecting her head from what would have been an extreme impact with a boulder.

Layne looked around and realized that she had landed on the only pile of leaves in the area, cushioning her fall.

“I began to move my body … and immediately realized I could not move my legs. It was at that moment I realized I was paralyzed,” Layne said.

From that day on, Layne would spend the rest of her life paralyzed from the chest down.

Fast forward years later, Layne eventually found her way back to recreation. On Sep. 10, she summited

the highest peak in Colorado, Mount Elbert.

With the assistance of 51 volunteers and a trail rider, a mobility device that uses a single wheel to help navigate narrow trails, Layne made it to the top of the 14,438-foot peak. Having been paralyzed for nearly seven years now, Shivley said she would have never imagined that she could climb another 14er.

“I thought I’d never hike again — never mind summit the highest peak in Colorado,” Layne said. “There’s no way I would have achieved this goal without the help of The Lockwood Foundation and these volunteers.”

Layne’s path back to recreation began when she heard about The Lockwood Foundation through two of her friends that had also summited Mt. Elbert with the organization. One had cerebral palsy, and the other had Lou Gehrig’s disease, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. The organization’s goal is to get a person living with a different disability to summit Mt. Elbert each year.

The Lockwood Foundation and Layne got in touch and set a goal to get a person in a wheelchair due to a spinal cord injury to summit the highest peak in Colorado.

The team with the Lockwood Foundation set up camp at 11,700 feet to prepare for the summit bid. With a 5:45 a.m. start time, the team was back by the afternoon.

The adventure also included camping, an activity that Layne had not had the opportunity to do in nine years.

“It was my first 14er and my first time camping in 9 years, and it was the day of the first snow, making things more magical,” Layne said.

“I got to be on top of the world again,” Layne added.

Layne remains on a mission to shed light on accessible recreation to prove people with mobility issues have opportunities to recreate. These days she said her motto is “get up and get rolling.”

Save Elk Creek Fire believes consolidation proponents are using fear to get residents to vote for consolidation.

“This is an emotional appeal as opposed to a rational appeal,” Chuck Newby, a member of Save Alex Nicks of Evergreen considers Patagonia one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

His coffee table book “Portrait of Patagonia - Futaleufú, Chile” is a combination of stories and photos from that area of South America. Nicks, a videographer and professional kayaker, wanted to capture the essence of Chilean Patagonia.

Nicks said the valley has become easier to access, and the town and region are now tourist destinations. The photos he took show the magnificent scenery and provide portraits of the people living there. Nicks and Liz McGregor shared the writing duties.
