Editor’s note: This is the first of two stories looking at the proposal to consolidate the Inter-Canyon, Elk Creek and North Fork fire departments.

This story looks at the history of the proposal and facts about the departments. The story in the Oct 26 issue will focus on specific issues regarding consolidation.

EPRD asks voters for property-tax extension

The Evergreen Park & Recreation District is asking voters on Nov. 7 to approve a property-tax extension — called Ballot Issue 6C — that will pay for projects listed in its strategic plan expected to be approved on Oct. 26.

If the measure fails, the owner of a house valued at $750,000 will save about $90 a year in property taxes. If the measure is successful, property owners will continue to pay that tax to the district.

The property-tax extension would generate about $1.3 million a year in additional revenue for the district.

extend property taxes from a bond that will be paid off in 2025. That money was used to buy land adjacent to Buchanan Park, so the district wouldn’t lose it to development.

A few people have expressed concern about the uncertainty of how much property taxes will increase in 2024. First, property-value assessments have increased as much as 35% this year, and second, the statewide Proposition HH, if approved by voters, will affect property tax bills.

Others have been concerned about the projects listed in the proposed strategic plan, saying there is not a direct connection between some of the projects listed there and the survey the rec district board conducted of district residents.

Community meetings have shown that groups have diverse ideas on the types of programs and amenities the rec district could provide.

Proponents of the 6C say that while not everyone agrees on how the money should be spent, everyone should be able to agree that any improvements help Evergreen as a community.

“This (property-tax extension) is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Peter Jacobson, who is leading an effort to get 6C passed. “We need to take the macro view. This is for the community.”

Jacobson, who served on the rec district board from 1994-2006, said despite the uncertainty of property taxes, 6C will lock in additional revenue for the rec district for years.

Matt Buzas, who along with his family has created the Evergreen Skatepark Coalition, also supports 6C. “The skatepark, pickleball, tennis, a dog park — all of those are positive individual threads that will become part of the blanket” that includes everything the rec district has to offer, Buzas said. “When you look at the dollar amount that (property owners) are already paying, it’s worth taking a chance on EPRD.” Proponents also point to the Evergreen Lake North Trail, which the rec district supervised, and it was completed earlier than projected and on budget. Proponents say the rec district will be good stewards of the money.

Opponents disagree. They say while consolidation may be good for the Inter-Canyon and North Fork fire districts, it will dilute the emergency services that Elk Creek residents now receive while they fund about two-thirds of the new department.

Voters in all three districts will be asked to decide in November whether the fire departments should consolidate. Each fire district will have two consolidation-related questions on the Nov. 7 ballot, which should be mailed to voters in mid-October.

One asks whether the three fire districts should consolidate and the other asks whether the fire districts may increase property taxes to 16 mills — both to have taxpayers throughout the entire new district pay the same amount of taxes and to help fund consolidation.

Voters must approve all six ballot questions for consolidation to take place.

• The Conifer Fire District would be 400 square miles with about 24,000 residents.

• Elk Creek Fire Protection District covers 98 square miles and has 17,000 residents. It has 12 paid firefighters/EMTs and four fire stations.

• Inter-Canyon Fire Protection District covers 52 square miles and has 5,250 residents. It has three paid firefighters/EMTs and five fire stations.

• North Fork Fire Rescue District covers 240 square miles with most of it Forest Service land and has 1,700 residents. It has two paid firefighters/EMTs and three fire stations.

Each department has about 30 volunteer firefighters and EMTs. Under the consolidation plan, within about three years, a station in each of the current fire districts would be staffed 24/7, which would mean hiring 18 additional full-time paid firefighters. In addition, the consolidated department would continue to recruit and train volunteers.

Officials at the three fire districts have discussed the possibility of consolidating for more than three years. Indian Hills Fire Rescue was part of the discussion until it backed out over a year ago.

The three fire districts hired a consultant to look at the feasibility of consolidation, and after the results said consolidation made sense, the fire districts hired another consultant to help with an education campaign to residents in all three dis-

tricts.

If all six ballot measures are successful, the Conifer Fire District will officially form on Jan. 1, 2024. Fire officials said the transition to one large fire department would take several years.

Plans call for the fire boards that govern the three districts, each with five board members, to move toward one board of five members to govern the Conifer Fire District.

Center Stage celebrates its centennial Building is a theatrical mainstay in Evergreen

Evergreen is enamored with Center Stage.

The historic theater on Fireweed Drive in Evergreen, which is celebrating its centennial this year, has a unique charm that enchants performers and the public alike. It is one of the things that drew Graham Anduri to Evergreen to become executive director of Ovation West Performing Arts, the theater’s owner.

“There seems to be a kind of community sense of magic about (the building),” said Anduri, who became executive director in January. “It’s easy to see why that is, but it’s diffi-

cult to explain in words. You have to experience it and feel the ambience.”

History is prevalent everywhere you look in the building.

“From the posters on the wall to the old style of construction, the thick beams and bolts that hold the place together,” Anduri said. “The bones of the place are still plain to see. You can see the decades of productions that have been done here.”

Early history

The Center Stage building is part of the Evergreen Conference Center, which is a designated historic district by the National Register of Historic Places. The conference center, which includes 23 structures, served as a music camp for decades starting in the late 1800s.

in 1924 by local carpenter and stone mason John Spence, and its construction and architectural features reflect how buildings in Evergreen were constructed more than a century ago, according to area historian Richard Scudder.

In 1990, Evergreen Chorale, the precursor to Ovation West, began renting the Center Stage space. The theater had wooden benches and a wooden platform that could be used as a stage, Scudder said.

“It was pretty basic,” he said.

“When Chorale took over, it got a hold of some theater seats, which made a huge difference in terms of comfort.”

Frank Plaut, who joined Evergreen Chorale in 1976, told the Canyon Courier in a previous story about the Chorale’s history: “There was no plumbing, no heat, no lobby, no

green room. If we were in rehearsals or performances, we brought in portable toilets. We brought in construction heaters, and people came in parkas.”

Then the renovations began: lobby and restrooms in 1992, patios in 1993, orchestra pit and costume storage in 1994, green room and dressing rooms in 1995, theater seating and a new lighting system in 1997, gardens in 1998 and a 1,200-squarefoot lobby in 2004.

Evergreen Chorale finally bought the property in 2009 and recently remodeled the lobby. Plaut figures the group has put more than $1 million into refurbishing the building.

“There’s an energy to old theaters and something special about that,” Anduri said. “You can’t replicate it in new construction.”

Haunted?

Anduri wonders if the building might be haunted in a good way. He said performers have had funky experiences with the lights.

“All of a sudden, the stage lights start flickering and nobody is in the lighting booth,” he said. “Whoever it is, it’s a friendly ghost.”

He said one of his favorite things to do is to sit in the empty theater to allow the creative muses to come.

“All of a sudden, I just get ideas,” he said. “Things come to me if I give myself the time. I just bask in the energy of this place. My meditation is sitting in a silent theater.”

Center Stage is filled with dark nooks and crannies, Scudder added.

Several rooms below the main floor are used for costumes.

“If any place would be haunted,” Scudder said, “those costume rooms would be it.”

Moving forward

With Evergreen Children’s Chorale, children’s acting camps, Evergreen Chorale and other groups using the theater space, Center Stage hosts performers of all ages.

intensively for 50 years, “ Scudder said. “It has been a place where kids get a chance to grow up and learn about musical theater and music through Evergreen Children’s Chorale and then pursue it as adults.”

The building’s historic character outweighs not having all of the technological bells and whistles.

“Center Stage doesn’t have all of the capabilities that a larger Denver Center for Performing Arts theater has, but it has character to it,” Anduri said. “People come back again and again to see plays and concerts.”

Center Stage is a magical place, Anduri said.

“It’s been a mainstay in the theat-

rical and musical community in the foothills for its whole life,” Anduri noted. “It’s one of the only facilities of its kind in a pretty large radius.

This really has stood apart as far as the type of place it is, and the venue it offers to people.”

Center Stage, Scudder added, “is part of the life of the community.”

Shouting erupts at Elk Creek Fire board meeting Community member calls for Newby’s resignation; Newby says he won’t resign

The Elk Creek Fire board meeting turned into a shouting match between a community member and board member Chuck Newby over Newby’s 3. efforts to stop Elk Creek from consolidating with two neighboring fire departments.

Community member Melissa Winefeldt, whose husband is an Elk Creek . firefighter, called for Newby’s resignation during the first public comment period of the Oct. 12 meeting. If he didn’t resign, she said, then the fire board should amend the bylaws, so it has recourse when a board member doesn’t follow them.

Newby objected to being singled out, saying any negative comments about him were out of line and slanderous.

Newby said personal attacks weren’t allowed under Robert’s Rules of Order, and he said repeatedly that he would not resign.

Winefeldt’s comments centered around the consolidation effort by the Elk Creek, North Fork and Inter-Canyon fire departments that will be on the November ballots for voters in all three districts. Newby, who voted against putting the consolidation questions on the Elk Creek ballot, is also part of an Issues Committee called Save Elk Creek Fire that is against consolidation.

Over the last several months, Newby called for Elk Creek not to be part

of consolidation because he said it would dilute Elk Creek’s emergency response to its constituents, would be financially irresponsible and most of the consolidation decisions had been done in secret. These issues are being explained by Save Elk Creek Fire.

Proponents have said consolidation would be good for everyone living in the combined Conifer Fire District because of more stations staffed 24/7, better response times to emergencies and more.

At the last several board meetings, speakers during the public comment portion of the meetings have spoken passionately on both sides of the issue.

The Oct. 12 board meeting is the last one before the Nov. 7 election.

Winefeldt said Newby’s efforts to inform voters about Save Elk Creek Fire’s stance violated the fire department’s bylaws on board member conduct.

She quoted five sections of the bylaws that she believed Newby had violated, including, “Once the board has voted on an issue, the directors shall not take any actions which would create barriers or otherwise impede the district’s ability to implement the board’s decision.”

Newby countered: “This is no place for personal attacks. She is attacking me personally. … She must sit down.”

Board President Greg Pixley took a brief recess to confer with the fire board’s attorney, returning a few minutes later to say he did not believe Winefeldt’s comments were a direct attack on Newby.

“As a public citizen, she has the right to provide her concerns over her perception of behavior” of board members. “This is not at you directly,” Pixley told Newby. “This is behavior she sees

of a board member.”

Newby countered: “She was OK before she named my name. When she talked about (fire board) director behavior in general … it could apply to any director. When she named my name, she was out of order. … She does not have an opportunity to slander me.

This is not fact; this is (her) opinion.”

Winefeldt said Newby was slandering the fire department through Save Elk Creek Fire.

During the second public comment portion of the meeting, Winefeldt spoke again, this time flanked by about 18 people in the audience, some of whom are Elk Creek firefighters.

She said complaints were being filed with the Secretary of State’s office regarding potential violations of the Colorado Campaign Finance Law regarding two groups, Conifer and South Evergreen Community Committee and Concerned Citizens of Conifer, alleging that both groups have campaigned against the consolidation ballot issues without filing the proper paperwork with the state. Newby is involved with both groups, she said.

Both complaints are listed on the state’s TRACER website.

Winefeldt also has filed a complaint with the Secretary of State’s office over Save Elk Creek Fire using the Elk Creek Fire District’s logo on its campaign materials, and this complaint also is listed on the TRACER website.

“Mr. Newby is a disgrace to the fire service and a detriment to this fire district,” Winefeldt said.

“How long are you willing to allow this to go on?” she asked the fire board.

“I hope not much longer.”

Newby called the group “despicable” for their statements about him.

Authors explain their writing passion at the literary festival

The Rocky Mountain Literary Festival is a match made in heaven for book lovers and authors who want to spend a day discussing stories, writing and inspiration.

The ninth annual festival on Oct. 7, sponsored by Bootstraps Inc., has a twofold mission: to talk about books, especially the importance of literature in culture and education, and to support Bootstraps Inc.’s mission to provide scholarships to students attending college or trade school.

The nonprofit Bootstraps has been providing scholarships and interestfree loans for continuing education to mountain-area students with financial need since 1945. Since the inception of the Rocky Mountain Literary Festival, proceeds from the event have funded about $50,000 in scholarships.

Bootstraps executive director, said scholarship applicants write four essays, and the recipients were excellent writers whose essays captured the minds and hearts of the selec-

tion committee. Tullis was this year’s luncheon speaker.

The first festival in 2015 was started by a group of mountain-area residents with a passion for reading, literature and community. Evergreen has long supported artists in fine art, music and theater. This event added the art of the written word to that list.

The five authors at the festival at Mount Vernon Canyon Club are selected by a committee of eight to 10 volunteers who read more than 30 books, rating them to determine which authors will be good for the festival.

“The authors are so different from each other,” Henry said of this year’s festival. “They are so different and unique. This is so entertaining.”

Authors at this year’s festival were: • Ash Davidson’s debut novel, “Damnation Spring,” is a portrait of a family whose bonds are tested and a community clinging to a vanishing way of life in a Pacific Northwest logging town.

• EJ Levy’s novel, “The Cape Doctor,” is the story of one man’s journey from penniless Irish man to one of

most celebrated and accomplished figures of his time.

• Dan Hampton is one of the most decorated fighter pilots since the Vietnam War. His latest work, “Valor,” is the story of an American hero who survived the fall of the Philippines and brutal captivity under the Japanese.

• Megan Kate Nelson’s new book, “Saving Yellowstone: Exploration and Preservation in Reconstruction America,“ was published in March 2022, the 150th anniversary of the Yellowstone Act, which created the first national park in the world.

• Master of ceremonies Melissa Payne is the author of four novels, including “A Light in the Forest” and “The Night of Many Endings.” Payne was a featured author at last year’s Rocky Mountain Literary Festival.

Payne, a Conifer resident, said the foothills were lucky to have a literary festival with a wonderful way for authors to showcase their work and for book lovers to learn more about authors’ writing.

“We are in such a creativity-rich area,” she said.

Proponents believe the three fire districts are stronger together, and

a consolidated department would be more successful as the number of calls increase, the population ages and volunteerism nationwide is waning.

“This is about neighbors helping neighbors,” said Elk Creek paramedic Bethany Urban, a member of the A Safer Conifer committee and a firefighter union member.

She added that a larger fire department would be eligible for more grants, and it would have a larger voice in the county and the state to advocate for help.

Living life to the fullest

“L

onesome Dove” is one of the rare stories that played well both in its original novel form and in film, in this case, a TV series. The success of the latter was due in large part to the brilliant acting by Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones. They perfectly captured and portrayed the essential character of the protagonists, complementing and contrasting the other in the way author Larry McMurtry created them. Both men were noble, pure in spirit and serious about life, facing it head-on but with totally opposite natures. Augustus McCrae (Duvall) celebrated life and would not allow challenges, disappointments, and even tragedy to de-sway him from his live-lifeto-the-fullest attitude. Woodrow Call (Jones), on the other hand, was deadly serious, task-directed and taciturn to a fault. A smile would have cracked if not shattered his visage.

Beyond the scope of that adventure, set in the Old West that is now fodder for lore and legend, the two primary characters serve as models — archetypes — for men to this day. For my part, men like Woodrow drive me nuts

with their rigidly uptight focus on moral strictures and life’s practical side. Guys like Augustus — Gus — are far more appealing to hang with due to their elan, their spirit of life. Their philosophy is that life Columnist is not only to be lived but to be enjoyed and celebrated.

I have aspired and tried to live my life the Gus way, albeit with serious lapses. Looking back on the periods during which I dawdled, even struggled, I realize I wasted a lot of time. That’s not to say time spent feeling down, blue, or melancholy isn’t justified or needed.

But opting to stay in such times for prolonged stretches not only drains the spirit, it also wastes the most important human resources: Time and Attention. With the grains of sand in my hourglass of life now dwindled to a precious few, I’ve decided I’ve no time to waste. My intention hereon is to push pell-mell into Augustus territory. If my fate is to look down at my toes at my last breath, I hope

that I have the strength of character to echo Gus’s last sentiment with a smile: “It’s been a hell of a party.”

But what did Gus mean by that?

Was his life filled with partying or was his life a party? Of course, it’s the latter, which forces us to reconsider and eschew our general definition of party. For Gus, a party wasn’t a short-term, narrowly focused occasion for frivolity and celebration. Instead, it was living a life that held that every moment was one to celebrate.

In “Lonesome Dove,” there were plenty of sad, sober, even tragic scenes that were hardly celebratory. But sadness and tragedy are part of life. Still, that reality doesn’t—shouldn’t—negate the idea that life ought to be celebrated. That includes times when that extra heaping of doo-doo is piled upon your plate, so much so that it topples over.

When that happens, it ought to simply tell you that you have quite a mess to clean up. Of course, that’s easier said than done.

There’s no “Mucking through the Dung for Dummies” guidebook to reference nor a magic wand to make the tough times go better.

Rather, we need to find or devise

ways to help ourselves through the muddle. For me, that includes hiking, skiing, gardening, reading, writing, and getting with friends.

When reading about or listening to another’s personal tale, I am far more interested in the stories within a person’s story along with their whys and wherefores rather than a this-and-that litany of their deeds.

Imagine Woodrow and Augustus writing their memoirs. In all likelihood, Woodrow’s would read like a laundry list of things he did and accomplished, places he went to, and names of important people he met along the way.

Augustus’s tale would be much different in style and content: It would be an engaging if not gripping tale of exploits and interesting characters who were his companions during those adventures.

Think about which tale would put you to sleep and which keep your rapt attention. Then consider how you’d like your life story be told when you’re six feet under or ashes to the wind.

The Evergreen Park & Recreation District built the Lake House in 1992 with funding from savings and with grants from the Colorado Lottery and Open Space. In so doing, EPRD raised the bar for public improvements for us citizens.

Over the next two decades, citizens showed their approval by voting YES to help preserve land in Noble Meadow and purchase all the land at Buchanan Park. EPRD built a new Rec Center there and bought the land at Stagecoach Park. They built ballfields throughout the community.

Over time EPRD made improvements to Wulf Rec Center and built the giant turf field at Marshdale. They built playgrounds, gardens and trails for the benefit of all of us. The list is long.

In 2018 EPRD put forward a bond question to ask for more funding for maintenance and capital projects. That Bond was narrowly defeated and the funding was denied.

And now EPRD is asking once more. This request in 2023 in significantly smaller than in 2018. It is a request for an extension of the mil levy voters approved in 2005, rather than a bond question to issue new debt. It will fund taking care of what we have, improvements to existing facilities, and then

new facilities and programs.

The tax impact to households would be less than $90 per year for a $750,000. home. The equivalent of a nice dinner out (but only for two).

Our recreation facilities are aging, either from constant use or the ravages of nature. EPRD needs funds to fix them. Our parks and trails need improving by bringing them up to standards that meet current regulations and the high expectations of our citizens.

Our community is asking for more capital improvements in both outdoor and indoor recreation. EPRD is listening and plans to respond in the affirmative.

EPRD board and staff share a vision with their constituents for the future of Evergreen recreation, which they would like to fulfill. Everyone will benefit. This will take time. But the time is now for what must be fixed today and in the immediate future.

A vote yes on 6C would help EPRD right away, allow it to make steady, planned improvements in the near future, and eventually provide funding for larger capital projects.

Jeffco school board candidates address district’s critical needs

With ballots set to hit Jefferson County mailboxes soon, the five candidates running for two open school board seats are busy letting the public know where they stand on the district’s critical issues, like declining enrollment, teacher pay, student achievement and budget shortfalls.

Michelle Applegate and Thomas Wicke are vying for the District 3 seat, which covers portions of Wheat Ridge, Arvada and northern Lakewood and stretches northwest to the Gilpin County line. Incumbent Stephanie Schooley is not running for re-election.

Amara Hildebrand, Erin Kenworthy, and Joel Newton are running for the open District 4 seat, which includes Edgewater and central and southern

Lakewood. Incumbent Susan Miller also chose not to run for re-election.

The Jefferson County Education Association endorsed Applegate and Kenworthy as leaders who will “do what it takes to give our students, educators, and community members the best public school experience possible.”

Wicke and Hildebrand have the support of the Jefferson County Republican Party. which believes they “will stand up for your children and family in these difficult and confusing times.”

School board candidates are elected at large, meaning Jeffco voters can vote for both districts, regardless of where they live. Yet, the elected directors represent constituents in the district in which they reside.

School board races are non-partisan. Yet, after voters recalled a conser-

vative board in 2015, they’ve consistently voted for members backed by the teacher’s union. This year’s race won’t change the majority but will add diverse, new perspectives.

About the District 3 candidates

Michelle Applegate is a mom to three children in Jeffco schools and the PTA president at Stober Elementary. She calls herself a lifelong public education supporter whose top three priorities are ensuring Jeffco has strong, thriving public schools, making safety a part of the student experience, and building trust through budget transparency.

Applegate said that if elected, she would start with student achievement by replicating what’s working across the district and understanding what students, families, teachers and the community need. She also plans to

use her work experience as an engineer to enhance collaboration among district stakeholders and that parent engagement, feedback and hearing from the community are essential to making informed decisions.

She said the board needs to consider more than salaries when recruiting, compensating, and retaining its teachers. Enhanced benefits, additional prep time, and mental health services could show how much the district values its educators.

Regarding student achievement, she said education and success amount to more than standardized test scores and wants to look at the impact of things like art and P.E. and understand the unique learning that happens in all the different schools.

CONIFER – Alerted to a purportedly armed and angry customer terrorizing the tire store, arriving deputies were greeted on the morning of Sep. 11 by the suspect himself. “Are you here for the dog incident?” Angry asked. Clearly lacking essential background, officers interviewed everybody in sight and soon learned that the current crisis was instigated by an impertinent pet. It seems that Angry was patiently awaiting his vehicle when he was joined in the lounge by a fellow patron and her pup. When the inquisitive animal approached Angry, he bade its owner to restrain the beast, unwittingly unleashing Patron’s protective proclivities. A savage war of nasty words ensued, drawing the attention of store personnel, who came a-running just in time to observe Angry

EVERGREEN – To discourage people from using his assigned parking space, Walter put a cone in front of it. Convinced that Walter obtained the assigned parking space “by fraudulent means,” on the morning of Sep. 11 Jack took it upon himself to remove the cone from the parking space and place it on Walter’s patio.

Catching Jack in the act, Walter hit Jack “with a folding chair.” Building management backed up Walter’s claim to the space, Jack declined to press assault charges against Walter, and deputies moved on to their next assignment.

CONIFER – Isabella Amati had music in her soul, a fine instrument in her hands, a hungry violin case at her feet, and a ticked off store manager in her face. It was the afternoon of Sep. 13, and not the first time Manager had told Isabella to take her etudes elsewhere. Trouble was, Isabella was no more fluent in English than deputies were in Lingua Italiana, and she seemed genuinely puzzled as to why she couldn’t ply her bow in the grocery store parking lot. Deputies explained that it was private property and asked Isabella if she understood, which “she clearly did not.” Hoping for better luck via a visual medium, an officer produced a “satellite view map” of the environs

was kind enough to find her friend, Marisol, a job at the same location, which was apparently the limit of her benevolent patronage. On the evening of Sep. 11, Marisol mistakenly “put onions on a burrito that had requested no onions.” According to Marisol, Juanita “started to scream and me and insult me.” Marisol screamed back, telling Juanita that “you can’t speak to me like that” and “I won’t tolerate it.” Holding in one hand a pair of scissors she’d been using to “open a package of tortillas,” Juanita approached Marisol aggressively and took a swing at her with the other hand, “grazing” Marisol’s chin. Marisol complained to her manager, saying she couldn’t possibly work in such an “abusive” environment. NO PLACE LIKE HOME Local high school graduates find unique brotherhood on Mines football team

ack Walters wasn’t planning to play college football.

Now, he plays for the

reigning NCAA Division II National Runner-Up, practically down the street from where he grew up.

A three-sport athlete for Golden High School, Walters hoped one of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference universities would recruit him during his senior year. Once Colorado School of Mines reached out and offered him a scholarship, he knew that’s where he belonged.

“Growing up in Golden, Mines is just in our backyard,” Walters said. “ …

I knew I wasn’t going to pass up on it. It’s a great

academic school, and (has) some of the best football in the country.”

Walters is one of about 30 players from the Denver metro area on the Mines football team, helping spur the Orediggers toward their firstever national title.

Because many of them played against each other in high school, the local Orediggers have a unique bond, Walters and Pomona High School graduate Billy Pospisil III described.

The players sometimes dish out good-hearted “smack talk,” they said,

and share stories about opponents or coaches they had in common.

Walters explained how those similar experiences can make things easier when meeting new players on recruiting visits or at camps.

That’s something Valor Christian High School graduates Jackson Zimmerman and Carter Forsythe can attest to. The two played together at VCHS, and when Forsythe visited the Mines campus, Zimmerman — who was a freshman cornerback for the Orediggers — showed him around.

Forsythe, now a redshirt freshman linebacker, said seeing Zimmerman find success at Mines was one of the reasons he decided to join too. Another was the program’s culture, and how similar it was to Valor Christian’s, he continued, adding how there are now six VCHS alumni among the Orediggers.

“Mines’ culture is already so fantastic,” Forsythe said, “ … (and) Jackson made it an easy decision.”

Another benefit of playing so close to home, they described, was how frequently they get to see their loved ones at the games. They said their family members, former teammates and coaches, family friends and others from the Valor Christian community show up to support them at the games.

Pospisil, who played wide receiver at Washington State University and grad-transferred to Mines in fall 2022, commented how grateful he was to be back home. He believed attending a local college was “underrated,” and that some high school students might overlook it as an option.

“But, coming back after being away, there’s really not much that beats it,” Pospisil continued. “ … It’s been a great ride ever since.”

Where nerds win

Despite attending different high schools, the four players said their experiences helped prepare them for everything they’d face at Mines.

Walters said Golden’s football team struggled his freshman and sophomore years, but a new head coach and a change in culture propelled the program to new heights.

“It taught us what it was like to be in a winning program,” he continued.

That was something Zimmerman found very early at Valor Christian.

The redshirt sophomore cornerback said he wasn’t planning to play high school football, clarifying that he went to Valor Christian for its academics. But he ended up “falling in love” with the game and the program’s culture.

Despite having six head coaches since starting high school, he said he’s been drawn to programs “where, no matter who the coach is … you’re going to have a great brotherhood around you.”

Zimmerman and Forsythe described how Valor Christian and Mines have similar cultures centered on brotherhood and trust. And for both programs, that’s translated into winning records, Forsythe added.

“Winning isn’t everything,” he continued.

“But it’s definitely a byproduct of the hard work we put in here (at Mines) and the chemistry we have.” #HelluvaEngineer

The Orediggers aren’t just facing tough situations on the field, but in the classroom as well.

The players must learn to balance athletics with their classes in engineering, computer science and similar subjects.

Pospisil, who’s pursuing a master’s degree in environmental engineering science, said the Orediggers face a “truly unique situation” as far as college football goes.

“School is tough, but it’s going to be tough when you’re doing any one of these majors,” Pospisil continued. “But when you’re done,

you’re set up for life. I think in the receiver’s room, the average starting salary in the last five years is close to $100,000 now.”

While Pospisil was unsure if he’d return to Mines next year, Walters plans to use his final year of eligibility in fall 2024 and pursue a master’s degree in engineering & technology management.

Walters is currently studying mechanical engineering, which he said he didn’t know much about when he first started at Mines. But he’s enjoyed becoming a proverbial jack-of-all-trades, studying everything from construction to technology consulting.

“It’s really hard, but I like it,” he said. “ … If I was telling my high school self if I should come to Mines, I’d say do it 100%.”

‘The perfect fit’

While there’s been plenty of adversity to overcome both on and off the field, Walters had no regrets about coming to Mines. He said the university and the football program have taught him “how to grow up.”

“You don’t really know how hard school and football can be,” he said, adding that because of that adversity he’s now forged bonds with his fellow Orediggers that’ll likely endure all their lives.

Those planning to attend college shouldn’t be afraid to stay local, Walters said. While he always wanted to go to an out-of-state college, he described how Mines “is such a special place you can’t get anywhere else in the country.”

Pospisil felt the university deserved more national recognition for its academic prowess.

When he graduated from Washington State with an engineering-related degree, he knew Mines would be the “perfect fit.” “‘Where can I go play some great football and get a great education?’” he continued. “There’s really no better place super close to home.”

Zimmerman and Forsythe both said they were grateful to be able to represent Valor Christian and the Highlands Ranch-Littleton area on the college football stage. The two hoped their families, hometown communities and the Denver area would continue to support them as the Orediggers hope to end 2023 holding a trophy.

“It’s really cool to just see the support,” Zimmerman said, “and see everyone come together in Golden.”

Safety first EFR’s Health and Safety Day provides informative fun

Safety is fun.

That’s the way Einar Jensen, Evergreen Fire/Rescue risk reduction coordinator, described Evergreen Fire/Rescue’s Health and Safety Day on Oct. 7. Jensen, who organized the day-long event, said his goal was to teach adults and children alike about all aspects of protecting themselves and their homes with fun activities, information tables — and pancakes.

While children rode their bikes and climbed on trucks, families took rides on a ladder truck, and adults learned about everything from hardening their homes in case of wildfire to cardiopulmonary resuscitation to using the Nymbl app that helps reduce falls, Jeffco Communities That Care and more.

Children were wide-eyed over the fire trucks everywhere and the snow plows from Clear Creek Road & Bridge, enjoying touching them.

Some might wonder why snow plows were at Health and Safety Day. Jensen was quick to point out that if

plow drivers didn’t clear roads, people couldn’t get places safely, and emergency responders wouldn’t get to help people during snowstorms.

Evergreen Fire/Rescue serves the eastern part of Clear Creek County.

Steve Denbow, who operates a road grader on the Brook Forest Road route, was happy to help children get into his massive vehicle.

“Our annual open house is where we empower our community to learn more skills and information to protect themselves and their families more effectively,” Jensen said.

“This is an opportunity to learn about other organizations committed to risk reduction.”

Katie and James Hixson of Evergreen came to Health and Safety Day with their children, Lila and Hayes, and grandparents Gary and Debbie Cole, who were visiting from Florida.

They enjoyed visiting the booths.

“We love being part of this community and learning more about resources available to us. We also get to know the folks who keep us safe,” Katie said.

Madelyn Penrose, 2, loves fire trucks, so the family drove from Centennial to check out Evergreen Fire/Rescue’s offerings. Madelyn ran from truck to truck, touching the tires and looking up in awe at the im-

mense vehicles.

“She is obsessed with fire trucks,” mom Sydney Penrose said. “She’s been watching (the) Blippi (television show), and he went to a fire station.”

That ignited — so to speak — the family’s desire to see what Evergreen Fire/Rescue had to offer.

Jefferson County Communities That Care — a coalition of 31 organizations — had a table to explain to attendees the steps it takes to encourage youth safety on all levels from mental health to substanceuse prevention and more.

Other organizations included Wild Aware, which works to curb wildlifehuman interactions, Car Seats Colorado, which is implemented both by the Inter-Canyon and Clear Creek fire departments to ensure parents know how to install car seats properly, Jeffco Open Space, Safe2Tell, Centura Health, Mountain Youth Network, Envision Martial Arts, Rotary Wildfire Ready and more.

Jensen, who joined Evergreen Fire/Rescue in October 2022 after 14 years as a risk reduction specialist for South Metro Fire Rescue, said he was grateful to be at EFR because of its commitment to community risk reduction before, during and after incidents, adding: “We are showing the public we are committed to their safety.”

listening to people and letting that be a part of the data that’s coming in is truly important,” said Applegate in response to school closure decisions.

Thomas Wicke is the father of a Jeffco freshman and two graduates. His wife teaches at Drake Middle School, and he serves as the Aurora campus president of Concorde Career College.

He says he is also a champion of public education and believes the school board needs to clear the way for educators to do their jobs effectively.

Wicke’s priorities are to restore trust between parents and educators in the district through transparent, open and proactive communication, address budget challenges, and improve student achievement. Wicke says he’ll use his experience managing the bottom line of a for-profit college to manage the district’s $1.4 billion budget and deal with monetary challenges to come.

“I’ve heard the reason we’re losing staff isn’t necessarily because of the bottom line of money, although that is an element that I’m very interested and concerned with. We need to keep our teachers because they enjoy what they’re doing and feel like they’re teaching. I’ve heard stories of teachers not having support for discipline in the classroom,” he said.

Wicke believes in listening to opposing views and understands there will be disagreements, especially when making hard decisions about school closures and budget choices. “Our parents need to understand the decisions being made so we can trust one another and move past the contention and division.”

About the District 4 candidates

Amara Hildebrand has two children, one in a public school and the other in a private school. She attributes her education as the factor that led her family out of poverty and believes in giving back to the community. She says she is running for a school board seat because education is the path to success, and every child deserves the opportunity to thrive.

Hildebrand believes in financially incentivizing teachers whose students show academic achievement and that some capital improvements are wants, not needs, meaning the district’s budget could be better managed to support teachers.

While she has dealt with her own addiction issues in the past, she doesn’t believe schools need more counselors

but that kids should get off their devices and devote time to community service projects.

“We all have perspectives based on our experiences, and no one is right or wrong,” she said. “We need to listen, respect each other, and keep our students in the middle.”

Erin Kenworthy is a former public school teacher who comes from a long line of teachers. She left her public school teaching role because she couldn’t afford to live and work in the community where she taught, but she continues to teach in other roles.

Kenworthy says schools are there to meet students where they are and support their needs and interests, from apprenticeships to career and college readiness. The district must attract and retain highly qualified educators with competitive pay to accomplish that goal.

“As a former educator, it’s imperative that we treat our educational professionals as professionals. They deserve fair compensation and healthy, safe, supportive, and balanced work environments,” Kenworthy said.

It’s also important to her that educators learn culturally relevant, traumainformed practices in approaching students who may be responding to a situation or stimuli based on things they have not experienced in that school or are not immediately attached to that situation.

Joel Newton has lived in Jeffco for 18 years and believes he has a responsibility to make the community better. He started Edgewater Collective to support local Title I schools to build community partnerships so those students, families, and educators have what they need to succeed.

“We can’t sugarcoat tough decisions, and we need to educate the community about our priorities,” he said.

“The budget priority process starts at the schools. These conversations have to start in December, and we need to keep what’s best for our students at the center.”

To solve some of the issues around the cost of living in Jeffco, Newton suggested looking for community partnerships for low-cost housing opportunities and other creative solutions for the district’s staff to live and work in the community.

“With education, there are a lot of things we can disagree on, neighborhood vs. charter schools or whatever it might be,” said Newton. “But I am firmly committed to listening and seeking to understand where every stakeholder in Jeffco is coming from because as we do that as a board, we find the common good.”

Inside a softball coach’s bucket-list season at Conifer High School Oletski notches 200 wins, beats longtime rival in 15th season

In 2007, Carrie Oletski was a “JV third-level coach” at Conifer High School. But things changed quickly when the varsity head coach moved on.

The athletic director wanted Oletski’s opinion on who should be the next head coach. She didn’t have an answer, but her reputation on the team apparently preceded her.

“He turned and he said, ‘Put your hand out,’” Oletski said. “And I put my hand out, and he said, ‘Okay, you’re the new coach.’”

They shook hands. “‘The parents have already talked about it and want you as the head coach,’” the athletic director added.

“So, that’s how I got the job.”

Oletski hadn’t even put her hat in the ring but was chosen nonetheless. The parents and athletic director seemed to have made the right choice. Oletski, in her first season, led the Lobos to state. The team beat Pueblo South in the first game but later lost to Wheat Ridge.

Ever since then, Oletski has continued to stack the wins. Yet Wheat Ridge’s Farmers have been a constant thorn in her side – bringing a string of losses for 15 years.

Finally, on Oct. 3, Conifer beat them.

The elusive win was like the icing on top of an already-sweet season marking a milestone. It came four games after Oletski’s 200th career victory that itself was a burner – an explosive 17-6 win over Palisade on Sept. 23.

To reach 200 wins is something Oletski said was always on her bucket list.

“I didn’t think it was possible, I’m going to be honest with you,” Oletski said. “There’s a couple more still on my bucket list that I’d like to finish up, but I’ve always tried to have the girls strive for a goal for some-

thing. Back then I said, ‘You know what, if I don’t strive for a goal, then I’m not going to be the best coach I can be and the best coach for these girls.’”

So, that’s one bucket list item down. But a few games later, Oletski had another opportunity to check another off with the victory over Wheat Ridge, which also gave Oletski a win over every 4A Jeffco League team.

To achieve the milestones with this particular group was special, partly because elements of her coaching past live on in her current players.

“There’s a couple girls on the team … I had coached their older sisters, and they’re also the youngest, so it’s kind of the last time,” Oletski said.

“I’ve seen girls grow. This group, they’re just fun. They just want to learn. They came in as freshmen because I had a big senior class when they came in, and they worked their tails off. They’ve just kept together.”

Even lifelong rivalries couldn’t thwart the team’s chemistry. Three players on the Lobos are from Evergreen, because the high school doesn’t have a program this year.

Usually, this would cause friction, or the players would be seen as foreign invaders. But that’s not the case at Conifer, and her players have been more than accepting.

“The most enjoyable thing is … you wouldn’t even know where those Evergreen kids are [on the field],” she said. “And that made me a lot more happy that they were able to do that. You don’t want your rival to play with you, but you know what? They are, so what are we gonna do?”

It’s been an up-and-down year for Conifer so far. The Lobos are currently sitting at 13-9, 4-3 in league play, and face a 5-15 Kennedy today at 4 p.m.

Oletski said many of the losses come down to “too many errors here, one incomplete inning there”, and the like. But moving into postseason play, she’s confident the Logos can rally for a late push.

“I think we’re now hitting our stride, because we’re finally hitting,” Oletski said. “So I think go-

MONTROSE - Four years ago, Noah Richmond witnessed Montrose golfer Micah Stangebye win the Class 4A state golf tournament at The Bridges.

Richmond, who looked up to Stangebye, found himself emulating his hero at this year’s tournament — which also happened to be at The Bridges. The Montrose senior went on a tear on the front nine, shooting a 7-under-par 28 — including five birdies and an eagle.

Richmond found himself in first place after coming into the day in 10th place after shooting a 74 yesterday. He finished his round with a 65, giving him a total score of 139 which was two strokes better than Evergreen golfers Liam Houlihan and Tyler Long who both shot 141.

“I was just trying to get back into it,” Richmond said of his performance on the front nine. “I’m a chaser so I knew coming into today I could do it. I just had to believe in myself. Once I started getting it going, I said to myself, ‘Keep going, keep going.’ I just made the best of what I had.

”Thankfully today, everything worked out.”

Montrose coach Steve Skiff credited Richmond’s knowledge with the course, as well as his relaxed approach to the sport in helping him secure the title.

“When Noah plays relaxed and aggressive, he plays some amazing golf,” Skiff said. “That’s what he did today. He got off to a great start.”

Evergreen won the team title with a total score of 440. It’s the first-ever state golf championship for the Cougars.

“We had a good group of guys,” Evergreen coach Brad Garrett said.

“I’m glad to be a part of this state championship team. It’s a result of all their work and passion for the game. They played great this year.”

Grand Junction came in second (446) while Riverdale Ridge placed third (447). Rounding out the top five are Windsor which took fourth (452) and Cheyenne Mountain in fifth (454).

The Cougars won in part due to Houlihan and Long finishing tied for second place. Lincoln Mackay shot a 158 which was good for a tie in 28th and Luke Sabina finished tied for 46th after finishing with an

There was a three-way tie for 10th as Lutheran golfer Joey Garofalo, Riverdale Ridge’s Will Balliet and Kellen Ball of Windsor all shot 149.

Meanwhile, Richmond joins former teammate Jordan Jennings, who won in 2020, and Stangebye, who secured the title twice, as Montrose golfers to win an individual state championship.

“I always looked up to Micah,” Richmond said. “I saw his aspect of the golf game. I just went ‘OK, I can do that. I can push myself to that level.’ … It was cool to see (Jennings) win (the individual title), too. I saw what it takes to win.”

Garrett said all four of his golfers had success this season with Houlihan and Long getting in the groove at the state tournament.

“That’s the beauty of golf because sometimes guys are hot and sometimes guys are not so hot,” Garrett said. “So this week, Tyler and Liam were very hot in finishing high in the individual ranking. But our two other guys, Lincoln and Luke, played great golf all year long to get us here. It was an awesome experience watching them all season long.”

Houlihan carded a 70 during the first round which gave him the lead while Long was one stroke back with a 71. The pair swapped scores on Tuesday as Houlihan and Long both finished their final round with five birdies Houlihan was the only golfer to shoot below par on day one of the tournament as he was 1-under. The conditions proved tough as the weather was cold, rainy and windy.

Garrett said his team being able to weather the storm best was a big reason why the Cougars won the state title.

Partial sets of Bidding Documents will not be available from the Issuing Office. Neither Owner nor Engineer will be responsible for full or partial sets of Bidding Documents, including addenda, if any, obtained from sources other than the Issuing Office.

A mandatory pre-bid conference for the Project will be held on October 24th, 2023 at 1:00 pm at the Roxborough Water and Sanitation District Water Treatment Plant, 8383 Waterton Road, Littleton, CO 80125. Bids will not be accepted from Bidders that do not attend the mandatory pre-bid conference.

Bid security in the amount of five (5) percent of the total Bid Price must accompany each Bid and shall be furnished in accordance with the Instruction to Bidders.

Bidders must be licensed to do business in the State of Colorado. Bids received from Bidders who are not recorded by the Issuing Office as having received the Bidding Documents will not be opened.

The Owner reserves the right to award the contract by sections, or reject any or all Bids, and to waive any informalities and irregularities therein.
