Confluence: It’s the perfect word to describe the 19th annual Evergreen Jazz Festival. It’s a confluence of gospel, spirituals and jazz at the annual gospel service at Evergreen Christian Church. It’s the confluence of about 2,000 locals and out-of-towners who converge on Evergreen for three days in late July. SEE JAZZ, P5

300 attending virtual meeting had many questions about the proposal BY DEB HURLEY BROBST DBROBST@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

The developers of the proposed Shadow Mountain Bike Park in Conifer answered a wide range of questions on July 27 to provide information and to try to quell the mounting opposition to the proposal. The virtual community meeting on July 27 hosted by developers Phil Bouchard and Jason Evans was attended by about 300 people who by the end of the night had put more than 600 questions and comments into the Q-and-A section. Because of the way the Zoom call was configured, attendees could not see the names of others on the call or the SEE BIKE PARK, P4

OBITUARIES MARKHAM

Philip Louis Markham

August 11, 1938 - July 22, 2022

“Papa Phil” died peacefully, with family nearby, on July 22, 2022 at Elk Run ALF in Evergreen, CO. The family thanks all the wonderful staff at Elk Run and Mt Evans Hospice for their care and attention. It made all the difference. Phil was born August 11, 1938 in Jacksonville, FL, the middle son of John Wesley “Papa John” Markham, Jr and Dorothy (Germain) “Betty” Markham. He grew up in Ponte Vedra Beach, next to the island 9th hole of the PVC Ocean Course. “P. Looie” was an Eagle Scout at 13 and went to Fletcher HS and Bishop Kenney HS before attending University of Florida where he was a football cheerleader and a Beta Theta Pi. After college, he joined the Army Reserve and also joined his father’s Markham Sales Agency as a furniture Manufacturers Rep, covering Fla and the Southeast. A job which he loved and thrived in, repping Bernhardt Furniture for the next 25 years. During this time, with wife Heather, he helped raise his 2 boys in the Tampa Bay area living in Clearwater, Belleair, Indian Rocks Beach, Island Estates, and Safety Harbor. In 1989, Phil decided to “go West,” following his Florida ex-patriot family. He joined his brother David/wife Peggy and nephew Dave Jr/wife Heather in the Evergreen area for “the beautiful scenery with no Fla humidity or mosquitoes!” He worked in retail furniture for the next 15 years until retiring as “Papa Phil.” Skiing was never his thing, but he really enjoyed the majestic mountains, especially the “14ers” with peaks over 14K feet. So much so that his final BUTLER

wishes are for his ashes to be spread at the top of Mt Evans in Evergreen. A voracious reader, lover of maps, inventor of recipes, and avid mailer/e-mailer, Papa Phil was always gregarious, quick to lend a hand, flash a smile, and crack a joke. In fact, he was once honored as “Hero of the Month” by the local Evergreen Fire Dept for saving the life of his neighbor down the hall, who had started a fire on his stove and passed out before Phil got there in time to pull him out to safety. Phil was predeceased by his parents and his older brother John W. Markham, III (Sarasota). He is survived by younger brother David, Sr and Peggy (Moore) Markham of Seattle (formerly of Evergreen); Son Christopher von Brecht and Sarah Lynn (Meyer) Markham of Belleair, with stepgrands William White and Lucie White; Son Peter Germain and Sandy (Reynolds) Markham of Darien, CT, with grands Emily “Mimi” Markham and Elizabeth “Libby” Markham; Niece Beth Markham of San Diego; Nephew David, Jr and Heather (Dion) Markham of Evergreen, with their twin sons Andrew and John W., IV; Niece Drew (Markham) Mashuda and Steve of Seattle, with their daughter Ansley and son Wade. He is also survived by the mother of Chris and Peter, Heather (Heuchan) Foderingham and their step-dad Deric of Clearwater. With Papa Phil, there was never a stranger, only a friend or acquaintance he hadn’t made yet. His warmth and big heart will be missed by all. In lieu of flowers, please donate at MtEvans.org

William Charles “Bill” Butler January 7, 1944 - July 15, 2022

Dr. William Charles Butler (Bill) age 78, passed away on July 15, 2022 at Life Care Center of Evergreen, Colorado, of late onset, acute myeloid leukemia. He was born on January 7th, 1944, in Bloomington, IL to Lois Hoobler Butler and Edward Charles Butler, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Charlene Butler, of Evergreen, son Timothy Wayne Butler , daughter-in-law Linda Clement and granddaughter Claire Elizabeth Butler all of Boulder and sisters Lucinda Butler Dohan of Cincinnati, OH and Lois Butler Gloor of Alexandria, VA, as well as five nieces and nephews and their children and his 102 year old Aunt Vera Hoobler Brady from Gridley, Illinois.

Being an avid outdoorsman, he and his son volunteered with the Alpine Rescue Team. Bill did freelance detective investigations and blood hound searches. He taught gun safety, self-defense and outdoor survival. Nearly 30 years after participating in the Alpine Rescue Team’s original search for journalist Keith Reinhard on Pendleton Mountain, with his bloodhound Reliant, he was asked to revisit the cold case by a documentary team as forensic scientist, certified legal investigator and endorsed expert witness in canine mantrailing. He loved to engage in conversations about probability and investigate genealogy. He authored manuals about using the scientific method in crime solving and collected antique cars. He served as president of the Evergreen Ambulance Services in the 1980’s.

Bill graduated from the University of Illinois in 1966, eventually getting his PhD in Geology from the University of Arizona. After teaching at Russell Sage College in Troy, At Bill’s request, there was no funeral. BIKE PARK FROM PAGE 1

questions and responses. Bouchard and Evans want to put the downhill mountain bike park on 230 acres owned by the State Land Board two miles up Shadow Mountain Drive, and the proposal has faced extensive backlash from neighbors since it was originally proposed in January 2021. July 27’s community meeting is the precursor to the developers formally applying to Jefferson County for a special-use permit on the property that is zoned Agriculture-2. Evans and Bouchard propose a day-use bike park with a chairlift, the only one of its kind in Colorado, that would be open generally from March to October depending on weather. It would have a parking lot for 300 cars, 16 miles of trails between 6 feet and 15 feet wide that cater to a wide range of abilities, a lodge for registration and a small shop. A change from the development proposed in January 2021 when it was called Full Send Bike Ranch is there no longer will be a restaurant and bar, Bouchard said. Instead, food trucks are planned. In addition, he added, the parking lot and lodge would be moved further south to help keep the meadow pristine. While not all questions were answered after three-and-a-half hours, the developers promised more community meetings to make sure neighbors understood the proposal and its impact on the area.

Pros and cons Bouchard said the park’s name was changed from Full Send because while the term means being passionate about something to some, to others it has the connotation of meaning crazy, over-the-top riding. While the developers have had some support from mountain bikers, they also have received vocal opposition from Stop the Bike Park, a nonprofit formed last year to bring awareness to the project and to convince the Jeffco Planning Commission and county commissioners that the bike park is a bad idea. Environmental and wildlife impacts plus overtaxing Elk Creek Fire’s emergency medical service are big concerns, but at the top of the list is additional traffic on the narrow, windy road. The developers say on peak days, they expect up to 500 cars on Shadow Mountain Drive equating to 1,000 trips per day. Eleven people spoke during the

meeting, and one suggested that the developers create a business plan similar to Denver Adventures, which has an office in Aspen Park and uses shuttles to take zip liners to Beaver Ranch. That business model, he said, would alleviate traffic congestion on Shadow Mountain Road, and eliminate the need for a large parking area and a lodge on the property. “We want this to be a good situation for all of us,” attendee Randy Bates said. “Let’s be honest here. This is mostly likely going to go through, and we would like something good for community. Using shuttles would alleviate a lot of issues people have with the plan.” One attendee asked whether the public would see the impact analysis to make sure it was comprehensive before it was provided to Jefferson County. Attendees countered the developers’ belief that the mountain bike Listen Live:

park would pull riders off congested area trails such as at Flying J, Meyer Ranch and Staunton State Park, saying that if the bike park was full, riders would just go to nearby locations. In response to questions, the developers said: • There would be little light pollution since the park would be open during daylight hours; • The property would be mitigated against wildfire; • No residential or commercial development would be located on the site; • Echo Mountain would be too small for the project, and the developers have not even talked with the Echo Mountain owners; • Ticket prices and hours of operation haven’t been determined; • Water usage would be similar to that of two single-family homes, and the park would operate on a septic system; • The project is being funded by Jefferson County residents; • There would be no access to the bike park from Christopher Drive on the south side of the property; • The trails would be under the tree canopy so they wouldn’t be visible to passersby; • Smoking, camping and campfires wouldn’t be allowed; • While a traffic study has not been completed, it will look the park’s opening and closing in conjunction with school bus and commuter traffic; • The development would be as environmentally friendly as possible.

JAZZ

“Jazz performers know how to turn dissonance into harmony,” Richard Ward said in his sermon. “The Bible is God’s improvisation around a theme of God’s love for people. To bring harmony, Jesus had to improvise.” The service ended “the only way you can finish (a jazz service),” Ward said, with a rousing rendition of “When the Saints Go Marching In.” The festival was founded by Sterling Nelson, who served as the festival’s music director until retiring in 2010. He traveled around the country to bring traditional jazz groups and individual musicians to Evergreen to help the festival gain its reputation for excellence. Attendees sat in the Evergreen Elks Club ballroom, snacking on munchies and enjoying the music from Louis Ford and His New Orleans Flairs, Hot Tomatoes Dance Orchestra and more, while still others got on the dancefloor. The Elks patio was a beautiful, intimate place to listen to the Felonius Smith Trio, After Midnight and More. Still others enjoyed the bands performing at the Evergreen Lake House. The Evergreen Jazz Festival is intent on helping a new generation of jazz musicians, hosting clinics to help them hone their craft, so they can learn from some of the professionals. Maybe jazz great Louis Armstrong said it best – and the quote is on the festival brochure — “To jazz or not to jazz? There is no question.”

FROM PAGE 1

It’s the confluence of ragtime, blues, Dixieland, boogie-woogie, swing and big band into traditional or hot jazz. The music was endless at four venues in town July 29-31 with 11 bands playing numerous sets much to the delight of attendees. The festival featured favorites such as the Carl Sonny Leyland Trio and Joe Smith and The Spicy Pickles, while bringing in new groups such as the Dalton Ridenhour Trio from New York City. At Evergreen Christian Church, the gospel service Sunday morning performed by the Queen City Jazz Band with vocalist Wende Harston included favorites such as “Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho,” “Give Me That Old Time Religion” and “I’ll Fly Away.” As someone walking into the church said, “Nobody does this like she can,” referring to Harston. To add to the joyous celebration, Sandy Sturgeon brought out puppet “Grandma” and Gloria Aho brought out puppet “Jerome” to dance along to the music. “At Evergreen Christian Church, there’s Easter, Christmas and the Evergreen Jazz Festival,” Bob Cooper told about 125 people in attendance. It was a toe-tapping, hand-clapping, singing and dancing good time, and the clergy talked about the commonalities between jazz and religion: improvisation.

VOICES

Vote like the future of our country depends on it

T

he results of the June 28 primary election were good news for democracy in Colorado. In all the high-profile statewide races, the 2020-election-deniers lost. Kudos to all you unaffiliated and Republican voters who took the time to vote for the rational people. This means that Democratic candidates will be facing off against Republican candidates whose messages will be focused on something other than the Big Lie. They will doubtless talk a lot about what’s wrong with “The Democrats.” My Democratic friends also talk a lot about what’s wrong with “The Democrats.” I hear it all the time: “The Democrats just don’t get it.” “The Democrats need to wake up to reality.” The fact is that The Democrats are not monolithic. As always, there are those who want to see incremental change and those who think the time is ripe for transformational change. It’s

LINDA ROCKWELL

Columnist

also a fact that the latter are in a minority in Colorado and in the U. S. Congress. The threat of vetoes by Gov. Polis has held back several proposals from being considered by the legislature. Joe Manchin has a lot more power than Alexandria OcasioCortez. The gridlock in Washington can be maddening, so focus instead on what is happening here in Colorado and in Jefferson County. Democrats are getting things done. Our governor, other statewide officials, our legislature and our county commissioners have worked hard to create a better future for all their constituents. In the past year or so, they have bolstered public education at every level, codified reproductive rights, given more people access to health insurance, dedicated more resources to fire mitigation and forest health, increased the security of elections, passed gun safety measures, made the tax code fairer and tak-

en steps to fight climate change. Our all-mail ballot elections are a model for the nation. Balanced budgets and fiscal prudence are the norm. I fear that none of this will matter in November because the price of gas and groceries is through the roof. It’s tough on everyone — it’s important — but no politician can do much about it, in spite of what they may say. In the long term, issues matter more. Our country is dealing with serious problems — gun violence, domestic terrorism, economic inequality, racial and ethnic division, fire and drought brought on by global warming, homelessness and drug addiction, among them. As you consider how to cast your ballot in November, ask yourself which party is more likely to propose effective solutions, and then to act. Who will protect and expand the right to vote? Who will support renewable energy and help us decrease

our reliance on fossil fuels? Who will make sure that all people have access to appropriate health care? Who will ensure that our gay friends and family members continue to have the right to marry? Who will take on the gun lobby and put reasonable restrictions on assault weapons? Who will help families rise out of poverty? Who will take action to reduce the scourge of fentanyl? Even this partial list is long. The issues are complex with few simple answers, but I believe my party’s leaders strive every day to find real solutions to the problems faced by real people. We cannot tackle these problems through lower taxes, less regulation and cracking down on criminals, as most Republican candidates would have you believe. No matter how you feel about The Democrats, or whatever your party affiliation is, vote like the future of our country depends on it.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Evergreen — it’s all your water A Petition for Inclusion to the West Jefferson County Metro District was to be heard at the Evergreen Metro water board meeting on July 21. It was incorrectly advertised, and the hearing was poorly attended. The petition was made by Foothills Fire Protection District to include the property they, with Alpine Rescue Team, occupy at Hwy 40 & Hwy 74. The current occupants already receive water from Lookout Mountain Water District. The fact behind this petition is that it was made to enable a rezoning application that would result in those same emergency services being removed from that property and replaced by commercial development. The developer is Northstar Ventures, which initiated the petition and paid the associated legal fees. Let your ‘Hair’ down at Miners Alley

s Mark Twain once (supposedly) wrote, “history doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes.” Miners Alley Playhouse is proving that’s true with its summer production of the rock and roll classic, “Hair.” “There’s a timelessness to this show, which is unfortunate,” said Valerie Igoe, who plays

that is not already in the WJCMD. It is not about providing water and sewer service to the current occupants of the less than 2-acre property. Rather, the proposed commercial development on just this parcel would, by the developer’s own estimates, increase consumption by 100 times that of the current occupants’ needs. The projected use isestimated to total 2.4 million gallons per year, also requiring the equivalent of 60 “taps” to meet its demand. Beyond consumptive use, the WJCMD has already said that it lacks capacity to meet firefighting requirements for existing properties in this part of its district near El Rancho.Any new development here will be required to build their own water storage for that purpose. Additional, zoned but vacant commercial and residential properties in this area that are already within the WJCMD will exacerbate this capacitydeficitwhen built out. Fire suppression is relevant not only to individual properties, but to protection of the surrounding area. Adding this parcel, with its huge proposed demand, is unnecessary and disproportionately burdensome. West Jeff and Evergreen’s water come from the same source. It’s all your water, Evergreen.

There’s something that completely resonates.” Sponsored by The Buffalo Rose, “Hair” runs at Miners Alley, 1224 Washington Ave. in Golden, through Oct. 2. The show runs at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Directed by Len Matheo, and

featuring music direction by David Nehls and choreography by Angie Simmons, the show brings alive the 1960s counterculture with memorable songs, vivid costumes and a story that examines ideas that include identity, global responsibility and much more. “The shows that meant the most to me in the past have been the shows that really bring

Matheo said the production’s non-traditional and colorblind casting allows everything about the show to take on a layer of meaning. “There’re so many music scenes in the show, but in some ways, it’s like a French film,” Igoe said. “You’re thrown into all these characters’ relationships and lives… and see them build their tribe.” Regardless of if the show is something audience members are familiar with or not, Matheo is certain everyone will find something that moves them. “I want people to know what they’ll feel when they come to the show — for much of the show, they

Immerse yourself in ancient Egypt There’s been a string of immersive events in the Mile High City this year, but this is one I’m most excited about (history nerd that I am) — Immersive King Tut: Magic Journey to the Light, which is set up at Lighthouse Denver at 3900 Elati St., through Oct. 10. According to provided information, this event celebrates the 100th anniversary of archeologist Howard Carter’s discovery of the tomb of the legendary “boy king” in November 1922. Visitors will learn more about “Amduat, an important ancient Egyptian funerary text, thought to be the oldest known illustrated story that was depicted on the tombs of pharaohs.” For those who long to explore Egypt but may not get there, this is the next best thing.

Get your soul sizzle on with Larry Braggs and the CJRO There’s a reason soul music will never go out of style and if you are curious about that reason, all you need to do is listen to the vocals of Larry Braggs. The lead vocalist of Tower of Power for 14 years, he’s returning to the Arvada Center Amphitheatre after last year’s brilliant visit. Braggs and the Colorado Jazz Repertory Orchestra will be bringing their A Night of Sizzling Soul to the center, 6901 Wadsworth Blvd., at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 6. As someone who attended last year’s performance, I can attest that both the band and singer bring their A-game to all kinds of classics of the genre. Clarke’s Concert of the Week — The Wild Hearts Tour at Mission Ballroom Three of the best voices in modern alternative rock are joining forces for what will undoubtedly be a truly wonderful concert - one of the best in a season of killer bills. Julien Baker, Sharon Van Etten and Angel Olsen are the three members of the Wild Hearts Tour and will be performing at Mission Ballroom, 4242 Wynkoop St. in Denver, at 6 p.m. Aug. 7. All three artists have unleashed stellar releases this year — Baker just dropped a companion EP to last year’s “Little Oblivion,” while Olsen’s “Big Time” is a stirring and searing album that ranks amongst her best (and that’s no small thing). And Van Etten’s “We’ve Been Going About This All Wrong,” shows that six albums in, her pen remains as powerful as ever. With talents this strong, you don’t want to miss this show. RECREATION

It’s all downhill from here The Evergreen Town Race returns with special help from the community BY OLIVIA JEWELL LOVE OLOVE@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

The Evergreen Town Race is back after a two-year hiatus, and the Alpine Rescue Team is getting support from a climber rescued nearly a year ago. The downhill race takes place Aug. 7 with the 5k starting at 8 a.m. and the 10k starting at 8:45 a.m. The course is on Upper Bear Creek Road, and runners will be bused to the starting line starting at 6:30 a.m. Since the race is entirely downhill, it yields fast finishing times. In fact, the fastest 5k time recorded in Colorado was at the Evergreen Town Race in 1998 by Jason Hubbard with a time of 14:07, according to race coordinators. The race is a yearly fundraiser for the Alpine Rescue Team, a search and rescue team headquartered in El Rancho. The all-volunteer unit has been around for over 60 years and handles missions in Clear Creek, Jefferson and Gilpin counties. John Wells has been a member of the team for 35 years. He moved his way through the ranks of the team and was an operations coordinator for years. As he’s gotten older, Wells has moved into an administrative role where he helps manage events like the town race. Wells has put in countless hours on the Alpine Rescue Team over the years. “I think I’ve been on just shy of 600 rescues in my career,” he said. He said with the dangerous nature of many of the rescues, they are not soon forgotten. But the main thing that kept Wells going as a team member through the trauma was reuniting families. “As a team member you get a lot of satisfaction. ... You’re a part of bringing families back together,” he said. The Evergreen Town Race is the biggest fundraiser for the Alpine Rescue Team. Due to the nature of the group, there is not much extra time for events between training sessions and rescues. Kelly Brown, a corporate event planner based in Evergreen, is stepping in to help the group this year. She has a special bond with the team —they saved her life in September 2021. When climbing Mount Bancroft with friends, Brown misstepped and was rolled onto the rocks. “It was a life-changing day for me that day,” she said. The Alpine Rescue Team spent hours getting her safely off the mountain and to the hospital, where

she underwent multiple surgeries for her broken leg. Brown has spent the 11 months since the incident in physical therapy rehabbing the leg. After the team rescued her, Brown decided she would give back. As an avid outdoors person, Brown has done many races. When she decided to set her sights on the Evergreen Town Race, she knew it would be pivotal in her recovery. “I’ve had a lot of finish lines in my life … long distance, iron mans, marathons; they were just races. This is an exclamation point on a moment in my life. It’s going to be an emotional day,” she said. Not only will Brown be running the race, she’s putting her professional expertise to use by helping to organize it as well. She felt it was a natural way to give back. “They are volunteers and they go in precarious places and save lives. Planning a race is not what they would do everyday,” she said. Brown said giving back to the team and getting to know the community even more through planning the race has been a silver lining. “This is the good that’s coming out of that bad day,” she said. Registration for the race is open until 11:59 a.m. Aug. 6. Dogs and strollers that can make it on the bus to the starting line are welcome. Upper Bear Creek Road will be closed from Highway 74 to Yankee Creek Road from 7:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Aug. 7. There will be no parking available at the starting line. The finish line is near the Evergreen Lake House, where there will be food trucks, vendors and more for racers to enjoy. Register for the 5k and 10k at evergreentownrace.org. Buses for 5k participants will depart from Wilmot Elementary from 6:30-7:30 a.m., and until 8 a.m. from the Xcel Energy Frontage Road for the 10k. If you miss the bus, you miss the race!

Golden cyclists have themselves a merry little Christmas in July Hundreds participate in summer’s monthly bike cruise BY CORINNE WESTEMAN CWESTEMAN@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Jeremy Faulk, right, helps his son Connor, 4, before the family sets off on the July 26 Golden Bike Cruise from the Armory parking garage. The cruise, which is the last Tuesday of the month May through September, starts at the Armory parking garage and loops around through north Golden and back into downtown.

Despite the time of year, it was beginning to look a lot like Christmas recently in downtown and north Golden. Hundreds of cyclists donned their jingle bells, ugly holiday sweaters, Santa Claus hats, reindeer-antler headbands, festive socks and more for the “Christmas in July”-themed Golden Bike Cruise on July 26. The event, which is the last Tuesday of the month May through September, starts at the Armory parking garage and loops through north Golden before returning downtown. The Golden Bike Cruise also features music by a local band, Golden-based food and beer vendors, raffles for new bikes and fundraisers for local nonprofit partners. The monthly ride has a different theme each month, and organizers said this was first Christmas-themed one. Woody’s Wood Fired Pizza started the ride 15 or 16 years ago, but it’s changed organizers over the years. Now, Golden Community Commons, a subset of Calvary Church, has been hosting the ride for five or six years, organizers Peter Ewers and Jill Powers explained. Ewers summarized the entire event as: “Bikes, bands and brews.” Each event draws about 200-300 participants, and was recently named one of the best Denver-area social bike rides by 5280 Magazine. That’s how Heidi Pearcey and her family heard about it and made the trek down from Longmont because they “wanted to try it out,” she described. While Longmont has its own bike cruise that’s very well attended, Pearcey said it doesn’t feature food or music like the Golden one does. So, she appreciated that event atmosphere as the cyclists gathered near the Armory before setting off. Friends Cameron Keelan, Sofia Bermudez and Charlotte Godsall were also joining the cruise for the first time. Godsall lives in Golden, and Keelan and Bermudez recently moved here, so all three felt participating would be a great way to get involved in the community.

Plus, they also loved the theme. Keelan and Bermudez were sporting tall Christmas-themed socks with belts made of shiny tinsel-type material, and Godsall was rocking a Santa hat with a glittery red vest. The Pugmire and Birney families also went all-out on their outfits, donning everything from garland, a top hat, a holiday sweater, a Christmas onesie and Santa hats. Aaron and Karen Pugmire ride every month, recalling how they’ve been participating for at least six years — before they had children. They were enjoying the Christmas theme, saying other favorites of theirs have been superheroes, pirates, the ‘80s and zombies — which is the theme every September. Karen added that she appreciates any theme where the cyclists must use their imagination in planning their outfits. Their friends Rob and Sarah Birney of Arvada had decided to join the Pugmires for the first time on July 26. The Birneys’ first impression was that the cruise was a great event for families. Likewise, the Wohlers and Faulk families — who were also decked out for the occasion — described the cruise a great excuse to dress up. It’s also served as an opportunity for their young children to build confidence in their bike-riding skills, Rebecca Faulk said, adding “The kids love to ride their bikes.” The next cruise on Aug. 25 will be Minions-themed. The event starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Armory parking garage, and the ride begins at 6:30 p.m. For more information, visit visitgolden.com/event/the-golden-cruise/11582 or facebook.com/TheGoldenCruise.

If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, then taking a walk through most metro area communities can be a delightful treat for the eyes. Many communities have outdoor sculptures placed either in sculpture gardens or throughout the cities to provide beauty, create community, revitalize metropolitan areas and make people think. For those in charge of acquiring the sculptures, it’s vital work. “I think there are a lot of reasons why public sculpture is important,” City of Northglenn Arts, Culture and Community Manager Michael Stricker said. “Not only does it help beautify parks and public areas, but it builds a sense of identity and community. Our community has really embraced all of the public art as their own.” While public art also includes outdoor murals and other displays, sculptures come in all shapes and sizes, created out of every sort of material and in various genres from traditional to modern. And the best part is that viewing public sculptures is free. “Outdoor sculptures are like a museum without walls in a way,” explained Tim Vacca with the Greenwood Village-based Museum of Outdoor Arts. “Our mission is to make art part of everyday life where people are walking in public areas, and it might bring a pleasant surprise to

them. We want it to be accessible to all.” Tricia Rosenthal, president of Sculpture Evergreen, a nonprofit that has placed 42 permanent sculptures throughout Evergreen, called it an artistic imperative to place sculptures in the downtown area and in area parks. “They speak to people,” Rosenthal said. “It is fun for me to see that, and it’s pretty exciting. I’ve been to numerous places where many communities have decided this is something they want to do as part their community cultural enhancement, and people relate to the sculptures. There is something for everyone — especially with the pieces that change.” Some communities have sculptures that are displayed on a rotating basis along with their permanent collections. For Golden, which has extensive public sculptures throughout the city, the Public Art Committee believes sculptures contribute to community identity, civic pride and economic development, and allows the community to feel engaged with the city, according to Robin Fleischmann, Golden’s economic development manager. Sculptor Shohini Ghosh of Highlands Ranch agrees that public sculptures are a great and important way to introduce art into people’s lives. The sculptor, originally

from India, has work displayed as close as Evergreen, Hudson Gardens and the Denver Art Museum, and as far away as Topeka, Kansas; Edina, Minnesota; and even China. “Sculpture is a mode of expression,” she explained of her art. “The whole concept of expressing a whole idea in one form excites me. It’s not a canvas where you have a story visually developing. Sculpture is one idea, one moment, one emotion that you want to catch and make it permanent. Each sculpture has its own rapport with the public. That’s how it is supposed to be.”

Different styles Public-sculpture selection and tastes vary wherever you go. In Evergreen, for example, a committee selects the sculptures that are part of the rotating Sculpture Walk. Since Evergreen is not incorporated, the nonprofit Sculpture Evergreen needs to look for sites by working with private property owners and other entities that own area parks. Evergreen’s Sculpture Walk was started 28 years ago. “For us, it’s a grassroots thing,” Rosenthal explained. “Other than money from the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District and Colorado Creative Industries, everything is funded by donors. Also, in many ways, Evergreen is unique because of the environment we have.” The rural area makes selecting sites that enhance the sculptures more challenging, she added. In Northglenn, a committee of 50 people selects six sculptures for its rotating Art on Parade and invites the public to vote for their favorite, which is purchased by the city to add to its permanent collection of about 30. Northglenn started its collection in 2000. Stricker said Northglenn is committed to public art and putting it throughout the city, with Art on Parade located at Eleanor M. Wyatt Centennial Park to create a destination feel. The permanent collection is throughout the city and continues to grow. Golden’s sculpture collection is on temporary hold as the Public Art Committee evaluates its current collection and determines what sculptures should be added. Many of the 34 sculptures are along Clear Creek and Washington Avenue. Golden also has what it calls the Itty Bitty Art Project, which includes 14 tiny sculptures. The commission wants to begin diversifying its sculpture collection since a large number of the sculptures are traditional bronze donated to the city by other entities, Fleischmann said. The Museum of Outdoor Arts’ permanent sculpture

Making sculpture relevant Ghosh is excited that public sculptures have caught on in many cities in the United States and abroad in part to help rejuvenate municipalities. Historically, a sculpture was put in town squares to help identify the town, and public sculpture is continuing that mission, she added. “I love that this art form is used as a tool to help cities as they

go through the revival process of bringing a city back to life,” Ghosh said. She wants to see sculptures generate discussion among those who see them. “I’ve seen people stop and contemplate sculptures,” she explained. “Even in their hurried day, most people don’t just walk by. They give (the sculpture) a moment of thought. Art is a very

strong form of communication other than writing or talking. (Sculptors) express directly from our souls — unadulterated, honest expression.” For those who help bring public art to their communities, its importance is without measure. “(Sculptures) really reach into people’s hearts,” Rosenthal said. “That’s something worth preserving.”

Sarge the husky eyed the plastic pool in front of him suspiciously. Twenty seconds later, hesitation forgotten, he was lying underneath a mountain of suds as volunteers re-

minded him what a good boy he was. The annual Super Sudsy Dog Wash was held on July 30 to benefit the Evergreen Animal Protective League. Volunteers at the event washed 70 dogs and raised over $1,400 for EAPL, TallGrass Salon and Spa manager Michele Lefebvre said. with the animals. “I feel like (my horse) understands me more than anyone else has ever understood me,” an equine therapy client said in a video produced by Mustard Seed Ranch. “Building this relationship with Bandit has helped me rebuild my relationship with my parents.” As a licenced therapist with Mustard Seed Ranch, Nicklas is trained in Natural Lifemanship, which includes equine therapy. For her, part of what makes working with horses so unique is the fact that they provide “bio-feedback,” meaning that they are easy to read when interacting with a client. This helps clients be more aware of how they are communicating. “I work a lot with kids who have experienced trauma, and I think their self worth and feeling loved by something and worth something when maybe they didn’t feel that way coming in has been really remarkable,” Nicklas said.

For Nicklas, this work is a labor of love. She grew up around horses and has always considered them a “safe healing space,” so in her sessions she looks to share this healing with clients. Equine therapy is larger than Nicklas, though. Mustard Seed Ranch has locations in other parts of Colorado and California, but their work in Evergreen is the product of collaboration with local nonprofits. Bear Paw Connections provides the horses and space for the organization and Resilience1220, which offers free therapy for youth ages 12 to 20, helps connect clients with the ranch. “Although it seems very different and unknown I think you’ll be very surprised about the effects the horses have on us. Just being in their presence is healing, but when we combine that with all the different activities we do and building that relationship with their horse, [clients] are surprised by how it translates into their daily lives,” Nicklas said. More information about equine therapy can be found at mustardseedranch.org.

DOG WASH FROM PAGE 19

Ce 41 lebr Ye ati ar ng s

The event was a community effort. TallGrass sponsored the fundraiser, Ambary Gardens in Kittredge donated the space and water for the wash, and the Garden’s adjunct business, the Art of Giving, donated 15% of the proceeds from the event to the shelter. “We’re all willing to give back to the community,” Ambary Gardens owner Steven Cohen said. The event did more than raise money for EAPL, though. The shelter brought a number of the dogs EAPL has available for adoption to the event. One was adopted and adoption applications were submitted for two others.

Cathleen Timmons, who has worked with EAPL for 14 years, knows firsthand how these donations and adoptions can change the lives of EAPL dogs. Timmons was the cashier at the event, assisted by her two dogs, Remy and Timmy, both adopted from EAPL. Other volunteers at the event included TallGrass employees and their families in addition to other community members. “I love seeing the dogs interact with the volunteers. They have these big smiles, or they’re scared, but by the time they get out they’re so happy and just excited to be getting dried off,” TallGrass employee Shannon Marinos said. EAPL is not supported by taxes and relies on donations and volunteers to operate. Funds raised from the dog wash will go toward the

Evergreen Lake North Trail construction delayed One bid rejected because cost too high; EPRD to learn why others didn’t bid on the project BY DEB HURLEY BROBST DBROBST@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

Work to rebuild the Evergreen Lake North Trail likely will be delayed after the Evergreen Park & Recreation District rejected the one bid it received for the project. Executive Director Cory Vander Veen told the EPRD board on July 26 that officials are talking with construction companies that didn’t bid on the project to find out why. He hopes EPRD can refine the project’s scope and rebid the project soon to be more successful. Vander Veen said the one bid that was submitted was “substantially higher” than the $4.5 million EPRD has to spend on the project, which will create a 10-foot wide concrete walkway along Evergreen Parkway and a soft-surface trail at the lakeshore. He declined to define “substantially higher.” Initial conversations with construction companies showed the timeline to get the work done — which the board had hoped would start in September — was not realistic, which seems to be a factor in the lack of bids, Vander Veen said. Some companies have projects scheduled out a year.

A rendering of what the Evergreen Lake North Trail will look like after construction.

“We will have to go back to drawing board on the schedule and timing,” he said. In the meantime, district officials have met with the Colorado Department of Transportation, Jefferson County, City of Denver and the Evergreen Metro District to inform them of the latest developments, Vander Veen said. He said EPRD was not anticipat-

ing any loss of grant money to pay for the project because it hopes to rebid the project. Grants from the Denver Regional Council of Governments, Colorado the Beautiful and local groups including the Evergreen Metropolitan District and the Evergreen Legacy Fund will pay for the work. Board member Monty Estis said he was concerned that construction

prices would continue to rise if the project is delayed into 2023. The Evergreen Lake North Trail was built in 1987, and in 2016, a portion of the trail collapsed, closing it for 19 months. EPRD staff managed to shore up the supports under the trail to reopen it. EPRD has spent several years obtaining grants and moving the project forward with the support of the other stakeholders.

Falling Tree kills young boy in Jeffco Warning signs to look for in your own yard BY BOB WOOLEY BWOOLEY@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

On July 15, a young boy was struck by a falling tree in Jefferson County. “With heavy hearts, we’re sad to report that the 4-year-old boy who was struck by a fallen tree has died from his injuries,” said a tweet from the Jeffco Sheriff’s Office later that day. Jeffco Sheriff’s Office Spokesperson Jacki Kelley later said that South Metro Fire Rescue had received a call early that morning with a report of the injury. Kelley said the boy, who was visiting from out of town with his family, had been slacklining in the yard with other children before the accident occurred. How safe are your trees? If homeowners or renters are concerned about the health and safety of trees in their yard, the website arborday.orgprovides tips to help identify unhealthy or potentially failing trees. “A tree with structural defects likely to cause failure is considered a high risk or hazardous tree if it could strike a target,” according to the website. A target can be a vehicle, building or a place where people gather,

like a bench, picnic table or fire pit. However, it could also literally be any place a falling tree in your yard could strike you. Arborday.org advises homeowners to inspect trees in their yard once a year and after severe storms. Inspection may allow you time to correct any problems with a tree before they create serious risk. Inspections can be done at any time of year, whether leaves are present or not. What to look for A thorough examination of a tree includes roots, trunk flare, branches and branch unions. The general condition of the tree can sometimes be determined by the appearance of dead twigs, branches and small offcolor leaves. In general, healthy trees will have strong branches and full-sized leaves, but don’t be too quick to judge overall health by the appearance of lush, green leaves at the crown of the tree, as defects in the trunk or branches can still exist. Know your trees One thing arborday.org recommends is knowing the type of trees you have and the characteristics those trees are likely to display. For example, a University of Maryland Extension fact sheet cites Cytospora, a fungal infection that causes cankers in tree branches and trunks as being one of the most damaging diseases in Colorado Blue Spruce trees.

Dry, dead branches are one sign of a tree that could be failing. PHOTO BY BOB WOOLEY

The virus also is know to be extremely damaging to Aspen trees. A similar study by Nicholas Brazee at the University of Massachusetts Amherst points out that shade and wet weather allow the fungalpathogen to accelerate. So, winter and spring weather conditions can especially hard on trees that are infected. High-risk defects Seven main types of defects offer visible signs that a tree may be failing and unpredictable, creating greater chances of breaking or falling, according to arborday.org. These defects include dead wood,

cracks, weak branch unions, decay, cankers, root problems and poor tree form. “A dead branch and treetop that is already broken off (‘hanger’ or ‘widow maker’) is especially dangerous,” the website states. You should act immediately if a dead branch is hanging or lodged in the top of a tree, a tree is dead, you find deep splits or cracks in the stem or trunk or advanced decay is present. Do the best you can to determine the extent of any damage that may require immediate action. And when in doubt, call a professional tree service for assistance.

Stars and swipes SOUTH TURKEY CREEK – Peter Patriot’s Independence Day party was primo, a full-tilt freedom fest featuring four score of sovereign citizens all tipping their tankards like it was 1776. Come dawn of the 5th, however, Peter discovered that some traitorous Tory had liberated a big wad of his cash, one of his credit cards and a pair of AirPods. Peter was able to track the AirPods to a pawn shop in Aurora, which information he passed along to the Jeffco constabulary, which was able to identify the thief as one Letitia Loyalist, a treasonous trollop not found on Peter’s ordained and established guest list. While Letitia’s current whereabouts are unknown, officers arranged the return of Peter’s AirPods and will charge the perfidious pilferer with pernicious pawning if and when she can be located. Over-ruled PINE – Mr. and Mrs. Homeowner have a problem, and they don’t expect any help from their HOA.

Indeed, the Homeowners told deputies on July 9, their problem is an influential HOA board member who persistently potties his pup on their property. When the Homeowners sought permission to put up Private Property signs, Influential denied their petition to post. And when they flatly asked him to keep himself and his canine out of their yard, he’d “puffed out his chest” and declared that he’s “allowed” by “committee bylaws” to invade their space at will “to make sure you’re following the rules.” Mr. and Mrs. Homeowner didn’t want to press charges for fear that would only “make things worse,” but they did want deputies to document the situation in case it gets worse anyway. Ex posts facto EVERGREEN – It’s getting to be a regular thing. The HOA president keeps erecting signs telling residents “where hikers should walk,” and a person or persons unknown keeps stealing the signs. Just days before, the HOA president explained to deputies on July 5, no fewer than

four of the trail markers had been despoiled, three of them stolen outright and the fourth removed from its post and left in the dirt. If there was any good news to tell, it was that the 50 pounds of concrete anchoring two of the signs meant that the HOA president wouldn’t have to replace those two posts. He said he would, however, be investing in cameras to surveil any subsequent signage. The case is unresolved, and the trails are temporarily unregulated. Vacation vexation BROOK FOREST – Taking the good advice of a friend, on July 8 the visiting Sunshine State resident decided to sample Colorado’s more congenial climate along the pinescented paths of Maxwell Falls. Unfortunately, while Sunshine State was busy admiring the forest primeval, somebody else was busy busting out the front passenger window of her rented Kia and making off with its contents. Of particular concern to Sunshine State was the theft of her Michael KorsCrossbody

purse which contained, among other things, a “cheetah-print lanyard” holding her ready cash, her credit cards and her Alligator State-issued ID. It also contained an AirTag, which indicated that the purse was somewhere on Spruce Lane. With a nonrefundable homebound flight departing DIA at 4 a.m. on the 9th, Sunshine State insisted that deputies take themselves immediately to Spruce Lane, apprehend the thief and retrieveher belongings. Deputies pointed out that Spruce Lane is occupied by a “townhome complex” and they couldn’t very well “go door to door accusing people of theft,” meaning that her lucre laden lanyard would likely stay lost until they found a better trail to follow. Sunshine State “was not pleased with that answer.” Sheriff’s Calls is intended as a humorous take on some of the incident call records of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office for the mountain communities. Names and identifying details have been changed. All individuals are innocent until proven guilty.
