There’s something extra special about Evergreen on rodeo weekend.

Conifer may get a free-standing library as soon as late 2023.

The Jefferson County Public Library board of trustees on June 16 put $2.5 million into its 2023 Capital Improvement Plan for what is named the “Conifer opportunity.”

After a community-engagement effort to find out what residents want and need, library officials hope to find space “in an existing commercial building for tenant finish or a building refurbish,” according to the May 19 board meeting minutes.

The Jefferson County commissioners must approve the library district’s budget. The Library Board has not heard any recommendations nor made any decisions on whether to move the library.

The current 9,000-square-foot Conifer library has been housed at Conifer High School since the school opened in 1996 and is shared with high school students and staff. It is open to the public after school and

the thousands who packed the two Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association rodeo shows at the El Pinal Rodeo Grounds — it’s hometown Western fun.

True to this year’s theme “On the Road Again,” the rodeo, in its 56th year, is bigger and better than ever, according to Bryan McFarland, chairman of the Evergreen Rodeo Association’s board of directors.

“We’re happy to support the community and to support the western values of the rodeo,” he said before the parade.

The parade is the place to see your neighbors, get some candy for the kids, and watch entries from horses and cars to floats and bands. As one person put it, Evergreen’s parade is iconic Americana.

The rodeo is more than a show — starting with the booth at the entrance with cowboy hats for sale to every imaginable kind of food

to vendor booths. Rodeo attendees come from far and near to see a PRCA event that doesn’t disappoint.

Here’s a look at some of Saturday’s fun: 7:15 a.m.: The pancake breakfast in the downtown parking lot — prepared by Blue Spruce Kiwanis — is underway with hungry people lined up to get pancakes, sausage, milk, juice and coffee. Kiwanis bought 60 pounds of pancake mix, expecting to serve several thousand pancakes.

The group wanted to find a lot of hungry pancake eaters because proceeds from the breakfast go to Kiwanis charities.

9:15 a.m.: Families stream into downtown Evergreen from Meadow Drive, Highway 73 and Evergreen Parkway. Chairs that had lined the road since early morning are filling up. Excitement is in the air as parade-goers anticipate the parade

10:15 a.m.: The American Legion Post 2001 color guard, which leads the parade, stops at the announcer’s booth across from the Little Bear where attendees stand for the national anthem.

Toman laughed as he said being the marshal made him feel old. “This is wonderful,” he added. “It’s great to see downtown Evergreen full of people.” Toman was instrumental in the formation of what is now the Evergreen Rodeo Association in the 1960s and in acquiring the El Pinal Rodeo Grounds in 1974.

Daisy’s mom, Rae Peters, said this was her first time at the parade, and she arrived at 8 a.m. to make sure she had a good seat.

11 a.m.: Bill Lee, known as Santa to some, walks along the parade route dressed as a prospector with burros Blaster and Jeb, and dog Deacon. He said he’s been part of the Evergreen Rodeo Parade on and off for a dozen years.

on weekends during the school year, and this summer, hours have been extended on a trial basis.

Members of the Conifer Area Council, who have been asking for a free-standing library for more than a year, thanked the board for adding money to the budget for a library in Conifer.

“I want to say that the Conifer Area Council and most of the Conifer community are very grateful for your attention and funding for the Conifer library,” said Punky Kiefer of Conifer, who has spearheaded the CAC’s effort.

CAC Secretary Marilyn Saltzman said the CAC wanted to partner with JCPL to help with community engagement, noting that library officials could give a presentation at a CAC townhall meeting and provide questions for the CAC’s comprehensive survey. CAC also has an extensive email list that JCPL can use, she added.

In 2021, a Conifer Area Council survey found that 93% of 552 respondents wanted a full-service library in a separate building, with the majority saying it could provide longer and more convenient hours, easier access than the steps leading to the high school, and better parking.

JCPL Executive Director Donna Walker said in an email that JCPL first learned in March of a planned change to Conifer High School’s hours, which would curtail the number of hours the Conifer library

is open to the public. Jeffco Public Schools intends to move high school start times later in the morning beginning in fall 2023, with school ending around 4 p.m.

Currently, Conifer library doesn’t open until 3 p.m. on weekdays, 30 minutes after school ends.

“The proposed (school time) change would affect the hours that we are able to offer the community as a public library location,” Walker said in an email. “Because of this, JCPL moved Conifer Library Service forward in its Facility Master Plan and has included money in the 2023 proposed budget plan for this as a new capital project.”

Once JCPL has community-engagement input, leaders will write a program of service, look at pricing options, and bring the board a recommendation and ask for a decision, according to the minutes from the May 19 board meeting.

Walker said in an email that JCPL is in the early planning process, so no decision has been made about the library’s location or size.

Kiefer found that Conifer is the only library in Jefferson County that doesn’t have its own building, and most have undergone extensive remodeling since their inception.

The Evergreen library, which was built in 1993, will get $3.5 million in interior improvements in 2023, and the Columbine library recently went through a major renovation.

These are the two libraries closest to Conifer, and patrons drive there for more comprehensive services. Some also drive to the Bailey library in Park County.

NEWS BRIEFS a man who was kneeling, tying his shoe. As they walked past him, he confronted them with a handgun.

The man ordered the wife to the ground and put a nylon leash around her neck, then ordered both victims to come with him, the sheriff’s office said. At one point, the husband was able to take the handgun away from the man.

During the attempted kidnapping, the news release said, both victims realized they knew the man, though they didn’t immediately recognize him because he had altered his appearance and disguised himself.

Jeffco investigators have learned that Endsley has a history of harassing the wife, and a restraining order was issued against him, the news release said.

The First Judicial District Attorney’s Critical Incident Response Team — a multi-law enforcement agency investigative team — is conducting the officer-involved shooting investigation.

Suspect in custody after attempted kidnapping An Evergreen man has been taken into custody after an incident near Fox Hollow Golf Course in Lakewood on June 17 in which a husband and wife were the victims of an attempted kidnapping.

Kerry Endsley, 73, a real estate agent, is facing possible charges of second-degree kidnapping, felony menacing and violating a restraining order, according to a release from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the sheriff’s office: JeffCom dispatch received a 911 call at 8:10 a.m. from a hiker saying he was witnessing two other hikers being held at gunpoint by a man.

Deputies located the victims and learned the man had left the area, but he was located nearby, and deputies confronted him at gunpoint.

He didn’t comply with deputies’ commands and pulled a weapon, later determined to be a stun gun, from his waistband and pointed it at deputies.

A deputy shot his gun, missing the man, and a second deputy hit the man with a Taser. He was taken to a hospital after complaining of

injuries from the Taser, the sheriff’s office said.

After the man was taken into custody, investigators learned the husband and wife, who were hiking along a trail, came across

by Xcel power outages Xcel customers in Evergreen are frustrated that their electricity has been going out for hours at a time without warning.

They have taken to social media

to air their concerns, and they have called Xcel and the Public Utilities Commission to complain. They are frustrated because they say Xcel has not forewarned them of the outages.

Xcel in a letter to customers apologized for the “significant inconvenience,” provided more information about the outages and shared steps it was taking to minimize them. The letter says Xcel has made temporary changes to the electric system in the area as it improves a nearby substation and installs new poles.

“The substation work is expected to be complete in approximately two weeks, which should further reduce the chances of outages,” the letter said. “We are working to expedite that work if possible.”

Xcel also said some outages have been related to efforts to reduce wildfire risk. When there is a high risk of wildfires, Xcel operates its system more conservatively.

“With this more cautious approach to managing the system, when an issue on the system is detected, such as a tree branch contacting a power line, the lines are de-energized until crews can patrol the line and ensure it’s safe to restore service,” the letter said.

“This process helps reduce fire risks but can cause customers to experience more or longer outages.”

CANYON COURIER MILESTONES — EDUCATION ACHIEVEMENTS Christian Treat was awarded a doctor of medicine degree from the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons on May 18 in New York City. Treat and his family celebrated graduation with the first in-person commencement ceremony at Columbia University since the COVID-19 pandemic began two years ago. Dr. Treat will begin his residency program in emergency medicine at Stony Brook Hospital, a Level 1 Trauma Center in Long Island, New York.

Treat received a master of science degree in public health from Johns Hopkins University in 2015, is a 2013 graduate of Bucknell University and a 2009 graduate of Clear Creek High School. He is the son of Rebecca and R.C. Treat of Evergreen and resides with his wife, Meaghan, and their two children in Port Jefferson, New York.

Now is a perfect time to remind people of the dangers of swimming pools for toddlers

M

y grandtwins, Rose and Lars, are now 27 months old. They are about the same age that my nephew Christopher was when he was found in my sister and brother-inlaw’s swimming pool.

I have not previously written about, nor shared in public, the details of this pool tragedy.

Even though the death of my nephew occurred over 35 years ago, I am moved to write about it now.

Why? Two reasons: 1) Because the broad swath of heat waves has given the media another opportunity to try to persuade, plea and beg the adults in the room to realize the dangers of swimming pools And 2) Because there is no better time than this moment for my personal public service pool announcement as I try to prevent another drowning, like what our family has suffered.

How Christopher got into the pool is not a mystery.

He was happy, always on the move, eager to explore life.

He was a typical, spirited, inquisitive, gorgeous, healthy toddler.

Some of the details of that day are a bit faded, but the gist of my memory is that my sister was in the house tending to her newest baby who was only a few months old.

Her husband was in the yard, but out of view of the pool.

Through some totally understandable miscommunication or misunderstanding, these loving young parents had not realized they had made a fateful mistake in believing/ assuming/were certain that the

other parent was the one responsible for overseeing their toddler for those particular few mo-

ments.

Where the never-ending heartbreak begins is with the events that led up to that summer day.

At the time, my sister and her husband had recently moved into a newly built home in Oklahoma.

They had left New York for a job opportunity, and it wasn’t too long before they realized they wanted relief from the oppressive heat and humidity.

They began planning for the installation of an in-ground pool.

My wise father said he had told them in no uncertain terms, and on multiple occasions, that this was a bad idea.

He told them not to have a pool while the babies were so little.

He wasn’t the only adult in the room advising them against a pool in their backyard.

He understood their desire to have a pool. We had an in-ground pool in New York while I was a child, and we grew up all the better for having that luxurious joy and exercise outlet.

The difference is my siblings and I were water savvy the day my parents had the enormous silver-colored tanker come into our backyard in order to fill our pool with water.

We basically grew up on the same beaches on Long Island, just like my father had as a child. My parents had taught us all how to swim as youngsters, and even gave me and some of my other siblings swim-

ming lessons in a community pool.

Before my parents’ own pool was functional, not only did we all know how to swim, we knew the fundamentals of safety at the beach and at the pool.

But this was not the same for Christopher.

My sister and brother-in-law went ahead with their pool installation, even though my sister was then pregnant with son number two, and Christopher was about 2 ½ years old.

Old enough to start swimming lessons.

As the digging for their pool began and my father’s concerns grew ever stronger, this pool project began to alarm me too. Back then, my daughter Jesse was just a few months younger than Christopher, with a similar nature: super active, alert, curious, precious as all get-out.

As the pool project continued, the rains in Oklahoma came in spurts.

Over some weeks’ time, the wet ground around the pool only served to delay the installation of the cement footings for the protective fence that was intended to safely enclose the pool.

But there was no safety to be had for Christopher. There was no successful resuscitation.

I am now older than my father was when he lost his grandson. I prevent myself from going too deeply into the memories, wanting not to fathom the grief and suffering my father endured over the loss of his grandson, knowing he wondered many a sleepless night what else he could have said or done to stop my sister from digging that pool.

The shock of Christopher’s death remains as clear as that pool water.

Oh, those summer nights at the Arvada Center

olorado is home to plenty of well-known — even world famous — concert venues, but some of the best shows I’ve seen have been at the numerous venue gems sprinkled all over the metro area. Take the Arvada Center’s Outdoor Amphitheater, which provides some lovely summer night skylines without the massive queues and uphill climbs.

The 2022 Summer Concert Series at the Arvada Center, 6901 Wadsworth Blvd., is one of the strongest yet, with local favorites that are part of the fabric of summer — like the Colorado Symphony — and national touring acts like Dawes, Madeleine Peyroux and Melissa Etheridge.

We spoke to Marcus E. Turner, director of communications and audience services at the center, about the season and what audiences can expect.

What was it like to be planning a full series again?

We have expanded this series to include more concerts than we’ve had in previous years. Concerts are not just an important aspect of the Arvada Center’s slate of programming but are a key component in the Denver metro cultural scene. It is exciting for us to play our part in adding a variety of different acts for concert lovers to experience the summer.

For some Ride the Rockies participants, those final miles through Clear Creek and Jefferson counties on June 17 were the literal home stretch.

About 1,100 cyclists from 49 states and nine countries made the six-day, 436-mile trek from Copper Mountain to Golden. Of course, Colorado cyclists had a homefield advantage.

One cyclist peeled off at Genesee’s Buffalo Overlook to go home, and Golden’s Russell Roundtree jokingly recalled stopping by his house to grab a cool drink before heading to the finish line.

On June 17, cyclists started their final day in Breckenridge, went over Loveland Pass, through Clear Creek County, along U.S. 40 through El Rancho and Genesee to reach Golden’s Parfet Park.

While the route changes every year, Ride the Rockies has been in Golden before.

The Malletts took turns over the six-day trip — one drove the car while the other biked. Ryan did Days 1, 3 and 6; Kimberly rode Days 2 and 4; and they both rode part of Day 5.

Ryan was a first-time Ride the

Rockies participant, so Kimberly let him pick which days he wanted to do, she explained.

Kimberly has now done the ride three times, and described how she’s met friends that she and Ryan now go cycling with regularly.

“We have more people to ride with

now,” she said of making friends on the six-day ride. “ … It’s a ride, not a race. There’s lot of camaraderie and support — people cheering each other on.”

the parade route. The head duck said he was having fun though the costume was very hot.

11:35 a.m.: Evergreen Fire/Rescue’s fire trucks end the parade, giving those in the crowd a good soaking — a mainstay of the parade. Molly Ottren and Lawson Essig brought their umbrellas to the parade in case of rain, and once they saw the drenching that was coming, the umbrellas came in handy.

12:30 p.m.: Most of the crowds are gone from downtown Evergreen, though restaurants are crowded as hungry parade-goers aren’t ready to leave the fun yet.

3:25 p.m.: At the El Pinal rodeo grounds, the gates have been open for 25 minutes, and Daniel Cook takes a turn on the mechanical bull. Cook said he’s a rookie who has started competing at the rodeos at the Greeley and Elizabeth Stampedes.

3:40 p.m.: Participants in Workshops in the Woods woodworking classes for kids, sell their work at a booth. They had pens, key chains, jigsaw puzzles, cutting boards and more, explaining that they start with small woodworking projects and progress to more difficult ones.

4 p.m.: Makenzie Hodge, 9 months old, has a pink cowgirl hat on her head. The youngster, the daughter of Michelle and Luke Hodge and granddaughter of Gary Hodge, has rodeo in her blood since her dad and granddad are on the Evergreen Rodeo

4:15 p.m.: Frankie Maresh sells cowboy hats just inside the entry gate. Maresh of Houston has been selling hats for 30 years at the Evergreen Rodeo, and rodeo officials believe he has the most longevity of any vendor there.

4:30 p.m.: Deb and Kent Carter of Platteville, Colorado, sit in lawn chairs above the stands — a popular spot for rodeo attendees. Kent, a 1973 Evergreen High School graduate, remembers people watching the rodeo from their truck beds in the rodeo’s early years. The couple said they hadn’t been to the Evergreen Rodeo in a long time, but things worked out so they could attend this year.

4:35 p.m.: Brave 5- to 7-year-olds

are lifted onto the backs of some fast and feisty sheep for the annual Mutton Bustin’ event. The tykes are scored, getting ribbons and trophies to the thunderous applause of the crowd.

4:45 p.m.: Cortney Clabaugh of Lakewood entertains the crowd with trick riding.

5:15 p.m.: The rodeo begins in earnest with bull riding in what announcer Doug Mathis calls “armjerking, neck-snapping action.” The crowd continues to pour into the rodeo grounds and lines are long for the array of food available: turkey legs, hamburgers, barbecue, pizza, hot dogs, funnel cakes and more.

7:30 p.m.: The rodeo grounds are much quieter as workers clean up — and prepare to do it all again on Sunday for the matinee rodeo.

ver wanted to take a road trip across the state without slogging through an hours-long drive on highways?

Residents can let public transportation take the wheel on trips to places near and far, including a new long-distance shuttle line that runs from the Denver area to places such as Idaho Springs, Frisco and Vail.

Other bus routes can take you to Fort Collins, Longmont, Colorado Springs and even Grand Junction.

And public transportation can also take you to some destinations in the suburbs you may not be familiar with.

Here’s a look at the public transportation routes that run through these places and more — with a rundown of some attractions along the way.

RTD in the suburbs You might not think twice when you watch a Regional Transportation District, or RTD, bus roll past, but the bus and rail systems can drop riders close to many scenic areas around town.

Olde Town Arvada, for example, sits along the RTD G Line, a commuter rail line that runs between Union Station in the downtown Denver area and Wheat Ridge. As opposed to RTD’s light rail lines, the commuter rail lines travel at faster speeds.

The historical atmosphere and “social hub” feeling in Olde Town Arvada — near Ralston Road and Wadsworth Boulevard — make it a great place to visit, said Austin Nettleton, a RTD spokesperson.

“That’s pretty much one of my favorite spots to go to — there’s so many cool food and drink places,” said Nettleton, who used to live near that area, in Broomfield, and would go down to the RTD Olde Town Arvada station.

Meanwhile, the N Line can take you from Denver through the north and east suburbs of Commerce City, Thornton and North-

The N rail line largely weaves through residential areas, but the Northglenn-112th Station — near York Street and 112th Avenue — sits within walking distance of Carpenter Park, a place that offers a laundry list of activities.

“They’ve got a pretty cool skate park there (and) a huge outdoor park. A boathouse, you can rent those little paddle boats. And they’ve got a huge rec center there too,” Nettleton said.

(Paddle boats have been unavailable due to a staffing shortage, the City of Thornton’s website said as of June 12.)

Other Carpenter Park amenities include a carousel, horseshoe pits, sand volleyball courts and a “sprayground” with a spray pad for enjoying in warm weather, according to Thornton’s website.

Near Denver’s southeast edge sits RTD’s Dayton Station along Interstate 225, where riders can exit at a trail connection that leads to Cherry Creek State Park.

“There’s even a bridge that goes across 225 to take you to the mountain bike trails,” Nettleton said, referring to a mountain bike skills area along the paths.

Another destination in the suburbs is Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre, a large outdoor concert venue a short walk from RTD’s Arapahoe at Village Center light rail station.

The venue in Greenwood Village hosts well-known music artists and sits close to Arapahoe Road and Interstate 25.

Those who don’t live close to a rail station can bike, take a ride-sharing service such as Lyft or catch an RTD bus to get to a station.

Getting farther north If you’ve been to Boulder, you may have seen the FLEX bus, a non-RTD transit line that serves several places in Colorado’s northern Front Range corridor.

The FLEX route includes stops between Fort Collins, Loveland, Berthoud, Longmont and Boulder.

In light of changing federal mask policy for transportation, masks might not be required in your area on public transit.

Austin Nettleton, a spokesperson for RTD in Denver and surrounding areas, said masks are not required for all passengers and drivers on RTD transportation.

“We encourage and recommend facial coverings, but they are not required or enforced for employees and customers,” Nettleton said.

Anna Russo, a spokesperson

for the Transfort transit system in Fort Collins that extends to Boulder, also said masks are not required for all passengers and drivers.

“We do encourage people to wear masks, but it’s not a requirement,” Russo said.

“We ask that you don’t ride Transfort if you have COVID symptoms,” she added.

Bob Wilson, a Colorado Department of Transportation spokesperson, said passengers are not required to wear masks but drivers are on Bustang routes.

The FLEX bus route that runs between Fort Collins, Loveland, Berthoud, Longmont and Boulder is currently “fare free.”

“So someone could board the FLEX in Boulder and get all the way up to Fort Collins for free,” said Anna Russo, a spokesperson for Transfort, the part of the City of Fort Collins government that operates FLEX. All the routes that are operated

by Transfort, which includes FLEX and MAX and the numbered routes in Fort Collins, are currently free, according to Russo.

Transfort started providing service for free around spring 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic reached Colorado, Russo said.

It was an effort to “help with the pandemic and just support people who might need some financial assistance getting around town,” Russo said. “But then we’ve just continued it through up until now. We might go back to charging fares in the future, but at this time, we don’t have a date for that.”

Officials are conducting a study of Transfort’s revenue sources and costs, and they are looking at the feasibility of continuing to operate fare free permanently, but it’s still unclear, Russo said.

Downtown Fort Collins is also known as one of the places that inspired Disneyland’s Main Street USA, according to Russo.

Visitors can take a self-guided walking tour of downtown’s history, learning about the “architecture, wild characters and iconic historic sites,” according to the tourism website VisitFtCollins.com.

If you’re seeking some color, you can swing by Colorado State University’s Annual Flower Trial Garden.

The purpose of the trial garden program is to evaluate the performance of different annual plant cultivars under the unique Rocky Mountain environmental conditions, according to CSU’s website.

“They plant different varieties and different colors of annual flowers, and it’s open to the public. You can walk through them and look,” Russo said.

Nearby in Loveland, visitors can check out the Loveland Museum of Art and History, the Benson Sculpture Garden and the Swim Beach area at Lake Loveland.

“And they can get to those destinations by transferring to City of Loveland transportation from the FLEX,” Russo said.

In the Boulder area, the FLEX line ends at the University of Colorado Boulder campus.

“So that’s a nice area to walk around, and there’s also a museum of natural history on their campus,” Russo said.

Ways to traverse the state CDOT’s Bustang routes make up a network of paths that run through northern, western, southern and part of eastern Colorado.

Additionally, the “Bustang Outrider” routes go between Lamar, Pueblo and Colorado Springs; Alamosa and Pueblo; Durango and Grand Junction; Crested Butte and Denver; Craig and Denver; and Telluride and Grand Junction, according to the website.

Just last month, the state launched another option for travel along the Interstate 70 mountain corridor with the introduction of Pegasus, CDOT’s new express shuttle that began providing passenger service May 27.

Pegasus was to depart year-round from Union Station in Denver, stopping at the Denver Federal Center in Lakewood along with stops in Idaho Springs, Frisco, Vail and Avon, according to a CDOT news release.

A Pegasus shuttle seats up to 11 people, is wheelchair accessible and is equipped with USB ports, power outlets and Wi-Fi. Each vehicle also has luggage storage, bike racks and ski or snowboard containers, according to the news release.

Each Bustang bus is equipped with a restroom, bike racks, free Wi-Fi, power outlets and USB ports, and there are also a wheelchair lift and two wheelchair securement areas on each bus, according to the Bustang website.

Pegasus service runs on weekends, but CDOT plans to expand it to daily service although there isn’t a set date for that yet, said Bob Wilson, a CDOT spokesperson.

The many CDOT routes offer opportunities to explore Colorado’s mountain towns, Wilson said, along with chances to take care of more practical matters.

“It provides people an opportunity if you’re living in Craig, for instance, if you need to see a doctor, you’re able to do that in Denver,” Wilson said.

During the Denver Broncos football season, riders can catch a “Bustang to Broncos” bus, Wilson said. It provides round-trip transportation from both Colorado Springs and Fort Collins to Empower Field at Mile High stadium in Denver.

Hearing demand from Front Range and rural areas of Colorado drove the creation of the Bustang service, Wilson said.

Randy Wheelock, a Clear Creek County commissioner, welcomed the recent addition of the Bustang Pegasus route.

“Whether addressing local air quality or climate change, or addressing both local and state mobility needs, we must transform how we use our roads,” Wheelock said in the news release. “Pegasus has the potential to be that transformational catalyst, helping us want to change how we travel and building ridership for a more thoughtful transportation future.”

The state also offers the Snowstang service during the ski season, providing round-trip service on weekends and holidays from Denver to four resorts: Loveland Ski Area, Copper Mountain, Arapahoe Basin and Steamboat Resort and Howelsen Hill in Steamboat Springs, according to the Bustang website.

Eye on laser ASPEN PARK – It was after 9 p.m. on May 25 when the alert homeowner heard the unmistakable bark of pistol fire. “I grabbed my binoculars,” he told JCSO dispatch, and zeroed in on a car parked on the shoulder of a nearby residential road. As he watched, a man standing next to the vehicle fired several more rounds from what appeared to be a laser-equipped handgun. The man appeared to be aiming in the general direction of Highway 285, which concerned the homeowner enough to dial 911. As to a suspect description, he could only say that the car might have been an “‘80s or ‘90s Camaro.” Chevy and shootist were both gone by the time deputies arrived, but a scattering of shell casings marked where they’d been, and a “target” set up in an adjacent field seemed to have borne the brunt of the barrage. Deputies holstered the case pending new leads.

Butch and Sundance called 911, and deputies quickly arrived to take charge of both campsites and all firepower.

With no evidence of murderous intent, officers instead charged the Duke with prohibited use of a weapon. Rather than leave the furious foursome in situ, deputies gave Calamity and the Duke escort to a quiet corner of the forest where they could sleep it off, and checked their hardware into the JCSO evidence vault until the couple was sober enough to retrieve it.

Boyfriend said he didn’t want to go down that road. Girlfriend interpreted his reticence as proof of guilt and went off like 10 gallons of Pepsi and 20 rolls of Mentos. Boyfriend bolted for the door. Girlfriend chased him down and managed to scratch deep furrows in his face and neck before he broke free and dialed 911. In her own defense, Girlfriend said she never touched Boyfriend and had no idea how he came by the pattern of bloody, hand-shaped contusions all over his head. Deputies told Girlfriend that she might actually persuade a judge and jury to accept her version, but they certainly weren’t buying it. As deputies handcuffed Girlfriend on domestic assault charges, she vented her displeasure at Boyfriend.

Price war EVERGREEN – After the contractor spent a week doing drywall work in the client’s house, the client

decided he was doing it badly, and on May 24 she told him to hit the bricks. Contractor said he’d be gone as soon as he collected his tools, construction debris and monies due.

Client said his less than satisfactory work was worth less than the agreed price and she’d be giving herself a substantial discount. Contractor “cursed and yelled” and said he was going to “throw all this (construction debris) all over your house!”

Client called 911, telling deputies that Contractor “pushed” her with a bag of construction debris and she wanted him escorted off of the premises and formally trespassed from her property. Officers stood by as Contractor collected everything he could carry, and advised him to arrange for a JCSO chaperone before coming back to collect everything he couldn’t.

Evergreen farmers market finds a new home at Hiwan Colorado Outdoor Markets LLC now resides in the Hiwan Heritage Museum parking lot every Tuesday

The Evergreen farmers market has been taking place for 22 years, but this summer it found a new home next to Hiwan Heritage Museum and the Church of the Cross.

Loredana Ottoborgo has been coordinating the market since its beginning. The market has had previous homes in the parking lots at Walmart, Home Depot, Bergen Village and Evergreen Country Day School.

Some of the vendors have been at the market since its inception, and some change every week. Ottoborgo likes to keep the market rotating each week .

Ottoborgo’s favorite part about organizing the market is seeing the effect it has on the vendors and community members.

“I like to see the entrepreneurial spirit in people — I think I’m addicted to it,” she said.

The farmers market is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Tuesday at the Hiwan Heritage Museum parking lot. The market features plenty of parking and picnic tables in the park to rest after shopping.

What was old is new again Vintage sale at Evergreen’s Center Stage helps theater fund

Vintage is in the eye of the beholder.

Lovers of vintage clothing, jewelry, shoes, fabric and more found something to suit their fancy at a vintage sale and fundraiser for Center Stage in Evergreen June 11-12.

The wares were from the theater’s costume department and from donations, with proceeds going into the fund for repairs and improvements to the historic building.

The sale was successful, according to Amy Bergevin, a costume manager for the theater, raising $2,800 for Center Stage’s building fund.

“And more importantly,” she added, “I believe we made some new friends in the community.”

The night before the weekend sale, volunteers set up the racks of clothing — lacy dresses, skirts and sweaters of all kinds — plus shoes, costume jewelry and clothing patterns in the theater lobby. The “oddments” table had a mishmash of items such as an old clock, posters and hat boxes while the “wounded birds” rack had clothing that while still beautiful needed some TLC in the form of a seamstress to make repairs.

Bergevin and Linda Bolinger, who also manages the costume rooms, explained that the clothing racks had been overflowing and needed to be purged. In addition, Bergevin is a vintage clothing collector, and she wanted to lighten some of her collection.

“When I started wearing vintage clothing, it was from the 1940s and 1950s,” Bergevin said. “Now people consider 1980s clothing to be vintage.”

When the volunteers were asked what their favorite vintage piece in the sale was, Marilyn Herrs, the Evergreen Players’ volunteer coordinator, responded, “Can you pick your favorite child?”

Pat Haley sorted the necklaces, bracelets, pins and earrings, noting that she was surprised at the amount of jewelry available for sale.

Bergevin said she wanted the money to go to the building fund because she loves the theater. Center Stage on Fireweed Drive was built

in 1924 as part of the Episcopal Conference Center, and Evergreen Chorale — now called Ovation West — began using the building in 1972, purchasing it in 1991.

“Hopefully we will find people who will love this (vintage clothing) as well,” Bergevin added.

One-room schoolhouse transports children to the 1920s Medlen School House was host to a class of grade school children learning about what school was like in the 1900s

Grade-school students stepped back a hundred years into the past at Medlen School House on South Turkey Creek Road this week, learning the four R’s: “reading, ‘riting, ‘rithmetic and recitation.”

The one room Medlen School House was built in 1866. The Evergreen Mountain Area Historical Society offers the opportunity for children in grades 1-6 to come experience what learning in the 1920s was like by spending three days in class at Medlen.

Jo Ann Dunn has been teaching students about the olden days at the schoolhouse since 1998. She has seen her own grandchildren come through the program and even has one as a helper this year. Dunn enjoys spending the summer days with the children and hopes to give them an immersive experience.

“My goal with all of this is to give them an appreciation of history,” Dunn said.

The program ran two separate three-day camps this summer, and Dunn said that the experiences always vary.

“Every week is different,” she said.

The class practices subjects like reading, writing with ink, arithmetic, writing on slates and performing plays. They also learn skills like making lemonade and ice cream. When it’s time for recess, the children play traditional games like marbles, jacks, jump rope and more.

of becoming a teacher herself one day.

Grace Ann said that helping out with the class this year has been rewarding. She enjoyed seeing how advanced the kids are and watching them respect the space she has grown up loving.

“It’s nice seeing it in a different perspective,” she said. “I love the experience of going back into the 1920s.”

One of the students in class was Madilyn Donovan, an 11-year-old who attends King-Murphy Elementary School. She has been coming to the one-room schoolhouse for the past five years.

Donovan enjoys math and reading in class at Medlen, and likes the quaint details like the water pump and “old-timey clothes.” She also enjoys the plays they practice and perform, and can definitely recognize the key differences between her time at Medlen and King-Murphy.

technology, and here all we have are books,” she said.

After observing the class from a helper’s perspective, Grace Ann said some of these unique experiences can help bring usually shy kids out of their shells.

“It’s one of those experiences you have to have,” Grace Ann said.

Some of the pairings of pinafores with Croc shoes may have been a bit untraditional, but the students leaned into their time at Medlen and enjoyed learning about the past.

festivities, Ryan said the last stretch between Floyd Hill and Parfet Park went by fast. He hit a bit of rain, but he enjoyed coming down the same roads and paths where he and Kimberly have been training.

“It was a fun week,” he said.

Evergreen’s Bob Campbell was also new to Ride the Rockies this year.

Campbell, who’s a Team Evergreen member, usually does the Bailey Hundo, which is around the same time frame as Ride the Rockies. This time, he decided to switch things up.

Those final miles through west Jeffco “felt like the cows going to the barn — everyone was really excited” to reach the finish line, he said.

Highlands Ranch’s Chris Lucas, who’s done the ride 14 times, commented: “Today was fast and a lot of fun. … It’s a phenomenal ride.”

Navigating the ups and downs Overall, Campbell said, while the route was difficult, he was happy the weather was “generally fantastic.”

He said he biked every mile and camped out every night.

Roundtree, who’s done Ride the Rockies 13 or 14 times, said this year’s weather was the best he’s ever seen.

“There was no sleet and snow, like we’ve had in years past,” he said.

Going up Loveland Pass was absolutely perfect, he described. Colo-

rado State Patrol and race organizers closed eastbound U.S. Highway 6 to vehicle traffic, to help with the cyclists’ safety. The temperature was perfect, there was no wind, and Roundtree saw a bighorn sheep herd along the route.

It was the best day of his entire cycling career, he said.

Still, there were hiccups along the way.

Many of the returning cyclists said it was windy earlier in the week, which made climbing difficult. South Jeffco’s Richard Riecks also recalled a couple of cold nights camping.

Lucas commented how Days 1 and 3 were brutal 100-mile days, and Roundtree said high traffic volumes made Day 4’s trek over Hoosier Pass dangerous. Campbell also stated the amount of truck traffic on U.S. 285 was a drawback.

Unless future routes are safer, Roundtree continued, he wouldn’t be doing Ride the Rockies again.

There were some logistical issues with transportation and road/trail closures. Riecks said there also were a few confusing spots that weren’t properly signed.

Overall, though, Riecks and Campbell commended the volunteers and organizers for their work.

A front-row (bike) seat to Colorado While Durango’s Gary Vance acknowledged this year’s ride had some minor issues, he plans to return next year for his 16th Ride the Rockies.

“I try to do it every year,” he said.

Without a doubt, support staff member Janet Zang said, the best part of the trip is how people from all over the world get to see “beautiful Colorado.”

Zang and her husband, who live between Golden and Lakewood, have been involved with Ride the Rockies for several years. They’ve met all sorts of interesting people — couples who ride together, families who live in different states and meet in Colorado for a week, and people of every age group.

She enjoys returning each year to meet more people and watch them fall in love with Colorado.

First-time participant Suzi Potratz of Fruita described how the six-day trip allowed her to ride those iconic mountain passes for the first time.

While they were difficult, Potratz said her mentality was to focus on where she was and take it one pedal at a time.

“It was challenging,” she continued, “but it’s so beautiful to see our country that intimately.”
