Six Evergreen businesses have been burglarized between Oct. 31 and Nov. 2, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Parkside Café and Evergreen Cleaners in Bergen Park, along with Morning Star Jewelers in the Evergreen Safeway shopping center were burglarized on Halloween, while Coal Mine Dragon, Bistro Del Lago and Everbean, all in the Lakepoint Center on Upper Bear Creek Road, were burglarized on Nov. 2.

Jacki Kelley, a spokeswoman for the Jeffco Sheriff’s Office, said on Nov. 4 that investigators are not positive that all six are connected, but the method of entry is the same on all but the jewelry store burglary. Glass was broken to gain entry to the five businesses, and the perpetrators were targeting cash registers. At the jewelry store, the door was pried open, several glass jewelry cases were broken and large amounts of jewelry was stolen.

Morning Star had cameras, and the Sheriff’s Office has photos of the person who entered the store, Kelley said. The photos show that the person is totally covered except for a backpack and shoes, and she hopes

to create catapults of their own in a STEM — science, technology, engineering and math — activity.

Offerman said about a third of the students knew what a catapult was before the lesson began, and she told them they should try to shoot the candy pumpkin the farthest rather than the highest.

“I’m trying to push them out of their boundaries,” she explained.

Once the students created their designs, they built their catapults out of sticks, cups, spoons, plastic

bottle tops, string, rubber bands and tape, making changes as they went along.

Then it was time to try shooting the candy pumpkins, keeping records of the distance they flew through the air. They averaged the distances and then figured out the class average.

“How do you support the catapult so it doesn’t fall apart?” Offerman asked some students. “There needs to be some kind of support.”

Offerman said she chose a catapult for the class project because they’re fun to build and anything with pumpkins in the fall is fun.

When a team brought its data showing the pumpkin had moved 23, six, five and four inches, she asked them what caused the disparity and discussed the effects of force on the pumpkin’s flight.

“How can you change the release mechanism to make (the pumpkin) go farther?” she asked. “Can you come up with a way to make the trips more consistent?”

low the candy pumpkin to fly. They changed their minds and decided to use a rubber band instead of the string, hoping to create more force.

Benji Hutchens and Lucan Conlon experimented with creating the launch mechanism.

“Do we need a rubber band?”

Benji asked.

“No, we don’t,” Lucan responded.

Colton Langhans and Gabe Stawski had a plan. They decided to create triangles out of sticks with the help of a glue gun operated by Offerman.

“The triangles will stand up, and we will tie string to a spoon, pull it back and fling the pumpkin,” Colton explained.

Concerts entertain music lovers, support nonprofits

Over the past decade, “Boogies” concerts in Evergreen have become a popular event and a fundraising method for area nonprofits.

Originally called Boogie at the Barn, the events delight music lovers of all ages and nonprofits of all kinds. The Oct. 28 Boo-gie Bash at the Wild Game featured Something Underground, the band that played at the very first Boogie.

Since then, 32 Boogies have taken place, raising more than $160,000 for 13 causes and nonprofits such

they believe in.”

The Boogies are the brainchild of Pandora and musician John Erlandson, both real estate agents in Evergreen.

“This was really John’s idea,” Pandora said. “He is always thinking about good places for music. We really had no major long-term plans (for the concerts) when we decided to do the first one.”

John added: “I don’t know if ‘Boogie’ is cool anymore, but it kind of describes them — a bit of a dancing and hearing really good music.”

The Boogies started in the Alderfer barn on Buffalo Park Road, where the couple thought something akin to a barn dance might be fun.

Volunteers helped clear out items stored there and built a stage, and Boogie at the Barn was born.

as Evergreen Christian Outreach, Mountain Resource Center, Conifer Kiwanis reading program, Leadership Evergreen, Evergreen Public Access Defibrillation and more.

Proceeds from the October Boogie went to the Evergreen Park & Recreation District’s INSPIRE program for those with special needs. INSPIRE has been a yearly recipient of Boogie proceeds, and program coordinator Maren Schreiber is grateful for the support.

“It warms my heart,” Schreiber said. “Our program is expensive because we have to have more staff than typical camps, and a lot of the participants need scholarships.

When organizations like the Boogies do this for us, I’m so grateful at how amazing our community is to come out and have fun but support a cause

In future years, Boogies were held at The Barn at Evergreen Memorial Park, and they continue at the Wild Game with a summer Boogie at the Ranch at a private ranch on Buffalo Park Road.

The pandemic did not stop the Boogies, with virtual Boogies and the most successful Boogie ever taking place in September 2020 in the parking lot at Wild Game, raising $14,000 for INSPIRE. The events’ steering committee — known as the Boogie Brain Trust — hosts three to four Boogies per year, and it is now officially a 501(c)3 named Boogie Benefits Inc. John hopes Boogie Benefits might obtain grants to distribute even more money to area nonprofits. He also envisions more virtual Boogies.

Kicking off the holidays in Conifer CN&N’s Holiday Boutique provides great shopping, volunteer opportunities

High School’s student government, were among the high schoolers walking around the event to help vendors with anything they needed.

Sometimes they watched a booth while the vendor needed a break, or they ran errands.

The freshmen agreed that volunteering was a great way to support the large community event.

Suzie Stegemeier, a longtime Conifer Newcomers & Neighbors member, and Dave Verlinde, who was volunteering along with his wife, had greeter duty, providing new and veteran attendees with information about the boutique’s layout and how it works.

Attendees decide what they want to purchase, and they get a bill from the vendor. Then attendees go to the school lobby to pay for the merchandise and return to the vendor to pick up their items.

The checkout line works like a well-oiled machine, with all of the volunteers dressed in holiday sweaters — or at least in traditional red and green. Overseeing those volunteers were Susan Lavin and Kathy Dierks, who have had the job for 15 years.

Lavin said she attended the Holiday Boutique for years, and when she retired, she immediately joined Conifer Newcomers & Neighbors to help with the boutique.

Conifer’s 44th Holiday Boutique on Nov. 5 ushered in the holidays in the foothills with something for all ages.

The nearly 100 vendors — all selling artisan-created items — were busy as thousands traversed the rows of booths in the gymnasium and cafetorium at Conifer High School. Items ranged from holiday knickknacks to hand-painted wine glasses and handmade jewelry, to lotions and tinctures. It was apparent from the long lines at the checkout tables and from the smiling people walking out with bags of items that the boutique was its usual success.

Ye Olde Bake Shoppe with homemade goods plus food from Rocky Mountain Wraps rounded out the festive atmosphere. Conifer Newcomers & Neighbors operated another successful event.

For many events like the Holiday Boutique, it takes a village of volunteers to make it happen.

Holiday Boutique, people looked so happy,” Lavin said, “so I decided to volunteer.”

Dierks added: “It’s so much fun.

All of the items are so nice, and it’s fun to be around people.”

Lavin explained that they train the 15 volunteers — some who have been working the checkout tables for years — and then they are available to troubleshoot.

Leslie Carpenter, for example, has been volunteering at the checkout tables for 15 years, while this was Betsy Spinney’s first time as a volunteer.

Dierks called the checkout tables among the most important jobs of the boutique because the vendors deserve to be paid for their work and Conifer Newcomers & Neighbors keeps 10% of the profits, which is provided to area nonprofits.

Stegemeier enjoyed explaining the ins and outs of the Holiday Boutique to attendees and how CN&N enjoys putting on the event.

“It’s a lot of work to put it together,” she explained, “but a lot of us have been doing this for a long time.

I have made a lot of good friends (through CN&N).”

Heroes will be the theme of Conifer Christmas Parade Annual event on Sutton Road is Dec. 3

“Heroes on Parade” is the theme this year, according to event organizer Melissa Baker, and the Conifer Area Chamber of Commerce has added some incentives to encourage floats to be as creative as possible.

First-place winner will get $500 with second place receiving $200.

“We know that floats take a lot of time and effort,” Baker said. “So we’re saying, ‘We hear you,’ and we’re trying to sweeten the deal.”

She said business sponsors are available to pay the $75 fee for some parade entrants, and Nov. 30 is the deadline to be in the parade. Each year, the parade has between 30 and

A tribute to heroes will be the theme of this year’s Conifer Christmas Parade, and organizers hope for a huge turnout both in parade entries and community members.

The parade, traditionally the first Saturday in December, will start at 2 p.m. Dec. 3 on Sutton Road in Aspen Park. A more recent tradition, parade day has become a street party from 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. with bands,

80 entries, depending on the year and the weather.

Parking is available at West Jefferson Elementary, the Aspen Park RTD lot and Conifer Community Church. Free shuttles are available.

Santa will be housed in Santaland from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m., with plenty of activities for children. A corn maze and a monster truck also are planned.

Thirty crafters and artisans will be in a tent for those ready to do some holiday shopping. Plus there will be two tents with hot and adult beverages and some cocktail carts.

route. VIP passes will be available for a fee for those who want to reserve a table in a heated tent along the parade route. Weather on parade day has been great the last few years, which means Conifer is due for a chillier event soon, Baker noted, and the tent is a great and comfortable way to see the parade.

Bands on the main stage will be local favorites including the Conifer High School Jazz Band, May Be Fern, Jax Jordening and Who’s Thomas.

“This is a great kickoff to the holiday season,” Baker said.

Evergreen Holiday Walk returning to its former glory Annual event slated for Dec. 2

With the pandemic in the rearview mirror, downtown Evergreen businesses plan for the annual Holiday Walk to return with gusto.

“We’re really excited,” said Chelsea Treinen, owner of Sweetwater Boutique and on the Evergreen Downtown Business Association’s Holiday Walk event committee.

“We’re bringing everything back to pre-COVID times.”

The Holiday Walk, celebrating its 30th anniversary, is Evergreen’s traditional way to herald in the holidays with locals and visitors turning out to watch performers, drink hot chocolate, browse through stores and greet friends. It is always the first Friday in December, so Main Street will be closed from 5-9 p.m.

Dec. 2 for the festivities.

As in Holiday Walks past, Santa begins the evening with a tree lighting 5:30 p.m. at the Evergreen Lake House. After the tree is lit, Santa will be transported in a horse-drawn carriage, led by an Evergreen Fire/ Rescue truck into downtown.

Santa’s Grotto, akin to Santa’s workshop, will be set up in the downtown parking lot, and new this year, parents sign up for a time slot for their children to have that special chat with Santa by visiting downtownevergreen.com.

Santa and Mrs. Claus set up shop to talk with children at Evergreen National Bank in 2019. This year, the Clauses will have a special FILE PHOTO BY CORINNE WESTEMAN tent, and parents can sign up for a time to meet with Santa.

In the grotto will be activities for children and pony rides while they wait, and Treinen said the hope is that families won’t spend the entire evening standing in line waiting to see Santa. Instead, they can check out other fun aspects of the Holiday Walk.

Free shuttles will be available from Church of the Hills and Christ the King Catholic Church, and horse-

drawn carriage rides will be available in downtown Evergreen. Pony and carriage rides are provided by the Evergreen Rodeo Association, which is a premier sponsor.

In addition to having fire pits and musical acts along Main Street, the business association is sponsoring a window-decorating contest, and attendees can participate by voting for their favorites from Nov. 26-Dec. 11.

The ballots of those who participate will be put into a drawing for prizes from downtown businesses. “(Downtown businesses) are happy for the support they received during the pandemic,” Treinen said. “Coming off COVID, people are grateful to be able to get out, and for normalcy and big events. I’m hoping (the Holiday Walk) feels like it used to.”

Coloradan organizing national Christmas ornament drive for Marshall Fire victims Operation Christmas Ornaments from Near and Far hopes to provide 12 ornaments each to 500 Colorado families

Two years ago, Carolyn Nicolaysen rallied friends and family members to collect and donate homemade Christmas ornaments to families impacted by wildfires in Oregon, where her daughter lives.

Since then, Nicolaysen founded the Facebook group Operation Christmas Ornaments From Near and Far, and this year is collecting ornaments from folks across the country to donate to victims of the Marshall Fire.

The group accepts handmade ornaments from across the country and beyond — they received one donation from Japan this year — and organizes them into dozen-each sets before working with local organizations to distribute the ornaments to affected families.

Carol Burton, a Colorado resident, is heading up the local charge to get ornaments to Marshall Fire victims this year, and said that she and Nicolaysen found that the sentimen-

tal value of Christmas ornaments makes losing them in a natural disaster especially painful.

“From with talking to people, one of the things people really missed after a disaster were their Christmas ornaments and all of the memories tied up in those,” Burton said.

The group – which now contains over 700 members — had a goal to collect 6,000 ornaments for 500 families impacted by the Marshall Fires.

On Oct. 27, Nicolaysen posted to say that reached their goal for the year, but are still accepting donations of ornaments for Marshall Fire victims and victims of other tragedies, including the tornadoes that damaged parts of Kentucky last year.

Folks interested in donating or receiving Christmas ornaments can join the group by searching ‘Operation Christmas Ornaments from Near and Far’ on Facebook.

The suspect in the jewelry store burglary appears to have a thin build, wearing skinny jeans, a dark colored jacket with a hood and dark colored Adidas shoes with white stripes. The suspect’s backpack has distinct, dark colored ribbing, Kelley said.

“We have caught suspects before with very little information about what they look like,” she said.

“If you see someone with a lot of jewelry or a lot of cash, call the tip line.”

According to the owners of Coal Mine Dragon, the burglars took the cash register and its contents, and this is the first time their restaurant has been burglarized in the 36 years they’ve been in business in Evergreen. They are happy the restaurant was empty and no one was injured.

VOICES Vegan swaps for Thanksgiving

Twelve years ago, my life changed after reading a book by Kim Barnouin. Tears streamed down my cheeks after reading behind-thescenes reports from undercover journalists revealing the horrifying treatment of animals on factory farms. I am certain that I had just eaten a chicken sandwich for dinner prior to my nightly reading. But that night, I decided to go vegan cold turkey.

I didn’t know what being vegan would be like, but that information upset me so deeply, I wanted to do everything I could to not contribute to the mistreatment of animals anymore.

And so my vegan journey began.

At first, I didn’t know a thing about cooking because everything I ate came from a box, bag or from the freezer. Without meat as a main, what would I eat? I had to un-learn everything I’d known about food. At the time, I lived in Cleveland with family, including a self-proclaimed “carnivore” uncle who ate the typical midwestern diet of steak and

add a hint of sweetness. As for butter, the number of plant-based butters has grown significantly since I became vegan. I have tried most of them and Miyoko’s brand has the closest flavor notes as dairy butter, but is often the most expensive.

My favorite Thanksgiving dish is stuffing, and this is my go-to recipe: Vegan Cornbread Stuffing (GF) found on Jessica in the Kitchen. (jessicainthekitchen.com/gluten-freecornbread-stuffing-recipe-vegan) For dessert, if you want to buy packaged pies, many of Marie Callender’s pies are “accidentally vegan,” including the Dutch Apple Pie, Lattice Apple and Peach Pies.

Whole Foods typically sells vegan pumpkin pies. Top your pie with dairy-free ice creams, truwhip or cocowhip. I would avoid the spray cans as my experience has not been so positive in the past.

However you celebrate, and whatever you celebrate, I hope you enjoy.

Are actions louder than words?

here is no doubt that almost universally we have all heard the statement, “Our actions speak louder than our words.” It’s almost as if it is a given, a truth that cannot be debated. The supporting statementis , “What we do speaks so loudly that others can’t hear what we are saying.” Again, for the past many centuries, it would be hard to dispute this as something other than fact.

If we were to take a contrarian view in the world we live in today, I would suggest that maybe the enormity of words has finally usurped the actions of the people.

What do I mean by this? In today’s world it is so much easier to hide behind our words when we can simply post, tweet, text or email, and although we may be challenged or trolled, we are not really held accountable. We can go on the attack, and then we can pretty much hide.

Standing up for our beliefs is an action, but it doesn’t have to be a violent or argumentative act. Instead, sometimes we find ourselves getting into a verbal arm-wrestling match through back-andforth rhetoric that only fans the flame of discord. Even with all the information shared with families, through the news and through social media, we still have more verbal bullying taking place, written and spoken, that unfortunately can lead to tragic consequences.

potatoes. Family poked fun at my sensitive nature, which made holidays especially uncomfortable, but my conviction remained unwavered.

I remember my first Thanksgiving as a vegan. We gathered at my grandmother’s home and I offered to bring a dish to share, but she would not allow it. So, I came prepared with my own hummus and veggies and sat proudly with my unique, but simple plate of animal-friendly foods. I laugh now, thinking back on that holiday as I was so new to veganism and still learning my way around the kitchen. My cooking skills have grown significantly, and I have made many vegan Thanksgiving meals since, mostly from scratch.

A vegan-friendly Thanksgiving isn’t all that hard to accomplish if you’re willing to have a bit of patience and do a little research. As interest in veganism has increased, so has the market for plant-based, animal-free products. A vegan novice these days won’t face as many challenges as I did and so many oth-

What if our actions spoke so loudly that the goodness in our hearts triumphed over the pervasive evil that seems to be growing in our communities? An evil that doesn’t have to exist. An evil driven by polarization of belief systems whether they be social, political or theological.

We are facing crisis and words coming at us from every angle. Yet instead of finding the solution by coming together, we become further separated because we would rather fight and fight dirty than listen and try to understand, working toward a solution. We have a border crisis, fentanyl crisis, inflation crisis, violent crime crisis, education crisis, police crisis, teacher crisis, nursing crisis, physician crisis, first responder crisis, recession crisis, energy crisis, society crisis, divisive crisis, faith crisis, employment crisis, and yet instead of us all stepping up to try and take action to bring us closer, the words we choose and socialize with only drive us further apart.

So, which is speaking louder today, our actions or our words? Those words we hide behind via texts, posts and emails? Those words we hide behind that deface public property? Or is it our action or inaction to do what is right, even in the face of conflict and adversity?

these problems. Some are on very extreme sides and others are centrists. And for me, I may even be accused of having my words speaking louder than my actions as I write this column each week. Yet, my action is actually writing this column with the intent of urging us all to find common ground and a middle that makes us better together. There will be no victory where one side completely convinces the other side that their way is right, this will never happen. However, we can get closer and simply agree to disagree more often.

What can happen is that our actions of love, kindness, justice, mercy, gentleness, generosity, understanding, cooperation, unity and togetherness prove that we are still the United States of America, and that we stand better together than we do when we stand apart.

Charles Edward Wickland

Charles Edward Wickland was the fourth child of Alice Marie (Thompson) and Elmer Ludwig Wickland. He was born in Muskegon, Michigan on May 7, 1929. He passed away at the age of 93 on October 27, 2022, surrounded by the love of his family.

Charles Wickland attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor Michigan where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Metallurgical Engineering. He married his high school sweetheart, Janice A. Schalk December 27, 1951, at her parent’s Muskegon home. After graduation and being newly married, he joined the US Navy and earned the rank of first Lieutenant. Charles completed the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA before serving in the Miami Fleet Hurricane Forecasting Facility in Miami, Florida until June 1956. After Charles’ Navy commission ended, He and Janice settled in Boulder, Colorado where he joined Dow Chemical Company at the Rocky Flats Weapons Plant in Golden Colorado. There, he spent his career in production activities and eventually helping guide the environmental cleanup and waste management activities of the plant. Charles and Janice resided in Boulder Colorado where they raised their three children, Debbie (Behrends), David and Terry. Charles was an active member of the Crestview Christian Reformed Church where for many years held positions as Elder or Church Deacon. When Charles retired,

they moved full-time to their vacation home in Tabernash, Colorado. While living in the Fraser Valley, he was active in the community and the Church of the Eternal Hills. Charles loved to Nordic ski, fly fish, and hike all over Colorado. Also, he especially enjoyed the entire Fraser Valley and community. For over 15 years, Janice and Charles spent several months each year in Maui where they loved to snorkel, swim, take long beach walks and hike in the upland regions of Maui. Chuck’s Loving wife of 72 years, Janice preceded him in death, March 29, 2021. Charles is survived by three children Debra L. Behrends (Bruce Behrends) of Prescott, Arizona, David C. Wickland (Tamara Hooyer-Wickland) of Sedona Arizona, and Terry J. Wickland, (Rebecca Palacio-Wickland) of Evergreen, Colorado, and 7 grandchildren, Jared R. and Kirk A. Behrends, Jessica L., Tyler D. and Katrina J. Wickland; and Tristan R. and Tara L. Wickland. Chuck has one greatgrandchild, Elijah A. Sturdevant of Benson, Minnesota. Chuck was preceded in death by his great- grandchild Ezekiel James BacaBehrends, his sisters Marva-Jane Kirby and Mary Wickland, both of Colorado, and his brothers, Paul, and Robert Wickland, both of Michigan. Charles will be greatly missed.

Albert was born on April 04, 1927 at Pottsville, PA. He served in the Infantry at the end of WWII. He was stationed at Tricesimo, in the north. He studied at Penn State under the G.I. bill where he found his calling in clinical psychology. He did graduate work at a clinic counseling couples. He met his wife Joanne, when he was working as a night attendant in a veteran’s hospital in Washington DC, where she was a student at American University. They came to Denver in 1956 and settled on Lookout Mountain.

He worked at Jefferson County Department of Welfare and at the state of Colorado Department of Rehabilitation as a Vocational Counselor and at the Creation of the Adams

County Department of Mental Health. He worked with the American Heart Association and with deaf clients as well as the general client population. He co-founded a program for people transitioning from hospitals and prisons called Community Corporation and with a Native American support group.

The Greenbergs have two sons David and Alan, and their wives Maureen and Pamela.

Albert collected and restored vintage cars and did woodworking. He also made dulcimers.

Linda Louise Woods Gabitzsch Lancaster died October 17, 2022, at her Littleton home.

She married Steven Lancaster May 20, 2008, in Amherst, NY. The couple traveled extensively throughout the country.

She was born March 4, 1948, to Roger Louis and Dolly (Best) Woods in Tucson, Ariz. She graduated from North Phoenix High School.

Lancaster attended the University of Arizona where she met her first husband, Ronald Burton Gabitzsch. They were married June 8, 1968, and had two children. The family lived in many states and Germany.

In 1975, Lancaster was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After life-saving surgery and extensive rehabilitation, she earned a bachelor’s degree in education in 1979 from the University of Alabama.

Lancaster taught in Germany, Appalachia and the Navajo Reservation. She moved to Evergreen in 1981, taught at Leawood and Bergen elementaries from 1985 to retirement 2003. Lancaster earned a master’s degree

Lancaster became a nationally certified Navajo rug appraiser in 2008. She was a part owner of Sonachi, a rug sales and appraisal business.

She is survived by her husband, Steven Lancaster; children, Heidi Lynn Gabitzsch Evans and Bryan James Gabitzsch; her stepchildren, Frank Lancaster and Danielle Collin; and ten grandchildren.

Paul Eugene Ciszek was born May 5, 1965 and passed away November 4, 2022, at the age of 57 from heart failure and stroke. He lived parts of his life in five different states – Iowa, Michigan, New York, Massachusetts, and primarily Colorado. Colorado was by far his favorite of the places he lived. As a teen and young man in Evergreen, he enjoyed the beauty of nature and loved to hike in the mountains.

Explore a new planet at Wings Over the Rockies

he idea of traveling to another planet seems closer than ever in recent years — no longer is it an idea solely left to the science fiction writers among us. And the Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum is embracing this fact with the unveiling of the new Planet Pioneers Exhibition.

“We’re always trying to bring in something new. Sometimes we do it ourselves and sometimes we get traveling exhibits like this one,” said Stewart Bailey, collections manager at the museum. “This exhibit focuses on space flight and what it’s like to travel to another planet and set up a colony there.”

Created by Scitech in Perth, Australia, and produced by Imagine Exhibitions, Planet Pioneers runs at Wings Over the Rockies Lowry, 7711 East Academy Blvd. in Denver, through Sunday, Jan. 8. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

According to provided information, the exhibit is made up of 17 interactive, immersive exhibits that offer potential explorers of all ages the chance to prepare for the journey to and then explore a distant planet.

“Some of the beginning exhibits allow visitors to establish who the crew members will be, what equipment to take and things like that,” Bailey said. “You have to make the proper choices when considering things like what to take with you

as part of space travel.”

Visitors can also get a taste of what it’s like to prepare for time spent on a new planet with activities like driving a 4-D Surface Exploration Vehicle, flying a virtual drone and experiencing Clarke Reader the G-Force in a spinning capsule.

And once the travelers arrive on the planet, they need to tackle the all-important tasks of finding water and oxygen and growing food.

“Some exhibits are very hands-on, some are more cerebral and this one hits people on all different levels.

It’s a really well-designed exhibit,” Bailey said. “It’s particularly timely with all the renewed interest in space exploration.”

The exhibit’s arrival at Wings Over the Rockies couldn’t be more perfectly timed and will be a great way to spend a day during the holidays. And while it will undoubtedly entertain all visitors, the hope is it also inspires the next generation of travelers.

“We want people to understand that space exploration is open to everybody and that everyone has something to contribute to the future of space flight,” Bailey said.

“It’s exciting, because the generation coming through the exhibit today are the ones who may be going to places like Mars.”

Peace at all costs in Wheat Ridge’s ‘Lysistrata’ Do you ever just stop and think how astounding it is that many of the works we have from ancient Greek times still hold meaning millennia after they were originally written? Putting his talents to use in the Army Evergreen veteran Jim Gorman was part of Camp Hale’s second chapter

Jim Gorman was an avid skier and rock climber in his youth.

Those talents came in handy when he served in the Army from 19521955, teaching soldiers to ski and climb rocks, and about cold-weather survival skills in the Korean War and beyond.

He was stationed at Fort Carson in the summers where he taught rock climbing in the canyons behind the Broadmoor Hotel and at Camp Hale near Leadville in the winters where he taught skiing and cold-weather survival skills.

Gorman, 91, an Evergreen resident since 1973, calls himself part of the second generation of soldiers trained at Camp Hale, those who came after the famous 10th Mountain Division that was trained there in 1943-1944 before serving during World War II in Italy. He is proud that he was part of the Mountain & Cold Weather Training Command.

“We taught survival and how to save lives,” Gorman explained.

“Every six weeks, we taught soldiers mountain climbing, transporting materials with mules, how to survive in the mountains, how to ski. We had to teach how to survive in Korea and in the future.”

For Gorman, his time serving the country is special.

“I would do it all over again,” Gorman said. “It was the greatest period of my life, and I grew up a lot. I was exposed to so many people from so many different places.”

Early life Originally from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Gorman’s family traveled to Estes Park often in the summers.

Young people who didn’t play traditional sports such as basketball and football became rock climbers, he said. After high school, he moved to

One day, Gorman stopped to pick up his mail and put it in his backpack before going climbing with a friend. When they stopped for lunch, he checked his mail, finding his draft notice. He told his friend he considered jumping from the cliff rather than being drafted, and his friend suggested he untie the rope that attached the two first, Gorman said, laughing at the memory.

Instead of waiting for his draft date, he enlisted, so he could better control his military destiny, and he was assigned to the Mountain & Cold Weather Training Command — where he belonged.

Life in the Army Gorman said he was blown up, broke his back and was in a plane crash during his Army stint, and he lived to tell others the tales. He was firing mortar rounds at Camp Hale, when one exploded early, putting eight pieces of shrapnel into his lower body. At Fort Carson, one of the teams he was teaching on a rope bridge played a trick on him that backfired, breaking his back.

And finally, he flew a plane – six takeoffs and five landings as he puts it — thanks to wind sheer, and while he was virtually uninjured, he was discharged three months early.

He noted that sometimes the weather at Camp Hale was miser-

able, and soldiers learned to make snow caves and sled trenches.

Some of the greatest skiers in the United States served in the Mountain & Cold Weather Training Command, Gorman said, including some of the U.S. Olympic ski team and some from college ski teams across the country.

His roommate was James Whittaker, the first American to climb Mount Everest.

Gorman and others went heli-skiing near Vail, and they created sleeping bags that were much warmer than those the Army had and mittens with openings for a soldier’s trigger finger.

“One of our jobs was to create newer, better equipment,” he noted.

Gorman doesn’t have any photos or memorabilia of his time in the Army or of rock climbing, skiing or flying.

“I just never took any pictures,” he said.

Life after the military After serving in the Army, Gorman moved to Estes Park, where he saved up enough money to buy a twobedroom kit house that he assembled – “my pride and joy” — that he sold years later. He began college at the University of Colorado, finishing a business degree at the University of Denver in 1959. He had a long career working in sales.

He met Helen, an interior designer for the Denver Dry stores, while on a sales call, and she didn’t buy the merchandise he was selling.

They went on a date and married in 1968.

Gorman has been a mainstay at veterans events in the foothills, and he helped Evergreen Memorial Park in Marshdale create a veterans cemetery. Now he is hoping to get donations to put pine trees around the veterans area.

Gorman says he and some of his friends who served in the Mountain & Cold Weather Training Command feel they have been overshadowed by the 10th Mountain Division’s notoriety, and he has fought to make sure the command’s contributions haven’t been overlooked.

Camp Hale was deactivated in 1965, and on Oct. 12, 2022, President Biden designated the Camp Hale Continental Divide National Monument. The monument consists of 53,804 acres, which are managed by the White River National Forest unit of the U.S. Forest Service.

Gorman says he’s lived a full life, and he hasn’t skied or climbed rocks in years. He is known for sitting in a chair along Highway 73 on Veterans Day, Memorial Day and the Fourth of July waving an American flag to remind others of patriotism, love of country and remembering those who have served.

Mountain climbing is a metaphor for how he’s lived life for 91 years.

“Summiting mountains wasn’t important,” he said. “It was facing the challenge of the climb.”

Celebrating Native American Indian Heritage Month in November is a pathway to honoring Indigenous people year-round

T

he Denver area today is a hub for Native Americans.

It was approximately between 1945 and 1965 when Native Americans found Denver to be a desirable place to find work, said Cheryl Crazy Bull, president of the Denver-based American Indian College Fund.

This time period is known as the Relocation and Termination period, when Native Americans were removed from reservations and relocated to urban areas, Crazy Bull said.

Awareness of the plight of Native American communities rose in the 1960s and `70s, and this included concern for the lack of representation and visibility of tribal members in every corner of American life, Crazy Bull said.

“We saw a desire in Native American communities to create pathways for more people in public to see us,” Crazy Bull said. “Native American Heritage Month and Indigenous Peoples’ Day emerged out of a desire for that kind of visibility.”

In 1990, President George H. W. Bush established Native American Indian Heritage Month, which is celebrated every November.

“Native American Indian Heritage Month is a focused educational time,” Crazy Bull said.

‘Our own way of knowing the world’ Crazy Bull grew up in South Dakota and takes pride in being a citizen of the Sicangu Lakota nation, part of the Seven Council Fires. Each of the Council Fires is made up of individual tribal bands, based on kinship, dialect and geographic proximity.

“Indigenous people have our own way of knowing the world and our own knowledge system focusing on kinship and relationships,” Crazy Bull said. “We believe in generosity and industriousness, and being responsible in our actions and the gifts that people bring to us in their talent.”

social dance video, book clubs, watch parties and panels. Crazy Bull will cap the celebration month with a live discussion.

Recognizing Native Americans during Thanksgiving “A lot of people have come to learn that the history behind Thanksgiving dinner (and) the stories we learned in school, are not exactly correct,” said NancyJo Houk, chief marketing and development officer for the American Indian College Fund. “I think it’s wonderful that people are starting to hear and understand that the truth behind the story of Thanksgiving isn’t what we all thought that it was.”

Houk said there are ways to celebrate the holiday while also honoring Native Americans. She suggests reciting a land recognition or incorporating a traditional native dish to the meal. The college fund also provides resources of accurate history to share and discuss during the meal.

Beyond Native American Heritage Month The idea is that Indigenous people will be honored beyond the month of November. That starts with research and self-education,

Crazy Bull said. Her suggestions include taking advantage of opportunities to meet people of different cultures at social gatherings, work or club meetings. She said to also pay close attention to how Native American people are represented in schools, and take note of historical references in coursework to ensure there is representation of Indigenous peoples, Crazy Bull said.

Additionally, the Front Range boasts many nonprofits that serve Indigenous communities across the U.S. that people can learn more about. For example, the American Indian Science and Engineering Society on the University of Colorado-Denver campus and the American Indian Academy of Denver. And, there’s the Native American Rights Fund based in Boulder and Longmont’s First Nations Development Institute.

There’s also the American Indian Academy of Denver, a free charter school focused on student-driven STEAM curriculum that was established to support Native American and Latinx students.

It provides a “learning in an environment where children get a lot of opportunity to honor their Indigenious community,” Crazy Bull said.

Also in Denver, the city and county’s Commission of Indian Affairs “strives to support visibility of Native people in Denver,

and also legislation,” Crazy Bull said, adding that “Colorado itself has passed some laws that were really important, like banning mascots, (and) legislation supporting tuition support of members of tribes.”

For the arts, Crazy Bull points to the North American Indian Cultures exhibition hall at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science and the Denver Art Museum’s Indigenous Arts of North America gallery. Both offer opportunities to experience Native American culture any time of the year.

Another resource is the NativeLands app, which helps people discover what lands were the traditional homes of specific Indengous peoples.

Other suggestions to celebrate and honor Native Americans include learning how to cook traditional native foods and supporting Native American-owned businesses, such as Denver’s own Tocabe, an American Indian eatery. There are also volunteer opportunities with organizations such as the Denver Indian Resource Center, the Denver Indian Center or Spirit of the Sun. “In the U.S., there’s this practice of trying to celebrate diversity in framed ways, so Native American Heritage Month is an example of that social practice of drawing attention to groups of people by setting aside time for them to be recognized,” Crazy Bull said.

Arvada Elks Lodge taking donations to help feed Jeffco families Elks holiday food drive to benefit 150 Jefferson County Public School District families

The Arvada Elks Lodge is accepting donations to provide holiday meals for 150 Jefferson County Public School District until Nov. 26.

The food drive replaces the Thanksgiving basket drive that took place in previous years due to concerns about the accessibility of making some of the food contained in the baskets.

This year, the Elks are giving out $100 King Sooper’s gift card to families from 15 Jeffco schools. Liaisons from the schools helped determine which families were facing food insecurity; the family’s identities are confidential.

Elks Member Rick Assmus said the organization wanted to make sure that folks could choose foods that work for their needs, as opposed to previous years where traditional holiday fare — a turkey, stuffing, potatoes — was given to families.

“Sometimes families who have been hit with hard times don’t have the utilities to cook turkeys,” Assmus said. “Families who are struggling to put food on the table might not be able to take the time to stuff a turkey or a ham. They just want to

put food on the table, whether that be a pot pie, a TV dinner or hamburgers.”

Assmus said the Elks are working with King Soopers so that the gift cards can be used for any grocery store products besides alcohol or tobacco.

The Elks are volunteer-run and

have no administrative fees for fundraisers. If the organization raises more than $15,000, Assmus said, the funding will be donated to local groups that help combat food insecurity including Community Table and Laradon Hall.

“We always take in donations,” Assmus said. “We like to emphasize

that we don’t have any administrative fees. Everything we do is voluntary. We’re not going to charge people to process their donation; it gets deposited directly into our charity account.”

Pain behind the name: renaming Mount Evans Why the name Mount Evans is hurtful to generations of Native Americans

When members of the Arapaho and Cheyenne tribes look west from Denver to the distant peak of Mount Evans, they see a horrific reminder of the past.

“Anytime you have to hear of or speak of an individual who wanted to decimate your family or your tribe, it’s really hard,” said Gov. Reggie Wassana of the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes.

Since 1895, the mountain has been named for Colorado territorial Gov. John Evans. Settlers lobbied the legislature to honor his legacy, which it did through a measure that dubbed the more than 14,000-foot-high peak Mount Evans.

But American Indian groups say Evans’ legacy is forever disgraced by his role in enabling the Sand Creek Massacre. ton and elements of the Colorado Infantry Regiment of Volunteers and Regiment of Colorado Cavalry Volunteers launched an attack on Arapaho and Cheyenne civilians where they camped about 180 miles southeast of Denver.

Over the course of eight hours, the troops slaughtered some 230 people, many of them women, children and elderly. The following day, many soldiers wandered the area, committing atrocities on the dead, according to the National Park Service, which maintains a national historic site in the area where the events occurred.

“It’s hard and it’s tragic because those generations would have lived and would have grown,” Wassana said.

The first meeting of the body considering the name change, the Colorado Geographic Naming Advisory Board, took place on Oct. 11. More than 100 people attended, including Wassana and other native representatives.

“Mount Blue Sky” is a name the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes like.

“It was something that fit both tribes perfectly,” Wassana said “It fit the mountain as well.”

Others have suggested a name in the language of the Cheyennes or Arapahos, but Wassana said

those advocates could disrupt the unity the tribes are working to advance.

“Since we’re Cheyenne and Arapaho, we have two languages,” he said. “We wanted everyone to agree.”

Since 2020, the tribes have formally petitioned for Mount Blue Sky, an effort joined by The Wilderness Society, a nonprofit conservation group.

There are others who have lobbied to keep the name Mount Evans, but with a twist, naming it for descendants of Evans’ family. Others have suggested Mount Rosalie, an unofficial name of the mountain before it bore Evans’ name.

Both names are steeped in settler culture.

Tink Tinker, a professor emeritus at Denver’s Iliff School of Theology, is a member of the Osage tribe. He has dedicated much of his career to teaching the cultures, history and religious traditions of American Indians.

Settlers, Tinker said, were colonizers in American Indian homelands. When they came, they renamed everything.

“It’s not unusual for the colonizer to name things after themselves,” he said. “The impetus was to name things so they belonged to the colonizer.”

The Arapaho, Cheyenne and Wilderness Society petition to change the name includes a statement signed by Evans in

1864: “I, John Evans, governor of Colorado Territory, do issue this my proclamation, authorizing all citizens of Colorado, either individually or in such parties as they may organize, to go in pursuit of all hostile Indians on the plains… to kill and destroy, as enemies of the country, wherever they may be found, all such hostile Indians.”

Historians say that statement helped set the tone for the events that eventually led up to the massacre.

Andrew Masich is the president and CEO of the Senator John Heinz History Center, a Smithsonian Institute affiliate in Pennsylvania. He said the massacre began when many men from the tribe were out hunting. This left the most vulnerable at risk of being attacked by Chivington’s troops near a bend in Big Sandy Creek on Colorado’s plains.

“The women and children began to run up the dry creek bed,” Masich said.

Many tried to dig themselves holes into the sand to escape the violence.

“It was a slaughter, probably one of the most horrific massacres in the history of the United States,” Masich said.

Afterward, Congress’ Joint Committee on the Conduct of War wrote this of Chivington’s conduct toward the peaceful tribes: “Having full knowledge of their friendly character, having him-

self been instrumental to some extent in placing them in their position of fancied security, he took advantage of their inapprehension and defenseless condition to gratify the worst passions that ever cursed the heart of man.”

The committee in Washington also rebuked Evans for his “prevarication and shuffling” in his testimony of Sand Creek events and his failure to acknowledge that what transpired was a massacre. Secretary of State William Seward subsequently forced Evans to resign as governor.

But when Evans returned to Colorado, residents cheered his arrival, according to History Colorado.

“Throughout the rest of his life,” the organization writes, Evans “never chastised Chivington or the soldiers involved in the massacre, and he continued to maintain that it had been necessary for the development of Colorado and the west.”

The organization quotes Evans’ words in an interview that came 20 years after the massacre.

“The benefit to Colorado of that massacre, as they call it, was very great for it ridded the plains of the Indians,” Evans said.

The naming board next meets on Nov. 17 over Zoom and the conversation about the name change will continue. The link to the meeting can be found on the Colorado Geographic Naming Advisory Board’s website.

Settlement reached in use-of-force incident

The City of Idaho Springs has reached a multi-million dollar settlement with Michael Clark, an Idaho Springs resident who filed a federal lawsuit against the city and members of the Idaho Springs Police Department for events that took place on May 30, 2021.

Clark was met by officers at his apartment after a call from a neighbor regarding an altercation. Officer Nicholas Hanning fired a TASER weapon at Clark, causing him to fall and sustain a head injury.

Clark filed a suit alleging injuries from the incident, and Hanning was placed on leave and later terminated after a review process. Another officer involved in the incident was disciplined and no longer works for the city.

The settlement announced on Nov. 2 is in the amount of $7 million. The claims against individual members of ISPD were dismissed and the agreement does not represent an admission of liability from the city.

Close encounter CONIFER – Around 4:15 p.m.

Oct. 9, Mr. and Mrs. Crabbe walked out of the busy grocery store and into the parking lot. At about 4:15 and three seconds, Randy Random walked out of the store behind them.

Mr. and Mrs, Crabbe immediately complained to Randy that he was “following us too close.” Randy reasonably explained that he wasn’t “following” them so much as walking to his car, which was parked near their own. The Crabbes cornered Randy at his vehicle, giving him four barrels of verbal buckshot and then, according to at least two witnesses, “choke-slammed him against the hood.” Alarmed, one witness noted the Crabbe’s license plate number and dialed 911. Contacted by deputies, the combative couple’s hapless victim was surprisingly blasé about the business. “It’s not a big deal,” Randy shrugged. “I don’t want to hold up my roommates with this dumb (shiatzu).” Deputies assured him that they had witnesses and his attackers’ identities, and that he had a case if he wanted to press it. “I won’t be in Colorado much longer,” Randy said.

“I really don’t want to deal with this any more than I have to.” The officers let Randy let the Crabbes off the hook.

Clark’s attorney, Sarah Schielke, held a press conference on Nov. 2 where her office and Clark’s adult children gave statements about the settlement.

Schielke said the settlement is the largest in state history for a civil rights case that does not involve wrongful death. She went on to describe the event with ISPD as part of a “cultural phenomenon with police in this area.”

Clark could not be present at the press conference due to medical concerns, but Schielke read a statement on his behalf where he said he hoped the settlement would be able to spur change to help other victims, and lamented the loss of his previous life.

“In the end, I will never get back what they took,” Clark’s statement said.

The road to accountability has been a winding one, exacerbated by other counts of police violence within Clear Creek County.

Clark’s daughter, Cynthia Flageolle, felt mixed emotions for her family at the settlement with the city.

“Most people would expect us to say we are happy and excited about this,” she said. “We would be most happy if he could have his old life back.”

provided relief in that the family will be able to take care of Clark’s medical needs, and the stress of the case can be off her father’s mind.

The settlement can’t, however, bring back the quality of life Clark had before the incident, Flageolle said. Flageolle said her father now requires 24-hour supervision and care, uses a wheelchair and doctors say he has reached maximum recovery.

“He’s not able to drive, he’s not even able to transfer from his bed to a wheelchair without assistance,” she said.

Flageolle, a business owner and mom, has had her own life uprooted by the incident in 2021. She is now the primary caregiver for her father, and many of her other responsibilities are on hold.

Whitey considered the rescinded invitation inhospitable in the extreme and declined the anti-offer at the top of his lungs, which actually did rouse June, which is when Beaver started physically pushing Whitey toward the door. After a brief shoving match, June called 911 and Whitey wound up on the cold side of the Welcome mat to await officers, who quickly got him situated in a nice, toasty detox center.

No charges were filed.

Sort-of-Complainant can take comfort in knowing that his report almost certainly won’t get White Sedan in any trouble since it doesn’t include the make and model of his car, his license plate number, or any part of his name.

“The shows we did during COVID were funny and silly and parodies,” Archer said. “With ‘Steel Magnolias,’ we can get into all the different layers of acting. We all have gone through so much, so to go deep in this type of story is really important.”

Archer called the play a chance for a small group of CHS’ tight-knit actors — eight total — to do something challenging and create an amazing show. The play is more dramatic and less Hollywood than the movie, Archer added.

The cast consists of Fiona Matschullat, Lydia Daniels, Hannah Boeding, Dallas Maxey, Liberty Godwin, Maggie Sullivan, Gabie Bartlett and Leon Cutlan.

Amanda Dougherty, who has worked in theater for 20 years, is directing the play.

A frigid Mountain Bowl win for Evergreen Cougars beat Lobos 41-0

The Mountain Bowl is a great way to end a football season for the Evergreen Cougars and Conifer Lobos — despite frigid weather and Evergreen’s 41-0 rout of its crosstown rival.

The Cougars kept the trophy after the Nov. 4 game, and Evergreen head coach Matt Van Praag said the score doesn’t tell the game’s whole story.

“Conifer always plays us really tough,” Van Praag said. “They did (Friday) night despite the score. In the nine other games this season, we were not challenged the same way.

We have a ton of respect for those guys. They do it the right way.”

Evergreen is 8-2 on the season, 4-1 in 3A league play, while Conifer is 5-5, 3-2 in 3A league play. Evergreen should hear soon who it plays at regionals.

Evergreen has won 11 of the last 14 Mountain Bowls. The rivalry games returned to the foothills in 2009, thanks to lights installed on Evergreen’s football field.

running backs Jack Johnson and Gabe Zimmerer scored touchdowns in the first half, making the score 21-0. In the second half, wide receiver Sam Grimshaw and quarterback Tommy Poholsky scored touchdowns while Nash Carroll had a pick-six.

“These kids grew up playing football together,” Van Praag said.

“As coaches, we have coached many of them on the lower level as well, so we have personal relationships with kids from both Conifer and Evergreen.”

That means, he noted, that the players are not intimidated by each other.

“I told our players before the games that the rivalry we share with Conifer is special,” Van Praag said. “We celebrate each other, and competition is really healthy for our fans and kids. The Mountain Bowl brings the two communities together to celebrate our youth sports.”

Van Praag said he told his team that Conifer plays with intensity, calling it an honor to coach here and play against Conifer because of such a high level of competition.

gree weather and gusting winds, but hardy souls watched and cheered as the game progressed.

Schuette’s son was playing with the marching band, while Farrell noted that she lived across the street, so she felt compelled to root for Evergreen.

Fernando and Kate Portillo and their daughter Brynn had the perfect spot behind the west endzone to watch the game. Fernando said this was the family’s typical spot to watch the game.

“I can see all the action from here,” he noted.

The family was split in who they wanted to win: Kate cheered for Evergreen while Fernando for Conifer.

Brynn said she didn’t have a favorite team.

The Evergreen marching band used the Mountain Bowl to invite the Evergreen Middle School seventhand eighth-graders to play together, since the two schools have formed a relationship so some middle schoolers join the high school band. In fact, the Evergreen marching band took fifth in the state 3A championship recently, the first time it was in the finals since 2016.

Evergreen junior GiGi Donaldson and seventh grader Samantha Willoughby, both clarinetists, said they were toughing through the cold weather with the help of hot chocolate and hand warmers.

Several members of the Evergreen 2016 graduating class and its football team decided to drive up the hill to watch the game. Levi LaGuardia and Greg Royal agreed while it was definitely cold out, it was fun to be back to watch the Mountain Bowl.

A new chapter: Coming to terms with a gruesome legacy

A book once revered by white people and put on proud display at a Denver seminary later became an object of such shame and bitterness that it has taken its custodians decades to come to terms with it.

The book is a history of Christianity in Latin, published in 1752. At some point, the volume acquired a grotesque cover — the flayed, tanned skin of a murdered Native American.

For 129 years, the book has been kept at the Iliff School of Theology, affiliated with the United Methodist Church, a school that describes itself as being “recognized nationally and internationally for its emphasis on peace, justice, and ethics.” Its alumni include ministers, chaplains, scholars and political leaders across the country.

In 1893, a Methodist minister presented the book as a gift to the then-new school on the University of Denver campus. For decades, the book was displayed in a glass case at the entrance to Iliff’s library.

“It’s deeply ironic that they would cover that book of Christian history with human skin taken from a murder victim, … an Indian,” George “Tink” Tinker, professor emeritus of American Indian cultures at Iliff and a citizen of the Osage Nation (Wazhazhe), told Rocky Mountain PBS. Tinker has written extensively about the book, its origins and its significance. He said it was long regarded as “a trophy, as a sacred relic of triumph over Indians.”

Nearly 50 years ago, facing pressure from students and finally seeing the book as an embarrassment rather than a treasure, Iliff officials had the cover of human skin removed and took the book off display.

School leaders at the time wanted to silence the controversy, and swore to secrecy those with knowledge of the situation.

Decades later, Iliff began to see things differently. “It was time for us to tell the truth about this book,” said Thomas Wolfe, the current

school president and CEO. Now the book and its gruesome history have spawned a gathering of cultures to share perspectives and search for a path forward. It’s a journey that participants hope will lead to accountability and understanding.

Across the country, other colleges as well as museums and federal agencies are coming to terms with Native American remains and cultural artifacts they have long possessed, recently including Yale University, the University of California-Berkeley and the University of Kansas.

A 1990 law, the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), lays out a process for the return of Native American remains and objects taken from tribal lands. The National Park Service estimates that the remains of at least 108,000 native people are in the hands of non-tribal institutions, including colleges and museums.

The Denver Museum of Nature & Science, which has a large collection of Native American artifacts in its anthropology collections, says it “has returned numerous cultural items through NAGPRA. … The museum has consulted on all known Native American human remains in its collections and only curates human remains for which informed consent has been given by the individual or her/his family, kin, or community.”

A murder and a defiled body Different stories about the Iliff book cover’s origins have been told over the centuries. According to Tinker and Loring Abeyta, an Iliff adjunct lecturer who is Tinker’s wife, the cover came from the defiled body of a member of the Lenape people, original inhabitants of parts of what is now the northeast United States.

In 1779, they wrote recently, a white farmer who was occupying

Lenape land in western Virginia killed two native men “for the crime of walking across what he considered his own property.” They refute early accounts that described the killing as the result of a heroic fight with a “warrior.”

One of the Lenape men “had his skin flayed so that it could be some sort of a trophy or a treasure,” Abeyta told Rocky Mountain PBS. “And then … there was some decision made that it was a great idea to bind the book in the skin of this Lenape victim.”

Held by the farmer’s family, the book “evidently was enough of a treasure that it was … shown around and bragged about,” she said.

Eventually the book wound up in the hands of a Methodist minister, R.M. Barns, who had moved to Colorado. Barns donated the book to Iliff in 1893, then in its second year.

For the next eight decades, Iliff had the book on display in a glass case. A 1934 article about the book in the Rocky Mountain News described its cover as “finer than the finest vellum” and praised the skin’s “smoothness and texture equal [to] the finest parchment.” The article called the volume “one of the most treasured relics in the library of the Iliff School of Theology” and a “priceless vestment for the teachings of brotherly love.”

In 1974, the book drew another kind of attention from some Iliff students, who protested the display. They also reached out to local American Indian Movement representatives.

Jerry Campbell, then an assistant librarian at Iliff and later president of Claremont School of Theology and Claremont-Lincoln University, said he was given the task of severing the cover from the book with a blade so the skin could be turned over to the American Indian Movement (AIM) for burial on native land.

“I remember thinking, ‘Good grief, this is the skin of a human being,’” Campbell told United Methodist News in an October 2020 article. “I just remember thinking this is a terrible thing to have here and be kind of celebrating it.”

At the time, Iliff leaders decided to maintain silence about the book and its cover, asking AIM and others with knowledge of the situation to sign a non-disclosure agreement “in order to protect Iliff in terms of its fundraising potential,” Tinker said.

“That’s immoral and unethical,” Tinker said of the secrecy. “… Christians have two words for it that we don’t have in any Indian language. It was evil, and it was sinful.”

The school has stored the coverless book out of public view ever since.

‘Nobody will talk to you about this’ Tinker said he learned of the book in 1986, shortly after joining the Iliff

faculty.

“One of my colleagues pulled me aside, and said, ‘Nobody will talk to you about this, but you need to know that this happened at Iliff’,” he said.

Tinker said he “almost left” Iliff after hearing about the book, “because it is so disturbing to an American Indian.”

Instead of leaving, he said, “I waited until everybody was in church on Sunday, ... and I went back in the building, and I smudged every nook and cranny I could.”

The school’s policy of secrecy about the book and its sordid past changed after Wolfe, a United Methodist pastor and elder, arrived as Iliff president in 2013.

Wolfe said he had learned about the book years before coming to Iliff, hearing talk about it at a 1996 United Methodist conference in Denver.

“Just the idea of a book covered with the skin of a Native American person was profoundly disturbing,” Wolfe told Rocky Mountain PBS. “You don’t have to be affiliated with the school to feel that. It’s part of a long history of violation of native peoples in this country.”

He said the book represents “not just one institution’s lack of understanding but [also] the whole nature of Christian domination that misplaced and murdered millions of native people.”

The cover may be gone, Tinker said, but that “doesn’t remove entirely the spirit of that Lenape murder victim from the book itself.

Something needs to happen to that book. But Iliff shouldn’t do anything without talking to Lenape people.”

Tinker also advocated that Iliff look beyond the disposition of the book itself. “I really wanted to change the behavior of my white relatives,” he said.

‘Making things right for our ancestor’ And so Tinker and Wolfe asked Lenape elders to come to Denver and offer guidance. That led to two days of meetings in April that Rocky Mountain PBS was invited to observe. The elders also examined the book.

“Our big question is, what do we do

with the book?” Wolfe said, “and the understanding was, we are preparing ourselves to be guided.”

Among those on hand for the meetings was Curtis Zunigha, cofounder of the Lenape Center, an arts and culture organization, and cultural director and a former chief of the Delaware Tribe. (Delaware is another name for the Lenape people.)

“It’s important that the Iliff School at least listen to us and try to take steps in a new and better direction,” Zunigha told Rocky Mountain PBS. He said Iliff must recognize that by accepting the book in 1893 and knowing its origins, “they became complicit in the colonial domination and the racism” against natives.

Zunigha said that the spiritual force of the murdered Lenape man whose skin covered Iliff’s book remains centuries after his death.

“The Lenape way of life was one of understanding that not only do we as humans have a living spirit, but that all of creation has a living spirit,” Zunigha said. “… The spirit endures beyond just the physical life.”

Another elder at the meetings was Patricia Noah, who said she reacted with “disgust and sadness and heartache” when Zunigha told her about the Iliff book.

“I think that [murdered] man’s spirit got caught between this physical world and the spiritual world,” she said. “He couldn’t get to the spiritual world because part of [him] was put on that book. Part of his spirit stayed there and was stuck there.”

Out of their Denver meetings, the Lenape delegation presented a “statement of guidance and direction” calling on Iliff to take a number of steps. Those steps include creating a display or memorial about the book, establishing “an Interpretive Center to educate Indians and non-Indians [on] the truths of American history as it pertains to the Indigenous nations,” funding an endowed professorship “filled by an American Indian activist scholar,” and enhancing curriculum.

“At such time as it is requested by the Lenape, the Elders will take possession of the book,” the statement

says.

Iliff leaders formally accepted the Lenape delegation’s recommendations and offered their own document outlining “active steps” the school will take to meet them.

Another in-person meeting with the Lenape elders is scheduled for April 2023 to review progress on the recommendations.

“The Board of Trustees and the leadership of Iliff School of Theology and their successors support and commit to a permanent relationship with the Lenape Elders and their successors toward building a new history and relationship in full recognition of Iliff’s history of possession of the book of Christian history covered in the skin of a Lenape man,” the Iliff document says.

For now, the book will stay at Iliff. Said Zunigha: “The sense of response and commitment from Iliff will … inform and frame our attitude about taking possession of this book and making things right by that ancestor.”

Until the book is turned over, it “will remain in a secure and respectful place within the President’s Office,” the Iliff response document said.

It’s clear that the process discussed in the talks will not be concluded overnight, and will need to be carried forward by future Iliff administrations.

“This is going to be a commitment that this generation is making for this institution going forward in time,” Wolfe said.
