The elegant, historic Hiwan Museum in Evergreen was the perfect backdrop for Christmas Tea.
Hosted by the Evergreen Mountain Area Historical Society, the tea was an opportunity for friends to get together in a unique setting and for the society to show off the museum decked out for the holidays, find new members and raise funds.

effort,” said Elaine Hayden, the historical society’s president. Members created the menu, made the food and served it.
The menu consisted of scones with orange marmalade and Chantilly cream, Christmas salad, ham salad sandwiches, cucumber sandwiches, cranberry brie puff pastry and desserts: butter cookies dipped in chocolate, snowflake cookies and yule log cakes. And, of course, tea.
More than 100 people attended the three seatings on Dec. 5 and 6, and Hayden said the organization didn’t have to advertise the event this year because of both word of mouth and

ness.
What she didn’t know is on the day selected for the official dunking, the winds were howling with temperatures in the mid-30s.
Students took part in a PTA fundraiser called Raise Craze where they asked for donations from friends and family based on acts of kindness. By the end, students with the help of some business sponsors raised $21,148 by per-
forming 1,228 acts of kindness.
Classes that raised the most money played dodgeball against the staff, and a trophy will be displayed in Susan Bergkamp’s classroom because her classes raised the most money.
The PTA will use the money to purchase cubbies to place outside the cafeteria and a new router for technology classes, for teacher grants and student scholarships, and to fund PTA-sponsored events.
Halingstad’s icy dunking took place during the school’s three lunch periods with one teacher and three students having a try
during each period. Students left the cafeteria and headed outside, each getting an ice cream treat before watching the frigid festivities.
Halingstad was clad in a wetsuit, and to keep warm between her dunk tank adventures, she wore a hat, bathrobe and heavy coat. She also sipped on hot coffee.
Halingstad smiled when she said she was doing this for the students, though she hoped the karma gods would take pity on her.
Students were excited to watch the antics, cheering loudly when Halingstad wound up in the water.
Language arts teacher Stephen Matschullat and instrumental music teacher Laura Sarché, who missed when they attempted to dunk the principal, each sprinted to the dunk tank, pressed the target and watched her fall.
When a couple students asked if the water was cold, Halingstad playfully kicked water in their direction. The students decided the water was definitely chilly.
After her final turn in the dunk tank, as Halingstad was sprinting back to the school building, she noted, “I’m going home to take a hot shower.”

It was all smiles at Our Lady of the Pines Catholic Church on Dec. 10, and the reason was cookies. Lots and lots of cookies.
The annual Cookie Walk brought

out hundreds of people to fill bags, tins and platters with cookies of every kind imaginable — everything from beautifully decorated sugar cookies to macroons, chocolate chip, peanut butter, peppermint mocha, butter cookies and more. There are about 200 varieties baked by church parishioners, and each baker is asked to bake 10 dozen of each equating to about 24,000 homemade cookies in one room at one time. There were also jams, breads, candy, other goodies and the church’s cookbook.
The Cookie Walk started in 2004, and some volunteers have been
New Year New Plans
Resolution Season is finally upon us. As we attempt to re-invent, re-invest, and re-charge our personal lives, let’s not forget what that means for our Estate Plans.
A New Year means a fresh start. A chance to make up ground on things we were hoping to do last time around the sun. Its extremely important to include your Estate Plans into those resolutions. Its likely this past year and the new year alike will bring change. New family members, loss of family members, financial success, financial woes, new acquisitions, and possibly a change in taxes. These changes can have a huge impact on your Estate Plans moving forward, so make sure YOU don’t leave them behind. These changes may include things like:
• Loss of a Loved One
• New Beneficiaries
• Loss of Beneficiaries
• Change in fiduciaries
• Sale or Purchase of Property
• Sale or Purchase of a Business
• Change in Ideals and Principles
Don’t let these changes negatively affect your Estate Plans. Let’s make sure we all remain on the same page. With a properly established and funded Estate Plan, we can ensure that you have the ability to give what you want, to whom you want, when you want, the way you want. During that process we can help you save money on every court cost, legal fee, professional fee, and tax fee legally possible.

baking or working at the event since its inception. It raises money for the church, and this year, according to the Rev. Tim Gaines, the church pastor, the money will be used for building maintenance projects.
In addition to the event being a local favorite, people come from down the hill to select and purchase cookies, and others stop by as they’re on their way to cut Christmas trees.
The concept is simple: Customers walk around the tables — hence the name Cookie Walk — and decide which cookies they want. Volunteers wearing holiday aprons and gloves stand behind the tables and
place cookies in bags and containers.
Each platter of cookies has a list of ingredients. There’s Christmas music playing in the background. Attendees select as many as they want of each cookie, and the cookie selections are weighed. The price is $10 per pound.
Friends Cathleen Timmons and Bambi Moss arrived early for the Cookie Walk, so they would get the best selection of cookies.
“It’s always awesome,” Moss said. “It’s fun picking out the different cookies.”
They had already decided which cookies wouldn’t make it home, figuring they needed to sample some of their purchases.
Volunteer Karin Middleton explained that experienced Cookie Walkers know to get to the church early to get the best selection, and they are looking for cookie varieties they don’t bake themselves.
“It’s a giant bake sale,” she said.
Sandy Lipina of Conifer has been remodeling her kitchen, so she doesn’t have a working oven. This year, holiday cookies are coming from the Cookie Walk.
“I used to go to something similar in Wisconsin,” Lipina said, “and then I share (the cookies) with guests and as gifts.”
Pam Heleen of Conifer had a plate of cookies wrapped by volunteer Nancy Weeks, who noted that it’s important to wrap the cookie trays well because the bakers worked hard to make the delectable treats.
Heleen said she’s been attending the Cookie Walk for years and divides up the cookies with the help of her granddaughters. Then they get on Heleen’s ATV and drop cookies off to the neighbors.
Volunteer Lisa Donahue-White, who has been baking cookies for the Cookie Walk since it started, helped serve cookies along the line, while volunteer Jennifer Collins took the empty cookie trays to be cleaned.
“They’re emptying trays like it’s nobody’s business,” Collins noted of the cookie shoppers.
As there was a lull in the crowd, Gaines looked around the parish hall.
“We sell a lot of cookies,” he said. “It’s amazing, absolutely amazing.”

JCSO officials have not determined whether Emilyon is responsible for additional burglaries, but it will work with other jurisdictions to investigate the crimes, JCSO spokeswoman Jenny Fulton said.
On Dec. 2, the Kittredge General Store, SaBella and Blackbird Café were burglarized between 11:17
and 11:27 p.m., all three with similarities: Someone gained entry by smashing glass doors, took the cash registers and left. On Nov. 2, someone used the same method to burglarize Coal Mine Dragon, Bistro Del Lago and Everbean by the Lake in the Lakepoint Center.
According to a news release, at 11:50 p.m. Dec. 2, Jeffco deputies found Emilyon parked along Highway 74 less than two miles west of Kittredge.
“Emilyon was in the driver’s seat and was taken into custody after broken glass was seen on his person, a discarded cash register was located a short distance away, and other evidence was found both inside and outside the vehicle,” the release stated.

Construction of what is now the Hiwan Museum began in 1893, and it was called Camp Neosho, according to Jefferson County Open Space. It was a former summer camp and residence of one of Colorado’s first
female doctors, Josepha Williams Douglas, and her family.
Hand built by Evergreen craftsman Jock Spence from local materials, the house grew to 25 rooms by 1918, including two octagonal towers, a chapel, formal dining room and many bedrooms, the Jeffco Open Space website said.
The Evergreen Mountain Area Historical Society has been hosting Christmas teas at the museum since 2017, Hayden said, noting that the house is a gem that people need to experience, especially during the holidays.

Still time to fill out survey on fire-department consolidation
Three fire departments on the U.S. 285 corridor are asking residents what they think about whether the departments should consolidate.
Residents can respond to the survey through Dec. 14. Each fire department — Inter-Canyon, Elk Creek and North Fork — has its own version of the survey, especially dealing with possible tax increases. To find the survey, visit the website of the fire district where you live: intercanyonfire.org, elkcreekfire.org or northforkfire.org.
The survey will be used by the departments’ leadership to decide whether there’s enough community support to move forward with exploring and eventually asking voters to decide whether the consolidation should occur and whether property taxes can be increased.
Last year, a consultant hired by the three districts determined that consolidation made sense.
The consultant, AP Triton, said in a 250-page report released by the fire departments in December 2021 that a consolidated fire district would create a regional approach to responding to emergency incidents within the new fire district boundaries, balance resources and produce shorter response times. The report, which analyzed equipment, buildings, personnel, finances, property-tax rates and more, confirmed what the chiefs believed was
true: combining their resources would allow them to provide better fire and EMS services.
The fire chiefs have said they will make a decision on whether to move forward based on the survey results. If they move forward, questions would be put to voters on the November 2023 ballot.
Questions in the survey ask about how respondents feel about their respective fire departments, whether they understand that number of volunteer firefighters is decreasing and whether the individual departments have enough money to provide adequate fire and emergency medical response services. Questions also ask what property tax increase respondents would support.
House fire in Marshdale extinguished
A home in Marshdale that burned on Dec. 8 was still smoldering the
next morning, and Evergreen Fire/ Rescue crews remained on scene to monitor the situation.
Department spokeswoman Stacee Martin said residents would see and smell smoke for several days, but they didn’t need worry.
Evergreen Fire/Rescue extinguished the house fire at Highway 73 and Thimbleberry Lane, and while no one was injured, the home was a total loss. The home owners said they lost their two dogs in the blaze. The call came in at 3 p.m.
Martin said the home was extensively involved in fire when firefighters arrived, and they were able to keep the fire from spreading to nearby homes and property. Elk Creek and Indian Hills fire departments aided in fighting the blaze.
“We were very lucky yesterday,” Martin said. “The winds were brutal.”
A small grassy area near the
house caught fire, but crews quickly put it out, she noted.
She said construction work on Highway 73 near downtown Evergreen that had the highway down to one lane made it somewhat difficult to get crews and equipment to the scene, but the first engine came from Station 3, which is in Marshdale on Highway 73 south of the home. Plus Evergreen Fire/Rescue uses a neighborhood-response method, which means the first crews to a scene live close to where incidents occur.
“We had folks there as fast as we could,” she explained, “but by the time someone saw and called us, the house was pretty much involved.”
Foothills Fire douses house fire in Chief Hosa
Foothills Fire/Rescue quickly extinguished a house fire on Upper Moss Rock Road on Dec. 5, keeping the damage to one room.
No one was home when the fire started, and no one was injured. Firefighters were able to get the fire under control quickly.
An improperly installed vent on a pellet stove caused the fire, Foothills spokesman Mike Amdur said. Foothills received mutual aid from Evergreen and Genesee fire departments.
Amdur said people need to check vents to their stoves and make sure their chimneys are clean, especially with the winter season here. He recommended following manufacturer instructions and having professionals install, inspect and maintain that type of equipment.

Op-Ed: Ten years after the Sandy Hook massacre
I
Dec. 14 marked the 10 year anniversary of the Sandy Hook massacre and as a nation, our efforts at enacting real gun legislation remain lukewarm. I have decided that is is time for me to stop being afraid to “say something.”
School shootings are at their highest on record and continue to rise. 2021 incidents totaled 35 shootings with 15 dead (12 of them children) with another 55 injured. This year, as of Oct. 31 there have been 41 school shootings. Thirty-five people have been killed, 29 of them children. And additional 88 have been injured. Looks like we are on track to best the record from 2021. What a dreadful statistic! With our recent elections, it is a perfect time to remind our elected officials of an easy way to protect our children:
push for REAL gun law reform!
On June 25, President Biden signed the bipartisan “Safer Communities Act.” Oh yes, I guess I should get all warm and fuzzy that it was bipartisan and somehow 15 senate republicans voted with 50 (all) senate democrats to pass this bill that barely begins to protect us all from gun violence. But, I am not so warm and fuzzy about it.
Our legislators are quite proud of themselves that the Act provides for “investments in our nation’s mental health system”. Well, certainly, attentiveness to mental health in the U.S. is a major issue. However, I am not sure our legislators did evidenced-based research in their conclusions that inattention to mental health care has direct correlation to school shootings or gun violence in general. As a matter of fact, a National Institutes of Health Study in 2015 showed that mental illness contributes to less than 4% of ANY violent acts in the US and the contribution to gun violence is even lower. Risk of gun violence is instead correlated with a history of violent acts within the community including domestic violence, alcohol and other drug abuse, being young and male and a history of physical or sexual abuse or trauma. While some may argue that this “violence” may just be the mask hiding a mental illness,
I would counter that these individuals are very unlikely, of their own volition, to take advantage of any expansion in mental health care that the Safer Communities Act will offer.
So what were some of the main accomplishments of the Safer Communities Act?
• It expanded background checks for gun buyers under the age of 21
• disarms convicted domestic abusers
• creates funds for community violence prevention and safer school initiatives
• “cracks down” on interstate gun trafficking and “straw” purchasing
What was notably not included?
• did not include background checks for people over age 21
• did not include a provision that wound expand background checks for all firearm sale or transfers in the country
• did not include an assault weapons ban
• did not limit large capacity magazines
• did not include a federal “red flag law”
The Safer Communities Act clearly was a huge bi-partisan accomplishment and gives me hope that sensible gun laws will continue to be passed. However, this does not mean it is time to sit back on our laurels. I encourage readers to study the specifics of the bill, including voting records of our elected officials at
https://ballotpedia.org/ Bipartisan_ Safer_Communities_Act_of_2022. So, how do we continue to advance legislation that will save lives?
Looking at firearm laws state by state reveals, what appears to me, some obvious statistics. A study by Everytown For Gun Safety clearly demonstrates that states with weak gun laws have higher rates of gun deaths, including deaths from homicides, suicides and accidental killings. This study also considered secure firearm storage and found that only 23 states had anything that approached effective requirements for storage. Maybe this is a good starting point: looking at the states that have been effective at passing bipartisan firearm legislation and pointing out to our state legislators that the two parties can come together to save lives. I encourage readers to explore this study. I think both strong Amendment 2 proponents as well as fervent believers in stronger firearm legislation like myself will find interesting information.
Let me circle back to the original intent of this essay: protecting children and preventing further loss of life from senseless gun violence. Sandy Hook Promise, a group whose aim is to protect America’s children from gun violence in honor of the precious lives that were lost on Dec. 14, 2012, believes keeping students at

fter almost 30 years as a stand-alone organization, Sculpture Evergreen will become part of Center for the Arts-Evergreen (CAE) at the first of the year. The leaders of both organizations should be commended for working together to advance the mission of creating and maintaining an active and excellent arts community in Evergreen and surrounding communities. Many organizations often get caught in the trap of being more committed to the organization itself than to the reason the organization was formed. With the energy and collaboration the merger of the organizations can and will provide, the already excellent arts environment in our area are prepared for the bar to be raised and to move on to even higher levels.Sculpture Evergreen was formed with the goal of bringing outstanding public art to Evergreen. There are now over 40 pieces in its permanent collection in addition to a very successful sculpture walk every year. Throughout Sculpture Evergreen’s existence, it has operated as a fully volunteer run organization. As it has grown, created its outstanding collection and planned future operations, the time had come for professional staff to oversee the programs. Instead of hiring its own professional staff, the advocates of sculpture in Evergreen decided that

with the economies of scale that could be realized by becoming part of CAE, resources could go toward the mission instead of for administrative expenses.
As the work traditionally done by Sculpture Evergreen transitions to CAE, steps have been taken to ensure that sculpture continues to be a priority. A sculpture committee has been established. Additionally, the proposed expansion of the CAE building just north of Bergen Park will have a sculpture garden.
There are many things that make the Evergreen community a special place to live, work and visit. An active and diverse arts community is one of them. Sculpture Evergreen has worked hard to build a portfolio of public art for people who live in and visit the area to enjoy. Its volunteers and supporters have es-
tablished the infrastructure for the continued expansion of the collection. By taking the altruistic step of passing on the program to a larger organization with more resources, this wonderful community asset can grow and move up to an even higher level.
Good work, Sculpture Evergreen! As you reflect on the work you’ve done since 1994, you can be proud of meeting your initial goals and comfortable that by passing on this important mission to CAE you’re leaving it in very good hands.
Greg Romberg had a long career in state and local government and in government relations. He represented corporate, government and trade association clients before federal, state and local governments. He lives in Evergreen with his wife, Laurie.

magine: It is mid-December and you have just read the letter your cute kindergartner has written to Santa. You run out to the store while your sweet child is at school and purchase one of the items on the top of their list. As you wrap the gift and then hide it in the closet, you smile, thinking about how excited they will be when they open the gift on Christmas day… Except you never get to see that indescribable enthusiasm on your child’s face because, instead, your child is murdered along with 19 other children and 7 adults with a Bushmaster XM 15/ AR-15 style killing machine.GUEST COLUMN Katie Perkins

One of the ways to promote this strategy is by talking to kids about the “Say Something” program espoused by Sandy Hook Promise. In 2022, death by firearms became the leading cause of death of children in the U.S. This fact has made me feel angry and hopeless. I am deciding, however, in the words of the Sandy Hook Say Something curriculum to “choose love, belief and hope instead of anger.” Write to your elected officials, talk to kids, don’t be afraid to “say something.” Give your kiddos an extra-long hug on Dec. 14.

SOUTH JEFFCO – Apprised that an enterprising young pugilist was trying to drum up some business on the sidewalk outside of a popular night spot, arriving deputies quickly identified the scrapper – one Jack Dempsey – by his brown jacket, distinctive ball cap and advanced degree of inebriation. When officers asked him why he was picking fights with strangers, Dempsey deftly turning the tables, asking JCSO deputies why they were “always hassling me?” The officers didn’t venture an opinion, but did note that, besides drunk, Dempsey was agitated and aggressive, pacing furiously and thrusting his face within inches of their own. Somewhere among a torrent of ranting profanities, he explained that he’d left a couple of video games at a shop for repairs, but had so far received only one of the games back, and it still didn’t work. He’d gone to the repair shop that evening to demand satisfaction, but they’d kicked him out, leaving him in a foul and combative humor. While sympathetic, officers pointed out that he couldn’t work his beef out on innocent club patrons, and cautioned that if he didn’t calm

down they might have to handcuff him in the public interest. Not calming down at all, Dempsey wondered how come JCSO always seems to “want to handcuff me?” With a little gentle cajolery and a lot of elbow grease, deputies managed to get Dempsey cuffed and quieted, by which process they discovered the prohibited blackjack stuck in his back pocket. Dempsey said he didn’t know there was a blackjack in his back pocket. The officers said he knew it now, and that he was under arrest for possessing an illegal weapon. Dempsey wanted to know why JCSO was “always arresting me?”
Outside the box
EL RANCHO – It was the afternoon of Nov. 18, and Light-fingered Louis was efficiently filling his cart with small items of large value. The big box home store’s security staff could guess what was coming next, and they were right at Louis’ elbow when he walked out without paying for any of it. Louis told security personnel he actually wasn’t done shopping, and had merely come outside to survey the merchandise displayed out front. They didn’t buy that for a
second and called JCSO. Louis told deputies he could “understand why they might think I was stealing, but I wasn’t.” Officers didn’t swallow Louis’ “simple misunderstanding” line any more than store security had. Deputies cited Louis for theft, and the big box banished him from the premises.

EVERGREEN – Running errands on the morning of Nov. 16, Ms, Audi pulled into the Evergreen Parkway grocery store parking lot, slid into a slot next to a Jeep Grand Cherokee, and went inside for butter and eggs. A few minutes later, Mr. Jeep came out of the store and instantly decided that Audi had parked entirely too close to his vehicle. Taking it as a teachable moment, Jeep bashed the side of Audi’s car with his door, busted out one of her rear taillights and hawked a massive loogie on her driver-side window. Jeep was long gone by the time Audi came out and discovered the destruction, but a handy witness was happy to fill her in on the details. Contacted by deputies, Jeep appeared remorseful. “I handled it completely wrong,” he admitted. Officers agreed, and cited
Jeep for criminal mischief.

EVERGREEN – A sympathetic sounding man called the restaurant with troubling news. He represented Xcel Energy, he said, and was sorry to inform the manager that a technician was en route and would shortly shut off the restaurant’s power unless several overdue bills were settled at once. He advised her to go immediately to the nearest Walgreen’s or Walmart and procure a money order covering the full amount of the alleged arrears, and then call him back for further instructions. Because the manager hadn’t come down with that morning’s flurries, she called Xcel, instead, and was told the business was paid in full and no technicians had been dispatched on her account. She reported the incident to JCSO, which opened a file and closed the case.

BY ELLIOTT WENZLER THE COLORADO SUN
Hundreds of the nation’s most elite athletes in indoor rock climbing just had their version of the Super Bowl in Denver.
As the Olympic sport expands across the U.S. and Colorado, USA Climbing’s national championship last month was a sort of homecoming. The governing body in 2018 moved from its longtime home in Boulder to new headquarters in Salt Lake City.
“We definitely wanted to have a presence back in Colorado. That’s where USA Climbing got its feet off the ground,” said Ben Lowe with USA Climbing.
Sold-out crowds at The Spot climbing gym in Denver and G1 Climbing in Broomfield cheered as climbers — a mix of past and potential Olympians — tested themselves in three disciplines: 50-foot sport-climbing routes, a speed competition and short, powerful boulder problems.
Athletes made it as far as they could on routes designed to test their strength, agility and coordination.
In the sport climbing finals, only one athlete, Sean Bailey, completed a route without falling. He reached the top to raucous applause after battling a series of angled, plastic blocks screwed into the wall. The route required him to lunge toward small plastic rock holds with the tips of his fingers, hook his heels to pull his body up and swing across the wall while hanging on by only a few fingers.
The competition marked the end of the indoor-climbing season, but also provided an opportunity for new and returning climbers to begin scoring points to qualify for next year’s national team.
Once on the national team, athletes travel the world, competing in
the International Federation of Sport Climbing’s World Cups. They also get the chance to try out for the team going to the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
A surge in popularity
Indoor climbing started as a way for climbers to train during the offseason. Now, it’s blossomed into one of the fastest-growing Olympic sports. One that Coloradans are eating up.
In 2000, there were about 150 climbing gyms in the nation. Now, there are nearly 600, according to the Climbing Business Journal.
“It’s been a pretty massive surge in popularity, not just over the past two or three years though, it’s been seeing massive growth over the past 10 years,” said Lowe, the communications director for USA Climbing.
The indoor climbing industry is firmly anchored in Colorado with dozens of gyms across the state and a host of indoor equipment manufacturers thriving along the Front Range.
“Definitely explosive (growth) here in Colorado,” said Dan Howley, founder of The Spot gyms in Boulder and Denver. The Spot has hosted several past national climbing competitions and was home to bouldering nationals at their Denver location this year.
While USA Climbing is working to grow the sport around its new Salt Lake City base, Colorado athletes and fans continue to be a big part of the sport.
“There’s always been a lot of really great athletes, especially young athletes, that have come out of
Colorado. It’s got a long history in competitive rock climbing,” Lowe said. “Whenever somebody starts climbing the ranks and we hear they’re from Colorado, that’s definitely no surprise.”
That’s in part because of Boulder’s enduring ties to the sport.
“In the last 20 years, the Boulder area is sort of the Hollywood of rock climbing,” said Jason Haas, founder of G1 Climbing, “and if you’ve wanted to make a name for yourself in rock climbing you’ve had to live here.”
Two athletes from Colorado, Brooke Raboutou, 21, of Boulder, and Colin Duffy, 18, of Broomfield, already qualified for the national team trials in March. Both participated in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but the next Olympic trials have not yet been scheduled.
Members and staff from both G1 and The Spot also competed in nationals, with at least one making finals.
While it may be a few years before USA Climbing comes

back to Colorado for nationals, both gyms say they hope to continue hosting other regional and local competitions. The Spot hosts four bouldering competitions every year and G1 hosts another. There are also USA Climbing youth, high school and collegiate competitions across the state.
Indoor versus outdoor climbing
The burgeoning sport is still at a point where fans can easily interact with the top athletes. During finals the weekend of Nov. 12, climbers battled the problems and routes set for them while spectators casually rubbed elbows with Olympians and other legends of the sport.
Nathaniel Coleman, a silver medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, was among the crowd along with Raboutou and Duffy. Kyra Condie, another Olympian, at nationals won
the bronze medal in lead climbing and was fifth in bouldering.
“It’s like going to the World Series but the local community doesn’t get to meet the star athletes in the NBA playoffs or the Super Bowl,” Haas said. “They don’t get to shake hands with Peyton Manning and have a conversation with him. But in climbing we’re still at that level where you can.”
Kyra Condie completes the first boulder during nationals at The Spot in Denver. Condie, 26, won the bronze medal in lead climbing and was fifth in bouldering. (Elliott Wenzler/The Colorado Sun)
While the sport began with a strong connection with outdoor climbing, most agree the two have started to diverge.
“A lot of the routes that are set for these pros are now incorporating gymnastic, parkour-type movements,” Howley said, “physical movement that you’re not going to find you’re able to do safely out-
side.”
Indoor climbing also offers a new, unique option for people interested in overall fitness, Lowe said.
“There’s a lot of people out there who have a hard time going into a typical gym to run on the treadmill or lift weights for a few hours,” Lowe said. “They want something they can actually actively engage with and challenge themselves not only physically but also mentally.”
Howley calls himself a “hardcore evangelist” for the sport.
“Indoor climbing has made this sport accessible and visible and popular to a larger community that maybe otherwise wouldn’t have been exposed to it, and to me that’s nothing but good,” he said. “Climbing makes people better as humans, it does so much for you. … It’s really good for the individual, it’s good for your soul and it’s food for building communities that care about each other and support each other.”
Now, USA Climbing and gym own-
ers are working to make the sport more accessible to everyone.
Haas said it’s a pivotal time to make sure the sport grows and doesn’t turn into a fad that comes and goes. He said that growth lies in accessibility to the non-rock climber.
He hopes for a day when people understand climbing like they do basketball or football.
“I should be able to turn on the television and go: who’s winning?” he said. “We have this great opportunity to show the whole world this sport and they can share it whether they physically do it as well or just spectate.”

Starting the strategic plan
Evergreen Park & Recreation District residents will have plenty of opportunities to voice their opinions on what the district should look like in the next three to five years.
Meetings, surveys, online comments and more, plus input from staff, will be used to gather information and ideas on where the district’s focus should be in providing services to residents.
“We want to reach out to the community in as many ways as possible,” Chris Dropinski, senior manager with BerryDunn, the firm hired to consult on the strategic plan, told the EPRD board on Dec. 6. “We need to get representation from all areas. The more the merrier is the way we look at it. We want to make people aware (of the strategic planning process) and then gather their input.”
Dropinski explained that once the rec district board has information about what constituents want, they can balance those ideas with other district needs, costs involved and other things the board is responsible for. The board wants to maximize services to residents while making necessary changes for safety reasons and to improve existing infrastructure.
The timeline for the plan is short; the board wants it to be completed by July so it can decide whether to ask for a bond measure in November.
“What people wanted before COVID is drastically different than what they want now,” board member Betsy Hays said. “(Board members) need to make sure we are also out in the community, and we are 100% attached to the process.”
Bids to open for Evergreen Lake North Trail
Evergreen Park & Recreation District officials were expected to open bids for the Evergreen Lake North Trail on Dec. 9.
“We couldn’t be more excited, and we’re cautiously optimistic that this will work with our budget,” said Liz Cohen, the district’s grants and strategy manager, at a board meeting on Dec. 6. “Then we go into discussions with the stakeholders to move into contract negotiations. We hope to sign a contract in early January, and then we will get a lot firmer information about the work schedule.”
The district has about $5 million, most of it from grants, to pay to construct the two-tier trail — one along Evergreen Parkway and one along the shore.
A detour will be in place for several months during construction where vehicles traveling southbound will drive along the lake, while those going northbound will travel through downtown Evergreen, onto Meadow Drive to Evergreen Parkway.
While there will be some inconveniences for the public while the trail is being built, it needs to be

done soon because the existing trail continues to fail, Executive Director Cory Vander Veen said.
EPRD promises to provide updates to the community about the project, detours and more as it progresses. Visit evergreenrecreation.com for updates.
Skating to start
Evergreen Lake should be open for skating soon.
The Evergreen Park & Recreation District will open nine acres of the lake for skating with many smaller rinks to accommodate a variety of uses. The ice was 8-10 inches thick in some places on Dec. 6, getting close to the necessary thickness to allow skating.
The historic warming hut will be used this year for skate rentals and gear storage, a change from past years.
EPRD to elect two board members in May
Election time is coming up fast. Special districts including the Evergreen Park & Recreation District will has elections on May 2. Voting for two positions on the EPRD board will be in-person, with polling places at the Wulf and Buchanan recreation centers. People who wish to get a mail-in ballot will be able to do so.
The seats held by Monty Estis and Don Rosenthal are up for election. Estis is term-limited and cannot run for the seat. Rosenthal has the op
tion to run for the position again. More information about getting self-nomination forms to run for a position will be available in January.
Revamping after-school programs
Rec district personnel are working with Evergreen elementary schools to create more robust after-school child-care programming starting in the 2022-23 school year.
With Jeffco Public Schools moving the start time for elementary schools to 7:45 a.m., that means school will end at 2:35 p.m. rather than 3:35 p.m.
“This gives us an opportunity to work with schools to create extended adventure camps and daycare,” Executive Director Cory Vander Veen told the rec district board on Dec. 6.

Similarly, Marian Schwabauer of Evergreen and Pamela Boyer of Pine hoped to learn new techniques, and participants learned from each other. Schwabauer tried stamping snowflakes on the bottom of a package she wrapped and waited for them to dry, while Boyer filled the brown paper with snowflake stamps.
Debbie Pedotto, Conifer Library’s patron experience associate, said while she was running the workshop, she was learning from attendees whom she called “the experts.”
Schwabauer said she likes to attend library programs, and this one looked like fun.
Boyer agreed.
“I’m a regular library person,” she said. “I’m not really a crafty person, and this sounded fun. It’s fun to get a couple things wrapped and under the tree early.”

This is Cyrus est. 10-12 years old, has only partial sight (cataracts in both eyes), and only partial hearing. We think there is a lot of Shih Tzu + a mix. He is about 23 pounds. Cy is pretty quiet, sleeps all night in a crate - sometimes needs to go out in the middle, gets along with other dogs and would prefer the companionship of a 4-legged friend. He climbs stairs with no problems. He is pretty good walking on a leash.

This Christmas, the Mountain Backpack Program needs your help!
Each year, we send boxes of food and grocery gift cards home with children in the Mountain Backpack Program for winter break. We are currently supporting 65 children in 11 schools and hope to make sure they all have breakfasts, lunches, and snacks for each day they are not in school over the break.
If you would like to help keep our kids’ bellies full this holiday season, please consider making a donation of funds, food, or grocery gift cards to the Mountain Backpack Program.
